The following is an adapted version of an article written by Barnabás Leimeiszter
originally published in Magyar Krónika
In the suburbs of Gödöllő lives a former Viet Cong partisan girl
who spent three years in the jungle and then walked the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the middle of the rainy season
she settled and started a family in Hungary
and today she is trying to spread indigenous Hungarian chicken breeds in her homeland
The Vietnamese people’s stubborn insistence on independence is nothing new
Historical events such as long battles with China and the successful repulsion of Genghis Khan’s invasion attempts have shaped Vietnamese identity
This millennia-old desire for national independence was also at work when Vietnamese people tried to shake off the colonial yoke in the 20th century; the rejection of the Western powers played a decisive role in the increasingly communist character of their movement
doing nothing more than continuing the family tradition
She is from an intellectual background: her grandfather was a Mandarin
and her parents were illegal revolutionaries who fought first against French colonial rule
then against the South Vietnamese leadership
which relied on American military presence
Xuan was born in the jungle shortly before the French gave up the war in Indochina
studying in a French school and regularly visiting her parents
‘No wonder I didn’t like Americans,’ she says with a smile
she decided to join the Viet Cong fighters
She received military training and learned to shoot but ultimately did not participate in guerrilla fighting: her parents feared for her and
thanks to their connections in the intellectual circles
managed to find her a relatively secure job in the hinterland
In the late 1960s the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam was created to promote the international recognition of the Viet Cong
who made his name as a composer of patriotic songs and a researcher of folk songs
was appointed Minister of Information and Culture
The office was based in a self-sufficient camp near Tây Ninh in the jungle on the Cambodian border
it had a wide range of duties: as an intelligence and administration centre
and also ensured that the texts of Viet Cong novelists were sent north—much of Xuan’s work was
‘They were very careful about the safety of the minister and his staff
hence our camp was informed well in advance of the movement of American troops and the approaching B-52 bombers
so I saw little fighting: by the time the Americans had landed
and only luck saved my life,’ Xuan remembers
we did our share of the work needed to maintain the camp: digging bunkers
I was called back to the office to type up a text
Those who went on were bombed a little further on
Xuan was sent to study in North Vietnam in 1971
The journey took her along the famous Ho Chi Minh Trail
which proved to be the toughest part of her partisan life: she contracted malaria
marched uphill with a fever of 40 degrees for three months
Not to mention the repeated US bombings—Xuan was again lucky
as she was at the front of the several small groups marching after one another
and hers was not directly attacked; however
The Vietnam War ended with the victory of the communist North in 1975
She was one of those chosen by the regime to form a new elite thus sent to study at Eastern Bloc universities
where she thought the universities were of the highest quality
but she had no more choice about where she would study than about what she would major in
the Vietnamese Independence Day,’ she says
Hungary was the most liberal state of the socialist bloc’
One of the things the Vietnamese state needed was agricultural engineers
so Xuan went to the University of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Gödöllő and lived the ordinary life of the youth
fearing that many students would remain abroad
they strictly forbade the students to develop close relations with Hungarians; and the more ambitious Vietnamese students were happy to report the others’ budding romances to those back home
Getting to know each other was not the easiest
as they were not allowed to be seen on the street together and had to arrange for other friends to join them on each date
their Hungarian classmates covered for them as best they could
Hungarians are not racist,’ Xuan stresses when I ask her about the reception of Vietnamese students in Hungary in the 1970s
and in the more than four decades she spent here
have the hard-working Vietnamese who now live in Hungary in significant numbers been subjected to atrocities
Xuan also says that if she hadn’t come here
she might have had a very different career
but also a very different view of the world
Hungary was the most liberal state of the socialist bloc: the way Hofi
made fun of the government was a sharp contrast to what I had experienced before
This relatively permissive atmosphere has also had an effect on us
We began to think more freely than those who were sent to other socialist countries
and this was clearly evident when we met them.‘ Of course
was already used to a more relaxed lifestyle than people in the north of the country
‘The north is synonymous with the ancient Vietnamese spirit: mountainous
The determination and iron discipline of the people there were probably essential to winning the war
but the cultural differences between the two parts of the country are still evident today.’
Whether the plane lands in Hungary or in Vietnam
Xuan also holds a PhD and has worked as a poultry scientist at the university in Gödöllő
with a long list of scientific publications to her credit
and not just to visit her elderly mother in Saigon; she also has to carry out official duties
Since 1996 there has been close scientific cooperation between the two countries
and Xuan is a senior researcher at the Association of Hungarian Small Animal Breeders for Gene Conservation
where she is investigating how to translocate indigenous Hungarian chicken breeds to tropical environments
The association has also been present in Szeklerland since 2014 through the Gene Ring gene rescue programme
so Xuan also travels a lot to Transylvania
Transylvanian hens are highly adaptable: they can tolerate temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius
‘Whenever we are in Szeklerland and the Szekler anthem is sung
but it’s natural for me,’ Xuan laughs

