Opening day sees Lonardi take second and Bruttomesso third into Sinj behind Norwegian
Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility) powered to victory on the opening stage of the 2024 CRO Race
netting his 95th career win in the process at the age of 37.
Having won the same stage in 2023, Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers) had prime position heading into the final sprint in Sinj but was overpowered by Kristoff who launched out of his wheel seated before opening up fully with 150 metres to go.
The Norwegian held his sprint for longer as the Italian faded and lost out to two of his compatriots Giovanni Lonardi (Team Polti Kometa) and Alberto Bruttomesso (Bahrain - Victorious) as he fell to fifth
Kristoff takes the leader's jersey heading into stage 2 from Biograd na Moru to Novalja where he will look for an eighth win of the season and continue charging towards the 100 mark
it was a bit stressful on two small roads with some sharp corners but we managed to stay in a good position together
we were four guys and I knew we were lacking a little bit of firepower against Ineos who didn't pull during the stage and have a lot of strong guys," said Kristoff as he described the run for home.
"So I was looking for Viviani in the last kilometre and I knew he had the strongest lead-out so then I started my sprint a bit earlier than him to take him by surprise and luckily I was strong enough to hold it all the way and no one came around
It was a big headwind but I still I managed to do it."
Kristoff was second overall at the CRO Race in 2023 but stressed that he wasn't close to that kind of shape this season
he did admit that this year was already a bigger success after taking a stage win - something he couldn't do last time out in Croatia
a small cold so we didn't really want to work today," he said
last year I was always second so I'm already happy with the race because I came in knowing I was not in top shape

Nese College of NursingNursing alumnus finds purpose in supporting home island of SaipanCredit: Sinj Lee
the interest in returning to his home island
After being admitted to University Park campus in 2004 as an undecided major
Lee began searching for his path and purpose
Lee’s mother suggested that he look into the University’s nursing program as it was a trusted field and a profession that could help others in need
as traditional Korean culture views nursing as a female-oriented role
Lee met with his adviser about the nursing program and felt the profession suited his personality well
“I felt very lucky to have been accepted into the program and start my nursing journey,” said Lee
“I wasn't keen on it very much because I grew up in Korean culture and it is still viewed as a very female dominant field
But I was able to talk to an adviser and we talked about what nurses offer
the Penn State Army ROTC program hosted a nursing recruiting event at Walter Reed Medical Center to illustrate for students the role of an Army nurse and the type of hospital environment they worked in
After the trip I was so impressed with military medicine and nursing,” said Lee
I joined the Penn State Army ROTC Program and they even provided me a two-year scholarship with stipends to finish out my nursing degree.”
during the height of the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan
Lee graduated with a bachelor of science in nursing and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S Army and an officer in the Army Nurse Corps
His first duty station was in the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl
Lee then went to work for the Army’s Critical Care Course in Ft
Lewis Washington to become a critical care nurse
Afghanistan for six months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and was then stationed in Ft
Kentucky at the 86th Combat Support Hospital
Lee felt it was time to leave the Army to go on to continue his education as a nurse anesthetist
He enrolled in the nurse anesthesia program at the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia in Nashville
Upon receiving his master of science in anesthesia in 2015
Lee began work at Medical Center Health in Bowling Green
who worked as a nurse in telemetry and cardiac cath lab
Breanna graduated with her associate's nursing degree from Western Kentucky University (WKU) and received her bachelor of science in nursing from Lindsey Wilson College
While her clinical nursing experience included telemetry nursing and cardiac cath lab nursing
she was sought out by WKU to help teach nursing students
it was important for my wife to see where I grew up,” said Lee
my wife explained how much of an impact we could make here with the medical skills we possess
I was hesitant because I never thought of coming back to the island
and after moving the process of finding a job for Lee turned out to be a long and arduous journey as Saipan had never had a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) prior
Lee was finally hired at the Commonwealth Health Corporation (CHCC)
after almost a year and a half of deliberation
He became one of the first CRNA’s to work on Saipan
paving the way for the profession on the island
Breanna was hired as a full-time clinical nursing instructor at the Northern Marianas College (NMC)
the college’s NCLEX pass rate was less than ideal
after expanding her nursing expertise to her students
Breanna has contributed greatly to increasing the college’s NCLEX pass rate
“The nursing program is very small with limited faculty
so Breanna has been giving countless hours of her own time in preparing the students to become quality nurses and pass the board exam
but she puts in so much additional time to teach med surg and pharmacology to help the students learn more,” said Lee
Sinj and Breanna have now been living in Saipan for close to three years and recently welcomed their first child
Breanna is currently enrolled in a master’s program in nursing education at Bakers University
decided to donate some of his extra time teaching at NMC too
“After watching my wife for the last two and a half years give so much of her time
I decided to jump in and help with the nursing program
I will be teaching pharmacology this semester and hopefully in the future as well,” said Lee
“We are doing our best to give back to the community I grew up in and bringing quality anesthesia and nursing education to Saipan

