MISKOLC (Hungary) - The Group Phase of the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket 2024 is right behind us and there were lots of exciting moments during the first three days of competition

A forward-looking pilot programme designed to integrate artificial intelligence into urban management has officially launched in Miskolc
The initiative aims to strengthen local economic development
improve education and digital competencies
and revitalize tourism with the help of advanced technologies
At a press conference held on Wednesday in the city
Government Commissioner for Artificial Intelligence László Palkovics introduced the programme
with his remarks preceded by a short presentation by an AI-generated avatar modelled after him
Palkovics noted that Miskolc is currently the only Hungarian city actively pursuing data-driven governance
He emphasized that the future depends largely on past experiences
and the data collected by municipal companies could serve as the foundation for planning the city’s development and operating its systems more efficiently through AI
This initiative aligns with the Hungarian government’s broader vision
pointing to AI-based governance as a key element of the national AI strategy first adopted in 2020
That vision includes managing Hungary’s data assets and developing a robust data economy
The government has revised the national AI strategy
and a final version of the updated roadmap is expected soon to guide developments over the coming year
Key pillars of the strategy include the responsible management of data resources
establishing the technological infrastructure required
and creating support systems to drive implementation
Palkovics underlined the importance of public dialogue around AI
Mayor József Tóth-Szántai highlighted the need for Miskolc to reinvent itself—from a steel city to a smart city
and eventually into a nature-centred urban hub associated with the Bükk mountains
He suggested AI could play a critical role in improving public services such as city operations
Miskolc plans to host an annual conference on AI
where it will report on its goals and achievements
President of the Dennis Gabor University (DGU) Ferenc Dietz also spoke at the event
stating that AI presents new opportunities not just for businesses but for communities and individuals as well
The university launched its AI Knowledge Centre in January
The event was moderated by ‘M.I.SKOLC’ (M.I
the city’s own AI-generated digital avatar
and Dietz signed a cooperation agreement on the AI model project
The initiative will involve collaboration between the city of Miskolc

Researchers from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology in Finland, and the University of Miskolc explored further opportunities for collaboration within the CiRCLETECH project. The aim was to outline future project possibilities and foster the formation of research groups working on multidisciplinary topics.
The main goal of the CiRCLETECH project is to significantly contribute to the professional development of researchers and research management professionals in the three partner institutions involved in the consortium, focusing on the circular economy. Additionally, the project aims to establish a knowledge and competence center, the CiRCLETECH HUB, at the University of Miskolc.
In line with these objectives, a workshop was held in Miskolc at the end of the past year to explore further collaborative opportunities with partner institutions.
“We sought areas during the workshop where we could continue the project with the involvement of additional international partners,”
– said Prof. Dr. Gábor Mucsi, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering.
The event was part of a series of initiatives organized by the university to promote sustainable development and natural resource management.
“In November, we hosted numerous programs that allowed us to showcase the work being done at the University of Miskolc not only domestically but also on an international scale. This program was a continuation of those efforts,”
In addition to identifying opportunities for collaboration, participants outlined future project prospects and established research groups to work jointly on the topics.

In a repeat of the 2022 Final, France - like they did a year before - secured a narrow 67-63 victory over rivals Spain
Les Bleues trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half
but turned the tables around behind the duo of Lilyana Fontcha and Ainhoa Risacher in the second half
Fontcha finished with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds
Sara Okeke was Spain's leading scorer with 13 points
Portugal and Turkiye were the relegated nations
Montenegro and Sweden replacing them from Division B
Risacher was named tournament MVP after guiding France to the title last summer
Spain are the only team to have reached double-digits in terms of titles and they are also the nation with the most podium finishes in competition history
The Soviet Union still hold the record for the longest gold rush after winning the first six editions from 1976-1987
All the action will be available to watch live on the FIBA YouTube channel - and can also be accessed via the respective game pages on the website

the transformation will create a conference room and offices
The building will continue to house the student club
which will be directly linked to the 2 200 m2 community space in front of the building
The services of the university canteen remain available during the renovation works: the food court has been temporarily relocated to the renovated extension of the E/2 dormitory
where students and staff can continue to enjoy their meals and organise small community events

