with close to 18 million people staying at domestic accommodations
Nearly 9.3 million of these travelers were Hungarian residents
showing a significant rise in domestic tourism
According to the National Tourism Data Supply Centre (NTAK)
Veszprém County emerged as the biggest winner
welcoming over one million domestic tourists to its accommodations
The most popular destinations for Hungarian travelers included Siófok
tourists from Komárom–Esztergom primarily traveled to Siófok
residents of Békés and Nógrád counties journeyed the farthest from their home regions
favouring destinations like Hajdúszoboszló
travelers from Bács–Kiskun County primarily visited Siófok
NTAK data also revealed differences in travel preferences across age groups
senior travelers (65+) from the same region—approximately 131,000 individuals—were more inclined to visit spa towns such as Hajdúszoboszló
Luxury travel preferences also varied by region
Tourists from Győr–Moson–Sopron were the most likely to book high-end accommodations
with 63 per cent of their stays occurring in 4- or 5-star hotels
campers from Pest County made up the majority of those booking campsites
With domestic travel booming and Hungarians exploring their own country more than ever
2024 has proven to be a milestone year for tourism in Hungary
the country’s picturesque destinations remain as popular as ever among local and international visitors alike

Cavendish finishes sixth in front pack behind second-placed Quaranta and third-placed Mareczko
Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the opening stage of the Tour de Hongrie
outpacing Samuel Quaranta (MBH Bank Colpack Ballan) and Jakub Mareczko (Corratec-Vini Fantini) in a crash-hit sprint finish in Hajdúszoboszló
The Australian bounced back from the disappointment of missing selection for the Giro d’Italia to take his fourth win of the year after a trio of victories on home ground at the Tour Down Under
the 21-year-old son of 1990s pro racer Ivan
couldn’t quite draw up alongside and had to settle for a clear second place
while fellow Italian Mareczko rounded out the podium ahead of Nicklas Pedersen (TDT-Unibet)
"Everyone was quite nervous about the wind in the first half of the stage
Ultimately the wind wasn't strong enough and so we've had quite a relaxed day until we hit the finishing circuit," Welsford said after his win
"Hats off to the breakaway – they did a pretty good job staying away from the bunch
used other team's trains and had really good legs to take my first win here in Hungary."
Mark Cavendish took sixth place at the line after going a touch early following his Astana Qazaqstan team’s lead out
his best sprint result since winning stage 4 of the Tour Colombia back in February
The sprint for the line was set up after lone breakaway survivor Martin Voltr (Pierre Baguette) was caught 13km from the line having gone solo at 38km from the end of the flat 166km opener
He had been previously joined by Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi)
Balazs Rózsa (Epronex-Hungary) and Viktor Filutás (Hungary) in the move but proved the strongest to last longer than his companions
He’d also pick up seven seconds of time bonuses along the way to launch himself up into second overall behind the first leader of the race
it was Astana who set up the most coherent lead-out train
with three riders bringing Cavendish to the sprint
the train peeled away a little too early to leave the Manxman sprinting with over 200 metres to go
Mareczko and Manuel Peñalver (Polti-Kometa) were all spread across the road and hitting the wind a little later
while over by the barriers a touch of wheels saw Campbell Stewart (Jayco-AlUla) rider hit the deck hard
sparking a multi-rider crash as the sprint unfolded ahead
As Welsford powered to the front at the 50-metre mark
acknowledging the Australian’s winning burst to the line
Pedersen and Peñalver came through to round out the top five behind the winner

