Hungarian football legend who led his side to the historic 6-3 thrashing of England at Wembley in 1953
The remarkable footballing career of Ferenc Puskas, who has died aged 79 in Budapest, falls into two parts. The first was as the outstanding captain of a remarkable Hungarian team - once called "the best team in the world" by England's Billy Wright - which he led to the World Cup finals of 1954. The second was as a star of Real Madrid from 1958 to 1966
The watershed was the Hungarian revolution of 1956 when
Puskas and other Hungarian internationals were on tour with Honved
the army club into which most of them had been drafted
possessed of a left foot of astonishing power
Puskas was born in Budapest and brought up in the nearby country town of Kispest. The son of a footballer, he kicked a ball about in the streets with, among others, the future Hungary right-half
and admired such foreign stars as Charlie Buchan
Ted Drake and Spain's celebrated goalkeeper
Nicknamed "Ocsi" (little brother)
Puskas was coached at the Kispest club by Nandor Szucs and made his debut in November 1943 against the then league leaders
Puskas perfected his ball skills by endlessly juggling with a tennis ball
At 18 he won the first of his 84 caps for Hungary
Puskas was commissioned in the army - hence his eventual nickname
a brilliant Hungarian team was kept under wraps behind the Iron Curtain
but in the summer of 1952 it finally emerged to waltz through the Olympic football tournament in Budapest
They beat Yugoslavia 2-0 in the final and although Puskas missed a penalty
In May 1953 Hungary took part in the first game to be played in the new Olympic stadium in Rome with a superb performance
they came to London and thrashed England 6-3
becoming the first foreign team to beat England on English soil
one coming when he coolly pulled the ball back with the sole of his boot so that
in the words of Geoffrey Green in the Times
the English captain Billy Wright rushed past him "like a fire engine going to the wrong fire"
Inevitably, Hungary were favourites to win the World Cup in Switzerland in June 1954
not been injured in a tackle by the German centre-half
This might have been the kick that won West Germany the cup final
Hungary regrouped to great effect but when the team eventually reached the final
with Hungary 3-2 behind after squandering a 2-0 lead
he raced through the opposing defence to score what looked like a perfectly good goal
an increasingly tubby but still marvellously effective Puskas struck up a famous partnership with the Argentine centre-forward
Puskas became the leading Spanish goalscorer four times
Both he and Di Stefano triumphed in the European Cup final of 1960 in Hampden Park
where Eintracht Frankfurt were demolished 7-3
Puskas would get another three in the European Cup final in Amsterdam against Benfica
but the goal Puskas scored when Di Stefano cleverly put him through from the halfway line was as good as any of those scored that night
It was reported that at the end of the match
Puskas took off his jersey and gave it to Eusebio
the young Mozambique inside-right whose thunderous right foot was the equal of Puskas's left
But Puskas subsequently denied that he had presented his shirt to anybody
he played for Spain in the World Cup finals in Chile
where he was used in three games at centre-forward
lamenting happier days with Real and Hungary when goals were easier to come by
I have an engaging memory of him when Chile won third place in Santiago
With the Chilean fans celebrating in the streets of the capital
Puskas was to be glimpsed standing in a doorway
wearing that Budapest urchin grin which would never desert him
he returned with distinction to Wembley to play for the Fifa XI which met England
celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Football Association
Still capable of scoring five goals against Holland's Feyenoord as late as 1965
he retired the following year and went to Canada to coach Vancouver
He was said to have demoralised the club's goalkeepers with the power of his shooting
Subsequently he became manager of Panathinaikos of Athens
and got them to Wembley for the European Cup final of 1971
After the collapse of communism in eastern Europe
In 1999 he was voted the sixth best player of the 20th century
He had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for some years

FootballLa Ligaicon of the game Adored by Fergie and nearly signed by Manchester United: The legendary genius of Ferenc PuskasBy Billy HawkinsPublished: 9:00
one of the all-time footballing greats was born
But Ferenc Puskas wouldn’t want you to know that
he didn’t want anybody to know he was born on April Fool’s Day; Puskas destroyed every record of his birth that he could
with his passport all that remained to prove his real birth date
Puskas avoided the dressing room banter and could instead brand his Hungary teammate Zoltan Czibor
Puskas would not entirely escape the unforgiving atmosphere of the dressing room
He joined Real Madrid and was given the nickname ‘fatso’ by Alfredo di Stefano
who saw an overweight and over the hill footballer
Born in Budapest to footballer Ferenc Purczeld
Puskas grew up in Kispest as his father played for the local team
It was the elder Ferenc – who changed his surname to Puskas in 1937 – who developed his son as a sportsman and later managed him as Kispest’s head coach
The younger Puskas was still a teenager when the local press branded his father Ferenc Puskas Senior; as Gyorgy Szollosi writes in his excellent book Puskas: “For Hungarians
the name [Puskas] applied exclusively to his 16-year-old son.”
