MD (WBFF) — BARCS Animal Shelter is out of space after receiving 100 new dogs in 48 hours and asking the Baltimore community for help
BARCS representatives said most of the animals are large adult dogs who are scared
confused and really in need of a home for the holidays
BARCS says they are working really hard to get the animals adopted but need the community’s help to keep going
The fees will be waived from Wednesday December 3rd through the end of the month
BARCS says with 100 new mouths to feed and many of the animals requiring urgent medical attention
the costs are already mounting and becoming overwhelming
But every dollar given is matched and helps provide the care they need

BALTIMORE — Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter suspended all dog intakes because an uptick in a respiratory illness
The shelter has seen an increase in cases of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) in the past six to eight weeks
Some cases are not responding to treatment and have progressed to pneumonia
requiring extensive treatment and isolation
BARCS medical team will reassess this decision after two weeks
“To save and protect the animals currently in our shelter
it is necessary to pause dog intakes while we focus our resources on treatment and containment,” said Dr
MPH and BARCS Chief Medical Officer in a statement
“The safest place for a healthy dog right now is with their owner
and we need pet owners and our community to work together to delay surrendering dogs or bringing in lost dogs until BARCS is in a better situation to safely care for them.”
This temporary suspension allows the team to focus on isolating and treating affected dogs
This disease is not transmissible to other species
BARCS will continue adoptions and fostering of healthy dogs
and those with mild symptoms who can receive treatment in a quiet
less stressful home environment separated from other dogs
To help reduce the spread of illness in the community
Anyone adopting a dog from BARCS will receive information about Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), including a list of symptoms to watch for and guidance on preventing the spread of illness.BARCS will provide updates on its website and social media channels
Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter temporarily suspended dog intakes Thursday evening due to a growing number of canines with a respiratory illness
There has been a “significant uptick” in canine infectious respiratory disease complex over the last six to eight weeks at BARCS, the organization said in an online statement.
Some of the animals with the illness have not responded to treatment
which requires extensive treatment and isolation
The extra treatment placed a “significant financial strain on BARCS” and the staff asked for donations to their medical care fund
The temporary suspension will help decrease the number of dogs in the shelter so the staff can focus on isolating and treating those that are ill
using enhanced quarantine measures while not exposing new canines to CIRDC
The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.
“While this disease is not transmissible to other species
its impact on our canine population has been severe
and we must take immediate action to safeguard the health of the animals in our care,” the BARCS statement read
the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) will temporarily suspend all dog intakes due..
BARCS encourages pet owners to watch for those signs of illness
make sure their pets have updated vaccinations and only allow their dog to interact with known healthy dogs
BARCS Chief Medical Officer Bobbie Mammato said in a statement the safest place for a healthy dog is with their owner
He also asked that the community work together to refrain from surrendering dogs or bringing in lost canines until the illness is contained
Adoptions and fostering healthy dogs will continue
Dogs with mild symptoms and can be treated in a quiet home
are also eligible for adoption and foster care
There is not a date when dog intakes will resume
but the shelter will post on the website and social media with updates

