(Frontpage 201)Worldwide Angel: Bad GyalWordsAna VelascoPhotographyEric JohnsonStylingSebastian JeanBad Gyal burst onto the scene with “PAI,” a Catalan-sung cover of Rihanna’s “Work.” But now, between her debut album, La Joia, and warily delving into AI experimentation, the artist is only getting started. We explore in this FRONTPAGE story
it’s the modern condition to assume it’s always been that way
Bad Gyal burst onto the scene in 2016 with “PAI,” a Catalan-sung cover of Rihanna’s “Work,” with a flash both so bright yet so familiar
it was almost impossible to believe it hadn’t been around forever
But her ascent was actually part of a long and winding history of dancehall
and dembow — music that informed Spaniard Alba Farelo since childhood
It took a long time for mainstream culture to catch up to the chart-topping
which have soundtracked parties across the Caribbean
Before some of the biggest names in the biz wisened up to cross-over collaborations (Drake and Bad Bunny
the beat-heavy music already held strongly on the culture
It’s been eight years since that first video of a baby-faced
comments praising her brazen songs — about sex
setting the tone for the continuous stream of work she’s released since
she’s built an army of loyal fans who buck against the idea that the type of music Farelo and her contemporaries make (especially other female artists) is anything but empowering
Highsnobiety / Eric JohnsonOne listen to any of her hits
from “Fiebre” to “Flow 2000,” reaffirms something that frightens anyone who doesn’t “get” it: The music is fucking fun
Take the breakup revenge track “Perdió Este Culo,” which celebrates post-breakup glow-ups and emotional clarity; or its remixed “Chulo pt.2,” which tacks on collaborations by two other forces of the genre
to create an instant hit and a music video with over 250 million views and over 300 million Spotify streams
Farelo and her collaborators (Anitta and Ivy Queen
to name a couple) are here to prove that the game has changed
and sexiness and sexuality on a woman’s terms are something not only worth respecting
Beyond numbers that back up the success of female talent
something more culturally defining is happening: Gone are the days when only male voices blasted through the speakers at clubs or parties
ponen algo mío y suena tan duro” (“Every time I enter the club
they play something of mine and it goes so hard”)
Bikini set STYLIST’S OWN Jacket and pants WILLY CHAVARRIAHighsnobiety / Eric JohnsonWith the immediate success of her work and the monumental popularity of the urban genre right as she hit the scene
there was no shortage of interest by major labels to sign Farelo
but the singer-composer weighed her options
“They have a legendary roster of artists and are an iconic label in music and in business.”
Though she’s helped to steer the music industry and strengthen the behemoth that reggaeton and dancehall have become
Bad Gyal is only now celebrating the release of her first album
La Joia — a celebration that looks a little like a victory lap
La Joia (a play on “the jewel” and “the joy”) is a continuation of
with tracks that dig into the types of themes and sounds she’s been creating for years
Top and briefs MM6 MAISON MARGIELA Earrings SWAROVSKIHighsnobiety / Eric JohnsonNot least are Farelo’s incredible styling and visuals
which are at the forefront of her creative identity
Farelo was studying fashion when “PAI” blew up and she decided to focus on music
But that doesn’t mean she left fashion behind
Her penchant for looks that she describes as “fearless and sexy” have made her the newest darling of fashion front rows and red carpets
and her live shows are as much about the clothes as they are about her raw lyrics
and the reaffirmation that she is an entertainer with a capital “E.”
To celebrate the landmark moment of her album release
as well as other achievements that prove her already bright star is only just rising
we chatted with the Bad Gyal herself to discuss music
and how she keeps her head in place while navigating the crazy world she lives in

Bad Gyal: My objectives are always to keep growing
and be able to collaborate with artists I admire
which at some point in my career looked so far away
You’ve expressed admiration for larger-than-life icons like Rihanna
Is their success something you strive to emulate
They have careers that from the outside seem to have very little limitations
They’ve been able to develop other ambitions outside of music
Music is a profession that can open many doors to other disciplines
Beyoncé has famously spoken about how she taps into an alter ego in order to be comfortable as a performer of that magnitude
Do you feel like you have to leave parts of Alba behind in order for aspects of Bad Gyal to grow
What Bad Gyal represents to the audience is a woman who is confident
That side that dances and sings and has no taboos
she is a big part of me and a real part of my personality and who I am as a woman
but I am obviously not always that super confident or that woman who has no doubts and feels like she can eat the world
and a part that allows me to present myself outwardly and to express myself creatively
Those are the parts of myself I want to highlight the most
and bracelet PANDORA Shoes MANOLO BLAHNIKHighsnobiety / Eric JohnsonWhat are some dreams
But I’ve also accomplished many of my dreams
to be happy and to live the life that I get to live in the happiest way possible
What is one recent look of yours that stands out as a favorite
I loved a look I wore for a concert in Mexico
I was also wearing a cowboy hat that I had worn for my video for “La Prendo.”
