"For non-chemists, aromatic compounds are particularly stable cyclic molecular structures. They are the building blocks of many of our everyday products, such as dyes, fragrances, flavors and some cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients," explained Jérémie Blache, Pili's CEO
adding that the company is the first to offer petroleum-free aromatic raw material on an industrial scale
To sustainably produce a source of aromatic compounds
Pili uses industrial fermentation based on its proprietary microorganisms
Fermentation makes it possible to avoid fossil raw materials by using non-food sugars derived from biomass
several tons of the 90% purity aniline derivative have already been produced at industrial grade which is already REACh registered and ready to be commercialized as an intermediate
"Anthranilic acid is a very interesting platform molecule
the chemistry accessible from this intermediate is wide," commented Guillaume Boissonnat-Wu
"Pili is able to develop all or part of the synthesis pathways from this intermediate towards references of dyes
all based on the principles of green chemistry."
Pili plans to collaborate with partners interested in co-developing ingredients derived from aromatics chemistry and committed to decarbonizing their product portfolios

This study developed a three-dimensional ultrastructural analysis application using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) to investigate surgically acquired human skin tissues containing the arrector pili muscle
as well as the embedding using a carbon-based conductive resin
The results revealed dense nerve fiber networks branching from nearby nerve fiber bundles outside the muscle and running among muscle fibers
the dense nerve network running through and along arrector pili muscle fibers rarely penetrates the connective tissues between smooth muscle fibers and epithelial cells
no individual smooth muscle fibers formed adhesion structures with the epithelial cells of the hair follicle
ending in the dermal extracellular matrix near the epithelial cells
These results indicate the usefulness of this approach for three-dimensional ultrastructural analyses of human skin tissues comprising follicular units and revealing structural changes in skin tissues
especially the arrector pili muscle and nerve fibers with hair follicular epithelium
especially whether and how it contacts the hair
remains unclear due to the difficulty of observing this complex three-dimensional (3D) organ in situ
This study developed an application of the 3D ultrastructural analysis using SBF-SEM to examine surgically acquired human facial skin tissues containing vellus hairs and APM and to address the above questions
The present results indicate that our 3D ultrastructural analysis of human skin tissues can help reveal the unexplored ultrastructural characteristics of the APM
including their interactions with nerve fibers and the follicular epithelium

(i) Graph illustrating the shortest distance between each muscle fiber and the epithelium
This study applied 3D ultrastructural analysis using SBF-SEM to investigate the human skin tissue and the spatial distribution and interactions of APM
and follicular epithelium at the ultrastructural level
Our findings revealed that nerve fibers formed dense networks branching from nearby dermal nerve bundles and running among APM fibers
with rare connective tissue penetration surrounding them
APM fibers did not form adhesion structures with hair follicle epithelial cells but ended in the dermal extracellular matrix
These results indicate the usefulness of this approach for the 3D ultrastructural analysis of human skin tissues and their follicular units and the potential for revealing changes in APM and nerve fibers associated with hair follicles in aging and diseases
such as its observational nature and the unknown follicle cycle stage; thus
this suggests a dynamic regulatory system in humans where physical connections
may be formed during specific phases of the hair follicle cycle
there may be differences in physical connections among species or body areas as the current study focused on the vellus hairs in human facial skin
Future studies are warranted to address these possibilities and understand the interactions between nerve branches of the APM and the hair follicles
A direct interaction may be more evident at early developmental stages than in older humans
Understanding variations and/or changes in the interactions between APM and hair follicles may help understand hair pathology and develop effective solutions to hair diseases

the International University of Health and Welfare
and the National Institute for Physiological Sciences approved this study (C02208
which was conducted in compliance with the ethical guidelines for life science and medical research involving human subjects
was prepared from the surplus forehead skin excised during plastic surgery on a 20-year-old woman
The sample was fixed by immersion in 2.5% glutaraldehyde and 2% paraformaldehyde in 0.1 M phosphate buffer over a few nights
The sample was immersed in the fixative as soon after excision as possible
and the time between excision and immersion was about 10 min
the resin blocks were transferred onto rivets for imaging
and ~ 1 μm thick sections from each block were transferred to glass slides for light microscopic observation with an optical microscope (BX-63; Olympus Japan Co.)
The block containing the identified APM was trimmed
and its surface was treated with gold sputtering to increase block conductivity
The block was then imaged with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (Merlin
with Gemini II column and field-emission electron gun) equipped with 3View
Inc.) but not with focal charge compensation
We acquired 561 serial EM images at a 6.5 nm/pixel resolution and 80 nm/slice thickness from the middle region of the APM
and 1,014 serial EM images at a 7 nm/pixel resolution and 70 nm/slice thickness from the APM end interacting with the hair follicle
which measures the minimal distance between the surfaces of object pairs