Menta Bar & Gastro
including some ballers new to the FIBA scene - here are some potential headline acts
MISKOLC (Hungary) - The curtain will soon be raised on the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket 2024 in the Hungarian city of Miskolc
with plenty of ballers ready to bring the noise at the event
You can vote below for which player you think will make the biggest impact in this year's competition
Make sure to also check out who to watch in the Division B tournament
strength and skills of Okafor means she could be on the early radar for potential MVP if Spain makes their usual deep run
She has won a stack of accolades at youth level playing with the famous Sigle XXI club
Okafor is also great in transition and can skip through traffic to the hoop from the wing which makes her difficult to guard for opposing defenders
The forward was leading scorer for Germany at the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket Division B last summer when she was a major factor in taking them to the top flight
Her finishing at the hoop was superb and as one of only two players into double-digits for her team
she shot almost 60 percent from the field and did the hard yards with six boards per game too
Catching the eye at last year's edition
athleticsm and ability to be impactful at both ends of the court was a difference-maker
Kibdei posted a near tournament double-double of 13.7 points and 9.3 rebounds
perhaps she can target an All-Star Five place this time around if the young Cats do well
It's an exclusive club the Israeli star is joining as one of very few players who have stepped out at the event three times
Zilbershlag will be the centerpiece of her team's challenge this time
She has twice posted a double-digit points return and is very strong coming in off the wing to crash the boards
her teammates will look to her for inspiration
At first glance of her production last year when she represented Latvia
there is barely anything registered of note
the guard has made huge strides in the past year and put up good numbers on the domestic scene
as well as posting a fantastic Baltic Cup display earlier this year
This time around she has the chance to elevate herself into leader material
Finland are on a roll after their fourth place finish in 2023 and subsequent historic first ever FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup appearance last month
but it might be scoring machine Melnikova that helps them
She averaged a massive 25 points per game in her domestic league last season so knows where the bucket it
The forward will look to push the reset button after a stone cold first FIBA event last summer
There were high hopes since she was WABA League U15 MVP
she's played for Cinkarna Celje senior team and made improvements to her game
she should make more of a splash at this edition
Without making an impression at last year's edition
Gazic played an important cameo for Croatia at this year's historic debut showing at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024
The forward scored 7 points per game and will be looking to increase this output to double-digits in Miskolc
She also has good hands a nice IQ which is helpful defensively
An outstanding guard who is still only 15-years old but played at last year's edition and also at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup
Broliron is potential MVP material in Miskolc
she will be a deal-breaker with her exquisite eye for a pass and her quick feet on defense

In the extra time Acolatse shot towards our goal
The teams left for half time with a 1-1 draw

Sanicanin shot from 7 metres but Makreckis was able to block
Traoré's cross was met by Alex Tóth inside the penalty area
but our 19-year-old midfielder could not find the net
Makreckis raced down the right flank and his dangerous cross was saved by the Diósgyőr defenders
Vancas' shot was blocked by Cissé and the ball avoided the goal
replacing Keita with Júlio Romao and Barnabás Varga with Saldanha
who had been playing with ten men since the middle of the first half
Alex Tóth's pass was followed by Saldanha's strike
Traoré tricked his way inside the opponent's box and shot with great power
but the attempt missed the goal of Diósgyőr