and of course what my music speaks about are things I love
things that can be found in dancehall or reggaeton
You were one of the pioneers of your genre and helped open doors for a lot of other new musicians with similar proposals
That’s how life is — there are cycles and there are always new people that encourage us older ones to keep growing
And I think it’s a good sign that the music has developed and that there’s more interest
Bra CALVIN KLEIN Pants MCQUEEN BY SEÁN MCGIRR Jacket CASABLANCAHighsnobiety / Eric JohnsonHow do you ground yourself
and then to also be able to return to my place
We always have to be balancing and seeking balance because this life can be very crazy and full of change
you were recently at the center of an AI experimentation
where someone created a fake AI collaboration between you and Bad Bunny
As someone who uses a lot of tech tools to create your music
what do you think about the state of AI and its place in music
I’m navigating it at the same pace as the rest of the world because it’s very new
It can be a positive tool for composers who aren’t interpreters
and a lot of people are starting to work in that way
I’ve been in sessions where composers have presented an idea using my vocals laid out by AI
it’s not a way of working that I feel comfortable with
When you are sharing AI work with people’s real voices
It definitely makes me want to reject it because it’s not the way I like to work
so having the work already so laid-out takes away my joy and drive a bit
If you could give baby Bad Gyal some advice

Tibetan sociologist Gyal Lo remembers receiving a phone call in 2016 about what he describes as “a serious matter.” It was his brother
calling with concerns about his grandchildren
who “had become strangely different.”
The children had “forgotten the Tibetan they knew and could no longer speak it properly,” says Gyal Lo
who lived in a Chinese province at the time
“The parents and the children couldn’t have a proper conversation with each other in Tibetan.”
The video above, drawn from the new FRONTLINE documentary Battle for Tibet
Deciding to investigate what was happening at schools across Tibet
Gyal Lo visited over 50 kindergarten boarding schools for Tibetan children between 2017 and 2020
He says he found little teaching of Tibetan language and culture contrary to official claims
Sharing what he saw when he visited the boarding schools
there were two main areas of teaching in the boarding schools for pre-school children
One is to instill the communist ideology and the second is to instill Chinese culture
These two subject areas of teaching are being implemented to change the Tibetan children’s mindset.”
The Chinese government has placed around 800,000 Tibetan children — including ones as young as four — in boarding schools where they are taught in Mandarin
The video above examines this aspect of the Chinese Communist Party’s rule over Tibet
investigates the struggle over the survival of the Tibetan language
the use of surveillance on the Tibetan population
and China’s branding of the Dalai Lama as an anti-China separatist
despite his repeated statements that he would accept self-rule within China
The government did not agree to an interview with FRONTLINE
but in written responses said the Tibetan boarding schools are important in a region with a highly scattered population
and are examples of “human rights and cultural heritage protection.”
says in the video that without knowing Mandarin
“it will be more difficult for you to find a more meaningful job,” and “you will be more handicapped in communicating with the rest of the country.” In the video above
President Xi Jinping is seen addressing students at a Tibetan boarding school
saying they will have “a lot of opportunities” in life
‘we have to start from childhood,’” Robert Barnett
“So now the policy is to have kindergartens teaching in Chinese language
and basically only Chinese when they’re in a kindergarten,” he says
Tibetans would “become more Chinese,” Barnett says
who became outspoken about the need to preserve Tibetan language and culture
says he eventually lost his university teaching job
“These boarding pre-schools erase the fundamental mindset of Tibetan children from the age of four and replace it with a new Chinese mindset,” Gyal Lo says
Tibetan national culture and identity will be completely destroyed.”

In a group photo, Offset and Bad Gyal stood among other celebs, but it was a separate, more intimate-looking shot of the two that quickly took off. In the image, Offset is seen standing behind the “Chulo” singer, who is slightly leaning toward him. Naturally, fans couldn’t resist speculating about the nature of their relationship, and the rumor mill started turning.
For those keeping up with Offset’s personal life, the timing of the picture only fueled more chatter. The rapper and his wife, Cardi B, are currently navigating through a very public split, with Cardi filing for divorce earlier this year. Despite the drama, Cardi has consistently stated that infidelity wasn’t the cause of their separation, yet fans seem to be on high alert.
Offset, however, wasn’t here for the gossip. Taking to social media to address the whispers, he quickly shut down the rumors with a simple but direct response: “I took a pic with Anna Wintour the same way. I CAME ALONE.”
It’s clear Offset isn’t letting a harmless photo derail his focus. He’s been busy on his own grind, from fashion collaborations to upcoming music projects, and he’s making sure the narrative stays centered on his work. With both Offset and Cardi in the spotlight for their respective ventures, it seems like the fans will have to find something else to speculate about.
Stay tuned as more details unfold in the world of Offset and Cardi B—there’s always something new to discuss!

standing behind her in the same manner he did Bad Gyal
Many fans turned the rumours into a joke about him having cheated on Cardi B. “I’ve never seen Anna Wintour so close to someone [blushing with hand over mouth emoji] You slept [with] her TOO???” someone wrote
“You’ve been known to lie with ease and be a disappointment to all so why should we believe you?”