The Sinjska Alka is a chivalric tournament that takes place annually
knights ride horses at full gallop along a main street
aiming lances at an iron ring hanging on a rope
The name of the tournament derives from this alka or ring
a word whose Turkish origin reflects the historical co-existence and cultural exchange between two different civilizations
and stress the importance of participation in community life
Participants must be members of local families of Sinj and the Cetinska krajina region
clothes and accessories to support the continuation of the tradition
The tournament is also entwined with local religious practices
family visits and festivities at home and in the open air
The Sinjska Alka is the only remaining example of the medieval knightly competitions that were regularly held in the Croatian coastal towns until the nineteenth century
It has become a marker of local history and a medium for transferring collective memory from one generation to another

Portrait of Wally Neuzil (1912) Leopold Museum

is due to become a monument to the little-known redheaded woman
whose portrait became known as the Mona Lisa of Austria
She could also be called the face that launched a thousand lawsuits
since the painting's seizure from an exhibition in New York 20 years ago triggered a succession of restitution claims for Nazi-looted art
and she became his live-in girlfriend and model
Wally stood by Schiele when he was accused and jailed before his 1912 trial for corrupting the morals of young girls; he was acquitted of those charges
which is now the central attraction of the Rudolf Leopold Museum in Vienna and hangs alongside a self-portrait the artist made at the same time

Turning the heads of creatives and laymen alike
Aussie multi-instrumentalist turned composer Sinj Clarke has just dropped an immense debut album titled “Music for an Italian Afternoon”
Clarke’s fluidly visual release has something for the jazz cats
movie buffs and late-night YouTube fiends of this world
His title track ‘An Italian Afternoon’ is as Clarke puts it “best enjoyed with an Aperol Spritz somewhere along the Amalfi Coastline”
it’s a sonic elixir that we should all taste
we are reminded of French duo Air mixed with Toronto trio BadBadNotGood and healthy dash of some seriously evocative movie scores from the 60’s and 70’s
We caught up with Sinj for glimpse into his world
unearthing a stint as a 2000’s pop-punk icon
his newfound process of personal ‘creative blackmail’ and what may be next for the enigma that is Mr Sinj Clarke:
Music For An Italian Afternoon by Sinj Clarke
I started playing violin around 5 and quickly picked up piano after that
in fact I hated it… I hated playing music until I was about 16 when I was given Amnesiac by Radiohead and a Herbie Hancock greatest hits compilation album
I think they both really resonated with me and I was surprised at what music could be and that hadn’t felt it yet
I’ve been playing keys in a band called Velvet Trip which is a psychy-blues rock ensemble
Joseph Liddy and the Skeleton Horse which is a 13 piece funk band and then another called Lazy Colt which is quite ethereal and folky I guess
Umm… I dunno what you’re talking about (laughs)
I guess you don’t have to Google far to find that information
in a past life I was a pop-punk superstar although I never felt like one to be honest
old rickety composer not a spritely young pop-punk kid (laughs)
Everyone had their awkward emo-punk phase but not many of us ended up with it being splattered all over 13-year-old girl fan pages
I came across a book called ‘ The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron and realised I’d set some pretty dangerous limits for myself which weren’t true
I had always been an accessory to other people’s dreams and visions and hadn’t really taken the initiative to write anything of my own
I basically had a routine of intense journaling and bringing awareness to my inner critic
I basically had to creatively blackmail myself over four months through telling people I was working on the project
it’s due date and the musicians I wanted to feature
It was pretty interesting for me to be working with not only people I usually perform with but also some lovely people from the Sydney Symphony
I don’t think there is a musical hierarchy but that was pretty daunting for me
I had to step up into a leadership role while facing a lot of inner demons
I realise now that it was bold aiming for an 11-piece band and an accompanying string quartet for a first album
imagine being on a plane and the pilot opens the door and says
”sorry we’re heading in the wrong direction”
I’m lucky I had a bunch of amazing musicians on board
it couldn’t have gone any smoother in such a short amount of time
I kind of held this idea of having a narrative arc across the album
While composing I pulled up archived footage and old films to take me there… So I hope that resonates
light and dark moments and a dramatic pinnacle the brings it all together
I also had to remove my identity as a keyboard player and think for each instrument
I taught myself bass because I needed a dissociation point
I wrote half of it on a bass guitar that I had never really played before
It ended up being quite bold and full bodied – like me (laughs)
I just thought going through the usual avenues wasn’t for me
Sometimes the joy gets sucked out of music when you suddenly have to think about the rigmarole of promotion
With a first album I just wanted it to appeal to a space that I gather inspiration from
That for me has always been on obscure playlists and well curated YouTube channels so
I just reached out to a few and Adventures of Sound got back to me
People like them are taste makers who already reach an audience that is musically inclined or conditioned for my kind of sound
I was lucky to get that promotion on a global stage
I’ve been asked for vinyl presses and had lovely comments from all over the world so
it put into perspective the reach the internet has
I reckon… We are going to do a one off performance of that… When
I would be aiming for it to be a spectacle not just a performance
The way that it is arranged means it can’t just be a half-assed version of it
Music For An El Salvadorian Afternoon (laughs)
I guess the next one will be more practical… So it can be played live but still in the same vein
I’m not done exploring that sonic pallet quite yet
I’m aiming to have the Sinj Clarke band up and running in a few months as I move (to Melbourne)
so hopefully that all comes together in the same light
Like what you’re hearing? You can download Sinj Clarke’s Music For An Italian Afternoon for free from his website right here

