German Champion had looked set for glory after attacking just outside the flamme rouge on the 12km closing climb, but Nys sped past in the dying metres to take the win as Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) came through for second ahead of Buchmann Nys now takes over the GC lead of the five-day race ahead of the hilltop finish at Etyek on stage and a challenging hilly final day featuring three second-category climbs on Sunday while Buchmann lies in third at six seconds I came here for the stage of tomorrow and the last day," Nys said after his win "Today we just wanted to test the legs and see where we can end I didn't really know how to react after the first two easy stages I found the perfect legs to make it happen The last 500 meters kicked really steep so I just knew I had to save something for one big shot in the end It looked like we were not closing in on Buchmann but then in the end I went all out and we came fast from behind The GC battle expected to unfold on the queen stage of the race only came late on the day’s final climb which saw riders battle up an average gradient of 5.6% towards the top It was Bora-Hansgrohe who kicked things off with Ben Zwiehoff making a move 3.3km from the top before Buchmann took to the front soon afterwards The German team settled into a hard rhythm and centre as the select group came towards the finale It was at around 1,300 metres from the line when Buchmann decided to make his move jumping clear in an attempt to take his first win since early 2020 He quickly built a gap and looked to be racing on his way to a win and the overall lead but the chasers closed in as the finish neared who won stage 2 at last month’s Tour de Romandie sped past in the final 150 metres to deny Buchmann the win leading home Ulissi as Yannis Voisard (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) rounded out the top five further back The GC moves had come after the early break was brought back midway up the final climb of the day Astana Qazaqstan riders Michael Mørkøv and Yevgeniy Gidich had been joined in the break by Manuel Pénalver (Polti-Kometa) Balázs Rózsa (Epronex-Hungary) and Christian Bagatin (MBH Bank-Colpack-Ballan) Deweirdt managed to extend his mountain classification lead along the way but their time out front drew to a close on the final difficulty of the stage with sprinter Kristian Sbaragli (Corratec-Vini Fantini) trying a brave but doomed counter-move and Bora-Hansgrohe made the pacemaking ahead of the late GC battle though it was a rider from US team Lidl-Trek who would ride off with the big prize at the top of the mountain Results powered by FirstCycling Dani has reported from the world's top races She has interviewed many of the sport's biggest stars and her favourite races are the Giro d'Italia Marton Gyöngyösi doesn’t respond well when I bring up fascism he seems genuinely disappointed – we’ve had a good rapport throughout the interview touching lightly on his Trinity education and how his Hungarian party Repeatedly, as our interview continues, he seems shocked that I’d even raise the idea, as if there is little evidence to suggest that Jobbik – established in 2003 – has elements of the far-right bully-boy tactics now spreading across Europe with our interview taking place over the phone throughout the day as Gyöngyös juggles his daily commute a press conference and the range of meetings that afflict the lives of senior politicians He is a man who has seen the world and reaped the benefits of globalisation as comfortable in Ireland as Iraq and Afghanistan But it was in seminar rooms and among friends where he really talked you were basically encouraged to make it known and make it public and make it clash with other opinions” Gyöngyös didn’t let Trinity’s liberal politics go to his head Hungarian politics was still his bread and butter: “In the course of our diplomatic mission so I think regardless of the fact I was outside of the country I have always followed the political sense in my homeland and the Hungarian politics in Dublin.” For anyone not in the know about Hungarian politics the current government is led by Viktor Orban a man once famed for his fight against authoritarianism in Hungary in the dying days of the Soviet era he’s gained European notoriety – coining the phrase “illiberalism” and reaping the political rewards of a hardline response to Europe’s immigration crisis A lot has changed since the first Orban government “He led that type of liberal-conservative government based on Christian values where he worked in a range of big-four finance firms he looked at a Hungary that was moving beyond the shadow of the Soviet Union flying home to vote in the second round of elections when it looked like Orban would lose There is something of a scorned lover in how Gyöngyös talks about Orban a kind of never-meet-your-heroes attitude to the man he once flew home for Orban has consistently disappointed Gyöngyös “He has come to the conclusion by 2010 that actually he doesn’t need to govern the country at all” instead running a “war machine” communications office that would put Leo Varadkar to shame Gyöngyös speaks in perfectly accented English I find it hard to stop him talking about Trinity about Ireland and about the peculiarities of our politics He even manages to identify my accent – Northern Irish heavily disguised – at the opening of our interview But as good a conversationalist as Gyöngyös is it’s difficult to escape the shadow of far-right xenophobic politics that hangs over his party he admits that it’s his party that pushed Orban to the more extreme fringes of Hungarian politics Everything Orban has done with regards to migration was conceived and inspired by our programme And this is where things get complicated. Because Jobbik is a party in flux. For a party that has flirted with the trademarks of fascism – a paramilitary-style wing and anti-semitism – it has achieved remarkable success in recent years soaring up the polls and talked up as a possible contender for government Gyöngyös is quick to rebuff all suggestions of fascism when I bring them up. And while those repudiations might be sincere, there is something not quite right about them. For they come from a man whose party is trying to find an inside track to the right-wing rhetoric of Orban, trading places on a political spectrum that is becoming increasingly fractured by the day Hungary has been