— It's a situation that has never happened before at Baltimore County Animal Services
the city shelter isn't able to take in any new dogs
"At the request of Baltimore City Animal Control
Baltimore County Animal Services will now be housing all non-emergency dogs that the city animal control seizes," Abigail Isaacs with Baltimore County Animal Services said
"And that is in effect now until Wednesday when other partnering organizations are able to step in and help as well."
BARCS announced Thursday that the shelter has seen a rise in cases of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex over the past several weeks
Some of those cases are not responding to treatment and have progressed to pneuomnia
which the shelter says requires isolation and more extensive treatment
The medical team will reevaluate in two weeks but for now
the shelter doesn't want to expose any new dogs to the illness
and is focusing on caring for the sick dogs
"We would hope if we were to ask for help with something like this as well
and so we're really here to fill this need right now," Isaacs said
But it does mean more stress on the staff at the county shelter
who have already been dealing with a big influx of animals coming into their care since the start of the year
Isaacs anticipates they'll take in an additional two to four dogs a day from the city
"But we really don't exactly know the number
and still that's upwards of 24 extra dogs coming into our care
in addition to all of the owner surrenders and strays that we take in from Baltimore County."
So if you've ever wanted to foster or adopt a dog
Baltimore County Animal Services doesn't usually offer adoptions on Mondays
"Especially because it’s a holiday weekend
if you can take a dog for a long weekend and help us out
you are allowed to hold that dog for up to 72 hours in your home while actively trying to reunite it with their family
So that keeps the dog from coming into the shelter unless you’re unable to find their family."
Her family is bringing home a second Norwegian Elkhound
"I've been reading where they've just been overpopulated with so many dogs
We hadn't really wanted to go adopt a dog but two is better than one so now we're gonna have two dogs and it does make us feel better that there's more space for somebody else," Ward said
Baltimore County Animal Services is only accepting dogs through a partnership with Baltimore City Animal Control. The shelter is not taking drop-offs from city residents. If you need help with a stray animal or surrendering an animal, contact Baltimore City Animal Control directly
BARCS posted more resources and ways to help on Facebook
On Friday afternoon, BARCS announced that "long-time friends of BARCS Betsy Sherman and The Sherman Family Foundation have generously pledged a $20,000 matching gift to the BARCS Medical Care Fund
doubling every donation we receive from today through Friday
treatment costs for each sick dog range from $530–$780
with additional expenses for dogs requiring emergency hospitalization as well as extra PPE and other medical supplies
Some cases have progressed to pneumonia despite treatment
necessitating intensive care and isolation—significantly increasing BARCS’ medical expenses to save their lives
Donations to the Medical Care Fund ensure these dogs receive the critical care they need and help BARCS move closer to safely reopening for intakes."
(WBFF) — A phone scam has emerged involving fraudulent phone calls towards the owners of missing pets
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) and the Maryland SPCA issued a joint statement about the scam
ALSO READ | Take A Paws: BARCS's program Dogs Day Out
scammers are spoofing the shelters' official information to contact individuals who have posted about their missing pets
claim the missing animal has been found in critical condition
Payment is then requested via a third-party payment app
“This scam first appeared last fall and seemed to disappear for a while," BARCS Director of Philanthropy and Communications Noelle Patterson said
"Now it’s back—and unfortunately it’s affecting multiple shelters in our area."
While there's no "fix" for these scam calls
it is recommended to file a report with the FTC or FCC to "create a record of incidents for when better solutions are developed." Additionally
the shelters ask that reports are submitted directly to them via email at info@barcs.org and info@mdspca.org
We only know that her pluck and perseverance must have kept her afloat until recently when
she found her way to a network of benevolent strangers
she reached the zenith: a loving home to finally call her own
came to be snuggled into her new favorite hiding spot under the sideboard in my upstairs hallway
who became part of our family about three weeks ago
is one of roughly 12,000 animals that will come through the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) this year
we don’t always know what their lives were like before they got there
But it’s easier to write the rest of their story if we help provide a happy ending
“The message isn’t all doom and gloom,” said Bailey Deacon, director of philanthropy and communications at BARCS. The shelter is adopting out a record number of pets, but they can’t keep up with the number coming in
Deacon said there’s a high volume of animals in BARCS’ shelters and foster homes
from the moment we open to the moment we close,” she explained
“The population really can change minute to minute.”
That’s why she likes when the public visits in person, during regular hours at the shelter and at live adoption events there and in the community
a photo on a website can’t always tell you the full story (though I imagine most cats and dogs aren’t posting purposely misleading 20-year-old selfies from when they had more hair)
“There are people who go in thinking ‘I’m looking for this specific breed
this age,’ and [if] they don’t see it on the website
“But what happens all the time is that they come in looking specifically for a small young dog
but they’re going home with a 90-pound dog that’s six years old
We certainly wound up with a different cat than we’d planned. This is the first time I’ve formally adopted a pet, having found my previous three kitties through what’s colloquially known as the cat distribution system
where felines just kind of show up in your life and claim you
I went on the BARCS site hoping to find a young
who might be an enthusiastic mouser and grow up alongside my son
But then we saw the beautifully unimpressed face of an 8-year-old
22-pound calico called Mama Cass because she
“Do you think she can move enough to catch mice?” Brooks asked
and the fact that older kitties are less likely to be adopted than younger ones
director of marketing for Federal Realty Investment Trust
the leasing agency for The Avenue at White Marsh
where Cass had been living for about three weeks as their office cat
whose property sponsored a pet adoption event this summer and asked what else they could do to help
very large cat who was unhappy and cramped in her confines at BARCS
sometimes wandering to the cat gate erected for her so she could watch the birds and passersby
It was clear how much the staff loved her when we went to meet her
but all of them have pets at home and couldn’t take another
This is what we know about Cass’ life before she came to BARCS and then to Geiger: She was surrendered to Baltimore City’s Office of Animal Control by a woman who said that when she rented a new home
she’d discovered “there was a cat there,” Deacon said
“She never wanted a cat and could no longer care for the cat
which can happen if a cat — or a human — senses they’re unwanted
positively wanted in the Streeter-Zervitz household
made the decision not to call her Mama Cass
The late singer has one of my favorite voices — I sang “Dream A Little Dream” to my son as a baby — but I didn’t love that my new furry feline’s name was about her weight
We’ve also had to correct people online who have fat-shamed our cat
which Geiger said happened when she was at their office
“We would have the door open and people would walk by and talk about how fat she was,” she said
Cass, as Fergie once sang
both through diet food and living in a three-story house whose steps she gladly climbs when things get noisy or she hears the bag of kibble shaking
It’s taken a few weeks but Cass is finally exploring
and left it in the doorway of the guest room where she hangs out — perhaps as a warning to any others
(We have legit not seen another mouse since.)
Geiger noted that adoption fees for pets 5 years old and above
The truth is we love her enough that the cost wouldn’t have mattered
We’re not sure if Cass totally loves us yet
I cannot ask her how she feels about our home or her old life
We just hope she comes to enjoy her new one

