the lightweight ‘Alma’ collection combines CNC-shaped steel frames with an elastic mesh support
traditional moulds are replaced by generatively designed components
enabling flexible assembly and endless variation
the ‘Alma’ armchair pairs structural clarity with subtle tactility
Optional cushions add softness and colour customisation
Argentine designer Francisco Gomez Paz and Italian brand Paola Lenti unveil ‘Alma’ – a lightweight
technically advanced outdoor seating system
'When you have an unconventional design idea
you need to work with a company that has courage,' says Argentine designer Francisco Gomez Paz
his concept – a new family of outdoor seating designed using generative algorithms and numerical control technology – found a courageous collaborator in progressive Italian brand Paola Lenti
the series harnesses generative algorithms and CNC technology to shape elegant stainless-steel frames
finished with an elastic mesh that offers support and comfort without the need for padding
costly mould would define the form of a seat; here
technology replaces that limitation with a flexible system of components
Each element is precisely generated and can be combined in multiple ways
allowing for exceptional variety and virtually limitless customisation
‘Francisco’s vision seamlessly integrates innovation
and environmental responsibility – values that have always guided our brand,’ she explains
‘Alma’ is a study in subtraction
‘Alma consists of a structure with an attached elastic net that alone provides the right support and seating comfort,’ Lenti says
The CNC-formed frame is made of matt or gloss-varnished stainless steel
and can be used alone or layered with optional cushions for added softness
colour is thoughtfully deployed: the collection launches in ivory and graphite
but cushions can be specified in the full spectrum of the brand’s fabric palette
Material innovation also plays a central role
The cushions and pads are filled with a biodegradable
recycled polyester fibre – a polyurethane-free alternative that delivers comfort without compromise
'We live in an era that demands sustainable practices,' says Gomez Paz
we tackled the challenge of polyurethane use in seating
identifying alternative solutions that are both light and comfortable.'
Beyond its aesthetics and engineering, ‘Alma’ reflects a broader ethos that sets Paola Lenti apart. Headquartered and manufacturing in Meda – a town 11 miles north of Milan
long regarded as the centre of Italian furniture production – the female-founded and led brand operates with a quiet confidence that feels almost radical in an industry still largely shaped by male voices and top-down hierarchies
Paola Lenti established the company alongside her sister Anna
who began her career as a nuclear engineer working in the aerospace industry
Their backgrounds couldn’t be more different – one rooted in material experimentation and colour
and precision – yet together they’ve built a brand defined by both creativity and clarity
while Anna – often travelling with her laptop and Excel files – handles the strategic and commercial side of the business
It's a complementary partnership built on constant exchange and mutual trust
escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox
'My sister and I have always followed our instincts,' says Lenti
'We’ve grown into an industrial reality while preserving a human dimension.' That human scale is evident in the way the company works – collaborating closely with tailors
and supporting a fully Italian supply chain rooted in long-standing relationships and shared creative potential
That spirit of shared authorship runs through ‘Alma’, too. As Lenti puts it: 'This is not just a collection of seats, but a micro-architecture that embodies the values of our company.'paolalenti.it

There is little argument that societies around the world are navigating many complicated economic
The SDGs put a framework and metrics to many of these diverse problems
But the complexity of underlying trends does not lend itself to tidy simplifications
A more nuanced diagnosis of the dynamics is important to inform problem-solving over the SDG “second half” out to 2030
this paper offers an assessment of SDG-relevant empirical trends to date
We identify four different standards to assess progress
each of which yields different interpretations of the data
The case of under-five child mortality illustrates the range of takeaways inspired by different tests
The world achieved a 20% decline in the number of deaths of children under 5 over the first seven years of the SDG era
from 6.1 million deaths in 2015 to 4.9 million in 2022
42 low- and middle-income countries saw a significant slowdown in their rate of progress compared to pre-2015 trends
and only 20 saw a significant acceleration
Fully 132 countries are on track to meet the SDG mortality target by 2030
and 60 countries are on a path to falling short
the shortfalls add up to 10.5 million children’s lives lost for good
So even though more than a million fewer children dying every year is a source of encouragement
more than 10 million deaths due to shortfalls over the next several years is a grave concern
Our empirical strategy focuses on country-level trends across 24 SDG-related indicators with time-series data available for at least 100 countries since 2015
Although we would prefer to include a wider array of indicators
limited cross-country data availability impedes our ability to do so
By applying the various lenses for assessing SDG progress
our aim is to distill key patterns amid global complexity
rather than to present precise point estimates
All forward-looking estimates should be interpreted with appropriate caution amid the inherent uncertainty and limitations embedded in such calculations
Despite the world’s deep and ongoing strains
the human condition has improved on several fronts since 2015
But many positive trends were already in motion prior to 2015 and improvement alone does not meet the higher normative standards established in the SDGs
Issue-specific progress assessments suggest issue-specific policy architectures still matter
widespread gaps relative to the world’s agreed ambitions for 2030 suggest the need for more systematic changes in approaches across SDGs
With only six years remaining to the deadline
there is tremendous value in the existence of time-bound international goals to inform substantive assessments on the nature of global sustainable development progress during a turbulent political era
A carefully nuanced approach to assessing absolute changes
and potential tipping points—country by country and target by target—remains crucial to identifying better pathways toward achieving the world’s stated ambitions

We recently developed an immuno-oncotherapy against human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced tumors based on a lentiviral vector encoding the Early E6 and E7 oncoproteins of HPV16 and HPV18 genotypes
The robust and long-lasting anti-tumor efficacy of Lenti-HPV-07 is dependent on CD8+ T-cell induction and remodeling of the tumor microenvironment
we first established that anti-vector immunity induced by Lenti-HPV-07 prime has no impact on the efficacy of a homologous boost to amplify anti-HPV T-cell immunity
To longitudinally monitor the evolution of the T-cell repertoire generated after the prime
homologous or heterologous boost with Lenti-HPV-07
we tracked T-cell clonotypes by deep sequencing of T-Cell Receptor (TCR) variable β and α chain mRNA
applied to whole peripheral blood cells (PBL) and a T cell population specific of an immunodominant E7HPV16 epitope
We observed a hyper-expansion of clonotypes post prime
accompanied by increased frequencies of HPV-07-specific T cells
there was a notable diversification of clonotypes post boost in whole PBL
We then demonstrated that the effector functions of such Lenti-HPV-07-induced T cells synergize with anti-checkpoint inhibitory treatments by systemic administration of anti-TIM3 or anti-NKG2A monoclonal antibodies
While Lenti-HPV-07 is about to enter a Phase I/IIa clinical trial
these results will help better elucidate its mode of action in immunotherapy against established HPV-mediated malignancies
The strong efficacy of Lenti-HPV-07 treatment in the preclinical model led us to set up the preparation of a phase I/IIa clinical trial
by using Lenti-HPV-07 pseudotyped with VSV-G from Indiana (Lenti-HPV-07ind) or New Jersey (Lenti-HPV-07nj) serotype in prime-boost immunizations
we asked whether: (1) a primary injection of Lenti-HPV-07ind can induce vector-specific adaptive immunity
(2) such immunity could impact the efficacy of a homologous boost
and (3) heterologous boost may have some advantage for T-cell induction
we observed that this diversification does not influence clonotypes associated with the immunodominant epitope
This suggests that the diversification primarily affects clonotypes recognizing sub-dominant epitopes
Our results provided evidence of notable synergistic effect of both anti-TIM3 and anti-NKG2A mAbs on anti-HPV effector T cells induced by Lenti-HPV-07 immunotherapy
a Timeline of single injection or prime-boost immunization with 1 × 109 TU of Lenti-HPV-07ind or Lenti-HPV-07nj
c ED50 comparison of anti-VSV-Gind neutralizing antibodies in sera from mice primed with Lenti-HPV-07ind and boosted homologously with Lenti-HPV-07ind or heterologously with Lenti-HPV-07nj
ED50 against VSV-Gind (b) or against VSV-Gnj (c) (n = 4/group)
Statistical significance was determined using a repeated measures (RM) two-way ANOVA (*p < 0.05
IFN-γ ELISPOT responses of T splenocytes from the same individual mice were studied at the indicated time points after in vitro stimulation with (d) six peptide pools spanning the full sequence of VSV-Gind
or (e) four peptide pools spanning the sequence of detoxified E6HPV16
f IFN-γresponses of T splenocytes of mice assessed at D14 after a mono-injection with 1 × 109 TU of Ctrl lentiind
Lenti-HPV-07ind or Lenti-HPV-07ind heat-inactivated at 70 °C during 1 h (n = 6)
Stimulation was performed using either the indicated lentiviral vectors or peptides both at 4 µg/ml
Statistical significance was determined by Mann–Whitney t-test (ns not significant
which can explain the reason why T-cell responses to these epitopes were not boosted with Lenti-HPV-07nj
This result showed that residual proteins originated from transgene expression during the vector production and possibly still present in the vector samples do not induce detectable specific T-cell responses
induction of specific T-cell responses by these vectors relies only on their in vivo transduction ability
a homologous or heterologous boost with Lenti-HPV-07ind or Lenti-HPV-07nj increased the intensity of the specific anti-HPV T-cell effectors without any sizeable impact of the adaptive immunity against the vector backbone

