President Tamás Sulyok of Hungary spoke at a conference on child protection held by the Csongrád-Csanád County Government Office in Szeged, Hungary on Thursday, 24 April.
President Sulyok stressed that we can set no greater goal than to provide all children with a protective and inspiring environment that will give them a happy early life experience and help them become happy and well-adjusted adults. He went on to say that protecting children goes beyond national interests, and caring for children and protecting them from harm is the most basic human concern.
‘We need some words of encouragement, and we need strategies and methods developed by excellent professionals. But words, strategies, and methods are worth nothing if there are no good examples to follow,’ the President said.
Tamás Sulyok also called the work of the dedicated professionals, helpers, and employees of child protection a missing and indispensable element.

both Hungary and Poland have reported increased outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza affecting poultry flocks
multiple new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) linked to the H5N1 virus serotype have been recorded in Hungary and Poland
Across two of its southern counties — Bacs-Kiskun and Csongrad-Csanad — Hungary has confirmed a total of 20 new outbreaks in commercial poultry flocks. This is according to recent official notifications from the national veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)
All of these outbreaks started during the latter half of March
Apparently particularly susceptible to infections have been ducks and geese kept for foie-gras production
Five meat duck flocks have also tested positive for the virus
These bring the total outbreaks in Hungary since the autumn in Bacs-Kiskun to 195
There have been smaller numbers of outbreaks in poultry in 10 other Hungarian counties
Also registering with WOAH a recent spike in HPAI outbreaks in poultry over the past week has been Poland
Confirmation of 10 new outbreaks — also linked to the H5N1 virus variant — brings the nation’s total so far this year to 63
Almost all of the recent outbreaks have occurred in the central-western province of Greater Poland
Affected have been three farms with breeding ducks
As of March 31, Poland’s chief veterinary office puts the losses of commercial birds from mortality and culling so far in 2025 at just over 4.06 million.
14 countries have recorded a total of 167 HPAI outbreaks among commercial poultry flocks
This is according to the Animal Disease Information System from the European Commission (EC; as of March 26)
The System monitors listed animal diseases in European Union member states and adjacent countries
451 HPAI outbreaks in this population were reported to the EC by 20 countries during the whole of 2024
Recording the most outbreaks in this category in the year to date are Poland (59 outbreaks)
One earlier outbreak in the Netherlands has also been included in the EC System over this period
the H5N1 HPAI virus has been detected again in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt
affected in this central-eastern state was a farm with around 20,000 broiler parent birds
The EC System no longer monitors the disease situation in Great Britain
However, a spike in new outbreaks in poultry is also occurring across England. Seven more outbreaks in commercial flocks have been confirmed over the past week by the government agriculture department Defra
but also affected have been single flocks in the northwest
They bring this nation’s total outbreaks to date in 2025 to 37
Anticipating an increased threat of new cases, the agriculture ministry in France raised the nationwide HPAI risk to “moderate” in mid-March
This requires additional biosecurity measures to be put in place around poultry farms and backyard flocks.
the EC System had logged 58 HPAI outbreaks in captive birds in 15 European countries in 2025
Highest totals have been confirmed by Germany and Poland
each with 13 outbreaks in this category for the year to date
the regional total was 142 across 17 different states
one flock of captive birds or non-commercial poultry have been added to the EC System by each of the Czech Republic (Czechia) and Poland
it has also been reported to WOAH that a flock of 82 pheasants in Northern Ireland tested positive for the H5N1 virus variant in early February
29 countries had logged a total of 451 HPAI outbreaks among their respective wild bird populations with the EC (as of March 26)
the great majority involved the H5N1 virus variant
including 30 more cases in nine countries over the previous week
one further case tested positive for the H5N5 variant in Iceland
It brings the nation’s total so far this year to 21
the outbreak total among wild birds was 926 outbreaks in 32 states

