Brussels 14 February 2025 – Segregated kindergartens in Kalocsa
Hungary have been shut down and measures put in place to ensure integrated education for Romani children following an investigation and legal complaint by the Rosa Parks and Polgár Foundations
with support from the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC)
The Deputy Commissioner for Fundamental Rights - Ombudsperson for the Rights of National Minorities in Hungary brought a decision on 31 January 2025 against the head of the kindergartens in the city of Kalocsa and the municipality responsible for their administration
As a result of the Ombudsman’s intervention
the municipality ultimately decided to permanently close the segregated kindergartens
The district was subsequently redistributed among other kindergartens in the city
with district boundaries revised to consider both proximity and socio-cultural diversity
ensuring a more balanced composition of students
and segregation—at least at the kindergarten level—effectively eliminated
This decision marks the effective end of segregation at the kindergarten level in Kalocsa
emphasised the broader significance of the case
remarking that “it highlights a longstanding issue that we have consistently encountered—Romani parents' applications are often assessed informally
The case in Kalocsa further demonstrated the extent of institutional disregard
which had been legally prepared and documented by the NGOS
were still dismissed by the kindergarten administration
This case exemplifies how local parental involvement
as evidenced by the successful closure of the segregated kindergarten.”
praised the local activists and parents for standing up for their rights
the local administration tried to hinder parents and children from accessing inclusive education
This case stands as a testament to the power of community legal action in fighting discrimination and advancing the rights of Romani children.”
emphasised the “crucial role played by two local activists
initiated and pursued the issue.” She also noted that local parents view the changes as a success and are satisfied with the current situation
activists will continue to monitor the situation in Kalocsa
the organisations caution that challenges remain
where Romani children continue to face systemic disadvantages
including disproportionate placement in so-called ‘special education’ programmes
The Ombudsman has recommended that the State Secretariat for Education review and regulate the framework for nationality education programmes in kindergartens to ensure compliance with legal standards.

ESA’s Mars Express has provided images of a remarkable crater on Mars that may show evidence that the planet underwent significant periodic fluctuations in its climate due to changes in its rotation axis.
On 19 June 2011, Mars Express pointed its high-resolution stereo camera at the Arabia Terra region of Mars, imaging the Danielson and Kalocsa craters.
Danielson crater is named after the late George E Danielson, who was instrumental in the development of many spacecraft cameras flown to Mars. Seen to the right (north) in the image, it is the larger crater, roughly 60 km across.
Kalocsa crater lies in the centre of the image and is smaller, about 33 km in diameter and a kilometre shallower than Danielson. It is named after a town in Hungary famed for its astronomical observatory.
Danielson crater, like many in the Arabia Terra region, is filled with layered sediments, which in this instance have been heavily eroded over time. Within the crater are peculiarly layered buttes, known as yardangs.
Yardangs are streamlined hills carved from bedrock or any consolidated or semi-consolidated material by abrasive dust and sand particles carried in the wind.
They are seen on Earth in desert regions, with notable examples in North Africa, Central Asia and Arizona in the United States.
In the case of Danielson crater, it is believed that sediments were cemented by water, possibly from an ancient deep groundwater reservoir, before being eroded by the wind.
The orientation of the yardangs leads scientists to theorise that strong north–northeasterly winds (from the lower right in the image) both deposited the original sediments and then caused their subsequent erosion in a later drier period of martian history.
A 30 km-long field of darker dunes can be seen bisecting the yardangs and is thought to have formed at a later epoch.
The crater floor of Danielson shows evidence for a series of alternating sedimentary layers with roughly uniform thickness and separation.
Some scientists believe that this indicates periodic fluctuations in the climate of Mars, triggered by regular changes in the planet’s axis of rotation. The different layers would have been laid down during different epochs.
By marked contrast, Kalocsa crater shows a completely different topography.
Here, no layered sediments are seen. This is thought to be due to the higher altitude of its floor, with the crater not tapping in to the suspected underlying ancient water reservoir.
Another hypothesis is that this crater is younger than its neighbour, created when water was not present anymore.

