The Hódmezővásárhely-Szeged tram-train line is served by Citylink hybrid vehicles supplied by Swiss company Stadler
The Hódmezővásárhely-Szeged tram-train is Hungary’s first public tram-train system
It links Hódmezővásárhely and Szeged cities in Csongrád county in southern Hungary
Providing a transfer-free connection between the two city centres
the tram-train system became fully operational in November 2021
Construction began in April 2018 and the system is operated by Hungarian national train operator MÁV-Start
The project aims to establish a sustainable and safe alternative to private car transportation
The connection between the two downtowns with a direct fixed railway track will reduce the travel time and increase accessibility
It will also enhance the competitiveness of public transportation
The project involved the construction of a 3.6km-long single-track tram line between the Hódmezővásárhely Népkert railway station and the Hódmezővásárhely railway terminal
The line includes two traffic bypasses and a two-track tram-train terminal
The tram line passes through five stations including the Hódmezővásárhely Folk Garden
and a double-track terminal near Hódmezővásárhely main station
The tram-train deviates from the main railway line at the Hódmezővásárhely Népkert junction and switches to tram operation
Andrássy út and Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca before terminating near the Hódmezővásárhely station
The tram-train service includes 12 hybrid vehicles capable of operating safely on both urban tram and rail networks. The Citylink bi-directional
dual-mode vehicles are designed to meet the latest safety standards
The low-floor and barrier-free configuration enables easy accessibility to people with limited mobility
The travel time between the two cities has been reduced to less than 40 minutes
The Citylink has a lightweight maintenance-free design and its car bodies are made of high-strength stainless steel
as well as four double-leaf doors on each side and a ramp system
The 37.2m-long and 2.65m-wide diesel-electric hybrid tram-train weighs about 71t and can accommodate 216 passengers
of which 16 are foldable and four are wheelchair-accessible
The tram-train has two multi-purpose spaces to accommodate wheelchairs
Amenities include an advanced passenger information system, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, charging points for mobiles and laptops, and a state-of-the-art onboard security camera system
The vehicles are powered by the 600V DC overhead line network in the two cities
as well as two low-emission 390kW diesel power-packs on the main railway line connecting the two cities
Designed to run at a maximum speed of 100km/h
the vehicles can travel at a maximum speed of 50km/h
while diesel-powered operation on the open line is expected to increase the speeds up to 80km/h
The Hódmezővásárhely-Szeged tram-train project includes the building of tramways
The 22km-long Szeged-Rókus Branch-Hódmezővásárhely Népkert station section was renovated to meet the requirements for the existing track speed of 100km/h
The construction works also included a new second track between the Szeged Rókus-Baktó Branch and the Sártó Branch-Kopáncs station
The Algyő Tisza Bridge over the Tisza River was also repaired as part of the project
The Algyo station was renovated with a new passenger platform
while the Hódmezővásárhely Nepkert station was entirely rebuilt
The central traffic control on the Szeged Rókus Branch-Hódmezővásárhely People’s Garden route had to be constructed
Multiple park-and-ride parking lots and 900 bicycle storage spaces were created in Hódmezővásárhely
The total investment in the tram-train project is estimated at HUF80bn ($270.64m)
The project is supported by funding from Nemzeti Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő (NIF)
a state-owned infrastructure development company
The European Union also provided funding for the project
The Hungarian Ministry of National Development awarded grants worth HUF17.62bn ($53.83bn) for the purchase of eight new hybrid tram-train vehicles
The grant also covers funding for other components including the procurement of the underground bicycle lathe equipment for the construction of a tram-train maintenance base in Szeged
and Forrás Unió was engaged to prepare a feasibility study for the establishment of public transportation connections between Hódmezővásárhely and Szeged
a joint venture between MÁV Hungarian State Railways and voestalpine Railway Systems
was selected to provide turnouts for the project in 2018
MÁV-START awarded a contract to Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler for the delivery of eight bi-mode tram-train vehicles in May 2017. The company received another order for the delivery of four additional Citylink tram-trains
Hungarian railway construction company Swietelsky Vasúttechnika was awarded the contract for the construction works of the project

The following is a translation of an article written by Gáspár Kéri
Looking at the portraits of 1848 soldiers by József Plohn
a photographer from the city of Hódmezővásárhely
with the collection creating an extraordinary monument to the Hungarian freedom movement of the 19th century
They visited the photo studio of József Plohn in the twilight of their lives to have their faces captured in photosensitive emulsion