g Frequencies of expanding or contracting clonotypes
Statistical significance was determined using a one-way ANOVA in (b) and

f Network representing CDR3 sequence proximity between top 10 most abundant clonotypes of all post prime and post boost mice (n = 65 CDR3 sequences)
An edge between CDR3 sequences was added according to their LD
Groups represent a cluster of CDR3 sequence with an LD < 3
g Amino acids logo for each group of related CDR3 sequences
These results globally highlight the initiation and evolution of clonotypes mobilized by Lenti-HPV-07 immunization
which allows the expansion of subdominant clonotypes and favorizes the diversification of antigen-specific TCR repertoire
monitoring the E7HPV16 specific T cells indicated that a boost immunization did not significantly alter the clonotype diversity within a T subset specific to an immunodominant epitope
It must be mentioned that this strategy has inherent limitations
due to the lack of antigen specificity when evaluating the efficacy of lentiviral vectors
other immunogenic carriers or viral vectors that can trigger non-specific responses
Having thoroughly characterized the clonotypes that take part in the T-cell response induced by Lenti-HPV-07 vaccination
we then examined the anti-tumor function of these T cells and the possibility of disinhibiting their anti-tumor effector functions by ICI treatments
When the tumor volume reached an average of 130–140 mm3
mice were vaccinated with the optimal dose of 1 × 109 TU/mouse of Lenti-HPV-07 (n = 7) or a Ctrl Lenti (n = 6)
Tumor growth was monitored with electronic caliper
b Timeline of tumor engraftment and combinatory treatment with Lenti-HPV-07 and anti-TIM3 mAb
When the tumor volume reached an average of 130 mm3 (day 13)
mice were randomized and vaccinated with the suboptimal dose of 1 × 108 TU/mouse of Lenti-HPV-07 or a Ctrl Lenti
Mice were then treated with anti-TIM3 mAb (clone RMT3–23
A total of 8 injections was given from day 16 to day 36 (200 µg/injection)
d Therapy response rates according to RECIST criteria as follows
Complete response is defined by the complete eradication of the tumor observed during the time of the experiment
Partial response is defined by at least two consecutive decreasing measures during the treatment
Progression-free survival (PFS) is defined in all mice to reflect the duration of the response; from the day that tumor reached their maximum size until the day that tumor exceeded the maximum size again
e PFS of mice bearing TC1 tumors and treated with Lenti-HPV-07 and TIM3 blocking antibody
f Survival curves of the animals shown in (c)
Statistical significance was determined using a Log-rank Mantel–Cox test
Mice were sacrificed when the size of the tumors reached 1500 mm3
in accordance with the defined humane endpoints
Because anti-TIM3 mAb alone had no impact on TC1 tumor growth and Lenti-HPV-07 + anti-TIM3 mAb was more efficient than Lenti-HPV-07 + Ctrl Ig
the effect of combination therapy appears to be rather synergistic than additive
a Timeline of tumor engraftment and combinatory treatment with Lenti-HPV-07 and anti-NKG2A mAb
When the tumor volume reached an average of 120–140 mm3 (day 10)
mice were randomized and vaccinated with the suboptimal dose of 1 × 108 TU/mouse of Lenti-HPV-07
Mice were then treated 2-to-3 times a week with anti-NKG2A mAb (clone 20D5
A total of 8 injections was given from day 14 to day 31 (200 µg/injection)
c Therapy response rates according to RECIST criteria
d Progression-free survival time of mice bearing TC1 tumors treated with Lenti-HPV-07 and NKG2A blocking antibody
e Survival curves of the animals shown in (b)
*p = 0.0134) in (e) or by unpaired t-test in (d)
Mice were sacrificed when the size of the tumor volume reached 1500 mm3
TIM3 or NKG2A blockade alone had no anti-tumor effect in our preclinical HPV-induced tumor model
probably due to the absence of TC1 tumor-induced T cells expected to be mobilized by ICI treatment
these results show that a combination of lentiviral vector-based vaccination and ICI treatment
such as anti-TIM3 or anti-NKG2A mAb therapy
despite the induction of anti-VSV-Gind neutralizing antibodies and IFN-γ-producing T cells after a Lenti-HPV-07ind prime
a homologous boost with Lenti-HPV-07ind or a heterologous boost with Lenti-HPV-07nj potentiated anti-HPV-07 T-cell effectors to a similar extent
It is possible that circulating anti-vector antibodies or systemic T cells do not come in contact soon
with the vaccinal pseudoviral particles injected in the muscle
these particles are rapidly taken up by local dendritic cells
Deemed to act upon the T-cell (re)activation
the dendritic cells might rest unaffected by prime-induced anti-vector immunity
This could also explain the absence of any negative effect of such immunity upon the homologous boost
these results are important for the clinical introduction of Lenti-HPV-07 treatment suggesting unnecessary the separate production of GMP batches intended for prime and boost with distinct VSV-G pseudotyping
This considerably facilitates the production set-up and reduces the cost of vaccine for clinical trials
our results demonstrate the applicability of NGS to assay T-cell repertoire dynamics following i.m
Peripheral blood cells could be used as sample
We further propose the use of NGS for in immune-monitoring of patients to be enrolled in the Lenti-HPV-07 Phase I/IIa clinical trial
co-detection of anti-vector T cell immunity could obscure the results
use of NGS for immunomonitoring does not obviate the need for ELISPOT and intracellular cytokine staining to detect T-cell responses specific to the HPV-07 antigen encoded by the vaccine
there are multiple lines of support for anti-TIM3 therapy as an ICI to be either combined to anti-PD1 treatment or to replace it
we evidenced enhanced efficacy or synergistic effects of Lenti-HPV-07 vaccination with the combination treatment
The results of the favorable effect of these alternative ICI on the anti-tumor effect of Lenti-HPV-07 may be instructive for future prospective Lenti-HPV-07 clinical trials
our results validate the proof of concept for the use of anti-TIM3 or anti-NKG2A ICI when combined to Lenti-HPV-07 in further clinical trials
given that only 20–25% of cancer patients respond to ICI treatments alone
Lenti-HPV-07 is entering a Phase I/IIa clinical trial for the immunotherapy of HPV16/18-related cervical or oropharyngeal cancers
The results generated here reiterate the potential benefits of the Lenti-HPV-07 immunotherapy and further elucidate its modes of action against malignant tumors caused by persistent HPV infections
The titer was defined as “Transduction Unit” (TU)/ml which is the number of LV particles per ml able to transfer its genetic material inside the reference HEK293T cells by transduction in presence of 8 µM of aphidicolin

