Today, we’re here to talk about Ryan McMahon, but before we can do that, we need to talk about Joe Kutina power-hitting first baseman in his second season with the St batting .374 with a .589 slugging percentage for the Saginaw Krazy Kats of the Class-C Southern Michigan League putting up a 96 wRC+ with three home runs in 26 games with the Browns his wRC+ dropped to 59 and he launched just one homer in 69 games just 216 players have replicated Kutina’s dubious accomplishment Although that averages out to a bit below two per season We’re only third of the way into this decade we’ll end with the lowest total since the days when Joe Kutina was lumbering around the bases with reckless abandon one of the changes wrought by the data revolution was an unwillingness to let players who were incapable of stealing a base keep trying and failing over and over again So far this decade, Nicky Lopez is the only player who has accomplished the feat somehow getting caught five times without a stolen base in 2020 He’d go on to steal 22 bases in 23 attempts in 2021 so I might have to devote another article to looking into how he managed to fail so prolifically our topic is the one player who has already entered Kutina territory this season Here’s the current list of steal-less players who have been caught at least twice putting them on pace to join the illustrious Kutina Club of Insistently Unsuccessful Basestealers I’ve also included their sprint speed and its percentile rank he had accrued -3.1 career baserunning runs which comes out to a definitely-not-good-but-not-necessarily-disastrous 66.7% and he’s stolen at least five bases in each of the past three seasons McMahon still has 102 games in which to steal a base and avoid joining Kutina on the graph above but let’s look at what’s been going wrong so far this season His first caught stealing came on April 9 against the Diamondbacks This still frame tells you everything you need to know Tovar is already digging for third with his head down McMahon hasn’t even taken his crossover step yet His first step toward second won’t come until Tovar’s fifth step toward third but it’s possible that he didn’t get up to top speed because he wasn’t expecting Moreno to go for the trail runner McMahon got caught for a second time on April 28 and it really is hard to fault him for this one McMahon clearly beat Victor Caratini’s high throw and it took a replay review to demonstrate that his foot had levitated off second base by a centimeter or two Joe Kutina never had to deal with this garbage Valdez ran a 50% strikeout rate once he got to two strikes His .229 OBP in those situations was also far better than the rest of the league Díaz would get a fresh chance the next inning McMahon’s third caught stealing came just four days later and this is when things started to go off the rails he’s a you-miss-100%-of-the-shots-you-don’t-take kind of guy but slightly less so when you’re missing 100% of the shots you do take McMahon waited until there were two outs and two strikes on the batter he neglected to wait until the pitcher threw the pitch That’s not to say that he took off willy-nilly. Edward Cabrera tends to nod his head right before he throws a pitch and McMahon must have thought he had him timed up Cabrera had thrown over without nodding his head so McMahon likely figured that he was unlikely to burn his second disengagement on another pickoff attempt He took off when the brim of Cabrera’s cap dipped Cabrera didn’t follow that move immediately with a pitch In the absence of crowd noise for which Miami is famous the television microphones picked up half a dozen people shouting the weight of his transgressions finally seemed to hit McMahon He removed his helmet and cupped it in his outstretched hand like the skull of Yorick His flashes of merriment that were wont to set the table on a roar McMahon hasn’t attempted to steal another base this season But he did get picked off just three days later Coming with one out in the top of the eighth and the tying run at the plate this was the most costly of the four plays It reduced Colorado’s chances of winning by 11% “Oh no,” groaned the announcers on both the Pirates and Rockies broadcasts A replay showed that McMahon was simply fooled by what seemed like a very average pickoff move Content that the ball was going to home plate he shifted his attention there and started his secondary lead then nearly fell to the ground when he realized his mistake the broadcast had time to follow McMahon for the long then lowered his head again and looked for a dark place where he could be alone with his dark thoughts and McMahon could turn this thing around at any point by somehow stealing just one base and Kutina Watch transfers its withering gaze to Nick Senzel and Jeimer Candelario McMahon is having a career year at the plate Thanks to huge jumps in both contact rate and contact quality but it’s also the first time he’s been above 95 and he’s in the 95th percentile or better in terms of average exit velocity Joe Kutina was sent back down the minors after his 0-for-7 season and he was out of baseball entirely after just 53 more games is on pace for his first 4-win season while setting career bests in just about every statistical category He’s been the subject of much trade speculation but the Rockies have made it clear that they have no interest in moving him He should probably just stay put from now on From the Agnar Pytte Science Center to the iconic Peter B Lewis Building and dozens of projects in between the longtime planning leader played a pivotal role in shaping the physical face of the university—even if he regularly eschewed credit for his efforts “I’d like to be remembered for being a quiet diligent but creative planner and truly professional manager of high moral character and integrity,” Kutina said when he retired in 2002 as vice president for institutional planning “I’d like to be remembered as someone who did a lot of the university Case Western Reserve will have a memorial service for Kutina at 4 p.m with a reception immediate following in the lower level of Crawford Hall “Ken Kutina’s influence on Case Western Reserve can be seen in countless ways “Beyond the building projects and his beloved farm