Bayer’s grant for insurance premium support of 10 million euros will unlock a potential insurance coverage of 127 million U.S
dollars for 10 million smallholder farmers
2025 – Bayer Foundation and the Pula Foundation today announced at World Economic Forum that they are planning to provide insurance coverage for 10 million smallholder farmers by 2030
The collaboration aims to enhance climate resilience among smallholder farmers
protecting them against the growing impacts of droughts and floods
It will help build private-public collaborations and shape the insurance market for agriculture in Africa and Asia
The Pula Foundation has developed scalable and data-driven agricultural insurance solutions designed to safeguard smallholder farmers' investments in their farms
By mitigating risks associated with extreme weather events such as droughts and floods
the Pula Foundation ensures that farmers receive financial compensation for yield losses
and build long-term resilience in the face of climate uncertainty
Bayer Foundation’s grant for insurance premium support in the amount of 10 million euros – supported by a donation from Bayer’s Crop Science Division – will unlock a potential insurance coverage of 127 million U.S
dollars for 10 million farmers working with national governments in Bangladesh
The grant originates from Bayer Foundation’s Social Innovation Ecosystem Fund which targets mature and high-impact solutions for underserved communities
“Smallholder farmers are already affected heavily by the impacts of climate change
It is crucial that we enable them to feed their communities and contribute to global food security,” said Matthias Berninger
Sustainability and Safety at Bayer and Member of the Board of Trustees at Bayer Foundation
“Our Crop Science division is committed to deliver innovative
farmer-focused solutions that drive sustainable growth and regenerative agriculture
By unlocking climate finance and collaborating with partners like the Pula Foundation
we aim to deliver ecosystem-based approaches that empower smallholder farmers and their communities to overcome challenges and thrive,” added Rodrigo Santos
President of Bayer’s Crop Science Division
Member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG and Executive Director Bayer Foundation
Pula Foundation and Bayer Foundation already demonstrated in 2021 that building such public-private partnerships to offer insurance protection at scale works: Together with the Zimbabwean Government and as part of the Zimbabwean Conservation Agriculture Program
they developed an insurance solution that protects the input investments farmers made
With the catalytic support of Bayer Foundation for this pilot
31,000 farmers were insured against climate risks such as droughts in the first year
which the public-private partnership network of Pula Foundation scaled to more than 1 million farmers after three years
“Climate resilience is not just about recovery but also about dignity and empowerment
We believe that insurance enables smallholder farmers to prepare themselves for an increasingly volatile climate
We have witnessed firsthand how farmers bounce back stronger after climate shocks when they have the right tools and support,” said Rose Goslinga
“This partnership with Bayer Foundation will enable us to expand our reach and ensure that millions more farmers can secure their livelihoods and build resilience against climate risks.”
around 2.33 billion people globally faced moderate or severe food insecurity
Smallholder farmers make a significant contribution to food security and supply in their countries: more than half of the food consumed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is produced by smallholders
they face heavy challenges that pose severe constraints to their ability to serve their communities
Examples are lack of climate change adaptation tools
lack of access to agricultural inputs and inadequate credit and insurance services
generates impact by supporting breakthroughs in science and social innovations that advance societal progress worldwide

Twin brothers and UCLA commits Jaron Pula and Kennan Pula have transferred to Highland (Utah) Lone Peak for their senior seasons: https://t.co/4PE2xusmKB pic.twitter.com/klwoBR0gVg
The Pula brothers were key pieces at Timpview
leading the Thunderbirds with a combined 2,509 yards and 22 touchdowns in their careers
They'll now take their talents to Highland Lone Peak high school
who were the runner up in 2024 for the Class 6-A state championship
The Bruins recruited the talented twins hard, and were eventually able to earn a commitment from the package-deal brothers. It was a monumental win for head coach DeShaun Foster and his coaching staff
Both of the Pula brothers have a chance to be absolute game-breakers at the next level
While there has been some speculation that this move could have an impact or be a sign of a possible flip
Their relationship with the staff and the program as a whole seems about as strong as it could be
Being a package deal is something the brothers had discussed for quite some time
just as they've done throughout their childhood
Getting to do that at UCLA will be the cherry on top
UCLA fans should feel great about the kinds of players they are getting with Jaron and Kennan Pula
They are extremely explosive and are intentional with their routes and doing their job
They have the instincts that are hard to just teach a receiver-you've either got it or you don't
The Bruins continue to stockpile weapons in this 2026 class. Of the four commitments UCLA currently has
The Bruins are building a ton of depth at the receiver position and are poising themselves to have an embarrassment of riches out wide
It will be interesting to see how many more weapons they take in this class as they continue to build it out and how they fill in other positions of need

The Bayer and Pula foundations have announced a commitment to provide insurance coverage for 10 million smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia by 2030
The Pula Foundation has developed scalable and data-driven agricultural insurance solutions designed to safeguard smallholder farmers’ investments in their farms
rather than waiting for handouts,” said Pula Foundation director Rose Goslinga
“This partnership with Bayer Foundation will enable us to expand our reach and ensure that millions more farmers can secure their livelihoods.”

