Mar 12, 2025Building a strong chest isn’t just about your lower and mid-pecs—it’s the upper pecs that make all the difference. In a new YouTube video
exercise scientist Mike Israetel shares his expert tips on using incline angles to build your upper chest like a pro
is a leading voice in strength training and hypertrophy
he’s one of the Men's Fitness team’s go-to sources for muscle-building advice
regularly sharing his insights on social media
Israetel points out several key principles to focus on
with incline angles being one of the most important
a lot of guys get caught up on finding the "perfect" incline angle
Israetel insists that incline and upper pec work exists on a spectrum of flat pressing
all the way up to high incline pressing around 60 degrees.
Flat bench and dumbbell presses are great for building size
but they tend to target the mid and lower pecs more
which causes the upper pecs to stand out less
If you want to grow your upper pecs just as much
implementing incline work is the way to go
But don’t get too hung up on the exact angle—a lot of guys overthink this
It's better to try out a combination of different incline angles in any given week to see what your body responds best to.
and you can never quite tell how your own personal physiology and anatomy will respond unless you try multiple different angles," he says.
Bottom line: Adding any type of incline work to your chest routine will help build that upper pec shelf
there’s no one-size-fits-all incline
and it'll require personal trial-and-error
have some variation—as long as you're feeling your upper pecs get sore the day after
you're good to go," Israetel says.

we’ve picked out a few of the brightest stars the Galaxy have to offer ahead of MNUFC’s Conference Semifinal match against LA
and we turned all our research into a couple of handy scouting reports
let’s get to know the next name on the list:
Following a breakout season for the winger in 2023 with top-flight Brazilian side Vasco da Gama
Pec joined LA Galaxy in January 2024 after signing a DP contract with the club that runs through 2028
The Brazilian international made an immediate impact for his new club
as the young star would help LA form a revamped attack alongside fellow winter DP signing Joseph Paintsil
LA’s attacking third would propel the club back into the playoffs after falling short of the postseason in 2023
Pec and his attacking cohorts would finish the season with a Western Conference-leading 69 goals on the year
Pec would also be recognized for his individual play in his debut season for the Galaxy
with the winger being selected to the 2024 MLS All-Star team
The Brazilian’s impact on LA’s much improved attack was evident throughout the season
with Pec ending the regular season as the club’s leading scorer in 2024
Major League Soccer awarded Pec as the 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year
beating out international star and MLS newbie Luiz Suárez of Inter Miami
Pec is just the second member of the LA Galaxy to earn the award
joining international enigma Zlatan Ibrahimović
who earned the award in his MLS debut season in 2018
To say that Pec will be a point of focus for the Loons in the Western Conference semifinal would be an understatement
Particularly with playmaker and passing savant Riqui Puig in the middle
Loons defenders will have to cut off any avenues in the goal box to prevent Pec from finding enough space to score
His endurance and pace make him somebody that will challenge MNUFC for a full 90 minutes
Pec can be prone to mistakes when dribbling in possession
Causing those missteps will be crucial for the Loons if they hope to get the victory over this revamped version of the Galaxy
But don't just take my word for it—check out some of Pec's best moments this season to get a taste of what the Loons are coming up against:
2024) – Major League Soccer today announced that LA Galaxy forward Gabriel Pec has been named the 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year

Pec has totaled 36 goal contributions (19 goals
17 assists) in 38 matches played (35 starts) across all competitions during the 2024 campaign.Through two matches played during the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs
Pec’s award marks the second time in club history that an LA Galaxy player has been named the MLS Newcomer of the Year
with Zlatan Ibrahimovic last winning the award back in 2018
Pec was one of four LA Galaxy players during the 2024 campaign to record at least 10 goals
which is the first time in MLS history that a single team had four players achieve that feat
who earned Player of the Matchday presented by Michelob Ultra honors after recording a goal and two assists against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Matchday 34
2024 after the club acquired him from Vasco da Gama as a Young Designated Player and signed the forward to a five-year-contract through the end of the 2028 MLS season
The Newcomer of the Year award was voted on by MLS club technical staff

Dec 26, 2024Want bigger pecs? Train accordingly. A recent study published in the Journal of Sport Sciences found a strong correlation between measured pec muscle thickness and bench press one-rep max.
Researchers sought to create equations to predict how much weight 83 different resistance-trained men could lift in a single repetition of the bench press. This was based on their muscle thickness and basic body measurements.
participants were tested for their one-repetition maximum bench press strength on a Smith machine
they performed bench throws on the Smith machine with several different load ranges.
Barbell positions were measured by a linear position transducer while bench throw power was calculated using a dynamic equation.
Participants' average bench press one-rep max was 250 pounds at an average bodyweight of 183 pounds
the study found that two methods can help predict how much weight someone can lift in a bench press
One method is based on chest muscle thickness
and the other combines both chest muscle thickness and body weight
Together, they could be useful tools for measuring strength.
the study's findings suggest that it may be possible to predict a person's maximum strength without needing to test how much they can actually lift
Ritcher also says that if you want to be a strong bench presser
you're probably going to need a big rack—so
focus on improving your bench press strength.
Progressive overload is key to muscular growth
By consistently challenging your muscles with heavier weights
making your muscle fibers thicker and stronger.
The bench press is a compound lift that recruits several upper body muscles
making it a crucial lift for developing bigger pecs
Pectoralis nerve blocks (PECS) have been shown in numerous studies to be a safe and effective method to treat postoperative pain and reduce postoperative opioid consumption after breast surgery. However, there are few publications evaluating the PECS block effectiveness in conjunction with multimodal analgesia (MMA) in outpatient breast surgery. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the efficacy of PECS's blocks on perioperative pain management and opioid consumption.
PECS block combined with MMA may not reduce intraoperative and/or PACU opioid consumption in patients undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery.