Belépés TámogatásIn a small way, Hajdúszoboszló illustrates the madness that awaits the whole countryEnglish
The entrance of the spa in Hajdúszoboszló on 12 June 2023 – Photo by Zsolt Czeglédi / MTIBozzay BalázsIstván Dezsényi (translation)Locals do not understand why so many guest workers have arrived in Hajdúszoboszló
as they have been hearing that no migrants are allowed to set foot in the country
But the situation has changed: According to Viktor Orbán
500,000 new workers will be needed in Hungary
The locals are hyping each other into believing that the foreigners will rob
but the police have not received a single report of such a thing
This is of course very much a consequence of the Hungarian government's communication over the last eight years
"We have never invited anyone to live here with us, either as a guest worker or for any other reason." (Viktor Orbán, 2017, Kossuth Radio)
"No migrants should be allowed to enter Hungary." (Viktor Orbán, 2018, Annual Opening of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
a sharp conflict has unfolded in Hajdúszoboszló
illustrates what will likely be one of the most divisive issues in Hungary in the next few years
Locals are angry because many foreign guest workers are coming to the town due to the nearby factory constructions
They are angry and desperate about guest workers coming to Hungary
when Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had insisted for years that they would not be allowed to come here because they would only bring trouble
The mayor of Hajdúszoboszló fears for the city's tourism
and – in a Facebook post that has since been deleted – asked local residents to "report any cases where they see or suspect guest workers staying."
“I will disclose the names of individuals who are hosting guest workers”
The Hungarian government has recently announced several giant investments in the Debrecen area: there's a BMW factory is under construction
are building a giant battery factory in the eastern Hungarian city
The announcements usually stress that these will create thousands of new jobs
but they fail to mention who will work in these plants or who will build them
given the acute labour shortage in Hungary and the increasing number of guest workers coming to the country
it seems that a large proportion of these jobs will be performed by foreigners from outside the EU
a high number of workers from outside the EU have arrived in the Debrecen area
They have been accommodated in the surrounding villages
but after years of fear-mongering about foreigners
the local Hungarians are – to put it mildly – not happy about their arrival
wrote on his Facebook page that he had consulted the local police chief and asked for increased attention from the police
"For decades we have worked diligently to build and maintain our leading role in tourism
[...] I therefore firmly declare that we will not allow anyone to compromise the safety and reputation of our city
We will do everything we can to prevent the construction of workers' hostels in our city
I will disclose the names of individuals who are hosting foreign guest workers in Hajdúszoboszló," he wrote
He also added that the municipality has taken several measures in recent months "to further restrict the possibility of setting up and operating a workers' hostel in our city beyond the priority holiday zone
extending it to almost the entire city"
a workers' hostel may only be set up in the city's industrial zone and only if the operator is a local entrepreneur from Hajdúszoboszló
it is possible to carry out further inspections based on reports from the public
the disaster management and public health authorities"
"I myself have not worked for the flourishing of tourism in our city for nearly three decades to see it destroyed as a by-product of industrial development in Debrecen."
He called on residents "to report any cases where they have witnessed or suspect the harbouring of guest workers"
The new BMW factory construction site near Debrecen in January 2023 – Photo by Lujza Hevesi-szabó / TelexThe accommodation providers as public enemyThe comments under the mayor's post reflected a relentless lynch mob mentality developing
Several locals requested that the police check out a well-known local nightclub
Another person wrote that the police had been there
Some complained about the arrival of "people of Turkish religion"
others disagreed with the mayor's idea to build a workers' hostel in the industrial park
They suggested that no such hostel should be built anywhere in the city
tempers continue to flare in the 18,000-member local Facebook group "I heard it in Szoboszló"
Some have tried to calm the angry people by saying that so far there is no definite information on whether there has been any violence or illegalities on the part of the migrant workers
and that there is no point in panicking until information becomes available
"Things should get sorted out before a bigger problem arises
Someone linked the government's new guest worker law to the post
which allows a guest worker to stay in Hungary for a maximum of 2+1 years
“It doesn't help us much if they keep taking turns
These 2+1 years are only enough to avoid being conspicuous if they become permanently ill,” one person wrote
Now that's what we need:) after 3 years they get a new ID card and the 2+1 years begin again:))))" - someone else wrote
There was one who added: "The Chinese
because white people can't tell them apart."
Some people blamed the ruling party and Fidesz voters for the situation:
But most of them didn't raise their voices against the real decision-makers
Fidesz government members for letting guest workers come here
but instead declared the accommodation providers the new public enemy
many people don't care and will provide them accommodation"
Several people agreed with the mayor and called for those providing accommodation to migrant workers to be held accountable
Although some were sceptical about whether this would be effective: "It will only result in illegal renting to blacks."
we've scanned through hundreds of comments in local Facebook groups
To give you a sense of the desperation and lynch mob mood