“Kerry was always respectful and quiet, but on the ice, she wasn’t afraid of anything,” childhood friend and fellow Alaska sports legend Scotty Gomez said in a statement. “She was the real deal.”
Freddy Hamilton III helped make Craig High School a powerhouse basketball program during his four years. From 2001-2003, he spearheaded Panthers teams that dominated the Region V 3A level, finishing as state runner-ups in 2002 and state champions in 2003. Hamilton was named to the Region V 3A All-Tournament Team for three straight years and the State All-Tournament Team as a junior and senior.
“Freddy was one of your first two-way players, an exceptional point guard/forward who made it very difficult for the opposing team to guard him,” former Craig assistant coach James Mackie said in a statement.
Rachel Johnson was a three-sport standout at Nikiski High School, where her list of accomplishments included receiving multiple First-Team All-State honors in volleyball and basketball and shining as a goalkeeper in soccer. She continued to shine on the pitch in college at Highline College, where she set a school record with an 11-game shutout streak, and then at Washington State University, where she helped lead the Cougars to big wins against nationally ranked opponents.
“Rachel’s leadership stands out as a primary reason for our fond memories,” her former coach Scott Anderson said in a statement. “She made us a team, not just a group of individuals.”
“Luke’s leadership on the field was unparalleled; he always led from the front,” his coach Jake Doth said in a statement.
“Tobin was a floor general who made everyone around him better,” Grace Christian coach Jason Boerger said in a statement. “His assists reflect his unselfishness and team-first mentality. He valued team success over individual accolades, and that’s what made him stand out.”
“His relentless work ethic and focus distinguish him as a Hall of Fame athlete,” former coach Randy Magner said.
Nathan Schwartzbauer was a four-sport standout at Colony whose list of accomplishments includes earning All-Conference and All-State honors in football, winning back-to-back state titles in track and field in the high jump and helping lead the hockey team to back-to-back state championships as well.
“Nathan is one of the best athletes I’ve ever had the honor to coach,” his hockey coach Eric Troisi said in a statement. “His athletic ability, combined with his work ethic, helped make Colony High School one of the best hockey teams in the state.”
Pauline Tufi was a five-sport star at West Anchorage High School, where she shined especially bright in softball, earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors for three straight years from 2011-2013. She also starred in hockey, volleyball, basketball and track and field before taking her talent to Louisiana Tech University to continue playing softball.
“Pauline was not just an athlete; she was a game-changer. She brought leadership and determination to every team she joined,” West girls basketball coach Stanley Engel said in a statement. “Her impact extended beyond her athleticism — her heart, leadership, and work ethic made her a true pillar in our community.”
Stan Harris was a stalwart teacher, mentor and leader in music education at Palmer High School whose contributions included music programs ranging from jazz bands, choirs and musical theater productions that consistently received top honors and statewide acclaim.
“Stan’s ability to teach both band and choir at the highest levels is unmatched,” former Wasilla music teacher Sara Guhl said in a statement. “His kindness, flexibility, and guidance for students is unparalleled.”
Nathan Vereide’s contributions in the activity of Drama, Debate, and Forensics (DDF) were legendary. He served as a coach at Whitestone School from 1997 to 2015. His teams amassed 31 overall school sweepstakes titles in the 1A/2A/3A categories, including just one of two ever undefeated debate seasons in 2011.
“Nathan’s leadership on the team was unmatched,” fellow coach Shawn Brisco said in statement. “His dedication to both the success of his students and to improving the activity itself made him a key figure in the growth of DDF in Alaska.”

Tennessee inside linebacker Keenan Pili is out for the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL, Vols’ head coach Josh Heupel announced on Monday afternoon
Pili suffered the injury on Florida’s opening drive during the Vols’ 23-17 overtime win over the Gators on Saturday night at Neyland Stadium
The super senior linebacker went to the injury tent immediately and quickly went to the locker room afterwards
He returned to the sideline in crutches with a large brace on is right knee for the rest of the game
Despite missing almost the entirety of the Florida game
Pili is still tied as Tennessee’s leading tackler with 29 tackles to this point in the season
Injury luck has been brutal for Pili in his two seasons at Tennessee
suffering a season-ending collarbone injury in the Vols’ 2023 season-opener against Virginia before suffering another injury halfway through the 2024 season
“I’m not sure there’s a better representative of what a Volunteer is than Keenan Pili,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said. “You talk about a selfless guy that cares about the people around him way more than he cares about himself
Pili’s college career is now over barring NCAA surprisingly giving him more eligibility
Jeremiah Telander will step into a starting spot besides fellow sophomore Arion Carter
Junior linebacker Kalib Perry and redshirt freshman Jalen Smith will also see increased roles for the rest of the season
Telander has played an abundance of snaps so far this season as Pili’s backup and has performed well in them

2024Dimond quarterback Cayden Pili runs the ball during a 14-7 win over West during the state Division I football championship on Oct
(Loren Holmes / ADN) After leading the Dimond High football team to its first Alaska state championship in 23 years
junior Cayden Pili on Friday became just the second player in program history to be named Gatorade Alaska Football Player of the Year
“I’m very grateful and honored to receive this award,” Pili said in a statement
“It’s pretty cool being able to bring a GPOY award to our program
and being only the second for football is pretty cool.”
The dynamic dual-threat quarterback and tenacious defensive back joins an elite contingent of student-athletes to receive this prestigious honor — including his older sister
who was a three-time recipient during her illustrious prep career at Dimond
She went on to have a decorated collegiate basketball career
was selected in the first round of the 2024 WNBA by the Minnesota Lynx and flew home to present her younger brother with the state championship trophy after the Lynx topped West for the Division I title
“I’m glad I could join the elite club of athletes before me
especially my sister who was three-time GPOY,” Pili stated
‘Congrats and welcome to the club lol,’ but I just want to thank God
teammates and coaches for supporting me along the way.”
The award not only recognizes a student-athlete for their incredible feats of athleticism on the gridiron
it also acknowledges exceptional academic achievement and exemplary character displayed on and off the field
Pili maintained a 3.29 GPA and volunteered locally building and donating beds for needy children in Alaska
Pili was a dominant force on both sides of the ball for the Lynx this past fall but especially on offense
where he compiled 2,694 yards of total offense last season in 11 games with 1,744 coming as passer and the other 950 coming as a runner
He scored a combined 40 touchdowns: 18 through the air with his arm and a whopping 22 coming on the ground with his legs
he was responsible for both of Dimond’s touchdowns
which came in the first half of a low-scoring affair
“We are all hugely excited at Cayden being named Gatorade Player of the Year,” Dimond head coach Brian Yim said in a statement

