the huge construction site of a BMW factory has led to the arrival of workers from Asia
or 'guests,' in the terminology of Viktor Orbán's government
the population is fired up by the ruling party's anti-immigrant rhetoric
a few dozen residents huddled together in the small
overheated council chamber of Berettyóújfalu
a town of 14,000 inhabitants in eastern Hungary
who called an urgent public meeting to discuss "the problem of the 150 Indian workers who turned up by surprise" in October in this typical rural Hungarian town
"That's already 1% of our population," said this 50-something with the look of a peaceful civil servant
anti-immigrant party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán – he promised: "It wasn't the town hall that brought in" these young men
Housed in a dilapidated former boarding school and a drab vacation village located by a pond
they are employed on the site of the future BMW electric car factory
"I have no problem with bringing in guest workers," said the mayor
the government has been letting in tens of thousands of Asian workers to fill the glaring labor shortage in his country
which is in full demographic decline and where unemployment is below 5%
"But I don't agree with having guest-worker hostels in our residential neighborhoods or next to our hospitals or schools," he said
deliberately using the government's terminology
which carefully avoids the word "immigrant" in favor of "guest."

Work on Hungary’s M4 motorway continues to progress
with its 29.5 km-long easternmost section under construction
Starting at the junction with the M35 motorway
the M4 will pass the town of Berettyóújfalu and the village of Nagykereki
before reaching the Hungarian-Romanian border
The M35 is also under construction and will run 68.8 km from the country’s second largest city
The entire section of road covered by the project is built on a new alignment and located in Hajdú-Bihar county
the new section of the M4 will be a paved dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction
a design speed of 130 km/h and a width of 26.6 m on river bridges along the route
Grade-separated junctions with three other roads – main road number 47 and two lower-class roads – are to be built as part of the section
near Berettyóújfalu) and one border crossing point (at Nagykereki) will also be set up
the latter can be turned into a service area
with a petrol station and high-capacity car and lorry park
Other ancillary facilities developed under the project include an axle-load weighing station
a motorway operation and maintenance centre
and a police station for both the M4 and the M35
These will be located around Berettyóújfalu
a state-of-the-art intelligent transport system will be installed to cover the entire section of road
It will encompass a traffic counting system
traffic information boards with digital displays and a video camera network
As the land on which the motorway is being built is flat
and given the high groundwater levels observed during the design and preparation phase
the extensive presence of inland waterways and poor natural drainage of precipitation
most of the road will on top of an embankment of at least 2 m high
a stable road base and resilience to the effects of climate change
the M4 will have a total length of 233 km
the ring road around Hungary’s capital
seat of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county
where it will include a junction with the M8 motorway
it will connect with Romania’s A3 motorway
which is planned to run for 603 km past a number of major cities
The project thus makes an important contribution to ensuring a modern and fast road transport link between the two capitals
Total investment for the project “M4 motorway between Berettyóújfalu and Nagykereki
with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 264 965 201 through the “Integrated Transport” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Network infrastructures in transport and energy”

Kalman Kovacs's love of learning was evident at a young age
he decided to begin using his middle name of Kalman
and declared to any questioning teacher that it was how he would henceforth be known
a tale Kalman liked to recount with mischievous delight
While his father cautioned him that a musical career could be a difficult path
and entered the Zoltan Kodaly Conservatory of Music in Debrecen at 14
He subsequently graduated from the Faculty of Music at the University of Debrecen
and by 22 he was teaching at a music school in Berettyoujfalu
who had launched a practice in Berettyoujfalu
They soon fell in love but decided not to marry as they were considering leaving Hungary; it was well known that the regime would not permit married couples to vacation outside the country
After obtaining one-month exit visas for separate destinations
Kalman and Judit left without even telling their families of their plans
Both qualified as refugees in Vienna and found work in their respective fields
but worried that Austria was still too close to the aggressive Soviet Union
Upon being accepted as immigrants to Canada
they married and flew to Edmonton in mid-1975
As their professional credentials were accorded no weight by the provincial regulatory bodies
Although teaching provided his primary income
Kalman never denied students who couldn't afford lessons
lessons were not always about music: "Sometimes
we just talked instead of me playing songs for him
I learned so much from him and consider myself very fortunate to have had him for my teacher." He was also a patient father
allowing his four children to make their own mistakes
Kalman began a second career in life insurance and financial planning in 1985
He eventually expanded his business to include investments and personal wealth management
an endeavour he managed with the same integrity
but summer invariably included a family vacation
whether camping in the wilds of British Columbia
Kalman also made time for the finer things in life; an oenophile with a notorious sweet tooth
he referred to wine and chocolate as the two essential food groups
When Kalman learned of his cancer diagnosis
he approached it with the same strength as he did other challenges
and continued to work and teach music as long as he could
Noting that he had no regrets about how he had lived his life
Kalman felt his Christian faith had prepared him for his final days
He said that while cancer had taken its toll on his body
he could feel his spirit growing stronger as the end approached

marking a significant addition to Hungary’s wellness destinations
officially earning the prestigious designation of a Hungarian thermal spa
According to the thermal resort’s official page

As HAON reports

The annual celebration features a variety of events
This year’s council meeting was particularly special
the Bihar Thermal Resort will bear the official title of a thermal spa
making it the newest Hungarian thermal spa

included the addition of a medical section
The local government secured new medical equipment through a fresh tender
