Due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease
several minor Hungarian–Slovak and Hungarian–Austrian border crossings have been closed

To contain the spread of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease
Slovakia has introduced temporary border controls on its internal borders with Hungary and Austria from 8 April to 7 May 2025
The measure affects both passenger and freight traffic: 16 minor border crossings on the Slovak–Hungarian border and 20 – mostly low-traffic – crossings on the Austrian–Hungarian border have been closed
According to the Hungarian Road Transport Association (MKFE), the Slovak government made the decision on 7 April, after new infection clusters were identified in the regions of Bratislava, Trnava and Nitra. <a href="https://trans.info/en/fmd-truck-disinfection-408201" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">These restrictions have already been in place since 26 March on the Hungarian side of the Danube</a>
but the continued spread of the disease has led to a tightening of the measures

The police statement lists a total of twenty-one Austrian–Hungarian border crossings that have been closed
Traffic is still permitted at the main border crossings
