Croatia get the bragging rights of being the better red-and-white team
OPATIJA (Croatia) - If there were any doubts about Croatia's scoring, those should be put to bed. The big three of Mario Hezonja, Ivica Zubac and Dario Saric found their way to double figures as Croatia rolled to an 82-68 win over Poland as both teams continued warming up for their respective FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
Both of them will also face Brazil in Opatija, before flying to Greece and Spain for their qualifiers next week.
Poland had an eight-point lead in the first half, the game resembling their bout with Greece from a couple of days ago. However, they had the same troubles after the break, not being able to match their hosts' pace in the second half.
Croatian head coach Josip Sesar kept feeding his biggest stars offensively, Mario Hezonja and Ivica Zubac were in double digits after two quarters of action, and Dario Saric joined them in the third. The big three finished with 44 points, shooting 16-of-29 from the field, while also grabbing 17 rebounds and dishing out 9 assists.
If coach Sesar needs a blueprint for the upcoming OQT in Piraeus, he can just play the third quarter on repeat, because his men scored 30 points in that stanza, taking the lead and cruising towards a win in front of 600 fans.
The LA Clippers knew what they were doing when they made Ivica Zubac their starting center, and the big guy's confidence carried over to the national team. He finished with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field, with 10 rebounds also to his name, giving him an efficiency rating of 29, a game high by some distance.
With Hezonja as a driver, with Zubac and Saric making a living inside the arc, it comes as no surprise that Croatia won the points in the paint battle 34-22. The worrying part for Croatia? They only had 3 offensive rebounds in the game, and finished the first half without a single second chance offense.
The worrying part for Poland? Even in a preparation game, they were careless on the defensive end, with Olek Balcerowski and Aleksander Dziewa fouling out, and three other players finishing with four fouls.
Croatia know they will get their points from the big three, and it's a good sign for them to see all of them in fine offensive form. The question remains, how much can the others help them out? Borna Kapusta had a fine second half as the point guard, dishing out 6 assists with his 9 points, while Jaleen Smith was +16 in 25 minutes of work, scoring 6 points with 5 rebounds, playing as the shooting guard in their starting lineup.
Poland replicated their game from Greece. The offense is smooth when AJ Slaughter and Olek Balcerowski are dialed in, Mateusz Ponitka did a bit of everything with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, but struggled shooting the ball from the field. When they are aggressive on the ball, good things happen, as evident by 18 points from turnovers in this one.
MIES (Switzerland) - 24 participating nations are expected to be locked in intense competition at the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024 in Greece,Latvia,Puerto Rico
they will be looking to fine-tune their play in a series of preparation games heading toward the event

Nowhere else in Europe can you travel 20 kilometres or drive for 15 to 20 minutes and go from the Mediterranean to a mountainous region influenced by alpine air
There is no similar place in Europe – not on the Côte d’Azur
nowhere else,” the President of the Republic Zoran Milanović said today at a ceremony held in the coastal town of Opatija on the occasion of Municipal Day
President Milanović does not see Opatija as an average town
“It is endowed in a special way; it is relatively wealthy
and its budget can be compared to the budgets of towns in Italy
This area is in some ways a (frontrunner),” the President said about the town
President Milanović emphasized that we have to fight for every euro because Croatia has given a lot in return
but every euro available to us from Brussels should be taken
We have given up our right to decide on some matters that we would otherwise handle on our own,” emphasized the President of the Republic
he emphasized that one should be a loyal partner
“Europe will never be a community of equal nations
We are not equal in terms of culture – and I don’t think that some cultures are superior or inferior – nor in terms of customs
are Chakavian – the root of Croatianhood and Croatian identity and tradition,” emphasized President Milanović
the special session featured speeches by Dušan Kotur
President of the Opatija Town Council; Fernando Kirigin
Prefect of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; Josip Ostrogović
delegate of the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament and Member of Parliament Ivica Lukanović