Ken’s most lasting impact is in the example he set and people he inspired during his decades helping to shape this campus.” Kutina first came to the university as an undergraduate in the mid-1950s then returned as a teacher of statistics and mechanical engineering after earning a master’s degree at Cornell University He left again for work in private industry but then came back to campus for graduate study earning a master of business administration degree in 1967 and a doctor of philosophy degree in 1974 serving as an administrator whose responsibilities included overseeing campus planning of major capital improvements As the years progressed he earned increasingly senior positions at the School of Medicine and the university Kutina managed nearly $300 million in campus construction projects helped secure more than $57 million in institutional support for research and physical improvements and published 26 papers on simulation modeling and analytical tools for higher education He also forged a lasting bond with the university’s 400-acre Hunting Valley farm Kutina helped launch and became a charter member of the farm’s management committee After making several personal donations to the farm along with colleagues he collaborated with them to establish a formal endowment fund to ensure the farm continued to provide robust research education and recreation opportunities for generations to come “Having Ken at the farm as emeritus professor was a gift and a privilege for all us,” said University Farm Director Ana Locci “He helped us secure numerous grants for renewable energy projects was directly involved in obtaining several endowment gifts and guided us during projects to update and remodel historical buildings and the most honest and humble person I know.” Kutina maintained his involvement with the university working part-time for the School of Medicine as a senior consultant for three years Eventually the university’s board of trustees named Kutina Vice President Emeritus of Institutional Planning Not surprisingly Kutina chose the farm for his emeritus office which also is where the Kutina Classroom in the main barn is reserved for university departments and educational groups Another spot that bears his name can be found in Adelbert Gym dubbed “Kutina’s Landing,” stands as a nondescript tribute to his passion for the university and willingness to step up when needed the Case Western Reserve men’s and women’s basketball teams wanted to celebrate their programs’ histories by playing games there as part of the first “Throwback Weekend.” But the building code wouldn’t allow it—because the second-floor railing was dangerously low a new railing was installed and the historic weekend was an overwhelming success As an offshoot to his commitment to higher education Kutina also served on the Ohio Higher Educational Facility Commission since 1997 John Kasich in 2012 to serve a new eight-year term He served as as a member and secretary of the commission Those who would like to make contributions in Kutina’s memory can do so online and indicate that their gift is for the Case Western Reserve University Farm: Squire Valleevue and Valley Ridge Farms Annual Fund want to help make it better I now feel like I’m a part of the downtown community and have now attended many events,” Kutina said “I now encourage my siblings to come downtown with their kids to show them how much there is to offer over here.” Though the family-friendly events draw her downtown for special events Kutina said she also would love to see more dining and nightlife “I often go to lunch plant and an ethanol refinery will be reduced The European Commission has made available an amount of 723.8 billion eurosto combat the consequences of the corona crisis and make Europe greener All member states have the opportunity to submit plans for disbursement from this Recovery and Resilience Facility All the member states of the European Union The Netherlands has not submitted plans as yet it became public knowledge at the end of January that hard work is going on behind the scenes in the Netherlands to secure some of those European billions At least 37 percent of the funding should be used for making their countries more sustainable and 20 percent for digitalization sustainable and inclusive growth– Social and territorial cohesion– Public health and institutional resilience– Policy for future generations Apart from that, the EC has identified several so-called flagship areas:– Power up – Renovate – Recharge and Refuel – Connect – Modernise – Scale-up – Reskill and upskill we will be focusing on the implementation of these plans We will be outlining what each country is doing to reduce CO₂ emissions and we will be reporting on innovative projects Infographics will allow you to compare the member states’ efforts with each other These include two pilot projects aimed at capturing CO2 and then storing it in gas and oil fields but there are definitely some snags,” says Stasa Puskaric a professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology Croatia has been through tough times in recent years. The country was hit not only by the pandemic, but also by earthquakes The vast majority of the funds that Croatia is receiving from Europe are therefore being invested in the reconstruction and sustainability of the buildings that were affected That effort to make them more sustainable will indirectly help reduce the country’s emissions But the country is also putting money into the direct capture of CO2 Two pilot projects should ensure that CO2 emissions will be reduced at an ammonia production plant and an ethanol refinery One pilot is being conducted at the Petrokemija Kutina ammonia production plant This entails capturing CO2 and transporting it via an existing gas pipeline to depleted oil and gas fields in Ivanić Grad The project aims to capture 190,000 tonnes of CO2 per year A second investment will go to a CCS plant that will form part of an ethanol refinery project This project seeks to capture 55,000 tonnes of CO2 per year that will be transported to depleted gas fields about 40 kilometers away from the site It states in the plan that the most important goal is to make sure that carbon dioxide does not leak into the