and become part of collective Hungarian memory forever
The antecedent of the story was the nationwide collection of photographs initiated by the Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca
Romania) National Museum of Historical Relics with its call for Photographs of the War of Independence for the Millennium
In its advertisements published in newspapers the institution encouraged all defence associations
and individuals to take photos of the artifacts
and not least of the surviving former soldiers
Almost the whole country was mobilized and began research to create a large-scale exhibition planned for the Millennium to commemorate the freedom fight in a truly dignified way
the youngest medium of image-making at the time
and distinctions of the soldiers are revealed as genuine attributes in the photographs’
Recent research suggests that József Plohn took the first group of his photographs in 1894–1895 on behalf of the Hódmezővásárhely Defence Association
The photographer was already a respected citizen of the town and had professional and friendly relations with the painters of the Great Plain
Plohn also took ethnographic and anthropological photographs of the surrounding local homesteads
their material and architectural monuments
can not only be found in Hódmezővásárhely but also in the Photographic Collection of the Museum of Ethnography
It is a tragedy of Hungarian history that the photographer died in 1944 in a cattle car on his way to Auschwitz
Plohn took eighty-four photographs of veteran soldiers in the two years preceding the millennium
adding another seventy-two pieces to his collection
who had already appeared in earlier photographs
so today we have a total of one hundred and fifty-six portraits of this kind
Although similar photos of elderly soldiers were taken all over the country at the time
nowhere else is such uniform typology and visual appearance to be found
and nowhere else is the social stratification of this part of the Great Plain of the time so eloquently illustrated
the photographs can be distinguished visually quite clearly according to the date of their creation: in the 1894–1895 portraits
we see half-figures sitting in armchairs in front of a homogeneous background
the full-length photographs of veterans are often surrounded by studio props—plants
The elderly people in the photographs had been mainly recruited from poor peasant backgrounds during the War of Independence
and several factors influenced their post-revolutionary fate
are revealed in the photographs as genuine attributes
Some of them went into hiding after the defeat of the freedom fight
some were conscripted into the Austrian army
while others joined the Hungarian Legion in Italy
after the Austrian–Hungarian Compromise of 1867
almost all of them returned to their native land
where they lived in modest or fair financial conditions
The political climate of the time is reflected in the fact that most of them wear a Veteran Medal
but there are some who had even served in the Austrian army and thus wore the 50th-anniversary badge of Franz Joseph’s coronation as Emperor
and former occupations of ninety of the soldiers in Plohn’s photographs are known
and in many cases we are familiar with their entire lifepaths
This is partly due to the photographer’s precise notes and partly to the careful research of posterity—the publication of this article was also greatly assisted by the work of historian Ferenc Bernátsky
head of the Local History Collection of the János Tornyai Museum—which has kept these photographs in the spotlight for decades
new descendants have come forward after recognizing their ancestors in the portraits of unknown veterans

The long-awaited Hódmezővásárhely-Szeged tram-train
will start regular operation at dawn on 29 November
Passengers will be able to travel between the two cities for free until mid-April 2022
Government Commissioner for the National Development Agency
"We have successfully passed the tram-train passenger test and accident simulation
We are getting closer to getting the scheduled traffic going," Lázár wrote on his Facebook page
At a press conference last week the government commissioner said that the launch of the tram-train connecting the two Hungarian cities could only be compared to the handover of the Békéscsaba-Szeged railway line 150 years ago
The first tram-train will depart on 29 November from Hódmezővásárhely at 3:31 and back from Szeged at 4:38. During the start-up period
trains will follow each other every 20 minutes during peak hours
and every 30 minutes thereafter. The tram-train will also run between the two cities during the night on Thursdays
Based on the technical and passenger experience gathered during this period
said the Fidesz politician who is also a member of parliament from the region
János Lázár emphasized that the investment of HUF 80 billion (over EUR 222 million) will pay off if the tram-train proves to be competitive compared to other modes of transport
and if passengers can get between the two cities cheaper and faster
the journey between the centres of the two settlements takes 50-55 minutes by bus or train - with a transfer from Szeged. During the commissioning period
the tram-trains will travel between Kossuth Square in Hódmezővásárhely and Széchenyi Square in Szeged in 40 minutes.
