Olympiacos reclaimed the Greek Super League title in style
with a commanding 4-2 victory over PAOK in the penultimate round of the Stoiximan Super League play-offs
The win at the “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium capped off a dominant home campaign for the Piraeus giants
who remained unbeaten at home throughout the season and completed a clean sweep over their main rivals—AEK
Despite conceding within the opening minute after a costly error allowed Andrija Živković to score for PAOK
Olympiacos responded with composure and attacking flair
A well-worked move in the 14th minute saw Gelson Martins assist El Kaabi
who teed up Velde to hammer in the equaliser
The hosts took control of the match by the 30th minute
with a powerful header from El Kaabi off a pinpoint Santiago Hezze cross giving them the lead
remained in the fight and levelled the match once more before halftime through Živković
who completed his brace following a dazzling solo run and assist from Konstantelias
But Olympiacos proved too strong in the second half
Chiquinho restored the lead in the 80th minute after Martins sliced through the defence
a swift counterattack saw Yaremchuk set up Martins for a sharp finish
sealing the 4-2 triumph and sparking celebrations across Karaiskakis as the 48th title returned to Piraeus after a three-year absence
Panathinaikos locked in second place with a gritty 2-1 away win over AEK at the “Agia Sophia” Stadium
Erik Lamela gave the hosts the lead just before halftime
converting a low cross from Aboubakary Koita
The “Trifylli” responded with authority in the second half
equalising through a stunning long-range effort from Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi in the 51st minute
striker Karol Swiderski slotted home a penalty that would prove decisive
With Panathinaikos now mathematically secure in second and guaranteed a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers
the final round against Olympiacos on May 11 is reduced to a symbolic clash between the eternal enemies of Greek football
Aris secured fifth place despite being held to a 1-1 draw away to OFI
The Cretans struck early through Vasilios Lampropoulos
but Aris salvaged a point with a late equaliser from Dario Spikic in the 89th minute
Their position was guaranteed after Asteras Tripolis fell to a heavy 4-1 home defeat against Atromitos
who blitzed the first half with goals from Makana Baku
A solitary second-half goal from Tasos Chatzigiovanis did little to change the outcome
their European fate could hinge on the Greek Cup Final
they could snatch the final European ticket
Tuesday’s upcoming fixtures—Kallithea vs Panetolikos
and Lamia vs Levadiakos—will help determine the final standings in what has been a tightly contested battle for survival
Olympiacos played its final home match of the season
hosting PAOK for MD5 round of the Stoiximan Super League Playoffs
thus maintaining their unbeaten record at their home ground
PAOK took the lead just 44 seconds in through Zivković
but Olympiacos turned the game around with goals from Velde and El Kaabi in 14’ and 30’
The visitors equalized in 32’ again through Zivković
but Chiquinho made it 3–2 in the 81st minute
OLYMPIACOS (Jose Luis Mendilibar): Anagnostopoulos
His usage is reduced but his importance is obvious
Kostas Papanikolaou is in the autumn of his career but he still hungers to bring Olympiacos one more Euroleague title
Emmet Ryan on how leadership can come outside the spotlight
Who is the most important player for Olympiacos
It’s one of those questions that seems like it has an easy answer
which says a lot on an utterly loaded team
The Reds certainly wouldn’t be rated as highly this season without him
Yet it takes more than a star to make a team come together
can sway a locker room and influence how the different pieces come together on the floor
That is what Kostas Papanikolaou is bringing to a side that is seeking to end its long wait for a fourth Euroleague title
This is the wild thing about Kostas Papanikolaou
He had secured the everlasting love and respect of fans in Piraeus before he turned 22
Papanikolaou’s surge was the push Olympiacos needed to get over the line and win the Euroleague title in Istanbul
What followed was that odd season with FC Barcelona
reaching the Euroleague Final Four and lifting the ACB title
It was just weird seeing him in a Barcelona jersey
This was however the beginning of a much needed walkabout for the young man from Trikala
how can you miss someone if they never go away
The stint in the NBA that followed was brief but the challenges he faced there aided Papanikolaou’s maturation mentally
Since returning to Olympiacos after three full seasons away
he has been on a decade long quest to give back to the club he loves
The Kostas Papanikolaou that returned to Piraeus wasn’t quite the same as the one that had left
He still had all the tools in his game plus plenty of energy
timing his emotional displays for when they would make the most impact
this was an Olympiacos side that still had Vassilis Spanoulis as its clear leader and Giorgios Printezis as the frontcourt leader
Papanikolaou didn’t step on the toes of the Euroleague legends
offering a more rounded presence to the core of the Reds
This mindset was also reflected in his displays for the national team
With a Greece side that was criticised throughout the group phase of EuroBasket 2017
they recovered and progressed to the quarter finals
It was his words after the game [https://youtu.be/sIcy1bKbSho?si=9hUw78YwnJHyq7h2]
where he sounded like a man who had been doing this for 15 years that stood out to me
he knew how to channel what they were saying to his benefit
The Olympiacos of the past three seasons has
been the best version of the side since that 2013 season
Considering the Reds had two Euroleague championship game appearances in 2015 and 2017 before this run
has evolved and he’s found a way to make it work
and points per game in Euroleague are at their lowest since the 2010/11 season
Yet his assist numbers are above his career averages while his steals remain in line with that
Kostas Papanikolaou is leading with a lot less of the ball
an utterly loaded Olympiacos roster what really matters
Whatever is required to win is what he delivers and expects every man around him to do so as well
BallinEurope has a book, a real life actual book called I Like it Loud, and you can buy it on Amazon now. It’s here as a book and here in Kindle form
There have been no hints of Kostas Papanikolaou retiring at the end of this season but there’s something more obvious here
He’s playing a style of basketball that means he won’t even have to consider it
The focus of his energy and play is enabling him to extend his usefulness at the highest level
they can safely assume at least one more season from him
He might even consider another once his current contract ends next summer
the chances of lifting the big one that one more time are getting fewer in number
he brings the link from London 2013 to the side chasing the Euroleague title today
The young man that secured his legacy more than a decade ago is now seeking to write the perfect final chapter
One more crown to cap a career that will be remembered for decades
once more he wants to prove that Olympiacos rule basketball on this continent

