Breaking news for everyone's consumption
A Salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 130 people in Chile may have been caused after food was contaminated with a strain used to monitor testing performance
The Salmonella Abony outbreak occurred from January to April 2024
Genomic evidence indicated that the outbreak strain was a clone of a reference strain
which is routinely used in microbiological quality control tests
According to information published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases
two healthcare centers in Santiago diagnosed 134 salmonellosis cases from January to March: 29 at UC-Christus and 105 at Clínica Alemana
All isolates were submitted to Instituto de Salud Pública de Chile for serotyping
Salmonella Abony was found in 56 of 97 cases with culture
18 of 56 outbreak isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing
According to data from the Government of Chile
287 Salmonella Abony isolates were collected between January and April from 12 of 16 administrative regions
Some isolates may have been obtained from the same patient
Infected people ranged in age from under 1 to 82 years old
More than 200 isolates came from Región Metropolitana
scientists did not have additional epidemiological information
so they could not investigate the outbreak’s source
Previous studies from Brazil and Nigeria reported on Salmonella Abony infections
and cases from Brazil were linked to the consumption of food containing chicken meat
is widely used as a control strain for testing culture media performance
Many suppliers sell it as certified lyophilized or ready-to-use reference material for quality control of food
Researchers said the evidence suggests the Salmonella Abony outbreak was caused by contamination of an unknown vehicle with the common reference strain
The findings raise concerns about the safety of bacterial quality control strains
Clinicians and health authorities should request strain characterization when rare or unreported serovars cause human infections
Data from the Chilean Agency for Food Safety and Quality (ACHIPIA) shows 728 outbreaks in 2022
The three main agents associated with outbreak cases from 2016 to 2021 were Salmonella
Salmonella infections were mainly linked to ready-to-eat food

Lorne Abony of Palm Beach knows what it’s like to be a gifted child
For a gifted child to be denied the opportunity to attend a special school to enhance his skills is something Abony can’t bear
When Abony found out that there are gifted children in the area who can’t afford to attend the Weiss School — the school his son attends — he decided to do something about it
Abony organized Tennis Tournament for Scholarships
an event recently played at The Mar-a-Lago Club
The two-day pro-am featured a group of local amateurs who competed alongside some of the top tennis players in the world
many of whom also were in town that weekend to compete in another tournament benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation
with all proceeds going to the Palm Beach Gardens school’s scholarship fund
Everyone had the time of their lives,” said Abony
who competed on the winning team with Jeff Secrest and Palm Beachers Russell Geyser and Tim Gannon
Abony said what set his tournament apart from similar fundraising events was that his tournament included “significantly more tennis.”
and this program was focused on being different,” he said
quality tennis and less on the pompous ceremonies
The guys who were there were there to play real tennis for a great cause.”
“We wanted to have results that are tangible and measurable
“We’re putting the results to work right away.”
“It’s an amazing accomplishment that we will be able to open up more scholarships for gifted students,” said Denise Spriou
which serves children in kindergarten through eighth grade
Students are accepted based on test scores
Spirou said Abony “has been a blessing through his generous philanthropic vision,” Spirou said
said Spirou’s work with the tournament was a “Herculean effort.”
“a lot of people gave their time and money,” he said
Spirou said the school always welcomes donations to its scholarship program
Over the course of three decades in business
I have been on nearly every side of an investment
As the founder and CEO of several companies that went from startup to IPO
I’ve raised more than $1.7 billion through public and private debt and equity markets
I’ve negotiated hundreds of deals on behalf of myself and partners in fields from media to agriculture to health care
and the ugly of what can transpire when it comes to investing
The lessons – and scars – of this experience have driven me to make increasingly significant investments in Israel over the past decade
as I grew up in a deeply Zionist household—and have been connected to the Jewish state since I can remember
the cold-hearted business case for investing in Israel has never been clearer
Here are the top three reasons why I continue to double-down
First, Israeli start-ups have the best track record of success. Israel now has 41 unicorns, the most per capita in the world. I’ve been involved with a number of these unicorns and witnessed their explosive growth, like Voxia, the world’s first AI-powered cold calling engine, and Moon Active ($1.25b)
one of the world’s fastest-growing mobile game companies
You just can’t argue with the Israel’s success in penetrating new areas of technology
While many of the smartest global investors have caught on to the secret of investing in Israel
the space remains much less competitive than Silicon Valley
foreign investors are not competing against the largest VCs
which means we can secure more favorable terms and gain access to brilliant founders with a proven track record whose equivalent might not be available in the U.S
I’ve become increasingly popular in Austin among the investor community by providing access to these deals
We even created a group called TLV-ATX that brings together 100 of the most brilliant Israeli founders living in Austin
with numerous 9- and 10-figure exits among them
Israeli companies are uniquely positioned to pioneer the technologies of the future
Israelis bring together a density of expertise
bold attitude that allows for risk-taking and experimentation
and unique pipeline connecting world-renowned academic institutions with business
I recently joined the company’s board – and have seen up close the technology’s transformative potential to advance environmental sustainability, improve wellbeing, and provide solutions to so many other issues. Like so many other Israeli companies, Pluri encourages us all to break the boundaries between what ispossible now, and what could be possible tomorrow.
Israel’s founder, David Ben Gurion once said that in Israel, “in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles.” I am confident that the economic miracle that has been the Startup Nation over the past two decades is just getting started. Smart investors will seize the opportunity.

