Bridget Carleton and Brionna Jones met in the week’s closest game between UNI Győr and ZVVZ USK Praha
Žabiny Brno and Basket Landes in progressing to the second round
week 5 of EuroLeague Women wasn’t particularly memorable
as there weren’t any truly big performances
But dig a bit deeper and find that some stories began and some were put to a close—sometimes during the same game
two spots remain to be filled by the end of next week’s action
The 10 teams that already have advanced to the second round are: Basket Landes
Tango Bourges Basket clinched a spot in the next round on Tuesday. The standout constant for Bourges is Nigerian-American Amy Okonkwo. After captaining D’Tigress to their best performance in history during the Paris Olympics, the former USC and TCU player scored game-high 17 points on 62 percent shooting against Olympiacos
The Greeks remain winless in the competition and have no chance at progressing to the second round
In the other Group B game ÇBK Mersin made the most out of Žabiny’s shooting struggles (28 percent from the field)
cruising to their fifth-consecutive win in the competition
who scored over 20 points for the third time this season
Prior to the game against Praha we caught up with Bridget Carleton
who rejoined the team she played for last year
Asked about her expectations for the season in Hungary
When I am away from the game too long I get a bit antsy to play again
I am excited to be back in a familiar club
where I got a lot better last season and I am excited to build on that
My goal is always to play in the EuroLeague Women
I love playing in Hungary and in Europe and experiencing different things
I am excited to be back and excited to see what we can do this year
when she knocked down a big 3 and stole the ball in the next play to put her team up by three points
after trying to find her rhythm prior to that shot
This was the tightest contest of the week and the game could have gone either way
With Praha up by three with 30 seconds left
only to lose it again because of an unlucky bounce
who dominated the middle and finished the game with 21 points
Kristina Jorgensen had a night to rememberČTK / imago sportfotodienst / Marco WolfKristina Jorgensen was the player to watch as Györ booked their ticket for the Final Four of the Women's Champions League thanks to a 29-22 22 win against Ludwigsburg in the second leg of their Champions league quarter-final
The Danish international scored more than twice as many goals as any other player in the match and played a crucial role in the team's 29-22 victory
The Hungarian outfit won the first leg against the Germans 25-24, and left no doubt of the outcome in the second leg thanks to an outstanding performance by Kristina Jorgensen.
Kristina Jorgensen ended up scoring nine goals in 12 attempts in the quarter-finals - some of them from penalties - and was the clear leading goal scorer
The five second-highest scorers each scored four goals
Györ did not impress in the two legs of the quarter-finals from an attacking standpoint, but their defence – the top so far in the EHF Champions League Women this season - was once again on the top of the game, conceding only 46 goals in 120 minutes against HB Ludwigsburg
Nine players scored at least one goal for Györ
which used the same recipe as they did throughout the whole season
one shy of the record of 15 wins in a season
a record which will they surpass provided they win the title this season
This was also the last match as coach for Ludwigsburg for Jakob Vestergaard, the mastermind of last season’s fantastic run, which saw the German champions finish as runners-up, as Vestergaard will take over the reigns at Odense
the first team to qualify for the Final Four this season

who has already made a name for herself by securing the 2024 Cadet World Championship title in the -70kg category
Competing alongside her is Arkadii SAMOILOV (UKR)
the second highest ranked judoka in the event
who narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Cadet World Championships earlier this year

Hungarian powerhouse Györi Audi ETO KC returned to the EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 after almost two months and clinched a dramatic last-second 25:24 win against HB Ludwigsburg in the first leg of the quarter-finals
Györ had a direct quarter-final ticket and had to wait for their opponents to go through the play-offs
which turned out to be their well known rivals from the last season's final
In an exciting match where it could have gone either way
Györ took the win thanks to a last-second penalty goal from Kristina Jörgensen
HB Ludwigsburg (GER) vs Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) 24:25 (14:16)

Some teams just know how to win the first leg of a quarter-final
staying unbeaten in the opening away match of the EHF Champions League Women quarterfinals for the seventh consecutive time
excluding the cancelled 2019/20 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic
The only time they did not win the first leg in that span was back in the 2016/17 season when they lost 31:32 to Metz
they bounced back in the return leg and qualified for the EHF FINAL4 Women
Györ once again proved they know exactly how to handle pressure
The German side gave their best to finally break the Hungarian side and kept the game tight
but just like in Budapest in 2024 and both group phase matches this season
Goalkeeper Sandra Toft once again proved why she is among the best in her position
The shot-stopper added another 15 saves to her tally
finishing the match at 40.54 per cent save efficiency and delivered crucial stops in the final moments of the game
allowing Györ to make a comeback and ultimately grab the narrow lead ahead of the duel in Hungary

The Hungarian state has received approval from the Austrian competition authority to acquire Strabag’s stake in the Győr–Sopron–Ebenfurth Railway (GySEV)
Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár announced on his Facebook page
Since Strabag has previously stated that it does not consider its stake in the railway company a strategic investment and is willing to sell it
the last obstacle has been removed for the Hungarian state to further increase its ownership in GySEV
János Lázár recalled that the Hungarian state had already been the majority owner of the company
which also has the Austrian state as a shareholder
under a contract signed by previous left-wing governments
the Austrian state retained its veto power in the company
despite the Hungarian state investing increasing amounts of money into it
while the Austrians failed to meet their capital contribution obligations
Hungarian influence in the company did not increase
Végre a helyére kerülhetnek a Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurti Vasút Zrt-ben a tulajdoni arányok és így a cég vezetése is
A cégben már eddig is többségi tulajdoni…
the national government did not accept that Hungarians would be a minority in their own company
That is why Prime Minister Viktor Orbán tasked János Lázár with addressing the situation
The minister noted that the company would remain joint
as the Austrian state would continue to be a minority shareholder
expressing his belief in all forms of Central European cooperation
Hungary will have the decisive say in the railway company
as the Hungarian state’s share will increase to 71.7 per cent with the acquisition of Strabag’s 6.13 per cent stake
the transaction is good news for all passengers and employees of the Hungarian railway
will now significantly contribute to the advancement of Hungarian State Railways (MÁV)
While the post does not disclose the price of Strabag’s share package
December media reports mentioned a 10 million euro offer

