will cease combine harvester production at its Županja plant in Croatia
Forbes Croatia reports that the Italian-owned SDF Group has decided to liquidate the Deutz-Fahr combine harvester division
the former Duro Dakovic plant will cease operations on 28 February 2025
to allow the brand to focus on its core business of tractors and special machines for viticulture
it is understood that the facility employed some 190 staff
The decision to liquidate the company follows total sales for the group of €44.2m in 2023
Sales for the wider SDF Group amounted to over €2bn in 2023
It is believed that there were previous failed attempts to sell the company
one of which was to a Chinese manufacturer
Peak production saw the brand build over 400 machines annually
The majority of these were retailed within eastern European markets
Further strengthening the decision to end production has been blamed on a reduction of orders from the Ukrainian market as result of the war
the brand has failed to further developments in recent years

which is suffering from landslides and record-high floods resulting from record rainfalls within a few days in mid May
Lily is raising money here to help her people back in Croatia
have left hundreds of people homeless in Bosnia
while thousands more were forced to flee their homes
The disaster is “the region’s worst flooding in recorded history,” AP reported
An estimated 3.1 million people out of a total population of 15.5 million have been affected by the floods in the Balkan countries of Croatia
wrote the following about her town’s plight:
The river Sava that flooded a third of Bosnia and killed a few dozen people earlier in the week was now threatening to flood our own town
“We found out from someone’s Facebook profile what a dangerous situation our town was in
This fellow citizen was alerting everyone to come out to the levee
My husband Kreso and many others responded
or army or first responders were there yet
“Seeing the river rise 13 centimeters an hour ..
the volunteers quickly realized the magnitude of the threat
filling out bags with sand and building makeshift sandbag walls
“I was growing more scared and concerned about my husband’s and my own safety
Anxiety was growing among the volunteers also
as they watched the river rising fast and not always having both sand and bags to keep on building up the lowest sections of the levee
“The chaos on the levee increased my horror and kept me awake and glued to the news all night
The river rise at Zupanja (peaked) at 1.5 meters above the levee
Knowing that only the makeshift sandbag walls kept us from getting flooded had not brought me much reassurance
And then I heard that the levee ruptured at the village Rajevo Selo
“Not much later we heard of another break in the levee
The water was gushing through the bottom of the levee in places
the first sign of the levee getting ready to break under the pressure of the massive amount of water
were filling out bags with sand as fast as they could
I forced myself to get over the shock and start filling the bags
I spent the rest of Saturday helping to patch up one weak area of the levee after the next
wondering if the river was going to keep on rising
and listening for a roaring sound of the levee breaking and flooding us too
was flooded by the water that covered Rajevo Selo and Racinovci
Even if they had packed their bags earlier
when the threat came they forgot everything and (ran) for their life...
“It was heartbreaking to watch what those people were going through
I decided to go to our local Red Cross office and help
That’s where I’ve been every day this week
handing out the necessities to the refugees
listening to their horror stories and cries
“These desperate people from the Bosnian villages escaped from the flood
thinking that they found a safe place in our town
Our town has been housing refugees not just from the flooded Croatian villages
Everyone is helping with what they can and everyone is being helped
The same people who fought against each other only 20 years earlier have united under the common goal: to protect ourselves from the raging river and to help each other.”
The niece ended with a plea for financial support: “Your donation will help buy building material
appliances and food once when people will be able to return to what’s left of their homes.”

