Hungarian Minister for Construction and Transport János Lázár revealed plans to construct a four-lane motorway stretching 40 kilometres to connect Szombathely with Körmend and Kőszeg by the decade’s end. During a joint press conference with Szombathely mayor András Nemény, Lázár outlined the details of this transformative infrastructure project, emphasizing the government’s commitment to regional development.
Lázár confirmed that the project’s construction plans, which carry a price tag of 5 billion forints, will be finalized by December this year. The necessary environmental permits are already in place, and the government has allocated 500 million forints this year and 1.5 billion forints next year for acquiring land needed for construction.
While acknowledging the significant challenge of securing the 200 billion forints required for the project, Lázár expressed confidence in the government’s ability to find solutions, stating: ‘We have ideas, and the government remains committed to moving forward.’
The government is open to a cooperative model for additional projects, such as the western bypass of Szombathely. This bypass, Lázár noted, would form part of the initial segment of the M87 motorway leading to Kőszeg.
Lázár highlighted the potential for industrial growth alongside the infrastructure upgrades. Szombathely boasts a 290–300 hectare industrial park near the proposed M87 motorway route—a rare asset in Hungary. The government aims to foster stronger ties between this industrial park and the Győr–Sopron–Ebenfurti Railways company (GYSEV), envisioning a logistics hub to complement existing successful collaborations in the region.
The minister also announced a significant expansion of GYSEV’s railway services in Vas, Győr–Moson–Sopron, and Veszprém counties. GYSEV will take over from MÁV in managing regional rail transport, promising high-quality service improvements.
Reflecting on past achievements, Lázár praised the government’s efforts in connecting Szombathely to the M1 motorway, a project that cost 192 billion forints. He attributed its success to the persistent lobbying of local Fidesz representatives, including MP Csaba Hende.
Mayor András Nemény emphasized the importance of maintaining cooperation with the government to ensure the realization of development plans despite economic challenges. ‘We want a city where jobs are secure, where residents can plan their futures, and where it’s worth living and raising families,’ Nemény said. He also stressed the need for Szombathely to become greener, more sustainable, and safer.

a resident of the Hungarian town of Kormend
reflects on the government's recent decision to open a camp for migrants nearby: “Ten thousands people live here and we don’t want 300 to determine our everyday life.”
Laszlo's daughter claims her father has become stricter with her since the facility was opened
He doesn't let her walk alone after sunset any more
I'm just concerned about the situation out there.”
The government built a temporary camp there that received its first residents in early May
Fear of the migrants didn't take long to rise
residents rushed to buy pepper spray to protect themselves against the newcomers until supplies in Kormend and neighbouring towns sold out
The local Tesco supermarket urged its female employees not to wear revealing clothes to avoid unwanted attention from the migrants
A local branch of the Hungarian far-right party Jobbik organised a demonstration against the camp just four days after its opening on 2 May
Some 500 Jobbik sympathisers chanted “close the camp” during a march in the town
Jobbik deputy leader Daniel Z Karpat addressed the demonstrators as “indigenous Hungarian brothers” and warned the Fidesz government that it would be held responsible for any crimes committed by migrants in Kormend
He then stressed that Jobbik’s followers were nevertheless well capable of defending themselves and their homeland
decided to leave for Austria the day he set foot in the Kormend railway station
“People here are scared of us and I don’t know why
In October, the Hungarian government will hold a referendum on the EU refugee quotas
where the question will be: \"Do you want the European Union to be entitled to prescribe the mandatory settlement of non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary without the consent of parliament?\"
“European leaders go against the will of their people,” said Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban in June
“The opposition is growing in numbers and intensity
sooner or later this will lead to trouble.”
According to a recent poll published by the Szazadveg Migration Research Institute
73 percent of Hungarians would oppose a new refugee camp in their hometown
Other results from poll suggest that 63 percent of Hungarians think people recently arrived in Europe are not real refugees but “economic migrants”
and 78 percent think there is a link between the current migration wave and the terror attacks in Europe
a chief researcher at the Hungarian social research institute (TARKI) says that racism and xenophobia in Hungary has reached its highest level since 1990
In a TARKI survey published in January
only 1 percent of respondents said they had a positive attitude towards migrants and 53% showed clear xenophobic attitudes
In 2015 it was 6 percent and 41 percent respectively
xenophobia was high in April 2015 when the government waged an anti-migrant campaign
including nationwide consultations and billboards
sought to stop the progressive decline in its popularity it faced at the beginning of 2015
when tens of thousands of refugees arrived in Hungary and the media reported on children and disabled people living in precarious conditions
the level of xenophobia decreased,\" the researcher said
the local media lost interest in this topic and there was nothing to counter the government’s anti-refugee campaign
Within the 1 percent with positive attitude towards migrants is Veronika Kozma
a volunteer for Welcome to Hungary (W2HU) group
she now gives refugees free Hungarian lessons
“We have beginners and advanced groups and our students come from all over the world - from Georgia to Ivory Coast,” Kozma says
The classes are held on Sunday afternoons in a basement near Budapest city centre
students acknowledge how difficult the Hungarian language is
While volunteers and NGOs are eager to help refugees to integrate
the Hungarian government thinks differently
it stopped all funding for migrant integration programmes and refugees have seen their monthly allowance cut by almost 50%
This article is the first in a series exploring the central European reaction to the migrant crisis

