marking a pivotal shift in advocacy for care workers’ rights in Hungary
This development comes as care professionals across Hungary
mobilize to demand fair wages and improved working conditions
“We have unionized because we realized that we have to stand together and move together to achieve real change,” stated Hajnalka Kanyó
the secretary of SZÁD’s new chapter in Balassagyarmat
This Northern Hungarian town’s social care center has become a focal point for the union’s activities
providing vital services such as home assistance and psychiatric care
have shown robust support since the union’s formation in late March
The union’s efforts highlight a broader national trend where care workers are uniting to confront a cost-of-living crisis and seek the respect their roles demand
“Organizing is never easy but these new SZÁD members made their collective voice heard,” remarked Alan Sable
He described the Balassagyarmat chapter as a beacon of hope and a critical step in fortifying the sector for both employees and the individuals they support
UNI’s Central European Organizing Centre (COZZ) is aiding long-term care workers in Hungary by providing training
SZÁD’s strategy includes establishing local unions across Hungarian care facilities to enhance working conditions and care quality
aiming to transform these positions into sources of decent employment
“So far we have only been complaining – now we are taking action.” This statement underscores the union’s transition from frustration to active engagement
setting a course for substantial reform in the care sector

The Slovak-Hungarian Gas Interconnector (SK-HU Interconnector) is a 113km-long gas pipeline traversing the territories of Slovakia and Hungary
Construction of the pipeline was completed in March 2014 and commercial operations began in July 2015
The two-way gas pipeline stretches 94km into Hungarian territory and 19km in Slovak territory
Its annual transmission capacity is approximately 4.5 billion cubic metres
of which the capacity in the Slovak-Hungarian direction is approximately 500,000m³ an hour
and that in the Hungarian-Slovak direction is approximately 200,000m³ an hour
Eustream and Hungarian Gas Transit signed the joint investment agreement in May 2012
The Hungarian gas transit was established in January 2012 as a result of secession from the MVM OVIT National Power Line Company with the purpose of implementing the project
MVM Hungarian Electricity and MFB Invest own an equal share in the company
The first steel pipes for the project were delivered in December 2012 and the pipeline construction started in March 2013
The Ahuroa underground gas storage (AGS) facility is located in Taranaki
it is the first such facility to be developed in the country
It has an extraction capacity of 45 terajoules a day (TJ/d)
The pipeline forms part of the larger North-South gas corridor and enables Slovakia to access European gas projects such as the South Stream and the proposed Adria LNG terminal (Krk LNG terminal) in Croatia
It provides access to the Western-European gas networks for Hungary
Out of the overall Hungarian gas import capacity provided by pipelines
the new pipeline accounts for approximately 10% to 15%
More than €160m (approximately $199m) was earmarked for the project
of which €21m (approximately $26m) were spent for the Slovak section’s development
The European Investment Bank (EIB) supported the plan by providing €30m (approximately $37m) under its European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR)
to support projects aimed at making energy supplies more reliable
It also hoped to boost Europe’s economic recovery and help reduce greenhouse emissions
The SK-HU Interconnector has joined the high-pressure system
near the village of Vecsés in the suburbs of Budapest
The connecting point of the two national sections is the Ipoly River
A horizontal directional drilling method was used to lay the pipeline under the river
It traverses nine Slovakian municipalities
The Hungarian section starts from Vecsés and culminates in Balassagyarmat
A total of 1,507 steel pipes were utilised for the project
The project also involved the construction of the Szada compressor station
a new metering location and block valve stations
Three depot sites were constructed at Balassagyarmat
Romhány and Érsekvadkert to support the pipelaying activities
The Hungarian section of the pipeline was installed by OTF General Contractor
while the Slovak section was constructed by BMS Bojnansky
Pipeline materials were supplied by ThyssenKrupp Mannex