The group phase of the EHF Champions League Women is over
with four teams qualifying for the quarter-finals
after finishing on the top two places in each group
while the next four teams in each group progressed to the play-offs
The 16 participating teams were divided into two groups of eight teams each
with a balanced format seeing two Hungarian sides - Györi Audi ETO KC and FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria
and one French and one Danish side - Metz Handball and Team Esbjerg – making it into the quarter-finals
Metz Handball delivered the best performance for any side in the history of the competition since the current format was introduced
racking up the largest number of points by a single team
Metz threw off the competition with a draw against Storhamar Handball Elite
but went on to build a 13-match winning streak
becoming the second unbeaten team at the end of the group phase after Györi Audi ETO KC
yet the Hungarian side had 10 wins and four draws
one draw against Buducnost and one painful
seven-goal loss against Odense on their home court
but they proved too strong for the second-placed Team Esbjerg
for the teams finishing between the third and the sixth places
secured the play-offs berth with one match to go and clinched the fourth place with a 30:29 win against Croatian side HC Podravka Vegeta in the last match of the group phase
It was the fifth loss by a single goal for Podravka
one place ahead of the reigning EHF European League Women champions
despite their 20:24 loss against Metz Handball in the last match
Storhamar went through thanks to a loss from CS Gloria 2018 BN
which conceded their 11th loss of the season against fellow Romanian side CSM Bucuresti
as the Romanian debutants crashed out of the competition
the Danish side which is currently led by the new Norway women’s national team coach
Odense lost both matches against Esbjerg by nine goals
failing to mount a challenge for the second place
while the fourth place was clinched by Brest Bretagne Handball
which finished on a four-match winless streak
with a barren run in the middle of the group phase seeing the German side finish two points behind Brest
After Vipers Kristiansand’s retirement due to bankruptcy
the Norwegian side lose the last five matches
however the next place – the seventh one – was the one progressing to the play-offs and it was Rapid Bucuresti which delivered the goods
after a dramatic last match against Buducnost
eventually taking a point against Buducnost
with Sorina Grozav converting a penalty shot with one second to go
helping her side progress to the next phase
which would not have been possible in case of a draw
Rapid will face fellow Romanian side CSM Bucuresti
with Ludwigsburg measuring up against Krim Mercator Ljubljana
The first leg of the play-offs will take place on 22 and 23 March
while the second matches are scheduled for 29 and 30 March
It was always going to be an uphill battle for HB Ludwigsburg to make back-to-back appearances in the EHF FINAL4
as Györi Audi ETO KC secured their second win in the quarter-finals against the German side
Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) vs HB Ludwigsburg (GER) 29:22 (13:10)
Györ did not impress in the two legs of the quarter-finals from an attacking standpoint
but their defence – the top so far in the EHF Champions League Women this season - was once again on the top of the game
conceding only 46 goals in 120 minutes against HB Ludwigsburg
The reigning champions are back in the EHF FINAL4
in a fantastic display of consistency in the last decade
as the team with the largest number of trophies in the European premium competition – six – will have to add their seventh title in the last 12 seasons
This was also the last match as a coach for HB Ludwigsburg for Jakob Vestergaard
the mastermind of last season’s fantastic run
which saw the German champions finish as runners-up
as Vestergaard heads over to Odense Håndbold
the first qualified team this season to the EHF FINAL4

GYOR (EuroLeague Women 2017) – Excitement is building at CMB Cargo Uni Gyor as the club continues to freshen up its roster ahead of a return to EuroLeague Women for 2016-17
Gyor are ready to make the step back up and have decided to make a number of changes
with the likes of Serbia national team guard Tamara Radocaj
American Quianna Chaney and Lithuanian forward Monika Grigalauskyte all heading through the exit door
including Slovak Republic national team standout Zofia Hruscakova and Brianna Kiesel who played recently with WNBA franchise
where she has made a name for herself ever since bursting onto the scene as a mere 16-year-old in EuroLeague Women
the forward has developed into a leader for the Slovak Republic national team where she has regularly led her country in both scoring and rebounding
@DWingsHoops Media Day was huge fun w teammates Amanda Zahui B & Brianna Kiesel @WNBA @startelegram @sportsdfw pic.twitter.com/IyYQotoWb8
Pittsburgh graduate Kiesel played in the Israeli League last season and will make her debut in Euroleague Women
The pair will be joined by another new arrival in Marta Palenikova
who played in EuroCup Women last season with Piestanske Cajky
She played alongside her compatriot Hruscakova at EuroBasket Women 2015
Meanwhile Hungary national team player Zsofia Simon will make an emotional return to the club having been part of the successful side of 2012 which delivered domestic honours
Although some changes have been made to the spine of the team in vital positions
a sizeable dose of continuity is assured via the re-signing of captain Anna Lakloth and a number of other Hungarian players in Zsofia Varga
The club also celebrated agreeing to an extension with American Cyesha Goree who was their main source of offensive joy during 2015-16
The RS GT Performance has more than 900 horsepower available and can make quick work of the Autobahn.Mark Richardson/The Globe and Mail
It seems ironic to be driving to the world’s largest engine manufacturing plant in an all-electric car
Both are great for making distance on the Autobahn
but then I took the GT on the narrow road to the top of Austria’s Postalm Winterpark
The GT was too wide and powerful for making the most of the twisting mountain road
and the many hikers looked on the quarter-million-dollar supercar with semi-curious derision
“But it’s all-electric!” I wanted to call out
just south of Audi’s home town in Ingolstadt
to visit the Hungarian assembly plant and see for myself how the company has updated its operations there
I’d already recharged once at an Audi-branded EV station in Salzburg
where I swapped the SQ6 SUV for the GT coupe
Two of the four chargers weren’t working properly
the electrons only flowed at a fraction of the car’s potential
The GT should be able to suck back its charge at up to 320 kilowatts but the Audi station
I unplugged before it would start to slow down with its battery 80 per cent full
The GT proved too wide and powerful for the narrow road to the top of Austria’s Postalm Winterpark.Mark Richardson/The Globe and Mail
There were two more stops to make before reaching Vienna
each several hundred kilometres apart along glorious valley roads
and leaving plenty of battery power in reserve to drive on to the Gyor plant
with six fast chargers tucked around the isolated back of a supermarket
all six were already in use when I rolled in
It took a half-hour wait before a 125-kilowatt charger became available
made vacant by a Fiat e500 on a much more leisurely schedule than I was
Its driver almost seemed to sneer as he slid slowly away from the Ionity-branded charger
the prefab washroom on the edge of the site accepted credit cards to pay for entry
so I didn’t need to ask the Fiat driver to volunteer a half-euro coin for a pee
but then we often charge at home,” said a nice couple who’d driven up in a Q6 e-tron just as a Hyundai Ioniq 5 was leaving
there’s always another station not so far away
It costs about half as much to charge it as we’d pay for gas
Probably six – I couldn’t quite understand the German invectives being hurled at one of the chargers by a recently arrived Citroën driver
but I did follow their general intent and he didn’t look happy
He eyed me while I sat in the Audi and looked keen to claim my charging space before any cheeky Tesla or Renault might pull in
The charger was rated at 360 kilowatts but the car charged at no more than 111 kilowatts
I unplugged and slid slowly away toward the highway
the rest of the European electric experience was wonderful
I sat on cruise control and let the car’s sensors shift its speed to the constantly changing speed limits on the road to Hungary
Forget those forms I’d signed about taking responsibility for the driving