This scene is looking downstream from Szinva Terrace Park towards a tunnel at Kazinczy Ferenc Street. The streetscape here represents the spectrum of the last century that includes from the Habsburg period, the interwar kingdom, and communism with the modernist apartment tower overshadowing the stream
representing the democratic period that began in 1989
when Hungary and its neighbors abolished one-party rule
we see the Szinva flowing west to east through the city
which grew in a linear fashion along its banks
It is reminiscent of the Huatanay stream in Cusco which I documented earlier
the Szinva had tributary brooks which were hidden beneath the streets in the coming decades
On this 1884 map the streams are highlighted and it is easy to see how the city can flood when its streams flow parallel to each other
industries along its banks released pollution into the water
Seeking to control flooding and hide the stench of the stream
its course was transformed into a canal with tunnels in some places
In this image from 1977, we see a tributary of the Szinva channeled into a sewer
hiding a key element of the city’s natural history
On a street map closer to the present day the tributaries are invisible and two segments of the Szinva are also hidden beneath the surface
One is a 600 meter tunnel under Kalvin Janos Street
and there is a shorter tunnel under Arany Janos Street
The former is a wide boulevard where there is room to daylight the stream
The latter is a narrow parking lot next to an apartment tower
At the corner of Ferenc Rakoczi Street, this undated postcard shows the Avas Reformed Church in the background. It is the fourth church on this site, dating to 1489. It is a survivor of history
having withstood Catholic-Protestant conflicts
Ferenc Rakoczi was a prince who ruled Hungary from 1703 to 1711
an unsuccessful uprising that sought to prevent the Habsburg family from seizing the Hungarian throne
The same scene today looking upstream shows the old church
beaux arts on the left and modernism on the right
Janos Kalvin is the Hungarian translation of Swiss theologian John Calvin
His ideas were popular among Hungarians and having a Protestant faith gave them a sense of identity when Hungary was a battleground between Catholic Austria and the Muslim Ottoman Empire
Continuing downstream, the architecture becomes more functional than historic, the apartment blocks identical to any city in the former Warsaw Pact
green space along the stream allows for a bike path and benches to follow the water
The Szinva leaves Miskolc and flows into the Sajo River
Going upstream, the Szinva emerges on the surfaces at the eastern end of Kalvin Janos Street, at Bela Bartok Square. The course here runs as a concrete channel in straight segments past small homes and apartment blocks. This undated photo of the steam’s burial is near Bartok Square, named after a famous composer. Facing the square is the city’s music academy
Power lines were removed from sight and replaced with trees
making the prefabricated apartment complex more approachable in its appearance
Further upstream in the densely wooded hills overlooking Miskolc is Hungary’s tallest waterfall, created in 1928 when the Palace Hotel was built above this scenic cascade. The period, clientele, and architecture remind me of the 2014 film Grand Budapest Hotel
when these palaces for temporary residence hosted former nobility
The designated source of the Szinva River is accessible to the public
carved as a wall with spigots of the stream’s water flowing out of a mountainside
This is where the story of the stream begins as it seemingly comes to life
In neighboring Romania, there is a similar urban stream, Canalul Morii in the city of Cluj-Napoca

Viktor Orbán has made migration the key issue in Miskolc
a city far from the border he wants to seal
A few residents think they might have seen one or two people back in 2015 but cannot be sure
Others say their friends have seen migrants in the streets but admit they have not seen any themselves
And yet, in this city of 160,000 inhabitants in north-east Hungary
a fierce election campaign is under way in which there is one overriding issue being discussed ahead of the vote on 8 April
It is not the recent series of corruption scandals involving government officials and vast sums of money
Nor is it the depressing state of local healthcare or low wages

Thank you for your feedback. The tone for the election in Miskolc – as across the country – has been set by Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, who is seeking to win a third consecutive term on a far-right platform of sealing Hungary’s borders to migrants
If Miskolc is not to be a place of “ghettos and no-go zones”, said Orbán on a campaign visit to the city earlier this month
“There are two paths ahead for Hungary to choose from,” said Orbán. “We will either have a national government, in which case we will not become an immigrant country, or the people of George Soros form a government and Hungary will become an immigrant country.”
Orbán has tried to portray opposition parties as puppets of Soros, the Hungarian-born American financier and philanthropist who has spent billions on developing civil society in post-communist countries
Posters plastered across Hungary portray Soros as a grinning
desperate to flood Hungary with refugees and destroy the country in cahoots with the opposition
Each day brings new salvos in the government messaging on migration
posted a video on Facebook earlier this month shot in Vienna
in which he accused Muslim migrants of ruining the city and said if Hungary also allowed them in
a Fidesz MEP and long-time associate of Orbán
made a similar video in the Molenbeek district of Brussels
“This is not a question about the next two or three years,” said Deutsch during an interview at an upmarket Budapest cafe. “It’s a question of the next half century. What will Europe be?”
Read moreMany of Orbán’s critics say the endless migration rhetoric is merely a device to distract attention from the numerous corruption scandals in the prime minister’s circle
have been running exposés about offshore accounts and criminal schemes linked to top officials
the opposition is divided and much of the population apathetic about politics
Opinion polls suggest that the migration rhetoric is probably working well enough among Orbán’s base to win him another term
Changes that the government has made to electoral law over the past eight years are likely to help him win
Recent polls in Miskolc suggest Fidesz and its candidates are polling at between 35% and 40%
figures that are likely to be enough to win Orbán a parliamentary majority

in north-east Hungary: a few people think they might have seen a migrant or two back in 2015 but can’t be sure

