The Nyíregyháza Zoo has announced the birth of twin Sumatran tiger cubs (Panthera tigris sumatrae), one of the rarest tiger subspecies in the world. This achievement is the result of ten years of careful planning and collaboration across European zoos, according to the zoo’s director, László Gajdos.
Since 2015 the zoo has worked tirelessly to find the ideal breeding pair, bringing female tigers from multiple European zoos to join its resident male. Despite previous setbacks, including miscarriages and stillbirths, a breakthrough occurred with the pairing of Gio, a 13-year-old male, and Sabah, a four-year-old female. Their union has produced two healthy male cubs, marking a critical step in conserving this endangered species.
At four weeks old the cubs underwent their first veterinary examination following a quarantine period. The zoo’s veterinary team assessed their overall health, implanted identification chips, and administered vaccinations and deworming treatments. The cubs weighed 5 kg and 4.6 kg, respectively, during the check-up, indicating robust health.
The Sumatran tiger is not only the rarest tiger subspecies but also one of the most endangered animals on Earth. While wild populations of giant pandas are estimated at 2,000 to 3,000 individuals, fewer than 500 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild. This species, the smallest of the six living tiger subspecies, inhabits lowland and mountainous forests on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Decades of habitat destruction and poaching have driven Sumatran tigers to the brink of extinction. Their wild population, estimated at around 1,000 individuals in the 1970s, dwindled to approximately 250 by 1996, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Today 280 Sumatran tigers live in zoos worldwide, including four at the Nyíregyháza Zoo.
Starting this weekend, visitors to the Nyíregyháza Zoo will have the opportunity to see the tiger cubs at the Viktória House, a facility dedicated to showcasing endangered species. This conservation success story highlights the zoo’s commitment to protecting critically endangered wildlife and ensuring the survival of species on the edge of extinction.
The birth of these tiger cubs is a significant achievement in global conservation efforts, offering a glimmer of hope for the survival of the Sumatran tiger. The Nyíregyháza Zoo’s work demonstrates the vital role that breeding programmes play in preserving endangered species for future generations.

Our defending champion men's football team hosted Nyíregyháza in the 28th round of the OTP Bank Liga. Before and during the match, our fans could watch the current broadcast of our exclusive show, the Fradi Zóna vodcast, with our guests László Szokolai, Zoltán Jovánczai, Ádám Varga and Somália on FradiMédia's official Youtube channel.
In the match, Robbie Keane voted for the starting line-up of Dibusz - Makreckis, Gartenmann, Cissé, Szalai, Civic - Abu Fani, Maiga, Tóth - Pesics, Saldanha.
The first kick was taken by the home side, and the first chance came in the second minute, when Makreckis' cross was headed into the visitors' goal by Pesics, but Balázs Tóth was able to save. Seconds later, Alex Tóth's centre was fouled by the visitors' defenders and Pesics, who was left empty, headed into the Nyíregyháza goal (1-0).
After the goal, our team dictated the tempo, in the 18th minute Saldanha was in position, our Brazilian striker scored the goal, but the assistant waved offside. However, after a lengthy review, the video referee overturned the decision and our team took a two-goal lead (2-0).
In the 33rd minute, Pesic had the chance to take a free kick, but Tóth saved. Two minutes later, Saldanha broke down the right flank, trickled his way into the box and crossed to Pesics, who made a spectacular move to put the ball into the net with his heel (3-0). Two minutes before the break, Alex Tóth got the ball and passed to Maiga, who set Makreckis on the pace and our full-back broke on goal, but the Nyíregyháza defenders saved in the last minute.
After the turnaround, we didn't have to wait long for another goal, in the 53rd minute Alex Tóth's cross from the left was met by Saldanha, who converted the situation and scored a double (4-0). Three minutes later, our team made a substitution, with Barnabas Varga replacing Pesic, who scored twice, and Júlio Romao replacing Maiga. In the 57th minute, Eppel challenged Dibusz from distance, but our team captain managed to save.
In the 58th minute, Alex Tóth received a good ball in front of the visitors' goal and finished into the Nyiregyhaza goal, scoring two assists and scoring the first goal of the first team (5-0) today. Four minutes later, our young midfielder left the pitch and was replaced by Ben Romdhane, while Saldanha was replaced by Joseph.