Gyor is not far from the Austrian border and is Hungary’s sixth-largest city
The Audi plant is the region’s biggest employer by far
accounting for 6 per cent of total exports
The country is wooing foreign governments – read
China – to become a global EV battery-making hub
so the plant might not account for as large a proportion of Hungary’s exports in coming years
the 30-year-old facility at Gyor is a behemoth
It built more than 177,000 Audi Q3s and Q3 Sportbacks last year
as well as more than 1.5 million gas and diesel engines
it built another 114,000 electric axle drive units
but the thing that stuck with me is that the entire 5.1-million-square-metre site is carbon-neutral
It takes much of its power from the near-boiling water found in subterranean reservoirs more than two kilometres beneath the city
which is pumped to the surface for conversion of its heat and then returned to deep under the earth
the solar panels that cover 160,000 square metres of roofing make up the largest rooftop solar park in Europe
And the grounds are home to more than a quarter-million bees in six distinct families
living in digitally monitored beehives that feed billions of points of data about their lives and habits back to researchers
Inside the Audi Hungaria assembly plant in Gyor
which is the world’s largest engine manufacturing plant and also makes electric motors
the massive plant has been carbon-neutral.Courtesy of manufacturer
All this helped to clear my environmental conscience on the highway back to Vienna
which would soon be decimated by my flight home to Toronto
sitting in traffic with the car doing most of the steering and throttle control
A diesel truck pulled alongside and I looked out at its gigantic wheels
“I’m saving the planet,” I mouthed at nobody in particular

The first day of the Gyor Cadet European Cup 2024 saw the host nation
claiming the top spot in the overall standings with 3 gold
some of the local young athletes shared their thoughts
SZABO Milan (Dunaharaszti Judo Club) -50kg gold medallist
This was my second European Cup ever I finished 3rd place in Koper
I was hoping to get a medal here in Gyor too
More to the story is the fact that in Koper I lost against Bulgaria’s Martinov and I had to face him in the final here
I managed to throw him for waza-ari 10 seconds prior to the contest finishing
The other fights against the French athletes were hard too
I am really pleased to have won my first ever European Cup gold medal on home soil
I am hoping to attend at more of these Cups as well as to qualify for the Europeans and Worlds
I know there is lot of work to get done for that and progress to be made but I am ready
I want to thank my coaches Illes Sandor and Ven Zoltan as they support me no matters what
KISS Viktória (BHSE Judo Club) -48kg bronze medallist
After the world championships I had mixed feelings as I wasn’t sure what is next due the injury I picked up
We have faced additional challenges as the MRI showed nothing
Despite the unknown I followed a strict regime of physiotherapy and I started to feel the improvement
I tested my back recently at the Bahrain Gymnasiade and it seemed to be ok
yet I left with mixed emotions as the person whom I lost to
I am proud to be here and been able to have fought at all
SZABO Réka (BHSE Judo Club) -52kg silver medallist
I felt like I was able to concentrate better today
I knew I would face my home patriot whom I know very well so I knew it won’t be easy at all
We agreed with my coach just to go out there and enjoy as there was nothing to lose
It is a nice finish to my cadet career and from next year it is all about growing into the junior stage
I won’t overthink it or be worried about the fact that I will be new amongst the juniors
I plan to continue to work hard and to do my best
VAS Mira (UTE Judo Club) – 52kg gold medallist
I was disappointed as I felt I have more in me
I gave it all in my preparation but I understood it is all about progressing and there is always room to improvement
With Reka we go head-to-head plenty of time
As per next year I am still a cadet and I want to bring medals home from both European and world championships
GALO Bence (UTE Judo Club) -60kg bronze medallist
I have a slight disappointment because gold was the goal but I am happy to close my cadet years with a bronze medal
I think I have done pretty well and I hope I can make an as smooth transition to the juniors as possible

The business end of the EHF Champions League Women
the premium competition for clubs in Europe
will take place in Budapest on 1 and 2 June
with four teams vying for the trophy in the EHF FINAL4
It is the 10th anniversary of the EHF FINAL4
while the semi-finals are played on Saturday
and undoubtedly the match between the Hungarian powerhouse Győri Audi ETO KC and Team Esbjerg looks to be the headline
a crucial battle between two top sides in European handball
While Győr are the team with the largest number of appearances in the EHF FINAL4
Esbjerg became the first Danish side to reach the EHF FINAL4 three times in a row
the Danish champions have never won a match so far in Budapest
Jesper Jensen’s side is set to cause issues for Győr
the 2023 IHF Female World Player of the Year and the MVP of the 2023 IHF Women’s World Championship
is the current all-time top scorer in the EHF FINAL4
currently the Netherlands’ women’s national team coach
due to the Hungarian side’s unsatisfactory results this season
despite Győr starting the EHF Champions League Women with a 11-match winning streak
This will also be a special EHF FINAL4 for Stine Bredal Oftedal
who will play her last matches at club level
before featuring at the Olympic Games for Norway and retiring from her playing career after Paris 2024
Jesper Jensen will solely focus on the Denmark women’s national team
which he helped clinch two bronze medals in the last two editions of the IHF Women’s World Championship
SG BBM Bietigheim will become the 14th team to play in the EHF FINAL4
after delivering some incredible performances throughout the season to make in the business end of the European premium competition
Bietigheim have lost seven matches in the preliminary round
but went on and eliminated two Danish sides with the same scoreline – 60:58 on aggregate against Ikast Handball in the play-offs and against Odense Handbold in the quarter-finals
who has already won the EHF Champions League Women twice with Viborg HK in 2009 and 2010
as the French champions are also aiming for their maiden place in the final in the competition
Metz have lost only three matches this season
while Bietigheim have conceded eight losses
one less than the other three participating teams in the EHF FINAL4 combined
the final census of the Hungarian population before the German occupation revealed that some 4,700 Jews lived in Győr – some 8% of the city's population
Most of them were merchants and industrialists
as well as diverse Jewish social organizations
and the Neologs also ran a vocational school
Both the photographer and his subjects were murdered in Auschwitz
Peter and Jozsef were both murdered in Auschwitz
Although Hungary was yet to be occupied by the Germans
the Jews suffered from Hungarian anti-Jewish laws
The Hungarians expelled the Jews from their places of business
stole their possessions and restricted the activities of the Jewish institutions
The Jewish community of Győr was not immune to the hardships of World War II
most of the Jewish men of the city were recruited to forced labor in the Hungarian Army Labor Battalions
Most of the Jewish men from Győr recruited for the labor battalions were sent to the Eastern Front
and the rest – with the Orthodox community
The Germans disassembled the Jewish defense efforts and ordered the Jews of Győr to establish an alternative Jewish council
which would represent a number of Jewish communities in the region
was appointed president of the regional Jewish council
the last president of the Neolog community in Győr
was appointed president of the local Jewish council
less than two months after the German occupation began
ordered the Jews of the city to move to houses in two places designated as ghettos – in the heart of the city and on the nearby island of Győrsziget
The Hungarian Interior Minister Andor Jaross objected the establishment of a ghetto in the center of the city
so the Jews were all forced to move to the Győrsziget ghetto by 31 May 1944
The ghetto was so overcrowded that the Jews had to leave their possessions outside of their apartments in the ghetto
Jews were deported to Győr from across the Győr-Moson region
thousands of people were living in the Győrsziget ghetto in such terrible overcrowding that there were 30 people on average in every room
protested to the Interior Minister at the overcrowding in the ghetto as well as the fact that Jews who had converted to Christianity were also included amongst its internees