Puskas joined Kispest at the age of 12 with his father part of the coaching staff; his senior debut came four years later
in a November 1943 match against Nagyvaradi AC
but under the tutelage of Puskas Senior from 1945 onwards they Improved and achieved four consecutive top four finishes
combined with Puskas and teammate Jozsef Bozsik’s influence in the national side
was largely the reason Kispest were taken over by the Hungarian Ministry of Defence to become the Army team when the country became a communist state in 1949; the village of Kispest was absorbed into Budapest and the club was renamed Budapesti Honved SE
Army conscription allowed Honved to raid their rivals for Hungary’s best players
all but used the club as a training camp; Puskas won five league titles with the side
who eventually boasted national team regulars Sandor Kocsis
as well as Puskas and Bozsik who were there during the Kispest days
With the core of the national squad playing together at club level as well
it is no surprise Sebes worked wonders with Hungary to build the Aranycsapat (Golden Team); also referred to as the Mighty or Magical Magyars
this was the side which dominated the early 1950s and inflicted two huge defeats on England
but had their destiny stolen away from them as Germany came from two goals down to beat Hungary and win the 1954 World Cup final in the Miracle of Bern
The games against England – defeating the Three Lions 6-3 at Wembley in November 1953 and 7-1 in Budapest six months later – have gone down in history
The initial game is still considered one of England’s most embarrassing defeats ever
and it is regarded as the event which made this country wake up to what was happening in football on the continent
The insular English viewpoint from this moment in time can be summed up by captain Billy Wright’s comment to striker Stan Mortensen as he walked onto the pitch after seeing Hungary’s unorthodox shirts and boots: “We should be all right here
“they haven’t even brought the proper kit.”
in perhaps the most famous moment of his entire career
Hungary took the lead inside the first minute
and he added a second 19 minutes later as England could not deal with a tactic they had never come up against before; Hidegkuti was deployed between the lines
in what would now be considered the attacking midfield role; at the time it was revolutionary
As Wright rushed towards Puskas in an attempt to tackle him
the forward dragged the ball back in a remarkable show of genius; Wright ended up on the floor and Puskas fired the ball home
correspondent Geoffrey Green wrote Wright ‘rushed past [Puskas] like a fire engine going to the wrong fire’
while the Daily Mirror opined ‘Wright has never been given such a chasing in all his life as the one he got from Ferenc Puskas’
Puskas scored a second three minutes later with Hidegkuti later completing his hat-trick and Bozsik also getting on the scoreheet
In the foreword to Szollosi’s book Sir Alex Ferguson
writes: “The great players do things that you don’t expect
so when I dodged school on that Wednesday afternoon in 1953 to watch the England vs Hungary match at a misty Wembley on TV
no one expected what we were about to witness: a new way of playing football
Puskas again ran England ragged with another brace
it all came crashing down for Hungary; Germany’s comeback in the Miracle of Bern meant they missed out on their crowning glory – winning the World Cup
the wins and dominance of European football continued after the World Cup
but at the end of 1956 the Golden Team was broken up; the Hungarian Revolution erupted in Budapest and the Honved players
Some of the greatest footballers of the era were left in limbo
‘once more there was great excitement and anticipation in Scotland when several of the Hungarian players turned up at the British Embassy looking for asylum after the Uprising in their homeland in 1956’
Fergie himself writes of the Scottish papers going crazy and linking Puskas with Celtic and Rangers
He nearly joined Sir Alex’s future club Manchester United in fact
but the signing was scuppered due to the Football League’s maximum wage policy; players could earn only £18-a-week at this time
and not until January 1961 was the rule abolished
Puskas was off the market by then; a few months after his proposed move to Old Trafford fell through
Real Madrid signed him and he was earning £800-a-week
But for all the history he would write in Madrid
it’s not to say Real necessarily wanted Puskas in the first place
had watched Puskas in his penultimate game for Hungary; against France in October 1956
just days before the start of the Hungarian Revolution; and it’s widely considered he put in a woeful performance
after incessant arguing from Emil Ostreicher
Bernabeu relented and invited Puskas – who
‘looked like a giant balloon’ - in for a meeting
turning his back on gluttony; he never lost his confidence to play football
Puskas was forced to run laps while the rest of the squad trained with the ball
the greatest of all great Real Madrid players
didn’t really understand the hype; ‘fatso’ he branded Puskas; but before long the pair had formed a formidable partnership
Puskas even knew how to keep his teammate on side; in the final match of his debut season he had the chance to score
with the two players joint leading scorers heading into the match
though Carniglia never favoured him; he left a supposedly injured Puskas out of the team for the 1959 European Cup final
which Real Madrid won to claim their fourth successive title and second under the manager
Puskas watched the match from the stands and was asked by Bernabeu why he wasn’t playing; in response
but come the new season Real Madrid had a new manager; Carniglia was sacked despite winning two European Cups and LaLiga in just two years; the decision to drop Puskas had cost him his job
There is little else to write that has not previously been recorded about the remainder of Puskas’ time in Madrid
Eight seasons brought a return of 156 goals in 180 league games
and 35 goals in 38 European appearances; he helped fire Real to five LaLiga titles
one Copa del Rey and the Intercontinental Cup
He regularly scored hat-tricks – hitting two against Barcelona – and also made a habit of netting four or five times a game; undoubtedly his most famous four-goal haul came in the 1960 European Cup final
when Di Stefano also scored a hat-trick as Real beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3
Widely regarded as perhaps the greatest football match of all time
Ferguson was present at Hampden Park to watch Puskas in action; he saw the now 33-year-old score four times but give the match ball to Erwin Stein
the Eintracht forward who had netted two of the German side’s three goals
Puskas was again banging in the goals in a European Cup final; but his hat-trick was not enough to down Benfica
who won 5-3 in Amsterdam with a 20-year-old Eusebio grabbing a brace
Puskas sought out the youngster after the final whistle and handed over his shirt; it was the mantle being passed from Europe’s greatest player of one era to that of another era