In the 71st minute Abu Fani came off the pitch, replaced by debutant Adam Madarász. Ten minutes later, our team scored their sixth goal, Joseph headed into Tóth's goal from Civic's cross to give Ferencváros their sixth goal (6-0). In the 85th minute, our French international unselfishly served Varga Barnabás to put our national team striker in position, who did not miss his chance (7-0).

Péter Szijjártó emphasized the importance of the Hungarian peace strategy as an opportunity for peace negotiations in the Russo–Ukrainian war in a lecture in Nyíregyháza
a north-eastern Hungarian city located close to the border with Ukraine
Last Friday Hungarian Minister of Trade and Foreign Affairs Szijjártó Péter gave a lecture at the University of Nyíregyháza about Hungary’s foreign policy strategy, centred around three main aspects: peace, national sovereignty, and economic neutrality.
At the beginning of his presentation Péter Szijjártó reminded that Hungary’s and the nation’s borders do not coincide, and the Hungarian government considers the situation of Hungarians beyond its borders to be a highly important issue.
Péter Szijjártó described the current period as the ‘age of dangers,’ which will be referred to as prominent in the history books of future generations. The minister recalled the crises of recent years, highlighting the Covid pandemic, which had significant effects on the global healthcare system, continuing with the difficulties of the war raging in Hungary’s neighbourhood.
‘The real question now is how to end the war’
In the context of the war in Ukraine, he stated that ‘the real question now is how to end the war’, a war that started more than a thousand days ago. According to him, the most critical question in the conflict are ‘How can we achieve peace? What is the shortest, fastest path to peace?’
According to the minister the goal regarding the war in Ukraine should be a peace strategy to have a ceasefire as soon as possible. ‘The West seems willing to fight until the last Ukrainian youth with the possibility of lowering the conscription age’, he stressed, adding that this approach puts the Ukrainian nations’ future at risk.
He stated that Hungary is committed to peace and keeps its diplomatic and communication channels open so that possible misunderstandings cannot cause a global tragedy.
Related to the other pillar of the Hungarian foreign strategy, national sovereignty, Szijjártó stated that a pro-migration establishment in Brussels is dangerous for Europe and human lives. As opposed to the EU’s current approach, economic neutrality is the third pillar of Hungary’s strategy; the minister underscored that Hungary cannot live in a world divided into blocs. ‘We are working to develop civilized cooperation between East and West,’ he highlighted.
‘A world divided into blocs is not beneficial for Hungary’
‘We are a country that creates opportunities for the safe cooperation of Eastern and Western economic interests. This is especially important today when world politics has again shifted in a direction that aims to form global blocs. A world divided into blocs is not beneficial for Hungary—in fact, it is clearly contrary to our national interests,’ Szijjártó nailed down.
He concluded his lecture reiterating that peace, national sovereignty, and economic neutrality are the three objectives that determine Hungarian foreign policy today.
Predicted lineups are available for the match a few days in advance while the actual lineup will be available about an hour ahead of the match.

The following is an article written by Orsolya Ferenczi-Bónis
Kiszehajtás’ (when girls dressed up a straw man in women’s clothes
carried it around the village and then threw it into water or burned it)
‘villőzés’ (when small groups of girls carried around decorated branches or trees called ‘villő’)
Easter perambulation (walking the borders)
and so on—in addition to egg-painting and sprinkling water
there are many folk customs and traditions associated with Easter that we have collected in our article
Easter is the most solemn celebration in the Christian world, commemorating the redemptive death on the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Judaism, Passover is celebrated at this time of the year
to escape’—is a reminder of the deliverance from Egyptian bondage
with Jesus and his disciples having the Last Supper on the eve of Passover
placing Christian Easter on the Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox
The spring equinox was a time of celebration of spring
and rebirth that goes back to ancient times
The word Easter in many European languages
The Hungarian word ‘húsvét’ refers to the resumption of eating meat after forty days of fasting (with ‘hús’ meaning ‘meat’
and also refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Holy Communion at Easter
Palm Sunday is the last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week
the Holy Mass on Palm Sunday begins with a procession to remember how Jesus was greeted by the celebrating crowds as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey
broken from the trees and placed in front of his path
Our ancestors gathered catkin on the Saturday before Palm Sunday
and after Mass they took the sacred branches home
believing they had special powers to prevent disease and protect against lightning
Another traditional Palm Sunday custom was the process of ‘kiszehajtás’: a straw doll dressed in women’s clothes
was carried around the village and then thrown into water or burnt
during which willow branches were decorated and carried around the houses