Some people did come to Offset’s defence. “The power of the internet, people’s celebrity obsession and the need to be “in the know” needs to be studied,” a fan tweeted
adding: “These ‘fans’ gone start saying you took Anna back to your room

Cardi B didn’t comment on the rumours, but Bad Gyal shared another photo of her alongside Offset and Doechii to her Instagram story (per The Express Tribune) – alluding that the event wasn’t an intimate one
Earlier this year, Cardi B defended her husband
An alleged source told PEOPLE that the ‘I Like It’ star found her marriage to Offset was “more of a distraction than support”
The Bronx rapper set the record straight in an Instagram post that Offset “helps [her] a lot with [her] business and the kids.”
My claim is for him to only pay for the bills he already pays on the kids and the new one.”
In other news, it is rumoured that Cardi has already given birth to her and Offset’s son

Imagine the pulsating energy of a Jamaican dancehall clash
imagine a Japan-born selector commanding that stage
outshining seasoned veterans and making history
That’s Notorious International’s Marie Sano
known more popularly in sound system circles as ‘Bad Gyal Marie’
she became the first woman to ever win the Magnum Global Sound Clash at Reggae Sumfest
shattering expectations in a male-dominated arena
Sano’s journey is more than just a breakthrough moment
From Tokyo’s neon-lit streets to the bass-heavy dance halls of Jamaica
Sano weaves together her dual worlds with an unyielding passion that defies borders
making her not just a sound clash champion
The female selector’s trip to Japan last August marked the continuation of an annual tour tradition
bringing Jamaican flavour to her homeland alongside Jamaica’s own ZJ Liquid
“It was a great experience to have ZJ Liquid on the tour
Every year I do [a] Japan tour with [a] Jamaican selector,” Sano shared in her distinctively strong Japanese accent
which she retains even after 15 years living in Jamaica
Her passion is one of the reasons Magnum Tonic Wine recognised Sano as one of the 25 influential figures in the dancehall industry
awarding her a commemorative Magnum 25 plaque
It was presented as a surprise during one of her bookings at the East Japanese Restaurant in New Kingston
Planning for her tour next August through to September
Sano is already looking forward to performing on the Far East Reggae Cruise hosted by legendary Japanese sound system Mighty Crown
Sano bridges the sounds of the two countries
merging her Japanese heritage with her Jamaican-inspired artistry
When asked about one place she recommends in Japan
“Shibuya and Harajuku areas in Tokyo!”
She describes these districts as vibrant hubs where skyscrapers meet cutting-edge fashion
and unique Japanese culture – a must-see for any visitor looking to experience the dynamic lifestyle of the East Asian country
Introduced to the sound clash world by her husband and partner
the female selector never thought she would compete on the stages against some of the world’s biggest sound systems
“I never [believed] a woman could handle the sound clash world
but my husband believed in my talent and told me I could do it
is good chemistry and a dat bring us the wins,” Sano remarked
Her role as a woman and a selector who doesn’t originate from the island has its challenges
so this means I must work even harder to reach all audiences,” she said
making it clear that her international background also makes her stand out
“Clash is also looked at as a man’s world
it is not easy to survive in this music industry as a selector
Use me as example … my English [is] not 100 per cent
and I am proof that it can be done,” Sano said
“I never have nobody when I come [to] Jamaica
I never have a teacher that teach me per se
The people make me feel accepted … and is dem give me the name ‘Bad Gyal’
you have to read the crowd – the real champions of the dancehall who [in turn] make you a champion of dancehall
I want to big up everybody who believe in me
and a special big up to Magnum Tonic Wine,” she added
Since Notorious International’s win in July
bringing new bookings across Jamaica and especially in Montego Bay
For young women wanting to make their mark in dancehall
Sano’s advice is simple but powerful: “Believe in yourself
Believe in what you love and what you want to achieve and keep performing towards it [as] well.”

Spanish singer Bad Gyal oozes effortless sex appeal, so it's a no-brainer that during this pandemic she took advantage of the at-home experience to film a steamy DIY music video for her new song, "Aprendiendo El Sexo," which premieres today on office
“This song is inspired by my personal relationships," she tells us
"It describes… relationships where you feel really comfortable with someone and you want to spend all day with [them]
And you can have really sexy and hot moments.”
And there are hot and sexy moments in abundance
The music video gives major "Let's make a porno" energy
right before the action starts—pristine hotel suite overlooking the ocean
Bad Gyal and her man are out here living their best lives
and we as viewers are lucky enough to get a teaser of the home-video
The song revisits the DIY sad-dancehall sound that put her on the map when her cover of Rihanna’s “Work” (titled “Pai”) went viral
the Catalonia born-and-raised Bad Gyal’s fame is now exploding overseas
“I found dancehall because where I grew up
"So it was because of the rise of reggae music here that I became interested in Jamaican music
When I discovered dancehall… I fell in love with the rhythm and I felt like that was my vibe.”