Balinjera is known as the crown jewel of Opatija’s carnival season
Once upon a time, Opatija was known as one of the leading racing hubs in Europe. Between 1939 and 1977, the road connecting Preluk with Opatija hosted the annual Adriatic Grand Prix
While the Grand Prix died down at the end of the 70s
as the track was considered too dangerous for the manifestation to continue
Opatija didn’t let its racing fame sink into oblivion
they revived the glitz and glamour of the Grand Prix glory with an entirely different racing event
Opatija hosted the first edition of Balinjerada
an amusing soapbox race that has since grown into one of the most beloved traditions on Kvarner
While soapbox racing isn’t exactly a rare occurrence around the world
Opatija’s take has two peculiar technical requirements that make Balinjerada quite unique
the vehicles built by the participants have to run on ball bearings exclusively
as a nod to an era when industry used to thrive in the wider Rijeka area
Discarded ball-bearings that were too worn-down to be used in industrial facilities were acquired for free and used to build simple toy cars for kids; the so-called karet was a perfect little vehicle to zoom down the vacant roads in all parts of town
As ball-bearings are called balinjere in the local dialect
it didn’t take much brainstorming for the quirky race to get a memorable name
it’s more of a season-appropriate feature
The decision to hold Balinjerada during the carnival season was basically a perfect excuse for the participants to step up their racing game with some flamboyant gear – both the racers and their vehicles are clad in colourful costumes which are often designed as cheeky social commentary related to current events in the country
the 35th edition of Balinjerada took place in the main street in Opatija
The parade was set into motion by three prominent racers: Meštar Toni
the carnival maestro who kicks off the festivities in Rijeka by claiming the symbolic key to the city
shared a seat with this year’s carnival queen Iva Ciceran and Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel
While soapbox cars are known to reach impressive speeds considering they have no engine
the simplest karets don’t present any real danger
being more likely to slow down and stop than to run off the road
The gentle slope of Opatija’s track thus makes it safe for even the youngest racers to join the extravaganza:
Curious to see how this looks like in motion

The digital version of the famous attraction marks its 111th anniversary
To celebrate the 111th anniversary of its famous coastal promenade
the Croatian City of Opatija has unveiled an interactive map where anyone from anywhere in the world can take a “virtual walk”
one can transport themselves to the tourist destination and learn about its historical and cultural attractions.
To see photographs or videos of specific landmarks
one must select one of the “points of interest” on the map
Doing so will then transport the user to another page
featuring visual content as well as information that explains the history of the landmark and why it is significant.
According to a press release by the Croatian city
the coastal promenade is an “unavoidable part of every tourist’s visit”
it has always been an inspiration to artists and is featured in the majority of Opatija’s postcards
“The favourite promenade of Opatija and its guests has now been moved to the virtual world and thus become available for “walking” along with the help of computers
a virtual walk cannot fully convey that feeling of walking along the coastal path above a grotto shaped by waves
beneath green canopies carried by light breezes and between architecturally impressive villas surrounded by lush gardens
but it can convey the core of Lungomar as Opatija’s past and present.”
It is important to note that other cities have also launched similar maps since the outbreak of the pandemic. Taking a case in point, TheMayor.EU previously reported that the Croatian City of Split unveiled a virtual tour to promote itself as an attractive destination last year.

I moved to Milan in April 2017 and traveled all over Europe.
How did you choose Croatia and specifically Opatija
I did my bus tour of Croatia starting from Dubrovnik finishing up north in Pula
I fell in love with it and decided to spend the month of January 2020 in Opatija to see if I would still like it during the coldest month
Having a dog that’s too big to fly in the cabin
Opatija is convenient since I can take a train from Milan to Trieste and have a driver pick me up there

The Covid situation is far worse in Milan and I was having such a great time with my new friends I ended up staying
I bought an apartment from an Albanian man who I communicate with in Italian
Being one of two Asians and one of two Americans in Opatija
I was discovered by FoodyTV a streaming service in the US on Instagram and I started filming my travel series “According To Megumi.”
I can shoot “According To Megumi,” invest in real estate
and promote MEGUMI-O from anywhere in the world
the cost of living in Croatia is cheap. Another reason beyond Covid that keeps me from rushing back to Milan
is the US Dollar is low now and the Kuna is much cheaper than Euro
Opatija and Europe outside of Spain and France are not exactly entertainment industry countries so I can’t just call a friend to shoot and edit me
A camera person or editor who doesn’t speak English as a first language doesn’t understand my humor and timing
I could dropbox my videos to my friends in the future to make the edits tighter.
What’s important for a destination to offer to be compatible with a digital nomad lifestyle
A community of English speaking people and Amazon
it would be best to be in a city where you can find decent ethnic cuisine
I Google sunnier winter locations constantly to see if they have an Asian population
I will fly to Budapest to eat Escargot at the French Institute and Pho
Brussels also has great Vietnamese food and a Michelin star sushi place.

He’s now based in London with a Japanese corporation and he’s trying to get them to agree to let him leave London since he’s just been working from home for the last year
If you can make money in a high currency and live in a country with a low currency
you can live very well without grinding so much
Do you have any advice for people looking to make the transition to digital nomad life?
Be flexible and learn at least a second language
I communicate with a lot of people in Italian in Opatija
The owner of a fast-food restaurant I frequent is a Spanish man married to a Croatian woman and he speaks Spanish
you can find yourself in situations where the workers of a certain restaurant or store are no longer the young ones off from school who spoke English
search Google in the country where you’re considering the move
to see if you can buy things you MUST have
Amazon and eBay don’t offer the same things throughout the world.
You can follow Megumi Hosogai’s adventures on her official website.