Flyover video shows deck closure of the Kalocsa-Paks Bridge above the Danube River.
The slab of the bridge’s middle segment was cast on 29 January 2024 completing the joining of the crossing. The cable-stayed structure comprises 89 segments and each new segment involved 150 processes. The bridge was constructed following the cantilever method. Construction was carried out with four formwork travellers designed by Peri.
The 946m-long bridge is the largest extradosed structure in Hungary and the country’s 20th bridge across the Danube River.
The Hungarian Ministry of Construction and Transport commissioned the bridge to connect the towns of Kalocsa and Paks approximately 120km south of Budapest. The bridge is expected to reduce the travel time between both towns and the M6 highway from 55 minutes to approximately 15 minutes.
The bridge was designed by CEH and is being constructed by Duna Aszfalt.
The budget for the crossing and related roadworks has been estimated to cost US$269.7 million (€248.6 million).
Construction on the project began in February 2021 and is expected to conclude summer 2024. Once complete, the bridge will carry one lane of traffic in each direction and a bidirectional cycle path on each side.

a file according to which the parish priest of Dunavecse
Gergő Bese may have attended gay parties and had maintained long-term
has been seen in highest government circles
The Apostolic Nunciature admitted to the newspaper that it had been informed of the serious allegations against the priest and that the same had been forwarded to the Archdiocese of Kalocsa-Kecskemét
A few hours after the article was published
the office of the Archbishop of Kalocsa-Kecskemét issued a statement saying that Bábel
"has suspended Gergő Péter Bese from his priestly ministry
"The Apostolic Nunciature has been informed of the serious accusations concerning the priest of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa-Kecskemét
these accusations have been immediately forwarded to the Ordinary of the aforementioned priest

Gergő Bese has become a proponent of political Christianity and has participated in several major government-related events
The paper writes that it has been informed by a total of four Fidesz-KDNP politicians about the existence of a file proving that Gergő Bese attended gay parties. The paper claims that the case is being described in government circles as "even more egregious than the Szájer story"
We tried to reach Gergő Bese several times by phone to request a comment on the information published in the press
Gergő Bese's official Facebook page became unavailable
Gergő Bese campaigned against the opposition in the Zugliget Catholic church
where he specifically said who should lead the country
following a Sunday Mass at the Szent Család Parish
he said that the opposition parties would abolish religious education and lessons on ethics in schools
and claimed they would return all church-owned schools to the state and would take funding away from church institutions
In that presentation Bese also pointed out that sexual propaganda was already here in Hungary
and that the organisations involved in sensitising young people were mainly targeting small schoolchildren
because they were still easily impressionable
The photos of Gergő Bese conducting a consecration ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office in the former Carmelite monastery are no longer available on Viktor Orbán's Facebook page
Since Bese consecrated the building several times
we searched for the gallery of both the 2022 and 2024 events
The current state of of the gallery of photos about the consecration on the Prime Minister's Facebook page The photos have disappeared from Viktor Orbán's Facebook page
and the embedded images are not available in the articles written about the dedication at the time
We contacted the Prime Minister's press chief Bertalan Havasi on Friday to find out whether the photos had indeed been deleted