Background: Pectoralis nerve blocks (PECS) have been shown in numerous studies to be a safe and effective method to treat postoperative pain and reduce postoperative opioid consumption after breast surgery
there are few publications evaluating the PECS block effectiveness in conjunction with multimodal analgesia (MMA) in outpatient breast surgery
This retrospective study aims to evaluate the efficacy of PECS's blocks on perioperative pain management and opioid consumption
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to assess the efficacy of preoperative PECS block in addition to preoperative MMA (oral acetaminophen and/or gabapentin) in reducing opioid consumption in adult female subjects undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery between 2015 and 2020
A total of 228 subjects were included in the study and divided in two groups: PECS block group (received PECS block + MMA) and control Group (received only MMA)
The primary outcome was to compare postoperative opioid consumption between both groups
The secondary outcome was intergroup comparisons of the following: postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)
PACU non-opioid analgesic medication required
length of PACU stay and the incidence of 30-day postoperative complications between both groups
Results: Two hundred and twenty-eight subjects (n = 228) were included in the study
A total of 174 subjects were allocated in the control group and 54 subjects were allocated in the PECS block group
Breast reduction and mastectomy/lumpectomy surgeries were the most commonly performed procedures (48% and 28%
The total amount of perioperative (intraoperative and PACU) MME was 27 [19
the mean overall incidence of postsurgical complications at 30 days was 3% (N = 5)
the only complication observed in the PECS groups (N = 2)
and hematoma (N = 2) and wound dehiscence (N = 1) in the control group
Conclusion: PECS block combined with MMA may not reduce intraoperative and/or PACU opioid consumption in patients undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery
our study hypothesized that the use of a PECS block in combination with MMA will reduce perioperative opioid consumption in patients undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery
Considering the limited evidence on the use of PECS block in combination with MMA on breast surgery
we conducted a retrospective chart review to compare postoperative opioid consumption (oral morphine milligram equivalents [MME]) in subjects undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery under general anesthesia
preoperative oral MMA (with acetaminophen and/or gabapentin) and with or without PECS block
After full-board protocol review and approval (Protocol #2019E0641) from our Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP)—The Ohio State University
electronic medical record (EMR) review to assess the efficacy of using preoperative PECS block in addition to preoperative MMA with oral acetaminophen and/or gabapentin to reduce perioperative opioid consumption in adult female subjects undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery under general anesthesia at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) between July 1
The decision of performing the PECS block prior to surgery was at the surgeon's and anesthesia care provider's discretion
≥18 years of age who underwent outpatient elective breast surgery and received preoperative MMA with oral acetaminophen and/or gabapentin as preventive analgesia
Subjects were excluded if they met any of the following criteria: chronic use of opioids due to any medical/surgical conditions
opioid consumption within 48 h prior to surgery
use of gabapentin within 30 days prior to surgery
use of acetaminophen within 7 days prior to surgery
and subjects scheduled for non-elective breast surgery
Eligible subjects were allocated into one of two groups: PECS block Group (both
PECS and MMA were administered) and control group (only MMA was administered)
The primary outcome was to compare MME in subjects who underwent outpatient elective breast surgery and received oral MMA with or without the use of preoperative PECS block
Secondary outcomes included the length of surgery
amount of non-opioid analgesic medication required during surgery and PACU
and incidence of 30-day postoperative complications
Preoperative MMA with oral acetaminophen 975 mg and/or gabapentin 600 mg as preventive analgesia was given within 2 h prior to surgery
The anesthesia technique followed institutional recommended guidelines
Induction was conducted with intravenous (IV) fentanyl 1.5–2.5 μg/kg and lidocaine 40–100 mg
followed by IV propofol 2.0–2.5 milligrams per kilo (mg/kg) as a hypnotic agent and IV rocuronium 0.6–1.0 mg/kg for the neuromuscular blockade to facilitate endotracheal intubation
Anesthesia maintenance was achieved with sevoflurane in a 45/55% oxygen/air mixture to attain and average minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of 1 throughout the intraoperative period
Intraoperative opioids included intravenous fentanyl and hydromorphone
while oral oxycodone was prescribed after PACU/hospital discharge
The ultrasound-guided PECS block was performed following institutional recommended guidelines
A local anesthetic infiltration was performed at the levels of 3rd and 4th ribs
along the mid-axillary line from each side
PECS I was performed by introducing the needle in plane from medial to lateral and injecting 20–30 ml of 0.5% ropivacaine in the interfascial plane between pectoralis minor and pectoralis major muscles form each side
PECS II blocks consisted of the same steps as PECS I block
but with the bilateral infiltration of the local anesthetic between the pectoralis minor and serratus anterior muscles
Patient demographic and clinical characteristics were summarized for the two study groups using descriptive statistics
Comparisons between the control and PECS block groups included baseline demographics
Categorical variables were compared between groups using either a Chi-square test or a Fisher's Exact test
and continuous variables were compared using either a two-sample t-test or a Wilcoxon Rank Sum test
Linear regression analysis was also used to assess the association of overall opioid consumption between both groups
adjusted by length of surgery and type of procedure
Secondary objectives (time to first opioid dose
total PACU stay length) were compared between the two groups using either a Chi-square test
All data analyses were performed using SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc.
CONSORT flow diagram for subjects included in the study
Demographics and surgical variables are summarized in Table 2
The average age of subjects was 48 ± 15.1 years old
with subjects in the control group slightly older in age than in the PECS group [50.4 ± 14.2 versus (vs.) 40.3 ± 15.7; p < 0.001]
The groups were comparable with respect to body mass index (BMI) (30 [6.2])
The PECS group had fewer American Society of Anesthesiology physical status (ASA) classification of 3 (9.3 vs
27.6%; p = 0.001) and more ASA 1 classification of 1 (33.3 vs
14.3%; p = 0.001) when compared with the control group
ASA classification of two subjects was similar in both groups
Regarding the preoperative MMA administration
140 (80%) subjects in the control group and 49 subjects (89%) in the PECS group received a combination of acetaminophen and gabapentin (p = 0.155); the remaining subjects in each group received either acetaminophen or gabapentin alone
The median dose of acetaminophen and gabapentin for all subjects was 975 [650–975] mg
the PECS II technique was the most used among subjects compared to PECS I (79.6 vs
a bilateral PECS block was performed in most subjects with only 5% of the PECS II group subjects having a unilateral PECS block
the most common surgeries performed were breast reduction (78%)
the most common surgeries performed on the control group were breast reduction (39%)
mastectomy/lumpectomy (34%) and breast reconstruction (10%)
The median length of surgery time was significantly prolonged in the PECS group in comparison with the control group (153 [128–182] min and 125 [77–168] min
the median duration of anesthesia was also longer in the PECS group when compared with the control group (190 [53–293] min and 163 [34–717] min
the median length of PACU stay was similar between the control and PECS groups (146 [125–186] min vs
Lastly, an additional linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the association of overall opioid consumption between both groups, adjusted by length of surgery and type of procedure. This analysis showed no differences between groups. Table 4 summarizes the adjusted OR
Logistic regression analysis of overall opioid consumption adjusted by surgery length or surgery type
There were a few differences on the use of intraoperative medications (Table 2)
The use of intraoperative ketorolac (IV 30 mg) and dexamethasone (IV 8 mg) were significantly higher in the PECS group than in the control group (19 vs
The results obtained in our study showed that the use of PECS as a strategy for postoperative analgesia after breast surgery did not decrease the perioperative opioid consumption when compared with the use of opioid-free MMA alone (acetaminophen/gabapentin/ketorolac)
There were no significant differences in opioid consumption between groups during the intraoperative period
the PACU stay or the overall in-hospital perioperative period
overall opioid consumption by surgery length and type
there were no inter-group substantial differences either
We are aware of some limitations in our study that could increase the risk of bias in our results
due to the intrinsic limitation of a retrospective study
and the inability to collect opioid consumption for 24 h
limited our study to investigate an extended postoperative opioid consumption outcome that could provide us a better understanding of the analgesic needs and postoperative acute or chronic pain for this outpatient population
most of study population received preoperative acetaminophen and gabapentin (82%) and intraoperative dexamethasone (90%) as part of the MMA regimen
and a few subjects (11%) received intraoperative ketorolac
the doses of MMA regimen were not consistent among subjects because clinicians guided their clinical postoperative pain management according to institutional clinical guidelines
pre-existing medical conditions and/or their own or personalized clinical discretions could also play a role in this variability
an important factor that could have influenced the slightly higher intraoperative opioid requirements in the PECs group is the longer duration of surgical procedures in the PECS block group when compared to the control group
a potential human error during data collection and/or data transferring
as well as some inconsistencies among medical records may have occurred
the recent implementation (2018) of PECS block use at our institution contributed to the uneven number of subjects analyzed on each group
due to the retrospective research methodology of the study
we were not able to collect pain scores after surgery because the data was inconsistent on the number and time of pain scores assessed after surgery
the inclusion of different breast procedures
mainly breast reduction and mastectomy/lumpectomy
with various degrees of invasiveness might reflect different trajectories of postoperative pain and opioid consumption might interfered the outcomes of this study
other factors that were not within the scope of our analysis
concomitant medication and/or pharmacodynamic considerations may had impact our outcomes
Despite the fact that intraoperative peripheral nerve blocks are commonly used as an adjunct safe approach for pain management
our results suggest that the use of PECS block combined with MMA may not reduce intraoperative and/or PACU opioid consumption in subjects undergoing outpatient elective breast surgery