GYOR (Hungary) - Bridget Carleton caught fire for Serco UNI Gyor to score more than any other player has in EuroLeague Women in over two decades
as she netter 41 points against KGHM BC Polkowice
The 26-year-old Canadian ace fired her team to a 91-80 success with a spectacular effort as she went 11-of-15 from the floor
erupting from long-range and sinking eight triples from just 10 attempts
Her amazing perimeter play contributed to her racking up a stellar performance efficiency valuation of 47 after also adding 6 rebounds and 4 steals
this was all about one of the most devastating shooting nights in the modern era of the competition
it was the third highest behind Lara Mandic in 2002 who dropped 42 and modern day leader Victoria Bullet who scored a jaw-dropping 48 points for T.M.C Ahena Cesena in 1996
EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 round 6 opened on Saturday afternoon with Brest Bretagne and FTC back on the winning track following their first defeats of the season in round 5
while Nykøbing Falster Håndbold staged a great comeback to clinch a 27:27 draw versus Podravka.
A second-half salvo from Brest helped the French side secure their win against Rapid
but could not prevent Krim from losing for the second time in a row

as they were thoroughly outplayed by Odense
GROUP AFTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria (HUN) vs Krim Mercator Ljubljana (SLO) 28:26 (16:14)
11 goals from Ana Gros were not enough to prevent another loss for Krim Mercator Ljubljana
in a tough battle against FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria
they jumped to the top of the group at least until Sunday
with FTC's lead never reaching more than three goals
HC Podravka Vegeta (CRO) vs Nykøbing Falster Håndbold (DEN) 27:27 (18:14)
Podravka had the chance to secure back-to-back wins for the first time in 12 seasons
leading as clear as seven goals in the first half
NFH were still down four goals at the break and the distance grew to six again early in the second period
but a nine-goal outing from line player Sofie Bardrum helped the Danish side seal their maiden point of the season
GROUP BRapid Bucuresti (ROU) vs Brest Bretagne Handball (FRA) 31:34 (14:14)
After conceding a loss against Györ in the previous round
Brest secured their fifth win of six games in 2024/25
but it was hardly their best outing of the season
The French side had a pivotal 5:1 run which turned the match on its head midway through the second half
Another run spurred by right back Anna Vyakhireva
The Russian right back scored a total of 11 goals throughout the match
the main problem for Rapid was their defence
Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) vs Odense Håndbold (DEN) 28:35 (16:18)
Györ did not lose a home match in the premium European competition between October 2015 and September 2022
the Hungarian powerhouse have found it difficult to stay immaculate
they lost at home against CSM Bucuresti and Vipers Kristiansand
Odense produced a vintage display to dish Györ yet another home loss
It was also Györ’s second-biggest home defeat in history
with the reigning champions saving some face in the final minutes after they were down by 10 goals with only a few minutes to go
Vipers Kristiansand (NOR) vs Buducnost (MNE) 32:23 (15:14)
Vipers enjoyed some of their best handball this season between the 38th and 50th minutes
The Norwegian champions went on an 8:1 run
The 8:1 run coincided with Vipers bringing on goalkeeper Katrine Lunde
who finished with 11 saves and a save rate of 55 per cent
created a two-point cushion over Rapid with what was their second win of the season
while Buducnost conceded their fifth loss in six matches and are bottom of group B
Győr hosted the third edition of the European Judo Hopes Cup and Technical Session event
Toth was proud to welcome this particular event to his home town
which has already seen much action in the judo calendar in 2024
The Győr European Judo Hopes Cup & Technical Session with Kodokan Experts was a dream come true for me just like with the whole U15 series
I truly think that the spirit of judo is present at events and weekends like this one
we show the judo community that not only the medals and the fights are important but also the education of the young judokas
This initiative and the establishment of this programme is to help the young judoka of today
whether that be in competition or if they themselves go on to become coaches
the education they receive on this technical session is a truly special and invaluable experience
did a fantastic job with the 3 Technical sessions
It was very inspiring to watch them work so well and effortlessly with all the children as well as our EJU colleagues
I hope this initiative will be more popular in the upcoming years and it will also be useful for the coaches in many ways
the referees will benefit most from these sessions since our goal here is to teach clean techniques
This way it will be much easier to filter out bad and harmful actions
This can be only achieved through proper education
which is highly supported by the European Judo Union
I was pleasantly surprised by the judokas of this age category
they were incredibly determined and well-prepared
Some of them even rival their older counterparts in this sense
I hope to see many events like this in the future
The city of Győr in Hungary is set to host the 4th International Table Tennis Competition known as the “Cup of Hopes ” at the Club Aréna
Scheduled for October 10-13 2024 this event will see young table tennis talents from around the world compete in various age groups including U11 U12 U13 and U15 for both boys and girls
The Cup of Hopes has grown in popularity since its inception
The previous edition held in April was a resounding success attracting 100 competitors from seven different countries
This year’s competition promises to build on that success offering a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and gain international experience
The European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) is the governing body of the sport of table tennis in Europe
and is the only authority recognized for this purpose by the International Table Tennis Federation
The ETTU deals with all matters relating to table tennis at a European level
including the development and promotion of the sport in the territories controlled by its 58 member associations
and the organization of continental table tennis competitions
Team Esbjerg won the all-Danish duel in the EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 Match of the Week with an excellent performance by Henny Reistad and left Odense Håndbold without a direct quarter-final spot
Esbjerg were confident from start to finish
thus securing at least second spot in the group B
The rematch of last season’s final did not bring much excitement as Györi Audi ETO KC were straightforward against HB Ludwigsburg
grabbing a quarter-final place with a 32:19 win
CSM Bucuresti secured their third position in the final standings of Group A with a 32:21 win against Storhamar Handball Elite
Storhamar Handball Elite (NOR) vs CSM Bucuresti (ROU) 21:32 (11:14)
Storhamar missed an opportunity to seal their play-offs spot as CSM Bucuresti delivered a convincing away performance
The opening 25 minutes saw a tight battle where both sides had a hold on the lead
CSM began to assert control and powered ahead with the help of Crina Pintea
A late first-half surge saw the Romanian side grab a three-goal lead
which further expanded to seven early in the second half
Despite Storhamar's backcourt efforts to mount a comeback
they could not find a solution for a remarkable Evelina Eriksson between CSM's posts
who racked up 10 saves at an incredible 53 per cent save efficiency
their fourth consecutive in the competition
cemented CSM to a third-place finish in group A
while Storhamar will try to secure their progression in the last round as the contest between them and CS Gloria 2018 BN goes on
MOTW: Odense Håndbold (DEN) vs Team Esbjerg (DEN) 23:32 (11:16)
In a direct battle for second place in the group
Esbjerg managed to beat Odense for the second time this season
again by a nine goal difference and secured a quarter-final spot
Once again the combination of competition's top scorer Henny Reistad and the goalkeeper and MVP of the EHF EURO 2024
An early 4-0 run saw Esbjerg in a good position as Odense struggled defensively
Odense managed to narrow the gap by half-time as line player Maren Aardahl led the charge
but Esbjerg quickly came back up and galloped to a 20:13 lead mid second half
Esbjerg celebrated another convincing victory against a well-known rival
avenging their 24:33 defeat from four days before in the domestic league
Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) vs HB Ludwigsburg (GER) 32:19 (17:8)
Györ confirmed their quarter-final berth after stopping Ludwigsburg's five-match unbeaten run with a dominant win
Ludwigsburg managed to score just three goals in the first 18 minutes
which proved this would be a straightforward win for the home side
They found their attacking rhythm near the end of the first half and Johanna Bundsen also gave her share later on
but it was already too late to make anything of it
who was at 84 per cent at one point in the first 30 minutes
ensured there was no doubt about Györ's superiority in this game
The EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 round 3 threw off with five exciting clashes
Krim Mercator grabbed their third win in a row as their back court players were almost unstoppable against CS Gloria 2018 BN
Buducnost were close to celebrating in Denmark as they made Odense Håndbold sweat
but the Danish side showed better focus in crunch time
Brest made the biggest comeback of the day and defeated Esbjerg in the closing minutes
Györi Audi ETO KC joined them in a perfect run following a clear win against Vipers
while CSM avoided a defeat against Podravka Vegeta with the help of their star player Cristina Neagu and goalkeeper Gabriela Moreschi
CS Gloria 2018 BN (ROU) vs Krim Mercator Ljubljana (SLO) 30:35 (19:20)
Krim Mercator are continuing their dream start to the season and made their fans — who travelled all the way to Bistrita — happy
but Tjaša Stanko and Ana Gros were Krim's fulcrum in creating a lead in the first half
Gloria's centre back Valeriia Kirdiasheva netted seven times in those 30 minutes
keeping it tight in Romania in a high-scoring first half
Goalkeepers on both sides also had their say
but in a Barbara Arenhart versus Ivana Kapitanovic battle
the Brazilian international came on top and pushed Krim towards a third win in a row
HC Podravka Vegeta (CRO) vs CSM Bucuresti (ROU) 28:29 (10:14)
After being defeated by Krim Mercator Ljubljana and FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria
CSM Bucuresti inflicted yet another loss on the Croatian side
Podravka showed they will not be easily defeated in front of their fans
Podravka held the lead only once in the game
and from that moment on it was Bucuresti's game
Goalkeeper Gabriela Moreschi had another good day at the office
saving seven shots at 41 per cent save efficiency in the first half — and she saved CSM in the end
they equalised three minutes before the end
with the storming performances of Matea Pletikosic
Andrea Šimara and goalkeeper Antonia Tucakovic
Odense Håndbold (DEN) vs Buducnost (MNE) 31:29 (13:12)
Odense Håndbold kept their home court unbeaten following a small comeback and a hard-fought win against Buducnost
