10 April 2024: The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) and the National Association of Disadvantaged Families are taking legal action against the Saint Damien Greek Catholic Hospital in Kisvárda for their denial of abortion services to women
The organisations have filed a complaint before the Deputy Commissioner for Fundamental Rights
Ombudsman for the Rights of National Minorities in Hungary
“Romani women are often discriminated against when accessing their sexual and reproductive health rights throughout Europe
Romani women are among the poorest in all of Hungary
There are several rights violations in this story: the Hungarian Metropolitan Church’s illegal decision to deny abortion services means that these women are practically denied access to this right because of their inadequate access to transport to another hospital
It is also very stressful for them to be discharged from hospital on the same day of the procedure
It's not hard to imagine that after such procedure
having to make the journey with several transfers is physically and emotionally demanding and painful
That’s why we are bringing a legal complaint
but on behalf of all women in the region who should not have to face difficulties accessing an abortion” said the ERRC’s Legal Director
state-run Kisvárda Felső-Szabolcs Hospital was taken over by the Hungarian Metropolitan Church under the name of Saint Damján Greek Catholic Hospital
The hospital previously provided pregnancy termination
many Romani women have complained about having to travel almost 50 kilometres away to Nyíregyháza for an abortion
which takes about two hours by public transport and adds additional hardship for women who live in a region marked by the deepest poverty in Hungary according to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office
This change significantly affects the roughly 80,000 residents
in and around Kisvárda in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County
The ERRC and the National Association of Disadvantaged Families’ complaint argues that the hospital’s decision to refuse abortions violates all women's reproductive self-determination and the requirement of equal treatment
allows women to decide about their bodies and destinies
The decision to stop offering abortion services at the Saint Damien Greek Catholic Hospital
directly discriminates against women living in poverty
and further indirectly discriminates against Romani woman with lower socioeconomic status who are disproportionately affected by the regulation
We have called on the Deputy Commissioner for Fundamental Rights
Ombudsman for the Rights of National Minorities in Hungary to investigate this matter
given its severity and the implications for Romani women’s reproductive rights
The ERRC and the National Association of Disadvantaged Families are committed to ensuring that all women
regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic status

Nigerian youngster Popoola Ridwan enjoyed a dream debut for Kisvárda FC
helping his side to a 1-0 away victory over Csákvári in the Hungarian second division on Sunday
played the full 90 minutes and delivered a commanding performance in the heart of midfield

Speaking to Merit News after the match, Ridwan shared his excitement about the win.
“I’m really happy we got the win today. This was my first game for the club, and starting off with a victory means a lot to me. I want to see my team win every game and lift the trophy at the end of the season,” he said.
With Kisvárda currently topping the table with 48 points and seven matches left, Ridwan emphasized his commitment to helping the team secure promotion to Hungary’s top flight.
“We have seven games to go, and we’re leading the table. My focus is on giving my best to help the team earn promotion. I’ll keep working hard,” he added.

