This was long before 'The Next Star' was even on the agenda and before anyone knew the Eurovision would be held in Switzerland If I had told 9-year-old Yuval that she would return to Switzerland as Israel's representative "Nine-year-old Yuval would have said it would have happened much earlier and you're going to sing on massive stages.' Those were the years when I most believed in myself." Scheduling a meeting with Rafael (24) is almost impossible she will fly to Basel to begin rehearsals for Eurovision 2025 which will take place on May 17 and will be broadcast live on Kan 11 "I'm rehearsing around the clock," she shares "I do vocal development four to five times a week sleep with a humidifier that keeps the vocal cords moist throughout the night I also do a lot of treadmill work to condition my body because an accelerated heart rate takes more oxygen – and the entire song depends on oxygen to simulate the situation as much as possible Why do you need so much preparation beyond rehearsing the song "It's like asking a bodybuilder why they need to keep training My entire life revolves around this right now It really feels like a kind of Olympics that I'm preparing for I don't think I've ever invested in or been dedicated to something like I am to Eurovision I wake up with it in the morning and go to sleep with it at night." You still have more than two weeks until the competition "I'm engaged in what I've always dreamed of and also knew I would do for this to be my main occupation that I would work at But remember that my first song in my career is a Eurovision song It's not from zero to a hundred – it's from zero to a million." And that's where my mom enters the picture My mom is the only person who can stabilize me in that moment I know there's a lot of responsibility on me How do you deal with the less pleasant moments "I like and also want to give space to my insecurities I'm not one of those who put on bandages and wave positive psychology around because there's something much deeper here and the moment I give space and time and expression to fear and concerns – I don't walk around carrying that energy outward." Do you reach states of crying during the work process Even before what I went through on October 7 crying was the best tool for me to release I know I'm experiencing a kind of disconnection that isn't healthy I used to seek out crying to release it outward and not keep it inside wanted to encounter it – and couldn't find it I can say that when you can't cry – you're not connecting And these are symptoms I don't want to be in but I want to uproot the problem from its root so it doesn't come to me later in life as post-traumatic stress but it will make me go home and do more rehearsals I sing from a place of opening everything outward and what scares me is not getting anything back you lose confidence and tears flow – what do you do the alternative is to get up and do a rehearsal anything that reconnects me to doing – and then I really reset from it very quickly." What is Eurovision pressure compared to that morning when Rafael went out with her friends to dance at the nature party in the Gaza border region and they found themselves fleeing from the worst massacre in the history of the State of Israel they hid in a small shelter near Kibbutz Be'eri with Rafael lying underneath bodies and pretending to be dead even after she was hit by shrapnel herself She and her friends left there miraculously "I had very difficult hours in the shelter "I'll say something that probably only those who survived Nova will understand and the central one is 'why was I saved and not them?' After I made peace with that "It's something that stayed with me for a very long time The moment I managed to release that feeling What a disrespect that is toward those who didn't survive I came to the conclusion that I need to honor what I received and fly with my life." Rafael has repeatedly told the story of her escape from Nova and the moments of fighting for her life "I remember we arrived at the parking area in Re'im around 1:30 and opened a bar in the trunk and we entered the actual party around 3:30 We set up our 'kanta' (a private area enclosed with embroidered sheets) and went dancing and it was fun to meet people from everywhere I was in the kanta when everything started and two minutes after that the missiles began "I was one of those who wasn't scared of missiles because I had the feeling that if something needs to happen we're definitely not staying here.' We took our things and then I looked at the sky and saw stripes of missiles The plan was to drive to a friend who lived nearby No fewer than 60 Israelis crammed into the small shelter hoping to get out alive – but only a few of them survived I sat next to my friend and next to someone else I didn't know and we'll split up and go home.' But then the first shooting inside the shelter started the first thing I saw was her head on my shoulder who told me to lie down and pretend I was dead The terrorists entered and exited about ten times and it was a nightmare Satan himself couldn't have created I'm the only one in my row in the shelter who survived – everyone else was murdered." There was someone else who was murdered and her body was lying on your leg "The body that was on my leg was my biggest trauma from the whole situation This stayed with me for a long time afterward." and it was one of the