The Montenegrin side capped off their best performance of the season losing only by two
Even though Odense had an early three-goal lead
Buducnost never let go and quickly punished the opponents' mistakes
Boosted by Armelle Attingré's 66 per cent save efficiency in the early moments of the second half
Buducnost shifted the momentum and got to a three-goal lead (20:17)
but until the final buzzer the teams were mostly in deadlock
Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) vs Vipers Kristiansand (NOR) 27:22 (14:9)
Györi Audi ETO KC joined Brest at the top of the table as the unbeaten teams in group B
Vipers' Silje Solberg-Oesthassel had a good start between the posts against her former teammates
boosting 39 per cent save efficiency in the first 30 minutes
but her effort was not awarded in the attack
Györ imposed their rhythm and were efficient from almost every position
They were giving just enough to keep the lead and kept Vipers at a safe distance
Sandra Toft matched her well-known friend across the court
as they both finished the game with 16 saves
Brest Bretagne Handball (FRA) vs Team Esbjerg (DEN) 33:32 (16:19)
The last-moment comeback saw Brest keep their winning streak and made Team Esbjerg leave France disappointed
leading by six despite being without Nora Mørk
Brest kept pouncing and closed the gap with the help of right back Anna Vyakhireva
Every time Esbjerg would make another break
Brest bounced back — mostly building on Katharina Filter's saves
Juliette Faure took the most of Filter's saves and netted two in a row
Hungarian powerhouse Györi Audi ETO KC secured their sixth title in the EHF Champions League Women
after clinching two wins in the EHF FINAL4
which took place in Budapest on 1 and 2 June
the most decorated team in the history of the competition
with some excellent performances against Team Esbjerg in the semi-finals and SG BBM Bietigheim in the big final
as Stine Bredal Oftedal was named the MVP of the EHF FINAL4 in the last club match of her career
Four teams lined up at the start of the competition
the best four teams remaining after a lengthy season
which saw 18.500 spectators present at the final
Györi Audi ETO KC delivered two excellent performances to clinch their sixth title
it was a 24:23 win in the semi-final against Team Esbjerg
where the Hungarian side dominated in the second half
only to see their lead cut at the end of the match
with the 2022 IHF World Female Player of the Year
stopping a last-second shot from Esbjerg’s left wing Sanna Solberg-Isaksen
favourites Metz Handball lost their footing against SG BBM Bietigheim
as the dark horses clinched a fantastic 36:29 win
to become the first German side ever to secure a place in the final of the EHF Champions League Women
at their first appearance at the EHF FINAL4
surprised the French side with their excellent defence and pacy fast breaks
and became the first team to ever reach the final of the European premium competition after previously conceding eight losses on the way to the last act
Bietigheim were no match for Györi Audi ETO KC
one that they never relinquished until the end
the MVP of the 2021 IHF Women’s World Championship
and right back Ana Gros each scored six goals
Györ built an impressive seven-goal lead in the second half
on the back of a fantastic performance from Norwegian goalkeeper Silje Solberg-Osthassel
which had 16 saves for a 42.1 per cent saving efficiency
which featured in the EHF FINAL4 for the ninth time in 10 editions
matched the largest ever win in the last act of the competition
to secure a 30:24 and their sixth title in the European premium competition
with the closest being Hypo Niederösterreich with four titles and Viborg HK
before heading to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with Norway
centre back Stine Bredal Oftedal was named the MVP of the EHF FINAL4
after scoring three goals in the match against Esbjerg and delivering six assists in the match against Bietigheim
“I think I have managed to keep the emotions under wraps in the first match
As well in the second one against Bietigheim
when it was clear that we were going to win
The bronze medal match was won by Team Esbjerg
as the Danish side had their best ever finish in the competition
also winning their maiden match in the EHF FINAL4
the EHF Champions League Women is finally back this weekend
but only four teams can secure tickets to the EHF FINAL4 and only one can win the title
Analysing the transfers of the summer and the rosters of the teams
we have ranked the teams according to expectations for the season — remember
aiming to return to the EHF FINAL4 for the first time in four years
did great on the transfer market and secured some interesting players
who worked as assistant coach at Györi Audi ETO KC
Among those is the top scorer of the previous season
who netted 113 goals for Vipers Kristiansand in 2023/24
Other new arrivals include centre back Meline Nocandy
who showed brilliance at the Paris 2024 Games
while line player Oriane Ondono was also part of the France team that won the Olympic silver medal
There will be some growing pains for Brest
but the French side can deliver some good performances
And Tervel herself is a defensive specialist
which is crucial in the EHF Champions League Women
Vipers’ reign at the top of the EHF Champions League Women ended last season
after three consecutive titles for the Norwegian side
A turbulent season saw the Norwegian powerhouse miss out on a place at the EHF FINAL4
as they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by the eventual title winners
but now Vipers look to bounce back and aim to at least make the cut for Budapest
The only problem is that they lost 10 players
whom they will face in the first match of the new season
Vipers compensated by bringing in some experienced players
like backs Carin Strömberg and Larissa Nüsser
Ushering in Silje Solberg-Østhassel is a big plus
creating the perfect pair of goalkeepers as she joins her Norway teammate Katrine Lunde
after the two won the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games
But will Vipers have what it takes to secure a place among the top teams in the competition so far
the German champions were the surprise package last season
when they made it to the EHF FINAL4 for the first time and finished as runners-up
but they are an experienced team that can deliver good performances in the knockout matches under the guidance of coach Jakob Vestergaard
so long as they make it out of the group phase unscathed
It is difficult to see how the losses of Dutch pair Kelly Dulfer and Inger Smits
Swedish pair Johanna Bundsen and Jenny Carlson will definitely improve Ludwigsburg
while Guro Nestaker and Viola Leuchter can add another dimension to the back line
Metz saw eight players come in and eight players depart
with several stalwarts that helped the side reach their second EHF FINAL4 last season leaving
Losing four key players in goalkeeper Hatadou Sako and backs Alina Grijseels
Kristina Jørgensen and Louise Burgaard has definitely hampered Metz’s chances of repeating their trip to Budapest
but Emmanuel Mayonnade’s side has always been a team that is hard to beat
Some excellent young back-court talent has been brought in
Petra Vamos and 2023 IHF Young Player of the Year Léna Grandveau joining the French champions
as well as veteran centre back Allison Pineau
who can bring a bit of leadership and experience
right back Laura Flippes is also back at Metz
as she can score plenty of goals and also be a crucial defender
The Romanian champions have been somewhat of an enigma since 2018/19
making the quarter-finals each time but failing to return to the EHF FINAL4 in Budapest
CSM could not deliver their best performance in the crucial parts of the season
but the hope now is that the EHF FINAL4 is closer than ever
With the second all-time top scorer in the premium European competition
CSM know the window of opportunity for the left back is shutting and they will aim to enhance their chances of a big success this season
Yet there has been plenty of movement in the roster
There has also been a change on the coaching side
with Adrian Vasile leaving and being replaced by Helle Thomsen
having led the team for a few months in the 2017/18 season
which had the Hungarian champions on the brink of elimination in the group phase
saw FTC go back to the drawing board and pursue an aggressive summer on the transfer market
They brought in some much-needed reinforcements that will surely improve the chances in 2024/25
Coach Allan Heine remained in his position after winning the Hungarian league last season and will have more power at his disposal
with the arrival of Russian backs Valeriia Maslova and Daria Dmitrieva — one of the most consistent scorers in the EHF Champions League Women in the past years
Glauser will reinforce the goalkeeping department
after a fantastic display at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
FTC look to be one of the teams to beat this season
The Danish champions made the EHF FINAL4 for the last three editions
but only secured their first win on the pinnacle weekend in last season’s 3/4 placement match
they still have a stellar line-up and are one of the teams this did not overhaul their roster
with just three players leaving and three coming in
The biggest change was in the coaching department
as Jesper Jensen left after seven years in charge
He was replaced by another experienced coach in Tomas Axnér
which will probably not impact the team too much
With four gold medallists from the 2024 Olympic Games — including backs Henny Reistad and Nora Mørk — as well as five bronze medallists with Denmark in the squad
Esbjerg look set to make a fourth consecutive trip to Budapest
But there are still questions about their depth
with any injury having the potential to derail their campaign
Winning the sixth Champions League title last season was a huge relief for Györ
who joined the Hungarian side in March 2024
has retained his position and aims to make it back-to-back trophies this season
It has been an extremely busy transfer season for Györ
who retired from handball after the Olympics
Players like Ana Gros and Line Haugsted will also be missed
Györ look like the team to beat once again
with a strong core on both sides of the ball and players that can decide a match by themselves
The next edition of the European Judo Hopes Cup & Technical Session Kodokan Experts will take place in Győr from 1st – 2nd June
This is the third edition of this event which had proven to be a great success
The Olimpiai Sportpark – Olympic Sportpark will see Olympic silver medallist
Rusty Orujov inspiring the next generation alongside Kodokan expert
The European Hopes Judo Cup and Kodokan Technical Seminar is open for clubs from all EJU/IJF Member Federations
The participants compete for their club (not for the Federation) and are entered by the club
The participants may be a different nationality than the NF registering them
Over 200 judoka from 16 countries and 72 judo clubs are heading to the northwest of Hungary for an enjoyable weekend with the gentle way
The city of Győr was awarded the European Judo City title at the beginning of the year
Győr has once again demonstrated its suitability for the accolade
Attention: The schedule may be modified according to total number of entries and circumstances of competition.`* The start time will be confirmed once the final number of athletes is known.