Type IV pili (T4P) are versatile proteinaceous protrusions that mediate diverse bacterial processes
we reported the presence of a unique Type IV class C pilus
we sought to functionalize the role of Tad pili in the pathogenicity of A
Through a comprehensive comparative genomics analysis of 170 A
the conserved presence of the Tad operon in vAh isolates was confirmed
suggesting its potential contribution to pathogenicity
the entire Tad operon was knocked out from A
hydrophila ML09-119 to elucidate its specific role in A
The absence of the Tad operon did not affect growth kinetics but significantly reduced virulence in catfish fingerlings
highlighting the essential role of the Tad operon during infection
hydrophila ML09-119 was significantly decreased in the Tad operon deletant
Absence of the Tad operon had no effect on sensitivity to other environmental stressors
it was more sensitive to low pH conditions
Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the Tad mutant had a rougher surface structure during log phase growth than the wildtype strain
indicating the absence of Tad impacts the outer surface of vAh during cell division
of which the biological consequences are unknown
These findings highlight the role of Tad in vAh pathogenesis and biofilm formation
signifying the importance of T4P in bacterial infections
the precise functions of the T4P have not been investigated previously
serves as a bridge that facilitates interaction between the pathogen and its host during infection
This study aimed to delineate the function of Tad pili in vAh isolate ML09-119
We conducted an expanded comparative genomics analysis involving 170 A
hydrophila genomes sourced from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)
confirming the consistent presence of the Tad gene cluster in vAh genomes
We constructed a mutant strain with complete deletion of the Tad operon and investigated its contribution to virulence in catfish
hydrophila physiology and response to environmental stress was determined
These results revealed the significant role of Tad pili in the virulence of vAh isolate ML09-119
highlighting its crucial function in mediating pathogenic interactions
The phylogenetic tree for 170 genomes was build out of a core of 1893 genes per genome
The core has 1711702 AA-residues/bp per genome

Escherichia coli strains CC118 λpir and BW19851 were used for cloning and conjugation purposes
and suicide plasmid pMEG-375 was used to transfer gene mutations into A
Brain heart infusion (BHI) agar and broth (Difco
Luria–Bertani (LB) agar and broth (Difco) were used for E
the following antibiotics and reagents (Sigma-Aldrich
USA) were used in the given concentrations: colistin (12.5 μg/mL)
Table 2 Bacterial strains and plasmids used in the present study
hydrophila Tad operon mutant was designated as vAhΔtad
Table 3 Primers used to generate and verify in-frame deletion of vAh Tad operon
All fish experiments were conducted under a protocol approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at Mississippi State University. Virulence of vAhΔtad was compared to A. hydrophila ML09-119 wild-type strain (vAh-WT) by immersion route of exposure as described previously (Abdelhamed et al., 2016)
specific-pathogen-free (SPF) channel catfish fingerlings (13.54 ± 0.54 cm
15.32 ± 1.98 g) were stocked into twelve 40-liter flow-through tanks (14 fish/tank) and acclimated for a week
Tanks were assigned randomly to three treatment groups: vAhΔtad
Fish were fed twice daily with a commercial catfish feed
and water temperature was maintained at 30°C (±2) throughout the experiments
the water levels in each tank were decreased to 5 L
and 100 mL of overnight culture were added directly to each tank (1.9 × 109 CFU/mL water)
Negative control (sham-infected group) tanks were treated similarly
but exposed to 100 mL of sterile BHI broth
Fish mortalities were recorded daily for 7 days
and cumulative percent mortality calculated for each group
Growth kinetics of vAhΔtad and vAh-WT in BHI broth were compared
bacterial growth curves were generated by measuring the optical density at 600nm (OD600) on a multimode reader (BioTek Cytation 5) every half an hour for 72 h at 30°C
The growth assays were conducted in two independent experiments
each with 24 replicates for vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains
Biofilm formation of the vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains were compared using a microtiter plate assay
Five different colonies of each strain were cultured to log-phase (OD600 = 0.6 ± 0.05) at 28°C in BHI broth and diluted to OD600 of 0.1 using freshly prepared media
A 100 µL of the diluted cultures were added into a 96-well plate and incubated at 28°C overnight
Sterile BHI media (100 µL) was added to the blank control wells
8 replicate wells were used for each treatment and the control group
the bacteria were discarded by turning the plate over and shaking out the liquid
then gently submerging the plate in a tub of water
The washing step was repeated twice to remove any unbound bacteria and media before staining
125 µL of crystal violet (CV) (0.1%) was added and the plate was incubated at room temperature for 15 min
the microtiter plate was rinsed 3-4 times by submerging in sterile water as described above
followed by vigorous blotting on a stack of paper to remove any unbound bacteria and dye
The plate was air-dried and 125 µL of 95% ethanol was added to each well to solubilize the CV
The plate was incubated for 15 min and the solubilized CV was transferred to a new flat bottom microtiter plate and absorbance was measured at 595nm
The biofilm assay was conducted with 35 biological replicates for both vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains
The vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains were cultured to log-phase (OD600 = 0.6 ± 0.05) at 28°C in BHI broth