Experience more of Hungary on these wonderful day trips from Budapest
You get a lot of bang for your buck when you visit beautiful Budapest – architecturally wonderful Buda and fun-filled Pest – but there are even more delights beyond the city limits
These day trips from Budapest are easy by bus
or even boat – pack your walking shoes and start exploring
Northeast of Budapest, Eger Castle is legendary as the bastion that held out against the Turkish invasion, but the relics of the town's eventual Ottoman conquest, including a 40m-high (131ft) minaret and Turkish baths
Apart from the legacy of the siege, Eger is known for its wine – most notably "Bull’s Blood," believed by the Turks to have given the Hungarians superhuman power in battle
you can try Eger wines straight from the barrel in the Valley of Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy Hétvége) on the outskirts of town
where wine cellars are carved into the bedrock of the surrounding hills
If you have time, pay a visit to the city’s historic Lyceum, with its wood-clad baroque Archdiocesan Library and its Great Tower
housing an astronomy museum filled with vintage instruments as well as a camera obscura overlooking the city
How to get to Eger from Budapest: It takes 1½ hours to reach Eger from Budapest by car
trains run from Budapest's Budapest-Keleti station to Eger station
As you stroll along Szentendre’s cobbled streets, with the 18th-century tower of Blagoveštenska Church peering above the wine-red and sunset-yellow colored houses
you'll immediately understand why this handsome country town is the most popular day trip destination from Budapest
but aim to avoid weekends in high summer when the town can get really busy
which traces the development of winemaking in Hungary from its earliest days and offers a wine tour with tastings
How to get to Szentendre from Budapest: Szentendre is about a 40-minute drive north of Budapest, but it's just as fast to come by train. The H5 HÉV suburban train line runs here from Batthyány tér station in the center of Budapest. In summer months, boat services also run up the Danube to Szentendre
Once the summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef and his wife Elizabeth, Gödöllő Royal Palace carries all the hallmarks of Habsburg extravagance
accented with flecks of gold on the facade
houses a network of rooms decked out with upholstered silk in burgundy
How to get to Gödöllő from Budapest: Gödöllő lies east of Budapest
take a direct train (40 minutes) from Budapest’s Budapest-Keleti station in the east of the city
Esztergom is Hungary’s most sacred city. The town’s enormous basilica
rising high above the town and the Danube River
appearing unexpectedly in a stretch of green countryside
You might have to pinch yourself to be sure you're not imagining it
Esztergom has a handful of great cafes – try the dramatic courtyard at Padlizsán or inventive Prímás Pince
The town also boasts a dusting of good hotels and campsites
How to get to Esztergom from Budapest: Esztergom is located northwest of Budapest
It takes about an hour to arrive by car and 1 hour 20 minutes on the direct trains from Budapest-Nyugati station
In summer, Lake Balaton (the largest lake in central Europe) is the go-to destination for locals seeking a break from the city hustle
The elegant and historic resort town of Balatonfüred is an ideal taster for lake life
just a couple of hours' train ride away from the capital
The town was once frequented by artists, writers and scientists – you’ll find the names of illustrious past visitors inscribed on the placards embedded into the wall of the Pantheon. It overlooks Gyógy tér
a leafy square with a natural spring at its center
Balatonfüred remains a very popular resort
which meanders past yachts docked in the small marina with hazy views over to the Tihany peninsula in the distance
Make sure you take a boat trip around the lake from the jetty for the best views
How to get to Balatonfüred from Budapest: Balatonfüred is southwest of Budapest
some direct trains run from Kelenföld Railway Station in the south of Budapest to Balatonfüred in around two hours or go to Lepsény (one hour)
where you can catch a direct bus to Balatonfüred (one hour)
Visegrád is a small town on the Danube Bend famous for its big views. An intense hike on a rocky woodland trail will take you up to the 13th-century citadel above town for dizzying views over this scenic kink in the Danube River
you can also take the City-Bus taxi service from the ferry pier up to the castle
Down in Visegrád town, go for a ramble around the romantic ruins of the handsome Renaissance palace
learn about how Hungary’s famous pálinka (fruit brandy) is made – and how it tastes – in Visegrád’s small pálinka museum
Germany sliced down their giant pool of homegrown talent into a list of 35 names that are still fighting for a place on that final 23-man World Games roster
They were finally able to whittle it down to 35 men after an extensive training process that included many sessions across Europe and North America
The process took Germany as far as New England for trials
including practice sessions in Gillette Stadium
They spent a week in the Boston area competing and working with an array of NCAA Division 1
The list will have to be narrowed down to 28 in the coming months
no easy task when it comes to a group so well prepared