The daring singer has drawn from reggaeton and dancehall to craft her own Latin R&B vibe
and in a time when the clubs are shuddered
makes you want to shake your ass in your living room
Watch the video for "Aprendiendo El Sexo" below
Music video directed by MANSON and produced by CANADA
Song produced by El Guincho and additional production by rawsanches and Fakeguido
Have any desire to find your way into the world of alt gothic electronica? Listening to Elita’s new album Hell Hill will take you exactly there
the band is solidifying their place in the eerily pixelated world they created
With roots in a haunted little Newfoundland town
It’s hard for us to pinpoint their unique aesthetic but it definitely exists because of their distinct upbringing in one of the smallest towns in North America
The album hosts a range of head-turning titles such as Masturbating in a Coffin which was pulled from one of Elita’s old Instagram captions and coupled with a spontaneous music video shot on a trip to Japan
office was able to sit down with them ahead of their tour
trying to solve the puzzle of the band who sounds like they’re from a planet filled with narcotically charged sounds and post-punk extraterrestrials
When I first sat down with front-woman Elita, aka Emma, she told me a story about the electric track Only Famous for My Tits which almost didn’t make it on the album as it’s a bit different from the rest
Amidst a crowded hotel bar in the Lower East Side
she recalled a time when she and Tim were back in their small town of St
Newfoundland and their server was being noticeably rude towards her
When Tim got up to go to the bathroom he overheard the snarky waitress mocking Emma saying
They went home and wrote a killer song about it
In their latest era, Elita is basically a band living inside a video game building each new level bit by bit. We got a behind-the-scenes look at their latest music video, Ego
which is filled with nods to Trainspotting and rage rooms
we talked about everything from the video to their distinctly Elita sound
It was Trainspotting inspired with druggy dens
E: The dudes knew each other for a while but I met them both around the same time maybe around 2017. Tim's my boyfriend
We met through a mutual friend and went skateboarding
It was a really cute little first time meeting someone…and then we broke into an abandoned school
No way is that something you would usually do
E: At the time we were doing that, just getting up to whatever. We skateboarded through the abandoned school. Krank is the bassist and I met him at the same time
So you guys formed your little gang in Newfoundland
But one night I remember they sent me an instrumental and I wrote so quickly
Within a few hours I sent them back singing on my phone and it became our first song
We recorded it with super shitty equipment and in 2018 we put it out
It was fun getting to express myself in that way because I never really did that
And then we have a North American tour coming up
Do you feel like knowing each other so long makes it easier
Tim: Me and Krank have played in probably 30 random bands together before we ever started this one with Emma
I sort of take it for granted but it adds to the spontaneity because we’re comfortable to just go for shit
Have you had a favorite city you've played so far
Maybe smaller cities are missing a bit of that
You just want to be seen and felt and I think that there's always some alt people in the crowd that connect with that
I'm originally from and I spent 17 years in a town of 700 people
I had to travel 40 minutes to go to school
Do you have a favorite song from the album right now
T: I like Hikikomori. It was done really carefree and I like the way Emma’s voice sounds in it
And Hikikomori as a topic is something that entrusts all of us and it’s always felt like an honest song
What’s something you feel like people aren’t expecting from this album that might be a surprise
Krank: The final track, Hell Hill
It's 10 minutes long and it’s basically a horror soundscape with a bunch of mini songs within it including one of our first unreleased songs called Cemetery that people have been trying to get since 2017
That is slipped in the middle of the song as an Easter Egg
Hell Hill is available on all streaming platforms, give it a listen here

superstar-stripper-ballerina-computer science mechanic-car builder-fashionista-designer
The list goes on forever…,” said the artist and entrepreneur on a morning call in Los Angeles after a streaming session
she used to say that proclamation often to her father
Born to a Japanese mother and an American father
Yasuka’s tumultuous upbringing was the catalyst to where she is now and where she wants to be in the future
She’s been an enigma for some time; not much has been unveiled about the multi-hyphenate—until now
Her childhood in Japan as a “hāfu,” a term used for kids who are not fully Japanese
not being able to afford the things others could awakened a determination in her
she became an amalgamation of all her wildest dreams
All her interests and eras over the years have given us the Sukii Baby we’re getting to know now
You might know her from a certain album cover or more recently her thriving streaming community
Yasuka’s love of video games has always been present
Her father is a computer scientist from the generation of Star Wars and Final Fantasy
“I actually grew up on every single console that there has ever been made…I pretty much played almost every game,” she shared
She started streaming more video game content after taking a half decade hiatus from screens in general including TV and movies
Her break came from another awakening and pivotal moment in her life—a loss of a loved one
“I had promised my grandmother that I would go to college in America
and she passed away when I was on the flight back to America
‘I need to lock in.’ I need to take life a little bit more seriously
because you know how parent-child relationships kind of go
but that was just not a place where I was able to live
sometimes not doing so good,” she revealed candidly
I had to figure everything out by myself.”