Jan 17, 2025Yes, you can build a Superman chest at home with a few weights and consistent training. We love the rows of chest machines at a gym, but they aren't necessary to build bigger pecs. Plus, whether you're working with minimal equipment or relying solely on you bodyweight, hitting a chest workout at home offers flexibility and convenience
"You only need two things for growth: mechanical tension and volume," says Ryan Hopkins, certified advanced sports performance coach (USAW) and personal training manager of SoHo Strength Lab.
These home pectoral exercises and chest workouts only utilize bodyweight and free weights
but don't underestimate them—you will grow using these
They feature variations of pushups and chest presses
which are two incredible pec builders.
"Because of the lack of big resistance
these exercises place mechanical stress on your chest tissue in those range of motions you typically get with machines," Hopkins explains
which by nature require a lot of tension to maintain and move in and out of with speed."
but take anywhere from 45 to 75 seconds of rest between sets on all exercises
skip down the Chest Exercises You Can Do at Home section below
Seated 1½ Dumbbell Overhead PressSeated 1½ Dumbbell Overhead Press
press both dumbbells up in a straight line and lower them back down to the starting position—maintaining control throughout the movement. Want to up the challenge
You can use a one and a half rep for maximal upper chest stimulation
"Yes, this is a traditional exercise, but it hits the clavicular head (upper chest) of your pec really well in a neutral grip where most chest exercises work on the lower
bigger sternal head of the pec," Hopkins says.
Place your feet on a small elevated surface six inches to one foot above the ground
Keep your trunk tight and stiff so your hips don’t sag and negate the decline position as you perform the pushup.
“Most people think they’re holding the position
their hips are so far down that they might as well be doing a traditional pushup,” Hopkins says
You need to employ your stabilizing muscles to maintain the straight line of the plank
Pushup Modified 21’sStart from the bottom phase of a pushup
Perform seven reps from the bottom to the middle position
Hold the middle position for seven seconds
slowly descend to the bottom phase and pump out another seven full reps.
“Make sure you hold a tight plank position throughout,” Hopkins says
but time the movement so it takes four seconds to lower on the eccentric before slowly pushing up.
1½ Dumbbell Floor Press With Tempo1½ Dumbbell Floor Press With Tempo
Lie on your back with a dumbbell in each hand
Slowly lower them down until both elbows touch the floor
and then press all the way back up quickly
"Don't rest or relax at any point," Hopkins says.
Descend all the way down into a traditional pushup so your body is roughly an inch from touching the floor
push up to just short of the locked out top position and hold for 2 more seconds
DO NOT straighten your arms out all the way
“Make sure there’s no movement during the pauses,” Hopkins stresses
Alternating Single Arm Dumbbell Floor Press + Bilateral PressLie on your back with a dumbbell in each hand
then lower one down until that elbow hits the floor
DeFranco Pushup"This move was made popular by strength and conditioning coach Joe DeFranco," Hopkins says. "DO NOT forget the squeeze at the top
Use your back muscles to “pull” yourself down to the floor
isometrically (so nothing actually moves) squeeze your hands towards one another creating tension in your chest.

IntroductionA brief introduction to PECPEC is a trusted service, isn’t it?How can businesses protect their PEC mailbox? The PEC “invoice scam” Not the same campaign, again? What do we know about the malware? And, what happened to the victims?PEC mailbox providers: are they taking any action?Access the Italian translation here
The service enables senders to prove that an email has been sent and received from one PEC mailbox to another PEC mailbox
It is often used to send important documents to public administration
it means the recipient cannot reject the mail - or claim to have not received it
malicious actors are already using PEC to send emails
leveraging its features to target everyday people
With an interconnected “European PEC” that expands throughout Europe
criminals will have an infinitely greater opportunity to exploit certified email
Considering the potential scope of the so-called “European PEC”
the pool of potential victims is set to grow exponentially
how can business owners protect their mailboxes
Here’s a quick five-step checklist to help minimize your risk:
Having learned the basics of how to protect your business from PEC email abuse
As a self-confessed petrol head I’ve been following the YouTube channel
Ready for my latest installment of fumes and burnt rubber
spam and scams ….apparently your job never leaves you alone
and used to send malspam to hundreds of other PEC addresses
that amount has not yet been paid despite numerous solicitation emails
I’ll be obliged to contact my attorney for further legal actions
This is a formal warning and stops any prescription
You can download the Invoice by clicking the link “Invoice” (underlined!) Best Regards
"you need to pay this invoice - download here" email
where "here" is a link to some sort of malware or phish
especially - as he admitted - he isn’t tech-savvy
This wasted a considerable amount of time and hundreds of euros on Gabriele's side alone
When he finally reached the owner of the PEC email address
This suggests that countless others likely spent valuable working hours conducting the same checks
the PEC sender had to repeatedly explain to everyone that the issue wasn’t directly his fault
further adding to the wasted time and aggravation
it collectively cost thousands of Euros and hours
the owner approached me with a suspicious email
it was the exact same email campaign - only this time with a fresh malware sample ready for analysis
Passwords will be exfiltrated and potentially exploited for malicious activities
there were no severe repercussions for the two victims highlighted here
They were savvy enough to detect the threat and take appropriate actions to verify
Spam and malicious emails aren’t just technical issues
The PEC regulations typically allow for viruses and malware to be rejected
but not all forms of unsolicited messages (spam) can be outright rejected
providers handling PEC mailboxes tend to apply minimal security measures
using real-time blocklists or spam filters) risk legal complications
Even moving PEC emails to the spam folder is rare, as explained by a court case where a misplaced email ended up in the spam folder
the court ruled the recipient was responsible for checking the spam folder
operators have little incentive to provide anything above the minimum security for PEC mailboxes
business owners like Gabriele are more likely to receive spam
and other malicious emails into their trusted PEC mailboxes
If you receive a suspicious email, please follow the advice in this blog, report it to your PEC provider, and share it with Spamhaus’ Threat Intel community portal to help protect others.