hungarian graphic designers david remsey + zoltan turney have collaborated to create ‘scenario – baroque space installations’ located at the park of royal palace in godollo
ten panels measuring 1.2 meters wide and 2.5 meters high are arranged to create a modified baroque theatrical staging on the palace’s grounds
light printed canvases produced with graphic design instruments form the outdoor installation amidst a grove of fir trees
each artist generated five unique panels positioned in two clusters which support a parallel theatrical theme
installation located on the palace grounds
zoltan turnys five panel series evokes a mythological compilation of images forming a dream sequence
symbols incorporate baroque patterns and display an allegorical snake forging through the exhibit
birds and zodiac objects float overhead representing a convergence of earth and sky

The government will provide 4.6 billion HUF for the construction plans of the connection between Metro line 2 and the suburban railway line to Gödöllő on Örs vezér Square
beyond modernising the suburban line – announced Gergely Gulyás
The minister noted that the government's decision creates a real possibility for the investment to be completed within the 2021–2027 EU financial cycle

Gergely Gulyás said that despite many disagreements
Budapest and the government have been forced to collaborate
The reason behind the disagreements is that the government believes Budapest's development has stalled in many areas where the capital’s council has significant influence
worse traffic jams and more homeless people on the streets of Budapest," he explained
the Minister emphasized that there are areas where they are forced to co-operate to develop Budapest
One of the most important of these is the development of public transport in the city

Gergely Gulyás said that this is why the government has decided to support the connection of the suburban railway line to Gödöllő and metro line 2
An agreement was reached between the government and the city council In the Budapest Public Development Council
following which the Budapest Development Centre will take over the planning and preparation of the renovation of the suburban railway lines to Gödöllő and Csömör
and connecting the tracks of the suburban railway with metro line 2
the Budapest city council halted the preparation of the investment in the autumn of 2019
The Public Development Council agreed that the government would take over the project in October 2020

said that the government's decision brought the realisation of the most important transportation development in eastern Pest into sight
The government's decision to provide the funds is expected to be published on Tuesday or Wednesday
“We have a year and a half of wasted time behind us,” said the MP
noting that the project began with the Budapest City Council but ground to a halt in 2019
The new government decision pushes the 10–15 year development plan one step further along

He also mentioned that the plans for the entire route would be completed by 2023
but construction plans for the first phase up to Cincota could be completed by the beginning of 2022
The complex suburban transportation development includes connecting the metro and the suburban railway line
the complete reconstruction of the affected suburban railway lines
and rebuilding a certain section underground
Mr Szatmáry said that the railway and metro would be connected on the surface as originally planned
Gergely Gulyás said that the developments are estimated to cost more than 200 billion

We told you about Germany’s lengthy preparations to build the best squad possible for the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships that took them all the way to the Patriots of the NFL’s Gillette Stadium and beyond
but there was still a ways to go before the coaching staff could agree on the final roster
Germany is now ready to show the world the list of 23 athletes
that will attempt to make their first run into the Blue Division
(Check out the FULL list of FIL rosters HERE.)
Germany placed 9th in Denver’s 2014 World Games and as high as 6th (1998, 2010) in previous competitions. Is this there year to climb to the top of Europe, and maybe even the world? We will know soon enough and you can be there to witness it in person
The planning for the renovation of the Gödöllő and Csömör suburban railway lines and their connection with metro line 2 will resume
The work started earlier by the Budapest City Council
and then stopped in early 2020 now continues by a consortium of the Budapest Development Centre (BFK) and MÁV-HÉV Zrt
The government has already decided on the continuation of the work
now the support contract has been signed - Budapest Development Centre (BFK) announces.
The entire suburban railway line in Gödöllő and Csömör will be renovated
new accessible stops will be established (Source: Budapest Development Centre)
The largest part of the investment is the complete renovation of the suburban railway line in Gödöllő and Csömör
during which the track will be modernised and car passages crossing the suburban railway line will be eliminated
Taking into account the changes in the settlement structure
the location of the stops will also change: they will be placed where a significant number of people live or where it will be possible to transfer to the railway
and more P + Rs and so-called B + R (bike and ride) parks will be built
a transfer-free connection to Metro 2 would also be established
That is planned to be solved by the metro driving up an ascent in front of today's Örs Vezér Square terminus
which leads over the Kerepesi and Nagy Lajos Király Road
and would reach the new Örs Vezér Square stop above the current suburban railway terminal
The suburban railway line would be connected to the metro above the surface (Source: Budapest Development Centre)
every second of the trains of Metro 2 would go to Rákosfalva
every second of those would go further to Cinkota
and every second of those would go to Gödöllő and Csömör
The transfer-free connection can take place in 6-7 years
The development can be realised in 6-7 years (Source: Budapest Development Centre)
certain bus terminals will be moved from Örs Vezér Square
which will allow buses to take up less space in the square
and the area of the Zugló terminus will be landscaped
That will also be planned by Budapest Development Centre (BFK)