here's a totally non-fictional Martian chronicle: a picture of two craters on the Red Planet that record how the climate has changed over the course of billions of years
sent back by the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter and released today
focuses on the Kalocsa and Danielson craters in Mars' Arabia Terra region
measuring roughly 38 miles (60 kilometers) across
or 33 kilometers across) and about a half-mile (1 kilometer) shallower
The most noticeable features on Danielson's crater floor are the dark, eroded layers of sediments and streamlined hills known as yardangs. In today's photo advisory
ESA's science team explains that the sediments appear to have been cemented by water
possibly from an ancient deep groundwater reservoir
The orientation of the yardangs suggests that strong north-northeasterly winds initially deposited the sediments
Danielson's layers may chronicle fluctuations in the climate of Mars
triggered by changes in the planet's axis of rotation
This may be because the crater is too shallow to have reached the groundwater reservoir
or because the crater was blasted into the Martian surface after the water in the reservoir was lost
Someday, a crater on Mars may well bear Bradbury's name — but Mars Society President Robert Zubrin had something even grander in mind when he issued a tribute to the author:
"I was saddened today to hear of the death of Ray Bradbury
I first read Bradbury's 'The Martian Chronicles' when I was in elementary school
While science has since shown nearly all the details of Bradbury's Lowellian Mars to have little relationship to reality
I think on a deeper level he was fundamentally right
The human future need not be limited to the Earth
It is from imagination that reality springs
Perhaps one of the first should be named after Ray."
I'm certain that "Bradbury" will be a future destination on Mars
whether it's Bradbury Crater or Bradbury City
Feel free to leave your tributes as comments below

The Catholic Church in Hungary

Hungary’s bishops publicly acknowledged a series of recent Church scandals on Wednesday
“The scandalous news concerning our Church in recent months has caused many to feel uneasy and disappointed … for sins committed
fast and make atonement,” said a statement published on the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference news service Magyar Kurír on 4 December
“The Catholic Church stands with the victims and communities affected
We pray for them and support their healing.”
Although the statement did not name specific events
it followed a series of widely publicised sex scandals and paedophilia allegations in the Archdiocese of Kalocsa-Kecskemét since September
which have also implicated the central administrative structures of the bishops’ conference
The storm around the archdiocese began to break on 6 Sepetmber with the public disgrace of one of its priests
a prominent social media influencer closely identified with the governing Fidesz party via its satellite KDNP (Christian Democratic Peoples’ Party).
Fr Bese had been a vocal supporter of Fidesz’s anti-LGBT agenda
but was found to be living a double life as a participant in gay pornographic films
He was put under disciplinary suspension.
While Bese’s activities involved only consenting adults
the disclosure prompted further revelations about other forms of sexual misconduct in the archdiocese involving minors.
who both also have strong personal ties to Hungary’s ruling parties
face prosecution in the secular courts on charges of child molestation
Gábor R was subjected to a full canonical process by church authorities
Speaking to the Hungarian outlet Válasz Online
the Archbishop of Kalocsa-Kecskemét Balázs Bábel said public awareness of the prosecutions has caused a chain reaction with complainants coming forward with allegations about other clergy
the archbishop’s office has received many more reports than before,” he said
Several other priests of the archdiocese have been suspended while investigations proceed.
Although the scandal only directly concerns the Archdiocese of Kalocsa-Kecskemét
allegations of serious impropriety in handling communications about the affair forced the resignation of the secretary of the national bishops’ conference
the outrage knows no diocesan boundaries,” observed the religious affairs commentator János Reichert
The same day the bishops’ published their statement
Pope Francis received Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the Vatican
Their discussions covered “the commitment of the Catholic Church to the promotion of the development and wellbeing of Hungarian society”
according to a statement from the Holy See

In the first reconstructed, ornate historical room of the Buda Castle, since the celebration of this year's founding of the state, a new St. Stephen's bust from Kalocsa has recently arrived in the St. Stephen's Hall, Várkapitányság writes.
The bust is a real Hungarian masterpiece from the millennium: the bust of St. Stephen, the goldsmith Károly Bachruch, is considered the bust of St. Stephen of Kalocsa. The work was first shown to the general public at the 1896 Millennium National Exhibition.
The body of the reliquary is covered with a gilded coronation mantle, and the head made of silver plates is adorned with a copy of the Holy Crown. The gems and true pearls adorning the crown were selected based on those found on the original crown, using several smaller sapphires, several true pearls, rubies, an amethyst, and a topaz. The statue was made of 48 kg of silver and 2 kg of gold by the goldsmith, according to the Várkapitányság.

