Lake Balaton’s waters and wildlife are under serious threat as the Hungarian Sea is polluted with sunscreen
prompting significant concern among experts
the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute held a conference titled “Honestly about Lake Balaton”
The meeting focused on pollutants that significantly disrupt the physiological processes of aquatic organisms and pose a threat to the entire aquatic ecosystem
including hormones and various cocaine derivatives
Recent findings from the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute indicate significant human interference
threatening the lake’s living systems and potentially jeopardising its future use
noted that the lake is contaminated with pollutants akin to those found at a crime scene
stated that 11.5 million cubic metres of treated wastewater are discharged into the Zala River and subsequently into Lake Balaton annually
with an additional 2.2 million cubic metres entering the lake from local baths
It is estimated that 2.5 tonnes of sunscreen dissolve into the water from bathers’ skin each day
The research team tested for 134 active substances in the Hungarian Sea
or 72 if considering the entire water body
The highest concentrations were residues from antidepressants and epilepsy medications
significant amounts of cocaine and its derivatives were detected again this year
likely linked to the music festival held there
Research has also revealed serious threats to the wildlife in Balaton: UV filters have doubled the number of water voles
while hormones in the lake have caused premature hatching of snail embryos
“This situation is not only an environmental issue but also a moral one
It is everyone’s responsibility to respect and protect this national treasure,” said Gábor Molnár
Director of the Balaton Development Council
experts agreed that urgent action is needed to prevent this massive pollution from having irreversible consequences
Gábor Molnár concluded by emphasising their aim to facilitate dialogue among various interest groups
thus helping to identify problems in a timely manner
and implement measures in a coordinated way

Those who do not respect Hungary’s laws and regulations “do not have to stay in Hungary in any capacity”
said on the closing day of the 17th Hungarian Assembly of Lawyers in Balatonalmádi on Saturday
In his talk on the legal stay of third-country citizens in Hungary, Pintér noted a regulation that entered into effect in 2024 which declares that “Hungary belongs to Hungarians”
may only fill positions in Hungary that can’t be taken by Hungarians
was that guest workers are not allowed unlimited stay
and their stay is not extended automatically
those who are expelled from the country have to leave
adding that this was the responsibility of the person or entity who brought the individual in question to Hungary
Pintér noted that Hungary provides protection to anyone arriving from Ukraine who is in direct need of it
Hungary has welcomed some 13 million people from Ukraine so far
Around 50,000 people applied for temporary protection by March 31
of which 44,000 applications have been approved
More than 1.4 million of the 13 million refugees from Ukraine declared that they were fleeing the war
adding that the authorities have issued temporary residence permits to 245,000 people so far
A transparent and simple legal system is needed both in Hungary and the European Union
Justice Minister Bence Tuzson said at the closing plenary session of the 17th Hungarian Assembly of Lawyers in Balatonalmadi on Saturday
calling for laws that support competitiveness
Tuzson said the EU was falling behind its economic competitors
adding that the legal system had become increasingly complex in recent years
He cited the example of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
which he said could put EU member states at a disadvantage to countries that did not apply such rules
The minister said the government has streamlined 20,000 pages of laws
adding that transparency was equally important
Tuzson also talked about the importance of speeding up judicial processes
which he said could be achieved through simplified proceedings that could produce a first-instance ruling within 30-60 days
Are we perhaps witnessing a return to the spirit of the 1920s and 1930s
I genuinely don’t see how this statement could in any conceivable way be seen as controversial
Hungary has an ageing & declining permanent population with below replacement fertility
leads to more pensioners than working age taxpayers
Normal developed nations run modest permanent migration schemes
and keep budgets healthy by running high temporary resident ‘churn over’ who pay taxes especially Áfa
Includes seasonal &/or project workers
self funded retirees and long term temporary employees or investors
Hungary for populist electoral reasons is trashing it’s own economy and budgets by Fidesz promoting pensioners and/or regional base over other concerns eg
While Hungary blocks off revenue streams from temporary residents
it’s faced with increasing old age dependency ratios 65+ years/20-64 years; more pensioners accessing and tugging on budgets to access more pensions and services
Without temporary resident churn over and a suboptimal tax system reliant on Àfa
budgets are not sustainable and it’s unclear what Fidesz can or will do
Increase taxes for wealthy or reduce service delivery for Hungarians
The Balatonalmádi Amaretto ice cream parlour won the competition with an exotic mango-buckthorn flavour
That was the 10th time the Balaton Tourism Association announced the contest in search of the top Balaton ice cream flavours
The jury considered the harmony of the flavours, the aesthetics, the condition of the cream, creativity and innovation with new ingredients when deciding about the best flavours. Fruits, wines, dairy products, and herbs common around Lake Balaton were a priority
from where the Somogyi Fagylalt Műhely did not compete
The following became the top 10 in Ice Cream of Lake Balaton 2023:
The owners of the Balaton beaches have prepared for the opening; the prices have not changed in the beaches with entrance fee – said Győrffy Árpád
authorities of owners and contractors believe that this year will be better than the previous rainy summer
they have also made some improvements; most of them are waiting for the EU’s applications
new water facilities and added bike storages
they have installed devices which help handicapped people to get into the water; also
they have made volleyball fields and adventure parks
They are trying to keep the previous years’ prices but the operational prices increased
The beaches which were free remained free this year also
the Siófok and Balatonalmádi beaches will be open at the official beginning of the season: at 15th May
The other beaches with entrance fee will ask for entrance fee from the beginning of the Summer Vacation
Most of the beaches are open already and there is a buffee at most of the places
the daily adult ticket will be the most expensive: 1000 huf in the main season
they decreased the prices with further 10 percent; therefore
the ticket will be 800 huf at the city’s beach
The Esterházy beach at Füred with start with last year’s prices which is 980 huf
At the rest of the beaches there is some increase at some places
but usually the daily adult ticket is between 450 and 750 huf
students and retired persons usually pay 50 or 60 percent of this price
It is becoming more common to introduce the family ticket and there are some beaches where it is cheaper to go in at the last couple of hours