Our ancestors dedicated Holy Week to cleaning and tidying up their surroundings
Not only did they tidy up their own gardens
but they also cleaned up communal areas and tools such as ditches and wells
so they stopped ringing only to be rung again on Holy Saturday
the ringing of clappers served as a warning of the services and also as a revival of the old noisy
was not only a day of strict fasting but also a day of a ban on work and weather forecasts
the lighting of a new fire symbolizes the resurrection of Christ from the rock tomb
is the feast of the resurrection of Jesus Christ
Easter Sunday is linked to the custom of consecrating food
It was believed that the crumbs of the consecrated food would protect livestock and stimulate crops
so they were later given to the animals or spread on the fields
Folk traditions were also born from the Easter mystery plays: the Easter perambulation
was a way of carrying around the news of Jesus’ resurrection
People went across the fields so that nature might also share in the Lord’s victory
the whole community went around the crosses of the village
and then they went in procession to the cemetery
where they prayed at the graves of their loved ones until dawn
Another custom associated with the Easter holidays was ‘mátkálás’ (with ‘mátka’ meaning ‘bride’)
where two girls pledged eternal friendship
and ‘komálás’ (with ‘koma’ meaning ‘brother-in-law’)
It was also customary to send a gift basket
which was used to seal the adoption of the new kin
The most characteristic Easter tradition on Easter Monday is sprinkling water
based on the belief in the purifying and fertility-enhancing power of water
sprinklers were offered food and drink and presented with red or decorated Easter eggs
The Easter egg was originally dyed only red
a colour reminiscent of the blood of Christ shed for humanity
natural materials were used to dye the eggs
The simplest way of painting was to cover the surface of the egg with a leaf and place it in a paste of onion or walnut shells
which naturally dyed the exposed surface of the egg
leaving the area of the covered surface clear and giving the shape of the leaf with a wavy edge
Waxing and scratching were also used to create shapes on the eggs
it served as a traditional gift from godparents to their godchildren
but it was also customary for the husband to cut the consecrated egg in two and eat one half for himself and the other half for his wife—ensuring that the two of them would always find the right path together

thanks to the cooperation with the Romanian government
an expressway will connect Nyíregyháza and Szatmárnémeti (Satu Mare)
Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár said at a press conference at the site of the ongoing construction of the M49 expressway on Wednesday
János Lázár announced near Nyírmeggyes in Szabolcs–Szatmár–Bereg County that the construction of the first
28-kilometre-long segment of the expressway being built in two phases between the M3 motorway and the Hungarian–Romanian border has begun with an investment of approximately 175 billion forints by Duna Aszfalt
Another 17.5-kilometre segment of the expressway will be built at the cost of 150–160 billion forints
adding that this will remove the obstacles that have so far hindered economic and social cooperation between the two regions
The minister recalled that in Hungary about 900 kilometres of a motorway–expressway network have been built since 2010
in the value of approximately 3,2 trillion forints
Last summer the government reallocated resources to serve ‘strategic objectives,’ he added
to leverage Hungary’s role as a ‘borderland,’ a bridge between two worlds
it is crucial to connect the various regions of the Carpathian Basin
He mentioned that the largest motorway investment realised in recent years in Hungary was the construction of the Kassa (Košice)–Miskolc expressway
The government aims to continue this programme by connecting Nyíregyháza and Satu Mare
The construction of the M6 motorway up to the national border and the upgrading of Route 6 to an expressway towards Szigetvár are also part of these plans
‘We also want Győr to be connected to Dunaszerdahely (Dunajská Streda in Slovakia) by a motorway; we have at least a dozen programmes that aim to connect towns located close to each other in the Hungarian countryside through a network of high-speed roads,’ the minister stated
He emphasised that the investment in the M49 is important to establish a new economic zone similar to that around Győr
in the Nyíregyháza–Debrecen–Miskolc triangle
This will make it easier for workers to reach their workplaces
The construction of the M49 is at five per cent completion
with the deadline for the first segment being autumn 2026 and for the second segment December 2026
Lázár remarked that discussions within the government are also ongoing about extending the M3 motorway to the Hungarian–Ukrainian border by building the M34 expressway to Záhony
When asked about Romania’s Schengen membership
the minister stated that the Hungarian government explicitly supports Romania being allowed into the Schengen Area
and will work during Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency next year to make this happen as soon as possible
Szatmárnémeti Mayor and member of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) Gábor Kereskényi highlighted the significance of the construction of the M49
He mentioned that the feasibility study for the 14-kilometre section connecting the border and the ring road of Szatmárnémeti on the Romanian side has been completed
The compulsory archaeological excavations have been completed