At the site of the now-exhibited relic was St. Stephen's great bust made in Rome in 1635, could be seenfor the first time in the capital. Its pedestal was made by the greatest sculptor and architect of the era, Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini. Until 6 December, visitors could admire the priceless Baroque relic borrowed from the treasury of the Zagreb Cathedral.

Details of the bust (Photo: Castle Captain)
The hall of the Buda Palace, named after King St. Stephen, was an outstanding achievement of the Hungarian applied art of the turn of the century. The ornate room, which won a grand prize at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, was designed by Alajos Hauszmann. The wonderful room was completely destroyed in World War II, but was recreated to the smallest detail as originally planned under the National Hauszmann Program.
The St. Stephen's Hall has been admired by more than 35,000 people in recent months, along with the accompanying exhibition, and the popularity of the exhibition has remained unbroken since it opened. The number of foreign guests is also growing steadily, exceeding ten percent of all visitors in November. Most came from southern Europe, Germany and France, but the exhibition is also popular with Indian tourists.

which for more than five decades produced the world-famous hand-painted porcelain
The factory was once one of Kalocsa’s most famous industrial centres
combining traditional Hungarian motifs with high quality porcelain making
The closure of the factory means not only the end of a factory but also the extinction of an entire profession in the region
Although the management of the company did its utmost to survive, Kalocsai Porcelán Ltd
accumulated considerable debts over the years
The biggest problem was the lack of a stable market in Hungary
this was not enough to sustain the operation in the long term
the company even won a tender to promote Kalocsa porcelain on international markets
and at one point regular factory visits were made
Attempts were also made to renew the product portfolio
developing more modern and streamlined product lines
but this did not bring a breakthrough in the market competition
According to Világgazdaság
the fate of the manufactory took a major turn in the 1990s when it was privatised
In 1994 it became privately owned and in 1996 it started to produce its own porcelain as well as painting
Although the new management tried to stabilise the situation
the closure of traditional folk art shops and the downturn caused by the crisis put the manufactory in a difficult situation
it is a miracle that the factory has been able to operate for so long
One of the biggest problems was that small businesses had no organisation that could provide them with temporary financial assistance
One of the most promising opportunities would have been to conquer the Japanese market
but the cost of transporting and packaging the porcelain was so high that mass exports were impossible
Although Japanese tourists were buying from the factory
The company tried to obtain a reduction in VAT on hand-painted products
but this was refused by the relevant authorities
The porcelain was considered an industrial product and therefore did not benefit from any discounts
According to Bónusz Press Kalocsa
the closure will result in the last five workers losing their jobs
including some who have dedicated their lives to porcelain painting
The factory’s local sample shop is currently holding a sale where the last pieces are still available
The owner is reportedly planning to sell the building
but it is not yet known whether there will be an investor who will continue porcelain making
There are speculations that the local promotional gifts company Anda Present could save the factory
Ágnes Szentesi hopes that the factory will be bought by a company that could restart production with the support of the local government and the Chamber of Commerce
the company’s heavy debts make this unlikely
The closure of the Kalocsa Porcelain Manufactory represents a further decline in a long-established Hungarian industry
with the fate of traditional handicraft techniques and porcelain decorated with Kalocsa motifs now in doubt
another piece of Hungary’s industrial heritage may be lost to history

All kidding aside – since most of Hungary just buys IKEA … Unfortunately
that sort of seals it for any local production