First of all, thank you for accepting my request for this interview.
Why and when did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball because of my older brother. He got into it first and as a younger brother always wanting to be like my older brother, I started playing as well and fell in love with the game. I was 11 years old.
Who is your role model on and off the court?
I don't have one role model but I would have to say mostly my family. Just because of the hardship they have endured and been able to persevere. On the court i grew up watching Michael Jordan, but i also really liked Glen Rice and Reggie Miller.
You played in NCAA 2 seasons with Binghamton. Do you like to remember for those years?
Binghamton was great, it allowed me to develop my basketball skills physically and mentally. It was very challenging and competitive. If you wanted to play you had to earn playing time in practice. I also made life long friends.
What kind of experiences do you have from the NCAA?
One of my most memorable experiences was after winning the 1998 Championship with my first college team, Uconn, we went to the white house and got to meet Bill Clinton. Talking to the US president was a very memorable experiences in my life, not just from the NCAA.
Which are the most imoprtant skills for a good power forward, and center?
I think the game has changed so much that today as a power forward/center you really have to be able to do everything. Shoot, rebound, pass. For me the two most skills would be playing good defense and rebounding.
How did you decide to come to Europe? What was the best and the worst thing in your first european season?
After college an agent contacted me and offered me a contract to play in the Netherlands. I took it and in terms of playing it was probably my worst year. I was really inexperienced and we had a really tough coach. The best thing was probably my teammates. Some really great and funny guys that I still talk to today.
You spent 1 year at Dombovár? Averaged 14,4 points, 6,5 rebounds. How did you felt yourself?
I really liked Dombovar, the city is small and they have alot of basketball talent. And of course I was introduced to hungarian food in Dombovar. I'm a big fan of hungarian food!!
In 2007 you have signed a one year deal with Körmend. What was your first impression about the city, team, team-mates, coaches and of the fans.
My first impression about the city was that it was really small, my teammates were really cool guys. But I think I liked the Kormend fans the best. They just showed so much passion for the game. They gave us a lot of energy on the court.
You become a favourite of fans very quickly, because you was friendly, made huge blocks and dunks. Was it easy to find a common voice with fans?
I think the fans appreciate you if you just play hard. No matter what. If you are losing or winning, just always play hard on both ends of the court and thats what i tried to do.
What did your team-mates say about big rivalry? How did you experience your first Körmend vs. FALCO match ?
WOW, Falco - Kormend is probably the biggest rivalry I have seen in my professional career. My teammates told me that it would be very intense and that we would have to try and win. I was really surprised by the atmosphere of play though and once again the fans were amazing. You could just tell there was so much history between both teams.
You and your team-mate made a massive 9-0 run from January until end of March. How could you do this good series?
Well the coach just got everyone playing together. So we werent playing selfish basketball. Our main goal was to win the games. So everybody just played as hard as they good and didnt worry about stats. We had great team chemistry.
After you caught the PO you won 3-1 over regular season’s 2nd Dombóvár. Was it an easy win?