Mice primed at Day 0 were boosted with the same amount of Lenti-HPV-07 at Day 28
Splenocytes from all individual mice (n = 4/group) were studied at Day 42 (14 days post boost)
100–150 µl of blood were collected on awake animals by submandibular vein puncture into an Eppendorf tube containing 15 µl of heparin
Mice were euthanized by cervical dislocation according to predefined endpoints
at the end of the experimentation (day 42)
or when animals exhibited signs of cachexia
Monitoring of tumor growth was performed 2 or 3 times per a week with a digital caliper
Tumor volume was estimated as a sphere using the formula V = L × W × W/2
when tumor size reached 1500 mm3 or became ulcerated
As described previously45
T splenocyte responses were assessed by IFN-γ ELISPOT after in vitro stimulation with pools of peptides spanning the complete sequences of VSV-Gind (Genscript) or each of the detoxified E6HPV16
or E7HPV18 antigens (Mimotopes) as encoded by Lenti-HPV-07
Splenocytes from individual immunized mice were homogenized
Cells were then treated with Red Blood Cell Lysing Buffer (Sigma)
washed twice in PBS and counted in a Chemometec (Nucleocounter NC-200) cell counter
Splenocytes were then plated at 1 × 105 cells/well in 200 µl of RPMI-GlutaMAX
containing 10% heat-inactivated fetal calf serum
100 U/ml penicillin and 100 mg/ml streptomycin
1 × 10–3 M sodium pyruvate and 5 × 10–5 M of β-mercaptoethanol in ELISPOT plates (Mouse IFN-γ ELISPOTPLUS
Cells were left unstimulated or were stimulated with pools of appropriate peptide pools at 2 µg/ml of each peptide) or with 5 µg/ml of Concanavalin A (Sigma) as a functionality control
according to the manufacturer’s recommendations
Plates were analyzed in an Immunospot CTL Immunospot S6 ultimate-V Analyzer (CTL)
For the IFN-γ ELISPOT with a stimulation by lentiviral vectors
total proteins in concentrated lentiviral vector supernatants were quantified using the micro BCA Protein Assay kit (Thermo Scientific) following the manufacturer’s instructions
Neutralization assay was performed using serial dilutions of heat inactivated sera at 56 °C during 30 min
HEK293T cells and non-replicative LV particles pseudotyped with VSV-Gind or VSV-Gnj which harbor the reporter luciferase firefly gene
serial serum dilutions were incubated with 1.2 to 1.5 × 105 TU of LV particles pseudotyped with VSV-Gind or VSV-Gnj in clear flat-bottom 96-well black plates (Corning) during 30 min with gentle agitation at room temperature
in a final volume of 50 μl in DMEM-glutamax
completed with 10% heat-inactivated fetal calf serum and 50 U/ml penicillin and 50 U/ml streptomycin (Gibco)
The samples were then mixed with 2 × 104 HEK293T cells in 50 μl
the transduction efficiency was determined by luminescence
using a Luciferase Assay System (Promega) on an EnSpire plate reader (PerkinElmer) using Enspire Manager v4.13 software
blood sample from retromandibular vein were recovered in a tube containing 10 µl of Heparin Choay (Cheplapharm)
To recover peripherical blood cells from the blood samples
red cells were lysed using BD Pharm Lysis buffer (BD Biosciences) following the manufacturer’s instruction
For the E7HPV16 RAHYNIVTF-epitope-specific TCR RNAseq analysis
CD8+ T cells were then enriched via negative selection using magnetic beads (Miltenyi) and then labeled through immune-staining utilizing antibodies including anti-CD8 (clone 53-6.7
and a RAHYNIVTF-specific H2-Db dextramer (Immudex)
The CD8+dextramer+cell population was then isolated via sorting using a BD FACSymphony™ S6 flow cytometer (BD Biosciences) and BD FACSChorus™ Software v1.1
RNA was extracted from blood samples using RNeasy Mini Kit (Qiagen) per the manufacturer’s instructions
RNA quality was validated on a NanoDrop 2000c (Thermo Fisher Scientific) making sure that samples have the absorbance ratio 260/230 nm > 2.0
and further using the RNA 6000 Pico kit for 2100 Bioanalyzer (Agilent)
TCRα and TCRβ DNA libraries were prepared simultaneously using SMARTer® MouseTCR α/β Profiling Kit (Takara Bio)
Normal distribution of each group was tested using a Shapiro–Wilk test (p < 0.05) All two-way ANOVA were performed using a Geisser-Greenhouse correction. Statistical analysis was Prism GraphPad v9. In Figs. 2–5
data were represented as mean values and error bars represent SEM
Mann–Whitney unpaired t-test and Log-rank Mantel–Cox test were used to evaluate the statistical significance between groups

Meet the Milan studio designing the world’s finest yacht interiors
By Belinda Aucott-christie 05/07/2024
Contemporary yacht design has shaken off the shackles of traditional nautical design
Now freed of its fusty navy and white uniform
yacht interiors are embracing a look that’s more colourful and carefree
Tailor-made yacht interiors are also becoming more environmentally sensitive. Italian designer Paola Lenti is at the forefront of this welcome sea change
Lenti services some of the best shipyards in the world
Each year when she opens her chic pop-up café at the Monaco Boat Show
she’s inundated with boat owners clamouring to see her latest collection
Lenti’s studio has established a style that combines beauty and longevity in equal measure
Her work for prestigious makers and architects includes shipyards such as San Lorenzo
(a 63m yacht created by London-based yacht designer Bannenberg and Rowell)
It doesn’t seem to matter whether Lenti is producing furniture and soft furnishings for the deck of a super yacht or courtyard of a parterre garden
joined the company over two decades ago as CEO
Both sisters are possessed of business acumen and a commitment to using high-quality and recycled materials
“Sustainability is not a choice,” says CEO Anna Lenti
“We believe that when you have to put furniture in an outdoor space we feel that you should do it in a very delicate way
We believe the product should not be more important than the surroundings.”
The Lenti signature yarn is rope and it is one
again and again when crafting everything from sofas to bar stools
The Maison’s polephyenyl blends are quick-drying
making them perfect for withstanding the elements on board a yacht
And while Paola Lenti may be known to work with the 1 percent
the company upholds high environmental standards at every step of the production process
Their Twiggy yarn is 100 percent recyclable and eco-compatible
Despite all the practical qualities of these sun-worthy outdoor designs
working together with their research and development team have established name for quality
while at the same time establishing a design vocabulary that’s colourful and lyrical
It’s a total style that collectors can enjoy fitting together
that employs newly arrived refugees to Italy
In the last two years they also started working with Edra’s Campana brothers from Brazil
to transform unwanted materials from their factory floor into colourful one-off handmade pieces that are designed to minimise waste

Six standout Australian galleries to know now
By Belinda Aucott-christie 26/03/2025
More galleries than ever before are going on the road to participate in art fairs in scene that is rapidly maturing
Meet the passionate local owners from around Australia who are energising the creative milieu with the abstract
the Indigenous and the generally astounding
The art sphere often challenges the myth that married partners should not become gallerists—see Iwan and Manuela Wirth of Hauser & Wirth fame
And so it is that Cassandra Bird and husband Fabian Jentsch are rapidly cementing a reputation as one the Australian art scene’s supercouples with their 2023-acquired Potts Point space
an expansive four-level heritage terrace fizzing with congeniality
making visitors feel like they have popped to a friend’s (expertly curated) home for elevenses
Which is no great shock: the property doubles as the duo’s own home
respected stints in the Big Apple and Berlin
and nine years at Sydney’s RoslynOxley9 Gallery; Jentsch
get them excited as we are about those we work with,” says Bird
Meander across the property’s wooden floorboards—perhaps diverting for a chat in the communal courtyard that doubles as a social hub and ideas-exchange forum—and you will enter the realm of Perth-born graphic painter Jedda Daisy-Culley
who has a hallway and wall dedicated to her work; venture upstairs and deep dive into locally based experimental photographer Laura Moore; head into the basement and peruse the collective works the Tennant Creek Brio
out of Warumungu Country in the Northern Territory
All 24 of the gallery’s artists unite under the theme of timelessness
“We are into investigating quality and showing transformational and breakout work from artists,” says Jentsch
“The work we choose must have something that is strong value for us.” Here’s to the sanctity of marriage

It speaks volumes for the international reach of Indigenous art that D’lan Contemporary opened an outpost in New York long before expanding the gallery beyond its Melbourne roots to set up shop in Sydney
founder and director D’lan Davidson is not afraid of expanding his frontiers as a means of hawking Australia’s most vital cultural outpourings; in 2016
he left the Sotheby’s Australia auction house
where he was ensconced as head of aboriginal art
to launch D’lan Contemporary as the go-to gallery for secondary market First Nations art; and he recently travelled to Maastricht in the Netherlands for the prestigious European Fine Arts Foundation Art Fair
promoting a series of Western Arnhem bark paintings and works by Paddy Bedford
Davidson has surrounded himself with a team brimming with the requisite Indigenous art smarts
including chief curator and gallery director Luke Scholes
a mainstay of the Melbourne gallery for the past ten years
will show across all three of D’lan Contemporary’s locations
“Our exhibitions and all our advocacy work seek to further support and develop the burgeoning global interest in Australian First Nations art and artists,” says Scholes
As if further proof were needed of its commitment
the gallery donates 30 percent of its profit back to artists and their communities

Enter Nick Smith’s compact office and you notice how the walls are studded by the artworks of those he represents; this is a man
who has a more intimate connection to his stable than the average gallery chief—an instinct confirmed upon discovering that he has invested his entire life savings into the Surry Hills space
Smith’s whiteboard is teeming with collaborative projects
thought-provoking artists that his outfit—comprised of five full-time staff—is renowned for nurturing
but amazing,” says Smith in his typically reserved manner
more studious scientist than reengage gallerist
“I wanted to contribute to culture in my own way.” The gallery’s current ascension allays any empathetic fears of impending financial doom
Smith—who cut his teeth at Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane and Sydney’s Sullivan+Strumpf—collaborated with the Australian High Commission in India to represent Darrell Sibosado at India Art Fair ’25
and throughout the year will be partnering with the Sydney chapter of Soho House to host a series of private viewings and artist studio visits
he now splits his time equally between private and public projects
often mentoring artists at all stages of their creative journeys
It’s that feeling of progressions and going somewhere that I love,” says Smith

almost impossible—to imagine Palas founders Tania Doropoulos and Matt Glenn frantically trying to scoop up whoever is flavour of the month on Sydney’s perennially shifting art circuit
Here are young gallery partners prone to a slower
instead recruiting a tight roster of internationally famed artists
and choosing to nurture relationships that have been years
Case in point: video performance maestro Shaun Gladwell
who represented Australia at the 2007 Venice Biennale (a 20-year affiliate)
and Melbourne-based artist and noise-musician Marco Fusinato (15 years)
who also flew the artistic green and gold at the same festival in 2022
Add to that list Canadian multi-media artist Tamara Henderson and Irish sculptor Eva Rothschild
and it is clear Palas have a formidable roll call to lean on
“We’re investing a huge amount of time into their processes as art makers,” says Doropoulos
we’ve got really good working relationships with other galleries throughout the world.” For its founders
the Palas gallery—which opened in Sydney’s resolutely hipster Waterloo suburb just over a year ago with a silkscreen painting medley by the aforementioned Fusinato—is somewhat of a flag-planting endeavour on home soil: both earned a certain amount of their stripes overseas—Doropoulos as former artistic director of Frieze London and Frieze Studios
Australian art disciples will no doubt be praying for a long domestic residency