The real Ravka - Where was Shadow and Bone filmed
Hungary is home to a wide range of productions
from big Hollywood films to smaller-budget European arthouse movies
so there isn’t a time of year when you don’t have the chance to bump into a celebrity during a stroll around town
“Shadow and Bone” series has recently debuted on Netflix
It was filmed in Hungary and is clearly Netflix’s biggest hit so far in this year
The first season of “Shadow and Bone” takes place across three fictional countries
but all feel like distinctly different settings
The vast bulk of filming took place in historical sites in Budapest
Hungary’s capital and its surrounding areas
with the production lasting from October 2019 until March 2020 – just before pandemic restrictions first came into practice
They filmed major parts at ORIGO Studios in Budapest, which is one of the biggest film studios in Europe, known for hosting big-budget productions such as “Blade Runner 2049” and “Atomic Blonde”
Now let’s get started to explore the main locations
“Shadow and Bone’s” Keramzin orphanage scenes were filmed at Amadé Bajzáth-Pappenheim Castle in Iszkaszentgyörgy
In the series this was the place where Alina and Mal grew up and hid in the grass to avoid the Grisha assessment
The audience with the King of Ravka at the Grand Palace (the ugliest building ever
was filmed at the big hall of the Ethnographic Museum of Budapest
We can see the Budapest Royal Palace courtyard in exterior shots
and its halls were used in certain scenes as well
This was where Alina was presented by Kirigan to the Tsar and Tsarina as the Sun Seer
and it was here where the writer Leigh Bardugo made her cameo
A Ravkan symbol is added to the marble floor
Several scenes were filmed at the iconic Buda Castle
Perhaps this is one of the most identifiable location in the series
because it is indeed known by many and appears in its full glory without alterations
the Dregs are looking for the blueprints of the Little Palace to steal them after crossing the Fold
Kaz disguises himself as a sculptor and uses this as a pretext to get the details of the gates from the archives
which are later broken into by Inej and Jesper
Medieval Buda Castle is also the palace courtyard for the travelling fair in Episode 5
It’s all part of the Winter Fete – the Ravkan citizens’ celebrations
while the King and Queen of Ravka’s ball takes place at the Little Palace at General Kirigan’s behest
the interior of the Royal archives was filmed in another very popular filming location in Budapest
The old Budapest Stock Exchange Palace in Liberty Square (also known as the MTV building) is a monumental complex that has been empty since 2009
It served as the abandoned casino in Las Vegas in “Blade Runner 2049”
The Little Palace in Os Alta is the headquarters of Ravka’s Second Army
composed entirely of Grisha – with a few CGI turrets added to the palace’s own elegant architecture
Many sections of the palace were featured in the series, including the library, the corridors, and the staircase with oak paneling. The room in episode five where the demonstration takes place is the concert hall. The Festetics Palace was also used as a filming location in the 2018 movie “Red Sparrow”
The Grishas’ Little Palace is first seen when General Kirigan brings Alina there after the incident on the Shadow Fold
This place is also used when General Kirigan leads Alina to her new residence
We see the rooms and corridors again when Genya prepares her to meet the King and Queen of Ravka
The wood-paneled staircase the Grishas descend is also part of the same Little Palace filming location
General Kirigan’s room is also found at Festetics Palace
has called General Kirigan’s war room his favorite Little Palace filming location
with the room’s dramatic decor matching the character perfectly
Grassalkovich Palace provided the Little Palace’s stables
Jesper finds the groom he flirted with earlier at this place
The church sequence where Inej defeats Pavel was also filmed in the Royal Palace of Gödöllő’s Baroque Chapel
The village in ruins north of Chernast from episode four
was filmed at the Szentendre Skanzen Village Museum
the windmill and the houses were CGI’d in post-production to reflect the destruction of the conflict
when General Kirigan sends Mal and a band of First Army troops north of Chernast
And this was where Kirigan’s carriage stops during Alina’s research
Fantasy fans might have recognized the windmill from another series (though “Shadow and Bone” has given it a make-under to provide war damage). “The Witcher” and “Shadow and Bone” share the same studio
but their distinct aesthetics mean there’s not many overlaps in filming locations