There’s a reason why international chest day is at the beginning of the training week and not the end
and it’s because this muscle takes center stage in the quest for strength

But, when it comes to building a dimensional chest, the bench press alone won’t suffice

If you're looking to supersize your chest and mix up your regular pushing exercises

Eric warns this exercise does look weird: “It looks crazy and like it’s going to rip my shoulders,” he says

he says that it provides an “immense stretch” and lets you “drive just as much stimulus with less weight”
Just don't each for your regular dumbbell weight either while doing these
Mike suggests aiming for 1-2 sets with light weights and focus on keeping the movement slow and controlled

home and active products from the T3 experts
Positioning the bench at an incline will hit the upper pecs more and using the cable machine provides constant tension for a better contraction
“The reason for having a bench is that what’s nice is now we don’t have to worry about bracing,” Eric explains
This means more focus will be placed on the chest for better gains
He also adds that the weight will pull you back into the bench
“What that’s going to do is drive all the force into our pecs,” he says

Grow your lower pecs with this trainer's advice
Looking to train your lower pecs but not sure you've nailed down the correct exercises for this
Here are three exercises to include in your next upper body day
according to a bodybuilding personal trainer
"For many of us the lower portion of the chest is the most difficult area of the pecs to build"
Thankfully, he didn't leave us in the dark about building out the lower pecs. Instead he said there are only really three exercises you need build a set of rounded pecs and they don't involve push ups or decline presses.
is composed of two main heads: the upper (clavicular) head and the lower (sternocostal) head
"That said if you look at certain textbooks you'll see the lowest portion of the pecs is divided into a third head
the abdominal head," coach Gonzalez explains
"While the entire chest is responsible for horizontal induction or bringing your arms across the body the lower pecs also contribute to shoulder extension which involves bringing your arms down from a forward position."
This is important to note when selecting the most effective exercises to target the lower pecs
Now that we have a better understanding of the lower chest anatomy
let's jump into the three exercises that will help you build rounded lower pecs
While many people assume that decline presses are one of the best exercises for building the lower chest
the flat bench press offers superior overall benefits for building your chest.
"Not only does it feel more natural and lends itself better to progressive overload but the flat bench does a better job at targeting the sternumcostal head which makes up about 2/3 of the chest
Gonzalez referenced a 2020 study that compared chest muscle activation across five different bench press angles and it found that the mid and lower pecs showed the highest muscle activation at a zero-degree incline (flat bench).
If you are now feeling inspired to incorporate the flat bench press into your training but weighing up if the barbell or dumbbell will be better, Gonzalez weighs in. In the barbell vs dumbbell debate
both bench presses have their own benefits
and allow you to lift more weight compared to dumbbells
offer a greater range of motion and enhanced abduction at the top of the movement since you can bring your hands closer together at the top," he noted
ensure you're setting up with your shoulder blades retracted and packed
This position not only keeps the shoulders nice and stable but also gives your lower pecs more leverage
effectively creating a slightly declined angle
Although traditionally regarded as a back exercise
Gonzalez notes that bench pullovers can significantly activate the chest
he goes into why the pullover is so effective for activating the chest muscles
but for those that want to cut to the chase
The muscles in the lower chest play a big role in bringing your arms down from above your head
when you lower the weight behind your head
those lower chest muscles get stretched out
those same muscles work the hardest to pull it up
This combination of stretch and contraction makes the pullover great for engaging and building up the lower part of your chest
To get the best results during your bench pullovers
Gonzalez says to limit your range of motion by stopping when the weight is just above your head
rather than bringing it all the way over your chest
"This keeps the tension on the pecs and keeps you within the range of motion where the lower pecs have leverage."
Gonzalez explained that high to low cable crossovers allow you to isolate the pecs by performing horizontal abduction while aligning the motion with your lower pec fibers
This type of movement removes involvement from the triceps
helping to further isolate the pecs.
"During a bench press your triceps may fatigue first
with cable crossovers you ensure that the pecs will go through a full range of motion and fatigue before any other muscle."
Start with arms parallel to the floor and a slight bend in your elbows
Pull the handles down to meet near your waist

For Pec, the Galaxy’s spectacular 23-year-old winger
“At Vasco there was a lot of pressure,” he said through a translator
For the Galaxy, the change also came when Pec left Brazil for Carson
Through the past seven seasons the team had done very little tackling
losing more games than they won and getting outscored by 53 goals
they won 19 games for the first time in 13 years
matched the franchise modern-era record for goals and came within a tiebreaker of their first regular-season conference title since 2011
While MLS and its Apple broadcast partners were deeply invested in Lionel Messi leading Inter Miami to the MLS Cup
earning the league’s newcomer of the year award
the way that we played is a bit different,” he said of his Brazilian club
Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said the difference is noticeable
“I’ve seen the evolution on the field,” he said
“When he first came there was a lot of stress
You could tell he came from a club [where] winning and losing and producing were heavy
“I saw a player who had unique talents and then inside of that some really
really great talent that needs to come out.”
That’s not to say there wasn’t some assembly required
when he arrived in MLS he was a “heels on the sideline” left winger
one who waited for the ball to come to him
Galaxy forward Gabriel Pec controls the ball during a playoff match against Colorado on Nov
(David Zalubowski / Associated Press) “When we watched video of him
the interesting thing was when he was scoring goals
he was constantly ending up inside the box,” Vanney said
“So the question was ‘how do we get this guy inside the box more often?’
“What’s been great with him is he’s just had a lot of open-mindedness to develop different parts of his game.”
Because Pec has never lived outside Rio de Janeiro
his English remains a work in progress and the adjustment to Southern California took time
another Brazilian who won three MLS Cups with the Galaxy and is now a member of Vanney’s staff
has been instrumental in helping Pec overcome both hurdles
“Juni has been right next to us on the field every time I talk to him,” Vanney said
to feel like he’s not missing things and has helped him to really kind of grasp and understand concepts.”
The Brazilian also benefited from the selflessness of teammate Joseph Paintsil
Pec started the season on the left wing and had just three goals and two assists through 12 games before Paintsil went to the sidelines for a month with a hamstring injury
allowing Vanney to move Pec across the field
He responded with two goals and four assists in five games and when Paintsil returned
Since then Pec has failed to score or assist on a goal just four times in the last 21 games in all competitions
I think that’s the biggest thing I didn’t realize
“We definitely had multiple names,” Kuntz said. “What I wanted to avoid was some of the pitfalls I think the Galaxy has fallen into in the past where you become too fixated on one player and kind of chase them to the end of the Earth. It was really important to have options.”
Eleven months later Kuntz is sure the money he devoted to Pec — which includes a guaranteed annual salary of $2.5 million through the 2028 season — will be money well spent.
“We knew he was good. We knew he scored goals,” Kuntz said of Pec, who has had a goal or assist in each of the Galaxy’s last seven games, including the playoffs. “But I don’t think we thought this timeline was going to be how it showed up. He is so competitive. I think that’s the biggest thing I didn’t realize. How competitive he is.”
Galaxy
Joseph Paintsil and Riqui Puig each score goals as the Galaxy defeat Colorado 4-1 to advance to the MLS Cup conference semifinals
Whether the Galaxy will have to pay Pec through the end of that contract seems unlikely
if Pec continues to produce as he has this year
will only make that move more successful once it does happen
which is why he credits his success to a higher power
“If perhaps I had gone to the Premier League
that wouldn’t have been the best-case scenario,” Pec said through translator Camila Kawashita
All I care about at the moment is focusing on the Galaxy.”
because for them he’s truly been a godsend