As voting for the U.S. elections in the 39th World Zionist Congress nears conclusion—voting closes May 4—American Zionist Movement (AZM) Executive Director Herbert Block said there were few barriers of entry to voting in what Jewish leaders are describing as a consequential election.
We are here today because Jewish fathers and mothers wanted more than happiness from their children.
The bipartisan group includes Los Angeles representatives, Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) and Ted Lieu (D-West LA).
Speaking ill of someone once most likely leads to a second time. And hearing gossip, just like the flu, is contagious.

A For me it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see employees in a way that they didn’t know the CEO was watching them. For me to get a first-hand look on a day-to-day basis, I can go to a job site but people would know the CEO was there and they would be acting differently. I learned more about our business in those 10 days undercover than I have in any other time in my life.
Q One of the staff you met with, Leila, expressed concern about your recent M&A with DMX and how she was fearful of losing her job. Did that affect you on an emotional level?
Q Your employee Devin seemed to understand how his role fit into the bigger picture of the company. Is that something you strive to achieve among all staff?
Q How did you determine how much you would give to each recipient as a monetary gift at the end of the show?
Q Were you at all concerned that other staff would feel slighted that they didn’t receive similar generosity?
A It was 100% a concern. I was mindful of the fact that John had been a technician for 27 years, and there are other guys who have been doing it for 40 years. And their bonuses are in market but they’re not getting $40,000 gifts bestowed upon them. I had connected with these people and wanted to help but didn’t want to come across as unfair to other employees. I felt comfortable that these were personal gestures, which is why I felt comfortable having them be different numbers.

What kind of a vacation can you enjoy if you work all the time
It was a question that resonated with Lorne and Wendy Abony
when I was working really hard — I am from Toronto and I was the CEO of Fun Technologies and on the road a couple (of) hundred days a year — I wasn’t that good with vacations,” says Lorne Abony
whose company specialized in online sports games
thanks in part to problems with the island’s communications network
which led to trouble maintaining contact with his business colleagues
I’ve got to go.’ And we went back to Toronto.”
including the possibility of buying a vacation home in a warm climate
“My wife asked me if I had spent time in Florida,” he says
so we started to look at homes in Boca (Raton).”
they drove to Palm Beach and “fell in love” with the island
They also discovered a Palm Beach Regency-style house at 695 S
“We walked into this house and bought it immediately as a vacation home
We ended up spending so much time that I ran my business from Palm Beach and our vacation home turned into our home,” says Lorne Abony
who has owned the house in his name since 2008
10-and-a-half-bath house — with 11,519 square feet of living space
priced at $13.5 million by agents Paulette Koch and Dana Koch of the Corcoran Group
The Abonys completely renovated the Regency-style home
which was designed by Clarence Mack in 1953
According to records at the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach
Broadway producer Horace Schmidlapp bought it in the 1970s
The Abonys commissioned architect Tui Pranich of Miami to gut the house and modernize it — and also to add some 3,000 square feet upstairs
He and my wife redid the house with an Art Deco feel
which looked like Beverly Hillbillies’ ‘cement pond’ and put in the zoysia grass.”
Palm Beach Regency-style houses tend to be formal
Ceilings are high with deep crown moldings
arches abound and there are gleaming marble and hardwood floors
The main staircase in the core of the house is quite dramatic
a guest suite and library are adjacent to the formal entry
The kitchen area provides access to the two-car garage
The central part of the house contains the living room
opens to a covered loggia overlooking the pool and whirlpool spa
To the rear of the house is a large master suite with doors in the bedroom that offer views of a side garden
Bedrooms on the second floor work well for guests
“It’s like a 5,000-square-foot guest apartment
Also upstairs are another master suite with doors that open to an expansive deck
a second-floor living room and a bedroom with a fireplace
which included choosing the color palette and adding the striking steel mantel to the fireplace in the enclosed loggia
“It was her idea to make upstairs and downstairs master suites
add decks and set up the outside areas as visual art spaces,” he adds