If Sotiris Sotiriou’s consciously balanced ensemble of black Saint Laurent suit
single gold chain and flash of bare chest are anything to go by
the Coma gallery founder wields a sharp eye—a handy attribute to have when your career depends on identifying aesthetic clout
From humble beginnings in 2016 in a subterranean road space next to Elvis Pizza on Sydney’s New South Head Road
before fully blooming at his current space in up-and-coming Marrickville
The predominantly light-industrial area has witnessed around half a dozen new gallery debuts in recent years
filled as it was with hip young Inner West couples sourcing bold
suggests Sotiriou has timed his arrival to perfection
February’s opening exhibition was hosted by Australian (but Santa Fe based) figurative painter Justin Williams
whose approach riffs on the folkloric traditions of Russian and Polish art
rich with symbolism and psychological details; this work forms a striking counterpoint to the abstract expressionism of other Sotiriou recruits
such as Zara June Williams and her partner Jack Lanagan Dunbar
who had a spell selling to wealthy clients at Nanda Hobbs
says that private clients now make up most of his customer base
as he prepares to attend three international art fairs
he estimates his artistic head count to increase by 30 percent
also point you in the direction of a fine tailor

Robb Report ANZ’s annual motoring awards set a new benchmark among glorious Gold Coast tarmac
By Horacio Silva 24/03/2025
our motoring sages and VIP guests embarked on an exhilarating journey from Surfers Paradise to Brisbane and back again—traversing an irresistible selection of terrain in our exotic rides
from deserted rainforest-lined b-roads to testing mountain switchbacks with dizzying—sometimes heart-in-mouth—views over the southern Queensland peninsula
And as befitting an event starring the crème de la crème of auto marques
we did so while savouring the best in luxury and gastronomy—capped off with an extraordinary superyacht experience at Sanctuary Cove
The ten contenders for the Car of the Year were not the only dream machines on show
The first day’s adventure kicked off at the Langham Hotel and included a midday pit stop at the glorious Beechmont Estate
where our fleet of drivers were greeted by a stunning array of vintage cars exhibited in a concours d’elegance-style display
The sumptuous feast for the eyes on offer at Beechmont
a quaint country village located between the Lamington Plateau and Tamborine Mountain
was followed by a meal for the ages prepared by executive chefs Chris and Alex Norman at the property’s hatted restaurant
with our drivers—all sporting Onitsuka Tiger’s new driving shoes—hightailing it to Brisbane and The Calile Hotel
a property which has been scooping accolades like Jay Leno collects supercars
After some much needed relaxation by the pool
that evening the drivers and press were joined by local luminaries in the hotel’s private dining room
Over an extravagant banquet they got to compare notes on marvels of engineering and design that they’d had the chance to pilot all day
They were also treated to a showcase of spectacular Jacob & Co
timepieces and Hardy Brothers jewellery and an elegant sufficiency of 40-year Glenfiddich whiskey served in gold cups worth $60,000 a pop
It made for animated discussions and more than a little impromptu shopping
And did we mention the luxury yacht experience
After a full itinerary of adventures on the road
the day ended with an invigorating late-afternoon of luxuriating aboard two new Riviera Yacht releases—the 6800 Sport Yacht and the 585 SUV—where our intrepid drivers and assorted press got to literally and figuratively take their hands off the wheel and make a case for their car of the year
But who would take centre stage on the winners’ podium
Rolls-Royce Spectre
Aston Martin Vantage
Bentley Flying Spur
McLaren 750S
Mercedes-AMG SL634MATIC+
Maserati GranTurismo
Porsche Taycan Turbo S
Ferrari Purosangue