Someone wrote that "they are also human beings who are moving abroad in the hope of a more comfortable
The response to this was "I sincerely wish that a good number of them would get accommodation next to your house
you will be lynched and you deserve it."
We wrote to the police in Hajdúszoboszló to find out how many offences have been committed in recent months that can be linked to guest workers
I would like to inform you that the Hajdúszoboszló Police Department has not received any reports or taken any police action in connection with foreign guest workers this year."
– the Police Headquarters of Hajdú-Bihar County wrote to us
there is no evidence that foreign guest workers have committed crimes in Hajdúszoboszló
yet the locals continue to suggest otherwise
virtually hyping each other into believing that Armageddon is upon them
the only problem locals have with a guest worker is that they are "sitting on a bench
Mayor of Hajdúszoboszló at the Assembly meeting – Source: Gyula Czeglédi / FacebookMigrant or guest worker
follows strongly from the last eight years of government communication
We have heard this a million times from politicians of the governing party
"The opposition would allow migrants in" – elections in Hungary were won with such scaremongering
the prime minister has stressed that it's not only people from war zones that Hungary won't allow to come here
but also those who would come from a peaceful country
"We have never invited anyone to live here with us
either as a guest worker or for any other reason
we are not an immigrant country and Hungary doesn't want to become an immigrant country."
you can't take the jobs of Hungarians!"
Orbán's attitude towards the issue has now changed
as the Hungarian labour market has become very strained due to the declining population and the need for workers in new factories under construction
making it almost impossible to find workers in Hungary
For some reason, it seems that the information that there has been a change in the government's economic policy has not reached many Hungarian voters. It is not known how many people have heard or read what Viktor Orbán said quite clearly at an event of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry this spring:
"the Hungarian economy will need half a million new workers within a year or two."
immediately added that while there is a need for all these new workers
He said economic rationale was only one aspect
"because we have already seen the situation in some Western European countries where they are overburdened with guest workers"
We need to be very careful about guest workers
According to the Prime Minister's ideas
it is primarily the internal reserves that need to be mobilised
but this doesn't mean public employees
because there are no reserves in that system
There may still be some in the eastern part of the country
and he is counting on Hungarians in neighbouring countries as well
because if many of those living there move here – and there has been a trend towards this for a very long time – then after a while Hungarians will disappear from the Hungarian-inhabited areas outside the country
At this year's event of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce
Orbán also said that he believes Hungary cannot afford to import foreigners because guest workers from "certain population groups" are better workers than the Hungarian reserve here
He said that we cannot afford the luxury that is apparent in Western Europe
where "natives" are unwilling to do certain jobs
In reality, however, we are seeing an increasing number of foreign guest workers being brought to Hungary by manufacturing companies and recruitment agencies
There is no real unemployment on the domestic labour market
there has been a stifling shortage of labour in many sectors for years
and this is a serious obstacle to the country's economic development
More and more foreign workers are coming to Hungary from more and more countries. There aren't enough welders, forklift drivers, lorry drivers, or even skilled workers for simple tasks. So Hungary gets Filipinos
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán speaks at the opening ceremony of the annual economic policy forum of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Budapest on 9 March 2023 – Photo by Szilárd Koszticsák / MTIIt is questionable how 200-300 thousand foreigners can be brought into the domestic lynch mob atmosphere and the uncompromising xenophobia – even though they always arrive for existing jobs
so companies bring them in with a valid employment contract
They would not start looking for work upon arrival
On top of this, with these 200-300 thousand new foreign guest workers, Hungary won't even come close to the similar indicators of neighbouring countries – not only of Western European countries
but not even those of post-socialist countries
with a labour market more or less the same size as Hungary's
mostly Ukrainian guest workers even before the war
and this number has since increased many times over
Just a few weeks ago, Fidesz passed the guest worker law, which Orbán called "the strictest rule in Europe". According to this, only as many guest workers can enter Hungary as there are vacancies. Guest workers can come for two years, which can only be extended once.
the Hungarian population is declining at a rapid pace
there are less and less active workers generating pensions
while it would be good if the generated value could be constantly increased
It wouldn't even help if every Hungarian woman of child-bearing age were to magically become fertile and have at least three children at this moment
since this surplus would only appear on the labour market in 20-25 years' time
The reality is that Hungary is facing a demographic disaster
our population has fallen by more than a million (from 10.7 million to 9.59 million) and
according to researchers at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office
the decline will be even faster in the next 40 years as deaths outnumber births by an ever greater margin
there could be more than one and a half million less Hungarians than today