Each motility assay was conducted with 7 independent biological replicates
with 3 technical replicates per biological replicate
for both the vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains
The ability of the vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains to withstand extreme temperatures was evaluated
Both strains were cultured to log phase (OD600 = 0.6 ± 0.05) at 28°C and then adjusted to an OD600 of 0.1 using sterile BHI broth
The bacterial suspension was subsequently incubated at 18°C
the cultures were washed twice with sterile phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and spread on BHI agar plates for colony counting and statistical analysis
The temperature assay was conducted with 4 biological replicates for both vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains
Viable bacteria were quantified by spreading on BHI agar plates after serially diluting
The two strains’ percent viability (CFUs/mL) was calculated and compared
The acid-alkali stress assay was conducted with 3 biological replicates for both vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains
Under optimal growth conditions at 28°C
the vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains were cultured to log-phase with an optical density of 0.6 ± 0.05 at 600nm
and resuspended in fresh BHI broth containing 0.5 M sodium chloride (NaCl)
200 μL of each bacterial suspension was dispensed into separate wells of a 96-well microplate
200 μL of sterile BHI broth was added
Growth was monitored every 1 h for 16 h at 28°C in an automatic microplate reader using absorbance at 600nm
The osmotic stress assay was conducted with four biological replicates for both vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains
To evaluate the viability of the strains against environmental oxidants
both vAhΔtad and vAh-WT strains were cultured to log-phase (OD600 = 0.6 ± 0.05) at 28°C in BHI broth
Bacterial pellets were collected and washed twice with sterile PBS solution before treatment with 0.1M hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

Amidst the dynamics of host-pathogen interactions
pathogens are driven to persistently evolve
and evade the host’s immune defenses
These adaptations often occur by acquiring unique genes
and systems through horizontal gene transfer
which leaves a distinct imprint on the pathogen’s genetic makeup
Comparative genomics allows identification of these unique genetic adaptations
which can be specific for a bacterial species or for a genetic lineage within a species
hydrophila is a genetically diverse species that has many unique lineages with varied environmental adaptations
These analyses also support the notion that U.S
and Chinese vAh isolates originated from the same monophyletic clade
in silico analysis confirmed previous findings that vAh isolates consistently carry the Tad operon
In vAh ML09-119, a set of 13 Tad genes organized within an operon structure were identified (Figure 1). The function of Tad in vAh was investigated through the generation of a knockout mutant that encompassed the entire operon. Compared to the wild-type strain, there was significantly reduced mortality in catfish fingerlings exposed to vAhΔtad indicating the Tad operon plays a critical role in the virulence of A. hydrophila ML09-119 (Figure 3A)
This finding is consistent with the role of the Tad operon in diverse host-pathogen systems
hydrophila isolated from human cases remains a subject for future investigation
It is thought the Tad operon may provide a competitive edge by facilitating niche adaptation
allowing the pathogen to persist in diverse environments
In A. hydrophila ML09-119, the Tad operon has higher GC content (64.82%) than the average for the rest of the genome (60.82%) (Figure 1)
suggesting acquisition from horizontal transfer
vAh isolates consistently encode the Tad operon while exhibiting the absence of any type III secretion system (T3SS) (data not shown here)
This suggests the mechanism of pathogenesis for vAh
particularly how vAh manipulates function of host cells
is quite different from pathogens that utilize T3SS to inject effector proteins directly into host cells
and Tad may be an important adaptation in the absence of T3SS
Tad pili may function as a sensor regulator for low pH
inducing expression of other adaptive mechanisms
or it may directly mediate resistance to low pH
It is possible the bacterial surface alterations in vAhΔtad impacted host cell adhesion and/or induction of virulence mechanisms through signaling pathways resulting in reduced virulence
these investigations into the function of Tad pili in vAh isolate A
hydrophila ML09-119 provides valuable insights into its role in virulence and environmental adaptation
Comparative genomic analysis confirmed the consistent presence of the Tad operon in the vAh subclade of A
suggesting Tad is essential for vAh virulence in catfish
biofilm formation and resistance to acid stress
This work highlights the multifaceted role of Tad pili in A
The presence of the Tad operon in some human A
hydrophila isolates suggests it may contribute to pathogenesis in humans as well
these findings demonstrate a clear role of Tad pili in contributing to virulence of vAh in catfish
which is one of the most important diseases affecting catfish aquaculture in the southeastern United States
Further investigation is warranted to delineate the role of Tad pili in vAh pathogenesis and explore its potential for treatment and prevention of motile Aeromonas septicemia

Josh Heupel didn’t provide an answer for who will be taking over Keenan Pili’s “green dot” communication helmet in the wake of Pili’s season-ending injury against Florida
Heupel was non-committal in Tennessee’s choice because the Vols have not quite figured that out
haven’t finalized that,” Heupel said on Monday as the Vols began the new week of practices
Could be (Jeremiah) Telander that takes that one.”
The NCAA passed a rule last spring allowing teams to have one player on offense
and one on special teams wear a communication helmet
labeled with a green dot on the back of the helmet
Coaches can communicate with players before the play
coach-to-player communication is cut off with either 15 seconds left on the play clock or the snap of the ball
Tennessee veteran Keenan Pili was the Vols’ designated defensive helmet communicator throughout the season but suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Florida this past weekend
Pili has been productive for Tennessee and is currently tied as the Vols’ leading tackler despite barely playing against Florida (29 total tackles)
Pili and fellow starting linebacker Arion Carter combined for 62% of Tennessee’s linebacker snaps before the Florida game
With Pili’s departure early in the game on Saturday
Tennessee turned to linebacker Jeremiah Telander for a bulk of Pili’s work
Telander averaged 17 snaps per game against Oklahoma and Arkansas but more than tripled that workload against Florida in Pili’s absence (67 snaps)
Carter and Telander combined for 69 percent of Tennessee’s linebacker snaps against Florida
It’s no surprise that Tennessee’s coaching staff is looking at one of those two players to be the next helmet communicator
Tennessee linebacker Kalib Perry also saw a significant increase in workload against the Gators with Pili out
Perry averaged just 8.5 snaps per game against Oklahoma and Arkansas but saw 35 snaps against the Gators on Saturday
Tennessee linebacker Jalen Smith also saw a higher snap count against Florida
but not as much of an increase as Telander and Perry
Here’s a look at the snap count for all five Tennessee linebackers through the first six games of the season, courtesy of Pro Football Focus:

The Seahawks made a pair of roster moves on Monday afternoon
and signed nose tackle Brandon Pili back to the practice squad
Mabry has been in the Seahawks organization ever since he was signed as an undrafted free agent in the 2020 offseason
Mabry has floated between the practice squad
active roster and waivers for pretty much his entire career to this point
He was elevated to the active 53-man roster prior to the Week 11 game against the 49ers due to injuries at the position to Noah Fant and Brady Russell
and his only NFL stats came in 2022 when he caught one pass for seven yards for a touchdown
Brandon Pili was claimed on waivers himself last week from the Miami Dolphins

Tim Banks watched how Keenan Pili handled himself for the past year
The Tennessee football defensive coordinator was proud then as the linebacker worked through an injury in his first season with the Vols
He’s even more proud now watching Pili fly around the field for the Vols
“For him to finally see the fruits of his efforts
I feel like a proud dad to finally see him go out there and do what he did,” Banks said Tuesday

PILI: Why Keenan Pili decided to return to Tennessee football in 2024 after season-ending injury
Pili was at BYU for five seasons before transferring to UT
He redshirted as a freshman in 2016 before he served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Orlando
but suffered a torn ACL early in the 2021 season which afforded him another season
Arion Carter are Tennessee’s inside linebackersSophomore Arion Carter is Pili’s partner at inside linebacker for the Vols
The former high school running back has made six tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup
Banks lauded Carter’s improving football IQ as he moved to linebacker
“To see the growth that he has at linebacker has been amazing for me,” Banks said
He’s always played hard but him being able to play a step quicker because he understands how offenses are trying to attack us."
234-pound Carter made 17 tackles in eight games as a freshman in 2023
Carter was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class out of Smyrna High School
He was committed to Middle Tennessee initially as a running back before opening up his recruitment and landing at Tennessee
“Tennessee losing a huge veteran presence on the defensive side,” ESPN sideline reporter Kris Budden said
“I’ve just been told Keenan Pili is out for the remainder of the game with a lower-body injury
I am watching him walk to the locker room right now under his own power
It’s not good news for Tennessee on the defensive side.”

Pili is one of the most experienced players in all of college football, originally being a member of the 2016 recruiting class. Five seasons were spent with the BYU Cougars before entering the NCAA transfer portal and landing with Tennessee. The linebacker is now in his second season with the Volunteers, his seventh overall.
Not many programs have a player with that much time on the field they are able to rely on. Tennessee’s defense has been one of the best this season and Pili is a huge reason why. Not having him out there against Florida is going to be a huge blow.

Tennessee was nearly unrivaled in offensive production through the first three weeks of the season
Averaging 63 points against non-conference opponents, that scoring total has been cut in half and then some since the Vols started SEC play. Held to 25 points against Oklahoma in a conference-opening win, Josh Heupel’s squad scored just 14 points during the loss to Arkansas in Week 6
Ahead of their matchup against Florida at home, Tim Tebow attempted to get a pulse on the Tennessee offense. He looked toward the stat sheet for evidence that the Vols have fallen off track since SEC play began.
“This team started so hot,” Tebow said during an appearance on SportsCenter on Saturday morning ahead of SEC Nation. “Non-conference, they were dominating. 639 yards per game, but in-conference, yeah, you cut that by 300. That’s not the same team that’s been playing the last few weeks, and they’re just not on the same page.”

(Alika Jenner | AP) Minnesota Lynx forward Alissa Pili (35) in action during a WNBA basketball game
Former Ute and now Minnesota Lynx forward Alissa Pili has signed an endorsement deal with Nike’s N7 brand
N7 has supported Native American and Indigenous athletes through various Nike brand initiatives
and a descendant of the Inupiat tribe in Alaska
Pili will join famous Nike athletes like Olympic hammer thrower Janee’ Kassanavoid
and Dallas Mavericks star point guard Kyrie Irving
whose mother was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and is currently playing in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics
“I’m so honored to join the Nike Family as an N7 athlete,” Pili said in a statement. “Representation is important to me, and I look forward to making an impact in the league and demonstrating to all the Indigenous and Polynesian girls who love the game that they can reach their dreams.”
Pili’s journey started off in Alaska, where she lived in the small town of Barrow (now called Utqiagvik) before committing and playing at USC for three seasons. For her final two seasons, the forward transferred to the Utes in Salt Lake City in search of more playing time.
In 2023-24, Pili’s final season of collegiate eligibility, she averaged 21.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 55% from the field. Pili’s performance landed her Second Team All-American honors from The Athletic and guided Utah women’s basketball to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
After finishing her career with the Utes, Pili was selected No. 8 overall by the Lynx. In her rookie season she has continued being an advocate both on and off the court for Indigenous athletes and communities.
Following Minnesota’s contest vs. the Phoenix Mercury on June 7, Pili connected and met with various Indigenous leaders in Arizona. She also wore a commemorative tribal dress in honor of her Polynesian roots at the 2024 WNBA draft.
Through the N7 initiative, Nike says it has helped donate $11 million to nearly 300 organizations over the past 15 years. Pili will look to extend that legacy by continuing to build her own brand on the Lynx and in the WNBA.