Fidesz parliamentary representative of the Mátészalka electoral district Sándor Kovács spoke about how the highway will bring those on both sides of the border closer in terms of employment and infrastructure

the Chinese battery cell manufacturer Sunwoda plans to build a factory for electric vehicle batteries in Hungary
According to the company’s stock exchange announcement
Sunwoda plans to invest the equivalent of around 250 million euros in the plant
The Hungarian investment promotion agency HIPA has confirmed the location of the Sunwoda plant in Hungary
revealing the factory will be built in Nyíregyháza in northeastern Hungary
The plant should be operational by the end of 2025
Nothing has been made public about the planned production capacity as yet
but a report from the Chinese publication cnevpost revealed Sundwoda will raise about one-third of the sum from its own funds
The rounded sum of 660 million yuan or 84 million euros is mentioned
while 1.3 billion yuan (166 million euros) are to be covered by a bank loan
These sums include the purchase of the land
the construction and the procurement of the equipment
the details of intended customers for battery cells from the Hungary plant have not been revealed
with Sunwoda merely saying it wants to better serve international customers and expand its foreign business
Sunwoda’s activities in Europe are expected to help increase the company’s global market share and are “important for promoting the company’s long-term stable development,” according the company’s stock exchange statement
Electric vehicle industry players from other countries are also investing in Hungary. BMW is building its first electric car plant for its New Class vehicles, including battery assembly
South Korean battery material manufacturer EcoPro BM started building a factory in Debrecen at the end of April
Mercedes and Audi have had vehicle or component plants in Hungary for some time; Mercedes already builds the EQB there
Audi the e-motors for the Q8 e-tron built in Brussels
the powertrains for the PPE electric cars and the MEB small cars built in Spain
Sundwoda is one of the lesser-known battery companies in Europe, but in China, Dacia relies on Sunwoda cells in the Spring electric car built there
Sunwoda customers include VW’s new partners Xpeng

Although there was no violence or gunfight in Nyíregyháza in 1956
two local revolutionary leaders were executed in retaliation
The fact that the vigilantes in Nyíregyháza have been curbed is mainly thanks to László Szilágyi
He was a bright boy born in a farming family in 1924
His parents enrolled him at the Kossuth Lajos Lutheran High School in Nyíregyháza
but the war prevented him from completing his studies
he fled from the Soviet troops on his bicycle to the West but was captured by the Arrow Cross and transported to Komárom
he became an official at the Hungarian Investment Bank in the early 1950s
as both his and his wife’s father was declared a kulak (i.e.: a prosperous peasant who owned land and could hire workers thus pursued by the Soviet regime) consequently László was dismissed from the bank
Szilágyi was transferred to the Tiszamente Waterworks Construction Company at the end of 1951 but had to leave that position as well
He was able to find a job at the County Electricity Company
where he worked initially as a laborer and later as a design foreman
but later he joined a demonstration in the town
which was led by a group of miners and workers from Miskolc
Szilágyi soon found himself in the thick of the action:
reached the printing press and managed to get 10,000 copies of the demands of the workers from Miskolc
and then sent a telegram to Imre Nagy containing the support and their demands
the provisional workers' council's steering committee was formed
he tried to establish good relations with the local state and party organizations
but it soon became clear that no meaningful cooperation was possible
The first secretary of the county party committee told the party center in an intercepted telephone conversation that "a drunken gang had taken power in Nyíregyháza and were going to massacre the people"
the final Nyíregyháza city workers' council and the county revolutionary national committee were formed
organised public services and ensured that wages were paid
He set up a national guard to prevent vigilantism
He was driven by a desire to control tempers when
he ordered the detention of the former head of the county party and the party secretary
He had similar considerations in mind when
at the meeting of the National Committee on 3 November
he proposed a clear message from the commander of the Soviet troops surrounding Nyíregyháza (they will not open fire
there will be a retaliatory strike): make "a decision that the radio and the loudspeaker [...] will announce every ten minutes what we have discussed with the Soviet command [...] so that the people should not do anything for their own good
The Soviets were informed in writing that they would convict any person who
several former communist party leaders returned to power with the Soviet troops
the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Committee
the former county council president praised his work with the following words "I have no grudge against comrade Szilágyi
and I will work with him." In spite of all this
the Soviets arrested Szilágyi that very night and took him to Ungvár
The Hungarian authorities have proved less permissive
he was arrested and tried in a military trial
the investigating officers used excessive physical violence against him
Szilágyi asked for his testimonies to be considered null and void.