and he enjoyed success in guiding Panathinaikos to the 1971 European Cup final; but that is just a footnote to a legendary playing career
Honved’s and Real Madrid’s greatest ever players
Ferguson got to witness Puskas’ genius in the flesh
“I was fortunate to have seen him play and he was without question one of the greatest players of all time
It was an honour to have met his wife Erzsebet recently when I visited Hungary and I was impressed at how humble she was

Before going into details, let’s take a moment to clarify who we are talking about
The founders of Barber Shop Budapest are all members of the Gellei Family
a multigenerational clan of Budapest barbers – decades ago
the grandfather had a parlor in Kispest before moving to Váci Street
then his son had a haircut shop on Bartók Béla Avenue
opened their unique styling establishment in the city center after a stint of living in Australia
After opening their first Barber Shop on Dob Street with great success
they expanded to a new location on Király Street
and most recently opened a new site by Astoria
“Our service has swiftly risen in popularity
since the profession was long absent from Budapest
barbers not only cut hair and shaved beards
We dropped the latter of those three services
and focus on men’s heads with classic techniques like using a straight razor and aftershave
There is a real demand for this these days,” says elder brother András
The third Barber Shop also opened near the party district of Pest
András explains that tourists are purposefully browsing barber shops
and the Gallei Family’s establishments give them everything they are looking for
The guest is given a welcome drink – a water or a coffee – and the new location by Astoria also features a huge brown chair in the shop window
where waiting customers can get a shoeshine
All three locations are similar in terms of their interior design and vibe
Their walls are adorned with surfboards (a memento from the brothers’ time in Australia)
and museum-quality vintage scissors and barber tools
The wooden furniture gives a unique look to the new shop
which also features old-school-style barber chairs made specifically for thechain
and have a built-in sink to make the experience all the more comfortable for guest and barber alike
and this novelty makes the process simpler by eliminating the need to walk the guest to a sink
There are plans to include tattooing among the services
and the owners are going to start a barber school called Barber Shop Budapest & Academy
for the time being this is only for the benefit of the current team and barbers from abroad.) A couple of days every week
the shop will close early for practice and to experiment with new ideas
since they perfectly complement each other
orchestrates everything from the background
with exceptions made only for female members of the Gellei Family
You don’t need to worry about making an appointment: this practice is simply not a barbers’ thing
Guests are attended to first-come-first-served
or a chat with the others – like at any gentlemen’s club
We have a feeling that this won’t be the last Barber Shop Budapest location
With record passenger numbers of 17 million expected in 2020, despite a higher frequency of bus services, Budapest Airport still needs a swift
Plans are now in place for an express rail link of 22 kilometres
the southern terminus of the M3 metro line
about the same distance again south-east of the Hungarian capital
public transport from Budapest Airport will be limited to the 100E bus direct to the city centre and the 200E stopping service to the southern end of the M3 metro route
this runs further into town at Nagyvárad tér due to construction work on the line – any suggestion of extending the network all the way to the airport is now null and void
For more details of how to get from Budapest Airport to town, see here
Ideas about constructing high-speed underground trains in Hungary date back to the 19th century
each of which contained a north-south line
an east-west connection became more important
The metro was a prestigious project of the Rákosi Era
which aimed to alleviate some of the capital's serious traffic problems at the time
construction of the east-west metro resumed in the 1960s
and in 1968 a final decision was reached regarding the north-south line
The first stage was opened in 1976 (Photo: Fortepan
the 14,8 km line was planned to be completed 1985
but changes in the economy and transport policy brought changes to both the route and the deadline
Kőbánya-Kispest became the southern terminus (although this was intended as a temporary solution
Kőbánya-Kispest would have become a sub-branch
and Határ Road station was built in a way which ensured the metro could be continued at any time.)
Plan of the Budapest Metro Network in 1974 (Photo: Fortepan/Uvaterv)
Káposztásmegyer became the planned destination in the north
increasing the length of the line to over 20 kilometres
Sections were completed one after the other from 1976 onwards
In 1976 the line between Deák and Nagyvárad Squares was completed
which was extended to Kőbánya-Kispest in 1980
Work finished on the section to Lehet Square (Élmunkás Square at the time) in 1982
and in 1984 the tunnel reached Árpád Bridge
The section to Újpest was completed after a six-year hiatus
On 15 December 1990 the daily Magyar Nemzet reported:
"Budapest metro network expanded with new section today Following the opening of continuation of the north-south line
the well-known trains will now run along the new section from Árpád Bridge to Bajcsy Zsilinszky Road in Újpest
Csaba Siklós opened the new section – which cost 10 billion HUF at a ceremony on Friday afternoon."
the present form of the line was completed 30 years ago
Plans had been made for it to run to the housing estate in Káposztásmegyer in the north
Space for the metro was even left open during the construction of the estate
tram 14 was created as a metro replacement service
but by 1990 – when the metro reached Újpest – the construction of the South Buda – Rákospalota metro came into focus

The ornamentation of the Budapest metro falls behind that of Moscow lines that influenced it (though Stalin-baroque stations were planned for the east-west line in the 1950s)
the stations were designed according to an overarching concept
The colour scheme of the new stations was determined by an expert body
taking into account the existing differences of the three underground railways of the time
The aim of the design was for the colours and symbols in metro stations to indicate which section of the city a passenger was in
referring to the Hungarian National Colour Committee
"The system of forms and colours indicate which metro line a passenger is travelling on and where they are in the city
The regions and metro lines of Budapest have been colour-coded
Similarly to the symbols for the lines themselves
stations are indicated by circles on the north-south line
squares on the east-west line and triangles on the small underground railway."