2023 – Croatian politician and Sinj mayor Miro Bulj has said that he is forming a civil guard “because of migrants” and that “if they decide to shoot
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes
Sinj mayor Miro Bulj has publicly claimed that he intends to organise the self-protection of the residents of the wider Cetina area (which encompasses Sinj)
In the fight against the illegal entry of migrants into Croatia
he is calling for the army to be involved to help “the overburdened police forces at Croatia’s border crossings”
Sinj mayor Miro Bulj has stated his plans to have civil guards posted along the Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Sinj area
which sits in the Dalmatian hinterland and borders Bosnia and Herzegovina
is threatened by a wave of illegal migration
“All countries are currently closing their borders to them
look at the Dinara and Kamensko mountains… these migrants are simply allowed to enter
One single hair or fingernail of a child is more important to me than all of these migrants
Half of them are terrorists,” emphasised Bulj
He wants the army to join the Croatian border police at the border
but the Interior Ministry (MUP) says that there is no need for this because the security situation hasn’t remotely worsened and there is no immediate danger
61,000 illegal migrations have been recorded throughout Croatia
of which only two percent have occurred the area covered by the Split-Dalmatia County police department
The largest number of migrants has come here from Turkey
The number of illegal migrants over the last two months has decreased compared to the previous period,” reported the Ministry of the Interior

One of the largest celebrations of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary take places every year on 15 August in Sinj
More than 100,000 Catholic believers passed on Monday through the Gate of Mercy in Sinj
where they celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the largest Marian shrine in southern Croatia
The celebrations began with the Holy Mass at dawn
and continued with masses in the church every hour on the hour
at 7 am a mass was held at the old city where on August 15
during the miraculous defence of Sinj from the Ottoman conquerors
both Our Lady of Sinj and the Sinjska Alka knight game were born
The main celebration began at 9.30 am with a procession which was attended by some 50,000 people
Franciscans took off from the altar the picture of Our Lady of Sinj in its silver frame and took it to the main town square
the picture of Our Lady was welcomed by Sinj Alkar knights
including the winner of this year’s competition Tino Radanović
believers were sprinkling the picture of Our Lady with rose petals
the Golden Holy Rosary was carried in front of the picture
In addition to the Franciscans and Alkar knights
the picture was carried by members of various associations
At the head of the procession a cross carrier walked
followed by flags of Our Lady of Sinj and Croatia
as well as flags of a large number of parishes and a number of veterans and other organizations
They were all followed by a multitude of believers from Sinj
and pilgrims who had arrived from all over the world
When the procession arrived in front of the Municipal Court
a mass was held led by Split-Makarska Archbishop Marin Barišić
before the Archbishop invoked God’s blessing
words of thanks were said for the procession in Sinj
which is one of the most beautiful such events in the world
old cannons from the old town could be heard
and the celebrations ended with the singing of Croatian national anthem

2020 – Due to epidemiological reasons
the traditional procession through the city streets of Sinj for the Assumption of Mary on August 15 will not be held
revealed the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Sinj on Thursday evening
It warns that we are celebrating this year’s celebration of the Assumption in “unprecedented circumstances because we are surrounded by an invisible enemy
under the protection of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj
has been almost unscathed during this epidemic
In order to reduce the gathering of a larger number of believers in certain hours of the day
they will have Holy Mass almost every hour on August 14 and 15
and invited the faithful to carefully read the posters and choose the best time to attend Mass
only the changing parts will be sung: the entrance song
and the choirs will sing from the church choir
The Sacrament of Penance will be accessible in the cloister and the monastery courtyard under the aisle
so that there are as few believers as possible in one closed space
listen carefully to the instructions of the Civil Protection Headquarters
Be sure to disinfect your hands at the entrance to the church and the cloister and
Stick to those measures that the Church recommends: take communion only by hand
try to keep a distance while you go or wait for Communion
be with those who are from your family and your environment
stay at home,” continued the statement of the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Sinj
This year’s celebration of the Assumption is celebrated under the motto “Our Lady
“May he save us from all that we could harm ourselves and others
May he lead us on a path that will soften everyone’s hearts
strengthen hope and lead everything to effective love,” the Sinj monastery concluded