Definetly not. But I think we were just so focused against Dombovar. As a team we really enjoyted playing against other teams that were supposed to be better than us. So we just came out focused and tried to show everyone in the league that we could play with the top teams!!
In Semi-final Körmend made a 5 games series with Szolnok and you could win there on 5th game. How do you remember for last game and celebration?
I remember the last game cause it came down to the last shot. Luckily the Szolnok player missed it, but it was a very intense and fun series. After the game I remember trying to leave the stadium and our fans were in the parking lot and they would not let us leave. They were so happy and just wanted to celebrate with the team.
The rivalry continued with Falco in Championship Final, and You scored 10 points, recorded 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals on 2nd game at home. You and JT gave a big hope for Körmend fans. Was it difficult series againts Falco?
Yes it really was a big game. And it was difficult. Falco had great players at each positioon and they were just playing great basketball at the time.
You won silver medal, but fans celebrated the team than the champions. Was it a heavy night for You?
I remember going back to Kormend and having a huge team party with all the fans.
Why couldn’t the Körmend win the Hungarian Championship in 2008.? What do you think about that team?
I think that we could have won the championship if we had home court advantage. I think if we had stayed one more year together as a team we would have definetly been one of the favorites to win the championship.
In 2007/08 You averaged, 14,2 points (46%), 7,5 rebounds, 1,8 steals, 1,5 assist, 0,6 blocks. Nice numbers, very good performance from you. What do you feel, when you remember for this year?
I don’t really care too much about the numbers but more about winning. I remember winning certain games and the celebrations after.
In 2008/09 you played 5 games at FALCO. Why couldn’t make them a longer contract with you?
I was on a try out period with the team and after a month they wanted to extend my contract but I was lucky enough to get a great offer for a team in Japan. It was an opportunity I could not let pass so I decided to leave Falco and they were really good in letting me go.
After Falco, I went to Japan where I played for the Hammamatsu Phoenix team and we won the regular season championship. The following year I played for a team in the SBL in the US, the Manchester Millrats!!
How do you plan your career in the future? Would you like to play in stronger competition?
I don’t know what the future holds for me but I would like to play a couple more years and get to see more of the world. I think after basketball I would like to work with kids and help them develop their skills.
Do you have some unique rituals before matches, or trainings?
Before games I just try and take a couple of minutes to just relax and think about the game. What I want to accomplish in that particular game. Kind of a visualization process where I see myself doing what I want to on the court. On game days I try and rest through out the day and take a nap a couple of hours before the game and eat properly and drink a lot of water.
Thanks a lot Stan. I wish all of good for you and your family!
Count Dr László Batthány was born into the historical Batthány family as the fourteenth child of József Batthyány and Ludovika Batthyány on 28 October 1870. His affinity for the sciences was obvious from a young age. Completing his university studies in Vienna, he first studied economics, then enrolled in the Faculty of Humanities and studied chemistry. He received his doctorate in 1896. He went on to study medicine and graduated in 1900 as a medical doctor.