most important things I've done in my life and the last thing I expected was to close the circle with her mother because there was a lot of inhumanity in the shelter She told me she hasn't slept well for a year and a half and wanted to know that her daughter didn't suffer She had heard many rumors about her daughter's death Did you know how to give her the details she was looking for I knew to tell her that before her daughter had time to understand what was happening there – she was already no longer alive She didn't see atrocities and didn't suffer I left there feeling like a building had been lifted off my shoulders." It's the only place where my battery gets charged and they will never understand what I went through She entered the party as one Yuval – and left as another Yuval I knew I had to give a chance to every dream I have and everything I would like to fulfill myself in what is the fear of failure compared to the fear of living again?" What would you answer to someone who claims you made it to the competition because of Nova and the emotion I sing from is also related to what I went through I made it to the biggest music show in the country alongside huge singers with incredible voices I went up and competed against them and won I always believed this would be my career and that this is what was going to happen You can see she worked hard and put all her heart there I understood how much she gave her hundred percent because she entered a situation she didn't expect Do you yourself understand the magnitude of the task I don't need to understand all the fears so they don't knock me down but I also tell myself that there are things I have control over and things I don't Everything that's not under my control – there's nothing I can do about it." Are you prepared for encounters with representatives from other countries and that expands even more my desire to open my heart to everyone There will always be those who love us and those who don't But not all of us are used to singing in front of hundreds of millions live across Europe "I think I've had the best preparation for this." Even for people booing while you're singing I think this is the kind of situation that will open my heart even more." it was reported that competition participants created a group and left you out I didn't know about this group until the reports I discovered there were ten countries that weren't there at all So I don't think it was something personal against me or against us." despite everything happening around Israel in the competition there's something in me that truly believes in victory." I don't want to put negative thoughts in your head a scenario where you don't advance from the semi-final "Everyone who knows me knows that I believe in the biggest cliché in the world which is that what needs to happen – happens and it gives me a lot of peace and satisfaction Because even if it means the competition will end in a nightmare – I believe that's what needed to happen I have no belief that something like that will happen because I'm working too hard for it not to happen." The type of therapy I like is digging very deep into the wound and I don't know how appropriate it would be right now to dig into the wound before Eurovision For everything related to Eurovision itself all the things surrounding the competition has dealing with the October 7 events moved aside for now "I've stopped everything in my life that isn't Eurovision right now because I think you can't deal with both things together I also feel that I'm in a good enough place to put it aside for a moment." and after her family returned from Switzerland she studied theater and dance – from there she remembers a traumatic crisis that prevented her from creating for many years "The principal noticed an area of my body that was more developed than the other girls I remember she took me outside and told me I was required to buy new shirts." but she decided I needed shirts with a round when I still hadn't had time to buy new shirts and not moving from here.' Even the shirts I later bought didn't satisfy her she started involving my dad in this whole thing and it became a very big story – until I reached a point where I started wearing oversized men's shirts "There was something in me that wanted to rebel against the principal but she put an idea in my head that wasn't there before I started judging myself much more harshly I would put a sweatshirt over it – even in summer." but we would go on stage six or seven girls and I would be anxious about people looking at me Do you know anyone else who goes on stage and doesn't want to be seen An unpleasant experience as a teenage girl I can say I went through a full-blown trauma It's an anxiety that has remnants in me to this day even though I worked very hard to release that place Rafael served as a border crossing guard in the Jerusalem area and during that time her parents decided to divorce "I grew up knowing that family is the most important thing in the world But I was at a mature enough age to understand that if they weren't good together Was the separation process accompanied by disputes and fights and hid from us what we didn't need to know as children But I was already mature enough to accept it Rafael came to Season 11 of "The Next Star for Eurovision" – and from the first sound she uttered she captivated the judges' panel and the viewers at