It is no coincidence that the north-south metro line is known as the blue line
The colour scheme of the four new stations also aligned with this concept
The station on Forgách Street was Coventry blue
Újpest városkapu was painted Copenhagen blue
Circles appeared on the walls of the stations (Photo: metros.hu)
The four-station section runs in a cut-and-cover tunnel as the line follows the route of Váci Road
A significant lack of finances hampered construction
Pro Urbe Award-winning Professor Endre Kerkápoly
that if the necessary funds had been available when construction began
the section would have been completed by 1988

we string them together for a walk of about 6-7 miles
during which we get a view of the district parks
It is worth noting now that it is astonishing how big and what kind of forests the outer districts of Pest often have
It is also true that in recent years it is as if something is starting to change
which is the most important step for the proper maintenance and utilization of an urban forest
We start our discovery walk on Gilice Square
there are several buses coming directly from Kőbánya-Kispest railway station
but the forests can also be reached from Pestszentimre railway station or by trams from Üllői Road
It can be seen that the many small parks and the Péterhalmi Forest can be explored from several directions
From Gilice Square we were the first to head north to Bókay Garden on Cziffra György Road
as this small fenced park provides several interesting things based on our preliminary knowledge
we could state that there is a significant opportunity for social and sports life here: an ice rink
a sandy BMX track and a skating rink under construction await visitors
Entrance to the garden (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
Adventure park with a plane (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
several tennis courts and a small outdoor theatre
There is also an indoor restaurant and summer bar
the diversity and orderliness of the park is an absolute positive surprise
It is also difficult to list the many sports fields and recreational opportunities (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
The BMX and skate park under construction (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
There is also a small lake inside the park
Bókay Garden is a worthy counterpoint to the infamous Havanna microdistrict
it is also true that the Havanna microdistrict is not the same as in the old days
Outside the garden fence is a small hill on the west side
but that’s all we have to settle for here now
The Lajos Tomory Museum of the district municipality is also worth visiting
The panorama from the hill of Turul Park (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
which can be reached on Benedekfalva Street within a few minutes ’walk
From this street you can also see to the east a nice big white sphere on some feet
as it is an important meteorological measuring station and even the main meteorological observatory in the capital: the György Marczell Main Observatory
The Pál Ambrózy Meteorological Study Trail has also been established in its garden
There are many programs on the night of the museums
but of course you can visit at other times
which tries to attract visitors from afar (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
then immediately turning right onto Mályinka Street
we can see the edge of the Péterhalmi Forest on our right
It is the best known and largest forest in the district
We soon reach one of the main entrances to the forest
a children’s playground and a small wooden hut
A smaller car park has also been built for those arriving by car
it is advisable for them to park their car here
There is a green area perfect for a picnic
The leisure park at the entrance to the forest (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
If we go further in the rather worn yellow tourist sign
we will find ourselves in the depths of the forest
The dense forest (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
We also cross the route designated for running and then reach a more open section
Here the sandy forest soil from the alluvium of the Danube emerges clearly
Information boards can be found alongside the road
and vandalism can be seen in action here as well
there are many information and knowledge boards (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
then turning right into the depths of the forest after a few hundred meters we notice an interesting phenomenon: a lot of plastic bag remains on the top of the trees
At first we didn’t know what to think about
but then we saw an industrial site in the middle of the forest and its yard: a lot of plastic waste was waiting for its fate
A higher fence might have been possible so as not to pollute the forest to such an extent…
Nature has already taken possession of the railways (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
Plastic "crop" on the trees (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
and after another kilometre we reach the southern main entrance of the Péterhalmi forest: here again there are football fields
information boards and even a beach volleyball court
ideal for the above-mentioned sandy ground
we end up at the southwestern tip of the forest
actually walking down the street that opens into a forest
But let's not expect many other curiosities besides nature
The southern edge of the forest is also the city border towards Gyál
There is still a playground and some information boards
The Kapocsi Road forest is worth the small detour (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
The Pestszentimre railway station is not far from here
from where you can return to the Kőbánya-Kispest railway station
Here is the largest memorial park in the district
but at the same time it was very heartbreaking to see that names of people can be read up close in each small brick cube
The '56 Memorial Park (Photo: Dávid Palotás / pestbuda.hu)
During our trip we went through several parks and forests of the 18th district
The Péterhalmi Forest actually separates Pestszentlőrinc from Pestszentimre
The old industrial tracks connecting the two main railway lines cut the forest in two
but the industrial plant in the middle of the forest is the problem with the pollution already mentioned
it seems that the sacrificial work of local NGOs is paying off
as they are also trying to defend the forest against vandalism