Katarina Anđelković
As Glas Slavonije writes
and her book is about the first time football was played and the first time a ball was even held in Croatia
It is about a segment of the past of the city on the river Sava
about the time from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century
when industrialists from England arrived in Županja and built a tannin factory there because of the rich oak forests
The picture book tells the story of love between the industrialist Fred and Šokica (traditional local lady) Katarina
as well as the story of life in a Slavonian village about a hundred years ago.
The promotion guests were greeted by Hrvoje Tkalac
director of the “Stjepan Gruber” Museum
asserting that his colleague Marta had decided to show the city’s past in a charming way with her excellent work
museum advisor from the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb
both as a museum worker and as a Županja native
she is proud of the local team that decided to prepare a picture book
the first museum publication of its kind in Croatia
The story is told in a straightforward
truly local picture book contains all the topics a story must have
Nothing in it is made up; all the events really happened in Županja
is the author of the glossary that appears on each page
as well as the quiz at the end of the picture book
She presented the picture book through a conversation with Marta Huber and academic painter Mislav Lešić – Đurakov
The author admitted that she had been carrying the idea of writing for a long time
she often meets kindergarten and school children
so she tries to adapt the historical narrative for their age
and circumstances would be more understandable to children
thanks to vivid illustrations with a multitude of local natural and ethnographic peculiarities and details hidden on the pages
an excerpt from the picture book was read by Mayor Damir Juzbašić at the end of the promotion
The book can be purchased in the Stjepan Gruber Museum in Županja

Czech renewable energy producer GEEN Holding will soon start construction of its third biomass-fueled combined…

The Czech company already operates two cogeneration facilities on biomass in Croatia. Last December, a power and heating plant was opened in Županja. The first one was commissioned in October 2018 in Benkovac
the company will begin the final phase of preparing the site for the project in Gospić
while the start of operation is expected in the first half of 2021
The company has invested EUR 80 million in the first two power plants
GEEN Holding is not the only foreign firm to invest in biomass energy production in Croatia
The Czech company has invested EUR 80 million in the two units in Benkovac and Županja
Electricity from the CHP systems is distributed to the grid
The holding also announced it plans to focus on increasing the efficiency of the units in Benkovac and Županja
The company intends to use heat to produce pellets
GEEN has ten solar power plants and six small hydropower plants (SHPPs) in the Czech Republic and Slovakia
All photovoltaic or PV facilities have installed capacity of about 9.8 MW
The Županja unit has the size of of 4.9 MW for power and 8.5 MW for heat
Total electricity produced by all the firm’s systems is 113 GWh per year
HIŠ management board chair Željko Zadro said that of the 202 workers of the Osijek Sugar Factory
81 had already agreed to the termination of their contracts and would receive severance pay
Talks are underway with some of the workers to continue working at the Županja factory
while some 30 workers will continue working in the Osijek factory’s warehouse
while some might find employment in the Žito Group
HIŠ was founded in 2019 as a result of the merger of the sugar factories in Osijek
Asked by reporters if this was the end of the sugar industry in Croatia
Zadro said that “it’s a miracle we survived until 2020.”
“Halting sugar production in Virovitica and Osijek was a difficult decision but it is the only one that guarantees that we will keep sugar production running in Croatia
all three sugar factories would be closed next year,” he said
Zadro recalled that last year there were problems with contracts for the sowing of sugar beet
with contracts having been signed to sow sugar beet on around 10,500 hectares in Croatia and 1,500 hectares in Hungary
He said that HIŠ warned at the time that the area sown with sugar beet would suffice to keep only one sugar factory running but that HIŠ would invest additional effort to make it through another year
“We hoped that sugar prices would rise
that contracts would be signed for more hectares but unfortunately
the harvest is near and none of that has happened
We simply had to do this… to at least keep one factory running,” said Zadro
the world’s best known consultant for the sugar industry
had suggested that production costs would be the lowest at the Županja factory
the suspension of production in Osijek was for good
“We do not know if an agreement with Mercosur countries will be signed
to enable the import of raw sugar in Croatia
which would make it possible to open all three factories
It’s difficult to say what will happen
we have to be flexible and adapt to the situation but unfortunately we no longer have any reserves,” he said
Asked what should be done to increase sugar production in Croatia
Zadro said that in the old EU member countries an average 18,000 hectares of land is sown with beet per factory
while in the new EU members the average is 12,000 hectares
and he believes that with 12,000 hectares of land sown with sugar beet in Croatia and Hungary
Croatian factories could have a certain future
Asked if the sale of factory premises in Virovitica and Osijek was being considered
Zadro said that the infrastructure in question was large and that it required careful consideration of steps to be taken next
“You can start any production here because it can develop considering the available infrastructure
I do not know the answer to that question for now
and we have not discussed the topic with anyone yet,” he said