SANFORD
It’s a known fact that if you don’t use it
older men typically experience a natural decline in muscle mass
with a projected loss of about 30% of muscle mass over a typical lifespan
and can lead to reduced strength and mobility
The 76-year-old took on a serious workout at Planet Fitness’ Sanford location
“The inspiration came from an article I read back in 2017 in the Wall Street Journal that said ‘Lift 100 tons’
“I liked the concept so I did it that year at the Daytona Beach gym
that was kind of neat that I accomplished another heavy season goal’
And then I did it again four years ago at the Planet Fitness in Lake Mary
you just do it and a few friends and family tell everyone
I trained up to it and I can knock it out.”
Interviewed before he started the monster workout
Pula laid out what it would look like.
so you multiply the weight on the machines by the number of reps
and I’ll be doing 35 different machines and 40 reps on each machine for two sets
I’ll work my way through the gym and hopefully be done in about two hours,” said Pula
The plan included full-body exercises done in three segments
He totaled about 1,400 reps with anywhere from 50 to 400 lbs.
I think it’s about 437 pounds for two sets of 40,” said Pula
Over his career, Pula served at Winter Park
“I was a parks and recreation director most of my career so I was in the office dealing with politicians
but I took lunch breaks every day to work out in the police department’s gym and then eat my lunch at my desk,” said Pula. “I really got into working out regularly when I was 43 years old
I love the people here and I love the surroundings
I feel good after I work out even though I may have a few aches and pains
but it’s great to come back and work out again.”
Pula said not only does he train for workouts like this
but if you’re not catching him at Planet Fitness
you can also catch him on the court—he’s a local ref for youth basketball games
“I’m a high school basketball referee for the Central Florida Officials Association
I develop my slow-twitch muscle fibers so I have a lot of endurance to be able to take the game,” said Pula
When asked if Pula thinks staying active is helping him do more in his senior years
he said people who are even older than him in the gym are his heroes
He said he hopes everyone finds inspiration to work out
“He loves to find unique things that he wants to dedicate some time to
and their children all came to cheer him on
“I hope it inspires my kids to take on things
they can take on whatever they put their mind to,” said Michael
Pula said he hopes to meet more great people in the gym
and hopes everyone finds a way to stay active
in their 60s or even younger and I love talking to everyone in the gym
and maybe people don’t do it because they don’t like working out but I always say find something you like and do that
my neighbor likes to walk and does five miles in the morning and five miles in the evening
just do something on a regular basis to keep your body going
I want to be as healthy as I can in my senior years.”
but I feel great,” said Pula.“Being overweight is hard on your body and being weak and frail is hard on your body
Working out is going to be hard on your body