When Andrea Vigh sits down at her trusty harp at 7pm this evening to open the International Harp Festival for the 20th time of asking
as the applause slowly ripples away in the splendour of the gala hall of the Royal Palace in Gödöllő
she might well reflect on the enormity of her achievement
It was back in 1999 that accomplished harpist Vigh first mooted the idea of a festival focused on this most elegant of instruments
the piano was my first instrument,” begins Vigh
“When I was at music school I switched to the harp
At the time there was no tuition across Hungary at elementary level
That was why relatively few youngsters here were choosing to take it up.”
In order to rectify this problem, to promote the instrument she loved, to bring world stars to Hungary and to take advantage of the complete renovation of the Gödöllő Royal Palace, Vigh hit upon the idea of setting up a festival that focused on purely on the harp. Having already played sold-out solo shows at Budapest’s Franz Liszt Music Academy
What she needed was a name to establish the event on the international stage
I’m eternally grateful to Marielle Nordmann for accepting our invitation to appear at the inaugural festival,” says Vigh.“It set the tone and the standard for all festivals to come.” The famous French harpist
also performed for Hungarian audiences in 2001
2008 and 2013 as the festival gained its global reputation
Another returning guest has been elite Czech harpist Jana Boušková
Boušková will be joining Andrea Vigh and the Budapest Strings Chamber Orchestra for the gala night at the Liszt Music Academy on 14 October to bring the festival to a close
Boušková is also the face of Lyon & Healy
the world-famous harp makers based in Chicago
October’s annual festival provides manufacturers with a showcase to present their wares – harps come in various shapes
The famed concert grand is only produced in limited numbers
“For all the stars who have appeared here every year,” says Vigh
“I’m equally proud of the fact that the harp is now taught in Hungary at elementary level
and more and more young musicians are coming through”
the Fiatal tehetségek hárfakoncertje offers the stage to these talented youngsters
it is the turn of beginners to shine at the Kezdő Hárfások Tücsökfesztiválja
Mention should also be made of Ben Creighton Griffiths and Gyula Fekete
who has performed at harp festivals in Rio
takes the stage for the Concert for Harp Ensembles in the afternoon and a solo show in the evening
And for the gala night at the Music Academy

Liszt Music Academy District VI
HÉV 5: Batthyány tér/Margit híd-Szentendre
Crossing the M2 red metro line at Batthyány tér and the number 4-6 tram line on the Buda side of Margaret Bridge
this most frequented of HÉV trains echoes the earliest days of suburban expansion
this line even predates the HÉV acronym – the Budapest Railway Railroad Company (BKVT) responsible for these rapidly needed surburban routes
unable to find agreement with its horse-drawn counterpart
Today this busy train scoots up to Szentendre in 40 minutes
Batthyány tér a blur of transit-changing commuters during rush hour
Services otherwise run at more leisurely 20-minute intervals
allowing sightseers to enjoy the visual companionship of the passing Danube before exploring the cobblestoned streets and Serbian churches of Szentendre
Sziget visitors pack the carriages to Filatorigát by the music festival site
the scheduled 4:30am train back to Budapest awash with post-party flotsam rubbing shoulders with bleary shift-workers
the HÉV train to Ráckeve runs for a full 40 kilometers before it reaches its final destination
a former Serbian settlement that straddles a bucolic branch of the Danube
fishermen gather on lazy riverbanks and gaggles of rowers glide by
a world away from the HÉV terminus in town
beside a busy traffic hub in south Pest facing the millennial arts complex
Közvágóhíd is also the end station for Budapest’s celebrated number 2 tram that serves the Pest embankment
The HÉV keeps parallel watch on Csepel Island as it heads south on the Pest side
passing the city limits after Millenniumtelep and over the M0 orbital motorway
first settled by the original Hungarian tribe and named after the horse groom of their leader
Once you reach Ráckeve, all is explained at the modest Árpád Museum (closed Mondays) at Kossuth Lajos utca 34. Other attractions include a clutch of Serbian Orthodox churches, the Baroque Savoy Castle of military hero Prince Eugene, and Aqualand thermal spa
Csepel is off the beaten track as far as mainstream tourism is concerned
the frequent HÉV train takes ten minutes to reach the heart of District XXI
part of Budapest since 1950 yet an island community separated by geography and social history
Csepel was chosen by the Weiss brothers in the late 1800s as the location for their armaments factory
the factory had more than 15,000 employees
‘Red Csepel’ became a model workers’ paradise
a sprawling complex incorporating a nursery
rows and rows and rows of workshops and production lines
Today you’ll still find the main gates of the Csepel Works (‘Csepel Művek’
signposted above in authentic retro blue neon) by the Szent Imre tér HÉV stop
providing access to a strange lost world of neglected warehouses
Part of the complex is still in use, manufacturing the gleaming Bubi bikes lined up for public hire in prominent spots around Budapest – and as occasional host of a crazy themed escape game devised by the team at Rent A Trabant tours
Perhaps the most surprising realization for those unfamiliar with the HÉV network is that it goes all the way to Gödöllő
Gödöllő is a 26-hectare nature park centerpieced by the largest Baroque mansion in Hungary
Line 8 continues to Mogyoród, site of the Hungaroring Formula 1 racetrack and its year-round family-friendly events. Ten minutes and you’re at Szabadság tér in Gödöllő, closest stop to the Royal Palace
confidant of Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa
this vast Baroque pile passed to the Hungarian state
which in turn gifted it to Emperor Franz Josef and Queen Elisabeth after the coronation of 1867
would escape for months at a time here from Vienna
inviting Gypsy bands and staging Christmas parties
This era is now reflected in the Royal Suites
The beautiful gardens switch to winter closing times of 6pm after November 1st
HÉV line 9 via Cinkota runs to the age-old village of Csömör ten minutes away
Csömör has been settled since the Stone Age
Avars and Turks have also called it home – though the local Village Museum at Vörösmarty utca deals more with local peasant traditions
These days there’s more to Csömör than rural survival
expansion out of Budapest has caused a need for improved transport infrastructure
this time in the shape of the M0 ring road that passes alongside it