home she will take the stage with the ballad "New Day Will Rise," written by Keren Peles and will try to advance from the second semi-final What did you think about the song when you heard it for the first time Even if there were ones that vocally could have fit me more beautifully I chose songs that would connect to my soul – and with 'New Day Will Rise' I felt that There's such a strong message here that I want to express and there's a lot of softness – exactly how I want to bring myself to Eurovision." A mission to represent my country and represent my people Have you heard the songs from other countries I had this agenda of 'I'm not listening to songs' – but with Instagram and TikTok it's somewhat inevitable." From what I've had a chance to hear so far 'Espresso Macchiato' from Estonia is an addictive song at incredible levels." Anything that could distract me and that I have no control over – I don't get into and it won't help me to look at what place in the table I'm in at any moment I don't know what place I am in the betting odds." Imagine we were now in 15th place – so what If you were guaranteed fourth place in the competition After recovering from the great disaster in the Gaza border region and amid the busy rehearsals for the huge competition in Europe Rafael also managed to find love – singer Ido Malka whom she met on "The Next Star." "It comes when you least expect it and when your head is completely elsewhere and that's what happened," she candidly shares "We've been together for a bit over two months." You'll have a beautiful story for your grandchildren it's mainly sleeping together and waking up together The rest of the da,y everyone is in their own activities and that there's an understanding of the whole situation It's nice that I have experiences I can call him and share with him." will he watch you from the front row in the hall I have all the desire in the world for him to see me in this situation and to know he's in the audience – but the desire to reach focus and bring the best result is stronger right now." You'll go up to sing while dozens of hostages are still in Gaza "The hostages should have returned home long and it's an issue that's very difficult for me but we also need to remember that this competition has rules – and I respect them fully." An Gorta Mór: Selections from Ireland's Great Hunger Museum presents some of the most important works from the collection of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum formerly housed in Hamden at Quinnipiac University investigates the Irish Famine of 1845-1852 and its impact through art by some of the most eminent Irish and Irish-American artists of the past 170 years which takes its name from the Irish Gaelic phrase for The Great Famine will include 38 works from the collection of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum in a variety of media The works range from Romanticism to post-modernism and were produced by more than 30 Irish and Irish-American artists The earliest work in the exhibition is a small landscape painting by James Arthur O’Connor (Irish 1792-1841) entitled Scene in Connemara from 1828 while the most recent work is a contemporary painting of a potato plant by Robert Ballagh (Irish entitled Irish Mendicants and Galway Family Preparing Food in a Cottage The artworks in the exhibition serve as a reminder of the many ways in which the Famine (1845-1852) affected Ireland in both the short and long term Around 1 million people perished in the Famine Irish-Americans made up 12% of Connecticut’s population Ireland’s own population was 4.4 million barely half of what it had been before the crisis began a half-century earlier The Irish Great Hunger Museum’s Hamden site shut down in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic but soon after Quinnipiac University trustees voted to move the historic collection to Fairfield under the care of the Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield who Quinnipiac has chosen as the future curators of the collection The new iteration of the Museum hopes to open in Fairfield in 2026-27 at 636 Old Post Road in the space currently housing Operation Hope The plan is to renovate the space to display the collection with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems to create an immersive museum The executive director of the Fairfield University Museum “I am so pleased that we could collaborate with our friends and colleagues at the Gaelic-American Club in Fairfield to bring the important artworks in this exhibition out of storage for the community to enjoy while the work is done to create a permanent home for this remarkable collection in downtown Fairfield.” A wonderful selection of programming has been created to complement the exhibition including an opening night talk that will illuminate the historical origins of the Great Hunger presented by Fairfield University Irish Studies Co-Director and Associate Professor of History William Abbott PhD; a lecture on the history of the collection by the founding curator Niamh O’Sullivan Ireland; and a family day focused on the theme of “The Luck of the Irish.” Registration Theater the play “Fires in the Mirror” was one that he was meant to work on The Israeli only moved to the United States a little less than a decade ago he has spent most of his time in New York City he took a job with the theater and began to split his time