The Sinj club had a fantastic start to the match and led 5:0
though Mladost managed to reduce to the score to 15:14
the Sinj club would not give up and managed to achieve a massive 29:14 advantage
Sinj was named the winner with a result of 29:19
In a fierce battle with solid play by both sides
Sinj managed to overcome a dangerously tough opponent to win the Croatian Cup finally
they’ve played in the Cup final four times.
There was an explosion of enthusiasm both on the field and in the stands
This is the biggest success of a senior sports team in Sinj since Croatian independence
Many people compare this success of Sinj rugby to the legendary basketball final of the former Yugoslavia
some 35 years ago between Alkar and Bosna in Metković
is proven by the fact that the final game also had a humanitarian character
and instead welcomed donations for the treatment of Ivana Omrčena
a former Alkar basketball player who is being treated for a malignant illness.
Sinj rugby club, congratulations from the bottom of our hearts! You can see the celebration photos in the gallery on Dalmacija Danas

After a series of successful and well-attended workshops
under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia and in cooperation with the Cetina Region Museum in Sinj
organizes an educational workshop about traditional pottery from Potravlje after last year’s break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This year’s workshop will be held on Friday
October 22 at 18:00 in the Cetina Region Museum in Sinj
In the introductory part of this educational workshop
participants will hear a fascinating lecture by the museologists who will introduce pottery and its role in developing cultures and civilizations
one of the last masters of this traditional craft
will be able to try their hand at making clay pots with the professional help of master Knezović
It should be noted that the beginnings of hand pottery date back to the 4th century BC and that the village of Potravlje is its cradle
the century-old tradition of making earthenware until the Second World War was practiced by about fifty families in the villages of the Cetina region and Potravlje by about twenty of them
the famous Italian travel writer Alberto Fortis claimed that Potravlje’s rough pots were more durable than those from his homeland
This was the time when households used various earthenware pots
copper for cooking milk or for preparing turkey – rare corn polenta
peka – bell-shaped lids that covered the dough for bread or some other dish on the open hearth
Each vessel had a name according to its purpose (copper mlikarica
and various miniature forms of traditional dishes offered as souvenirs
Traditional hand pottery from Potravlje is an intangible cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia
the workshops will be held following the recommendations and valid measures of the CNIPH and the Civil Protection Headquarters
The Sinj Tourist Board has prepared souvenirs for all participants
which will be distributed at the end of the workshop
All those interested can send their applications to e-mail: info@visitsinj.hr or apply by calling 021 / 826-352 by Friday
with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia
organized two educational workshops for children and adults about traditional hand wheel pottery from Potravlje
the workshop for children was held in cooperation with the kindergarten “Bili Cvitak” and Mrs
who assisted Ivan Knezović in making objects from clay
the proud little participants took their handicrafts with them to decorate the premises of the kindergarten
the students of the 4th grade of the Technical and Industrial School of Ruđer Bošković
who participated in the school project Research of Cultural Heritage under the mentorship of Professor Branimir Romac
who regularly leads these educational workshops
is also among the last to engage in this traditional craft
Traditional hand pottery from Potravlje has had the status of an intangible cultural property since 2013
the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia nominated it for the protection of UNESCO
It is imperative to preserve this segment of traditional culture and continue living by passing it on to younger generations
with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia
holds workshops on Traditional hand pottery from Potravlje
Due to the large number of participants who wanted to try to make valuable objects and successfully implement all epidemiological measures
the workshops were held from 16:00 to 20:30
curator of the Museum of the Cetina Region in Sinj
gave an interesting and instructive lecture on traditional pottery
This was followed by a presentation and guidance of Ivan Knezović through the stages of preparation and processing of clay to the final pottery
Anyone who expressed a desire and interest could participate in making pottery under his expert guidance
Workshop participants received unique souvenirs personally made by the leader
and the youngest participants received small gifts and gingerbread as souvenirs
members of the Association for the Preservation of Heritage of the Cetina Region and KUD Dicmo performed traditional melodies of ojkavica: male and female rera
which is also on the list of intangible heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia
You can see the production process and scenes from the workshop below:
This workshop is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia
The Sinj Tourist Board genuinely thanked everyone who helped them in the realization of this project
Austria’s most prominent figurative painter of the early 20th century
A small grave marked 162/ D with a stone cross and a few broken blocks covered with moss in the Sinj graveyard has a very interesting story behind it
the muse of Austria’s most prominent figurative painter of the early 20th century Egon Schiele
Wally is the lady from his famous Wally’s portrait
a painting which is now worth 20 million dollars
Portrait of Wally is perhaps the best-known representation of Wilburga ‘Wally’ Neuzil
with her piercing blue eyes and an enigmatic grin
is often called the Viennese Mona Lisa while other paintings she posed for were Wally Neuzil in Black Stockings and Wally in Red Blouse with Raised Knees
all stunning works of art that have fascinated art lovers for decades
Even though everyone knows what she looked like
and last year’s exhibition Wally Neuzil and her Life with Egon Schiele at the Leopold Museum in Vienna tried to shine a new light on this mystery woman
Wally moved with her remaining family to Vienna in 1906 and met Schiele in 1911 when she was just 16 years old
According to old rumors from the art circles