Feb 6, 2025If you're looking to pack on serious chest muscle, Mike Israetel has you covered. The exercise scientist recently shared a video with his tops tips for maximizing chest gains—especially for those who have trouble activating these muscles.
Mike Israetel, Ph.D., co-founder of Renaissance Periodization
is known for breaking down strength-training concepts into practical
science-backed advice to help lifters maximize muscle growth and performance.
Israetel suggests performing dumbbell flyes
Use a light pair of dumbbells and hit a couple of sets of about five to six reps.
which helps build the mind-muscle connection if you have trouble connecting with and activating the chest
When it's time to lock in for the bench
Israetel reminds us that proper set up is key
which slightly takes the front delts out of the movement.
your chest rises up—allowing for greater mind-muscle connection and pre-stretching your chest
The back arch in chest pressing is often debated
but Israetel explains that maintaining a slight arch helps lift the chest
enhancing the stretch and maximizing muscle activation for better growth
"You don't have to do crazy cat back antics," Israetel says
"We get that little bit of an arch and all of a sudden
Minding your chest position is another key in accelerating your chest gains
If you're still having trouble activating the chest
increase the time of your eccentric phase while staying focused on your set up
Two to three seconds in the eccentric phase can make a world of a difference
you can direct that pain into your chest," he says
Gabriel Pec has LA Galaxy on the verge of locking down the No
1 seed in the Western Conference thanks to a standout Matchday 34 performance that earned him MLS Player of the Matchday presented by Michelob Ultra honors
The Brazilian winger scored a goal and added two assists in LA's 4-2 home win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC
extending their lead atop the West to seven points
Pec, acquired last winter from Vasco da Gama for a reported eight-figure transfer fee
He's just the fifth Galaxy player to produce at least 25 goal contributions in his debut season
and the first since Zlatan Ibrahimović in 2018
He's the only first-year player in MLS this season with at least 25 goal contributions while boasting the highest pass completion percentage (89.7%) among all players with 10 or more assists
Pec's assist on fellow 2024 signing Joseph Paintsil's 10th goal of the season gave the Galaxy four players – Dejan Joveljić (14), Pec (13), Riqui Puig (11) and Paintsil (10) – with at least 10 goals in the same season
Pec is the first Galaxy player to receive the MLS Player of the Matchday award since Billy Sharp in Matchday 33 of the 2023 season. Following Portland Timbers star Evander's recognition last matchday
Brazilian players have won the award in back-to-back matchdays for the first time in league history
The Galaxy are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2 when visiting the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (9:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass)
The MLS Player of the Matchday presented by Michelob Ultra is selected each matchday of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications
A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote
while an X (formerly known as Twitter) fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting

Australia — Researchers have known for a while that spending too much time on social media can lead to unrealistic beauty standards and poor self-image
platforms like TikTok and Instagram can pressure guys to keep working towards a more muscular physique
A recent study published in New Media & Society has found that men fixated on likes and comments on their posts were more likely to show signs of muscle dysmorphia
It’s a distorted belief that their body is small and weak when that is not really the case
The latest research shows social media fueling muscle dysmorphia and creating unhealthy obsessions for six-pack abs and perfect pecs
“Previous research has largely focused on women, but we’re now seeing that men are also vulnerable to the pressures of online body ideals,” says lead study author Luigi Donnarumma
a psychology honors graduate from the University of South Australia
The researchers surveyed almost 100 men between 18 and 34 on their social media activity. All confessed to viewing celebrity, fashion, and fitness content on social media platforms
The link between muscular dysmorphia and social media was apparent when men interacted with the feedback from other social media users. Nineteen percent of men displayed symptoms related to muscle dysmorphia. According to the researchers, these young men were at a high risk of developing unrealistic expectations of their bodies
and our study shows that social media isn’t just a platform for sharing content: it’s a powerful source of social validation that can significantly impact how young men perceive their bodies,” says Donnarumma
One of the best ways to stop muscle dysmorphia is to prevent it from happening in the first place
The researchers advise limiting the time spent checking your social media posts
they propose men seek out mental health programs targeted at addressing body issues such as muscle dysmorphia
This study used an online survey to gather data on social media use and muscle dysmorphia (MD) symptoms among 95 young Australian men
and social media ads targeting those interested in fitness
Excluded from the study were individuals with previous diagnoses related to body dysmorphia or eating disorders
ensuring a general population sample without prior clinical concerns
Participants completed the survey on Qualtrics
which included questions about the frequency of viewing celebrity
and fitness content on social networking sites (SNSs)
the importance they placed on received likes and comments
Measures were carefully adapted for SNS-specific contexts
making it possible to investigate associations between specific social media activities and MD indicators
The findings showed that the importance placed on receiving likes and comments was a significant predictor of MD symptoms
even after accounting for demographics like age
Other activities—such as viewing celebrity
and fitness content—were positively correlated with MD symptoms but did not independently predict MD when controlling for demographic factors
the study suggests that social approval on SNSs (via likes and comments) may play a substantial role in MD symptom development
The study’s cross-sectional design limits its ability to determine causation; it can only suggest associations
the use of self-reported data may introduce bias
as participants’ perceptions and experiences with social media content could vary
Although recruitment was from general gym members
the advertising may have attracted a specific subgroup of men particularly focused on fitness
since MD was not clinically diagnosed in participants
findings are limited to self-reported symptoms rather than confirmed MD cases
The study highlights that men who place high value on social feedback (likes and comments) might experience greater muscle dysmorphia symptoms
This suggests that the interactive components of social media
which offer immediate validation or rejection
could be more influential than passive content viewing alone
These insights are crucial for developing mental health interventions
especially those targeting social media literacy and self-perception in young men
Educating young men about managing social feedback and understanding the unrealistic standards often depicted online could be an effective strategy in reducing MD symptoms
This study was conducted without external funding
The authors disclosed no financial interests or conflicts of interest related to this research