the watercourse closure on the new Danube bridge was completed
and the connection between the Paks and Kalocsa banks was established
The construction of the Danube bridge between Kalocsa and Paks has now passed the test loads
which means the bridge was loaded with 800 tonnes
We will soon be able to walk on the 20th Danube bridge
Hungary’s new Danube bridge was tested in spectacular operations over two days. The new crossing between Kalocsa and Paks has already passed the test loads: for the two-day operation, Duna Aszfalt deployed 20 40-tonne trucks, MagyarÉpítők reports
The slab on the 946.2 m long structure, which has 10 supports, was completed in January, and the traditional barrel-rolling took place in March (according to colas.hu
celebrating the completion of a bridge by rolling a barrel across the deck is a longstanding tradition)
The bridge is composed of two floodplain bridges (ártéri híd) and a river bridge (mederhíd)
The three parts have different structural systems but form a single unit
The Ministry of Construction and Transport (Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium
ÉKM) said that the recently completed project element started on Friday
the testing of the left and right floodplain bridges was carried out with 8 trucks weighing 40 tonnes each
the static and dynamic tests of the middle bridge element were carried out as part of an all-day project
the vehicles spent long minutes in numerous formations
the experts measured the deformations caused by the weight and the stresses in the individual structural elements at predetermined points on the bridge structure
the sinking of the supports and the natural frequency of the structure were also investigated
The dynamic load was a much busier and shorter measurement event than the previous ones, with two trucks crossing the bridge at speeds of 5, 20, 40, and 60 km/h. Check out some impressive photos of the testing HERE
The technical handover procedure for the Kalocsa-Paks Danube bridge and the 14.3 km road connected to it will be completed at the end of May
followed shortly after by the opening ceremony
a name already agreed to by construction minister János Lázár
one of the chief commanders of the Hungarian army at the Battle of Mohács
He took the archbishop’s post because his two brides had died
It was with great difficulty that he accepted the title of commander-in-chief of the Hungarian army
According to szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu, there’s a photographer in Kalocsa
who decided to capture his favourite city the way he loves it
But Tibor “Töce” Török doesn’t only take photos
He tries to capture everything that’s important so that there will be a documentation our descendants may look at
So that there will be a collection which records what Kalocsa was like in 2016
The best part is that he publishes his daily photos on kalografia.hu and the project’s Facebook page. This project
is quite unique; not many people dare to commit themselves to something like this
the photographer is definitely the first to do this in Kalocsa
Kalocsa looks back on an outstanding historic past
It has been a city since the Settlement of the Magyars
and one of the most significant cultural centres of Hungarians since King Stephen
The city is a Catholic Archdiocese and the second centre of Hungarian Catholicism since the foundation of the state
the archiepiscopal palace and the astronomic observatory
you can also discover treasures in the downtown area
The city is probably best known for its famous paprika
the following breath-taking photos will demonstrate its diversity
“The point of my project titled The treasures of Kalocsai Sárköz is to capture the precious treasures of Kalocsa and its 30-40 km vicinity for posterity
which do not look beautiful from the outside
but used to be important places in former ages
He finds it really important to preserve these wonders for posterity
He is fascinated by history and how Kalocsa looked like at the turn of the century
He tries to stay away from tourist schemed photos and incorporate his own visual world and colours
and to take environmental effects into consideration when taking the photos
These are the aspects that give the sentimental side of the photos
Pouring rain or clouds all add up to a photo that we feel is almost talking to us and to a photo evoking strong feelings in us

Kalocsa is one of the oldest and most charming towns in Hungary
which is usually associated with the aromatic paprika used for seasoning
Kalocsa is also famous for its flamboyant folk art
the Hungarian Cultural Centre London in partnership with KrisztinaDesign exhibits the folk art of this versatile city the same weekend as the Festival of Paprika in Kalocsa takes place
The Kalocsa exhibition will include workshops and interactive activities as well as a video screening showing the beautiful town of Kalocsa and its folk art
Visitors will be able to try on traditional costumes from the region and try their hands at embroidery and painting porcelain with the help of a professional painter
The hand-decorated porcelain on display is created and sponsored by the Porcelain Manufactory of Kalocsa (www.porcelanfesto.hu)
This manufactory has been producing porcelain since 1971 with the help of highly skilled and talented craftswomen
Once the astonishing patterns are painted on the goods
The completed products are then ready to turn the dull days into a celebration
The folk art of the town started to unfold at the end of the 18th century with furniture decoration
followed by the techniques of daubing and embroidery
The motifs were created by pattern designers
The colourful embroidery began to spread around the 1920s
which resulted in the application of more and more colours
The designs of the embroidery are continuously changing and they are being refined as the tradition and skills spread from generation to generation
The approach of wall flower painting was first mentioned in several notes around the end of the 1800s
Wonderful motley flowers were painted on a blue base and the most commonly used motif was a tulip and a rose
the flowers on the artworks became more outlined and dense
Also the compositions were converted into more colourful and heavier arrangements
After the Second World War the techniques of daubing on walls began to fade