We have seen that the park forests offer a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors
The flat terrain is definitely favourable in this respect
Forest management is carried out by Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt
it can be said that a day trip and a city tour is worth a visit to the 18th District and the Bókay Garden offers a variety of recreational opportunities for those interested in sports and culture
while the meteorological observatory delights those interested in natural sciences

train services at Budapest’s Nyugati railway station were severely disrupted due to a switch failure caused by a shunting train
The malfunction led to restrictions imposed by MÁV
affecting several suburban and intercity routes
Passengers experienced extended travel times and service reductions on key lines
with alternative public transport options temporarily accepting train tickets
The malfunction significantly impacted trains operating between Nyugati railway station and Kőbánya-Kispest, leading to prolonged journey times and altered routes. As a temporary solution, MÁV announced that train tickets would be valid on alternative Budapest public transport lines
Several services faced cancellations or modifications:
MÁV announced that the switch failure at Nyugati railway station had been repaired
and normal service was expected to resume gradually on the Cegléd and Lajosmizse lines
train tickets remained valid on affected BKK routes until 10:30 AM to accommodate passengers still experiencing disruptions

George F. Hemingway was not bluffing when he was asked about the selling of Honvéd last week. As reported by sportfaktor.hu
on Monday morning the club confirmed that the investor company belonging to the Metalcom group
has acquired 100% of the club’s shares from Quinex America LLC
which is a subsidiary of The Hemingway Group
In addition to making sure Ferenc Puskás former club continues to generate profit
the company wants to further improve youth development and finish high enough in the league table to reach European club competitions’ qualifiers
Hemingway bought the club in 2006 via one of his investment companies that is based in Nevada
Honvéd was a shadow of its former glory – in the two preceding seasons they finished in the bottom half of the table
which includes winning 5 titles in the 1950s under the captaincy of Ferenc Puskás
Under Hemingway’s tenure Honvéd won the 2007 and 2009 editions of the Hungarian Cup and the Hungarian League title in 2017
The acquisition price will remain undisclosed by both parties
“Our aim is clear; we want to develop even more future players at Magyar Futball Akadémia
who will later join the senior team from where they can become successful internationally
but Hungarian football in general too ” emphasised Zoltán Bozó and Dr
also finds it important to maintain stability while setting more and more ambitious goals over the coming years: “Few people know that Honvéd was able to achieve its recent successes while also staying profitable
Alongside continuing to accomplishing targets on the pitch
it is just as important to maintain financial stability and increase profits from the transfer market
This is the only way the club can compete for European places and the title in the future”

is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history
Known as the “Galloping Major,” Puskás was a prolific goal scorer and a charismatic leader whose career spanned decades of brilliance
played a significant role in shaping his career
the family adopted the surname “Puskás,” and Ferenc began playing for Kispest Honvéd at just 12 years old under the pseudonym “Miklós Kovács” to bypass age restrictions
Puskás made his senior debut in 1943 and quickly established himself as a scoring sensation, MLSZ said
Kispest had transformed into Budapest Honvéd under the Hungarian Ministry of Defense
and Puskás earned the rank of major—hence his famous nickname
he won five Hungarian league titles and was the league’s top scorer four times
Puskás became a cornerstone of Hungary’s national team during its golden era in the 1950s
Known internationally as the “Mighty Magyars” or locally as Aranycsapat (“Golden Team”)
Puskás debuted for Hungary in 1945 and scored an incredible 84 goals in just 85 matches—a record that remains one of the highest scoring ratios in international football
including winning gold at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 and defeating England 6–3 at Wembley Stadium in the “Match of the Century” in 1953
Hungary fell short in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final
losing to West Germany in a dramatic upset
Following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956
Puskás chose not to return to Hungary and faced a two-year ban from UEFA competitions
his career rebounded spectacularly when he joined Real Madrid in 1958 at the age of 31
Puskás became an integral part of one of football’s most successful eras
five consecutive La Liga titles (1961–1965)
His scoring prowess was unmatched; he netted seven goals across two European Cup finals and won four Pichichi awards as La Liga’s top scorer
Puskás embarked on a global coaching journey that spanned continents
His most notable achievement came with Panathinaikos in Greece
leading them to the European Cup final in 1971 and securing two domestic league titles
He also managed clubs and national teams across countries like Spain
Ferenc Puskás left an indelible mark on football history
Scoring over 800 goals across official matches during his career
he was named by IFFHS as the greatest top division scorer of the 20th century
His sportsmanship and leadership inspired generations
Hungary’s national stadium was renamed Puskás Arena in his honor in recognition of his contributions
FIFA also commemorated him by naming its annual award for the best goal after him—the FIFA Puskás Award
but his legacy continues to shine brightly
As we celebrate what would have been his 98th birthday today
we remember not only his incredible achievements but also his enduring impact on football worldwide
inventors and many others did and discovered great things from the Rubik’s cube to the Vitamin C
his name is well-known from Argentina to Japan and from Australia to the United States
Born to a German (Danube Swabian) family in a suburb
he showed great talent for football already when he was young
even though he did not reach the minimum age (12)