Work generated by self-propelled bacteria can be harnessed with the help of microdevices
may exhibit unidirectional rotational or translational motion
Swimming bacteria that propel with the help of actively rotating flagella are a prototypical example of active agents that can power such microdevices
we propose a computational model of a micron-sized turbine powered by bacteria that rely on active type IV pili appendages for surface-associated motility
We find that the turbine can rotate persistently over a time scale that significantly exceeds the characteristic times of the single cell motility
The persistent rotation is explained by the collective dynamics of multiple pili of groups of cells attaching to and pulling on turbine
we show that the turbine can rotate permanently in the same direction by altering the pili binding to the turbine surface in an asymmetric fashion
We thus can show that by changing the adhesive properties of the turbine while keeping its symmetric geometry
we can still break the symmetry of its rotation
this study widely expands the range of bacteria that can be used to power nanofabricated microdevices
due to high pili forces generated by pili retraction
promises to push the harnessed work by several orders of magnitude
Overview of the computational model of bacteria driving a rotatable turbine by attachment of type IV pili
(A) Sketch of how pili binding and retraction can lead to a force acting on a cell
Cells are located in a box together with the rotatable turbine
The cells possess pili which they use for the motility on the substrate and for attachment to the turbine
The turbine center is located at r(turb) and has an orientation defined by the angle α
(C) Summary of all forces acting on the cells and turbine
Friction forces with the environment (surrounding liquid and substrate) are not shown
we are asking if cells with type IV pili that can create so large forces might be more attractive candidates to power microdevices
we study the dynamics of a rotatable turbine immersed in a bath of twitching bacteria
We investigate how the turbine rotation is affected by the binding and unbinding of the bacterial pili
due to the adhesion of multiple pili to the turbine over time scales that can strongly exceed the characteristic time scales of the individual pili attachment
the turbine can persistently rotate in one direction over extensive durations
While these persistent rotations have a limited lifetime
one can engineer a system where they become permanently unidirectional by introducing asymmetric binding of the pili to the turbine
First, we introduce the computational model of twitching bacteria and their interactions with a turbine. A related version of this computational model was considered previously to describe bacterial surface motility [19] and bacterial aggregates [23–25]
This also enables us to only consider a simpler two-dimensional system
The experimental system we are mimicking are bacterial cells confined in a box with the turbine at its center (see Figure 1B)
The cells can move over the substrate via pili binding and unbinding and additionally interact with the turbine by pili attachment and excluded volume effects
While Neisseria gonorrhoeae cells typically have a diplococcus shape [27], we simplify the in silico cell shape of bacteria as two-dimensional circular disks with a radius R. Please note, however, that a diplococcus shape can be also considered [19, 23–25]. Each cell possesses exactly Np pili that are homogeneously distributed on the cell outline (see Figure 1A)
We approximate pili as straight lines connecting two points: their start point (also called anchor point)
The distance between these two points is called the contour length lc of the pilus
The turbine is described by Nturb × 2 disks (with radius R) arranged in a double row array (see Figure 1B). Since the only way how the turbine can move is by rotation, the relative locations of the turbine disks towards each other are fixed. The orientation of the turbine is described by the angle α with respect to the y-axis and the turbine center is located at the position r(turb) (see Figure 1B)
Initially, a pilus protrudes with the velocity vp in a direction perpendicular to the cell surface. When a pilus reaches a specific length, drawn from an exponential length distribution with mean length lp [17, 18]
it starts to retract with a velocity vr(0)
This retraction continues until the pilus has a contour length lc = 0
a new pilus protrudes from the cell from the same position
A pilus binds stochastically to the substrate or the turbine disks, independently whether it is protruding or retracting. In both cases, a pilus can only bind with its tip and it can bind only to either the substrate or the turbine disks. After binding, a pilus immediately starts to retract [28]
The binding is modeled as a Poisson process with the binding rate κatt(sub) to the substrate and κatt(turb) to any of the turbine disks
they first need to be long enough to reach the substrate with their tips
this leads to a delay in the initial binding event of a newly protruding pilus
but is less relevant for following attachments of pili
the binding rate might be smaller to allow a pilus to protrude to reach the substrate
pili that bind to the substrate the first time do so with a rate κatt(sub,0)=vp/lp
the binding is modelled as a Poisson process
The rate κatt(sub,0) corresponds to the binding of a pilus that protrude with the velocity vp until it reaches a length determined by an exponential distribution with mean length lp
An attached pilus will generate a pulling force that acts on the cell and
Each pilus is modeled as a Hookean spring with the spring constant kp
a pilus is stretched due to its retraction and hence
This force is proportional to the difference between the contour length lc and the length of the pilus that it would have if it was not attached
we consider the case where a pilus can only generate a pulling force and no pushing force
it has been shown that the pilus force affects the retraction velocity by
with the stalling force Fs [22]
The force of a pilus also affects the unbinding from the substrate
Pilus detachment is modelled by a Poisson process with the rate
for detachment from the substrate, as motivated by [18]
we introduce the detachment times τdet(sub,1) and τdet(sub,2) and the detachment forces Fdet(sub,1) and Fdet(sub,2)
we describe the rate by a simpler relation
with the detachment time τdet(turb) and detachment force Fdet(turb). We picked a different expression for the pili-turbine detachment (in comparison to the pili-substrate detachment) because in general, the turbine does not necessarily have to consist of the same material as the substrate, which determines pili binding properties [16, 17]
we will explore turbine rotation in dependence on pili-turbine interactions
thus favouring a simpler single exponential form
We model pili as Hookean springs with the spring constant kp. For a cell i at location ri(cell), an attached pilus j causes a force Fi(pilusj) at the pilus anchor point ri(anchorj) on the surface of the cell in the direction of the point ri(attj) where the pilus tip is attached (see Figure 1C)
In the overdamped limit [29]
a force mediates a translational motion of the cell with the velocity
and the torque leads to a rotation with the angular velocity vector
we introduce the translational mobility μt and the rotational mobility μr
The same forces and torques cause an equivalent displacement of the pili anchor points ri(anchorj) and attachment points ri(attj) in case of attachment to a turbine disk
The mobilities introduced here are a result of friction with the viscous solvent and the substrate on which the cells are moving
The turbine is only able to undergo rotational motion
The total torque acting on the turbine is given by
The rotation of the turbine is modelled in the overdamped limit with a mobility μturb
2.5 Parameters and Details of Numerical Solution
We do not expect that this is a problem in our system due to the stochastic nature of the pili binding and unbinding
which basically represents our system as a series of many short time events
continuously interrupted by rearrangements in the pili network
we do not expect any differences in the qualitative outcome of the simulations
If not stated otherwise, we use the parameters provided in Table 1
Most parameters we use are based on previous studies
The excluded volume spring constants k(c−c)
k(turb) and k(wall) have no effect on the simulation outcome as long as they are chosen large enough to be able to compete with the pili forces
we do not expect a qualitative difference in the results of the simulation
We initialize the simulation by randomly distributing the cells in the box and only analyse the turbine rotation after an initialization period of 1,000 s
To calculate the angular velocity of the turbine rotation
with Δt = 0.5 s and the turbine orientation α (see Figure 1B)
we first demonstrate that bacteria binding to the turbine with the help of pili can cause a persistent turbine rotation over time scales that exceed the pili detachment times significantly
we study how the persistent turbine rotation depends on the binding properties of the pili to the turbine and the number of cells in the system
This allows us to unravel the underlying mechanism that causes the persistent rotation of the turbine
we propose a system where an asymmetric binding of the pili to the turbine causes a permanent unidirectional rotation of the turbine
we compute the angular mean squared displacement (angular MSD)
where trajectories of the angle α move persistently in one direction over periods of hundreds to thousands of seconds before the rotation turns towards the opposite direction
implying that while the rotation is persistent over a certain time scale
for larger time intervals it becomes random again
To learn more about how persistent the turbine rotation is