Using horses to get around was a critical juncture for development of human society
Human skeletons found in 4,500-5,000-year-old burial mounds in Romania
Hungary and Serbia show the six distinct signs that the people were horse riders
Using horses was a critical juncture for development of human society
belonged to the Yamnayan culture – migrants from the Pontic-Caspian steppes which stretch across from what is now Romania
Moldova and Ukraine in the west to western Kazakhstan and the lower Volga regions of Russia in the east
The latest discovery suggest they may have tended to their livestock on horseback
“Horseback-riding seems to have evolved not long after the presumed domestication of horses in the western Eurasian steppes during the fourth millennium BCE,” says Volker Heyd
University of Helsinki archaeology professor and member of the international team which made the discovery
“It was already rather common in members of the Yamnaya culture between 3000 and 2500 BCE.”
The regions west of the Black Sea where the Yamnaya burial mounds were found were areas where the mobile herdspeople first encountered the settled farmer communities which occupied the areas in the late Stone Age (Neolithic) and Copper Age (Calcolithic)
The early Bronze Age expansion of steppe peoples into southeastern Europe was thought to be a violent invasion
“Our research is now beginning to provide a more nuanced picture of their interactions,” explains University of Helsinki postdoctoral researcher Bianca Preda-Bălănică
findings of physical violence as were expected are practically non-existent in the skeletal record so far
We also start understanding the complex exchange processes in material culture and burial customs between newcomers and locals in the 200 years after their first contact.”
Current research into the advent of horse riding has mostly focused on the horses themselves
But using horses for transport had a big impact on human society
With increased mobility came changes to land use
It also has an impact on the individual human riders as well
“We studied over 217 skeletons from 39 sites of which about 150 found in the burial mounds belong to the Yamnayans,” says postdoc Martin Trautmann
“Diagnosing activity patterns in human skeletons is not unambiguous
There are no singular traits that indicate a certain occupation or behaviour
provides reliable insights to understand habitual activities of the past.”
The six indicators of “horsemanship syndrome” used in the study are:
at least 24 were classified as “possible riders”
while five Yamnaya and two later as well as two possibly earlier individuals qualify as “highly probable riders”
“The rather high prevalence of these traits in the skeleton record
especially with respect to the overall limited completeness
show that these people were horse riding regularly”
But it’s possible horse riding goes back even further
“We have one intriguing burial in the series” says David Anthony, emeritus Professor of Hartwick College USA
“A grave dated about 4300 BCE at Csongrad-Kettöshalom in Hungary
long suspected from its pose and artifacts to have been an immigrant from the steppes
surprisingly showed four of the six riding pathologies
possibly indicating riding a millennium earlier than Yamnaya
An isolated case cannot support a firm conclusion
but in Neolithic cemeteries of this era in the steppes
horse remains were occasionally placed in human graves with those of cattle and sheep
and stone maces were carved into the shape of horse heads
we need to apply this method to even older collections.”

Hungarian sculptor Istvan Mate finishes up work on his statue of late U.S
President Ronald Reagan in his workshop in the town of Csongrad
On Wednesday, Budapest, Hungary will unveil a second statue of Ronald Reagan, the nation's 40th president. As the AP reports

Less than five years after erecting a bust of America's 40th president in a park
Hungary's capital is honoring Reagan with a full statue in Freedom Square
just a couple blocks from parliament and home to the U.S
making it seem as if he's is taking a walk in the square
The unveiling is just one event in a series of events in Europe this week that celebrate Reagan's 100th birthday. USA Today reports that yesterday the archbishop of Krakow in Poland said a Mass of thanksgiving; today
a special session of Hungary's parliament will honor the president; on Thursday Prague will rename a street in his honor and on July 4
London will unveil a statue of Reagan at Grosvenor Square

President Ronald Reagan Sunday in his workshop in the town of Csongrad
President Ronald Reagan was unveiled Wednesday in Hungary’s capital
where he was honored for his leadership in helping to end communism
The bronze 2-meter (7-foot) likeness of the 40th president was erected in Budapest at Freedom Square
Embassy and a World War II memorial to Soviet soldiers killed during the ouster of the Nazis from Hungary
Prime Minister Viktor Orban and former U.S
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice helped unveil the statue Wednesday
Reagan was remembered for the aid and encouragement he gave Hungary and other former Soviet satellite states in Eastern Europe to gain back their freedom
Reagan “changed the world and created a new world for Central Europe,” Orban said at the unveiling ceremony
“He tore down the walls which were erected in the path of freedom in the name of distorted and sick ideologies.”
Rice said the cause of the freedom fighters in Hungary’s failed anti-Soviet revolution in 1956 deepened Reagan’s commitment to ending communist rule around the world
“The men and women of ’56 inspired Americans and all free peoples never again to leave those alone who are struggling for their freedom,” Rice said
“And they inspired most of all Ronald Reagan.”
A large facsimile of Reagan’s signature identifies the statue made by Istvan Mate and a touchscreen monitor nearby provides information about Reagan in Hungarian and English
“The statue is imposing and the touchscreen is a lot of a fun,” said Reka Nemeth
a Hungarian teenager visiting the site after the ceremony
is the second memorial erected in his honor in Budapest
where a bust of the former actor and governor of California was placed in City Park in 2006
Hungary’s postal service also issued a commemorative envelope and postmark celebrating the centenary of Reagan’s birth
“We Hungarians have nothing to do with Reagan,” the Hungarian Communist Workers Party said in a statement
he served not our interests but those of ’American Big Capital’ bent on ruling the world.”
“It’s better to have two Ronald Reagan statues than none at all,” said Marton Baranyi