air at the two sites Technology for the storage also needs to be improved the projects are to serve as an example to companies that are focused on the production of fossil fuels The CO2 is transported via existing gas pipelines from INA The pipelines will still have to be renovated before being put into use especially through the exploitation of natural systems in the ocean every little bit helps and I’m glad we’re becoming more aware of our impact on the climate But if you look at the amount of CO2 that is captured we should not expect that these projects will make a major contribution to counteracting the climate crisis I do hope that the projects will show the fossil fuel industry that it is possible to work in a much cleaner way.” the professor says there is another major drawback to the companies: the amount of energy they need “Carbon capture requires a lot of energy You have to concentrate the gas and pressurize it It also takes an awful lot of energy to then pump it into the reservoirs I wonder if these projects are really going to contribute something substantive to the overall impact on the climate.” In particular, we need to make more use of global, natural systems that are energy efficient if we are going to make a real impact in terms of carbon dioxide capture. “That’s what I’m focusing on in my studies of CO2 and marine snow,” the professor explains. “Marine snow is a kind of shower of organic matter that falls from the upper waters down to the deep ocean. By stimulating the formation of marine snow we could help the ocean remove atmospheric CO2 It could provide a natural disposal method to combat global warming and climate change This has a much greater impact on the climate compared to the smaller projects that capture CO2 artificially.” But regardless of how intensively we pursue CO2 capture over the coming years the professor points out: “Prevention is still better than cure It is still far more important that we acknowledge our dependence on fossil fuels and do something about their emissions.” The pilot projects are only a small part of Croatia’s overall plan to go green the capture of CO2: these are extremely important issues that all need to be taken care of,” the professor said in a response to the national Recovery and Resilience Plan “It’s a great step that Europe is making these funds available to help EU countries become more sustainable and I see incredibly wonderful projects being started around the world This is one step that the world desperately needs.” Innovation Origins is an independent news platform that has an unconventional revenue model. West and the other men — Kevin Kutina of Romana Roberto Gonzalez of Palmetto Bay and William Gonzalez of Orlando — face a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on each of the conspiracy and wire fraud counts and a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment on the major fraud against the United States count The indictment "also puts the defendants on notice" that the federal government intends to recoup at least $4.8 million, "which represents the proceeds of the criminal conduct," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement West Palm Beach chose West Construction for the Currie Park rebuild long after those indictments were issued and some city officials — including Mayor Keith James — said it would not be appropriate to shun a firm with an established track record of work with the city because some individuals tied to the firm face criminal charges "I think it's important to note this has been a company that's been doing business in our city for 20 years," James said I don't believe there have been any complaints The company itself is not under indictment." West Construction has been involved in numerous lawsuits regarding its work over the past decade Lawsuits in large-scale construction work are not uncommon Matthew West is the son of the firm's founder and has served as chief executive officer and vice president since 2000 according to information on the firm's web site Attorney's Office has alleged that West was part of an elaborate scheme to win a $5 million to $10 million contract to build a cancer infusion therapy center for veterans in Pinellas County WEST PALM NEWS: City feels growing pains amid wealth influx as neighborhoods navigate change "The indictment alleges that the conspirators utilized a company owned and operated by service-disabled veteran Roberto Gonzalez and William Gonzalez to submit a bid containing false statements and omissions to be awarded the contract," the U.S "The conspirators falsely represented qualified employees from Kevcon would serve in supervisory roles per a teaming agreement between Maxon and Kevcon the conspirators failed to disclose to the VA contracting officials that Maxon was a pass-through for Matthew West’s company which managed nearly all the work for the CITC contract and received most of the payment for the same." was not eligible for a contract the federal government had set aside for small businesses owned by service-disabled veterans WEST PALM NEWS: Project offering affordable housing and boutique grocery breaks ground "As a result of the false statements and omissions within the bid proposal the VA awarded the contract to Maxon," the office said "the conspirators submitted multiple invoices for payment Treasury paid Maxon approximately $4.8 million the conspirators transferred approximately $4.2 million of those funds to West West transferred approximately $1.1 million to Kevcon." The Palm Beach Post reached out to West Construction for comment about the indictment and what it might mean for taxpayers' $35.5 million investment in Currie Park WEST PALM NEWS: Developer of Four Seasons resorts buys land near Trump's Mar-a-Lago "I can't really talk about that," said a woman who gave her name as Gabrielle but would not provide her last name or the position she holds with West Construction Gabrielle said she would pass along The Post's request for comment to someone else with the firm until a contract between the city and West Construction is signed the firm remains under a "cone of silence" that would bar its representatives from discussing its bid to rebuild Currie Park because the federal government