One of the most beautiful castles in Hungary is the Gothic-inspired, snow-white one at Martonvásár
The Brunszvik family owned it from the time of Maria Theresa in the mid-1700s
creating an idyllic English garden out of a swampy
deepening his tender feelings for one of the Brunszvik girls
The heyday of the estate and the expansion of the building in Classicist style came with Ferenc Brunszvik
This was how Beethoven would have seen it when he was busy giving piano lessons to Teréz és Jozefin
working on his sonatas or even gamboling with Jozefin in the park
The castle is alongside Martonvásár station
The largest Baroque pile in Hungary is in Gödöllő
40 minutes by car or direct suburban HÉV train from Budapest
Made famous by Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth
the palace is referred to here by the name of Grassalkovich
that Antal Grassalkovich rose through the ranks from minor nobility to increase his power and wealth
and had Baroque master András Mayerhoffer build a magnificent palace here in the 1740s
The Salzburg-born architect was also responsible for the Ráday Palace in Pécel (see below)
Antal’s son then squandered his father’s wealth
Gödöllő fell into the hands of a Belgian bank
Just past the high point of Harmáshatárhegy in the Buda hills
the Pesthidegkút estate was bought by Kuno von Klebelsberg and his wife when he was a prominent minister
The pair would have enjoyed their afternoon coffee admiring the magnificent view from the terrace of this aristocratic Neo-Baroque residence
the main building and outbuildings surrounded by a park full of trees and roses
Klebelsberg’s widow lived in the building until her eviction with the Communist takeover
Not only did she lose the castle but 4,000-volume library was taken away in a truck

The grounds and property completely renovated in 2018
Teleki-Tisza Castle at Nagykovácsi just past the north-western outskirts of Budapest
was the former home of three illustrious Hungarian families
the Telekis and the Tiszas all resided here
former Governor of Transylvania Count József Teleki marrying one of the Wattay girls
One of the Tiszas also tied the knot to further intermarry among the dynasties
Two Tiszas later became Hungarian prime ministers
assassinated on the eve of Hungarian independence in 1918

The Baroque Palace was built by Antal Grassalkovich (1694-1771) who was a loyal confidant of Empress Maria Theresa (1740-1780)
As president of the Neoacquistica Commissio
he decided which Hungarian noble family would get back their land in Hungary liberated from the Ottoman rule
he took into consideration not only the interests of the Habsburg treasury but his own as well
he managed to become one of the most influential Hungarian barons
who persuaded the Hungarian Diet to support a young Maria Theresa
he became chairman of the Hungarian Chamber and remained a close friend of the queen until his death
The construction of the palace began in 1733 with the first U shape building
while other extensions were built later: a second U shape building
after which the Palace was acquired by György Sina Aromanian banker who supported
the construction of the Chain Bridge with large sums
after which the state bought it and gave it as a
coronation gift to Emperor Franz Joseph and the very famous and beloved Empress Sisi
The Bavarian Princess’s Hungarian relations are very interesting
she spent months on Madeira and Korfu where she met Count Imre Hunyadi and his sister
She started to learn the Hungarian language from them
with whom they remained friends until her death
She learnt Hungarian History from Mihály Horváth who was sentenced to death and in effigie hanged after Russian and Habsburg troops crushed the Hungarian Freedom Fight of 1848-1849
She dived into Hungarian politics and culture with the help of Miksa Falk who later became the editor in chief of Pester Lloyd and probably only shares a surname with Peter Falk
Sisi came to the Palace whenever she could in order to ride, hunt and free herself from the intrigues and strict etiquette of the Royal Court. Allegedly
she had more than a friendship with Hungarian PM Gyula Andrássy; gossips went as far as to state that
the youngest child of the Queen is that of Andrássy
her bedroom had a secret stairway through which she could easily reach the Royal Stables
And it is also a fact that the Empress and the PM regularly wrote encrypted letters to each other with the help of Ida Ferenczy
Governor Miklós Horthy received the Palace and used it as his Summer villa in July and August
German and Soviet troops looted the building during WWII
It is not surprising that its former beauty had vanished and was only restored in the ’90s and 2000s
Now it is open to the public between 9 or 10 am and 6 pm every day
Audioguides are available in multiple languages
and there are many activities with which visitors can get a grasp of the era of the late 19th century
Here is a short film about what one can see and do in the Palace today:

Passengers will be able to travel all the way to the Déli railway station in Budapest on HÉV without having to transfer at the current terminus of the M2 metro line at Örs vezér Square
This means that it will be less complicated to reach destinations like Gödöllő and Csömör
transfer-free transport between downtown Budapest
The current metro line will be connected to the HÉV line
ensuring more convenient travelling conditions for those living in the outskirts
This also means that visiting the Royal Palace of Gödöllő will be much simpler
According to Világgazdaság
the project concerning the public transportation of four districts of Budapest will be funded by the EU
Design contracts may be concluded in the first half of next year
and the design process may take two to three years
the implementation of the project itself will begin
the future developments will solve one of the biggest traffic problems in the district
the trains will run underground and on overpasses
the investments will also be significant in protecting the environment
added that the goal is to improve public transportation in the XVIth district of Budapest
It should be implemented in such a way that it creates the most ideal conditions for the people living in the district
The investment will have a beneficial effect on the value of real estate and the development of public areas in the district as well
improved system of public transportation prices and passes is available in Hungary
County and Hungary passes (Vármegye- és Országbérlet) are available to purchase currently
which means that you are not able to buy kilometre-based tickets anymore
The simplification includes the reduction of the number of discounts available
Passengers have two options: either buying a full-price ticket or one with a 90% discount
Discounts also include free travel for families raising three or more kids
and people under 14 and above 65 can travel freely too
young people between 14 and 25 can buy tickets for a 50% discount
Students travel with a 90% discount regardless of their age

the wedding season starts and wedding planners offer exceptional and quite unusual locations and services for couples
It is no longer a dream to say yes in a magical castle
it is also an available option to “hire” a whole village for the special celebration
Everything is possible the only obstacle is money
According to the research of Pénzcentrum
the number of marriages in Hungary rapidly decreased from the 1970s
only 35,000 couples decided to walk down the alley
Approximately 52,500 couples got married after 2010 until 2016
the number of marriages was above fifty thousand
fewer people but still above fifty thousand said yes to each other
there were averagely five weddings reflected 1,000 residents
Marriage boom has been present in Hungary since 2010
The recent research conducted by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) clearly demonstrates the growth and provides an explanation for the growing number of people committing themselves