we compute the angular velocity autocorrelation function (angular velocity ACF)
Independently of whether pili can bind to the turbine or not, we find that the correlation function ν(Δt) is decaying with time (see Figure 2D)
This confirms our previous observation for the angular MSD where we found that for very large time differences the turbine rotation is diffusive and no longer shows signs of persistence
We also find that for τdet(turb)=50s
the normalised angular velocity ACF ν(Δt)/ν(0) has the slowest decay
This behaviour correlates with the persistent rotation for time differences between Δt ≈ 10
we find that the decay of the angular velocity ACF is faster for τdet(turb)=2s than for the case where pili do not bind to the turbine
We will provide an explanation for this behaviour in Section 3.3
we will have a closer look at how the turbine rotation depends on the cell adhesion to the turbine disks and the number of cells in the system
We begin with a systematic analysis of how the angular MSD δα(Δt) depends on the detachment time of pili from the turbine disks τdet(turb), shown in Figure 3A
For small time differences Δt < 10 s
we find that δα is independent of τdet(turb) and exhibits a linear scaling
For high enough values of the detachment time τdet(turb) and Δt > 10 s
The duration of this superdiffusive regime increases with increasing τdet(turb) and is barely observable for detachment times τdet(turb)<10s
For even longer time differences Δt
Dependence of the turbine rotation on pili detachment time τdet(turb) and cell density ρ
(A,C) Angular mean squared displacement (angular MSD) δα(Δt) of the turbine angle α as a function of the pili-turbine detachment time τdet(turb) (with the cell density at ρ =0.1 μm2) or cell density ρ (with the detachment time τdet(turb)=50s)
(B,D) Normalised angular velocity autocorrelation function (angular velocity ACF) ν(Δt)/ν(0) of the turbine angle α as a function of the pili-turbine detachment time τdet(turb) or cell density ρ
The inset figure shows the characteristic time scale of ν(Δt)
resulting from a fit ν(Δt)∝exp−Δt/τ
To account for the initial drop of the angular velocity ACF
we only do the fitting for Δt >2s
An example fit is shown in (B) (black dashed line)
Please note that for the investigation of the cell density dependence of the turbine rotation
we only consider a smaller range of Δt to avoid too high numerical cost
we do not show the diffusive regime in the MSD for large values of Δt since the angular velocity ACF is decaying with increasing Δt
Next, we investigate the normalised angular velocity ACF ν(Δt)/ν(0) (see Figure 3B) and find that for Δt < 2 s
it exponentially decreases with the Δt
By fitting a function of the form ν(Δt)∝exp−Δt/τ to this later regime
we identify the characteristic time τ of the exponential decay of ν(Δt) and can investigate its dependence on τdet(turb)
We find that it is increasing with increasing detachment times τdet(turb)
This is in accordance with the increasing duration of the superdiffusive regime of the angular MSD
The stronger pili of a cell bind to the turbine
the more persistently the turbine rotates in one direction before it inverts its direction
the characteristic decay time τ is initially increasing with cell density ρ and then decreases when ρ increases further
we provide qualitative arguments that explain the observed behaviours
when multiple cells bind to the same region of the turbine
they will interact via excluded volume effects
This will lead to additional forces acting on the involved pili and thus
Overview of the mechanism driving the persistent rotation of the turbine
(A) A cell (light blue circle) with n =3 or n =0 pili attached to a turbine (dark blue circles)
(B) Stochastic model of n pili attached to a turbine with pili binding (with constant rate katt) and unbinding (with constant rate kdet)
(C) Mean unbinding time to reach for the first time the state n =0 in the stochastic model
kdet =(exp 1)/τoff
(D) Sketch of how turbine rotation is affected by multiple cells binding to the turbine surface
The turbine rotates in the direction in which more cells are attached to its surface (turbine is pulled by cells)
(E) Sketch of how turbine rotation leads to a pickup and binding of cells on the turbine surface
the distribution of cells on the turbine surface is re-arranged up to such a degree that the turbine can change its direction of motion
This will then lead to a diffusive regime again
This time also corresponds to the characteristic time of the angular velocity ACF decay
the turbine forgets its initial direction of motion
For cases where pili bind stronger to the turbine, we expect to not only have more pili to bind to the turbine, but also more cells to be bound to the turbine with its pili. To this aim, we check the number of cells and pili bound to the turbine as a function of time (see Supplementary Figure S2)
We find that after an initial phase of pili attachment
for larger pili-turbine detachment times τdet(turb) more cells and more pili are bound to the turbine on average
This is in agreement with our previously introduced hypothesis that the turbine exhibits persistent rotational motion due to cells that are bound to the turbine surface
Next, we consider the origin of the cell density dependent rotation of the turbine, see Figure 3C and Figure 3D. If the cell density is very small, often no cell will bind to the turbine most of the time and thus, the angular MSD is initially increasing with cell density. For moderate cell densities the difference between cells attaching to different sides of the turbine (see Figure 4D) will be significant and due to the random asymmetry
the turbine will rotate persistently in one direction until cells randomly unbind from the turbine
more and more cells are pulling in the opposite direction of the turbine rotation
A possible explanation for this is that even without pili-turbine attachment
cells can still rotate the turbine due to collisions and resulting excluded volume forces
we reproduce a system where cells push the turbine
This process possesses its own characteristic time scales that are linked to the substrate motility of the cells
the persistent rotation of the turbine originates from persistent attachment of cells to the turbine over times scales much longer than the characteristic detachment times of individual pili
While the resulting rotation is indeed persistent and
There is no asymmetry in the initial rotational direction of the turbine and even though the turbine can move in one direction over an extended time
this rotation will at some point reverse direction
we will provide an example of how cells using type IV pili can drive a permanent unidirectional rotation of a turbine
In order to produce a permanent unidirectional rotation of the turbine, an asymmetry of the turbine is required. Typically, such assymetries are created by altering the turbine geometry [7, 8, 12], but here we have a chance to exploit asymmetries in the adhesion of cells to the turbine instead. In Figure 5A, Figure 5B and Supplementary Movie S4
we provide an example of how altered pili binding properties on one side of the turbine wings can lead to a unidirectional rotation
we consider different cases: 1) pili bind stronger to the manipulated turbine disks
corresponding to a larger detachment time τdet(turb) or 2) pili bind weaker to the manipulated turbine disks
Depending on how pili bind to these regions
the direction of the turbine is affected as
cells are more or less strongly adhered to the manipulated region and thus
more or less cells are bound to these sides of the turbine and mediate the turbine rotation
the turbine rotates in the direction of manipulated region because more cells are attached there
for 2) less cells are attached in the manipulated region and the turbine rotates in the opposite direction
Unidirectional persistent turbine rotation is caused by asymmetric pili binding to the turbine
(A) Overview of the different types of turbine disks considered here
(B) Angle α of the turbine as a function of time t for different combinations of the manipulated turbine disks
We also provide the average angular velocity ⟨ω⟩ and its standard error for each condition
(C) The angular mean squared displacement exhibits superdiffusive (ballistic) scaling
(D) The normalised angular velocity auto correlation function is no longer decaying with increasing time differences Δt
corresponding to the unidirectional rotation
We see evidence that the rotation is permanently unidirectional in the angular MSD (see Figure 5C) which is superdiffusive (ballistic) for arbitrary time differences Δt, equivalent to a rotation in one direction. Additionally, the normalised angular velocity ACF (see Figure 5D) is no longer decaying with time Δt
suggesting a constant rotation in the same direction
In experiments, such manipulated regions on the surface of the turbine could be generated by coating it with a chemical such as BSA, which has been shown to alter the detachment time of the pili [17, 18, 32]
we investigated how bacteria that use type IV pili for surface motility may drive the rotation of a micron-sized turbine
We found that due to spatial asymmetries in the amount of cells that are bound to the turbine
a persistent rotation is observed over time scales that can strongly exceed the characteristic time scales of the pili
The persistent rotation is enhanced when pili bind more strongly to the turbine and weaker when the density of cells becomes larger
The observed persistent rotation of a symmetric turbine has a characteristic time scale
the rotation direction is reversed stochastically and there is no preferred direction of rotation
A persistent and unidirectional rotation can be generated by altering the binding properties of the type IV pili on parts of the turbine in an asymmetric manner
so that the only degree of freedom is the turbine rotation
The impact of this aggregation process on the turbine rotation remains unclear