between Bristol and New York “Fires in the Mirror” recounts the 1991 Crown Heights riots which came after a motorcade that included the Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson crashed and struck two Guyanese children It represents a seminal moment in racial tension between two communities that have lived with and next to each other in Brooklyn for decades is a hip-hop artist who has worked extensively with artists from the other communities involved in the events of 1991 “This production fits my profile pretty well — I’m Israeli and Jewish and at the same time I work in the hip-hop world and I’m familiar with African American and Caribbean culture and music specifically the music of these places and worlds,” he said The play is a unique one and presented an interesting challenge for Mor in which the dialogue is taken directly from interviews conducted by the play’s author of people involved the play in some ways more closely resembles a documentary than anything else This meant that the sound design was different from that of more traditional productions Mor said that the most unique thing about this play is that it does not attempt to lead the viewers to any conclusion It is more or less just a compilation of witness testimonies which allows the audience to see how the events affected different people without being shepherded toward an opinion “The play is really interesting because it doesn’t really tell you what happened,” he said “And I think that is because nobody really knows what happened exactly; there are just different points of view and different sides of the story Mor doesn’t currently belong to a synagogue — he prefers to interact with Judaism in other capacities Working at Bristol Riverside Theater has been enlightening because the directors are Jewish and Jewish values inform much of the work as well as the content there The opportunity to combine his interests in theater “This place was so interesting to me,” he said He added that “Fires in the Mirror” specifically called to him especially considering the state of the world for Jews “I wasn’t familiar with the story of the riots until recently and it kind of resonated with me in a way because this conflict is still kind of felt,” he said Mor said that art that can cross cultural boundaries to speak to different communities is essential The interplay of cultures is something that has always been central to his life not just as an Israeli but also as a hip-hop artist Rap began to play on the radio in Israel when Mor was a teenager and he immediately gravitated to the sound and wordplay of the genre He and his friends started rapping for fun before he eventually formed a band and produced his own hip-hop His rap moniker is “Isaac DaBom,” under which he has released a host of music Mor said that he has had the pleasure of watching Israeli hip-hop through its development and that a wonderful moment came after its mass commercialization in Israel in the early 2000s “It kind of disappeared for a while and went underground and I think that led to it being a more authentic thing in Israel,” he said “We told our own story instead of just trying to be like American hip-hop.” Israeli hip-hop has dozens of subgenres and its own unique appeal Mor said that whether it’s the Middle East-inspired production or social messages on the constantly tenuous state of life in the country hip-hop is huge in Israel just like it is in pretty much any place in the world,” he said “The big step that it took was starting to tell its own story.” After a career of working with people from different backgrounds Mor knows how to listen and understand another point of view he is taking that experience and applying it to the world of theater in Philadelphia I have always loved theater because it’s a medium that’s very unique The power of movement is something that I really like It’s not like watching Netflix; there is energy that’s in the room,” he said [email protected] and website in this browser for the next time I comment Mott Center for Human Growth and Development at the Wayne State University School of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield This partnership has a natural synergy as both museums seek to bring impactful cultural experiences to the community through timeless artworks “We are thrilled to bring this remarkable selection of artworks out of storage and to the greater community demonstrating the significance of storytelling through art to connect individuals and explore different perspectives on pivotal historical experiences,” said Carey Weber,  FUAM's Frank and Clara Meditz Executive Director “We collaborated with Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield in an effort to ensure that the community has access to these meaningful works that naturally prompt reflection and critical dialogue about ongoing social challenges.” The secretary of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield explained how the artworks provide diverse perspectives and interpretations of the historical period allowing for an exceptionally enriching experience for all visitors “Having this exhibition at Fairfield University can help prompt discussion around how the experiences of the famine are relevant to today and why those lessons are important,” she said We are thrilled to bring this remarkable selection of artworks out of storage and to the greater