she was dabbling in Adobe Photoshop and eventually became a master
she started gaining inspiration from unlikely sources ranging from her dreams
have magnetic emotions tied to them with imagery from all over in hues melancholy blue
“I would just indulge in so much culture and everything around the world so much that I just wanted to start making photos that make you feel something.” Once she mastered Photoshop
she added video editing and creative directing to her repertoire of talents
SUKII BABY wears JACKET and SKIRT by JORDAN LUCA
a fact that many of us share in common with her
before ultimately deciding to go “full force” into art
It's not necessarily just focused on housing
She had wanted to work at Disney studios at one point
then even Adult Swim but ultimately started her own thing with taking commissions
A characteristic you need to build success all from scratch
a love that came from her grandfather’s work as a mechanic
You could call her an engineer—a fitting addition to her growing gifts in life
and Hellcats while Sukii’s old Forerunner once stopped in the middle of nowhere
“The universal joint fell out and I just heard a scraping noise on the ground and I got out of the car and looked underneath
long pipe was just skidding across the concrete underneath
the next question in the interview was if she’d work on a fixer-upper
Her art has been a grounding force for her throughout her life
although she was an extraordinary student in other subjects
“I would be so frustrated that I couldn't speak English like everyone else could
I had so much pent up frustration from that
I used to go mute a lot and I wouldn't really talk to people,” she shared
Yasuka kept art gifts often from her family in Japan and over time
her art became her main source of expression to cope with her frustrations
“I've always definitely wanted to make novelty items
I like things that are bigger than what they're supposed to be,” she said
because I truly don't think I'm the best at using my verbal skills
I didn't even know that you can have these talents as jobs.” She wasn’t banking on being a famous or rich artist
she just wanted to be happy as her upbringing was the opposite
She cites designer Yoon Ambush and painter Egon Schiele as some of her favorite artists
Yoon’s influences from Japan have inspired Sukii’s artist journey while Schiele’s works make her feel like she’s in his paintings and feel the emotions of the images depicted
Her mother is another artist in her own right that’s been a forever inspiration for Sukii
She noted her parents would jokingly argue about where she gets her creativity from—it’s definitely her mom
“My mom's always been like that girl.” She’s passed down so much to Sukii from her curiosity about the world to how she carries herself
She fights for what she wants and her strength and outlook on life has impacted the multi-hyphenate in a myriad of ways
SUKII BABY wears TOP by MELITTA BAUMEISTER
Even her personal style is influenced by her mother’s
that's crazy!” Eclectic is the word she used to describe her aesthetic
and a beanie with that signature side bang peaking out
She recalls growing into her body earlier than the other girls in school and making clothes from unlikely fabrics due to growing up in a low income household
I didn't really care about people’s opinions because I was so worried about what was going on at home I was just trying to get through my day.” She still wears a lot of her dad’s clothes
“My dad had the craziest swag.” His archive includes pieces from Japan in the ‘90s ranging from FUBU to Timberland boots
he just wears Sketchers,” she said as a giggle escaped
with her eclectic style she’s wearing her pair Salomon XT Whispers with ideas to make them even more her by adding pearl beads
What doesn't meet the eye is how passionate she is about education and building community
“I’m getting loud overall about women in more fields and I’m definitely screaming
hooting and hollering about art.” She’s hoping to serve her community with multiple charities that make an actual difference from clean water to solar power
“A lot of people aren't teaching younger generations how to do anything
That's kind of really what I use streaming for
and I teach them how to do different mediums of art or engineering or just whatever else that they might want to learn that they didn't know about,” she asserted
“Sometimes I surprise them [the streaming audience]
so they don't get so used to being comfortable
we're gonna hop on here and play a game.’ No
She’s utterly limitless and is making sure the next generation is too
This year and the rest of her future looks like having a solo art exhibition featuring her pieces from cyanotypes to sculptures
launching her brand that will be reminiscent of souvenirs that can be held onto throughout life
“I hope people take souvenirs home that help them with themselves and their future
that's such a blessing to even think about.” She’s also on a quest to be on the Discovery Channel or National Geographic
She just loves teaching people about things that they didn’t know as she had a “bookworm” childhood
Spewing random facts is a hidden talent that keeps getting unveiled
RIGHT:: SUKII BABY wears TOP by MELITTA BAUMEISTER
LEFT: SUKII BABY wears TOP by WILLY CHAVARRÍA
She’s healing her inner child by having the freedom to make and do whatever she wants and taking note from her grandmother’s wise words
“You’ll never know if you don’t try.” That phrase is the definition of courage and boldness to the young artist
“Being courageous definitely means walking through the door of starting or being whatever it is that you're trying to be.”
