The second day of competition in short track speed skating at the Torino 2025 FISU World University Games saw no difference from the first when it came to top spots
Korea triumphed in all three finals at Palavela
the men’s and women’s 500 metres
Although the spotlight was once again firmly on the Koreans
the arena was packed with great skaters from all over the world
who came to the FISU Games straight from the European Championships but saw his chances of battling for a medal in the 500 m in Torino disappear when he crashed in round two
The 21-year-old student from Budapest University of Technology and Economics took on skating because of his sister Petra
His grandparents brought him to the ice rink
and he started skating when he was around five
the Jaszapati siblings competed at the European Championships in Dresden
Peter participated for the second time in his career and finished eighth in 1000
Meanwhile his sister became the European champion for the first time in her career
On the opening day of FISU Games short track on Tuesday
and on Day 2 also raced in the mixed relay final with his Hungarian teammates
While having a successful older sister in the same sport helps
Petra and Peter Jaszpati don’t compare their achievements
Because she is older it’s of course helpful for me
looking at her past also helps to see if the sport is good or not for me,” explained Peter.“I’m just happy that she is successful
adding that they don’t talk a lot about skating at home
and we are there for each other if anyone has a hard time at a competition
Korean stars secure third wins in two days
a 20-year-old student from Korea University – Sejong Campus
finishing ahead of Weiying Hao from China (44.825) and Korean teammate Seo Whimin (44.925)
a 23-year-old from Dankook University-cheonan campus
crossed the finish line first in a time of 40.865
Shogo Miyata from Japan was second (41.120) and another Korean
The outcome in the mixed team relay final was the same
with powerhouse Korea (2:44.42) once again taking the crown with more than half a second margin ahead of China and Kazakhstan
Gilli and Taesung were part of the winning team
meaning they’ve already captured three gold medals apiece in Torino
Both were already victorious on Tuesday in the 1500 m races
Donghyun also won his third medal at the Games
After winning all six medals up for grabs on opening day
The Koreans are on track to repeating their success from Lake Placid 2023
where they captured 16 out of a possible 27 FISU medals
Short track speed skating in Torino concludes on Thursday
including the men’s and women’s 1000
the women’s 3000 relay and men’s 5000 relay

BEIJING (AP) — NASCAR and pro wrestling are not sports at the Winter Olympics
Instead of stock cars pinballing off one another at Bristol
there are daring skaters whipping around a track set up on a hockey-sized rink at the Capital Indoor Stadium — bumping and drafting
a shoulder there as they scuffle for position in what seem like impossibly tight corners
The unfortunate ones — and there are LOTS of those — wind up slamming into the thick pads cushioning the outside boards
often after getting a subtle nudge from one of their competitors
they don’t script the results like WWE
but it usually comes down to the almighty word of the chief referee
who looks a bit like Burt Bacharach but wields the power of Vince McMahon
No race is official until the ref makes the call
usually after watching a video replay monitor while the skaters and fans stir nervously
The vagaries of the rulebook generally leave plenty of room for griping and moaning
“It can definitely be frustrating,” American short tracker Kristen Santos said
“But I think that’s something we know going into this sport
Part of what keeps the sport so exciting is the uncertainty
You don’t know who’s going to win every time.”
Short track has been an official part of the Winter Games since 1992
My first real taste of it came a decade later at Salt Lake City
where Aussie Steven Bradbury pulled off one of the great upsets in Olympic history simply by remaining upright
Bradbury was hopelessly overmatched in the 1,000-meter final and lagged far behind
hoping others would fall or get disqualified so maybe he could sneak away with a bronze
It worked out beyond his wildest dreams when all four skaters ahead of him
Bradbury coasted across the line first with a dazed look
“Short track speedskating is a little bit different sort of a sport,” said Britain’s Farrell Treacy
who made the men’s 1,500 final in Beijing
“But that’s why I love the sport
The fact that you’re rubbing shoulders.”
The condition of the ice only adds to the unpredictability
The Zambonis pop out between every few races for resurfacing
and the workers are constantly pouring buckets of water and blasting the ice with a fire extinguisher-type device to smooth things out
But it’s impossible to keep the ice pristine for every race
“I was in a heat with an Italian,” he said
“These are just things you’ve got to deal with
We train to deal with the ‘undealables.'”
Nothing quite so dramatic as Bradbury’s victory has happened in Beijing
but there have still been plenty of thrills and spills
Corrinne Stoddard wound up with a broken nose in her very first Olympic race
losing an edge and careening so hard into the padding that her knees smashed into her face
“I didn’t have a lot of time to react,” said the 20-year-old American
“My main focus was not cut myself or break my leg
She returned to the ice a few nights later wearing a patch across the bridge of her nose that helped numb the pain
There was certainly no thought of quitting
“I went to the doctor that night (after her crash) and they were like
‘You can either stay here or you can go home.’ And I was like
actually thought of heading home after the disqualification of two of its skaters this week
World-record holder Hwang Daeheon was among those penalized
The federation filed complaints with the International Skating Union and the IOC
even though its protestations had absolutely no chance of changing the outcome
the referee’s decision is often debated but never altered
said any thoughts of bailing on Beijing were dismissed “because we have many races left in the remaining days.”
“We decide to stay and finish the games,” he said
which is conducted on a 400-meter oval and puts competitors in their own lanes
And don’t even get me started on the relays
which are organized mayhem with four skaters per team
tagging each other in and out with a shove to the rump
It’s more hectic than the subway at rush hour
“I watch long track sometimes and I think
maybe this is right up my street.’ But then I go
‘I think I like my sport a little bit better.'”
Nothing spices up the Olympics quite like a hint of NASCAR mixed with the WWE