“The new bridge linking Kalocsa to Paks is part of a complex
long-term national development and nation-building plan”
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at the inauguration of the Tomori Pál Bridge in Kalocsa on Thursday
The Prime Minister is convinced that the importance of the southern Hungarian regions will increase in the future and that the trade between Serbia and Hungary will play a key role in this
making this region the “gateway to the West”
the M6 motorway will be taken to the border
linking the Croatian-Slavonian areas with Hungary
Orbán also pointed out that two of the country’s most important strategic investments will be built in this region: the new nuclear power plant will be built in Paks
and the Budapest-Belgrade railway line will be built not far from Kalocsa
which is one of the most important building blocks of the Hungarian nation-building programme
The flood water level of the river Danube is currently at its peak near Nagybajcs
and it is expected to peak in Budapest early on Saturday
the national water management directorate OVF said on Thursday
A floodgate has been closed at the river mouth of the Moson-Danube in order to reduce pressure on the affected stretch and guarantee the safety of Gyor
Some 317 people have been involved in flood prevention in the Szigetkoz area
Passing boats have been alerted to stay as far as possible from the riverbank in order to minimise the effect of the waves they generate
The water level is expected to peak in Budapest around 10-20 cm under the level of the lower embankment
No considerable rain was reported in the German and Austrian water catchment areas of the river Danube in the past 24 hours
then this real speciality from Kalocsa might be for you
The inventor of this new speciality is Dávid Németh
a young entrepreneur who would like to promote the reputation of Kalocsa nationwide with his latest creation
According to HelloVidék
the restrictions introduced since November
and the takeaway system as a survival strategy for catering establishments
have provided a good base for making a unique coffee speciality that can be tasted not only in cafes
even in the event of restrictions that may remain in the long term
they could ensure more opportunities to taste the coffee from Kalocsa
The manager of the coffee shop also talked about the difficulties caused by the epidemic: the closure of the store and the loss of customers
emphasising that the delivery system is not feasible for the cafes in the long-term
which is why a novelty that could boost the business was needed so much
“Coffee-drinking itself is a social activity that is typically done by two
but since currently you can’t sit and consume your coffee either indoors or outdoors
said Dávid Németh about the long-standing situation of coffee shops
he also revealed the idea that had served as the basis for the new speciality
saying that the secret is in the grind itself
I put the cinnamon or the paprika in the grind and never in the bottom of the glass
This should be thought of as cooking soup: with water
talking about the process of coffee making with a very apposite analogy
the project has not stopped here yet; there are two other coffee specialities currently in the experimentation phase
The coffee of Kalocsa is much more than a usual coffee for breakfast spiced up with some ground paprika
A lot depends on the selection of the two main ingredients
since the result also varies greatly depending on which ones we use
which can be compromised upon but is not worth doing so
it was important for the coffee shop owners to reach an agreement with a producer who could guarantee consistent
Perhaps a small producer could occasionally offer a better grind than a big one
the taste and quality of the coffee will also fluctuate
and the coffee makers of Kalocsa would like to avoid that
It is just as important to work with the finest coffee grind possible
He also added that the very important extra element of the recipe is a little bit of brown sugar that brings out the aroma of paprika in both the sweet and spicy versions
that their main purpose is not to make a profit
but to provide a real domestic experience from Kalocsa for their customers
what should the person who decides to taste this exceptional coffee served in nice porcelain from Kalocsa expect
“If someone has only been drinking cappuccino so far
this is not the coffee they loved x years ago
I recommend it to those who want to try something new
or to bring something special to their morning and afternoon coffee”
recommends the manager of the local coffee shop