The city has struggled to integrate its large Roma population
and tensions were inflamed when Orbán compared potential future migrants to the local Roma community
But the only real migration crisis in the city is that locals are trying to leave
either for Budapest or for other EU countries
It is estimated that over 20,000 residents have left over the past decade
locals complained of government corruption
economic hardship and expressed frustration at the state of healthcare
And yet migration kept coming up in conversations with local people as the decisive factor

is campaigning on corruption but is also attacking Orbán for being not harsh enough on migrants
admitted that migration was not a huge issue in Miskolc
the campaign pamphlets stacked in his office
have the headline: “Orbán has already let in 2,300 migrants.” The leaflets incorrectly allege that these people were given Hungarian citizenship
Orbán shows no signs of toning down the rhetoric prior to the election
and has said he plans to take the fight to Brussels after the vote
to prevent the EU from imposing redistribution quotas on member states

In recent years, figures close to the government have taken control of much of the country’s media landscape, especially local newspapers and radio stations, and critics say this has helped Orbán to base the entire political agenda around migration.

Local government authorities in the town of Miskolc, Hungary, should halt issuing eviction orders to Roma residents of social housing, and should promote adequate, sustainable, non-discriminatory solutions to housing segregation, says a field assessment visit report published by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on 1 September 2016
The report is based on a visit led by Michael Georg Link
ODIHR Senior Adviser on Roma and Sinti Issues
to Budapest and Miskolc between 29 June and 1 July 2015
The visit was triggered by allegations of discrimination in the provision of adequate social housing for Roma residents in the city of Miskolc
Local social housing legislation had been amended
leading to evictions of Roma tenants in the “Numbered Streets” area of the city
The report notes Hungary’s promotion of Roma inclusion and the adoption of relevant policy documents
The report also raises concerns about joint control activities (i.e.
unauthorized snap inspections) conducted by local government agencies in predominantly Roma neighbourhoods
“ODIHR welcomes the judgments of the Hungarian Supreme Court
the report of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights
and the decision of the Equal Treatment Authority on the unlawful measures undertaken by the Miskolc authorities regarding the housing provided to Roma residents of Miskolc,” said Mirjam Karoly
evictions orders were issued and implemented
at which point the Roma population in Miskolc had significantly decreased
from the original 900 to less than 400 people.”
The report calls on the local and national authorities to address and fully implement these decisions
sustainable and non-discriminatory solutions to housing segregation
in close co-operation with Roma representatives and civil society
ODIHR also urges the government to monitor the developments in Miskolc
and maintain efforts towards housing desegregation
In the 2003 Action Plan in Improving the Situation of Roma and Sinti within the OSCE Area
participating States committed to implement effective anti-discrimination legislation to combat racial and ethnic discrimination in all fields
participating States pledged to “involve Roma and Sinti people in the design of housing policies
rehabilitation and/or maintenance of public housing projects meant to benefit them” and “ensure that housing projects do not foster ethnic and/or racial segregation.”

The Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park in Hungary has welcomed two new residents and completed a series of renovations with ERDF funding
The changes are intended to meet visitor needs and improve the zoo’s environmental footprint
A lion and a lynx are the star attractions of the new ‘Sahel showroom’
a new 200 m2 enclosure that features animals from this northern African region
The tiger house was renovated and a new visitors’ centre was built
equipped with solar panels on the roof and a ramp for wheelchair access
The renovations were completed in time for the zoo’s reopening on 1 May
The zoo first opened its doors on 20 August 1983
At the time it was called the Miskolc City Game Park
It is located in a 21-hectare hornbeam-oak forest connected to the Bükk National Park
which presents the rich flora and fauna of the Bükk Mountains
The zoo is home to around 700 specimens of nearly 130 species and varieties
It also takes part in international breeding programmes that have made it possible for animals extinct in the wild to survive in zoos
This project cost a total of EUR 1.17 million and was one of the most extensive the zoo has undertaken