the outlier of European politics receiving column inches bemoaning a slide towards authoritarianism and nativism And Gyöngyös seems happy enough to keep it that way He is one of the most pragmatic politicians I have ever interviewed I can see why the skills that made him a top tax advisor also made him an excellent far-right politician his country’s corruption – he speaks with a patience that must have served him well in the complicated world of financial regulation xenophobia and violence can be explained away with reference to Hungarian history to media bias and a lack of understanding of what the Hungarian people want I watch a video on Youtube of Gyöngyös at a rally he berates the government’s support of Israel raging against the injustices committed in Palestine he called on the government to draw up a list of Jews “I think such a conflict makes it timely to tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here especially in the Hungarian parliament and the Hungarian government he does seem apologetic: “I apologised for the statement which was the statement was taken out of context and certain words were added to it which were not there” Gyöngyös denies that his words helped fan the flames of anti-semitism in Hungary I ask him if he’s willing to condemn anti-semitism and xenophobia in the party’s past said something whereby we want to draw the attention to a critical problem which others were sweeping under the carpet and the media take out of context certain phrases certain words and put labels of xenophobia in front of our names or in front of the name of the party which is so proud of dialogue and freedom of speech and whatever it is a complete shame that the majority of the media in Western Europe is busy producing propaganda.” he returns to the idea that his party is going through a transition that accusations of xenophobia and anti-semitism were simply symptoms of a party’s growing pains even political movements and individuals as well they go through a life cycle and somebody at the age of 30 thinks very differently about the world than somebody at the age of 40 Somebody in his third or fourth year of college politics thinks very differently about politics 10 years down the road” immaturity or simply electoral calculus to defend his party’s history very difficult to say what exactly a party is and what it stood for at the time and what it stands for now journalists and Jobbik’s opponents might disagree Gyöngyös told me about a debate he remembers in Trinity but kind of observing it from the side.” Today The Budapest Times The name Kékes derives from the mountain’s bluish outlook resulting in Kékestető translating as the “Bluish Top” there are various bicycle lanes within this area there is a bus service that goes directly there to accomplish this in an instant with even less effort simply drive up the well-signposted Kékestető turning-off point from the Number 24 road rolls out like a creaseless VIP carpet all the way after what were a few brief minutes of minor drive-time from ground level upwards park the car and simply walk the last few metres towards the prominent Kékestető television tower within this forested peak This guiding feature with its antenna is very noticeable from afar as it stands above all else at this very easy-going and accessible This multifunctional transmitter was built in 1981 and comes with an observational watch tower thus providing the best views of this immediate area closed at time of writing like all others due to the coronavirus situation one can also certainly find promising panoramas elsewhere within this immediate area Although almost everything in the tourist industry remains closed it’s still possible and equally pleasant to at least go to the Mátra region for a day trip regardless of plague and what’s unavailable with general facilities for a quick drive and a burst of the great outdoors there is no need to prepare too much in advance (Unless one is heading out towards the lesser known and more ambitious areas for more serious walking and climbing in the Mátra) if present-time tourist comforts are not necessarily available one can still find the occasional shop and outdoor buffets that will provide a little hot something to chase away cold spells most notably the Mátra bike lanes connect to the “Tour de Hongrie” cycle route with the reopening of museums and tourist information services and so forth overcome and be defiant – do the Mátra trails your way Take a map and persevere to achieve what will be a splendid day out regardless of all else at this even more tranquil region For those not familiar with the Mátra range be aware of surprise weather conditions and prepare well beforehand at this time of the year This was something I had forgotten from my last visit more than 10 years ago and I was unexpectedly caught out when there at the end of March But when finally proceeding upwards at Kékestető There were still slight traces of snow that added much appeal as all had long since gone from the city – until I noticed with much alarm that the temperature dial in my car had significantly dropped to minus 5 in a matter of moments I then realised my error of absent-mindedness in not preparing properly The very few other visitors were clearly better dressed and equipped than me and I felt very out of place in my springtime attire windswept and foolish for underestimating this smallish mountain and its chilly higher-altitude powers I made my way around in my thin coat and sneakers for a briefer time than hoped I recalled that in contrast to the very unchallenging route that had brought me there the Kékes within the Mátra peaks is a far more serious hiking destination in general than most others in Hungary in particular in comparison to the gentle Buda Hills the heavy and dormant cloud lifted over this immediate area the spring climate returned in all its abundance After being served warm tea and a plate of fortifying pancake rolls filled with jam at a welcoming roadside caravan serving takeaways I would have written and explored more had I been better prepared and had more time But this warm-up and re-introduction were as much as I could have hoped for on that particular day I will look forward to returning and seeing plenty more by foot or bike and really justify my next visit in a more environmentally friendly way Then deliver a more telling article soon afterwards For further