FeatureSome 30 factories are expected to make the country one of the world leaders in electric car batteries by 2030
Local residents are worried about the consequences of this rapid industrialization
As she sat in the car driving her to eastern Hungary
Eva Kozma recoiled at the sight of the concrete foundations
just a few kilometers from her home: "The CATL factory is ruining our lives!" It's right here
in the southern industrial park of the country's second-largest city
where the global leader in the electric battery market
China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.
is building Europe's largest lithium-ion plant
with a capacity of 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh)
These 221 hectares of former fertile fields should eventually be able to equip one million cars with electric batteries
production is causing concern among the local population
a rural village of 5,300 inhabitants bordering the CATL plant
The 47-year-old Hungarian moved there 17 years ago in search of a healthy environment in which to raise her children
She now feared that her home may become uninhabitable
"It's a sector that uses dangerous solvents and heavy metals
which could find their way into the soil we farm
The authorities are not up to the task of enforcing the regulations."
She also feared an influx of foreign labor into this small locality
we've been told over and over again that foreigners shouldn't steal our jobs and our culture
this could lead to modern-day slavery." It's a situation that the village is already facing: One family home is currently occupied by around 50 Asian workers living in less-than-desirable conditions

the Debrecen General Court delivered a final judgment in a case that had attracted considerable public attention
A Pakistani national was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and deported from Hungary for five years after committing a sexual assault against a minor in Hajdúszoboszló
The case was first heard in the Hajdúszoboszló District Court
where the defendant was found guilty of indecent assault in December 2024
he was sentenced to 1 year in prison and banned from all work related to the upbringing
supervision and care of children under 18 years of age
the court did not establish the sexual coercion charged in the indictment
The prosecution appealed against the first instance conviction for aggravation and the defence appealed for mitigation
and the case was sent to the second instance
The Debrecen Court of Appeal applied a more serious legal classification, reclassifying the act as the crime of sexual coercion. According to Infostart
the accused had not only engaged in immoral conduct
but had also used coercion to satisfy his sexual desire with a minor victim
the sentence was increased to three years’ imprisonment
and he was expelled from Hungary for five years
According to the facts established in the conviction
the accused travelled from Debrecen to Hajdúszoboszló on 1 April 2024 to meet a woman who had advertised sexual services online
he approached the woman and they walked to a nearby wooded area
Although he handed over the agreed payment
where he noticed a 12-year-old girl accompanied by two younger children
It was at this point that the events which became the subject of the criminal proceedings began
The accused started to follow the three minors as they were walking home
The children noticed that they were being followed and became frightened
The man tried to establish contact by saying hello and then asked the 12-year-old victim for social media contact details
the accused took advantage of the physical proximity: with one hand
he grabbed the girl’s bottom against her will
The child immediately pushed the man away and changed to a faster pace
when the man stroked the victim’s chest through the cloth
The little girl continued to protest and then ran home with the two younger children
where she tearfully told her family what had happened
The court of appeal clearly found that the accused had committed the crime with sexual intent
It assessed the victim’s situation as threatening
as the age of the child and the man’s behaviour combined to create a vulnerable situation
the accused’s aim was the direct satisfaction of his sexual desire

a hotel in the popular spa town of Hajdúszoboszló has become embroiled in controversy due to its use as accommodation for Filipino guest workers involved in the construction of a BMW factory near Debrecen
has been rented out for this purpose since last autumn
despite not holding the necessary permits for such use
This has raised concerns both locally and nationally
The controversy deepens with the involvement of Duna Faktor
a debt collection and financial services firm
which acquired the hotel during a liquidation process
The transaction has been described as complex and opaque
with the property being sold for a fraction of its appraised value
largely through debt assumption rather than direct payment
Duna Faktor’s connections extend to several small businesses that have acquired parts of the hotel property
further complicating the ownership structure
Local mayor Czeglédi Gyula has been vocal about the issues arising from this arrangement
particularly concerning the lack of tax payments to the municipality
hotel owners or renters should be paying local taxes associated with providing worker accommodations
This has prompted calls for stricter regulations and enforcement
particularly in areas designated as therapeutic or world heritage sites
to prevent such properties from being used as worker accommodations
The situation is further complicated by the Hungarian government’s unclear stance on the regulation of such facilities
Efforts to get clarification from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice have been met with silence or vague responses
leaving the local authorities uncertain about their responsibilities in enforcing regulations
there are allegations that Duna Faktor and its associated entities have been involved in dubious business practices
including the sale of so-called health products to elderly individuals under questionable circumstances
This past activity has raised concerns about the ethical standards of the company and its affiliates
further clouding the public perception of their current business operations
The diplomatic implications of this situation are also noteworthy
The large influx of foreign workers and the conditions under which they are housed can have broader social and economic impacts
potentially affecting Hungary’s international relations
particularly with countries like the Philippines
The controversy surrounding the Hotel Aqua Blue and its use as worker accommodation reflects broader issues within Hungary regarding the regulation of foreign labor
local officials and residents alike are calling for greater transparency and accountability from all parties involved

Easter is one of the most important holidays in Hungary

These include egg painting and water sprinkling

Let us present this year’s Easter in a photo gallery
Easter decoration in a park in Hajdúszoboszló

Easter egg painting has been a centuries-old tradition in Hungary
not only as a decoration but also as a symbol: the red egg
symbolises the blood of Christ and his resurrection
eggs were coloured with natural materials such as onion skins
beetroot or walnut stew and often decorated with wax techniques
An indispensable “payment” for Easter watering is the coloured eggs given to the waterers by the girls
Catholic believers ask for blessings on Easter ham
This is mainly a Transylvanian custom in the predominantly Hungarian Szeklerland
for example in Csíkszereda or Sepsiszentgyörgy
at the consecration of the Passover in the garden of the St
Nicholas Greek Catholic Cathedral in Nyíregyháza on Easter Sunday:
Participants in the joint Easter Sunday border crossing in Lemhény and Kézdialmás will ride in decorated carts