IFC is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in developing countries
creates jobs and improves the lives of people
IFC advances economic development and improves the lives of people by encouraging the growth of the private sector in developing countries
We achieve this by investing in impactful projects
As the largest global development institution focused on the private sector
IFC operates in more than 100 countries around the globe
We apply lessons learned in one region to solve problems in another
IFC brings a clear set of advantages to the world’s most challenging markets
and a determination to achieve measurable development impact
Owned by 186 member countries and consistently rated AAA/Aaa
IFC aims to achieve our mission of promoting development by providing debt and equity to the private sector
through a range of benchmark and bespoke products
Rose Goslinga didn’t start out thinking she would run a business — but today
she is the co-founder and president of Pula
an agricultural insurance and technology company that designs and delivers insurance and digital products to help smallholder farmers in Africa and other emerging markets to manage risks and boost their income
IFC-investee Pula has partnered with over 70 insurance companies
and 100 distribution partners across the globe to reach more than 15 million farmers
Agriculture insurance provides farmers with financial protection against production losses caused by natural events
Goslinga discusses the seed that led her to launch her business
and increasing startup funding for women founders
Question: How did you start your entrepreneurial journey
Rose: I come from a family of missionaries and doctors
I remember when I told my father I wanted to study economics
his response was: “You want to make money?” But I’ve always been interested in finance
and in my first job as an economics fellow in Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture
all my pet projects were about how to get banks to lend to agriculture
it’s great to do finance but we can never really do agriculture finance without insurance.” That planted a seed for me
Question: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur
Rose: I started the first agriculture insurance pilot in Rwanda
I started the insurance program for the foundation of the Swiss agribusiness Syngenta
growing their project from 185 to 185,000 farmers
Working on these projects made me realize that I was passionate about this and wanted to reach even more farmers
my co-founder and I didn’t have money and we didn’t raise any money for the first three years
We were really focused on what the business model would be and how the business would make money long-term
but last year Pula insured six million farmers in 2023 alone
bringing our number to 15 million farmers since we started
Question: What has Pula achieved that you are most proud of
Agriculture insurance in developing markets has struggled
we develop insurance for smallholder farmers
We develop comprehensive crop insurance against all risks
All these things were unheard of or were considered impossible
and governments to sign up the farmers they work with
My team members take flights in the middle of the night to sit across from ministers of agriculture in the afternoon
Our actuaries work around the clock to ensure insurers are comfortable with our risks
allow them to thrive and achieve the impossible and reward them well
Question: Pula received funding from TLCom Capital’s fund TIDE
which has a goal of increasing financing for women entrepreneurs
Rose: I deeply believe in diversity of minds and perspectives to build solutions
Diversity comes from people with different backgrounds
Having different perspectives around the table when you must solve difficult problems is very valuable because you’re more likely to find the solution
having women and our perspective around the table is just naturally valuable when we’re solving hard problems
A Pula agent speaks with a farmer in Kenya
Rose: I’ve always felt I needed to be double sure that what I was doing would make sense and make money
We tend to be more careful but that also makes us less visible and less ‘daring’ as compared to our male counterparts
But I’ve always felt that you have to use your weaknesses to your advantage
Being conservative and careful can also be seen as being robust and trusted
my suggestion is that investors make the effort to get to know founders
It may take more time to find female founders
but I believe that it will be certainly worth the effort
Question: What is your message to other women entrepreneurs
Rose: I never think that because I'm a woman I can’t do something
and job prepared and I find that as long as I'm prepared
I can overcome anything that the world throws at me
IFC has invested in Pula through its investment in venture capital fund TLCom Capital's TIDE Africa fund with support from the We-Fi blended finance facility and with a direct investment together with the GAFSP Private Sector Window announced in March 2024 in Pula’s Series B fundraise
our polling is showing dissatisfaction with the incumbent Governor Lemany PS Mauga and Lieutenant Governor Talauega Eleasalo Vaalele Ale
with only 20% of respondents supporting them
and challengers Nikolao Pula and Pulu Ae Ae gathering a commanding 48% of support
In second place is the ticket of Vaitautolu I’aulualo and Mary Taufetee
with 24% of respondents backing their candidacies
incumbent Amata Coleman Radewagen (R) got the support of 64% of respondents
In second place was Luisa Kuaea (D) with 16%
followed by 12% of respondents who said they are undecided
Meleagi Suitonu-Chapman (D) and Fuala’au Tago Lancaster (I) trail behind with 4% each
approval voting would not alter the outcome but would give candidates on the lower end in support a boost
While the sample size for American Samoa was low
the record of Radewagen electorally matches with what could be expected
as confirmed by the favorability ratings for the officials
American Samoans will be able to vote from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm SST (12:00 pm to 12:00 am EST). We’ll have more polling results and election results once they are published