and pet owners are being targeted by phone scammers
They are warning pet owners who posted about their furry family members being missing online to watch out for these callers
When they call people who have missing pets
they falsely state their pet has been found in critical condition and in need of expensive medical procedures
The scammers then ask for a payment for said procedures via Cash App
NOTE: BARCS or the MD SPCA will ever ask for these types of emergency payments
as they don't have official Venmo or PayPal accounts
“This scam first appeared last fall and seemed to disappear for a while," said BARCS Director of Philanthropy and Communications Noelle Patterson
"Now it’s back—and unfortunately it’s affecting multiple shelters in our area."
there is no real defense against spoofing scams
The shelters are asking for people who have encountered these scams to file reports with the FTC or FCC and to the spread the word
“The best defense we have right now is our voice," said Ethan Salem
Director of Marketing and Communications at the Maryland SPCA
and never send payment or give out personal information over the phone."
If you receive a suspicious call, do not send any money. Instead, report it by emailing BARCS at info@barcs.org or contacting the Maryland SPCA at info@mdspca.org

BALTIMORE — BARCS is offering incentives to encourage people to foster dogs
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter has continually been over capacity this year
and is launching a brand new foster incentive program to help more dogs
The goal is to place 50 dogs into month-long foster homes within a 5-day period
Dogs eligible for the foster incentive program are 1+ years old and weigh more than 35 pounds
Foster families who commit to a dog for four weeks or until the dog gets adopted will receive a $200 Visa gift card at the end of the foster period
“Every foster family that takes an animal from the shelter actually saves two lives,” says Jennifer Brause
“They save the life of that particular animal and also open up a kennel space for a new animal in need.”
BARCS will provide all the needed supplies including a leash
There are also two Dog Foster Coordinators and a Dog Foster Trainer available to assist families along the way
Visit BARCS located at 2490 Giles Road, Baltimore to pick out any eligible dog within the criteria for the program. We are open from 2-6 p.m. during the week and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on the weekends. A foster application can be filled out ahead of time here
BALTIMORE — The Baltimore man charged in an animal cruelty where 83 dogs were seized from his Central Park Heights home
now has to pay $12,000 in restitution to BARCS
Robert Conley was also sentenced to over 10 years
He's required to have no animals in his possession and consent to random visits by animal control
This stems from an incident that happened on May 23
when police arrived to the house because Conley didn't pay rent
RELATED: Man charged with animal cruelty after 83 dogs found in crates covered in urine
Charging documents say when they got in the house
there was a strong smell of ammonia and all the dogs were in crates compiled of urine and feces
All animals were taken from the home and evaluated by the BARCS Animal Shelter
83 dogs in all—-60 adults and nearly two dozen puppies
which had been listed for sale on a social media site at up to $1,500 apiece
was in better condition than many of the other animals in the house