he asked in vain for his sentence to be imposed so that he could return to his family: he was found guilty and sentenced to death for the crime of initiating a conspiracy to overthrow the people's democratic state and two counts of violating personal freedom
The most severe sentence was imposed despite the fact that there had been no deaths nor even serious atrocities in Nyíregyháza during the revolution
This also caused serious problems for the new county leadership
the future first secretary of the county party committee and later Minister of the Interior
it is very difficult to work on agitation [...] because "nobody was hanged here
nobody was killed" - so the workers say in the villages [...] it is very difficult for honest workers to explain that it was a counter-revolution..."
the specific logic of the Kádár machinery of retaliation meant that the "criminal wavering" of the county could not go unpunished
He was executed on the morning of 6 May in the courtyard of the Nyíregyháza County Prison
He was buried in an unmarked grave in the back of the Northern Cemetery in Nyíregyháza
The letter was destroyed by the commander of Nyíregyháza Prison
because it contained "opinions that were in part unacceptable [sic!]"
The widow kept the fate of the head of the family a secret from the children for a long time
learned from one of her schoolmates that her father's death was not due to illness
Many 'friends' turned away from the family during these years
while they also found it difficult to make a living
there was always a 'well-wisher' who reminded the employer of the husband's identity
so that the elderly grandparents had to go to work
told her she should be glad she was tolerated at all in the institution
András Tomasovszky was born on 22 December 1923 in Almaty
was a Russian prisoner of war in the First World War
who -despite being married in Hungary- married a young local woman and had three children
but as the father had not divorced his former wife
the Kazakh mother soon returned to the Soviet Union with her two children
little András stayed in Hungary because his father grabbed him off the train at the last moment
András Tomasovszky worked on the family’s farm
Tomasovsky was twice sentenced to six months in prison for endangering the public interest: first for unauthorized felling of trees
and then for failing to eradicate the Fall webworms’ caterpillars in his orchard
his land was expropriated and a large family
and the family of an AVO (communist secret police) officer was moved into his house
It was only through the goodwill of the former that the original owners were allowed to stay in the hall of their house
András Tomasovszky and his family were living in the shed of their house for a while
Tomasovszky learned to be an electrician with his father and worked on the electrification of farms for the county electric company
he was employed as an electrician at the Nyíregyháza Dairy Company and then worked for the County Construction Company in the same position
The year 1956 brought major changes in his life
not only because of his new job but also because his wife died in July after a long illness
the day of the great demonstration in Nyíregyháza
during which Tomasovszky gradually moved from being a passive bystander to an active participant in the events
Following the demolition of the Soviet heroic monument erected at the request of Marshal Malinovsky in 1945
he read out the demands of the people from Miskolc who had arrived in the city in the morning and played a primary role in catalyzing the events
which were adopted with minor changes and printed in 10000 copies at the local printing press. Tomasovszky took a leading role in the printing action
and later became the head of the committee that achieved the changeover of the army at Damjanich barracks
he was elected a member of the five-man body set up as a temporary revolutionary leadership body
He was present when the demonstrators freed the prisoners from the prison
and in the late afternoon he tried to persuade the people demanding weapons at the barracks to see reason
The crowd was dispersed by the military opening fire
the county national revolutionary committee was formed to formalise the actual power relations
Tomasovszky became a member of the narrowly-constituted Steering Committee
and President László Szilágyi put him in charge of the intelligence group
Its members were in constant phone contact with the villages on the Hungarian-Soviet border
informing them of the movements of Soviet troops
it was passed on to the revolutionary committees in the capital and the provinces
several people urged Tomasovsky to leave the country
the Nyíregyháza District Court sentenced him to three months imprisonment for concealing weapons
On 23 April he was arrested again and tried as a third defendant in the trial of László Szilágyi and his associates
Although the family status of several of the defendants in the trial was considered a mitigating circumstance
Tomasovszky asked in vain for a sentence that his three children "should not be completely orphaned"
The military court did not take paternity into account for him or for Szilágyi
Tomasovsky was found guilty of the crime of initiating a conspiracy to overthrow the people's democratic state and sentenced to death
presented the events in Nyíregyháza as part of a country-wide "counter-revolutionary" action plan
(It is characteristic that in the publication Tomasovszky was referred to