she was Gustav Klimt’s model and perhaps even mistress before she met Schiele
any connection between her and the elder painter remains nothing more than salon gossip
Wally had to start working at a very early age and she usually registered herself as a salesgirl or mannequin
Artist’s models were often considered as
were dubbing as ladies of the night.
Wally became a lot more than just his model
She even stood by him when he was arrested for allegedly kidnaping a minor
he painted the now famous Portrait of Wally and a Self-portrait with Physalis
represented a turning point in his artistic career and a sign of his maturation
Schiele proposed to Edith Harms who lived across the street from his studio and was more socially acceptable than „poor“ Wally
After Wally refused to keep seeing him after he wed
Schiele’s way of parting with his muse was to paint „The Death and the Girl“
Wally Nazul then finished nursing school and after two years in a hospital in Vienna travelled first to Šibenik and then to Sinj where she worked as a nurse
far away from the art scene and the man who broke her heart
she contracted scarlet fever and died on Christmas day in 1917 at the age of 24 and was buried in the above mentioned unmarked grave next to her last love
an Austro-Hungarian officer who took his own life after gambling away the wages of his entire platoon
the girl whose piercing blue eyes grace the 20 million dollar portrait
might have had a short life ridden with tragic love stories
but at least she will no longer be in an unmarked grave in Sinj
Thanks to the Leopold Museum in Vienna that is now paying the annual grave fee
she will finally have her name carved in so that art lovers can come and pay their respect when in Sinj
there is simply not enough time to cover everything that is going on during the summer in Dalmatia
where there have been so many events around the Alka tournament
that it was just not possible to write about all of them on time
And so, I wanted to write about the Sinj Hair Braiding, which took place on August 8, but I could not find the time to do it. Turns out it was actually good to wait on this one, as the official pictures (Petar Malbaša) of the event got out just yesterday on the Sinj tourist board facebook page and so
I am glad to present you with the full visual
This initiative started just as a simple support activity for the 300th Alka tournament anniversary. Very similar to the men growing their moustaches for Alka
women wanted to contribute with something very traditional to Sinj and Alka and the whole Dalmatia – hair braiding
Women chose to meet at Luca Fountain and with several professional hair dressers
Women of all ages met to share something together and get their “hair done” in a traditional way
I am more and more discovering the simple beauty of hair braiding
I am very far from creations like this in Sinj
but I enjoy long hair braided in a simple way
After last year’s announcement that the Our Lady of Sinj project would be revitalized
initiated by Split-Dalmatia County in cooperation with the Shrine of Our Miraculous Lady of Sinj in Sinj
the Tourist Boards of Sinj and Solin and the municipalities of Dugopolje and Klis
the project of renovation and upgrade of the Our Lady of Sinj Trail is currently being implemented through the creation of a Virtual Walk and the creation of a new website
The Our Lady of Sinj Trail stretches on the Solin – Sinj – Livno – Tomislavgrad – Rama route and is 148 kilometers long
It is a pilgrimage route that has been used for centuries to walk from several directions to the largest Marian shrine in southern Croatia
The Our Lady of Sinj Trail project has been approved under the IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina program and relies on traditional hiking and equestrian trails and the abandoned Rera route
After the official completion of the project in 2015
there were numerous devastations on the track itself
Split-Dalmatia County initiated its reconstruction
due to which we all have limited movements and new market conditions and modalities
we have embarked on the first phase of revitalizing the Our Lady of Sinj Trail project
the project tries to bring all interested visitors closer to the entire offer on the trail (numerous sights
as well as tourist facilities) and interest them in future visits to the Our Lady of Sinj Trail and Marian shrines
The virtual walk is prepared by members of the experienced team of the Cogitolab agency in cooperation with the priests of Our Lady of Sinj priests
Michael the Archangel in Dugopolje and the Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Klis
which will provide them with the necessary conditions and help in creating content for many pilgrims who arrive in our southern Croatian Marian shrines
Marian shrines have always had a special place in the hearts of believers
They worshiped the Blessed Virgin Mary and prayed to her for help in difficult times and troubles
honoring her out of gratitude as the queen of the Croats
She has been called the fidelissima advocata Croatiae (the most faithful lawyer of Croats) throughout history
Accompanied by the celebration of bells and fanfare
the image of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj is taken from the church in a solemn procession through the streets of the city
It is a great honor to carry the picture on your shoulders
The historical connection between the faithful and Our Lady’s shrines is also important on the eve of September 8
the celebration of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary
which is especially solemnly celebrated in Solin
Rivers of pilgrims will flow from Sinj to Solin and from many other places in Croatia
It is a special experience to set off on foot along the ancient paved paths on a spiritual journey
and to find peace and refuge in the safe shelter of Our Lady
Pilgrims will take the votive step to the Immaculate Virgin Mary
along marked paths through picturesque areas rich in historical heritage
On the spiritual journey to the Heavenly Mother
they will pass by the remains of old paths and bridges
By developing the accompanying infrastructure and raising awareness of the immense value of cultural and religious heritage
the Our Lady of Sinj Trail is active throughout the year
not only during the feasts of the Assumption
The Our Lady of Sinj Trail is an excellent example of the functional coexistence of tourism and religion without disturbing the natural balance
It is also a valuable contribution to the tourist offer of Sinj
proof of smart disposal of cultural and aesthetic values and natural resources
which certainly gives a positive boost to sustainable tourism