community demonstrating the significance of storytelling through art to connect individuals and explore different perspectives on pivotal historical experiences." The significance and relevance of the artworks presented extend well beyond the famine and demonstrate the lasting global impact of art in telling stories of cultural identity and illuminating social and political issues that are often difficult to grasp through words alone a sculpture or a painting does it more justice,” said Leary “I think art reaches a bigger audience and means more to more people than thousands of books or the lack of words The Fairfield University Art Museum is open to the public and all programs are free. The news of the 20-year-old singer’s departure came during Monday’s episode of the reality competition series, as coach Stefani introduced the contestants for her team’s next round of Knockouts to mentor Sting. He announced the single last week with an Instagram video set to a sample from the song. As her pet 59kg category is a non-Olympic weight class, she decided to fight in the 57kg trials to try and earn her spot in the Indian contingent for the World Wrestling Championships in 2019. That’s when she landed her first big win, beating Pooja Dhandha 2-1 in the 57kg trials’ final. Dhandha was a bronze medallist in the preceding edition. However, her debut World Championships campaign didn’t pan out well and eventually, Anshu Malik made it to the main event. The snub ended her dreams of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but she didn’t let the setback put her down. Sarita Mor went on to win her second straight gold medal at the Asian Championships in Almaty. Then at the 2021 World Championships in Oslo, she bagged her first worlds medal - a bronze in the 59kg category. Sarita missed out on an Asian Games spot after suffering a shock defeat to U23 World Championship bronze medallist Mansi Ahlawat at the continental trials but secured an entry in the women’s 57kg event at the 2023 World Championships after topping the national selection trials. Unfortunately, though, the Indian grappler bowed out in the pre-quarterfinals of the tournament after losing to two-time African champion Odunayo Adekuoroye and consequently, failed to secure a Paris 2024 Olympic quota for India in the division. In February 2024, she went on to lose the National Championships final to Anshu Malik, who eventually went on to obtain the Olympic quota in the women’s 57kg division at the Asian Qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Mor had hoped to challenge Anshu for the spot in the Paris 2024-bound Indian wrestling contingent at the selection trials but her Olympic dream also ended after the trials were cancelled. While the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics remains a far-fetched dream for Sarita Mor, she has informed that she will take a call on her wrestling career only after 2026. For now, Mor finds herself at a crossroads where she has quite a few options to ponder about. Turning pro and competing in MMA remains an option and a step into the entertainment industry is also on the cards. “Sarita is interested in foraying into movies or reality shows. We will wait and choose the best option," Rahul Mann, her husband and coach, told the Indian Express. 🥇","event":null,"destination_url":"","entry_point_tag":"base","entry_point_type":"instory_campaign"}" data-tracking="click" href="https://www.olympics.com/en/sign-in?entry_point_type=instory_campaign&entry_point_tag=base&template=base&origin=https%3A%2F%2Folympics.com%2Fen%2Folympic-channel" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Olympic Membership - Free Live Stream Sports & Original Series - join now The extraordinary Hungarian author Mór Jókai (born as Móricz Jókay of Ásva), also known as the ‘great storyteller of Hungary’, was born exactly 200 years ago today. Already as a boy he was blessed with a fertile imagination and was deeply intrigued by the arts—as a talented illustrator Bowing to his family’s wish the young Jókai did pursue legal studies in Kecsemét and Pest earning a good reputation and readership to him His writing success was swiftly followed by Jókai’s change in career—leaving his legal profession behind he became the editor of Életképek (Pictures of Life) the outbreak of the Revolution of 1848 radically changed both Mór Jókai and Hungary Jókai was heavily involved in the revolutionary events on 15 March 1848 In the Café Pilvax Jókai and Petőfi both took active roles in formulating the Twelve Points the political demands of the radical youth the young author found himself at the centre of the Revolution Róza and Mór did marry within the next couple of months Given the revolutionary environment in 1848, the writer was also encouraged to change his name from Jókay to Jókai. Surnames ending with ‘y’ used to be a sign of noble origin; as such, refusing the aristocratic spelling symbolized the commitment to and enthusiasm for democratic reform Hungary’s glories in battle against the Imperial Austrian Army during the spring of 1849 impacted Jókai’s view of Hungary’s connection to the Habsburgs The once moderate young man strongly supported the decision to abdicate the Austrian royal family which he witnessed as he was present when the Hungarian troops surrendered at Világos in August 1849 Róza Laborfalvi he fled to Pest and was not captured by the Russian army