Special to the Standard-ExaminerWeber receiver Ian Elmore (4) breaks free from Roy's Colby Frokjer on Friday
Ian Elmore spent a lot of time speaking with receivers coach Skyler Ridley and safeties coach Joe Dale during Weber State’s recruiting pursuit of the Weber High athlete
But with Weber State playing a home game on a late-September weekend
most of the WSU coaching staff made its way north to see Weber High take on Syracuse
Elmore just so happened to catch nine passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns — scores going for 77
60 and 30 yards — while adding seven tackles on defense
‘after we watched that game it was kind of a no-brainer,'” Elmore said about how WSU coaches evaluated him
will follow his two soccer-playing sisters to Weber State after completing plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Associated PressBYU linebacker Sione Moa (41) plays against Southern Utah on Sept
“It’s a great feeling knowing all the work and my dreams have finally come true,” Elmore said
to sign with Weber State football Wednesday for the class of 2025’s regular signing period
He joins fellow Weber High alum Sione Moa and Syracuse defensive lineman Hoyt Pula as northern Utahns to add their names to WSU’s roster
it is a challenge but for us to be successful
we have to win those in-state battles to get those local kids and keep local kids here so we can … have their families be part of this thing,” WSU head coach Mickey Mental said about recruiting in Utah
Moa will spend his last college season at Weber State — standing to give a major boost to WSU’s linebackers along with Boston College transfer Sione Hala
Moa chose Weber over UNLV and Appalachian State
headed to Michigan State after both visited WSU together)
Moa said WSU linebackers coach Matty Ah You was the first to contact him after entering his name into the transfer portal
“no bad blood,” but that he’s excited to make an impact and step into a defense he already knows
“I wasn’t really chasing the biggest school,” Moa said
“I was looking for a bigger role … and maximize my film and get all the reps I could.”
Moa missed six weeks with an ankle injury last season and rotated in and out of reps before and after being sidelined
He and Hala messaged each other this winter about the possibility of teaming up at WSU; Hala and Aisea Moa have stayed in touch since playing at the Polynesian Bowl together
“I feel like my talents at Weber — I’ve got to earn the starting job and earn all the reps I can and show what I couldn’t show all the way at BYU
Moa and Hala both enrolled at WSU in January
Associated PressBoston College defensive back Sione Hala (7) is seen during a game against Florida State on Sept
“I’m excited to be home back in Ogden and play for coach Mental and coach Ah You,” Moa said
“Hoyt is a phenomenal football player and person
He is a kid who has just scratched the surface of his potential on the football field,” said Syracuse head coach Mitch Tulane in a statement sent to the Standard-Examiner
“Weber State is going to be thrilled with the athlete they are getting and will find out quickly that he can help them win football games at several different positions.”
chief among Weber State’s group of transfers are two quarterbacks: UTSA’s Jackson Gilkey and Cash McCollum of North Texas
Neither took snaps at their previous homes but came highly rated out of high school
Those two join junior Dijon Jennings and true freshman Kingston Tisdell (who signed early) in Weber’s quarterbacks group
along with Lone Peak High alum Easton Comer
“Really excited to just let those guys play this spring and see where the chips fall,” Mental said
“But I know I like where their heads are at and they’re working tremendously hard to be a leader and a quarterback.”
Those five will vie to replace Richie Muñoz; he started 17 games at WSU and has committed to transfer to FCS program Incarnate Word
WSU signed five players: quarterback Tisdell; offensive linemen Hunter
Alijah Bray and Brandon Meza; and defensive end Chevy Robinson
Below is a rundown of Wednesday’s signees for the regular period
former Northridge High player and Utah Tech transfer defensive back Mason Obray is committed to Weber State as a walk-on
Southern Utah defensive lineman Breken Bowen
announced his commitment as did Lone Peak High’s Jayden Mayberry; both are presumed to be walk-ons
WR: The 6-foot-4 receiver from Manti played one season at Snow College
catching 38 passes for 740 yards and 14 touchdowns

Really cerebral quarterback … everything you want at quarterback
LB: The 6-foot-1 Los Angeles native has two seasons left after three at Boston College; he enrolled at WSU in January
one sack and one forced fumble in 21 appearances at BC
He was a four-star prospect out of high school
Mental: “Fits all our benchmarks (for) linebackers — can run
loves football and is excited to get back closer to home so his family can be part of the games.”
after being rated a three-star player out of Maryland
spent two seasons at Boston College and one at North Carolina A&T without recording any stats
He appears to have one season of eligibility left
Mental: “A kid I’ve known about for quite some time on the East Coast
… Really good blend of size and speed on the edge … trying to put pieces in that position that can make an impact next year.”
K: The 5-foot-7 place kicker has two seasons left to play after two at Division III Lewis & Clark College
and 15 of 16 inside 40 yards while going 39 of 39 on PATs
Mental: “Very decorated kicker at the D-3 level
puts the ball through the uprights and has a great personality and great work ethic.”
spent one season at Iowa Western Community College
Mental: “Iowa Western played in the national championship in the JC ranks
and he fills a need after the departure of Grant Sands
who has been with us for quite some years.”
McCollum has four seasons left after redshirting one at North Texas
Of his 8,691 passing yards and 112 touchdowns with one 4A state title at China Springs High (Texas)
he tossed 3,154 yards and 47 touchdowns in his senior season alone
was in a quarterback battle for that second string
didn’t get much playing time as a true freshman