information, see Kékestető – Gyöngyös-Mátra (gyongyos-matra.hu) You must be logged in to post a comment PRIVACY POLICY Marking the10th anniversary of Macao's return.Though it is small it is the most beautiful lotus in South China Eddie Dunbar has taken overall victory at the Tour of Hungary even though he lost the final stage win right on the line today who rode a fantastic final climb to the summit finish was caught and passed by 20-year-old Italian Antonio Tiberi (Trek-Segafredo) in the final 50 metres of the 184km stage to Gyöngyös-Kékestető Even deep into the last 500 metres Dunbar looked like he had the stage and the final overall in the bag while Dunbar lost the stage to the fast-finishing Tiberi And that was enough for the Irish rider to secure the GC win as Tiberi had lost time earlier this week The first four stages in the five-stage race all came down to bunch sprints It meant most of the fancied climbers started today’s final stage all equal on time; some 26 seconds down on race leader That general classification going into today’s stage meant the final climb – some 12.km with an average gradient of 5.6 per cent – was always going to decide the final general classification After the early breakaway had been caught today Bora-hansgrohe took it up on the front on the final climb with about 4.5km to go it was Ben Turner of Ineos Grenadiers who came to the front with Dunbar in his wheel Turner then did an amazing jump to split what remained of the main field to pieces and set up his 25-year-old team mate for a big attack as the finish line got nearer Dunbar jumped very hard on the final climb today with 1.9km to go after Turner had really strung out the bunch By the time Turner swung off and Dunbar attacked the group was down to just 10 or 12 riders When Dunbar attacked he opened a very big gap immediately and none of the riders left in the group was willing or able to respond to the acceleration From that point Dunbar continued to power away out front alone though Tiberi eventually put in a very big effort to try and catch Dunbar Dunbar began to look laboured in the final 500m though Tiberi had judged his effort to perfection; finishing really strongly as Dunbar tied up Tiberi just about overtook his Irish rival and beat him to the stage victory by two seconds while Dunbar’s heart was broken on the line for the stage win he still took the GC victory That is the second victory of his career after also winning the overall at Coppi e Bartali in March bold dreams and ambitious plans most of which were never completed due to financial or political reasons These structures often crumble and slowly fall into disrepair There are countless unfinished or abandoned buildings in Hungary that deserve a better fate Architectural storyteller Dávid Zubreczki has compiled a collection of such structures for the new season of National Geographic’s “Abandoned Buildings” series Read the article in Hungarian on Helló Magyar: Elhagyott épületek Magyarországon: 5+1 roskadozó építmény, amit egyszer látnod kell The gigantic torso of the Hungarian Church of the Holy Land (Magyar Szentföld-templom) in Veszprém has been abandoned for years in Buda Designer Farkas Molnár envisioned a unique building – a massive space covered by an elliptical dome and surrounded by structures inspired by the chapels of the Holy Land Construction began in 1940 but was halted by the war The Communist regime halted further work in 1949 the unfinished building was converted into a warehouse for the Municipal Archives the slender concrete columns and the oval ring that circles the top remain dominant features Although the Franciscan Order now owns the structure and ideas for its reuse surface regularly This curious structure is located at the end of Pogánytorony Street There is perhaps no other tower in Budapest with such an unusual purpose The hexagonal structure was erected by the Turanists in 1935 as a cultic site for what they believed to be an ancient Hungarian religion the Horthy regime did not look favourably upon the anti-Christian society the abandoned building was used as an anti-aircraft observation tower its status is somewhat controversial: the municipality wishes to develop it as a tourist destination but no agreement has yet been reached with the owner its style is less reminiscent of “socreal” and more akin to northern European lighthouses The building was intended to function as a water tower it was thought to be the largest sundial in Europe The tower’s shadow was meant to cast across the lines of its fence sculptors Géza Nagy and László Molnár carved the 12 signs of the zodiac Despite the care and precision with which it was built this nationally protected industrial monument has not been abandoned no suitable function has been found for it The tragic events of the twentieth century left Hungary with many empty synagogues the largest of which is the Gyöngyös Synagogue designed by the renowned Jewish architect Lipót Baumhorn the town’s Jewish population had dwindled the synagogue is still remembered as “the most beautiful furniture store in the country” The synagogue has been vacant for many years and while its renovation has been frequently discussed a small step forward was taken: 42 waste containers were reportedly removed from the site Read also: Abandoned for eternity: 5 spooky places in Hungary – PHOTOS, VIDEOS Karancs Hotel in Salgótarján is perhaps the most iconic it was the first modern structure in the county seat Its facilities and services rivalled those of hotels in the capital and around Lake Balaton Its rooftop boasted a vast sun terrace with showers which doubled as an open-air cinema in the operate on the ground floor its 84 rooms have stood empty for over two decades the “Mátra Association’s Kékesalja Lodge” Its name (the “Mátra House”) has since become its symbol its design follows the popular form of East Asian Buddhist architecture Designer István Medgyaszay sought to revive Hungarian architectural traditions by incorporating oriental motifs Beneath its ancient form lay a modern winter the site closed after the turn of the millennium fans of organic architecture and lovers of the Mátra have been waiting in vain for it to reopen there are many impressive architectural projects The three politicians met Alexei Zhuravlev on Tuesday and are scheduled to meet the head of the Duma’s energy committee and that of its Russian-Hungarian friendship chapter