is providing some of the money West Palm Beach plans to use to rebuild the park the city is required to follow a federal law obligating the city to accept the lowest responsive bidder for contract work that was put out to bid "The procurement guidelines that we follow requires us on the federal side that we go with the lowest responsive bidder unless we have defensible reasons to do otherwise," she said City Attorney Kimberly Rothenburg added that the city's procurement rules would require a bidder to disclose a prior conviction City officials asked for and received from West Construction a "continuity plan" spelling out how the firm would carry on if Matthew West "has to take a leave of absence "West Construction is blessed to have several individuals that provide their years of experience in the industry both as West employees and prior experience," the plan states "The following information contained herein will provide an outline to the role these individuals will play and how they will effectively provide management and guidance to West without Matthew West’s full time involvement." business development and internal controls in Matthew West's absence "While Matthew West is a part of the company capable of thriving without Matthew’s full time involvement," the firm stated Commissioner Joseph Peduzzi said the continuity plan along with assurances from city staff helped him move past concerns he had about having the city do business with West Construction "City staff has assured me that they've worked with this entity before we've never had any issues with it and I should feel comfortable with moving forward supporting them as the low bidder," Peduzzi said I'm going to accept the recommendations of city staff." Peduzzi said he went to high school with one of the people West Construction said it would elevate if Matthew West had to step aside The commissioner said he respects that company official and views him as a man of integrity City staff does believe West Construction could complete the Currie Park project if Matthew West had to step down as chief executive officer "Based on the best information that we have the company would survive the removal of that one individual and that this project would be completed," she said But the company is of a magnitude that we have a fair level of confidence that they would still continue to operate and complete this project." whose commission district includes Currie Park said she backs moving forward with West Construction you're under indictment or you're involved in a case.' You actually have to be criminally prosecuted." West Construction lists several projects on its web site a community center in Surfside and a $1.9 million Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County maintenance facility in West Palm Beach Agenda materials prepared for Monday's City Commission meeting noted that West Construction was "the lowest and most responsive" bidder among three that sought to win the Currie Park contract The city initially expected to spend $27.7 million on extensive Currie Park renovations that include enhanced green space West Construction's bid was $7.8 million more than the city's budget for the Currie Park rebuild but city staff and a consultant hired to help review bids determined that an additional $2.2 million should be added to the budget "due to the potential of unforeseen conditions and the nature of construction projects in the region exceeding budget from inflationary price pressures." The city and its Community Redevelopment Agency will provide the additional $10 million needed so West Construction can rebuild the park according to its bid Commissioner Christy Fox cast the lone vote against having West Construction handle the Currie Park refurbishment She was blunt in saying the city should steer clear of West Construction "I fully support this park moving forward," Fox said "I'm excited for the whole city to have something so beautiful a park that offers something for every family But I think when our city attorney mentions that we need convincing reasons to vote against something I would say a federal indictment is convincing enough for me Fox added: "I cannot support putting $35 million of our taxpayers' dollars towards a company that I don't even know is going to herb "Most people have no clue," says Katrinka Morgan executive director of the Herb Society of America the Historic Rose Garden in the Western Reserve Herb Society Garden at the Cleveland Botanical Garden was certified as a collection The honor was bestowed by the Herb Society of America of which the Western Reserve group is a chapter but it's also an honor because it's the only certified historic rose collection in a botanical garden in the country The certification makes the rose garden a living library "The award means that we are to use these roses for education and research and propagate them for prosperity," Kutina says "They will be recognized around the world as a pristine collection This registration allows others who are interested to come and study the garden and take a side rooting for prosperity There is a great deal of interest around the world in finding certain species." "Historic roses are a complicated subject and it took four years to compile the data needed to receive this certification." The Historic Rose Garden overflows with 50 shrubs of roses with heritages that pre-date 1867 "That was the year when the first hybrid was developed," says Kutina "Any rose that dates back prior to that time is considered a historic rose." The collection includes the Rosa 'Celsiana,' or Damask rose a rose of unknown Dutch origin dating before 1750 The Dutch painter van Huysum was often inspired by this rose for his floral paintings The Rosa 'Baltimore Belle,' another fragrant rose that's native to the United States "This shrub produces a fountain of blossoms," Kutina says So the next time you visit the Cleveland Botanical Garden a little bit of history right under your nose Use of and/or registration on any portion of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement, (updated 8/1/2024) and acknowledgement of our Privacy Policy, and Your Privacy Choices and Rights (updated 1/1/2025) © 2025 Advance Local Media LLC.