Aime Simone takes office through his creative journey
from the streets of Paris to the stages of the music world
with a unique path that weaves through fashion
Overall I think I had a hard experience of growing up
I felt a lot of anger and got into a lot of trouble
I spent a lot of time playing in the streets
and during school vacation I stayed with my grandparents and played all day outside in the countryside with my sister and brother and our cousins
Through my parents and the context of Paris I was exposed to a lot of culture
I was not particularly interested in those things but I became educated to it
that definitely affected my a viewpoint on the world
Debate and argumentation is a big part of French culture in general
It’s ingrained in me to look for the flaws
There are positives and negatives that go along with that
It’s difficult to resume in a few sentences how I have been influenced by my family and environment
This is a big topic that can go in so many directions
You mentioned previously in an interview that you see Berlin as a total universe
with a timeless and cohesive artistic language
something particular about it that makes it what it is
artistically it is difficult to not be pulled into their universe
Places evolve over time but a city with a history such as Berlin or Paris is heavy
A craft that everyone can connect to.” Do you think more experimental or alternative music is elitist
Oftentimes it is difficult to differentiate between what is subversive for the sake of subculture (emancipation
and what is inaccessible for the sake of exclusivity (to create us/them
Experimental and alternative music may need a certain amount of education in order to understand it
I think that there is a simplicity with pop music that is very generous

What’s your take on mental illness and the way it’s perceived and treated in the Western world
with whom you can exchange experiences and perspectives on this with
I think that there is still a lot to be discovered about mental illness that we don’t understand yet
I had very extreme mental health problems for over a decade
All the clinics and doctors and medications I was prescribed did nothing to help me out of that
You threw your poetry book at Pete Doherty
It was during one of my longterm stays at a clinic
I had been listening to his solo album a lot
and I asked for permission to leave for the evening to be able to go to his show in Paris
I brought a notebook of poems and lyrics I had been writing
He picked it up and started reading to the audience
I thought it would be amazing to have his guitar to write songs on
he reached out his hand and pulled me on stage
and then I had his guitar and I was in front of an audience for the first time in my life
I played one of the first songs I had written
and Peter watched from the side of the stage
After that he asked me to wait to go backstage after the show
and there he started to learn the song I had performed
and my permission from the clinic had run out
He was confused that I was leaving so quickly although he had invited me backstage
so I explained that I was in a clinic for anorexia
So that was the start of a close friendship that lasted quite a while
It was very meaningful that he believed in me
He made me promise to never stop making music
You also were working with Hedi Slimane in fashion
What was it like for you to move a bit out of music into another creative industry
he probably knew that I was around Peter (who he was close to in the early 2000s) and that I was making music
He hired me as an exclusive model for Saint Laurent
but it was an experience that allowed me to travel and learn about how things work in the fashion industry
I was pretty naive and I didn’t understand that friends in the industry are not real friends
I was in very bad mental health at the time
I don’t think I was ready to handle it well
What was it like when you first arrived in Los Angeles
That’s where Hedi had his Saint Laurent studio
eating tacos… living in a kind of glamorous
But I still had some kind of fantasy about LA
What was it like to return to Paris after living in these different cities and things changing in your life along the way
It was time for me to return and to come to terms with where I come from
a city that had never felt very supportive
It took a few years but now I feel like I have my role here
this is where I’m supposed to be right now
I don’t think there is much of a music scene in Paris like there used to be
10 years ago there was a big scene of live bands
But recently there have been a lot of artists moving to Paris
I do feel like there is something developing here right now
Live music seems to have fallen off in New York for sure in the last maybe 10–15 years
I think that’s because of social media and also the cost and complexity of producing live shows
People are entertained on the phone so there is less need to go out
It’s depressing to be too connected to the internet for too many years
And music is one of the most powerful ways to bring people together
I don’t want to be perceived in any particular way
I just want to live my lifestyle in a way that feels inspiring
I think a lot of people assume things about me that aren’t true because of it
But I’m not gonna change to make it easier for people to understand me
Your upcoming album REV carries themes of revolution
Revolution has always been relevant in my life
I never fit in to what society expected me to be
I’ve always gone against the rules because I had no other choice
it’s like I was put on this earth to disrupt
I want revenge for all the years I spent suffering
for the time I lost caught into endless cycles of mental and physical pain