Austin will serve up a Mylan World TeamTennis squad next year
and Andy Roddick will be the marquee name for the appropriately named Austin Aces
Roddick helped the Springfield (Mo.) Lasers to a runner-up finish this year in TeamTennis
The Austin resident’s rights were acquired from the Lasers for financial and draft considerations
and he will play for the team relocating here from Orange County
it will be great to wake up and go play a professional tennis match in my hometown
He was able to do that two years ago when a Roddick-led Davis Cup team played Spain in a quarterfinal match that packed the Erwin Center
“A big part (of the move) was seeing how succesful the Davis Cup was here,” Roddick said
It brought in something like $7 milllion to the city.”
Roddick and women’s star Venus Williams invested in World Team Tennis earlier this year
but the Austin team was purchased by entrepreneur Lorne Abony
who moved from Toronto to Austin this summer
“He’s a tennis nut and a good businessman,” Roddick said
Abony said he’s looking to add other recognizable names besides Roddick to the team’s roster
“We are aggressively seeking top tennis players in the world to play here
Having Andy on board is extremely helpful,” Abony said
“I think WTT is the best product that’s out there
and Austin is the largest city in America without a major league sports team.”
The Aces are negotiating for a playing venue
Crowds at TeamTennis matches are typically a few thousand fans
The players on the coed teams are typically younger players with a big name or two sprinkled in
John McEnroe and Jim Courier played a few matches
Venus Williams missed matches this year because of a back injury
Roddick said he started playing TeamTennis as a teenager
“It was a real valuable 14 matches in 21 nights
World TeamTennis was co-founded by Billie Jean King in the 1970’s
quicker and more colorful than standard tennis matches
“It’s kind of the antithesis of traditional tennis,” Abony said
“It’s about noise and music and shouting.”
one each of men’s and women’s singles and men’s and women’s doubles plus a mixed-doubles set
but as soon as I lace them up I’m at the mercy of the coach,” Roddick said
when teams play seven home and seven away matches during the regular season
The Aces’ roster will be determined in March
“I’m very focused on providing the best product for the city of Austin,” Abony said
Added Roddick: “It’s a great show and I think Austin will embrace it.”