he could play in the local club with his childhood friend
József Bozsik who became a member of the Hungarian Golden Team
He made his first senior appearance for Kispest in November 1943 in a match against Nagyváradi AC
It was there where he got the nickname “Öcsi” or “Buddy” because he was not too tall and was very young
Kispest became the team of the Hungarian Army during the Communist dictatorship
The club acquired the best Hungarian players of that time
He also finished as a top goal scorer in the league in 1947–48
he debuted in 1945 against Austria when they won 5:2
He played 85 games and scored 84 times for Hungary
he formed the nucleus of the Golden Team that was to remain unbeaten for 32 consecutive games between 1950 and 1954
beating Yugoslavia 2–0 in the final in Helsinki
Puskás scored four times at the Olympic tournament
first with a 6–3 win at Wembley Stadium on the “match of the century” and then 7–1 in Budapest
Puskás scored two goals in each game against England
Here are the highlights on what happened in the Wembley Stadium
they lost first against West-Germany in the finals of the 1954 Switzerland Football World Cup
HERE we summed up what happened in Bern while below you can watch a video about the highlights of the Hungarian team in the world cup:
Among those was Puskás who went first to Italy then to Spain but could not play because the FIFA banned him from playing for 18 months
During that time he managed to get his family out from Hungary occupied by the Soviet forces
after the ban finished and even though he was overweight
He helped Real win La Liga five times in a row between 1961 and 1965 and the Copa del Generalísimo in 1962
He scored both goals in the 2–1 victory over Sevilla FC in the Copa final
Puskás took Spanish nationality and subsequently played four times for Spain
Three of these games were at the 1962 World Cup
He finished his professional career at the age of 39 in 1966
Here is a cartoon movie about Ferenc Puskás:
he guided Panathinaikos of Greece to the European Cup final
the only time a Greek club has reached a European final to date
his only other success came with South Melbourne Hellas
with whom he won the Australian National Soccer League title in 1991
he took charge of the Hungarian national football team for four games
including a 4–2 friendly victory against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin
where Hungary came from two goals down to beat their opponents eventually
Below he does the first kick against Australia in 1997:
he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease
spent his last years in hospitals and died on 17 November 2006 of pneumonia
Today not only streets and football clubs bear his name but also the new Puskás Aréna in Budapest
discovered by Krisztián Sárneczky and Gyula M
Szabó was also named in his honour in 2001
Ferenc Puskás was the best Hungarian footballer
widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time
He scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for Hungary
and 514 goals in 529 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues
Puskas.com remembers the biggest Hungarian football player:
I loved my family and I would always be on the pitch; nothing else interested me” – Puskás
The most well-known and popular Hungarian person was born in Budapest on 1st April 1927
Following the birth of their first child the family moved from the city to Kispest where the father Ferenc Puskás senior got a job and a contract to be a semi-professional footballer
Coincidentally Öcsi and his family lived next door to the local football pitch in one of the modest flats consisting of only a room and a kitchen
One of the neighbours was the Bozsik family including József
the child who was a year and a half older than Öcsi and with whom he would be newsworthy the world over as members of the Honvéd club and Hungary national team
The local kids would play street football competitions against teams from neighbouring districts using a home-made football made of rags and the most talented young footballers such as the little Puskás would be recruited for the Kispest youth team
for the most part under the guidance of Puskás senior who was by then a coach at the club
They loved the game so much that even during the time of the 2nd World War they would do everything they could to play football in the leagues connected with the main national youth association
even though the sport had been paralysed in most parts of the country
Öcsi had already made his full debut for Kispest in the national football league’s top tier (NBI) in 1943 and as soon as the war was over he received his first call-up for the Hungary national team’s first post-war international match
At the age of 20-22 years old Puskás was already attracting the attention of star clubs from the West
but emotionally he was so close to Kispest that it never occurred to him to move abroad
Puskás stayed and in 1952 travelled to Helsinki with the national team; there
The following year Hungary beat Italy to win the Dr Gerő Cup, the forerunner of the UEFA European Championship. Also in 1953, Hungary beat England in the ‘match of the century’ to become the first team from outside the British Isles to beat England at home
The team won all its subsequent matches until the World Cup final the following year when it unexpectedly and extremely unluckily suffered defeat at the hands of West Germany
so Puskás was ‘only’ presented with a silver medal from the FIFA President rather than the World Cup itself
and in 1952 their only child Anikó was born in Budapest
Meanwhile the national team under Puskás’ captaincy recovered from the World Cup final loss and embarked on another successful run
The 1956 uprising changed everything though; when Öcsi and the rest of his Honvéd teammates left the country at the end of that November
they could not have thought that some of them would not return home for several decades
so it was to nearly everyone’s surprise when he received a contract offer from Real Madrid
At the age of 31 he again strained every sinew; he lost 18 kilograms in weight and despite the initial difficulties
came to earn a place for himself in a Real Madrid team full of world stars
It is almost unbelievable that for ten more years he was able to stay as a world-class superstar in Europe’s most successful club
Due to the political dogma of the time he was not able to continue performing for the Hungary national team