Mercedes-Benz’s CEO Ola Källenius is expert at racing a nearly four-tonne truck across a frozen lake
Can he steer the marque’s EV-focused future as adeptly
By Ben Oliver 26/03/2025
a premade sandwich and a carton of juice) and speaks in fluent German to the mostly Austrian engineers who spend months in this bleak locale ensuring that the company’s new models can cope with the types of conditions in which vanishingly few customers will ever actually drive
They discuss the truck’s handling on ice and the progress of its test program
Källenius compliments them on the car’s dynamics—how stable it remained even at speed
how safe he felt driving it—and asks them how long they’re here
“There are some harsh realities to this job
and to the car industry,” he tells me later
“But this is what I love doing: spending time with our designers
or driving with you on an ice-lake in Sweden
I wanted to congratulate them on what they’ve achieved
We get to enjoy a nice couple of days here
Källenius might tower over most of them physically
but there’s nothing in his demeanor that hints at the disparity in their corporate statuses
Nor is this the kind of place you’d expect to find the head of one of the world’s great luxury brands: a man paid roughly $22 million last year to lead the 166,000 employees of a company valued at around $75 billion
invented the motor car and whose genuinely iconic logo has graced the nose of everything from popemobiles and Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 racer to the most expensive automobile ever sold at auction
investment analysts Bernstein described Mercedes-Benz under Källenius’s reign as a “four-wheeled cash-generation machine”
But the celebrated car marques are not like luxury brands that make watches or couture or accessories or Champagne
Look beyond the alluring badge and bodywork for a moment: the objects Mercedes-Benz and its rivals produce are insanely complex
ever-changing and hugely capital-intensive—and must succeed in an utterly cutthroat market
Their impact on the environment and the economy has always made them perennial hot-button issues politically
But the electrification of the automobile has put these companies in the geopolitical crosshairs like never before
as governments swap tariffs and risk a global trade war to ensure that they keep their respective shares of the car industry
even as it undergoes an unprecedented transformation
Add the impact of electrification to Källenius’s own manifesto for Mercedes-Benz
and this storied marque is likely to change more in the next decade than it did in the previous 138 years
“It’s a once-in-a-century transformation,” he says
“We are reinventing our original invention.”
So who is the guy steering Mercedes through this tumult
Källenius has sat for plenty of interviews in his five years as CEO (his second five-year term is set to conclude in 2029)
but this is the first time that he has offered anything more
Robb Report was invited to spend the weekend with him in Arjeplog
the tiny northern-Swedish town whose population swells fourfold each winter as the global car industry descends to test its secret new models on the area’s frozen lakes
but to reduce the chance of its future lineup being scooped
Mercedes rents its own private expanse of sheet ice from a local landowner
I watch Källenius as he test-drives the electric G at his empire’s oddest and most northerly outpost
meets local staff and records social-media footage
more secret new electric AMGs that I am definitely not allowed to see
whose debuts are much further off and which
remain hidden beneath their heavy covers outside the workshop
Källenius has a reputation for being fearsomely intelligent
but also not the type of hyper-alpha asshole who too often comes to lead a carmaker
I see that sharpness not just in the logic of his answers
I’m not sure I’d want those piercing blue eyes and that high-wattage intellect turned on me in a meeting if I didn’t have my numbers straight
It comes through in the easy egalitarianism he displays with the engineers in the workshop
or the way he’s enjoying a casual dinner and a beer with a long table of employees of all stripes when I first arrive at the unglamorous Silverhatten hotel where he’s staying—a glorified bunkhouse for the United Nations of engineers and test-drivers who flock here
This is clearly a leader who sees the obligations of his office as clearly as its privileges: an attitude underpinned by a natural Nordic modesty and reserve
“I guess your personality is something that forms in younger years
and I’m not sure you can fundamentally change it,” he tells me over coffee one morning
and maybe most Swedes are not kick-the-door-down types
I believe this should be true for anybody who is at Mercedes or has the privilege to lead Mercedes: We are custodians of that star for a brief moment
It’s my job to hand it over safe and in better condition
but the brand will look very different by the time this person is done with it in 2029
And you can add loyalty to that list of his qualities: Källenius has never worked anywhere else
having joined Mercedes-Benz in 1993 straight out of the Stockholm School of Economics
where he founded an American football team called the Traders
he studied tapes of the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots in order to write the team playbooks
he was a finance guy at first; an early posting took him to Alabama
to help set up the Mercedes factory in Tuscaloosa
where he became—and remains—a Crimson Tide fan
he was put in charge of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren supercar project; two years later
he was given control of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Powertrains
the firm’s in-house Formula 1 engine-maker
After a year as vice president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz US International back in Tuscaloosa
he was recalled to Germany in 2010 to become vice president and managing director of AMG
Mercedes’s high-performance road-car division
Then came two board positions to prove his breadth of ability—sales and marketing
followed by research and development—before he ascended to the top job in 2019 at the age of 50
The electric G-Class we’re about to drive together (now officially if awkwardly named the “G580 with EQ Technology”) is a neat encapsulation of many of the things Källenius has tried to do at Mercedes
which fits his initial plan to make everything electric—“where market conditions allow”—by 2030
with a starting price in the US of $161,500 (around $257,000
Another critical if controversial part of his manifesto is to shift Mercedes upmarket; he spun off the truck business early and is currently in the process of dropping high-volume
low-margin models including the A- and B-Classes
he wants new models to still feel like Mercedes vehicles
even if the design that underpins them is radically different from what came before
And the G-Wagen—with its gloriously anachronistic overengineering that you can feel and hear every time you clunk a door shut—epitomises the Mercedes ethos whether the vehicle is gas or electric
Other new Mercedes EVs go much further in their innovation
gaining greater advantage from their electric drivetrains given that they were designed as EVs from the outset
They use Mercedes’s new MB.OS operating system with built-in AI and receive fresh design cues inside and out—not least the mad
almost full-width hyperscreen user interface—rather than the same upright
rectilinear lines first sketched out to suit the needs of farmers and soldiers when the G-Class was introduced 45 years ago
and it’s pleasing to be driven in it by the CEO on whose watch it was conceived and executed
this is an electric G,” he says as he drifts it across the glassy frozen lake
The most important box for any G-Class to tick is the Schöckl mountain in Austria
to earn that Schöckl-proven plaque they all have
I did five trips up and down it in the electric G in the autumn
I felt it could do the Schöckl best of all.”
and with McLaren have turned this “spreadsheet guy” into a skilled driver
though most Swedes seem to have the ability to safely slide a car on ice coded into their DNA
Even with the G sideways at around 110 km/h
a plume of snow and ice billowing high behind it
Källenius has enough spare mental-processing capacity to adjust the screen settings while telling a funny story about the very first time an electric G even crossed his mind
when the company was first showing the revised G-Class
Arnold Schwarzenegger came to the unveiling and asked Källenius’s predecessor
and one of my colleagues turned to me and said
‘Do we even have an electric G in the plan?’ I said that I guessed we did now.”
Those less keen on electric cars than Arnie and Ola might be pleased by the fact that the ambition to be battery-only by 2030 has fizzled fast
Mercedes now predicts that EVs and plug-in hybrids will account for only half of its sales by the late 2020s
and the company is refreshing its range of gas engines to keep them relevant and selling deep into the 2030s
This is a systemic issue and no reflection on Mercedes products; Källenius has always averred “where market conditions allow”
“The early adopter phase is over,” he tells me
and not do anything.’ Because if you put product into the market that is so convincing that most customers go
but iPhone 4 looks pretty good,’ you can get very quick
‘I’m not going to set sail here; let’s wait and see what the weather does,’ all the other boats would be out on the ocean
But if buyers are going to be sold on EVs by the technology rather than by brand power
what does Mercedes’ 138 years of history count for
With customers attracted to new EV marques that are able to innovate unconstrained by precedent—and one of those brands having a market cap 7.5 times that of Mercedes
despite selling a few hundred thousand fewer cars per year—does heritage become a liability rather than an asset
“We also do unconventional things,” Källenius insists
“With blow-your-mind–type features like the crazy hyperscreen in the EQS and the EQE
a lot of people are looking at Mercedes who perhaps didn’t look before
We are one of the biggest automotive sponsors in e-sports
Formula 1 is off the charts; 53 percent of F1 fans are between 15 and 35
When we do crazy things like the G-Class collaborations with Moncler or the late Virgil Abloh
you go beyond the traditional auto crowd to one that buys from other luxury brands
My test is if one of my kids sends me a picture and goes
I wonder how the former finance guy now handles running one of the world’s great luxury brands and to whom he looks for inspiration
He acknowledges that he meets with Bernard Arnault at LVMH and Jean- Frédéric Dufour at Rolex but is coy about the nature of their discussions
“We also reach out to people in other luxury businesses to understand how they think,” Källenius notes
“I had the good fortune to meet Brunello Cucinelli
It’s one of the most beautiful villages I’ve ever seen
sometimes not emphasising the brand so much
A fine gentleman like that has a very clear understanding of what luxury means in his business
We brought some secret new-vehicle designs to show him and to get his input.”
high-capital-investment good like a car to a piece of clothing,” he adds
But good chefs eat in each other’s restaurants even though they have a totally different style of cooking
I sense a slight frustration from the hyperrational Swede—perhaps that he believes he has gotten the recipe right but has to wait a bit longer for diners’ tastes to catch up
the new Mercedes EVs will be the best cars the company has ever made
are as busy trying to get their heads around this brave new world as the automotive CEOs are
“This is definitely the most transformative decade since the inception of the company,” Källenius agrees
The Swabian engineers who founded Mercedes didn’t look at the horseshoe and think
‘How do we make this lighter to make the horse run faster?’ They wanted to get the horse out of the equation and do something new
We’ve always looked through the windscreen

Though he’s supposed to be in what he calls his “play years” now
Knoxville-based real-estate entrepreneur Steve Hall still finds himself working on vacation
he got the itch to build something new and started meeting with developers
and together they acquired an isolated tract on Placencia Caye
a private island just five minutes by boat from the mainland
they’ve recently started welcoming guests to Prana Maya
wellness-focused retreat that enjoys expansive views of the Caribbean Sea
the island’s lagoon and the Maya Mountains
“We designed everything to inspire people,” Hall says of the property
“Every aspect of the resort is intentional
Every service we offer is designed to create that ‘aha
The property includes seven three- and four-bedroom villas featuring locally carved wooden doors
secluded structures are sited to prioritise views of the water
and every bed at the resort is fitted with a custom grounding mat
designed to replicate a connection with nature; some studies suggest they promote mental and physical well-being
Belize’s tropical landscape is the catalyst for getting outdoors
Its unique saltwater flats give sport-fishing aficionados a bucket-list opportunity: catching what the International Game Fishing Association calls the Grand Slam—permit
So Hall and Keener recruited High Adventure Company
a global outfitter with 30 years of guiding expertise
to take guests on exclusive angling excursions
If you’re in search of less rugged activities
The design team placed it on prime real estate: the Inn’s top floor
which has 360-degree water views and 5 m ceilings
five private treatment rooms and a sound-therapy space
You can also enjoy Prana Maya’s private beach
the only sandy stretch on the island that isn’t shared with another property
executive chef Liesel Kirste cooks with indigenous ingredients—many sourced from the resort’s four-hectare farm
The menu includes elevated fare such as locally caught lobster
Even components of more casual dishes are made from scratch: at the Island Club—with its outdoor kitchen
lawn games and forthcoming palapa-shaded pickleball court—the ketchup and mayonnaise are made in-house
That gives the culinary team the flexibility to design a bespoke menu
Prana Maya is the expression of a million small details (down to the reef-safe spa products
curated by a Belizean supplier) and the location’s natural majesty
see the spectacular views of the Caribbean
turn another direction and see the beauty of the Maya Mountains
it is such an awesome and almost overwhelming feeling,” Hall says
One he is determined to share with everyone who visits

famous for its outdoor furniture and exuberant color schemes
is celebrating its 25th anniversary with new releases and as-yet-undisclosed festivities
“Color is my legacy,” says designer Paola Lenti
It’s just how my mind works,” she continues
describing the probing meditations on color that have come to define her oeuvre
Lenti has experimented with striking pigments
many of which she has gradually adapted into her signature yarns and applied to seating
and rugs for both indoor and outdoor environments
recyclable plastic that features Lenti’s Twiggy yarn
giving them an irregular color structure that produces mélange
and other patterns that are impossible to predict or replicate
Lenti moved operations to new premises in the well-known manufacturing center Meda
who handles the company’s administrative and marketing functions
she has committed to advancing and utilizing innovative manufacturing techniques
like using Diade for the new Giravolta space-dividing panels
the result of four years of intensive research
also epitomizes the Lentis’ focus on materials experimentation
now offered in 50 shades that can be combined to create almost 300 distinct hues
has become essential to the company’s standing in the outdoor furniture market
modern engineering practices and color palettes need not conflict with a local
Her collections fuse several sensibilities and approaches: Among them Lenti lists “protecting our way of working
and sharing synergies and desires so that artisanship and industry always meet.” (The company also emphasizes local sourcing and manufacturing; except for her line of hand-tufted rugs
all of Lenti’s products are made in Italy.)
At this summer’s Venice Architecture Biennale
the company sponsored the installation Freespace
a foray into the highminded world of global architecture
In a colorful juxtaposition of old and new
and Otto contemporary seating pieces—all available in an array of color options—within the centuries-old Giardini and Arsenale spaces (on view through November 25)
the brand is already planning a celebration of its 25th anniversary next year
(Details have been kept under wraps—a move to be expected
“Colors have always been an enormous influence and constant presence in my daily life,” Lenti reflects
“I don’t remember a time when I viewed the world in black and white.” Given her decades-long development of exuberant and surprising color schemes
it seems certain that this studied and highly personal variegation will continue to weave throughout Paola Lenti’s work