Fourteen people have been indicted for alleged drug trafficking in Szeged
a spokesperson for the Csongrád-Csanád County Chief Prosecutor’s office informed the Hungarian state news agency MTI on Friday
The spokesperson also shared that of the 14 suspects
seven were selling illegal substances as part of an organized crime group
Some of the suspects are facing additional charges as well
the leader of the criminal group had been selling drugs to a wide range of consumers in Szeged since 2018
he controlled and coordinated the activities of six other associates involved in the trade
The members of the group took a number of precautions to conceal their activities so that their consumers could place their orders using a predefined code system
The traffickers would then package the various types of drugs ordered in bags of French fries or hamburger boxes and deliver them disguised as food delivery men
The guilt of the perpetrators will be decided by the Szeged District Court
some of whom are facing sentences up to life imprisonment
The local police reported the arrest of several members of the group back in February 2023
when investigators seized more than 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of drugs
In addition to traditional drugs such as marijuana
the police also found various resin and oil-like substances
which are other end products of cannabis processing

It's not just Hungary’s largest lake that offers great opportunities for an outdoor holiday
we present seven beautifully situated riverside beaches and swimming lakes that
offer a different kind of beach experience
Many say that nowhere is the Tisza river bank as beautiful as where the River Körös flows into it near Csongrád
greenish Körös slowing down the fast-flowing Tisza
which by depositing its sediment created the famous 700-metre-long sandy bank
sandbanks appear making the beach look like the seaside
The riverside beach (‘Körös-torok Partfürdő’) is Csongrád's main summer attraction
young children swimming in the shallow water
and young people playing volleyball and football
It has everything you need for relaxation or a fun holiday: snack bars
with the daytime hustle and bustle replaced by club music
the Körös Torok is the venue for one of the biggest popular music events in the Southern Great Plain
Gyomaendrőd is uniquely surrounded by a number of backwaters – there are sixteen in the outskirts of the town
which are popular with the Hungarian fishing community
The stretches of backwater are also ideal for those who long for a bit of retreat and spend a few days on the water in a wild and unspoilt environment
The open beach on the north-western shore of the Templom-zugi backwater
on the Gyomaendrőd section of the Hármas-Körös
has retained its natural setting and bird-filled tranquillity
so if you prefer to avoid the crowds and the noise
let's visit the Erzsébet grove in Gyomaendrőd
the five-hectare grove was expanded with an interactive canopy trail
It's also worth climbing up to the fifteen-metre-high wooden lookout tower
When the water temperature of the Danube is suitable for bathing
many people choose the beautifully landscaped open-air beach for a splash
The beach is a safe choice for small children
with its one hundred and fifty metres of fine sandy beach and slowly deepening waters
There is plenty of shade to escape the summer heat
This stretch of beach has been officially open for swimming since 2009
the water sample is always excellent for swimming and the sand is always prepared on the beach for the big rush before the beach season
And it's not just sunbathing and swimming that you can pass the time with here: the beach has a playground
and a bakery and restaurant are just a short walk away
The good news for dog lovers is that a special beach has been set aside for them so that dogs can also have a chance to cool off
Tip: The town of Visegrád is not far from here where you can visit the Solomon Tower
you can also visit the King Matthias Historical Playground and the Mogyoró Hill Wildlife Park
Everyone should try open water bathing once in a while
offers two great alternatives: the Lower and Upper Göd open beaches
which are also accessible from Budapest by bike
a slowly deepening sandy beach where you can rent a canoe and even bathe with your dog
where you can swim and bathe to your heart’s delight far from civilisation
The Lake Szelid in Bács-Kiskun county with its grassy shore and sandy beach reminds us of the most beautiful beaches of Lake Balaton
with a water surface area of approximately eighty hectares
making it the fifth largest natural lake in Hungary
and it was deepened thousands of years ago by the Danube
Its water is excellent for bathing and even has healing properties
It has not yet been classified as medicinal water
but the sodium magnesium carbonate and sodium iodide released from the soil are beneficial for nervous
The beach offers children more than just a swim
with other activities such as a giant water slide
the village on the Hungarian-Croatian border
the three hundred and twenty-hectare Kotró
which is not only a favourite destination for anglers
but also for divers because of its crystal clear waters – visibility underwater can reach up to eight metres – and its open beach
where you can also enjoy all kinds of water activities. The shore of the lake of Gyékényes is dotted with small cottages
an ideal destination for those who want to enjoy idyllic nature
This popular recreation and fishing spot was awarded the title of ’Our Heritage – Treasure of Somogy’ in 2011
The area is part of the Danube-Drava National Park
where there are plenty of other natural treasures
Tip: At Kotró Lake you can play beach volleyball
festivals and diving cups are also held here
the lake hosts have sunk several cleaned wrecks in the water
The area around Bakonybél and Lake Hubertlak is probably familiar to many hikers
but in summer it is worth heading a little further west
as the reservoir of Nagytevel is a few kilometres away
which is artificially inflated from the waters of the Pápai-Bakony brook
but in summer it is also a great place for a relaxing beach holiday
The water is not only at a pleasant temperature but also crystal clear
After hiking in the area you can relax on the shore of the Lake
on the north-western part of which you’ll find a well-equipped beach with a refreshment bar
thirsty visitors will find the ‘Ida Spring’ with its fresh
cool water and a statue of the Holy Mary with a nice resting place