CommentEditors’ note: The “Life in” series provides readers a window into daily life in different places around the world by sharing the stories of women living abroad
Sarah Berta-Somogyi moved to Hungary 13 years ago to teach English
She met her husband in Hungary and together they're raising their three daughters in Győr
and then I went to Concordia University Irvine
I studied English and education in college
and then I got a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction
I was teaching students English as a foreign language
I thought I would end up teaching English literature and composition
but teaching English as a foreign language actually fits really well with my skill set
Did you move to Hungary for that teaching job?I came here as a missionary through the Lutheran Church
because they have a partnership with this particular school in Hungary
The church sent missionary teachers to the school who stayed for one to two years
I am the sixth missionary teacher in this school
I thought I would be here for one to two years
as part of an English Bible camp program run by my school
Being here definitely changed my perspective
because it was really my first time being abroad
I realized that the world is much bigger than America
Bishop's Castle in Győr
It’s the sixth biggest city in Hungary with a population of about 128,000
It’s in the northwest part of the country
One of my first impressions was that as you walk down the streets
I think things are changing a little bit because of Western influence
but that was very strange when I first moved here
It’s in the Finno-Ugric language family
which means it’s apparently related to Finnish in some grammatical structures
there’s no way you will understand Hungarian
I had a colleague who taught me some basic grammar and vocabulary for about six months
I learned just by hearing it and going out and about in the city
I always thought I was bad at learning languages
It turns out I just didn’t have the opportunity
A colleague teaching Sarah to make Lángos
One of the hardest things was actually that lots of things are really similar
I could be just going along and everything’s fine and then all of a sudden
I’d run into something completely different from American culture
in Hungarian there’s an informal “you” and a formal “you.” If you don’t know somebody or somebody is older than you
Since we don’t have something similar in English
There are lots of other smaller differences
people are going to look at you like you are crazy and tell you that you’re going to get sick because your hair is wet
The other thing I was often told is that you have to cover your kidneys or you’re going to get sick
there’s no ice in your drink and no free refills
And the currency is different; the currency here is the “forint.” Now
there are about three hundred forint to a dollar
it feels ridiculous when you buy something for a thousand forint
They’re just little things you have to get used to
I really like that it’s a very family-oriented place
There are policies designed to support and incentivize families
is not 100 percent paid for all those years
The percent of your salary that you get paid decreases
Your job has to take you back at the end of your leave
There are also tax breaks for families and programs where you can apply for money to do some renovations on your house or change your current vehicle to a bigger one
Your children were born and have lived their whole lives in Hungary
What has the experience been like raising them in a country different from the country in which you grew up in
Do you at all feel like they have a different cultural background than you?We kind of make it up as we go along because it is a new experience
I also think in some cases it’s good because there are some parts of American culture I don’t really want to pass down to them
They’ve also visited the United States
so they have some personal experience of life there
And they love when I tell them stories about when I was growing up
about what life was like for me or what I did when I was in school
I think that also teaches them a little bit about life in the States
And they have good relationships with my family
And we do have some American friends here as well
I speak English to them and my husband speaks Hungarian to them and they go to school in Hungarian
When you come back to the United States now
is it like coming home or more like visiting a foreign country? There are parts of it that are definitely foreign feeling
like walking into a huge store like Target (though we love Target!)
I feel a bit overwhelmed by the massiveness of it
And it’s a little bit more stressful
but that’s also just because we’re traveling
I feel most at home in America when I’m with my family
But there are definitely some things which I forget about that kind of throw me for a loop
If I’m in a group of people or even walking anywhere
I feel like the noise level is just really high compared to a similar situation in Hungary
when I’ve hosted some groups of Americans coming here
I have a hard time sometimes because of the level of the noise
they’re not really going to smile at you
the Hungarians are open to talking about pretty much anything
There are not a lot of taboo subjects once you know somebody
I think it’s kind of the opposite in the United States: it’s easy to get to know somebody on a surface level
but if you really want to get to know somebody and talk about everything
it’s going to be much more difficult
even if it’s obvious that you disagree with them or that they disagree with you
You can generally have a conversation where both people will listen to the other side
living here has maybe made me a bit more open-minded
We had our big shutdown in March and April of last year
But I didn’t go out with the girls for at least a month
My city is not the most exciting city for tourism
but it is one of those places where you can go and just kind of chill
if you’re the type of person who is all about seeing all the things and the sights
Győr might not be the best place to visit
But if you want to have a nice relaxing weekend where you learn about history and see some nice baroque and a little bit of Roman architecture
and walk on winding cobblestone streets it is ideal
with parts of it dating back to the thirteenth century
It has a lookout tower you can go up in for a bird’s eye view of the city
There is also a museum there which is very informative
About 20 kilometers away is Pannonhalma Archabbey
It’s another really fantastic place to visit
and that’s where you’re going to find a lot of tourist sites: you have the Fisherman’s Bastion
Széchenyi Chain Bridge across the Danube
There’s also the Central Market which has a lot of food stalls
Finally, if you’re planning to visit Hungary, it’s worth studying a bit of history. Because to understand Hungary and this part of the world in general, it’s really helpful to know at least some of the country’s history, especially its modern history related to its life under communism, what happened at the end of communism, and what’s happened since then.
► CAR visits the world’s largest car engine factory► Audi’s Hungary facility is in the middle of an electrification shift► We ‘help’ build an electric motor explore inside
Hungary is the largest engine factory in the world
The plant is crucial to the brand and the VW Group – one that has
produced more than 45 million engines and counting
It’s built everything from dinky three-cylinders to beefy diesel V6s
warbling five-cylinders and the Audi R8’s screaming V10
The plant is so large that it has become one of Hungary’s biggest employers and is its largest exporter
the Gyor plant has found itself right at the centre of Audi’s and the VW Group’s shift towards electrification
‘After the production of combustion engines
in recent years we have embarked on the path of e-transformation,’ Peter Will
member of the board for powertrain production at Audi Hungaria
‘Our goal is to be a part of and a strong player in the transformation of Audi.’
It’s here we learn just how complicated building an e-motor is; the production process is arguably quite similar (and as complex) as manufacturing a combustion engine
In a permanent magnet electric motor used in the Q6 e-Tron
there are 226 ‘hairpins’ in the stator and 216 welding points
While e-motors are designed to use far fewer components than combustion engines
the myth that an electric car has ‘just one moving part’ is just that – a myth
The e-motor plant works a lot like an engine factory does; units come down a line with each part being added one at a time in supremely efficient harmony
with each motor being tested for noise and vibration before it’s ever sent towards a car in the process of being built
designed to get employees up to speed on the parts that require them to be hands-on
We are guided through some of the process by the training team
led by Zoltán Erdödi – a ‘try-out’ engineer who works with employees on pre-series production projects to get them up to speed building new models or engines
We’re instructed to help install an oil pump and reservoir system into an electric motor for the Q6 e-Tron
But you can rest easy – it’s just a training mule
and this electric motor won’t end up in a production car
I’m not sure I’d enjoy the impending lawsuit if it ever fell apart
only a week after we had visited the Gyor facility
Audi published its Q3 2024 results on 5 November
with large drops in operating profit and reductions in deliveries in Europe
the USA and China respectively – even if the company says it will return to better profitability with new model lines like A5 and A6 coming on stream
In a response to shifting trends and wider competition
Audi has already announced a shaping up of its business at the top company level
The aim is to reduce management bloat and speed up the development of new models
with Will saying the Hungary facility has a big role to play
adding that the facility also provides a huge amount of technical development for the Group
‘We have a real impact at an early stage [in the development of new models] through our technology centres here,’ adds Will (pictured below)
The Gyor plant’s strategy of working on different projects at once seems to be working
Slightly relaxed strategies regarding the pace of electrification and Audi’s renewed focus on its new
hyper-efficient ‘Premium Platform Combustion’ cars could see Hungary remain a crucial plant
and the fact that it’s not got all its eggs in the electrification basket – unlike the Brussels factory – has meant it’s seemingly not a target for layoffs or closures
‘The e-mobility transition is not new to us,’ says Will
‘The company started making electric motors in 2018 and
more than 600,000 electric motors have been manufactured in Gyor
Series production of PPE drive units started in 2023
and the company is preparing for the next generation of e-drives.’
That next generation will be the units powering cars running on the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) architecture
meaning Gyor’s place in the world seems secure
While the Audi brand and wider VW Group are experiencing a structural earthquake
Gyor seems to only be feeling light tremors