I want revenge on the people that let me down
that their lack of belief or animosity didn’t stop me
There’s a strong sense of mythology and world-building in REV
from the city I live in to the industry I am part of
I found that using fiction and allegory allowed me to be more truthful in a way
The world of REV is something that imposed itself
it was impossible to make it anything else
I think artists often have the experience that what they create is coming through them
The world of this album was created like that
The album’s sonic palette is more aggressive than previous works
and that means that you don’t let anything stop you
The sound of the album needed to reflect that energy
needed to create an immersive world where the listener can enter into the story
but it has a range of opposite extremes that create a lot of depth and allow for the softer
soulful moments to shine through even brighter
I think that the aggression in the sound is something that takes getting used to
you have learned the language of this world
you will understand what it means to be rev

The music documentary festival In-edit has premiered "La Joia"
the long-awaited documentary about the Catalan star Alba Farelo
the most international contemporary Catalan singer
which will premiere tonight at 9pm at Cinemes Aribau
“La Joia: Bad Gyal” will have its world premiere at the Inaugural Gala of the 22nd edition of In-Edit Barcelona
The gala will include a photocall and red carpet with the participation of the entire documentary team
including its director and Bad Gyal herself
as well as numerous guests to be confirmed shortly
We have been lucky enough to see it in a previous press screening
so we will tell you some details about it (without spoilers or telling you the juiciest details)
“La Joia: Bad Gyal” will have its world premiere at the Inaugural Gala of the 22nd edition of In-Edit Barcelona
David Camarero portrays the steps of the singer from Vilassar de Mar on her way to conquering the mainstream through the release of her first album,“La Joia: Bad Gyal”
forcing her to make an exercise of resilience within the industry and with herself
the camera follows the singer from Barcelona through cities like Barcelona
but always with one theme in the background: the release of the album La Joia
which for various reasons was delayed for more than a year
During this time we see the singer in the studio
arranging the songs that will be on the album
But also in fashion events such as Fashion Week in Paris or in concerts like the one she did with Karol G
At her side always the lens of the director
who records handheld camera giving the documentary that air of a birthday party recording
Because that is the best part of the documentary
The parts in which the camera captures intimate moments of the singer
the moments of stress (for an album that is not released or for a few joints that have been lost)
of laughter before a concert or desperation for things to go well
Also the singer’s personality and determination when it comes to directing her own music videos or deciding on her clothes
this is a documentary that doesn’t talk so much about Bad Gyal’s rise
It is easy to watch it and feel that you are not following a super international artist
but a colleague from Barcelona who mixes Catalan and Spanish when she speaks and who sometimes just wants to go home and “smoke a joint” when she is stressed
And just to discover this close face is worth the trip to see the documentary

Documenting the conundrum of religious waste
If you’ve ever been to a Tibetan Buddhist temple
they’re presented to show appreciation or as a greeting
But Tibetan anthropologist and filmmaker Huatse Gyal has been casting a new urgency on the environmental impact of the ubiquitous scarves
In addition to taking a closer look at their meaning and history
Gyal’s documentary film Khata: Purity or Poison
draws attention to the fact that khata are overwhelmingly made of polyester
Their excessive use has led to deleterious effects on the natural environment
and a perplexing religious conundrum: What happens when ceremonial objects are not only mass-produced but become harmful agents driving pollution
Gyal is a professor of anthropology at Rice University who grew up in a nomadic pastoralist community in Tibet
Gyal talks about how essential khata are to Tibetan communication
and where can you find them in Tibetan spaces
Khata are ceremonial scarves that we traditionally offer to Buddhist teachers
as a way of expressing our sincerity and gratitude
and people in higher positions can also offer khata to younger people or people who are less senior
as a way to kind of “carry the blessing.” By offering a khata
you’re creating a connection between you and the recipient
The physical procedure of offering a khata looks like this: person A places the khata over the shoulders of person B
while person B bows their head and keeps their hands together in a prayer position
Khata are also laid over religious statues
and even offered during political or business transactions
They’re also given to friends or loved ones when they leave or come back from a trip; it’s a way of saying “safe trip” or “be in good health.” Simply put
and in reference to the construction of the Jokhang by the Fifth Dalai Lama (1617–1682)
But if we look outside of the textual tradition
we find that khata have another origin story
Tibetan pastoralists have a long tradition of offering each other pieces of sheep’s wool before a long journey
khata later replaced this piece of sheep’s wool
and there came to be a wider culture of offering white cloth to people
“Sometimes material objects can be more potent than language.”