The 2024 MLS season saw plenty of new faces make a massive impact, but none more so than LA Galaxy's Gabriel Pec
That was the consensus from Andrew Wiebe and Matthew Doyle in the latest Extratime podcast, with both co-hosts giving the nod to the Brazilian winger for the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award – even above odds-on favorite Luis Suárez
it’s Gabriel Pec," Doyle said of the 23-year-old Designated Player acquired from Vasco da Gama
"I thought he was the most important player on the West’s best regular-season team
Additionally, the former Brazilian youth international showed the Galaxy can win even without star midfielder Riqui Puig
who was sidelined for part of the summer with a groin injury
"When Riqui Puig was missing for those five games this year
it was consistently Gabriel Pec who was the best player on the LA Galaxy," Doyle said
"And this is the second-best team in the league in terms of points per game."
While Wiebe also pledged "I’m voting for Gabriel Pec as it stands," he concedes the award will likely go elsewhere
"I think Luis Suárez is gonna win it in a landslide," he said, fully aware of the 18g/7a the legendary Uruguayan striker has put up in his debut season with Supporters' Shield-winning Inter Miami CF
Doyle agreed while acknowledging the 37-year-old veteran is just as deserving of the prize
He was Player of the Year in Brazil last year
he has carried that with him forward into MLS," Doyle said
"His goal contributions per 90 are second in the league
he’s still for the most part Luis Suárez."
the Extratime crew gave shoutouts to other new arrivals worthy of consideration
"Cincinnati fans in my mentions about Luca Orellano
He's been great," Doyle said of the on-loan Argentine wingback
quite as key for a team that's not quite as good
"Same with Jonathan "Cabecita" Rodríguez (Portland Timbers). Petar Musa, money well spent from FC Dallas."
Wiebe showed some love to other high-profile names that joined MLS in 2024

Whitehead had an MRI Monday to confirm the diagnosis
The source said that it's not necessarily season-ending
and that he could be back later in the season or for the playoffs
The source also said that due to the location of the tear
Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead will miss some time, but not necessarily the rest of the season, with a torn pectoral muscle. Vincent Carchietta-Imagn ImagesThe injury happened early in the fourth quarter on Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito's 17-yard touchdown run
Whitehead dove for the tackle and got spun around upon impact
He immediately shot up and ran to the sideline holding his left shoulder/chest area
Whitehead's 47 solo tackles through 11 games in 2024 are the most on the team
while his 76 combined tackles are second most
He has two tackles for a loss and three pass breakups
The Bucs had just claimed safety Mike Edwards off waivers during their Week 11 bye
and he spent most of the game lining up in dime packages on third down
but he filled in for Whitehead for the remainder of the game
A fourth-round draft pick by the Bucs in 2018, Whitehead spent the first four years of his career in Tampa and was a starter in their Super Bowl LV victory, before signing with the New York Jets in 2022-2023
He reunited with the Bucs this offseason on a two-year deal worth $9 million
Whitehead tore the labrum in his shoulder during the 2020 NFC Championship Game and started Super Bowl LV with the injury by using a protective harness
LA Galaxy forward Gabriel Pec has been named 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year
an award recognizing the year’s most impactful new MLS player with prior professional experience
tallying 16 goals and 14 assists in 33 matches
Pec became the fourth-youngest player in MLS history to record at least 30 goal contributions in a single season
He's also the youngest player with at least 15g/10a in an MLS campaign (excluding the shootout era)
The All-Star winger helped LA return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, earning the Western Conference No. 2 seed (64 points). The Galaxy, who scored a Western Conference-best 69 goals, will compete in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup

Pec is the second LA Galaxy player to earn this award, joining Zlatan Ibrahimović (2018). He beat out fellow finalists Luis Suárez (Inter Miami CF) and Luca Orellano (FC Cincinnati)
Newcomer of the Year is voted on by MLS club technical staff
Eight universities recently joined together to form the Power Esports Conference (PEC)
The PEC is a new esports scheduling alliance catered exclusively to top tier Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions
with the Mountain West still remaining Boise State Esports primary conference
spearheaded the formation of this new alliance
University of Nebraska and University of Southern California
also join the roster to compete in the alliance’s inaugural year
The PEC gives Division 1 athletic schools the opportunity to face off against similar institutions in a regular
it gives universities the resources to create exciting matchups that tap into rivalries present in traditional university sports
It also allows these large schools to pool together resources to create a league with exemplary production
Chris Haskell expressed great support for the new PEC in a recent press release by Syracuse University
“We are elated to help establish this conference and play peer institutions in a fixed season schedule that expands upon our traditional athletic rivalries,” Haskell said
“The PEC will be a great addition to the other leagues and publisher tournaments that make for a great student experience.”
The creation of the PEC is yet another example of Boise State’s commitment to being a leader in collegiate esports. Boise State University President Marlene Tromp recently highlighted Boise State’s Esports in this year’s state of the university address.
“More young people tune into live broadcasts or match highlights on social feeds like Twitch
than they do for professional sports,” Tromp said
“That means Boise State is reaching a critical demographic of students to make them aware of this university with the outstanding excellence of that program.”
The PEC season starts September 23rd with teams competing in Valorant, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Teams will compete in a round robin format for seven weeks in the fall and spring. The leagues postseason takes place spring 2025. LA Galaxy winger Gabriel Pec was voted the 2024 Newcomer of the Year, MLS announced Monday
The Brazilian led all first-year players with 30 goal contributions (16 goals
trailing only four MLS players of any tenure
and was voted to the MLS All-Star team this summer
with the Galaxy forward winning the equally weighted votes among the media (49.6 percent)
players (34 percent) and club personnel (29 percent)
Pec is the fourth Galaxy player to register 30 goal contributions
Robbie Keane (2014) and Zlatan Ibrahimović (2018 and 2019)
He and Ibrahimović are the only Galaxy players to earn the honor since its creation in 2007
logging 168 appearances for the Brazilian club and scoring 25 goals
It was enough to land him on the Galaxy’s radar
with LA signing Pec to a five-year contract as a young designated player on Jan
The dribbly right winger was dynamic throughout the 2024 season, becoming a regular in Vanney’s lineup by late March and appearing in all but one of the Galaxy’s games. The consistent runout helped him be the team’s volume shooter, tying LAFC’s Denis Bouanga for the league’s lead with his 59 shots on goal (47.6 percent of his total attempts)
He came up big for LA as it challenged for the conference title
logging three game-winning goals and six game-winning assists as the Galaxy finished second in the West
Voting for this and all year-end awards was conducted in the first half of October, concluding on Oct. 21, the Monday after Decision Day. Pec continued to prove his importance in the Galaxy’s dominant first-round triumph over the Colorado Rapids
scoring and adding three assists as part of the Galaxy’s 9-1 aggregate series win across two games
He and his teammates will now have to wait more than three weeks for their next involvement in MLS’s expanded postseason
with the conference semifinals commencing on Nov