Day three of the 2023 Gyor Open brought two additional Olympic qualifiers to the potential Hungarian roster for Paris 2024
26-year-old Dalma Sebestyen got it done in the women’s 200m IM
That dipped under the World Aquatics Olympic Qualification Time of 2:11.47
she picked the right time to establish a new lifetime best
Her result this evening overtook her previous career-quickest of 2:11.48 logged at April’s Hungarian National Championships
Her time also obliterated the mark of 2:13.32 produced to place 13th in this event at this year’s World Championships
The men’s 100m backstroke brought about the 2nd qualifier, as Adam Jaszo touched in a gold medal-worthy time of 53.35
That cleared the OQT of 53.74 and also erased the 21-year-old’s previous personal best of 54.18 from April
giving Jaszo his first-ever sub-54-second result
Although Arizona State’s Zalan Sarkany notched a Paris-worthy time of 14:53.19 in the men’s 1500m free on night one
Tonight Sarkany still topped the podium in the sole sub-3:52 result of the field
but his time of 3:47.91 fell just over a second outside the 3:46.78 Paris QT
Boglarka Kapas also missed the mark in the women’s 400m free
She needed to meet 4:07.90 to punch her ticket
There are still additional qualification opportunities
including the Hungarian World Championship Trials which will most likely be taking place in April
Additional winners on the evening included Anastasiya Kuliashova of Belarus who beat teammate Anastasia Shkurdai in the women’s 50m fly
The former touched in 26.93 to the latter’s 26.96
Adam Halas produced a time of 24.78 to top the men’s 50m fly podium