Short Track is all about speed and strategic thinking
Although the Korean and Chinese skaters often excel at the FISU World University Games
they are challenged by athletes from many other countries
Short Track Speed Skating was first added to the sports programme of the Winter Universiade at the 12th edition in 1985 in Belluno
In the men’s competition the Canadians grabbed the gold in both the team and individual events
the athletes from which regularly reach the podium places in almost all Short Track Speed Skating distances
FISU Games medalists are also well decorated at international events
such as Choi Min-jeong (KOR) who won four gold medals at the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games and is a multiple Olympic and World Championship gold medalist
Short Track Speed Skating is a spectacular event which requires no special infrastructure as any ice hockey arena with dimensions corresponding to the international standards will be suitable
This discipline was recognised by the IOC as a full-fledged Olympic sport in 1992 and thanks to good cooperation with the International Skating Union (ISU) FISU closely follows the evolution of this sport to develop the competition programme

BEIJING, Feb 5 (Reuters) – Host nation China nabbed its first gold medal on Saturday as dazzling performances on snow and ice nudged the political drama that has dominated the Beijing Olympics toward the sidelines
“You can always trust China” began trending in posts on social media platform Weibo after its short track skaters won the mixed team relay
an event making its debut at the Olympics and that the country has dominated in international competition
The golden dream was almost cut short in the semi-final when the United States crossed the finish line ahead of the hosts
only to be disqualified along with the Russian Olympic Committee
“My heart was almost jumping out of my throat!” wrote “egg’s heartbeating diary” on Weibo
Six gold medals were up for grabs on Saturday as athletes overcame pandemic obstacles to shine on the world’s stage
even as political storylines continued to swirl around the Games
Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe
forced to isolate from his team mates because of a COVID-19 close contact
proved there were few Winter Games shows quite like his
A blistering skiing effort by the beloved biathlete brought his team back from the dead to triumph
The close contact restrictions were still in place as the winners were presented with their bouquets of flowers
and Boe stood apart from his team at the ceremony
An upset in the men’s freestyle moguls saw Walter Wallberg of Sweden pip Canadian Michael Kingsbury for gold
Dutch favourite Irene Schouten came from behind in the 3,000 metres speed skating to beat Italian Francesca Lollobrigida

Ursa Bogataj sparked Slovenian joy when she won the women’s normal hill ski-jump gold
Her compatriot Nika Kriznar claimed bronze as Germany’s Katharina Althaus had to settle for silver
Norway nabbed the first gold medal at the Games when Therese Johaug powered to victory in the women’s skiathlon race
well ahead of Russian Natalia Nepryaeva and Austria’s Teresa Stadlober
Further back in 43rd place was Dinigeer Yilamujiang
a 20-year-old cross-country skier whose role as a final torchbearer for China in the opening ceremony continued to make waves
The selection of Yilamujiang
from Altay in China’s western Xinjiang region
as one of two final torchbearers came as many western nations diplomatically boycotted the Games over China’s treatment of Uyghurs and members of other Muslim minority groups
China rejects allegations of human rights abuses
The International Olympic Committee on Saturday insisted Yilamujiang’s ethnicity had nothing to do with her selection
to compete… and to take part in any ceremony,” said IOC spokesman Mark Adams
who triumphantly opened the Olympics on Friday night in a partially-filled Bird’s Nest stadium
continued his diplomatic push on the Games’ sidelines
The day after forming a groundbreaking alliance with Russian President Vladimir Putin against the West
Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan ahead of a Lunar New Year-themed banquet at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People
Xi expressed “heartfelt thanks to all governments
peoples and international organisations who care about and support the Beijing Winter Olympics.”
In a stunning collision of sports and politics not seen since the Cold War era
Xi and Putin on Friday declared a no-limit partnership on the sidelines of the Games
backing each other over Ukraine and Taiwan and inking new deals on energy and trade
Taiwan condemned the ‘contemptible’ timing of the partnership
while the United States said Xi had wasted an opportunity to take action on Ukraine
Beijing’s slopes were not without their own controversy
Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt hit out at Olympic ski organisers after Saturday’s downhill training was cancelled with just three runners having completed the course
The number of COVID-19 cases inside the Games bubble hit the second highest since arrivals began after 45 new cases were detected on Friday
Organisers said the situation was under control and cases were confined to a ‘closed loop’
The Games are being held in Beijing in extraordinary circumstances with metal fences
workers in hazmat suits and strict mask policies meant to prevent the spread of coronavirus
At least one athlete said he was determined to make the most of it
said on Saturday the Beijing Olympics would be his last snowboarding event and that he would retire from all competition
said he was “enjoying every moment” of his final Games