Cosco-controlled Greek port eyes further strengthening of role in automotive trades
COSCO Shipping Car Carriers, the Chinese shipping giant’s fast-growing vehicle transport arm, has inaugurated a new service to Piraeus that is seen as bolstering the Greek port’s credentials as a regional hub
COSCO Shengshi (IMO: 9454711)
that has an overall capacity of 5,276 vehicles
disembarked 199 Geely cars and 17 electric buses at the Piraeus car terminal
The Greek hub has been added to Cosco’s 30-day transit from China to Mediterranean ports
but is expected to increase frequency to a bi-weekly service within this year
The operator has a number of pure vehicle carrier newbuildings on order to support its growth
Recently, Cosco signed an agreement with Greece-based car carrier owner and operator Neptune Lines to manage finished vehicle shipments from China to Europe via Piraeus
The Greek carrier’s logistics affiliate is expected to provide additional services for Cosco including bonded storage hubs for vehicles and pre-delivery inspection services.
Inclusion of the port in the regular rotation underscored its “strategic importance in the global automotive supply chain”, according to the Piraeus Port Authority.
The move “further strengthens PPA’s transhipment potential, confirms the port’s attractiveness, and is expected to generate significant multiplier benefits for the Greek economy”, said the authority’s chief executive Su Xudong.
Cosco has operated the largest portion of Piraeus’ container terminal for the past decade and is now the PPA’s main shareholder with 67% of the management company.
Su said that the PPA is committed to “further reinforcing” the port’s car terminal, through investments in infrastructure, automation and green technologies.
The PPA posted strong financial results for the first quarter of 2025, although the car terminal was not among the sectors that showed the strongest growth.
First-quarter revenues increased by 14.7% to €51.6m, while gross profits grew by 17.7% to €27.9m.
After-tax earnings came to €17.1m, a 23% increase on last year’s net profit for the period.
The container terminal increased throughput by 53% to 195,937 teus for the first three months of the year.
By contrast, the car terminal recorded a “marginal” increase of 1.5%, although this was primarily due to a lacklustre domestic market.
The number of transhipment vehicles discharged at the port increased by 12.9% to 31,836 vehicles.
Revenues from the sector decreased by €1.9m, a reflection of supply chain problems, although most of the issues have now been solved, said the PPA.

Vehicle throughput at the Greek port of Piraeus was down in 2024 but the port authority has recorded an increase in revenue and will benefit from a new joint venture between Cosco Shipping and Neptune Lines
Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) has reported that a 33% drop in transhipments has contributed to a decrease in the volume of finished vehicles processed through its car terminal last year
Figures for CY2024 also show a 10% drop in domestic volume.
Piraeus Port Authority has expanded the Herakleous Pier at its car terminal
The port handled 247,600 vehicle units in 2024
A spokesperson for PPA said the decline in volumes was because of “changes in the commercial landscape”
PPA has posted a 28% increase in revenue at its car terminal
“primarily driven by higher storage revenues and a pickup in domestic activity”
The port authority said that growth offset the decline in vehicle volumes
“underscoring the sector’s ability to generate higher value through operational efficiency”
Last month PPA’s majority owner, China Cosco Shipping, set up a new transhipment hub at Piraeus with Greek short-sea finished vehicle logistics provider Neptune Lines
Cosco Shipping will move vehicles from China to Piraeus from where Neptune Lines will provide a feeder service to other ports in the Mediterranean
PPA said the new venture would streamline Chinese vehicle imports to Europe and make Piraeus port “a central gateway for vehicle distribution in the region”
PPA has prepared for additional vehicle volumes
In its annual financial report for 2024 the authority states it has recently completed the 40,000-sq.m expansion of Herakleous Pier in the ro-ro terminal bringing the overall area to 110,000 sq.m
In the report PPA says it recognised the need for technology-driven modernisation
particularly in areas such as terminal automation
cargo handling optimisation and real-time data analytics