Hungary — Éva Molnár’s family got the eviction notice while she was in the hospital being treated for severe burns after her house burned down
wasn’t the result of the fire’s destruction
Molnár’s family is one of more than 120 that have been forced to leave the “Numbered Streets,” a poor Miskolc neighborhood consisting mostly of Roma
an impoverished Roma neighborhood minutes away from their old one
But they worry about what they will do next
“It’s hard that no one is listening to us when we have so much to say,” said Molnár
after the local government decided to redevelop the area
eliminating a section of publicly subsidized
The tenants who were forced to leave were evicted mainly because their rental contracts had expired or they were behind on rent
Local government officials — who did not respond to requests for interviews — have said in published reports that the evictions are addressing urban blight in a crime-ridden neighborhood
Part of the neighborhood is slated to be turned into a parking lot for a renovated soccer stadium
But local activists contend the move is part of Hungary’s history of discrimination against the Roma and a continuation of efforts to drive them out of urban centers and to segregate them in substandard rural communities
where Roma are pressured into either a Roma ghetto or emigrating to Canada,” said Aladár Horváth
a non-governmental organization in Budapest that provides legal assistance and representation for Roma
noting that some of the evicted have opted to leave the country
What makes this case unusual is that local officials offered the residents cash — 2 million forints or about $7,300 — if they moved out of the city and agreed to not sell or remortgage purchased property for at least five years
Nine municipal councils outside of Miskolc
adopted decrees that would exclude anyone purchasing property in their municipalities from receiving government benefits
according to a joint report from the Office of the Commissioner of Fundamental Rights
But the low-income residents of the Numbered Streets won a key decision when Hungary’s Supreme Court
ruled in May 2015 that the city’s action targeting the Roma was illegal
The court said the city’s decree discriminated against those living in low-income public housing because people living in higher quality public housing were offered the possibility of relocating within the Miskolc city limits
Hungary’s Equal Treatment Authority fined the municipality 500,000 forints
and ordered the city to draw up a plan to accommodate the displaced low-income residents
“Steps to eliminate the slums will continue,” Miskolc Mayor Akos Kriza was quoted as saying in a Daily News Hungary article from January
Kriza said the elimination of the slums was one of the city’s most important goals
supported in a petition reportedly signed by 35,000 local residents
The evictions in Miskolc have displaced hundreds of Roma
who have faced discrimination and problems with social integration in Hungary and around Europe for hundreds of years
about 60 percent of Roma live in secluded rural areas
For about 40 families evicted from their homes in Numbered Streets
Those families who still live in the Numbered Streets neighborhood live in fear that they
will be forced to leave with nowhere to go
but I do mind that we have no opportunity to go to another place afterword,” said Istvane Nagy
Her left arm is always at a 90-degree angle against her chest
and her palm faces up with curled fingers as the result of a stroke
the mayor who has vowed to continue the evictions
Nagy voted for Kriza because she thought he would be good for the residents of the Numbered Streets neighborhood
“He knows us very well… I have no clue what happened to him.”
Nagy said the last time she talked to Kriza was some time in 2000
“He’s not willing to talk to us anymore,” she said
The mayor and the deputy mayor did not respond to multiple e-mail requests for interviews
Nagy said she didn’t take them seriously and wasn’t fearful because she wasn’t behind on her rent
Nagy said her rent has been doubled for a house that has no running water and no toilet
reported in April 2015 that the government increased monthly rent from 8,000 forints
standards but difficult for the Roma population where unemployment is rampant
executive director of the Legal Defense Bureau for National and Ethnic Minorities
said after they began doing fieldwork in Miskolc
it became clear that the city was trying to get rid of segregated areas without offering social policy solutions
“It is a very grave violation of rights,” Muhi said
“Miskolc has breached its domestic and international legal obligations… and in the 21st century
it should be impossible for a municipal government to do such things.”
Muhi went to the Numbered Streets in the summer of 2014 to talk to locals and record complaints
the neighborhood was a perfectly livable place
“I keep saying that Miskolc can be one of our greatest failures
“The right to accommodation is a human right
And Miskolc sets a counter-example — an example of how not to do an accommodation policy.”
president of the Roma Minority Self-Government of Miskolc
said that many of those who were evicted for being behind in rent could have been given chances to pay a little at a time
“Although the government calls itself ‘Christian,’ there is no Christianity in their behavior,” he said
“The only thing we want is that we all stay human and that the politicians should look at us as humans
Hungarian government officials have little political incentive to address the plight of the Roma or other minorities
noting that the government’s tough stance against Muslim refugees in 2015 increased its political support
that as long that there is political use in it and a political advantage in it
Hungary will simply not step forward in that problem-solving process,” Varadi said
and it doesn’t have the will to solve itself because as long as xenophobia brings advantage
Two villages in two countries reveal the difficulties Roma face in light of a lack of education, a history of discrimination and prejudice.
Life is different for Hungarian Muslims after tens of thousands of migrants passed through the country.
Families in a poor Miskolc neighborhood were evicted after an amendment to a decree on publicly subsidized low-income housing.
After thousands of refugees passed through the region on their way to Europe, the popular route was closed to curb migration.
Hungarian views on refugees, politics and identity are inescapably colored by the nation’s conflicted past.
The number of migrants passing over the Hungarian border has dropped, but the impact of refugees within the country remains.
Roma say that prejudice, ranging from derogatory slurs on the playground to deadly hate crimes, is a fact of daily life.
The Syrian crisis forced the European Union to alter its 30-year-old 'Schengen' policy of passport-free, borderless travel.
A fractured left-wing and struggling far-right Jobbik party pose little threat to Prime Minister Orban's administration.
Migrants who crossed illegally into Hungary face an uncertain future after the deportation process in the country's courts.
In Roma schools and villages, high drop-out rates and a lack of education lead to troubled futures for youth.
Despite a lack of government support, activists in Budapest try to combat drug use and the spread of disease.
A legislative package pending before the Hungarian Parliament would discourage refugees and asylum seekers from staying in Hungary.
The few refugees granted asylum by the Hungarian government often struggle to assimilate and find acceptance in the country.
Some Hungarians embraced incoming migrants, while others were dismayed by being on the frontlines of the movement.
Hungarian Jews grapple with commemorating their heritage and overcoming anti-Semitism they still face in their country.