as "the adventurer son of the kulak commissioner"). On this basis
the verdict is full of unfounded allegations aimed at smearing the revolutionary leaders
such as that "all their actions were aimed at restoring the capitalist
In his last speech at the appeal hearing on April 28
Tomasovszky drew the court's attention to a serious procedural "omission" ("I could have proved my case with witnesses
but this was not enough to get the Supreme Court to reduce his sentence
His execution took place on 6 May in the courtyard of Nyíregyháza County Prison
His father was dismissed from his job after the revolution was crushed
he worked to support his wife and granddaughter Mária
Mária Tomasovszky recalls that after the execution
Her father was not mentioned at all in the family until the change of regime
because of the fear that was ingrained in them
“I lived through [my father] standing up under the gallows a hundred times
[...] it was a very rare night when I didn't fall asleep crying." Even though she passed the entrance exam
she was not admitted to the agricultural high school after the head of the institution was "informed” by the “authorities”
Although she had completed a course in shorthand and typing
she was only offered a job as a cleaner in a ceramics factory
where she was constantly humiliated because of her family's past
The constant mental ordeal was only somewhat alleviated when a job offer took her to the capital
where she knew no one but her host relatives
The remains of Tomasovszky and Szilágyi were recovered at the dawn of the regime change
the two martyrs were given a dignified burial
The death sentences were declared null and void by the military court in Debrecen in February 1990
In 1991 they were both made honorary citizens of the city and in the same year
a memorial burial place was established for them in the Northern Cemetery

Five Romani families were forced to leave their apartments on Tuesday morning (October 6)
marking a definitive end to the moratorium on evictions during the pandemic
The eviction of five Romani families in the northeastern town of Nyíregyháza
which has left a total of 17 people homeless
was challenged by dozens of protestors.
Vice-president of the local Roma minority self-government
criticized the municipality for its failure to engage in constructive dialogue on debt repayment
and described putting families with young children out on the streets during a pandemic as ‘outrageous’
News portal 24.hu reported that according to the local police
a total of four flats were ordered to be evacuated by the enforcement office
which acted on the basis of a decision of the Nyíregyháza District Court
In a written response to 24.hu concerning the eviction
an executor will try to force the forced eviction in the case of 4 dwellings on the basis of a final court decision
given that the average debt per household is 1.2 million HUF (3,339 EUR)
which has accumulated over several years.”
As reported by Merce.hu, the housing action group A Város Mindenkié AVM (The City for Everyone) had called for a postponement of the evictions on the grounds of both legality and basic humanity
The group described the execution of this order
which affects five children and adults with long-term illnesses or severe disability
as completely unacceptable for two reasons: first
because local governments are legally duty-bound according to the Local Governments Act "to ensure the prevention of homelessness"; and second
and all expressed a willingness to make arrangements to clear their debts.
AVM also learned that the municipality is planning further evictions at the Huszár settlement later this month; such action would make at least eight children
the ERRC stated that “Forced evictions without full informed consultation and without offer of adequate alternative accommodation are a violation of national and international law”; further
evicting families from their apartments has potentially life-threatening consequences
Leilani Farha, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing put it more bluntly: “In the face of this pandemic
being evicted from your home is a potential death sentence”
She declared that the right to adequate housing is not subject to derogation in times of emergency
Limitations to this right are permissible “solely for the purpose of promoting the general welfare in a democratic society.” In the ‘sick democracy’ that is Hungary
it is unclear how forced evictions of Roma could conceivably serve the purpose of promoting general welfare

Thick-skinned and prone to bursts of anger … and now adopted by the Hungarian prime minister
Viktor Orbán posted a video on Facebook on Friday announcing that he had adopted a rhinoceros
and wants the public’s help in choosing a name for it
“I have received a special request from the zoo at Nyíregyháza to adopt a rhinoceros,” Orbán said
but adoption goes hand in hand with being a godfather so we have to give him a name now.”
“I gathered a couple of options close to my heart
This time we don’t need a two-thirds majority,” he added
apparently referring to the votes he needs in parliament to change the constitution
So far 3,500 people have cast a ballot and the vote stays open until Monday
According to its website, the zoo at Nyíregyháza is home to the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) and the southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum)
Orbán (Brusselus irritatii) has been prime minister of Hungary since 2010