Sio Gene Therapies (Sio), formerly known as Axovant, intends to stop development of AXO-Lenti-PD, an investigational gene therapy for Parkinson’s disease
Sio will return the global rights to develop and market the therapy to Oxford Biomedica, which licensed the treatment to Sio in 2018
The announcement comes on the heels of the resignation of Sio’s CEO and the deprioritization of the program due to constraints on resources needed to advance the therapy
Although Oxford Biomedica has no plans to continue developing AXO-Lenti-PD, they will out-license it again to a suitable partner with sufficient resources and funding for further development, the company indicated in a press release
harmless virus to deliver three genes that provide instructions to make key enzymes that generate dopamine
Dopamine is the nerve cell-signaling molecule
produced at low levels in Parkinson’s patients
The investigational therapy is designed to provide sustained dopamine levels after a single administration
Oxford initially completed a Phase 1/2 trial of ProSavin (NCT00627588)
which was well-tolerated and significantly improved motor function at six and 12 months in Parkinson’s patients
These benefits were sustained for up to four years in most participants
AXO-Lenti-PD demonstrated increased production of the key enzymes and fivefold greater potency in improving movement and behavior compared to ProSavin
After Oxford licensed the therapy, previously called OXB-102, Sio sponsored SUNRISE-PD, an ongoing Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT03720418) evaluating AXO-Lenti-PD in adult Parkinson’s patients
Part A of the trial investigated appropriate doses for Part B
in which patients were assigned randomly to AXO-Lenti-PD or a sham procedure to serve as controls
Two participants were first treated at a low dose, which, after one year, demonstrated a good safety profile and eased motor symptoms during “off” periods when Parkinson’s medications do not effectively control symptoms
Better scores on the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Part II “Off” score
which assessed the activities of daily life
A second group of four participants
also showed a good safety profile with no serious treatment-related adverse events reported after six months
Among the two patients with available UPDRS Part II “Off” data
mean scores dropped by 21 points — a 40% improvement in motor function compared to pre-treatment
it will continue to focus on developing and manufacturing gene and cell therapies as a contract research organization
“Oxford Biomedica’s goal is to become an innovative global viral vector leader that provides solutions to cell and gene therapy for their process development and manufacturing needs across key viral vectors,” said Roch Doliveux
“The Parkinson’s programme is non-core to our strategy.”

SS: Where do you find inspiration for your collections?
PL: I can find inspiration in a good book or a work of art, architecture or design from the past. But it can also bubble up in moments of stillness and tranquility. If you learn how to listen to nature, you can discover an inexhaustible wealth of information.
PL: Our approach to design from our earliest days has incorporated our commitment to a very precise set of ecological ethics that, unfortunately, has now become a real necessity. We start by fully understanding and respecting the inherent properties of each material, using only those that are 100 percent recyclable or recycled, industrial or natural (never from animal sources though) and then process them without chemical substances harmful to living beings and the environment.
SS: What was the transition from oudoor to indoor furniture like?
PL: Having begun our entrepreneurial path with indoor accessories such as rugs, we extended our research and experimentation in the last few years to include products and architectural elements, which, layered together, can create a holistic environment, sensitive to its setting. We have brought the comfort of indoor seating outdoors and the easy informality of outdoor living indoors.

Paola Lenti and Nendo unveil 'Hana-arashi' a series of sustainable furnishings inspired by Japanese culture at Milan Design Week 2024
a breath-taking moment able to bring people together
The collection has a strong connection to Japanese culture
not only in its reference to the cherry blossom trees but also because the forms of the pieces are informed by ancient samurai armours
The petals that fall down the trees inspired the colourful cut-offs selected by the designer
who carefully combined them in different chromatic compositions
metaphorically referring to a second nature
'The starting point for the collection is the Maris mesh fabric
developed and produced exclusively by our company for outdoor collections,' says founder Paola Lenti
100% polypropylene waterproof material is available in 180 colour hues
avoiding the use of secondary materials such as sewing threads or adhesives
'Further experimentation revealed that by tweaking the temperature and heating time
specific section of the fabric can be hardened to increase its strength
thanks to alternating opacity and transparency.'
for which Nendo founder Oki Sato has a great respect
the briefs we receive from the brands and companies are based on their respective features and strengths
the project started when we were shown a small piece of the material
rather than a brief to design a specific item or use a technology
It was a piece of polypropylene mesh material that they used in their outdoor furniture,' recalls Sato
'They also showed me a sheet of material that is rigid and marbled in colour
I had the feeling that there were countless 'in-betweens' of the two features of this material
And I still vividly remember how excited I was that it would surely be an interesting project.'
Lenti adds: 'Starting from unique fabric remnants with curvilinear form
Nendo has carefully shaped them by folding and wrapping them on themselves to create products featuring high aesthetic and design value: it is indeed the nature of the material
to determine the form of the object – lamps
and baskets – without compromising the delicate texture of the fabric and its recyclability.'
It is well known that Sato loves to investigate different 'trial and error' (also the title of a 2012 exhibition) before taking the decision to commit to a specific project. '[After] getting back to my studio in Tokyo
I repeated experiments with the material in different ways
whereby the necessary strength and soft texture were retained by applying the right amount of pressure and heat
dedicated equipment was also developed to produce this collection
and we feel that this unique process is what makes this project so fascinating.'
Sato was charmed by his collaboration with Paola Lenti: 'to simply use things over and over again
designers should be required to draw out new characters and values from the materials by recreating them
I feel that this will be one of the important qualities required of the designers of the future.'
The Nendo collaboration with Paola Lenti is on view from 15 to 21 April, as part of Milan Design Week 2024
Some of the waste material that inspired the collection
The seating collection includes a range of giant bolster cushions and pebble-shaped divans
each handmade using different recycled fabrics and threads

Bright threads discarded during the production process
Italian brand Paola Lenti and Brazil’s Estudio Campana stay in the pink with an eco-friendly and socially responsible debut collaboration
and aims to raise awareness of the future of sustainable productions
and the beauty of materials with past lives
developed by the Brazilians in close collaboration with the company
are made of waste pieces of carpet or textile
At the start, the brand’s eponymous founder, Paola Lenti – a designer who works in tandem with her sister Anna, a nuclear engineer – sent a huge box full of small fragments of colourful fabrics to Brazil
The Campanas called it a ‘treasure’
There were further reasons for their enthusiasm: ‘We were intrigued by the possibility of working with a global company that holds high standards at every step of the process
We were touched by their acknowledgement of our creative process
reflected by a genuine openness to integrating the Campana gaze into this collection,’ they say
‘What could a simple piece of rope be turned into
How could we play with colours?’ wondered Paola
Inspired by nature and named after various types of insects
the resulting collection transforms unwanted materials into one-off pieces that take on organic forms; each handmade piece is slightly different
depending on ‘the catch of the day’
an atelier in Como that focuses on providing opportunities for women and men at risk of social exclusion
was put in charge of part of the production: ‘Beauty cannot and should not be separated from ethics
as well as consumption?’ reflects Paola
It’s an ethos that resonates with the Campanas
we founded Instituto Campana to offer work to different communities
from independent artisans to vulnerable people,’ say the brothers
we are working on an old dream of ours: building a park in our hometown of Brotas that merges art with nature
We planted 20,000 native trees in the past 20 years
aims to restore the Atlantic Forest that once covered this region
It will be a space for healing and contemplation.’
The two pairs of siblings also found a common enthusiasm for colour
a thousand possibilities,’ Paola says of her practice
transforming playful shapes into poetic and vibrant furnishings
A flamboyant colour palette and forward-looking design are the foundation of the brand
It has since expanded internationally and become an industry leader thanks to its research into natural materials
The Lenti sisters have always been devoted to their quest for high-quality recycled materials
which is 100 per cent recyclable and eco-compatible
a German fibre made entirely from plastic waste that serves as furniture fillings
the brand continues to innovate and exemplify a conscious design
the Campana brothers have been pioneers in sustainable design for over 35 years
creating objects that reflect their heritage and local traditions
Since their ‘Favela’ chair in 1991
they have created furniture that mixes rural features with colourful Brazilian urban views
and juxtaposes the processed with the found
Inspired by everything natural and organic
craftsmanship and artistry with sustainable
‘Metamorphosis’ marks the first collaboration between the designers and Paola Lenti
although geographically and culturally distant
have found mutual ground in their work and lives – at times by chance
at others because of conscious and shared professional choices
her sister and the Campanas are ‘linked by a series of coincidences’
while his brother Fernando and my sister Anna are Taurus
an astonishment for the aspects of life that empower us to always seek out beauty.’
The Campanas add: ‘Paola is a joy to work with
She brings humanity and a certain lightness to the table that allows things to flow in harmony.’ Beyond the seating designs
their partnership has also resulted in a film titled Che Spreco Rinunciare (What a waste to give up)
the film presents a fairy tale that explains how beautiful recycling can be.