has the ability to be physical within the core of the box
Really excited about adding him right now.”
LB: A 6-foot-2 linebacker from Corner Canyon (Draper
Mental: “Was very productive at Corner Canyon two years ago
CB: The 6-foot-2 defender comes from Madison High in Dallas
takes really good angles to the football.”
K: A 5-foot-11 place kicker from South Summit (Utah)
Dominguez went 17 of 17 on field goals with a long of 44 in his last two seasons of high school ball
Mental: “Did a heck of a job at South Summit with all their kicking responsibilities
Love the power in his leg and his accuracy.”
S: Elmore totaled 1,077 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 18.9 yards per reception as a 6-foot-1 senior at Weber High School
he totaled 45 tackles and one interception
Mental: “Really productive football player
played both safety and wide receiver at a high level under former player Mo Cannon
really good instincts and good communicator on the field.”
DT: Finau was chosen as the Utah player of the year by MaxPreps and the 6A player of the year by the Deseret News
The 6-foot-2 Finau played offensive and defensive line
totaling 18 tackles and one sack as a senior
while also rushing the ball 14 times for 57 yards and 12 touchdowns
physicality that we’re accustomed to here at Weber.”
TE: Pidgeon is a 6-foot-4 tight end out of Bellevue
Mental: “Fills a big-time need for us as an attached tight end
Showed a great ability to add value in the run game … and be a weapon on the perimeter as a receiver.”
and blocked two field goals at Syracuse High School
I think that will be determined when he comes back from his mission … but really explosive player
Violent penetrator of the gap to disrupt the run.”
Wafer was the top receiver for a balanced pass attack at Frisco Emerson High
totaling 609 yards on 33 receptions (18.5 ypr) with seven touchdowns as a senior
His brother played football at Houston and he’s cousins with former NBA player Von Wafer
Mental: “Really good ability in the return game
… Was a mainstay for a newer program that caught fire here the last two years winning down in Texas
he’s only 17 years old and will keep growing.”

The twins have had their eye on UCLA for some time
Not only do they like their relationships with the staff and the school from the academic side
but the opportunity to play in Los Angeles and the opportunities with that factored into this decision
They went through the recruiting process together
After another visit to Westwood over the weekend
they found their spot and the Pula brothers are committed to the Bruins
“It means a lot for us to stay together,” Kennan said

Jaron Pula made a unbelievable one-handed catch for a 41-yard gain to the Orem 2-yard line
Timpview ended up going backwards on penalties and had a botched field goal attempt to kill that scoring drive
The Tigers responded with a long march and on fourth-and-goal from the 1
Ryker Mikkelsen broke a tackle and scored to trim the deficit to 21-14 entering the fourth quarter
Another great catch by Jaron Pula for 40 yards set up a Galea’i 13-yard run and Timpview went up 28-14 with 9:33 to play
Orem countered with a drive that ended with Tayden Ka’awa finding 6-foot-7 tight end Kai Wesley with a pass into the end zone
Wesley took a hard shot but held on and Orem was down 28-21 with 7:40 remaining
Aston came in and led the T-Birds on the clinching scoring drive
“When I heard Carson got hurt we had to trust in our backup
I think he was ready for it because he’d been practicing for his moment all week
It think the difference tonight was that we really came in prepared.”
Atuaia said he’s proud of the way his players responded after the cancellation of the Provo game on Aug
which was the result of threats against Provo coaches on social media
Since a 56-20 loss to California powerhouse Corona Centennial 56-20 on Sept
the T-Birds have won five straight games and outscored their opponents 203-45
having these guys have been a part of the program for the entire four years
knowing that it (the Provo cancellation) was a bad situation
that shows us what they can do,” Atuaia said
Timpview (6-2) came into the game as the No
The win on Wednesday would likely move the T-Birds past the Tigers for final seeding for the state playoffs
Pula 84 pass from Rasmussen (Thornock kick)
TV–Tua’one 28 pass from Rasmussen (Thornock kick)
TV–Anahu-Ambrosio 21 pass from Aston (Thornock kick)

has said that the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on imports from the US are a serious blow to transatlantic relations.
if these tariffs are maintained at these levels
they will severely affect relations in terms of politics and security.
"This is another serious blow to transatlantic relations
it is not that the European Union did not expect this blow as it was warned in time
the damage if these tariffs continue and are maintained at these levels will severely hit relations not only in terms of trade and economy
but also in terms of politics and security
which is the main axis of the transatlantic alliance," he said on Thursday on KTV's "Interaktiv".
Pula said that Europe is acting cautiously towards the new era of global trade that is different from what it has been so far.
He added that President Trump has no popular support for the tariffs he has imposed
"If economic and political pressure increases to that extent or Republicans see their danger in the upcoming elections
then we could see a turn against Trump from Republicans that would put an end to this economic and trade approach," he continued.
