With Matthew Stafford still dealing with fractured bones in his back, Jeff Driskel will start his second game at quarterback for the Detroit Lions on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at Ford Field
The Lions have only had three starting quarterbacks named Jeff: Driskel
Here’s a look at how the three Jeffs stack up:
Road to the Lions: The Lions selected him in the ninth round of the 1979 NFL draft out of Delaware
which he led to the 1978 NCAA Division II title game
but if we count John Matthew Stafford as a Matt
Time in Detroit: Because of injuries to starter Gary Danielson in the preseason and backup Joe Reed in the regular-season opener
coach Monte Clark started Komlo in the second game of the 1979 season
The Lions went 2-14 that season with Komlo
who completed 49.7% of his passes and threw for 11 touchdowns with 23 interceptions
Danielson returned for the 1980 season and Komlo played in just seven more games over that season and the 1981 season
completed 49.9% of his passes for 2,554 yards with 12 touchdowns
Road to the Lions: The Lions signed Garcia
a three-time Pro Bowler in San Francisco and a former player for coach Steve Mariucci with the 49ers
in March to a one-year deal as a backup to struggling Joey Harrington
Time in Detroit: The Lions had the NFL’s third-worst offense when Garcia replaced Harrington and started Oct
23 in a 13-10 win over the Cleveland Browns
Garcia suffered a setback to his fractured fibula after two games and didn’t return to action until Thanksgiving
when he replaced Harrington in the second quarter of a 27-7 blowout loss that led to Steve Mariucci’s firing a few days later
Garcia started the next three games — all losses
The Lions didn’t offer him a contract after the season
he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and made the Pro Bowl after posting an 8-5 record in 13 starts and leading them to the playoffs
Garcia finished his Lions career with a 1-4 record
Road to the Lions: Driskel played five seasons of college football: four at Florida and one at Louisiana Tech after being granted his release
The San Francisco 49ers selected Driskel in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft
He was claimed off waivers in September of that year by the Cincinnati Bengals
he went 1-4 in five starts for the Bengals and completed 59.7% of his passes for 1,003 yards with six touchdowns
two interceptions and an 82.2 passer rating
Time in Detroit: Driskel lost a camp battle to Bengals fourth-round draft pick Ryan Finley and undrafted free agent Jake Dolegala. The Lions signed Driskel on Sept. 17 to a one-year contract
When Stafford missed his first game after 136 consecutive starts because of a back injury
He completed 27 of 46 passes (58.7%) for 269 yards with one touchdown
one interception and a 73.6 passer rating in a 20-13 loss to the Bears

The ultimate goal of Orientation is “for freshmen to realize they have a home here,” said Brian Fausto ’14CPS, ’16G, Assistant Director of Student Development
“They’re just out of high school,” he said
but in just two days you see how comfortable they become.”
Orientation Leaders play a vital role in the process

When I see the OLs going out of their way—helping the quieter kids engage with the group
serving as an OL at the Queens campus is a way of giving back
I want these kids to learn from my own experiences.”

HUNGARY: National passenger operator MÁV-Start has suspended rail services on 10 regional routes with effect from August 1
replacing the trains by buses ‘until further notice’
MÁV Group — which now incorporates national bus company Volánbusz — explained that the train services were being suspended because MÁV-Start was suffering from rolling stock and staff shortages
It believed that passengers would benefit from ‘more convenient
insisting that journey times would be broadly similar
Nine of the branch lines affected were operated by aging Bzmot diesel railcars
which were manufactured at the Tatra Studénka plant in Czechoslovakia between 1977 and 1986
Passenger services have also been suspended on the electrified Nyékládháza – Tiszaújváros line
although this route remains open to carry a significant volume of freight
The 10 lines affected were among 36 regional and branch lines where MÁV-Start reduced the level of service to one or two trains each way per day from July 6 2020
citing reduced ridership as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic
Service levels on some routes were restored later that year
but others continued to have a reduced service including five of the 10 affected routes
representatives from 12 transport associations and local NGOs wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán calling for the reversal of the decision by the Ministry of Construction & Transport to approve the suspension of rail services
HUNGARY: Thales has completed equipping the 110 km Sopron – Szombathely – Szentgotthárd line with ETCS Level 2

