To contain the spread of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease
Slovakia has introduced temporary border controls on its internal borders with Hungary and Austria from 8 April to 7 May 2025
The measure affects both passenger and freight traffic: 16 minor border crossings on the Slovak–Hungarian border and 20 – mostly low-traffic – crossings on the Austrian–Hungarian border have been closed
According to the Hungarian Road Transport Association (MKFE), the Slovak government made the decision on 7 April, after new infection clusters were identified in the regions of Bratislava, Trnava and Nitra. These restrictions have already been in place since 26 March on the Hungarian side of the Danube
but the continued spread of the disease has led to a tightening of the measures

In addition, Austrian authorities have imposed restrictions on the Austrian–Hungarian border from 5 April

The police statement lists a total of twenty-one Austrian–Hungarian border crossings that have been closed