Tibor is wearing black and his eyes are watery
He is one of the first residents of the “Numbered Streets” neighbourhood in the city of Miskolc in the north east of Hungary
to have received a court order confirming the date he and his family will be evicted
The local authorities are planning to build a football stadium in the area although some believe the real reason behind the evictions is to “clean” the city of Roma who make up 80 per cent of the population of the “Numbered Streets” area
“We used to be part of the city but now they are turning us into ‘unwanted’
into scapegoats,” said one of the activists protesting against the way Miskolc municipality treats the Roma
all the families from ‘Numbered Streets’ will be made homeless,” predicted another activist
Tibor now has little more than a week to find somewhere else for him
his daughter and her three children to live
By 9am on 28 August 2014 they could be made homeless after 25 years living in the neighbourhood
According to residents we have recently spoken to
in the “Numbered Streets” who may soon face the same desperate situation
the municipality initiated eviction proceedings against people who have either incurred housing debts or lacked a formal tenure in the neighbourhood
They are not being given compensation or alternative accommodation
most of those living in “Numbered Streets” have been severely affected by the closure of factories in the town
many struggle to cover basic needs and have started accumulating debts
“I worked in the nearby factory for 30 years
The only type of work that I managed to get since was a temporary job for the municipality (varosgazda),” Tibor explained
“I had to sell many things for her funeral and was left without money left for rent.”
Unemployed and having to support his daughter and her children
Tibor now has rent arrears of around 200,000 Forints (630 Euros)
When he tried to negotiate a re-payment calendar with the municipality
around 80 per cent of families living here either have rent arrears or are at risk of incurring them
Their eviction seems to be only a matter of time
The local authorities and the media refer to the neighbourhood as a “slum”
“Numbered Streets” is made up of several rows of nice albeit poor conditioned
brick built houses that used to home the workers of the factories that surround the area
full of women of various ages keeping an eye on small children playing and riding their little bicycles
The authorities began their attempts to erase the neighbourhood from the map on 8 May 2014 when they adopted an amendment decree to terminate rental agreements
The decree states that those who don’t have housing debts and have a valid contract can receive compensation (approximately 1.5 to 2 million Forints
between 4,800 and 6,300 Euros) if they move out from Miskolc
The majority of residents from “Numbered Streets” are currently at risk of being rendered homeless by the evictions without receiving any compensation
The municipality hasn’t involved the residents in a meaningful consultation
Two weeks ago an elderly disabled women lost her home and on the same day a mother with her three small children were turfed onto the street
She claimed that she paid back her debts and had a verbal agreement with the municipality that her contract would be renewed
The other eviction case involved an elderly woman
As we continued walking through the “Numbered Streets”
Her eviction date was set for 25 September 2014
Mária is non-Roma and lives in a house with her daughter and two young grandchildren
She finds the order unfair as she said she paid off her debtors
Aren’t there enough homeless people already?”
The municipality’s plans are a human rights violation
No-one should be forcibly evicted unless there has been a meaningful consultation
and suitable alternatives have been offered
Amnesty International is calling on the mayor to halt all evictions and to start consultations immediately