He was still at University when he first considered founding a hospital for the poor on his estate in Köpcsény. He realised this goal in 1902 when a 30-bed private hospital opened in the palace.
As a doctor, he was mainly drawn towards ophthalmology. He became a specialist after passing an exam in Vienna. He practised surgery and internal medicine as well. During the world war, he substituted the general practitioner in Köpcsény, without being paid.
He completed over 20 000 surgeries during his career, 3000 of these were successful cataract removals (Photo: batthyany.at)
He donated a significant part of his wealth to charities and foundations for the development of Hungarian healthcare. He also continuously developed his own knowledge, collecting a major library of scientific works he also participated in conferences and scientific decision making. He maintained contact with several international colleagues and was elected a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
He primarily considered himself a doctor. He used his aristocratic origins and wealth to serve his profession. He considered healing the most important task and rejected a professorship to continue practising.
The main supporter of his work was his wife, Countess Maria Theresa von Coreth. The couple married in 1898 and had 13 children. The countess assisted in many surgeries.

The devoted doctor passed away on 22 January 1931 after a long illness he bore with dignity. Thousands visited his body lying in repose in Körmend Chapel. He was lain to rest in the family crypt at Güssing.

May this sentence from his will guide us all: "If you want to be happy, make others happy." Alongside caring for the ill, this was his main goal in life. Due to his humble commitment to work, and his deep piety the "doctor of the poor" was revered almost as a saint during his lifetime.
His beatification was initiated by both Archdiocese of Vienna and the Bishopric of Szombathely in 1944, but the storms of history swept the attempt away. He was eventually beatified in 198, due to a miraculous healing.
The motto of the Batthyány family – "With loyalty and love" – guided him throughout his life.
Today his memory is honoured in two locations around Budapest. He is depicted on a relief, erected in 2012, in the assembly hall of the 37-47 Tűzoltó Street campus of Semmelweis Medical University. The original of the work has been on display in the Hungarian Chapel of the Vatican since 2004.
He can also be seen in the 11th District. The Saint Gerard Parish Church stands at 149 Bartók Béla Road, and catholic saints line the spaces between the urn chambers in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart.

I was just backpacking around Eastern Europe and Latvia ended up being a longer stop than I planned. I wanted a chill, fun night but didn’t know how to find someone legit. I browsed https://djoyk.com/escort/latvia and it was way better than I expected
Some escorts offered travel packages and longer bookings with nice rates
It worked well because I could plan without needing a local contact or agency

good weather and sunny days lure people out to open air
Some of them choose to spend their free time traveling abroad
but it should not be forgotten that our little country also has its beautiful sights
It’s worth considering to visit county Vas
All of its smaller and larger towns have their own natural
one of the oldest towns founded in Hungary
The city was established in the Roman times by emperor Claudius in 43 AD
Its establishment is due to its location besides the Amber Road
which was an ancient trade route from North Europe to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea
Visitors can still walk on the remaining parts of this ancient road
or more above them – the original residues are covered with plexiglass in the main hall of OTP Bank
A renovated road section can be seen in the Sanctuary of Isis (Iseum)
the ruins of which was discovered during excavations in the 1950’s
and which also have been recently renovated
Today it’s functioning as an archaeological workshop and warehouse
presenting temporary and permanent exhibitions
and its enthralling synagogue are also worth a visit
as well as its famous historical carnival held in every August
Batthyányi-Strattmann castle in Körmend (Photo: MTI)
County Vas is also famous for its fortresses and castles
The classicist style Batthyányi-Strattmann castle in Körmend
together with the castle park is a nice place to visit
as well as the medieval Nádasdy fortress in Sárvár
surrounded by the former moat where now lies a great park
Maybe the most beautiful medieval castle is located in Kőszeg
which has a charming old town with traditional restaurants
Kőszeg lies in the foothills of the Kőszeg mountain
If someone would rather spend their free time in the nature
they don’t even have to leave the surroundings of Kőszeg
one of the region’s favorite tourist spot
deep in the forest near the Austrian boarder
The springs got their names from the Seven Hungarian Chiefs
Their crystal-clear cold water tastes very good after taking the 5 kilometers walk from the nearest parking lot
Another “must-be-seen” spot is Írottkő
the highest peak of Transdanubia with its 883 meters height