travel times will be reduced by three to four minutes
and the goal is to keep them to no more than 35 minutes from mid-March
Passengers will be able to use the tram-trains for free until April 15th. After that
the ticket between the two cities will cost HUF 465 (EUR 1,29)
and the trip within Hódmezővásárhely will cost HUF 250 (EUR 0,69)
has made an offer to the local government of Szeged to introduce a single pass for the entire line that includes the tram service in both cities
The price of the pass is expected to be between HUF 15,000 (EUR 41,63) and HUF 20,000 (EUR 55) per month

Hungary’s parliamentary elections in spring 2022 will give illiberal Prime Minister Viktor Orbán a chance to continue his Fidesz government for a fourth term
An unlikely opposition candidate could disrupt these plans
He entered the race without any party affiliation
beating Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony and European Parliament vice-president Klára Dobrev
Dobrev won the first round of primaries and has the support of a major opposition party
she is also the wife of former prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány – a socialist – which tarred her campaign
Her rivals argued that the electorate demanded a new candidate without any association with existing parties and politicians in Hungary
Márki-Zay’s victory at the 2018 mayoral byelection in Hódmezővásárhely was a surprise as well
A self-described right-wing Christian candidate and an opponent of Orbán’s Fidesz
he consolidated the opposition vote to win in Hódmezővásárhely – where Fidesz strongman János Lázár served as mayor from 2002-12 and an MP after 2014
Márki-Zay’s win set the stage for the 2019 local elections in Budapest, where putting forward a joint candidate was a successful tactic for the opposition in defeating Orbán
A major fault line in Hungarian politics has been Budapest – representing left-liberal politics – versus the rest of the country
Liberal politics resonate in county towns as well
Hódmezővásárhely is an interesting town to this extent
where former Fidesz parliamentary group leader Lázár is MP – a testament to the popularity of the governing party
It is situated in between two major left-liberal centres of power, Budapest and Szeged. Both of these have seen civil action in support of refugees crossing into Hungary, and protests against Orbán’s anti-LGBTQ+ law
Szeged is the only town where the left has continuously held control since 2006
but its mayor failed to transform his success in local politics to become a national rival to Orbán
Márki-Zay’s biggest success as mayor appears to have been decreasing the debt of the city
Opposition mayors tend to portray debt accumulated under their predecessors as a result of endemic corruption
but ultimately voters expect investment in infrastructure
In a way, having a non-Fidesz but a conservative and Christian mayor has benefited Hódmezővásárhely, even though the mayor himself has not delivered much. To consolidate support for Fidesz, Lázár has promised Hódmezővásárhely the biggest tramline extension for a century in Hungary
Rather than focusing on big projects and substantial political goals and slogans, Márki-Zay takes pride in being non-partisan. He is the founder of the Everybody’s Hungary movement
which “welcomes every decent Hungarian who is interested in change”
Its primary goal is to present joint candidates against Fidesz mayors in mayoral elections
but it does not propose any policy platforms to show the electorate why their candidates should be elected over Fidesz ones
Its vague platform purports to fight corruption and nepotism with new political faces in county towns
The movement echoes earlier dissident reformist circles from the 1980s
promoting a clean new beginning that moves away from old politics
Yet claiming to not have any politics is still a political position – and not a very promising one
Márki-Zay needs to present alternative policies and projects to those of Fidesz
and will have to rely on a party machine for campaigning support
He has already suggested establishing a new parliamentary faction for his own movement after the election
with “civil [society] candidates without any party affiliation”
Can having no politics bring political success to Márki-Zay
There is a legacy of successful dissidence movements in the region that displaced ex-communists
The region’s current politics are much more complex
and vague anti-corruption platforms cannot meet the challenges of Europeanisation
Márki-Zay attempted to take a stance on the contentious issue of LGBTQ+ rights, with an April 2021 press conference alongside his family. His suggestion that he was ready to stand with gay Hungarians
(including those in Fidesz) raised the ire of Orbán’s party
but signalled Márki-Zay’s appeal for both conservative and liberal voters
Márki-Zay will certainly affect the course of Hungarian politics
This ex-manager of an electricity company and avid follower of American politics cannot be underestimated as a political tactician
but whether his strategy will be enough to beat Orbán is less certain

The tram-train between Hódmezővásárhely and Szeged officially made its first trip
The vehicle left the station at 3:30 AM on Monday
Travelling on the tram-train is free of charge until mid-April
The project was financed from EU funds and cost 80 billion forints (EUR 217,789,390)
people can travel from one city to the other in 35 minutes
Neither László Botka, the mayor of Szeged, nor Péter Márki-Zay, the mayor of Hódmezővásárhely, were invited to the occasion. László Palkovics, the Minister for Innovation and Technology, and János Lázár, the Government Commissioner for Transport Investment, were there, writes HVG
The two mayors inaugurated the new means of transport in Szeged
Péter Márki-Zay took the tram-train at 9:30
He then handed over the line together with the mayor of Szeged
László Palkovics said that the tram-train is Hungary’s most innovative railway development
The next line could be developed between Debrecen and Nagyvárad
This investment would have a political aspect to it
along with Transylvania and the Hungarians in the region
The tram-train would connect cities but also Hungarians living in Hungary and Hungarians living as Romania’s official minority group
the tram-train would have the symbolic meaning of connecting a nation separated by a border
The diesel-electric hybrid CityLink manufactured by Stadler is an innovative vehicle in Hungary
The name indicates the function. The vehicle functions as a train and as a tram, depending on the location and the route. People can travel from one city to another without switching vehicles, thus saving time. Telex reported on the first occasion the tram-train was used
They reported that the actual time of the commute was 54 minutes
and certain circumstances can affect its schedule
If another vehicle is late or something happens
It could save time if the speed limit at certain places for trains would be 100 km/h instead of the current 80 km/h
It can be switched to diesel mode in places where getting electricity is not possible
The doors are also custom-made to fit the height of the stations
Only the door that matches the station’s height opens at the respective station
Passengers were generally satisfied with the tram-train
They like the comfort of it and plan to take the tram-train in the future