Albeit Jókai was not formally imprisoned by the regime, the vengeful establishment viewed him with distrust. Jókai turned away from politics and dedicated his time to writing. His mission with his books served a societal purpose, however—to preserve and enrich the Hungarian language. As such he is credited with establishing the Hungarian literary language like the Midst the Wild Carpathians (also known as The Golden Age in Transylvania) or the Turkish World in Hungary The romantic depiction and ‘mythologisation’ of Hungary’s history also contributed to strengthening a sense of national identity and belonging in his readership Jókai has the reputation of being ‘the great storyteller of Hungary’, however, it is wrong to assume that his literary success is limited to Hungary. During his lifetime Jókai gained popularity in the English elite too. Avenue North in Escanaba is an independent grocery store known for its homemade food items The store has been locally-owned since it opened in the 1940s and though it no longer belongs to the Independent Grocers Alliance and it’s how many locals refer to the place Casimir “Cash” Milkiewicz held a grand opening for the Sav-Mor Cash Market at 306 Stephenson Ave Cash had graduated from Escanaba High School in 1936 after being on the honor roll and playing violin in the school orchestra He then accumulated 12 years of experience in the grocery business working at the Cashway stores in Rapid River and Gwinn before moving back to Esky to open Sav-Mor according to Daily Press records from the time the name of the grocery had elevated to Sav-Mor Super Market Milkiewicz’s store had joined the Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) and appeared in joint advertisements alongside other IGA stores in Escanaba marketing and other resources to independently-owned grocery stores that pay for membership An article from 1954 detailed the store’s expansion and Cash’s innovations a far cry from the tiny 30×35 building he took over a few years ago,” the article reads “It wasn’t long before the opportunity came to acquire (his mother’s) store property next door and in and out entrances were set at advantageous positions A store of that kind was new in that part of the city…” Cash was also quoting as saying that advertising was a successful method to growing the business The Milkiewicz family — Casimir and his wife and four sons — lived in quarters above the store got involved with the business when he was older two Sav-Mors were in operation in the area: there was the one at 306 Stephenson and also Dave’s Sav-Mor IGA which was in Danforth “next to the Hilltop Drive-In Theater,” as a 1985 advertisement read Rick and Patty Kobasic bought the Stephenson store from Dave Milkiewicz While Sav-Mor had long had a history of fresh food in addition to packaged products on the shelves the Kobasics added some recipes that are still beloved by regular customers “They had their meat pies that they were famous for Same with their pasties — Angeline’s meat pies and pasties,” said Chris Carter who purchased the grocery from the Kobasics in 2018 “Most of the sausages that we do in-house in the meat department that’s all their family’s recipes as well,” Carter said “I’ve added a few different sausages but the staple ones — like the brats Italian pork sausage and stuff like that — they sold a lot of it He remarked that the business plan and the existing recipes had been excellent and there was little need for great changes Carter said he wants to keep the strong traditions going but maybe “just add a little bit of a twist.” They’ve modernized and revamped a few things Carter added a beer cave and has expanded the product lines in certain areas He noted that he’s already seen some trends rise and fall; for example a style of beer) were very popular a few years ago and while Sav-Mor still carries and sells a lot of craft brews ready-to-drink canned cocktails have become more popular recently Non-alcoholic brews have also gained traction In addition to a few new sausages and other fresh meat and deli recipes Carter’s own family recipe has entered the store was owned and operated by Carter’s step-grandfather and it’s an option for customers ordering custom cuts from the meat department Something that sets Sav-Mor apart from other groceries is the made-from-scratch salads which was in response to a recognized demand for healthier options — a general trend in recent years Carter said that he regularly brings in new items listens to customers and often obliges their requests for certain products Lunch is the most popular time of day at Sav-Mor as many customers visit for both hot and cold meal options offering patrons discounted meals that include a hot dish breakfasts and side dishes are also sold daily. The store also provides catering for events Sav-Mor’s IGA membership was discontinued after the previous wholesale grocery supplier the store had used — which provided a lot of IGA products — went out of business “The new company that I went with had said they were going to get a bunch of IGA stuff because they had taken over a lot of these IGA stores … and they just never took on hardly any products,” Carter explained “So I ended up paying fees for product I couldn’t really get.” and many people still know the store at 306 Stephenson as IGA but it would be properly referred to as just Sav-Mor ESCANABA — At least three vessels