it is no longer a surprise that Hungarians spend millions to one wedding
many other features influence the wedding’s price
but it is a general fact that no Hungarian weddings are below 1 million HUF (3,000 EUR)
There are many types of weddings with different requests
starting from 1,5 million HUF (traditional weddings) up to 3,5 million HUF (weddings at unique locations) (4,400–10,400 EUR)
Yes, it is possible! Many famous Hungarian baths have special and enormous spaces where the wedding ceremony can be held. The antique and historical walls of the baths make the celebration even more, for example, the beautiful marble hall in Széchenyi Thermal Bath, Budapest
This price could also include the full usage of the baths’ facilities and services as well
Tropicarium is an exceptional marine zoo located in Budapest where all the unique creatures (including sharks) of the ocean can be seen
nearly 80–120 people can be sat with the decoration and the view
One of the walls of this hall is actually one side of the shark tank where the incredible predators are swimming in front of you
Old factories – 390,000–630,000 HUF (1,165–1880 EUR)
Abandoned factories and industrial buildings are also popular wedding locations in the country
equipment make the atmosphere extraordinary and can be easily decorated with any styles the organisers would like
Museums – 700,000–1,900,000 HUF (2,090–5,670 EUR)
Many do not think about museums as wedding locations
although these buildings also have spacious halls
everything is possible; even to rent the Hungarian National Museum in the capital
Castles – 1,000,000–1,100,000 HUF (3,000–3,200 EUR)
From the medieval to elegant castles like Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest or the magnificent Grassalkovich Castle in Gödöllő also can be magical wedding locations for the big day
Nature – 1,100,000–2,200,000 HUF (3,200–6,500 EUR)
there are several locations across the country to hold the wedding there
Village – 1,300,000–2,000,000 HUF (3,800–5,900 EUR)
Holding a wedding ceremony and celebration in an entire village has been famous for years
the happy couple also has the opportunity to rename the streets of the village for the big day
Vineyards – 1,100,000–2,650,000 HUF (3,200–8,000 EUR)
Vineyards are also beautiful locations for weddings for wine-lovers
Hungary has plenty of excellent ones across the country
is building a HUF 4 billion (EUR 10.6 million) global research and development and smart meter production facility in Gödöllő
the minister of foreign affairs and trade said on Thursday
The brownfield investment, which will be Wasion’s sixth such base, is being supported with a HUF 390 million government grant and will create 300 jobs, Péter Szijjártó said
The plant will produce one million smart electricity meters a year starting in 2025
The project will help Hungary continue breaking its export records
noting that Wasion exports its products to 50 countries
He said the investment proved that “pursuing a foreign policy based on common sense is worthwhile”
rather than danger in cooperation with China
urging the European Union to also choose cooperation over hostility with the country
I’ll bet none of those smart meters Will end up being used in Hungary anytime soon
Dávid Vitézy started the project when leading the Budapest Transport Centre (Budapest Közlekedési Központ – BKK)
The development connecting metro line M2 and the Gödöllő HÉV will be taken over by the Budapest Development Centre
we signed the contract: we took over from BKK the preparations for the development of metro line 2 and the HÉV in Gödöllő,” Vitézy announced on his Facebook page
The contract was signed on behalf of BKK by Katalin Walter
The aim is to connect metro line M2 to the H8 and H9 HÉV
Budapest’s Bosnyák square will be renewed by Zaha Hadid
the current metro line would be connected to the HÉV
The biggest part of the investment would be to connect the two lines
the stops would be equipped with P+R parking and bicycle storage
Renovated stops would not necessarily replace the old ones but would be built where most people live or where they can be reached by most people
The current line was built back in 1888 when the area was still almost uninhabited
the location of the stops and the needs of the people may not overlap

More than 200 harassments may have already taken place on the HÉV lines in Gödöllő and Csömör
A petition demanding security guards and cameras has already been signed by 3,749 passengers
MÁV knows only about one single passenger harassment
the number of passengers who have signed a petition demanding cameras and security personnel for suburban railway cars has jumped to 3,749
there may have been more than 200 harassments on the Gödöllő and Csömör suburban railway lines
acts of violence and vandalism occur almost weekly on the Gödöllő line of HÉV
there was an attempted rape; the woman resisted
an investigation has been launched about the case
Telex contacted the press department of MÁV-HÉV to get more information on exactly how many violent cases they know about and whether there is an emergency button or a camera in the trains
what they are planning to do to increase passenger safety
according to a new “practice” introduced this year
the company did not answer Telex’s questions
and the paper had to submit a public interest data request
in which they revealed that to the company’s knowledge
there has been only one violent case against passengers in the past year
that there were 29 cases of vandalism and 13 cases of attacks against the ticket inspectors
after the government declared an emergency situation due to the coronavirus pandemic
there was a one-month period of increased inspection with police officers and civilian guards
The answer also included that there is a single camera system operating in a three-car train on the Szentendre line
The current suburban railway cars are not planned to be equipped with cameras and emergency buttons
but they might be part of the standard equipment of the new cars intended to be purchased
MÁV-HÉV recommends that anyone in trouble should activate the emergency brakes
the emergency brakes are not a viable option
there were emergency buttons on the car doors that signalled the driver
those buttons were decommissioned about a year or two ago
The reason was revealed in another reader’s letter:
“I wrote last May because the driver did not see the door of the back car and closed the doors on an elderly man several times
It was then that several people noticed that the emergency buttons were missing.”
The official response to the inquiry was that the pushbuttons for alarm were decommissioned due to an official decision by the authorities
Due to the cost implications of meeting the conditions set out in the decision
There are no future plans to install new emergency buttons
MÁV-HÉV plans to purchase 54 (42 in the first batch) suburban railway cars for the H5
and H7 suburban railway lines (but not for the problematic H8 Gödöllő line)
The total cost of the cars is not yet known
it can be estimated to be over HUF 200 billion (€548 million)
The first round of the tender for the purchase was announced in September
it was already known that two large companies
air-conditioned vehicles equipped with Wi-Fi will come sometime in the first half of 2021 after the public procurement procedure
as MÁV-HÉV plans to conclude the contract by then
But the new cars will only be operational around 2023