but even today his statistic of 84 goals in 85 matches is still a world record
Puskás’ incredible goalscoring records were followed by newer feats even harder to eclipse; in the 1960 and 1962 European Cup finals he scored four and three goals respectively and after finishing top goalscorer four times in Hungarian league seasons he managed the feat four times in Spain too
achievements which led to him being recognised as the greatest goalscorer of all time
being afforded a measure of moral satisfaction by way of being appointed the Hungary national team interim head coach for four matches before going on to represent the Hungarian Football Federation and the Hungarian government as a leader and member of various international delegations
due to a particular strain of the Alzheimers disease which led to him living permanently in a hospital from the year 2000
Foreign celebrities queued up to visit him and everyone did everything they could to give him the best care possible
but of course no one foresook as much as his wife did to care for him
visiting him and sitting by his side as she did every day for years
thereby giving up on periodically flying to Spain to visit their grandchildren and great-grandchildren
Real Madrid also visited Budapest to participate in a gala match and show their respect and love for their club icon
the ‘National Sportsman’ who was the symbol of Hungarianness in the twentieth century
left us on 17th November 2006 to – as he himself put it – join up with the other national-team members up there
For the benefit of the legendary Imre Schlosser
he would even be prepared to move out to the left wing position
Puskás would wear the number 10 shirt there too and the captain’s armband because he is Hungary’s eternal captain… and the favourite of the world’s football lovers
Shopmark that used to be called Europark is a shopping centre in Kispest, Budapest that is temporarily closed due to reconstruction. The aim is to create a smaller ecological footprint by switching to green energy, as forbes.hu reports
Shopmark lies in Határ Street, Kispest
Budapest and it will be closed from the 23rd of April due to reconstruction
most of the renters move out in the first week
some of the renters got special permission for being open during the reconstruction
They are in Shopmark Point that is the only open part of the mall
The new plaza is going to open in the third quarter of 2018 with a new look
The company responsible for the reconstruction is called KÉSZ Építő Zrt
They started with the facade in February even before the shopping centre closed and continue their work until it gets its brand-new look
The entire building’s electric system will be updated
and renewable energy sources will be involved
Not only the mall itself but also its surroundings will have a different look
namely the Magyar Posta Takarék Ingatlan Befektetési Alap (Hungarian Post Savings Property Investment Fund)
Diófa Alapkezelő Zrt (Diófa Funder Ltd) handles this fund
It was the Mészáros’s Konzum Nyrt that bought its other half
that is worth 11.9 billiard forints (about 38 million euros)
We have already reported that the property prices are increasing
A huge sum of money flows to building shopping centres and offices as well
Gránit Pólus is planning on creating a city centre around WestEnd shopping mall with offices
It is worth investing in shopping malls because the 8.2 percent increase of the Hungarian retail sales was in the first three places of Europe in the last quarter of 2017
metro line M3 will be replaced by buses between Nagyvárad tér and Kőbánya-Kispest on 6-7 August 2016 (Saturday-Sunday)
Metro cars will be operating between Újpest-Központ and Nagyvárad tér
the replacement bus M3 to Nagyvárad tér M will run on the route section Kőbánya-Kispest M–Déli bejáró út–Vak Bottyán utca–Lehel utca–Üllői út–Könyves Kálmán körút–Albert Flórián út–Vágóhíd utca–Üllői út–Nagyvárad tér M and will serve the following stops:
the terminus boarding point of bus line 148 at Kőbánya-Kispest M will be relocated to the boarding point of bus line 193E
Modified departures of the last scheduled lines running between Nagyvárad tér and Kőbánya-Kispest connected to the last scheduled metro are the following:
Regular metro service will be available between Újpest-Központ and Nagyvárad tér
The required involuntary transfers during the replacement period are not considered to be trip interruptions
therefore when transferring between replacement buses and the metro
already validated single tickets (also of those from a block of 10 tickets) and transfer tickets are valid for onward travel
The other end of single tickets (the end without a number grid) needs to be stamped or punched with the validating machines
In the case of older-type single tickets from a stapled block
the individual tickets need to be torn out to do this
Older-type transfer tickets have number grids at both ends
therefore no revalidation is needed at the other end in the case of this ticket type
as the second grid has already been validated or will be punched/stamped in the course of a regular transfer
When using short section metro tickets for up to 3 stops
please consider the following when transferring between metro line M3 and the replacement bus:
section ticket validity must be calculated from the trip’s starting point
so the 3 stops need to be counted from the original stop (without replacement) where the passenger boarded
For journeys started on the replacement bus where the point of boarding cannot be determined
so the section ticket is valid for up to 2 stops calculated from the transfer point (the second validation on metro line M3) which is Corvin-negyed metro station
Nyugati Railway Station will temporarily close from June 22 to July 5 midnight
There will be maintenance and refurbishment works on tracks
the passenger platforms and station buildings which have become urgent

The Budapest-Nyugati-Zahony trains depart from Kobanya-Kispest and also arrive there
The timetables of Budapest-Nyugati-Vac-Szob and Budapest-Nyugati-Cegled-Szolnok trains will be merged: the zone trains will operate on the Szob-Vac-Rakospalota-Ujpest-Zuglo-Cegled line
the local trains will operate on Vac-Rakosrendezo-Zuglo-Monor line
There will be trains which go from the Dunkanyar until Rakospalota-Ujpest
The Budapest-Nyugati-Veresegyhaz-Vac trains’ temporarily terminus will be the Rakosplaota-Ujpest station