Esteemed Italian design company Paola Lenti has recently expanded its North American footprint
bringing its ultra-chic offerings to a sprawling flagship in sunny South Florida
following new locations in California and Massachusetts
“The Miami store is designed as a concept house where
from the smallest accessory to the architectural ensemble
we present our global design philosophy,” says CEO Anna Lenti
which made its debut during the most recent Miami Art Week with new pieces by the Campana Brothers
is located in the city’s lively Wynwood neighborhood
known for its abundance of street art and the famous Wynwood Walls
polished concrete floors and neutral walls offer the perfect complement to vibrant vignettes featuring the brand’s colorful furnishings and accessories
Paola Lenti teamed up with partner Casual Furniture Group
the flagship is adjoined by a lush 4,000-square-foot garden planted with palm trees and other native flora
The aim is not only to meet the growing demand in the residential sector thanks to Miami’s recent surge in popularity
but also to create a base for drawing in yachting professionals by showcasing the company’s array of luxurious outdoor furnishings
with its elevated humidity and increased exposure to UV rays
will also give us the ideal opportunity to showcase the performance of our products,” adds Lenti
“Created to withstand even the harshest conditions
our technical yarns and exclusive materials have been particularly embraced by the yachting sector
where very high resistance standard are requested.”
Among the new introductions is the Jardín collection
initially conceived as a cultural undertaking that transcended a simple furniture collection
the line was inspired by the organic shapes imagined by visionary Cuban designer Clara Porset for the Acapulco Hotel Pierre Marqués in 1957 and later on presented at The Milan Triennial XI
Paola Lenti reinterpreted this seminal project while maintaining its original energy
who manages the Clara Porset Archive in Mexico
the brand populated the showroom with pieces from the eco-chic Metamorfosi collection
which debuted at the 2022 Salone del Mobile and was designed by Estúdio Campana’s Fernando and Humberto Campana
the latter of whom passed away in December
Featuring a special array of unique pieces—five seating options and one tapestry—that blended art and design
the collection represented an important step in Paola Lenti’s commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly across design and production
the socially-responsible pieces utilize remnants otherwise destined for landfill and provide employment opportunities for those at risk of marginalization
Conceived by both brands as a way to be more environmentally conscious of using raw materials
this collection furthers a harmonious dialogue between innovation

while keeping the combination of tradition with modernity intact
The Jardin Collection is all set to steal the spotlight at the upcoming Milan Design Week 2022
the Italian entrepreneur expresses her design philosophies as a vibrant rendition of nature in all of its glories
you have been a strong believer in simplicity and instinct
What role have these played in your creativity and craft
I keep in mind that no superstructures are suffocated by what is unnecessary
Simplicity and balance are two features that are strictly connected and are immensely important and though achieving harmony between utility and beauty is never easy
it can free the project from the conventions of the moment
one must respect materials for what they are and for what they express
Understanding their values and contents means recognising and highlighting their quality
STIR: How would you describe your relationship with textiles and how has it evolved over the last two decades of your practice
Paola: I have always liked working with fabrics while always being open to novelties and everything that intrigues me
I focus my attention on the natural and spontaneous aspects of materials such as stone
on the artisanal processes applied to them
trying to update them with new and less conventional finishes
you often cast the same colour in ethereal palettes infused with subtlety and lightness
Take us behind your process of nuance and creation
Unless the colour stems from the very nature of the materials wherein
it acts as a crucial guiding aspect for the creative process
Colourful variations on the different materials allow us to make notable products
This enables us to design wholesome indoor and outdoor settings in sync with one's expectations and the most suitable solutions
Our company's strength lies in the ability to give creative customisations
The chromatic choices we make do not strictly link to a particular product or collection
These choices are made to find the right colour in the right place
the one that in a specific moment and a specific context can give the most pleasant and correct vibration
Paola: One of my earliest memories is that of me as a child playing with two sheets of coloured paper
one blue and one orange - two contrasting yet complementary colours
Sometimes I see myself as that little girl who plays with those coloured sheets
exploring herself in the same images and contrasting shades
I recall a sense of lightness and freshness
but I feel fortunate to have remained what I once was
I am grateful for a life that despite everything has not changed me
STIR: In what do you currently find your strongest inspiration
Paola: I am a curious person and have always wanted to explore things in-depth to understand their true nature. For me, nature plays an important role and I have already thought of everything. We need to know how to listen to it to see what solutions it offers. Apart from nature I rely on books, art, architecture and design works from the past
representing an inexhaustible wealth of information
Inspirations often come also from inner silence and tranquillity
STIR: Nature and comforting curves form an important part of your style
Paola: Craftsmanship works in hand with technology to impart fundamental and essential characteristics
This interconnection tends to make the technical aspect of the product less aggressive
giving the users a sense of relaxation and tranquillity
This collaboration harmoniously combines tradition and manual ability with advanced technical solutions
Italian hand-working techniques are an inexhaustible source of inspiration
We have always tried to enhance their values while recognising and highlighting their qualities and characteristics
you have worked independently from the time you created your very first installations
What are your views on the current collaborative landscape
I have had my ideas and I have never been interested in following others' paths
I commit myself to aiming for the best without compromising
creating my professional and industrial path
which I still follow today with the same conviction and perseverance as in the beginning
I have learned to work and cooperate with realities
I have always considered the exchange of knowledge
experiences and cultures a positive moment of growth
By sharing different experiences and giving weight to each one’s skills
STIR: What has been the most memorable turning point in your career
Can you name some of the collections that personally impacted your journey
Paola: The decisive turning point came in 2000 when my sister
decided to help me in elevating my small activity to the platform of an industrial company
She took over the management and gave me a chance to focus on designing
I think the most notable moment was the introduction of Rope - the outdoor high tech yarn which enabled our company to become what it is today
It has allowed us to take a refreshed path
which is still one of the featureful characteristics that make us different from others
This year we celebrate the first 20 years of Rope
with a lens on the future that will bring us many novelties
STIR: How did you achieve a successful marriage of fabric and furniture
and what are the lessons learned in that course
our philosophy is to design and produce comfortable
We have created a fresh collection of fabrics for the outdoors that offers the users a possibility to get in tune with nature
All the fabrics that we use as the upholstery for our products are exclusive to Paola Lenti
designed by us starting from the yarn and have played
a key role in the company’s evolution
two production activities coexist: one relates to fabrics and materials
We reserve the same value for both production aspects
From the experience we have gained in these nearly 30 years of activity
we have understood that to design any environment
it is necessary to have a common thought that makes the whole cohesive and credible
are the greatest opportunities and challenges for design today
Paola: I believe that every company today must seize the opportunity, if not feel the duty, to pay close attention to containing consumption, choosing non-polluting materials and processes and favouring local suppliers. They should aim for sustainability believing that beauty cannot and must not be separated from ethics
One needs to be considerate about the circular economy
a model we must all aim for if we want to live and produce ethically since our planet's resources are limited
STIR: What is the biggest issue that the creative industry needs to fix
Paola: I believe that the activity of a company must be seen today within the environmental and social context in which it operates
The entrepreneur must act responsibly because his choices have significant effects on the territory
an industrial activity that wants to address the issue concretely and consciously must take into account the entire life cycle of the product
In the company that I manage together with my sister Anna
we started thinking about eco-sustainable materials and products more than 10 years ago
when it was not yet such a heartfelt topic
STIR: What are some of the projects this year that you are most excited about
Paola: On the occasion of the Milano Design Week
we will introduce a new series called Jardín
inspired by the collections created in the 1950s by the Cuban designer Clara Porset
I discovered her works while leafing through a book where the furniture designed for the hotel Pierre Marqués in Acapulco was featured
I immediately fell in love with the extraordinary linearity of the forms of the seating pieces that make the collection so actual even today
We decided to pay homage to this designer with a strong personality by returning her works enhanced by modern technological aspects
The whole operation was possible thanks to the precious collaboration of Professor Jorge A
Vadillo López who founded and is still the curato of the Clara Porset Archive at CIDI Centro de Investigaciones de Diseño Industrial of UNAM Universidad Autónoma de México
From capturing fleeting moments to uncovering universal truths
the 2025 edition reveals the depth of visual storytelling across cultures
A case of two cities—both bona fide global cultural capitals—reveals insights on precarity in the creative industries
In its fifth collaboration with the luxury brand
evokes the experience of "walking on a Parisian street
with a focus on the power of the sun to imagine a sustainable future for humanity