This 10-bedroom Atlantic Canada vacation mansion is complete with private beaches
a custom go-kart track and a baseball field
Multimillionaire Toronto technology entrepreneur Lorne Abony is selling his property on Lake Utopia
two guest houses and several private beaches
Realtor says Lorne Abony’s $9.64 million dollar house may take six years or more to sell
N.B.—A multimillionaire Toronto technology entrepreneur has been so far unable to sell his one-of-a-kind
10-bedroom Atlantic Canada vacation mansion
mansion has been on the market for nearly two years
and comes with a hefty price tag: $9.65 million
“You have to see it to believe it,” said Fredericton-based realtor Scott MacTavish
who has been working to sell the luxurious property
as you would expect for a $9.6 million asking price
there are three homes on the property totalling about 27,000 square feet — the main house and two guest houses — and more than 100 acres of “unspoiled natural beauty” on Lake Utopia
It was built by Abony about four years ago in Charlotte County to have a getaway close to his wife’s family
is a well-known technology and media entrepreneur from Toronto
which includes the one-time Muzak elevator-music business
and in 2004 became the youngest CEO of a listed company on the Toronto Stock Exchange
He eventually sold FUN Technologies for $484 million
He’s currently the CEO of FastForward Innovations
who was once featured on the CBS reality show Undercover Boss
also recently unloaded another mansion — this one in Florida
Abony sold the eight-bedroom 1950s-era Regency-style house for $9.64 million early last year
The publication reports that Abony and his wife divorced in 2014
and he took sole possession of the Palm Beach house as part of the settlement
His New Brunswick property is carved into a lush forest that surrounds picturesque Lake Utopia
located roughly 70 kilometres east of Saint John near the Bay of Fundy
Among its many lavish features are a baseball field
MacTavish said Abony — an avid tennis player and owner of the California-based professional tennis team the Orange County Breakers — may keep a couple of tennis courts for personal use
“It’s just a very magnificent property,” he said
“We’re hoping for that person who likes seclusion and privacy and wants a place to get away.”
It may be New Brunswick’s most expensive real estate listing ever
and is currently one of the most expensive in the Maritimes
11,000-square-foot home is currently up for sale on Halifax’s Northwest Arm for $10 million
MacTavish conceded that selling a home worth more than what many people make in their entire lives is not an easy task
“It’s not something that’s expected to sell like a typical residential home and Mr
“But we’re confident there’s a buyer out there in the world.”
He said he’s now looking south of the border for potential buyers
we’re hoping it will bring someone up who wants to get away and just relax and enjoy the beautiful Canadian countryside,” said MacTavish
But as for the reason Abony is selling the four-year-old home — MacTavish said that’s confidential information

2013 at 9:08 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}If you plan on watching Undercover Boss on Friday night and have dined at Moe's Southwest Grill in Smithtown
some of the scenery on the show will be familiar to you
The show was filmed in the Route 111 eatery for the episoide that will air on CBS at 8 p.m
The undercover boss for this episode is Lorne Abony
the company that provides the music and visual media for Moe's
"They (CBS) contacted me probably a month ahead of time and they asked if they could film here
they were very good," said Moe's of Smithtown Owner Bill Mullaney
Mullaney said he will not appear in the episode but did have a chance to meet Abony
he had someone with him the entire time that wouldn’t let him talk to anybody
they didn’t want anything getting out," Mullaney said
To avoid having anyone know Abony was the CEO and Chairman
Mullaney said the Muzak music system installer was told that Abony was in a contest to try to change his life working with Muzak to do an installation and the installer would report to the company later on how he worked and if he was suitable to work for the company
Mullaney said he only found out that the episode would air on Thursday and was not sure if his specific location would be mentioned in the episode

A University of Windsor law graduate is scheduled to be featured on Friday’s edition of the CBS television series Undercover Boss.
Lorne Abony, who graduated from Windsor in 1994 and is now CEO and chairman of Mood Media, a company valued at $1.3 billion, will work hand-in-hand with front line employees in this week’s episode.
Article content“My legal education in Windsor was fundamental in teaching me how to think about problems, how to challenge traditional ideas and how to subject thoughts to rigorous scrutiny,”Abony is quoted as saying on the university’s website.
His company provides music, digital signage, messaging, social/mobile applications, location-based services and scent marketing to retail stores, hotels, restaurants and businesses such as Gucci, H&M, Abercrombie and Fitch, Nike, Hilton Hotels and AT&T.
In 2001, Abony co-founded FUN Technologies, an online skills game site which eventually attracted 25 million registered users. He was named to the Globe and Mails’ Top 40 under 40 entrepreneurs list in 2006, a year after selling his 51 per cent interest in FUN to Liberty Media for $196 million.