A deep dive into Bridget Carleton’s 41-point game
effort and energy involved to make the event truly special
we take a deep dive into Bridget Carleton’s 41-point game on Jan
between Serco UNI Győr and KGHM BC Polkowice
to show what needed to happen for the Canadian athlete to make European basketball history
it’s inhabited by a bit over 100,000 people and home to 2023 Hungarian women’s basketball vice-champions
whose fresh ideas spring up against the backdrop of historical architecture
The baroque old town was as beautiful as ever
the Rába River reflected the lightly lit Carmelite church before joining the Danube and becoming part of the second-longest river in Europe
While the Volga is known for its singular devotion and exclusivity to Russia
which makes it a true embodiment of European solidarity
acknowledgement and acceptance of different cultures and histories—singular yet ordinary
sacrifice their individuality for the sake of taking part in something bigger than themselves
That’s the difference between individuality and individualism
the latter being a negative characteristic
socially scrutinized as the egotistical push to be better than others
the sole Canadian player for Serco UNI Győr
learned to distinguish between the two at an early age from her mother
“She is the main reason why I wanted to play basketball
I knew from a young age what she was able to do through the sport
She represented Team Ontario and got a Division II scholarship in Michigan
so I knew what was possible thanks to basketball,” says Carleton
When Carrie Carleton was the head coach at John McGregor Secondary School in Chatham
would come to the gym and watch in awe as she was giving directions to her players
they would try to recreate what they saw in their backyard
“My parents threw us into all kinds of sports
The sisters and their parents remain competitive
regardless of what they’re participating in
but they want to beat their rivals—even when they are bound to them by blood and will have dinner together in an hour

Carleton had the same mindset as she entered the court of University Hall of Győr
over 4,600 miles from the place she was born
superior to hers and headlined by Brianna Fraser
blue-collar Polkowice beat Carleton’s Győr in their first meeting of the 2023-24 EuroLeague Women competition by 10 points
who had yet to make a return following the arm injury which kept her away from action for over a year
Apart from besting Győr in a direct duel, Polkowice were 6-5 at this stage of the EuroLeague Women regular season, and a win against the Hungarians would make them almost certain to progress to the quarterfinals. Divided into two groups, the 16 best teams on the continent are playing head-to-head matches
and half of them are eliminated from the competition before the quarterfinals
Carleton’s team was among those already on the outs
There’s a history of friendship between Hungary and Poland
which is recognized through a big banner behind one of the baskets
was that the leading players on both teams were neither Hungarian nor Polish
There was no way Carleton and her teammates were going to let Polkowice get an easy win
She’s genetically inclined to stay competitive
hugs and small gifts for the Polish vice-champions
Carleton stole the ball after Polkowice’s Weronika Gajda was trying to save it from leaving the court
I only asked her if she would rebound for me
It was a good environment and I’m thankful for that,” Carleton recalls
just being in the gym with my mom and shooting the ball.”
Her parents never pushed her to do anything
When her sisters stepped away from basketball
just as they were fine with her continuing to play
And whenever she wanted her help or advice
but she always does that in a conversational manner,” says Carleton
Her older and younger sister are there for her too
jokingly downplaying whenever she reaches a certain goal
They facetime three times a week when she’s in Hungary
Carleton’s next basket came one and a half minutes into the quarter and her team up 7-2. She got the ball at midcourt from Destiny Slocum and took on Brianna Fraser one-on-one. They’re the same age, both 26, but their careers took very different paths. Born in Brooklyn, Fraser played for a bigger college, Maryland, but wasn’t drafted into the WNBA
although she signed a training camp contract with the New York Liberty in February
she’s one of the most sought-after forwards
she won various individual and team accolades at ASC Sepsi in Romania
She also plays for the Azerbaijan national team
Carleton went to Iowa State and
“I wasn’t highly recruited when I was in high school
My time with age-group national teams is where I got the most attention
Iowa State was the school that I could tell was extremely invested in me and believed in me and my future
I immediately felt comfortable when I visited so I knew that Iowa State was going to be the place for me,” says Carleton
We loved her versatile skillset and amazing commitment to doing the work needed to be a great player
She wanted to be coached and pushed to achieve her goals,” says her college coach
with the American-Azerbaijani now trying to stop her from behind
Fraser pressured her from the side and Carleton lost the ball
as the bounce pass directed at Fraser fell right into her hands
she lured Fraser away from the basket and passed the ball to Cyesha Goree
has held dual citizenship and plays for the Hungarian national team
but a slight pain in her right shoulder stopped her in her tracks

MP Fekete-Győr is not willing to give up his position
he has never even apologized for his criminal conduct

he admitted to having thrown the smoke grenade; and said that he has ‘no regrets’ about it either

His political party, Momentum, has reacted to the recent development in a public statement. ‘While the helpers of paedophiles are being let go, this regime would send fathers with families to prison,’ they wrote, in reference to the pardon scandal which led to the resignation of President Katalin Novák and MP, former Minister of Justice Judit Varga
this statement also draws attention to the fact that people from the right-wing Fidesz party
are willing to take accountability for their actions
while convicted criminal András Fekete-Győr from the left-wing Momentum party is still not willing to resign
It is also unclear why his party is adamant about sticking by him
he seems to be more of a liability than an asset
Fekete-Győr was their candidate in the 2021 opposition primary election

he had appeared on the left-leaning political online show Partizán for in an interview in April 2021

Audi has started preparations at its plant in Györ
for the production of the new generation of electric drives called MEBeco for the Volkswagen Group's small electric cars announced from 2025
The first systems for this have arrived and the planning of the production lines is underway
Audi had already confirmed in June 2022 that the drives for the MEBeco will come from Györ and announced that a new production area would be set up for the production of motors for small electric cars
Audi Hungaria has now also provided some details about the production: the vertical range of manufacture has been increased
which also requires “new competences”
the disc pack for the MEBeco is being mass-produced within the company for the first time (and apparently not sourced as a supplier component
The same applies to the rotors and power electronics
which are now also manufactured directly in Györ
the electric motors for the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) have also been built in series in Györ – for the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron
Around 700 employees produce up to 2,000 PPE motors a day on 15,000 square metres
we successfully launched series production of our PPE (Premium Platform Electric) electric platform drives and have already started preparing for the next generation of electric drives
the MEBeco,” says Robert Buttenhauser
Board Member for Engine Production at Audi Hungaria
“This also shows the intensity of the transformation that is taking place in our company
We are constantly preparing our staff for the production of the new engine range
which will require new activities and competences.”