Vancouver (13-9-7) defender Ranko Veselinović poked the ball away from the Galaxy’s Dejan Joveljic near the corner of the six-yard box but Pec ran onto the loose ball and scored on a one-touch shot to make it 1-0 in the 35th minute
The Galaxy (17-7-7) took a 2-0 lead on an own goal by Vancouver’s Sebastian Berhalter in the 50th
but Brian White put away a feed from Berhalter in the 63rd minute
Puig scored on a feed from Pec in the third minute of stoppage time to give the Galaxy a 4-1 lead before Sam Adekugbe, a 29-year-old defender in his seventh season with Vancouver, capped the scoring with his first MLS goal about four minutes later.
The Galaxy are the first team in MLS history to have four players score at least 10 goals in the same season: Joveljic (14), Pec (13), Puig (11) and Paintsil (10).
and he is expected to miss an extended period of time that could include the rest of the season
The injury occurred in the first quarter on a running play when the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Bentley was engaged with 6-foot-4, 335-pound right guard Anthony Bradford and wrestled him to the ground with his left arm
Bentley flexed his left arm after the play and remained in the game for one more snap before heading to the sideline to undergo tests
He was initially deemed questionable to return to the game before the team ruled him out in the second half

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Bills middle linebacker Terrel Bernard suffered a pectoral strain in Thursday night's win over the Miami Dolphins but it is not considered to be a season-ending injury
sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday
Bernard is a candidate for injured reserve as he could be out for about a month
Coach Sean McDermott said during a news conference Friday that the team has not decided whether Bernard will be placed on injured reserve
[Bernard's] gonna be out multiple weeks," McDermott said
"We're talking about whether or not it's an IR-conducive type of situation or not
We still got some internal conversations that we have to have yet to determine if it's gonna end up in IR or not."
Tests revealed the extent of Bernard's injury after he left the Bills' 31-10 win in the first quarter and did not return. The 2022 third-round pick earned the team's middle linebacker role in the 2023 offseason after Tremaine Edmunds left in free agency
and Bernard started all 17 games last year
Bernard, 25, is one of two team captains this year, along with quarterback Josh Allen
you see just the work that guys put in and you hate when they're not able to play 'cause this is what they do it for," defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said Friday
"They do it for Sundays and the opportunity to play for a championship
Despite the injuries, the Buffalo defense held Miami to 10 points to improve to 2-0. The team had three interceptions, including two by defensive back Ja'Marcus Ingram -- playing more as a result of Johnson's injury -- and held the Dolphins to 1-for-5 on fourth down and 1-for-4 in the red zone
Baylon Spector
came in for Bernard and tied for the team lead in tackles with 10
McDermott said that he anticipates Spector continuing in that role while Bernard is out but that he had not yet met with the defensive staff
Spector has dealt with a variety of injuries in his NFL career, and it was not the first time he has come off the bench to play. In the 2023 regular-season finale against the Dolphins for the AFC East title, which the Bills won, linebacker Tyrel Dodson was injured
"I think Baylon's really starting to understand his body and what he needs to be able to be available," Babich said
to get more comfortable in the system and challenge him
I challenged him to be in control of our operation and run the operation like a Mike linebacker does for the Buffalo Bills

Meeting draws a mix of strong support and protest from public
The MASTERS Program administrators answer questions for the Public Education Commission regarding their application to renew the school's charter
a state-operated charter school was renewed for funding and operation for another five years
After reviewing the recommendation from the Charter Schools Division and listening to dozens of parent
The Public Education Commission voted unanimously to renew The MASTERS Program on Thursday
The Santa Fe school opened in 2010, offering an individual curriculum for each student “to honor learning preferences and interests,” with an emphasis on the Socratic method, according to its website
the room was packed with current and former students
most speaking favorably of their experiences with the school
told the PEC she found her love of biology in her time studying at The MASTERS Program
and hopes to get her associate’s degree in the subject when she graduates
“Having this college readiness program has allowed me to expand my interests
look into different career paths I might be interested in
and then be able to grow on that,” Schwartz Szeto said
most involved with the school’s student ambassadors program
also shared how the school helped them discover their passions in fields including law
said the school helped her connect with her teachers in a way previous schools had not
and said the school “found a place in my heart.” Several faculty members and parents also echoed these praises of the school
Plenty of students and families of The MASTERS Program shared testimony during the public comment portion of the meeting
with most in favor of renewing the charter
The meeting also drew a few former teachers and parents who voiced concerns about violations of special education law and alleged mistreatment of former employees, students and their families. Diana Boyd and Kristin Carlisle, who filed a lawsuit against the school in October
were among those who criticized the charter renewal
Boyd briefly recounted her experience, also detailed in the lawsuit
which alleges she was “pushed out of her teaching job” after bringing 10 concerns about special education practices at the school
two of which the Public Education Department deemed violated state law
“A school where remaining staff might feel afraid to advocate for students is an unsafe environment,” Boyd said
Boyd did not ask for the charter to not be renewed
but asked the PEC to put restrictions on the renewal
District 4 Commissioner Rebekka Burt told attendees who voiced concerns about the charter renewal that while their concerns are “not unheard,” the PEC’s role is not to partake in investigations of complaints made by those in the school community
and can only act after they have reviewed the results of complaints and investigations completed by the PED
“You're not in the wrong forum; you never have to apologize for bringing any kind of concerns
to address the commission ever,” Burt said
“But there are established processes in place that are available to any family
I don’t want anybody to feel unheard because I am not going to base my decision today around the complaints.”
The PEC ultimately chose to renew the charter for 5 more years without restriction
per the recommendation by the Charter Schools Division read by Cheryl Rowe
an authorizing practices administrator with the PED
The Charter Schools Division based its recommendation on the school's academic performance over the course of the contract term
Rowe said despite a significant drop in scores
the state school was still considered above average in academics by the PED
attributing the drop to an enrollment increase that included students with proficiency gaps in English and math
“[TMP] met the standards on student outcomes
educational program and equity and identity
they demonstrated substantial progress in governance responsibilities and other performance framework indicators,” Rowe read from the summary report
any standards not met (progress in mission
specific goals and financial compliance) are being extensively improved by the school administration
while showing support for the school’s academic performance and confidence the school brings to students
said his biggest concern for The MASTERS Program was a high level of governing council turnover
He suggested the school invite more public comment to its governing council meetings after governing council member (and SFCC Associate Dean) Kelly Trujillo said public comment “hasn’t been robust” at the school’s meetings
Carrillo also raised this concern about administrator turnover
asking Haas Moskowitz about her long-term plan as the fourth head of school in the past five years
Haas Moskowitz responded that her commitment to the school is “enormous and infinite.”
I will stay here for the rest of my working days,” Haas Moskowitz said
“Am I the person that the school wants and the community wants
I guess that's yet to be determined—through
a very robust evaluation—because I do agree in avenues and systems for processing concerns
as well as for impromptu conversations and relationship building.”
The PEC voted 9-0 in favor of renewing the charter without restrictions
Haas Moskowitz told SFR she has no comment on the decision
Mo Charnot is a Chicago-born graduate from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville
Mo joined the SFR staff in July 2023 to cover education