On May 23, Baltimore City sheriff’s deputies helped animal enforcement officers execute a search-and-seizure warrant at a home on Pembridge Avenue near Spaulding Avenue and discovered 83 dogs and one cat in deplorable conditions.
Law enforcement took them for housing and medical care to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, or BARCS, which called the group “The Cakes.” They’ve since been adopted or sent to specialized rescues.
“This defendant demonstrated a complete disregard for the well-being of innocent creatures,” Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates said in a statement. “This plea and the substantial restitution ordered underscores our commitment to holding those who harm animals accountable.”
Bates said the prosecution would not have been possible without the “dedication and compassion” of the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office and Baltimore City Health Department
which includes the Office of Animal Control
He also commended Assistant State’s Attorneys Alison Rajk and Robert Schenker
“My office will continue to advocate for the protection and humane treatment of all animals by pursuing justice when acts of cruelty and neglect are committed,” Bates said
Baltimore City Sheriff Sam Cogen said his office “does not tolerate the abuse of animals” and was “proud to have been a part of bringing this unfortunate incident to light.”
Cogen also encouraged people to support BARCS

“They said the animal was hit by a car and she was paralyzed and she needed surgery,” recalled Reyes Ramos

it turns out Melody is still missing and BARCS wasn’t behind that call requesting thousands of dollars to save her life
“They have spoofed our phone number and they’re calling those people and asking for money through Cash App
“They’re claiming that they have their pets here at BARCS and that they’re under some kind of emergency.”
BARCS has identified six people targeted with the scam
and one of them paid the $2600 the con artist demanded
And it’s not just the pet owners who have something at stake here
and it’s now concerned that this might shake the confidence of those willing to donate
Reyes Ramos asked the right questions to tip her off that something was wrong
They said it was unethical to send pictures of an injured animal,” said Reyes Ramos

the uptick in cases over the last six to eight weeks has leveled off
but a few dozen sick dogs are still being quarantined for ongoing treatment at the shelter
and BARCS medical team is expected to make a decision on lifting or extending the temporary ban later this week
the need for volunteers has grown to help tend to the sick animals
especially ones who are willing to walk out sick dogs,” said Patterson
“We have them wear full PPEs so they have gowns
gloves and they’re changing that between each dog
because we are seeing so many different types of viruses.”
The shelter also is in need of people willing to foster animals
and it’s still encouraging those who wish to adopt an animal to come in and choose from those healthy ones
which have been kept separated from those which are ill

Three weeks after 83 dogs and one cat were seized from a rowhome in Northwest Baltimore, just two of the animals are still searching for a permanent home
according to officials from the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter
Funfetti is “a bit shy” but she’s got a “sweet and goofy personality,” according to the shelter’s adoption website
The shelter doesn’t list any information about Sponge Cake
but she’s in a foster home waiting to be adopted
“The pittie and the middle-aged tabby cat is kind of the story of BARCS,” said Bailey Deacon
“The little guys get scooped up immediately
And now it’s our job at the shelter to make sure the Sponge Cake and Funfetti find a home.”
Deacon said 47 dogs from the initial rescue had been adopted and 35
BARCS will often name groups of animals that come in at once as a group
These dogs were “the cakes,” each one referred to as Cake with a number
Baltimore City Sheriff Sam Cogen said his office was actively investigating the case
The animals were being kept in an unsafe and unhealthy environment
Some were covered in excrement and insects and the air quality where they were found was “dismal.”
BARCS established a veterinary triage to handle the influx
They had to hire contract veterinarians and vet techs to help
but that doesn’t mean the shelter isn’t overwhelmed
“There’s never a lazy day at BARCS,” she said
The shelter works with Baltimore City Office of Animal Control every day
she said — more than 50% of the animals that come into the shelter are through animal control
it is responsible for the care of every animal brought in by animal control in Baltimore
meaning BARCS accepts and cares for every single animal that winds up at its door — which can include medical costs
The average care cost for each dog that enters the shelter is $350
BARCS took in 5,303 dogs and 5,781 cats last year, according to its 2023 sheltering report.
And while the rescue of all of the Cakes was harrowing
Deacon said the wave of support that it brought to the shelter was powerful — and needed
signed up to volunteer and adopted animals
“That support is what keeps everybody going at BARCS
“Nobody at BARCS could do it without having that overwhelming positive support.”

Baltimore City Health Department Office of Animal Control and Baltimore City Sherriff’s Office executed an administrative warrant resulting in the seizure of 83 dogs and one cat
The dogs were found in a rowhome in Clyburn/Pimlico neighborhood and were of various ages
were being housed together in small crates stacked on top of one another
The dogs were kept in an unsafe and unhealthy environment
They were found covered in excrement and roaches
All 84 animals were brought directly to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter for housing and medical care
Now BARCS is requesting help from the Baltimore community
Every dog in this case requires medical care
And because these dogs are part of an active investigation with Animal Control
they are required to stay in our shelter until they are cleared to be adopted
We are in desperate need of help from our Baltimore community—and quickly.”