The University of Szeged is participating in a national screening study which involves tens of thousands of people
The series of studies aims to get an accurate picture of the extent of the epidemic and the actual number of people infected and re-infected with the coronavirus
Staff from the University collected 16.4 percent of the total national samples from Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok
A total of 17,778 people over 14 years old from various age groups
selected with the assistance of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH)
will be invited to participate in the national screening
16.4 percent of the samples are collected by the staff of the University of Szeged from Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok
The Albert Szent-Györgyi Health Center of the University of Szeged will be conducting the examinations
The screening process will take 14 days to complete and involves 15 working groups from the University of Szeged
a sample from nasal and pharyngeal swabs is taken
which is necessary to determine the PCR test
which will help us to analyze other epidemiological aspects as well’ said Prof
President of the Szent-Györgyi Albert Clinical Center of the University of Szeged
He added that the success of the study is not only in the interest of the screened individuals
but also in the national interest as these studies help us to assess the current epidemiological situation and how to further implement control measures
the national level will be conducted by the four Hungarian medical training institutions under the leadership of Semmelweis University and with the support of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology
A national clinical epidemiological study is being prepared and will be based on the following; actual number of currently infected people in Hungary
how many people have become ill and immune to the virus so far
and how many may be asymptomatic virus carriers
The results of the nationwide testing are expected to be released in mid-May
Anyone who participates in the study will be notified of their results without exception

Sűrű köd ereszkedett hétfő délelőtt a szerb határtól pár kilométerre fekvő Ásotthalomra
háromfokos időben dolga végeztével mindenki sietve pattant a kerékpárjára
a Hatvannégy Vármegye Ifjúsági Mozgalom (HVIM) tiszteletbeli elnöke
akkor szerintük ezen most nem érdemes fennakadni
tettrekészsége elindít valamit itt" - mondta a férfi
A változást minden megkérdezett helyi sürgeti
A csomagosztásról több helyit is megkérdeztünk
mint ahogy Toroczkai szerint sem történt ilyesmi
Télapó-csomagot viszont összeállított: a környékbeli vállalkozóktól szerezte be a hozzávalókat
Szerintem akkor is én nyertem volna" - mondta
a Hatvannégy Vármegye Ifjúsági Mozgalom tiszteletbeli elnöki posztjáról viszont lemond

Even though September and October were dry and mild
it seems winter arrived earlier in Hungary this year than meteorologists forecast
The edge of a Mediterranean cyclone reached Hungary last night and this morning
Some regions will see that in the form of snow
According to HungaroMet
the cyclone’s edge that was formed above Germany and Austria arrived with strong winds
they forecast windy and cloudy weather with lots of precipitation
They added that mainly in the northern and northeastern parts of the country
The biggest amount of snow is expected in the Mátra and Bükk mountains
while rain and sleet dominated the Kisalföld region and the southern counties