Pec notched his 14th assist of the campaign when Puig scored an insurance goal in the first minute of stoppage time. Miguel Berry was also credited with his third assist on Puig’s 13th goal.
John McCarthy totaled two saves in goal for the Galaxy.
Zack Steffen saved five shots for the Rapids.
The Western Conference-leading Galaxy topped 60 points for the third time since 2000. They set the club record with 67 in 2011.
The Galaxy return home to play Austin FC on Saturday. The Rapids will host the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.
Metrics details
a population-based cross-sectional study from 2015 to 2020
examined refractive error prevalence among 48,618 Iranian adults aged 31 to 70
employing random cluster sampling for demographic
and socioeconomic data collection through interviews
the sample population was categorized into groups
Results indicated a mean age of 49.52 ± 9.31 and a mean refractive error of 0.26 diopters (D) ± 1.6 SD (95% CI − 0.27 to -0.24)
Prevalence of myopia (< −0.5D) and hyperopia (> + 0.5D) was 22.6% (95% CI 22.2–23%) and 12.5% (95% CI 12.1–12.8%)
the prevalence of hyperopia and astigmatism exhibited a steady and significant rise with increasing age (p-value < 0.001 for both)
and rising again among individuals aged 60 and older
and Fars ethnicity were significantly related to a higher prevalence of myopia (p-value < 0.001 for all)
and lower-income (p-value = 0.005) were significantly related to higher prevalence of hyperopia
Astigmatism (> 1D) was prevalent in 25.5% of participants (95% CI 25.1–25.9%) and correlated with male gender
The study’s comparison with regional and international surveys highlighted the increase in myopia among those over 65 due to higher nuclear cataract rates in older adults
while hyperopia did not exhibit such associations
more population-based studies are needed to reveal the pattern of RE prevalence around the world
The rising prevalence of myopia in these regions necessitates more population-based studies which leads to the development of new public health policies aimed at providing clinical services to prevent visual impairment among working adults
many epidemiologic studies in Asia were conducted among school-aged or young adult populations
underscoring the importance of conducting epidemiological studies among adults
all these population-based studies cannot genuinely represent the ethnic diversity in Iran
These factors emphasize the importance of epidemiologic studies on the prevalence of REs in Iran
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of RE and potential socioeconomic lifestyle risk factors affecting the development of eye disease among the Iranian population
Written informed consent was collected from all participants
The central committee of PECS which is located at Farabi Eye Hospital
affiliated with the Tehran University of Medical Sciences
was responsible for the design and supervision of the whole study
This committee also defined and provided the same necessary instruments for all the selected centers
All optometrists were trained and assessed regularly by the central committee
This committee and the Tehran University of Medical Sciences also provided ethical approval (approval ID: IR.TUMS.DDRI.REC.1396.1) for this study and the study was performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki
Objective refraction was assessed using the autorefractor for all patients
the glass parameters were measured by a lensometer
Optometrists used the slit lamp to examine the corneal opacity and eyelid lesions and to measure the intraocular pressure(IOP) with a Goldman tonometer
the presence of strabismus was assessed with the cover-uncover test
the optometrists took two dilated slit lamps and fundus photographs from all participants
Participants who fulfilled at least one of the criteria mentioned below were referred to the ophthalmologist for further examination: "1
BCVA < 20/25 or 0.8 decimal on Snellen chart
trained ophthalmologists examined the referred participants with the slit lamp in each center
The ophthalmologic examination included evaluating eyelids
we evaluated the subjective refraction of both eyes in all subjects
Due to the high correlation in subjective refraction between the right and left eyes (Pearson’s correlation: r = 0.82 p-values < 0.005) in the whole population
we analyzed variables based on the right eye (OD) reports except for the anisometropia which involved both eyes in the analysis
Refractive error was defined based on the spherical equivalent (SE = sphere power + half of the cylinder power)
We considered eyes with − 0.5 ≤ SE ≤ 0.5 diopter (D) as emmetropes and categorized myopic eyes as SE < -0.5D and hyperopia as SE > + 0.5D
astigmatism was defined as the cylindrical error > 1D
We further classified astigmatism into the following groups: with the rule (WTR) as 0 ± 19°
Myopia was classified as low myopia with − 3 ≤ SE < − 0.5D
hyperopia was classified as low manifest hyperopia with 1 < SE < 3D and moderate to high manifest hyperopia with SE ≥ 3D
anisometropia was reported when there was a > 1.5D difference between both eyes
We further classified anisometropia into two categories: anisometropia with the same direction (both eyes with either myopia or hyperopia) and antimetropia (one eye myopic and the other hyperopic)
The estimates have been presented with their related 95% confidence interval (CI)
To evaluate the effect of selected sociodemographic variables on the refractive errors
considering the cluster sampling and probable design effect
we used simple and multivariable logistic regression on the multilevel analysis (Measurements on eyes as primary level and centers as second levels)
Odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% CIs are reported
All statistical analyses were performed by Stata (StataCorp
A P-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant
While assessing the prevalence of refractive errors in the population
it was found that 65% were emmetropic (31,488 subjects
and the remaining 35% of subjects (16,987) were ametropes
The mean value of SE in the entire population was − 0.26 D ± 1.6 SD (95% CI − 0.27 to − 0.24 D)
The distribution of different REs across age groups.
Distribution of REs among different age groups between two genders
multivariable analysis revealed that individuals residing in rural regions
were significantly less likely to be myopic (adjusted OR 0.85
A similar trend was observed for hyperopia and astigmatism (adjusted ORs 0.91
Individuals with higher education were more likely to be myopic or hyperopic (OR 1.3
respectively) compared to those who were illiterate
this association was not statistically significant among hyperopes (p-value = 0.8)
despite its significance among myopics (p-value < 0.001)
astigmatic individuals were less likely to have higher educations (OR 0.69 95% CI 0.63–0.76
an association was observed between myopia in citizens with elevated World Socioeconomic Index (WSI) (OR 1.11 95% CI 1.05–1.17
p-value < 0.001) while this trend was the opposite among individuals with hyperopia (OR 0.88 95% CI 0.81–0.96
p-value < 0.005) and astigmatism (OR 0.92 95% CI 0.87–0.98
myopia exhibited a significantly higher prevalence among Fars
and logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between myopia and Fars ethnicity when compared to Balouch (OR 0.76
p-value < 0.001) and Zaboli ethnicities (OR 0.76
Hyperopic individuals were associated with Arab
Both genders showed almost identical trends
All these varying reports show that there has been no established relationship between gender and REs
we observed a link between myopia and Fars ethnicity in comparison to Balouch and Zaboli ethnicities in Iran
The PECS was originally designed as a cohort study; however
we have exclusively presented the outcomes of the initial phase in the context of a cross-sectional study
The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a delay in the progression of the second phase of this cohort project
our method for monitoring the progression of refractive errors was limited to comparing different age groups
we would have tracked the progression over time within the framework of a comprehensive cohort study
The comparison between different population-based studies is difficult because of differences in sample population
One notable difference arises in cycloplegic refraction
particularly in population-based studies involving children or younger adults
Since our study focused on adults over 30 years old
this difference may introduce some bias when comparing our findings with those of studies involving younger participants