Hungarian journalist
Illés Szurovecz asked his readers to imagine living in a settlement where access to clean water is dependent upon you being accepted as a member of a Horticultural Society
Imagine access to clean water being dependent upon those worthy horticulturalists deciding whether or not you are ‘socially acceptable’
And imagine if you’re lucky enough to get water
but someone from the association comes collecting cash.
Hungarian news portal 444.hu has revealed a shocking situation on the outskirts of Miskolc
where Roma in the Lyukóvölgy settlement are systematically denied access to clean water
and the municipal authority simply washed its hands of any responsibility
as if democracy had simply passed by and forgot to stop in this hole in the valley
“The kids come home from school and go down for water with pails and containers
That shouldn't happen in the 21st century!" as many of the houses don’t have tap water residents have to trudge a distance through mud in all seasons to carry water from a public tap.
residents must apply to join a regionally supplied garden cooperative and pay a fee of a few thousand forints a year
The water is not supplied by a public water company
but three associations of metallurgical gardeners and ‘water-using horticulturalists’
to when the Lyukóvölgy was a cottage holiday resort for miners and factory workers
and the associations created their own water network to irrigate their gardens.
this hole in the valley is no rural idyll but home to many poor people
including many who were forced out of the Numbered Streets neighbourhood to make way for the gleaming Diósgyőr football stadium
nowadays the water is needed not for irrigating vegetables but for bathing kids
The article describes an alarming situation where decisions on who gets
depends on the whims of one bitter individual
and has made membership regulations stricter since people in ‘deep need’ have moved in to the area.
She would not divulge to the reporter how many people had been refused membership recently: “It does not matter if it is Gypsies or Hungarians who do not follow the rules
we are not obliged to provide water to them.” She added that "If these individuals learn to live normal lives and not take the garbage to the street and loot everything
the local municipality claimed those residents living in outlying properties are not part of the urban drinking water core network
“were aware that the service provider is not in a contractual relationship with them
Miskolc is no stranger to controversy concerning anti-Roma racism. The authorities and local politicians have been big on mobilising anti-Roma hate for electoral gain. In the 2013 controversy over Roma seeking asylum, then Fidesz mayor Ákos Kriza
told the Canadians that failed claimants could not return to Miskolc
Not only would he do anything to prevent “these criminals from settling in the city”
but would “drive out those criminals currently residing in Miskolc.” He further threatened returning Roma parents that the authorities would take their children away and place them in state institutions
A year and a half later Kriza came up with a plan “for the liquidation of ghettos and slums”, which was Fidesz-speak for pushing the Roma out of town. The infamous decisions concerning the evictions and demolitions of the houses in the Numbered Streets neighbourhood on ‘enhancement of public order’ grounds
and the need to build a parking lot and a football stadium
attracted much negative international media attention
criticism in 2015 from international human rights bodies
and censure from the Hungarian Supreme Court and the Equal Treatment Authority.
And, of course in 2018, there was Viktor Orbán’s incendiary Miskolc hate speech on the campaign trail
Taking his standard swipes at Soros stooges and Muslim migrants
warning the good citizens of Miskolc about ghettos
“There was a time when people from outside migrated en masse into this city
The people of Miskolc experienced what happened then
… Yet those people who moved to Miskolc came from the territory of Hungary
Now you imagine what will happen when people who in their culture
and views are completely different from us arrive from outside of the country.” Orbán knew his audience well
and nobody was in doubt who ‘those people’ were
After Fidesz: what prospects for access to clean water in the hole down in the valley-o
Opposition triumphs in last Sunday’s municipal elections included Miskolc
who defeated Fidesz vowed in his victory speech
to work together with “everyone who represents the interests of the city ..
The opposition forces have promised a politics beyond hate and fear
and there is a need for this city to deal with its history of anti-Roma racism if Veres is to realise his ambition “to build a new
Even more urgent is the need to ensure that all residents have direct access to clean water and sanitation via public authority provision; and that this fundamental right no longer remains a matter left to the discretion of cranky horticultural
metallurgical or gardeners’ associations.
The Roma Civil Monitoring Reports, ERRC field research and FRA surveys reveal shocking disparities and discrimination faced by Roma when it comes to clean water across the EU
Even where safe water supply and sanitation services are available to almost every non-Roma household
many Roma populations cannot access these basic and very essential services.