was the main initiator of different cultural projects and events
This anniversary was a good opportunity to increase awareness about the Cetinska Krajina region
Sinj hs done amazing work in developing different tourism products and services related to local historical and natural heritage
the Cetinska Krajina has become the place for all sorts of active and cultural tourism
Sinj is developing more and more events related to local traditions and heritage
This article will try to recap all the valuable activities and traditions nurtured by locals
The lovely town of Sinj is located in the centre of the Dalmatian hinterland
Cetina River has its source here and the Cetinska Krajina region is surrounded by mountains Kamešnica
The power of the river is used for the Peručko Lake reservoir as well as for the Peruča Hydropower Plant
Cetina River provides spring water for the Central Dalmatian islands while Sinj gets its water from Kosinac and Ruda spring
Cetinska Krajina is proud of its natural heritage such as the significant landscape of Sutina and Rumin
The founding of Sinj dates to the prehistoric times according to some findings of Cetina culture in the region
A good geographical position and climate were attractive to both Illyrian tribe Delmati and ancient Romans
During the age of the Croatian kingdom fortified Sinj was the centre of Cetina County
At the end of 15th century Sinj was constantly under Ottoman attacks and it fell under its empire at the beginning of the 16th century
It was under Ottoman rule untill the end of the 17th century when it was taken over by Venetians
This period of history was the time of the most important legend related to Sinj
The legend is connected to the battle for the town
when 700 defenders of Sinj fought against tens of thousands of Ottomans
With the help of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj
the people of Sinj successfully defeated the Ottoman army
the Alka tournament has taken place every year since
This UNESCO protected knights’ tournament dates to the times of a glorious victory over Ottoman Empire when the people of Sinj wanted to show their devotion and respect to the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj who helped the people of Sinj in their battle
This knights’ tournament is held each year on the first Sunday in August and has three different competitions during three days
consists of a festive procession of Alka squires and their leader harambaša
The procession is followed by mace bearers
Turkish shield-bearer and edeks (horses) guides
The rest of the procession is reserved for Alkari knights and their commander alajčauš and the alkarski vojvoda (tournament master)
The procession is followed by the Sinj brass band and a large audience from all over the world
there are several conditions that need to be fulfilled
an Alkar needs to be born in Cetinska krajina and have ‘oko sokolovo i čvrsta desnica’ (hawk eye and strong hands)
An Alkar needs to be honourable and honest man and it is a special honour to be part of the tournament for all local men
this competition had several changes but the tournament still has the same importance in local peoples’ lives
The tournament rules remained the same during the time and are described in the following text
which in Turkish means ring and it presents the bottom from the saddle of a horse serascher-pasha Čelić who was trying to conquer Sinj)
When they aim with the wooden lance they can either aim at the smallest
The Alka is aimed during full gallop and this requires yearlong preparations for the tournament
The winner is the one who gets the highest number of punats or points during course of three races
they play again in ‘pripetavanje’ until someone wins the tournament
This unique tournament was first played in the times knight tournaments were popular throughout Europe
While all other tournaments disappeared during the course of time
Alka was preserved in Sinj and got world recognition as UNESCO protected heritage
Alka is also a symbol ofthe fight for freedom and peace
and it is the main example of reviving the history and heritage of Sinj
another big celebration for Sinj takes place
hosts the celebration of the Feast of Assumption and Day of the Town Sinj every August 15th
while on the day of celebration there is big procession in the town centre
The Image of Miraculous Madonna of Sinj is held usually by Alkari
Alkar squires and it is a great honour to be part of the procession
was brought from Rama at the times the people of Sinj went to find shelter from Ottomans
Except religious traditions this day is famous for the best party in town or locally called ‘dernek’
this is another great opportunity to taste local food
Local traditions of Sinj wouldn’t be the same without ‘mačkule’ and the Old Town fortress
mačkule (cannon balls) are fired from the Old Town fortress and they are sign of greatness of the event which takes place that day
Sinj has plenty of significant buildings and houses which became part of recognisable cultural heritage
We have already mentioned the Old Town fortress with church and star-shaped Kamičak fortress
Both fortresses are in the process of restoration and conservation
Kamičak fortress is used every summer as a unique stage for classical music concerts and it should be used in future as apermanent summer concert stage
there is Alka knights’ court or kvartiri
It dates back to the 18th century and was used by different armies located in Sinj and as the Alka knights’ base
Sinj in the 19th century had powerful local families who built themselves houses which are nowadays cultural heritage of Sinj
The most recognisable residential houses are Danek Villa and Tripalo Palace as well as Tripalo and Vjera Villa
All of them are unique and have cultural and architectural value even nowadays
Sinj is proud of its historical relation with football too
The proof the football was played in Cetinska Krajina in Roman times
is a tombstone of a seven-year-old Roman boy Gaius Laberious who is holding a ball
locals dress up as Romans and Illyrians and play football as it was presumably played before
More recent heritage is presented in different artwork
The most notable is definitely the Alkar monument – it marks the beginning of Alka Tournament Course (Alkarsko trkalište) – the place where Alkari start to gallop
The statue is work of Stipe Sikirica who also made Battle of Sinj monument on the doors of Church of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj
Sinj has specially built artwork – Stations of the Cross
It stretches all the way from the foothills to the church in the Old Town fortress
Sinj for a relatively small town has plenty of historical findings and heritage preserved in local museums
A definitive hit among museums is the newly opened Sinj Alka Museum which had 16.000 visitors from its opening in August 2015
Even thought they still don’t have their own website
the museum has a great interactive presentation of local history and the story of Alka tournament
Another museum is the Museum of the Cetinska Krajina Region – Sinj
It is the central place for twelve different exhibitions which present cultural and historical heritage of the Cetinska Krajina
Recently they became part of potential project for revitalisation of culture and heritage
the Museum will have more space for its exhibits and funds for permanent restoration & conservation workshop