This portends danger for the actualisation of the eighth item on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which targets to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
Daily Trust checks showed that public spaces have been converted to dump sites while streets are now a ‘safe’ haven for open defecation
These spaces are found in many communities across the country which expose residents to diseases such as cholera
It is common to see food vendors and shops doing businesses by some of these locations
During an event to celebrate the National Sanitation Day in Abuja
the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment
said access to sanitary facilities remained a mirage to a vast majority of Nigerians
While noting that many people still use the bush and water bodies as their regular means for excreta disposal
she said many institutions do not have sanitary facilities or that such facilities are short in supply
She revealed that the Federal Government has commenced sanitary inspection of its establishments including ministries
and markets to enable it to address the issue of open defecation
the sanitary inspection of some identified communities will be carried out by the ministry’s health officers in collaboration with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) and Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB)
The development brought to the fore the roles of environmental health officers and inspectors in schools and communities in time past to achieve a cleaner and healthy environment and cannot be overemphasised
Environmental health officers ensure that homes and workplaces are safe
These inspectors were always on a routine visit to schools to check if pupils were properly dressed and ensure that the school environment is hygienic enough for studying
They were also present in streets to help enforce sanitation by residents and as a result ensured the environment remained clean and conducive to live in
But they have disappeared from the scenes and residents now have a field day degrading the environment
The National Council on Environment had in 2016 agreed to bring back compulsory monthly sanitation to help address the issue in the country
Now with the declaration of June 29th as National Sanitation Day
Odusote said the day is declared to institutionalise sound environmental sanitation practices as a lifestyle amongst the populace through massive awareness creation and reward to innovative best practices
who spoke to Daily Trust said the use of environmental officers will help in checkmating the menace of environmental degradation especially irregular dumping of refuse
He said people littered the streets not minding the consequences on the environment and their health
“and the AEPB which is supposed to ensure the environment is clean is busy chasing hawkers in the streets to confiscate their goods instead of ensuring a safe environment.”
He said if the health officers can be empowered to move around as it was in the 80s
speaking of the time environmental health officers were employed to enforce clean environment
said the officers were known by different names across the country
“The environmental health workers were known as the Dubagaris in the North and Wolewole in the South
pox and other diseases alongside with the white man
“Today we are coming back with Federal Government’s serious commitment to sanitation and environmental health services
But the council has taken notice that diseases strengths
He also identified Lassa fever as one of the environmental related diseases that have caused many deaths in the country in recent years
Abonyi said: “The index case of the main carrier of Lassa fever or the reservoir is the multimammate rat
“So if our environment is fashioned that man
his food and other material will be secluded from rat
prepare food and eat it in an environment devoid of rats.”
He said a clean environment would help check the spread of the deadly fever
“Even when we make mistakes and get Lassa fever from rats
the environment can also help us to prevent the transmission
Everybody must wash their hands before a meal and after toilet
If it becomes our culture and we have the capacity to live in houses without rats
“Most of the diseases that are confronting us today with the very big threat are no longer bacterial diseases neither are they protozoa diseases even though bacteria diseases are still available,” Dr Abonyi said
“Now other diseases have gone viral so you will hear of only viral diseases and some of them have gone beyond the virus
The focus of the council is to produce environmental officers to the highest class
but their capacity is low both in quantity and quality. If you look at the greatest enforcement of sanitation
the municipality in Nigeria is the local government and it does not have financial autonomy
“You notice in Nigeria today with those who are already recruited;a recent survey by the council shows that the minimum environmental health officers across Nigeria in the local government system is on grade level 12
that means they are not being employed recently.”
Meanwhile the Permanent Secretary has said in other to promote clean and safe environment
is presently reviewing the sanitation policy of 2005 and its guidelines on safe excreta and sewage disposal
She also said the ministry has initiated a programme tagged “Clean and Green” to end open defecation by 2025

then said hello to the local primary school leaving the area through the schoolyard
The morning of the 4th of June was not an ordinary morning in the town of Abony
sunny morning when Péter was sitting in his kitchen sipping his morning coffee
he noticed some strange movements looking through the window
he discovered that a bear appeared in town
He rushed to call for his son and show him the bear
He went outside when the animal saw him and ran away
Being afraid that locals come across the dangerous creature
not even his wife at first when he told about the bear
The police officers kept laughing and telling him that he only saw a big dog and imagined everything as he was still sleepy in the morning
She discovered it in front of her front gate
She clearly remembered its characteristic movements
The police did not believe her story either
Experts say that there must be more bears outside in Hungary