Kisvarda, a town of 15,000 inhabitants in northeastern Hungary is quiet
is the surprise success of Hungary's first division
With more than two thirds of the season's games in the books
Kisvarda finds itself in third place in the standings
But the club is also sensitive to world events
with the Ukrainian border just a 20-minute drive away from the town
Almost a third of his first-team players are from there and Ukrainians make up almost half of the players on his youth teams
Revesz also helps run a partner football academy in Ukraine
When the war started, Revesz knew that many players in Ukraine would no longer get paid
so he started a donation drive of both non-perishable goods and especially cash donations to support them
about €10,000 ($11,000) has been raised to help the families of more than 70 footballers. The money is collected and then dispersed by a third party after a committee has reviewed the needs of the families the club is supporting
Revesz is realistic about what that money can — and cannot — do
"This money is just temporary help, it won't solve the real problems in their lives," Revesz told DW
"It'll just make things a little bit better and easier
The real help is when we get monetary donations that can be passed on to them
The money that we collect is minor financial aid that they can really use
In certain cases they may use it to make their way here (to Hungary)."
Revesz was in the western border region of Ukraine called Zakarpattia on February 24
when Russian troops launched their invasion
He quickly came up with the donation-drive idea after talking to Ukrainian football officials
he tasked the Hungarian Professional Players Association to pitch in, which it did
The organization wrote a letter to all professional clubs asking them to do their part
either by helping support the families of Ukrainian players in their squads or by sending off shipments of goods
Star forward Anton Kravchenko is so upset that he can't play
His parents are in a region just west of Donetsk
They have told him that they aren't moving and are ready to die there
Revesz respects Kravchenko's situation.
"Kravchenko's parents live in the region of Dnipropetrovsk," Revesz explained
"At the beginning there was no fighting there
We just haven't been able to include him in the team recently, he's been deeply affected by what's happening."
Goalkeeper Artem Odyntsov is among Kisvarda's Ukrainian players. Both of his parents and his younger sister are trapped in Donetsk.
"I don't know how to put it into words," Odyntsov told DW
"It's very difficult – when you talk with them and day and night they just say
‘We're being careful.' Well that's … very difficult."
He also wants to remain strong despite what is happening and focus on his sport
"The first few days were very difficult," Odyntsov said, "but now I understand that this is my job
I only have this and I have to give my full concentration for the two hours here during a game
After a game or practice I can think about other things."
The Kisvarda team is also continuously bringing in junior players and their families from Ukraine. So far
hundreds of Ukrainian youth players have arrived in the city
Some stay while others move on to teams in Budapest
so funding the aid effort is making a significant impact on its budget
"We've taken the decision to finance this effort from our own budget
and we'll worry about how to try to compensate for the losses at a later date," he said
"This is our highest priority right now because it's important to give needy people a new opportunity
"There are already a whole lot of people in this city whose homes have been bombed
they will have to start a new life
This will be the start of a new era for them."

Thunderstorm reached Kisvárda in Northeast Hungary yesterday afternoon
and the environment turned wintery for a short while
Here are some photos and videos about how “winter” arrived in Hungary during the hottest summer period
According to 24.hu
Kisvárda was covered in centimetres-deep ice yesterday afternoon
The Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) warned about the thunderstorm and the strong winds reaching 60-85 km/h
but did not talk about such huge frost balls like in these videos:
And here are some more photos from Kisvárda:
similar thunderstorms are expected in the Transdanubia
The storm will move to the Eastern regions later today
creating ~20-40 mm precipitation in no time
they will be accompanied by strong winds (>80 km/h) and hail (~1-3 cm)
The rainstorm over Budapest and Pest County on Friday caused a lot of damage, origo.hu wrote
and the strong winds damaged electric wires
The districts suffering the most from the extreme weather were the 3rd
Similar damages were reported in Erdőkertes
Concerning next week’s weather, idokep.hu writes that we should expect comfortable summer weather with no extreme heat or precipitation

The website came across the document on the page of the Public Procurement Authority. Even though it’s only the proof of a future investment
it is quite probable that the municipality will go for a huge entertainment park
The task will be the construction of a slide park
made up of 14 slide units that reach a length of 1070 metres
The winning company will have nine months to execute the plans
the most important aspects will be the net price offer and the undertaken deadline
Applicants have to be able to attest an income of 350 million forints (~EUR 1m) from previous slide constructions
applicants need to have a reference of at least one project that included 10 elements
a total length of 700 metres and the minimum of 7 types of slides
The offer call doesn’t include an estimated price; however
it recently turned out that another slide park would be built in Mezőkövesd
but it received a state fund of 600 million forints (~EUR 1.9m)
the Kisvárda project of 14 slides will cost around 1.5 billion forints (~EUR 4.9m)
Hungary’s biggest slide park is found in Mogyoród
which is followed by the Hajdúszoboszló Aquapark’s 15 slides
The new complex of Kisvárda would be a bronze medallist along with the slide park of Sárvár
the region is not ill provided with aquaparks
Sárospatak (45 km) and Hajdúszoboszló (11 km)