based on the traditions of people living on the Tibetan Plateau
this exchange of a piece of sheep’s wool was adopted into Bon and larger Buddhist culture
Karma Delek notes the Buddhist textual significance of khata
it’s important to pay attention to how a preliminary version of khata was being used in early
The reason I’m stressing this is because we tend to see Tibetan civilization primarily through the lens of texts—Tibetan Buddhist texts
I think we often reduce Tibetan culture to texts
But the farmers and pastoralists have a long oral tradition of building localized relationships with the yaks and other animals
and developing particular relationships to their ancestral land that aren’t necessarily [privileged with the same spiritual authority]
I think we have to see practices like the exchange of khata
within a larger context of relationships to the natural environment that predate the textual depictions of Tibetan Buddhist thought
Everyone you interviewed in the film had a different definition for khata
Some said that they mean “peace,” or that the white color represents purity; others said it’s a reference to Tibet being a “snow land.” Are these meanings fairly representative
There is definitely a spectrum of interconnected meanings
Some Tibetans speak about the whiteness of khata representing “pure heart,” and others talk about how it’s a reference to snow
“snow” is often used as a kind of metaphorical shorthand for “pure heart,” so it’s hard to know how people are making that distinction in their minds
Tibetan people use khata in order to communicate certain ideas
Let’s say you give a khata to your friend who is finishing their PhD and just defended their dissertation
Offering a khata is way more powerful than just saying
I sincerely wish you the best,” and so forth
The khata plays an essential role in communicating that sentiment
so to speak—the ritual exchange marks this new space
The exchange makes this fleeting moment a bit more durable
Sometimes material objects can be more potent than language
who says that khata have actually created a “good bond” between the Tibetans and the Han Chinese
I’m not sure if this is a common sentiment among Tibetans
more and more Chinese Buddhist followers of Tibetan teachers are using khata
If khata are considered “connectors”—one end connected to the recipient’s heart
and one connected to the person who’s offering—it’s natural to think that they would create this good bond
These khata-made bonds don’t just form in Buddhist settings
You see them being exchanged between government officials
khata have played a role in diplomacy between Tibetans
They were traditionally made of sheep’s wool or silk
Most of them are manufactured in a place called Ranyi Township
It’s a place that makes a lot of religious objects: statues
The workers in the factories are Chinese—the owners too
Some have a history of making and selling khata; they’re generally part of the third generation of families doing that kind of business
A Chinese town that depends on Tibetan culture for its livelihood—it upends a lot of the ideas we have about Tibetans being the passive recipients of modern development
Many of the factory owners express gratitude for Tibetan culture; there’s this sense that it’s been feeding their families
There’s an interesting interdependence there
One more thing: the population in Ranyi is only about 30,000 people
this town produced more than 100 million khata
in the rooms of Buddhist monasteries; they get stuck in fences
Birds get their claws stuck in the threads
Animals eat them—I’ve seen khata inside animal carcasses—and they get really hard and knotted in there; you can’t even cut them out of the belly of a cow
they release toxic smoke when they’re burnt—and you can see them melt into a solid form—which happens during offerings
Sheep-shearers now use khata to tie the legs of sheep
They’re being used for all kinds of utilitarian purposes now
What is this doing to the spiritual value of khata
isn’t there a sense that more khata means more auspiciousness
but I think khata are on their way from the realm of sacredness to the realm of the ordinary
and ceremonial interchangeably to refer to the high status of khata in Tibetan culture.) The polyester material doesn’t help; before they were mass-produced
They were like the Buddha’s teaching—a precious jewel
There’s a deep logic in Tibetan culture that rare means precious
It seems like at least some Tibetans are aware of the negative consequences of polyester khata
but the understanding of them as objects of purity is also extremely strong
not many people are cognizant of the environmental impact
There are many young Tibetan entrepreneurs
and cultural activists who are actively advocating for use of healthier raw material for khata
More and more Tibetans are increasingly aware of the negative impact of polyester khata on their culture
My friend Tenpa Tarje runs a textile factory committed to making ecologically friendly khata out of sheep’s wool
The word “wool” is the same as “victory” in Tibetan
sheep’s wool khata are essentially harmless to the environment
Tarje uses traditional methods and a Japanese technology that makes it easier to thread the wool
He’s also an advocate for reducing the number of khata we use
If students switched back to offering just one khata per graduating class
that one khata would take on way more meaning for the teacher
this khata is from the class of 2023,” and so forth
What challenges do you foresee in changing people’s perspectives
There’s also a tendency to try to make gestures more “spectacular” by giving massive amounts of khata
as well as in other forms of environmental damage: if they want to display their compassion spectacularly
they’ll often do this practice of buying 1,000 fish from the lowland area
the lamas are sparing those fish being eaten
But ecologists and experts know the real consequences: likely
the fish will die the next day because they can’t survive in different waters
or maybe the lamas just inadvertently introduced an invasive species that will harm other creatures
As long as Tibetans remain inclined toward this custom to make generous offerings
it’ll be difficult to change these behaviors
there are efforts to spread the word about health risks and harm
Health worker Chospal Zangpo talks about how burning khata creates a dioxin
regarded by the WHO as one of the leading causes of cancer
He has a very influential WeChat account that reaches at least half a million people
People are starting to raise their concerns
because the silence surrounding these issues has contributed to their violence
Buddhist teachers should play a more active role in raising awareness since their words carry more weight than anyone else’s
they are often complicit in the sense that they welcome the thousands of khata being offered to them
Monasteries have yet to come up with a good system of reusing khata; they end up just dumping them
I was born and raised in a Tibetan nomadic family
I quickly realized how much I took for granted
I need to find a way to make the familiar strange.” Looking at khata is that kind of exercise
Many of my anthropology students come from different cultural backgrounds
I stress that we don’t need to go all the way to some far-flung area: we can do research in our own communities
In my academic work, I’m indebted to books like Buddhism and Waste
people looking at Tibet tend to privilege the texts—obviously
I made a film about khata because I want to explore this privileging of text over other mediums in academia
I really did think that a film was an apt way to hint at how impossible it is to pinpoint the precise cultural meaning of khata
Showing them—rather than relying solely on the words of your interviewees
or quoting a Tibetan text—felt like a powerful way to get at what they mean
Khata capture a wide range of human experiences: gratitude
the power of khata comes from the fact that we can’t arrive at a simple definition