Over the weekend containers at Greece’s Port of Piraeus topped over on the pier. While there were no injuries the Union of Cargo Handling Workers (ENEDEIP) highlighted the incident as part of its ongoing disputes with COSCO which controls the port.
The union released videos and pictures showing the containers. Some were lying on the dock and others were up against the base of the crane. Several of the boxes are crushed or split open. ENEDEP reports the incident happened on Saturday, October 5.
The port of Piraeus has been under pressure in 2024 due to the diversion of containerships away from routes through the Suez Canal. Container movements were down 13.5 percent in the first five months of 2024. The post is averaging about 320,000 TEU per month in 2024 with the volume down more than 24 percent in May versus the year earlier.
COSCO purchased its initial position in the port from the Greek government in 2016 for €365 million plus a commitment for a further €760 million in the port. It received a 51 percent interest in the Port of Piraeus and in 2021 increased the position under a revised agreement with the Greek government. It purchased a further 16 percent for a further €88 million.
The port has grown in importance as a transshipment hub in the Mediterranean. COSCO last week reported a better than four percent increase in container revenues in the first half of 2024 at the Piraeus Container Terminal despite declining volumes. Overall, the port had record revenues of nearly $120 million in the first half of the year. Income was up better than seven percent to nearly $60 million.
ENEDEP has been in a long-running dispute with COSCO including trying to block the investments. After Saturday’s incident, they accused port management of “insufficient safety measures.” In a statement, the union said the port was too focused on profits and making its record profits and not on the safety of employees.
The union has called a general assembly meeting on Wednesday, October 16.

Authorities have seized a large quantity of cocaine hidden in a banana shipment at the port of Piraeus
which had been shipped from Ecuador to Piraeus port
was uncovered during a joint inspection by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) and the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE)
officials discovered 45 packages containing a total of 54 kilograms of cocaine
with an estimated market value of €2.35 million
The cocaine packages were concealed in the container’s external cooling mechanism and detected using an automated X-ray system

If the first quarter of this century has taught us anything
it is that resilience and adaptability are key ingredients of success
Euromoney sat down with Thanos F Vlachopoulos
general manager and head of large corporate finance and wholesale products at Piraeus Group
to discuss how the bank chartered a new path focused on innovation and sustainability
The distinction highlights the bank's strategic overhaul and return to profitability
customer-centric services and sustainable practices
the bank successfully reduced its non-performing exposure (NPE) ratio to less than 3.5% in 2023 from 52% in 2017
and is expecting more than €1 billion in net profits in 2025 and 2026
Recognising the pivotal role of technology in modern banking
Piraeus was the first bank in the Greek market to launch a state-of-the-art digital transaction banking platform
The platform includes cash management and invoice management services
Vlachopoulos recognises the fast-paced nature of transaction banking
but you need to continue investing if you want to be in the same position in two or five years,” he explains
Piraeus is the first Greek bank to offer a trade payables supply chain and virtual accounts solutions in the market
Buyers and importers of products and services can leverage a digital solution for the prepayment (discounting) of domestic and foreign suppliers’ invoices
the invoice management service offers a fully automated process of invoice payment and reconciliation
Virtual accounts are used by clients as a collection tool or to further automate receivables reconciliation
All TBX services are offered to corporates on a tailor-made basis
after analysing the needs and transaction behaviour of the client
The investments in digital transaction banking focus on two key areas
we work with our teams to understand how to relieve the CFO
the treasurer and the accounting department of a company from the administrative tasks they perform
using our platforms and products,” Vlachopoulos notes
it’s about the data we have and understanding how to use it for the benefit of our customers.”
These efforts enhance efficiency and allow businesses to focus on strategic growth
The proactive use of data analytics enables the bank to anticipate client needs and offer tailored solutions
“Our small and medium-sized clients do not have the time and resources to rethink their operations and constantly look for efficiencies,” Vlachopoulos highlights
“Data allows us to understand the profile of each client
build a tailored solution and be proactive – you go with a proposition to the client; you don’t wait for the client to come to you.”
Piraeus operates in a domestic environment with increasing competition
not only from fintechs but also from traditional local banks
offering a wider range of products and services at competitive prices
“Our key strategy is to leverage technology to enhance our efficiency and customer experience,” Vlachopoulos says
ensuring its offerings align with evolving market demands