The Kobanya-Kispest-Szekesfehervar G43 trains only operate between Kelenfold and Gardony
The S36 trains will be operating between Kobanya-Kispest and Tarnok
buses will transport the passengers between Kobanya-Kispest and Ocsa from June 22 until August 19
Metroline M3 is in service only on the Northern part

Please note that metroline M3 is in service only between the section of Újpest-központ and Göncz Árpád városközpont every day from 18 June (Saturday) until the middle of August
while between Göncz Árpád városközpont and Kőbánya-Kispest the replacement bus M3 is in service
There is even a replacement bus M3A running on weekdays between Göncz Árpád városközpont and Határ út
air-conditioned replacement buses in service
their scheduled headways during peak hours are less than one minute
Please note that as the replacement buses running on an extended route to South Pest serve also Nagyvárad tér
the station replacement bus M30 is out of service during the above-written period
the city centre from the surrounding area of Nagyvárad tér is available directly by the replacement bus running between Göncz Árpád városközpont and Kőbánya-Kispest
BKK would like to kindly recommend that also during this phase of the reconstruction works passengers take tramlines 1 and 1M in operation between Göncz Árpád városközpont and Népliget
Please note that both in the Northern and Southern city parts
the operation of alternative lines remains unchanged
also the passage to be found at Deák Ferenc tér of metroline M1 is reconstructed
thus that station of metroline M1 is accessible from the direction of Erzsébet tér
To provide smooth operation for replacement buses
in addition to the already-designated bus lanes – the former bus lanes are designated again on Üllői út between Nagyvárad tér and Határ út
thus motorists have to prepare for a changed transport service
For the period of the metro replacement extended to the Southern part
Vak Bottyán utca to be found in the Kispest district is closed to car traffic between Határ út and Lehel utca
where only replacement buses are authorised to enter
except for destination traffic with a permit
whose reconstruction has recently become required and urgent
However each reconstruction brings about some inconvenience
this reconstruction results in a positive impact on the transport of the whole territory of Budapest
After the reconstructions realised by the investment of Budapest Transport Privately Held Corporation (BKV)
Budapest’s passengers will be able to travel on a renovated
to help disabled persons get around in the city
therefore tactile walking surface indicators make the trips of visually-impaired persons easier and each and every station becomes accessible for physically-impaired persons

articulated replacement buses replacing metroline M3 depart quite frequently
with scheduled headways of less than one minute
The vehicles are accessible and are equipped with air-conditioning
BKK would like to kindly ask customers and motorists alike to be patient and understanding in relation to the
reconstruction works in progress until the spring of 2023
you can find out which are the most popular regions for burglars in Budapest
as well as their most frequently used methods
what property owners can do to avoid significant financial losses
the 14th district of Budapest is at the top of the burglary list
followed by the 3rd district and the 9th district
the highest number of such crimes occurred in Zugló
followed by Óbuda with 101 cases and the third-ranked Ferencváros with 99 burglaries
the highest number of such crimes were experienced in Zugló
followed by Óbuda with 101 cases and the third ranked Ferencváros with 99 burglaries
burglars also targeted a high number of properties in the 18th (Pestszentlőrinc-Pestszentimre) and 19th (Kispest) districts
the continuously developing Újbuda (11th district) also experienced a significant number of cases
The latter is also a prominent target for criminals who do not break into private homes
The list also depicts that the safest zone of Budapest is the Buda Castle district
where only 12 burglaries were registered in the examined year
This is followed by the 23rd district (Soroksár)
district (Csepel) with less than 40 cases registered in 2020
As the Hungarian news portal Pénzcentrum reports
the number of burglaries in Budapest has decreased significantly compared to the previous years
1,846 burglaries and 1,274 home burglaries were recorded in the Hungarian capital
which is significantly less than in the previous years
One of the reasons for the drop is the pandemic
the number of cases has been decreasing since 2013
According to a survey that was carried out by questioning Hungarian burglars
the main targets of criminals in the Hungarian capital are detached houses
The most common methods to enter homes are damaging windows and doors by breaking

alarms or cameras is of primary importance
it is also crucial to let the outside world know about it as a deterrent
it is also necessary to get connected to the police
The 23 and 15-year-old perpetrators were soon arrested
They were interrogated and detained for a well-founded suspicion of attempted robbery and theft
and the court has since ordered their arrest
if you take out ‘the main targets of criminals in the Hungarian capital are detached houses
flats in panel houses and terraced houses’ what is left
That is just about the only thing missing from the list….

the 200E will operate more frequently in Budapest during the morning rush hour between Kőbánya-Kispest and Liszt Ferenc International Airport (Budapest Airport) on weekdays
the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) announced on Friday
The decision was justified by the fact that in the summer peak season
the airport is expected to see higher passenger traffic than ever before
For those travelling to the airport from the city centre, BKK offers the fast 100E airport shuttle, which will run at its busiest during this period
many passengers choose the 200E from Kőbánya-Kispest
as it offers a cheaper way to the airport for those arriving from South Pest or by train
The number of airport employees and the number of people working in the logistics park in the area has also increased significantly, so this spring, BKK conducted a passenger count, Pénzcentrum writes
the transport company has already expanded the number of early Saturday morning departures for the 200E service