Another place to see is the Archaeological Collection of the Sinj Franciscan Monastery
It is considered to be one of the oldest in Croatia
It has findings from prehistoric and Roman times as well as the ethnographic collection with well-preserved folk costumes
A valuable source for cultural and tradition keeping institution is Sikirica Gallery
This famous sculptor dedicated his work to Sinj and Cetinska Krajina
This Gallery is often the organiser of events such as concerts
exhibitions and gives support to the local community as well as to young unestablished artists
the best way to keep year-long traditions is through local food and traditional dishes
Sinj is famous for its delicious food and gastronomic heritage which is in correlation with historical and cultural heritage
Definitely the best known dish is arambaši and traditional pastries and sweets – uštipci and rafioli
Cetinska Krajina is proud of their delicacies like frogs and Cetina trout as well as with Dalmatian classics cheese and prosciutto
Prosciutto is additionally promoted in Sinj on at the recent Prosciutto fair as an authentic regional product with EU label of origin
For the most important town celebrations traditionally every family prepares excessive amounts of food based on the old recipes
People of Sinj were always known for their hospitality no matter what was their financial status and for the events like Alka each family is proud of their festive menu
Alka tournament except food preparation includes a custom when the Alkar squire gives domestic pullets
cheese and prosciutto as a present to the Alkari
Food offered for the Alkar winner and the guests is usually prosciutto and cheese
stewed savoury crabmeat and assorted pastries accompanied by local wine (often a mix of white and red wine called hrvaština)
the menu is similar – inevitable arambaši and roasted meat need to be on the menu
Arambaši are recently protected intangible cultural heritage and the name of the dish probably origins form Turkish word harambaša – in Alka the name for the leader of Alkar squires
Arambaši are filling dish made out of ground beef meat mixed with vegetables and wrapped in cabbage leaves
Cetinska Krajina is rich in storytelling heritage and various legends
The most famous one is definitely the one about Miraculous Madonna of Sinj and defeating the Turks
there are plenty of other local legends that are in tight connection with everyday life and superstitious beliefs
there are a lot of local customs and traditions which are usually related to different celebrations throughout the year
when all the villages in Cetinska Krajina have different carnival processions– the most entertaining ones are from slopes of Kamešnica Mountain – popularly called “Didi s Kamešnice” from Gljev
is the ritual of having a coffee on Sinjska Pijaca or so called Špica
Sinj is one of the towns in Croatia with the largest number of cafes per capita (some sources say there are 106 cafes in relation to 24.826 inhabitants)
Cetinska Krajina is well known for its traditional crafts
All the skills have been passed down from generation to generation
One of the most interesting crafts is for sure the making of tobacco pipes in a traditional manner in the village Zelovo
the craftsmen of Zelovo are famous for making handmade and unique children toys with popular motifs like butterflies on sticks
The village of Potravlje is famous for making different objects out of clay
peke (clay bell) and different food containers
Potravlje is well known for its traditional hand-wheel pottery
the Tourist Board of Sinj has organised educational pottery workshops in order to keep this tradition alive
Other villages of Cetinska Krajina like Gljev and Gala are well known for craft of making opanci (traditional footwear)
some villages are proud of their blacksmiths
while the village of Otok is known for Cetina boat making
The boat was important in everyday life through history as the main means of transport on the river Cetina
All these products were sold on local derneci and on fairs all over Croatia
Nowadays we can still see them being sold on fairs
but unfortunately there are less and less people interested in craft making
Most of the old crafts are listed under intangible cultural heritage of Croatia and the efforts in keeping them alive can be seen in different events like Rural products fair
Žabarijada (frog-jumping contest) and traditional fishing with Cetina boat
a special place is reserved for the traditions related to music and dance in Cetinska Krajina
The traditional dance of Cetinska Krajina is a Silent circle or Nijemo kolo – it is performed as a closed circle and sometimes accompanied by UNESCO protected ojkanje singling and occasionally with rera
Sinj and Cetinska Krajina standardised all the movements in dance while some villages kept their traditional way of dancing and people use this as a sign to determine who is from which village
It is performed even today on different fairs
folklore festivals and local festivities and celebrations
This unique dance is part of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
All the stated heritage and traditions are revived and kept thanks to locals who work hard to keep these traditions from oblivion
Individuals like craft-making families and different agricultural estate owners take part in this process
associations and cultural centres have organised efforts in reviving the traditions and combining them with tourism
Places to enjoy both nature and traditional food are definitely agricultural estates such as Panj
The little village Grab is the place with the oldest continuously working mills in Croatia
The mills are even more famous for their eccentric owner – Iko Samardžić who is known as a local poet and sculptor too
Sinj has a long equestrian history and it has five equestrian clubs thanks to its Alka tradition
Sinj is proud of all sorts of active sports such as skydiving
Sinj is part of the MedPaths project which has the goal to promote the region and adjust different hiking
equestrian and cycling paths throughout inland Dalmatian
especially cycling associations are proud of events like Cetina Adventure which combine both nature and local traditions in order to make this region even more interesting
The efforts for reviving the traditions go to all the cultural projects and centres like Alka Museum
Archaeological Collection of the Franciscian Monastery
Museum of the Cetinska Krajina – Sinj and media projects like Ferata newspapers and association SKUP
Viteško Alkarsko Društvo (VAD – Alka Knights society) is the main representative for keeping the Alka tournament tradition alive for more than 300 years
They also have a well-presented beginners guide to Alka on their Alka Wiki
Special mention in reviving all these traditions must go to the Tourist Board of Sinj
which is doing a great job in constantly promoting Sinj and Cetinska Krajina
The tourist board at the same time a valuable source of information about this region
Thanks to their hospitality and well organised website
they were a great source of information for this article too
after presenting the most interesting traditions
the only thing left is to go there and start exploring
A good starting point can be visiting Sinj Alka Museum and attending Alka Tournament this summer to see why people of Sinj are devoted to this special tradition for more than 300 years