only indifference and disregard for human dignity exasperate her
Eszter Darvas-Tanácsné Novák has been touched by difficult fates and has always striven to do what she can - even when it is impossible
she collected and delivered warm clothes to people staying at the reception center in Balassagyarmat
Most of them fled Afghanistan empty-handed
The railway station in Ercsi is not a particularly attractive place
rainy morning in mid-October: you're already shivering from the all-encompassing grey
It's a relief to see the blue steeple of the Reformed church and the welcoming parish building after a 20-minute walk
This is where Erik Darvas-Tanács and his wife Eszter raise their eleven children: the eldest is 19
"It's a woman's world," says the mother with a wry smile
since eight of her eleven children are girls
and the other eight children are at school or kindergarten
"It's also a civic shock that there are so many of us
most people are already asking parents with four children if they wanted the youngest
but there was no question that they wanted to live in a big family
"People ask how we can listen to all our children
but we do it because it's just the task we’re given
Twenty-four hours is usually enough," says Eszter
and the ministry that need to fit into the day: Eszter has organised and run several large-scale fundraising events in recent years
"Our first big collection was in the winter of 2004
they didn't want to let us cross the border
I don't know what was more surreal: stopping to argue with the Romanian border guard or travelling at night on the serpentines in pouring snow
we simply knew that there was no turning back
she organised a Facebook fundraiser for forgotten children in Transcarpathia who were abandoned in hospital by their parents after they were born
she was moved to action by the fate of five hundred and seventy Afghan citizens who were delivered to our country
"From the first news reports of the Taliban takeover
I felt I would have to deal with this story
Then I saw a report about the refugees in the reception centre in Balassagyarmat
and I had the feeling that something had to be done" Eszter says of the beginning
including many Muslims who had been living in the country for years
The initiative has grown into an uplifting and inspiring coalition
the handover had to be brought forward by a week
a driver had to be found for one of the vans
and it turned out that they would not be granted access to the reception centre after all
"I couldn't think of anything except that I had to go ahead until I handed them the coats and shoes
and saw that there was something for each child's feet
it always turns out that the hardships were worth it: thanks to the early handover
we managed to get everyone warm clothes before the cold weather arrived
they found a shop in the city centre where they could place the donations and where the residents of the shelter could come out
we were quite an unusual sight as we were packing the bags with our occasional driver
and the women and children started to come over
It was moving to meet them and see in their eyes the traces of what they had been through
Here in Hungary we can't imagine what it's like to have to decide almost overnight
to listen to why they had come and what they had left behind
The most heartbreaking was the story of a little boy who was staying with a family at that time and that family had no time to take him home
"His parents say it's good that it happened this way
because it gives him a chance for a better life - but it was hard to see and deal with the separation."
but there is not a day that goes by that Eszter doesn't recall a moment from one of her encounters
"It was fantastic to be hugged by all the families as they left
The women were cute when they were touched by a sparkly ornament or a little kindness
and they were very touched that we collected headscarves for them
The children were delighted with the toys - it eased a little of the uncertainty they have to endure
I was also impressed by their discipline: everyone took only what they absolutely needed
It was good when the male members of the group said "God bless you"
I felt that it is not only what they bring is new for us
but also everything they encounter here is new to them
the encounter and conversation was eye- and soul-opening."
Eszter is often asked why she keeps getting involved in projects like this
if the many tasks given to her by her family and church are not enough
She says she feels she simply cannot help herself
because she believes there is nothing more important than listening to the voice of conscience
the whole family is involved in fundraising
The children involve their schoolmates and often take part in the organisation with an enthusiasm and drive that belies that of adults
They help not only those from distant countries
but also those who live near them in difficult circumstances: they have even given their own shoes to a gypsy child so that they could wear them to school
"I was thirteen when I was called to the ministry
this vocation was linked in me with a social sensitivity
I announced to my parents that I was going to spend three weeks in Dunaalmás to help out in the nursing home there
I had wild ideas as a teenager: first I wanted to be a missionary in a third world country
then I wanted to join the Missionaries of Charity
and then I wanted to work with handicapped children
but what frustrates me the most is the callousness - when people don't dare
don't want to come out of their bubble and face the reality around them
If one sees the plight of people in the world day after day
one simply has to be critical of the passive
which want to be louder than the voices of mere goodwill
because it is impossible not to notice someone in crisis
It pains me to see Hungary locked in fear and the hatred that comes from it
When we turn to others with openness and trust
we experience that we are equal to the other person
a whole new quality of life - something Eszter experiences regularly
she met many Muslim mothers and groups with whom she was able to interact in great harmony and enthusiasm
respecting and accepting each other's identity
I spoke to a father who had worked for the Hungarian army in Afghanistan for fifteen years
For security reasons they cannot keep in touch
They only had a few hours to decide whether to come or stay
and their packed luggage was lost in the mad scramble at the airport
but the point is that they made it out safe and sound
and not just because of the large number of children
We are more connected than we are separated
They are full of values that can only make us more

The lifeless body of a Hungarian mother living in the United States was found in a duffle bag by passers-by in New York
told her youngest son that she was going to the theatre with friends
According to Borsonline
Orsolya’s husband has received death threats since the investigation began
The Hungarian news outlet reached out to the mother of the victim who still lives in Hungary
The Hungarian news portal writes that the victim Orsolya G
was living in the USA for several years but regularly visited her home country
She was married to a wealthy businessman named Howard Klein
Leo and Jamie and a family dog; they lived in a $2 million house in Forest Hill
only the upper class can afford a house there
and the education and well-being of their two sons were the most important things for the 51-year-old victim Orsolya G.
The murder must have taken place last Friday night. The father and their older son, the 17-year-old Jamie were away on a holiday, out of the state. According to a since-deleted Twitter post from the day the mother was found, the two wanted to visit Ann Arbor, in Michigan, Daily Mail reports
the NYPD received the first call a few minutes past 8 a.m
on Saturday but did not dispatch any personnel
The department shortly received a second call by a man named Van Nostrand
who told the police that he was walking his two bloodhounds that morning when the animals started to behave strangely
The 51-year-old man told the investigators that at the time he found the bag he first thought that it was a mannequin doll inside
he realised that it was a real body in the bag in a fetal position
Nostrand then noticed the blood and immediately called the police
‘I thought, “Oh my goodness,” and called police,’ said Van Nostrand, who added that he told dispatchers who answered his call, “There’s a body in this bag”,’ – Daily Mail reported
they noticed the blood trail that led them directly to the house of the family
The police officers made an “emergency entry” since they thought that the killer was still inside
Neighbours reported seeing the policemen escorting the youngest son away in handcuffs
but he was released shortly after the police realised he had no knowledge of the crime
the murderer sent a message via Orsolya’s phone that read “Your family is next!” to Howard Klein
who later told the press that he thought he and his family was in danger
The newly released CCTV recordings showed a hooded man carrying the duffle bag in the neighbourhood possibly with the body already inside based on its shape and position
Borsonline found the Hungarian mother of the victim who did not want to give an interview but told the portal that the foreign media wrote many false facts about the circumstances of the death of her daughter
The old lady also added that Orsolya’s father died last year
was actively taking part in the life of the local Hungarian community and was proud of her origin