which he sent from a Hungarian Army forced labor camp to his family in Budapest
His wife Rózsi and their daughter Agnes survived in Budapest
Jenő-Moshe Rosenfeld and his wife Rózsi-Rachel née Roth lived in Miskolc
Jenő worked in a shoe store and Agnes went to the local Jewish school
following the enactment of anti-Jewish legislation by the Hungarian authorities
Jenő and Rózsi moved to Budapest in an effort to find work
Agnes stayed in Miskolc with her maternal grandmother Magda Roth
and in 1942 they both moved to Budapest where they were reunited with Jeno and Rózsi

Rózsi and Agnes were placed in one of the "Yellow Star Houses" designated for Jews in Budapest
Arrow Cross men forced all the residents of their house into the courtyard
and led them on a march lasting several hours to a horse-racing stadium
during which time they had to keep their arms raised and all their jewelry was stolen
Rózsi and Ethel were caught and taken by Arrow Cross men
Agnes and Vera stayed with Grandmother Magda
Rózsi and Ethel returned the following day
Ethel managed to obtain Swiss certificates of protection
and the women entered one of the safe houses in Budapest
Magda moved in with her non-Jewish daughter-in-law
Hungarian policemen arrived at the house and took away everyone's certificates
planning to transfer the residents to the ghetto
One of the residents bribed the policemen
with the result that they were all allowed to remain in the house
the residents were all moved to the ghetto in Budapest
Rózsi was notified that Jenő had fallen into Russian captivity
and had succumbed to typhus while in the Bolcz camp in March 1945
The family members who remained in Miskolc were deported to Auschwitz and murdered
Agnes joined the Maccabi Hatzair movement in Budapest
In 1949 she immigrated to Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine) and married Emil Sperber

The north-eastern Hungarian city targets mainly domestic tourists
The tourism development strategy of Miskolc until 2030 has been completed
according to a local government press release
the document will be submitted to the Municipal Assembly of this city in North-Eastern Hungary for a final brush-up
after which it will serve as a guideline for local developers and players in the sector for the next 10 years.
The strategy’s goal is twofold: on the one hand
the city centre with the historical Avas volcanic hill and Lillafüred (a town in the Bükk Mountains
12 km away from Miskolc but officially a part of it) must be brought to a similar level of development
the four most important tourist attractions of Miskolc are to be showcased under a strong Miskolc brand name
These include Miskolctapolca (a suburb of Miskolc
Miskolc-Lillafüred environmental study trail
and the city centre together with Avas and its wine cellars.
The specific tourism development projects are summarized in the Herman Ottó Tourism Development Program which is part of the strategy. Among the projects underway is one of the most exciting adventure baths in Central Europe taking shape in Miskolctapolca and the small railway development at Šiaurėserdő Zrt
The professionals behind the strategy hope that tourism
which is still a major force in this industrialised city
will be given a further boost through a range of quality experiences
Miskolc has a strong position in the domestic tourism market
with 80 percent of its visitors coming from Hungary and the remaining 20 percent from neighbouring countries
Responding to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and in line with the goals of the strategy

An international research group has designed a new photovoltaic-thermal module configuration that uses zirconium oxide as a cooling agent
The system is reportedly more efficient than water-cooled counterparts in reducing its operating temperature
A view of the experimental setup of the PVT system
The aim of their work was to compare the performance of the system with that of non-cooled PV systems or systems cooled with water under hot climate conditions
“Experiments were conducted in May 2022 on sunny days from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm
with no significant variation in the ambient temperature and solar radiation during the experiment days,” the researchers said
“The maximum ambient temperature was 42.7 C
then gradually lowered until sunset.”
The experimental setting was located in Basra city
It consisted of a PVT module cooled by ZrO2
with all the modules having a nominal power of 50 W
The PVT module uses an absorber copper plate with flow channels attached to the backside
The group also applied a layer of thermal wool on the serpentine tubes to completely cover the PV module’s backside and reduce heat losses
The ZrO2 nanofluid is circulated in the serpentine tubes by two pumps with a mass flow rate of 0.7 L/min set by flow sensors
The scientists applied three different concentrations of ZrO2 of 0.015%
which they said led to temperature reductions of 14%
compared to the reference PV panel without cooling
The operating temperature of the module cooled with water was reduced by 9.7%