Cetina Region’s Masquerade Festival should have been held for the seventh time this year
as well as the centuries-old gatherings of masquerade groups in the Podkamešnica villages
which were supposed to precede the festival and the usual final carnival events
Millennial photo of the Sinj region masquerades – DIDI / Šime Strikoman
numerous masquerade groups present themselves to the general public in one place
and noisy procession that maintains a long tradition
according to carefully and strictly established rules
Masquerades are the best bearers and guardians of carnival customs in the Cetina region
After the Holy Three Kings’ feast on January 6
they set out on visits to villages and hamlets
They are even included on the list of protected intangible cultural goods of the Republic of Croatia
Podkamešnička villages are villages at the foot of Kamešnica mountain located on Croatia’s border with Bosnia and Herzegovina
masquerade processions are a unique and original way of depicting ancient customs interwoven with the sound of masquerade bells and other accompanying rituals

each hamlet has its own masquerade group (Jelašce
and occasionally there are groups Glavičica-Priblaće
Strana with masquerades from Ovrlje and Korita)
masquerade processions take place in the villages of Grab
Masquerade procession in Otok / Monika Vrgoč
Masquerade procession in Vrpolje / Monika Vrgoč
The carnival procession’s schedule is based on traditional rules
At the head is a group of white masquerades and wedding guests
which symbolizes the end of winter and spring arrival

which is the procession’s main “task.”
and other wedding characters dressed in formal attire (folk costume)
taking care not to mix white and black wedding guests
who must never be in the same place at the same time
The Turk and the aunt’s characters are associated with the long presence of the Ottomans in this area
a masquerade group that criticizes current social and political topics without sparing criticism
They are bearers of the fertility cult who
invoke a better and more abundant annual harvest
mourning widows who shout funny and comic slogans
The most attractive and impressive part of the procession are the imposing “didi.” They wear sheep’s wool up to 1.5 m high on their heads and bells around their waists
They are dressed in old clothes sewn with colorful fringes
They embody the age-old ritual struggle of good spirits with winter
which they drive away with noise and jumping

Although carnival customs with similar themes exist in other parts of Croatia and Europe
they always embody the ritual struggle of good spirits with winter
“Didi” are welcome guests at festivals throughout Croatia and Europe and an inspiring motive for numerous scientific research
and lectures on the topic of intangible heritage

A mountain shepherd (Motacilla cinerea) nests on the cliffs of the canyon
The dense forests of the canyon are the habitat of the black beetle (Dryocopus martius)

Shallow ponds that remain in the hollows of the canyon during the dry season enable the survival of trout and crabs
and the wall lizard is the most common lizard
According to the geomorphological composition
the Sutina canyon is built of limestone and dolomite
and the erosive action reveals many fossils to visitors
The Sutina stream is a torrent stream that is poor in water for most of the year
Its main source is located at the foot of the hamlets of Mijići and Jurići in the village of Sutina
the Sutina stream also receives water from other sources