The leading authority for the Architecture & Design community
Recharge in a Restored Spanish Farmhouse in Menorca
“Textiles and color have formed the basis of our work since the very beginning.” So states Paola Lenti of her namesake company
Lenti studied graphic design at the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan
and then went on to work as an art director for various fashion companies
where she would create displays and environments
making small glass and porcelain objects but switching to felt rugs
which she says represented the true start of her self-named brand
Materials research and sustainability have been guiding forces since day one. In 1997, she began working with designer Francesco Rota
a collaboration that has produced some 70 collections and is still going strong
It was 2000 when they turned their focus to outdoor
aiming to create furnishings that are as attractive and comfortable as those for interiors
That same year was when her younger sister Anna came on as managing director
overseeing administrative and marketing aspects
the company they’ve forged is synonymous with innovation but also with the handmade
global but also local (except for a few items
Paola Lenti products are all made in Italy)
and unexpected texture and color combinations
my entrepreneur father would take me along when he went to the countryside to paint and teach me to appreciate all the surrounding beauty
Another childhood memory is receiving a book of colored collage paper and cutting up and combining the dark orange and dark turquoise pieces
Each time I start selecting colors for a collection
ID: How does color play through your collections
PL: We focus on it not only for individual fibers but also in the fabrics we weave from those fibers
and for the collections and the ways they work together
Even our solid fabrics often have more than one color of thread woven in
finding increasingly better materials in terms of both ecological sustainability and durability
ID: Which designers have you collaborated with
ID: How long have you participated in that
PL: Yes, Torno Subito at the W Dubai-The Palm hotel
The chef is Massimo Bottura of the famous Osteria Francescana in Modena
whereas the Dubai restaurant is playful and colorful
recalling the joyful Italian Riviera of the 1960s
PL: A designer friend of Bottura’s knew our brand and introduced him to our products
Bottura liked them so much that he suggested using our pieces to the restaurant’s designer
We ended up providing the furniture and choosing the colors
The seating is from our existing collection but we custom-designed the square dining tables with tops of glazed lava stone
ID: What’s coming up for the company
PL: We are working with Adam Tihany on the MV Esmeralda cruise ship. We just completed work on 3.14 Plage
we recently finished designing the interiors and exteriors of Livingspace’s renovated and expanded furniture show- room
we’re always working on developing new materials—and improving the ones we already use.

COVID-19 is a viral infectious disease whose main symptoms are respiratory
neurological manifestations affect many COVID-19 patients
These symptoms may include loss of taste and smell
but also other more serious conditions such as acute encephalopathy
whose pathophysiological mechanisms are not yet fully understood
must be taken into account in the vaccine strategies currently in development
researchers from the Institut Pasteur-Theravectys Joint Laboratory
the efficacy of a lentiviral vector (LV)1 when used for primary vaccination by the muscular route
This vaccine candidate not only induces in animals long lasting immunity based on neutralizing antibodies but also a strong durable cellular immunity linked to T-cells
researchers from the Institut Pasteur-Theravectys Joint Laboratory have demonstrated
the ability of the Lenti-S vaccine candidate to induce protection not only of the lungs but also of the central nervous system against SARS-CoV-2 infection
In all animals immunized with the vaccine candidate
viral replication is absent or largely reduced in the brain
Immunization also eliminates the infection-mediated inflammatory phenomena in the brain
The researchers established that the booster injection of Lenti-S by nasal route is necessary in the protection of the brain
"Intranasal vaccination allows immune defenses to be directed straight into the upper respiratory tract and therefore act immediately at the site of entry of the virus into the body
The protective capacity of the respiratory and nervous systems of Lenti-S extends with the same efficacy to the Gamma variant of SARS-CoV-2 as to the ancestral strain" explains Laleh Majlessi
director of research at the Institut Pasteur-TheraVectys Joint Laboratory
Beyond the induction of potent neutralizing antibodies
the mechanism responsible for this broad spectrum of protection involves protective immunity based on T cells
whose efficacy remains intact against the Gamma variant of the SARS-CoV-2
despite accumulated mutations in their Spike protein
These data must now be confirmed in human clinical trials
The lentiviral vector is devoid of all viral genes in order to be harmless to humans and produces the Spike protein
is the key to entry of the virus into human cells.2. In the animal model used in this study
expression of the human SARS-CoV-2 receptor (human ACE2) has been artificially induced in the organs including the brain to mimic the neurological effects of COVID-19

Eponymous Italian furniture brand Paola Lenti
can be spotted upon the decks of the most well-appointed yachts and vistas throughout Europe
It’s no small wonder why the fashion-forward proprietors of BeDesign
have dedicated the entire third floor of their luxurious Montrose furniture boutique to showcase the store's exclusive partnership with the prestigious indoor/outdoor brand
they threw a party at BeDesign on Wednesday
March 6 to showcase the brand and the comprehensive renovations to their building
Celebrating 25 years of collaboration with Paola Lenti, designer Francesco Rota and CEO Anna Lenti traveled from Italy to join BeDesign for the unveiling of the new Linea for Outdoor line as well as the store's display of their wares Moderated by the always stylish Patty Dominguez, vice president of design and architecture for Cosentino
invite-only crowd gathered for a charismatic conversation on all things Paola Lenti
"Through the unveiling of our extraordinary third floor
BeDesign brings to life its passion project – a rooftop paradise that envelops guests in the unmatched mastery of color and design by Paola Lenti," Dueñas said in a statement
we have forged an interior design nirvana that sets a new standard
The Paola Lenti experience here is our realized dream: vibrant
This rooftop oasis stands as the crowning achievement of our endeavors."

Rota and Lenti sat down with CultureMap to discuss the brand’s design concept
and the question: Why has Paola Lenti found so much success in Houston
When Francesco Rota met Paola Lenti 27 years ago
they took a look at industrial-grade felts
refining those to compressed felt textiles
and created what Francesco refers to as “flying carpets,” colorful floor coverings that became an immediate success
these pared-down new textiles have taken them on quite an adventure
Francesco’s creative process for designing new pieces is beautiful in its simplicity
The Linea chaise lounge is still as iconic twenty-five years later as it ever was
which is the company’s companion outdoor piece
Anna makes sure the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed back at Paola Lenti’s headquarters near Milan
Realizing in 2003 that the outdoor furniture market remained limited to traditional materials
Anna and Francesco wax poetic on those early days
recalling how the only options for outdoor furniture were teak wood or stark
As it did by using industrial felts for indoor furniture
durable materials that could be retuned for outdoors with the retail market in mind; the answer: polypropylene
meaning the brand was into sustainability long before it became a buzzword
we asked if Paola Lenti's outdoor line can withstand a climate as diverse and extreme as Houston’s
We investigated materials because we wanted a product to perform
So metal had to be a certain kind of steel
“The textile needs to be of a material that resists UV rays
if you think about a yarn that makes textile
Curious how the outdoor market has evolved in 25 years
Anna explained that what clients are looking for now is different than what they wanted in the '90s
it took awhile to convince customers to spend as much as $15,000-$18,000 for an outdoor sofa and between $5,000-$8,000 for each outdoor armchair
which is what the pieces retail for at BeDesign
people were not ready to spend and invest this amount of money for the outdoors
because they weren’t used to having beautiful furniture outdoors,” she says
“Year-by-year the market completely changed because people spend so much more time outdoors
Now people want to have more continuity between their indoor and outdoor furniture.”
chose Paola Lenti for two of the city’s most talked about new projects — Cocody Restaurant in River Oaks and The Thompson Hotel
Paola Lenti is the best choice for ultra-premium outdoor furniture that holds up to Houston’s heat and humidity
paying attention to the quality of materials: always looking for a point of contact
“I fell in love with the colors and vibrancy of the brand ten years ago when I was introduced.”

Scientist at the Institut Pasteur- TheraVectys Joint Laboratory have compared the immune responses of mice following a booster vaccination with either the candidate vaccine Lenti-COVID via nasal route or a third dose of messenger RNA vaccine via muscle route
IgG antibody responses in the blood were amplified
only Lenti-COVID administered intranasally
induced major players of mucosal immunity in the airways : (i) mucosal anti-Spike igA
Induction of these major players of mucosal immunity by the Lenti-COVID vaccine candidate leads to complete pulmonary protection against the Delta and the Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2
demonstrating the suitability of the Lenti-COVID vaccine candidate as an intranasal booster against COVID-19
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and the adaptive immunity initially induced by the currents COVID vaccines need to be reinforced
the development of a vaccine that would block the transmission of the virus in the long term and maintain this capacity against various emerging variants appears relevant
even if the SARS-CoV-2 virus become endemic
a clinical phase will have to be initiated to confirm the safety and the effectiveness of this approach in humans
The Seattle Times calls the music of John Lenti “a joy to behold,” while Gramphone praises Lenti’s playing of theorbo
and baroque guitar for its “nuanced beauty and character.” He deploys his “uncommonly big sound” (Third Coast Digest) to acclaim as a soloist and chamber musician