Then there was Northern Iowa in the pleasant
Delaware’s two NCAA Football Tournament duels with the Panthers
both of which were framed by wintry weather events
certainly stand out among the highlights of the Blue Hens most memorable quarterfinal tussles
one was against the school Delaware visits Saturday in this spring’s FCS Tournament
Delaware (6-0) and Jacksonville State (10-2) kick off at 3 p.m
Here is a countdown of Delaware’s eight most memorable NCAA football quarterfinal games:
Lehigh 22: Delaware and Lehigh had enjoyed a passionate rivalry for decades
but this was the first time the two met in the postseason
Fresh in the Blue Hens’ minds was a 42-35 loss to Lehigh the year before at Delaware Stadium in which Delaware couldn’t contain Lehigh’s passing attack
“It wasn’t going to happen again to our defense,” UD defensive end Mike Cecere said after the Hens took advantage of three first-half fumbles and a second-half interception while limiting Lehigh to 323 total yards
Lehigh actually jumped to 7-0 and 10-7 first-quarter leads
The Blue Hens responded with 40 straight points as Matt Nagy passed for 266 yards and Jamin Elliott had 162 receiving yards with a 70-yard TD catch
Jacksonville State 27: The Blue Hens seemed in peril in their Division II playoff opener at Delaware Stadium
The visitors from Alabama had erased an early 13-point deficit and led 16-13 at halftime and 19-13 early in the third quarter
Jeff Komlo’s 6-yard run on a quarterback keeper had just pushed Delaware ahead 33-27 early in the fourth period when an unlikely hero stepped up for Delaware
who 23 years later would become Delaware coach
intercepted three straight Jacksonville State passes
enabling the Blue Hens to pull away on another Komlo TD run and Brandy Kennedy’s field goal
GOTTA RUN: Hens’ ground game has to be better at JSU
Delaware 31: Delaware had been ousted by Marshall in the 1992 semifinals on the Thundering Herd’s home field and now returned for a quarterfinal bout against the defending national champs
With Delaware down 31-14 in the fourth quarter
coach Tubby Raymond summoned Dale Fry to replace Leo Hamlett at quarterback
Fry had been the starter earlier in the year before breaking his collarbone
had come off the bench to engineer’s Delaware’s stunning 49-48 win at Montana the week before
Fry threw touchdown passes of 20 yards to Dan Cooper and 11 yards to Keita Malloy
But David Merrick kicked a 34-yard field goal with three seconds left to give Marshall the win
Delaware 38 (2OT): Among notable quarterfinal games
this is the one Delaware followers would prefer to forget
The Blue Hens were good enough to repeat as NCAA champs after winning the 2003 title
Delaware was up 31-10 at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg
Omar Cuff had rushed for 148 yards and the Hens were driving for a potential clinching touchdown
Then quarterback Sonny Riccio threw in the right flat on the first play of the fourth quarter
Cornerback Stephen Cason picked off the pass and zipped 62 yards untouched for the touchdown
“We need to put people away,” coach K.C
“and we didn’t put them away.”
Georgia Southern 7: Georgia Southern had won four NCAA titles from 1985-90 and was beginning its return to prominence under coach Paul Johnson
Defense ruled the day as Delaware limited the Panthers’ triple-option attack to 269 yards
almost 150 yards below its per-game average
Ralph D’Angelo’s 19 tackles included a fourth-and-1 stop at the UD 2
Delaware got three field goals from Sean Leach
one set up by Jamie Belle’s interception
before Craig Cummings’ 11-yard TD run locked up the win with 4:40 left
Northern Iowa 7: Many Delaware fans simply remember this as “The Snow Game,” and for good reason
then another mini-blizzard hit Saturday morning
The noon kickoff was only delayed by 30 minutes as groundskeepers and almost any volunteer who could operate a shovel went about clearing the field
The Blue Hens then immediately began the process of making Northern Iowa wish it was someplace warm and dry
Delaware jumped to a 17-0 first-quarter lead
Crescione’s blocked punt and Rashad Woodard’s recovery of a fumbled kickoff return caused by Kyle Campbell
Delaware limited the visitors to 164 total yards and forced nine punts while Germaine Bennett piled up 140 yards on 25 carries for the Blue Hens
SACRED HEART TAKEAWAYS: Move to Spruill was key
Northeast Louisiana 18: The Indians had won nine straight
were the tournament’s top seed and were playing the Blue Hens at their Malone Stadium home in Monroe
The Blue Hens were not very deferential guests
They outgained the hosts 462-353 and feasted on seven Northeast Louisiana turnovers
including safety Brian Quigg’s 37-yard first-half interception runback for a touchdown
Northeast Louisiana had averaged 48 points its previous eight games and scored 78 the previous week
They jumped ahead 7-0 before the Hens took over
and Billy Vergantino threw for 86 and ran for 51
Northern Iowa had the Blue Hens just where they wanted them
this game may not have been played if not for the indoor facility
The Panthers were unstoppable at the outset
jumping ahead 10-0 while Delaware had trouble in the noisy din
But then the Blue Hens became comfortable and found their stride
The defense buckled down and came up big with Erik Johnson’s 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown and Matt Marcorelle’s strip and fumble recovery that set up Jon Striefsky’s 46-yard field goal
Delaware secured the win on Joe Flacco’s 1-yard keeper for a touchdown with :41 left
55-yard drive featured an 11-yard pass to Cuff on third-and-11 and Flacco’s 33-yard pass to Kervin Michaud
“It was one of the hardest games I’ve ever been in
and one of the best,” UD wide receiver Mark Duncan said