CONNOR BENINTENDI
With the team’s preseason opener set for Friday
the defensive tackle from Anchorage is looking forward to making a strong impression on coaches and executives again heading into his second season in the NFL
“Preseason last year was really good for me but it’s a new season and as they say over here ‘It doesn’t really matter what you did last year
it’s what you do now.’ So I’m looking forward to and really excited for the opportunity to get to play again.”
he knows he has to maintain that hungry mind-set
Being a former undrafted free agent rarely ever comes with the same job security as a highly drafted player
the grind to move off the roster bubble begins anew
“I feel like I just kind of tweaked and adjusted to some things that I learned my rookie year but the mind-set is still the same,” Pili said
“Being an underdog from Alaska where people usually don’t make it out.”
Pilis said the biggest adjustment he had to make going from college to the pros and now heading into Year 2 has been paying more attention to detail and refining both his technique and overall approach to what it takes to be a professional athlete
“There are a lot of things from high school ball to college ball that you have to pick up on and adjust to and it’s the same from college to the NFL,” Pili said
“Everything just gets a little more technical and every little half a second counts
Every step counts so you have to be more on top of your stuff.”
The Dolphins have a “whole new defensive line group” following the loss of one of their most prominent leaders
Now Pili is learning from seasoned veterans such as future Hall of Fame defensive end Calais Campbell who came into the league in 2008 and is entering his 17th season
“He’s got a lot of ball knowledge and things we can kind of pick up from.”
Miami also brought in a new defensive coordinator in Anthony Weaver
where he served as a defensive coach and assistant head coach
“It’s been a process just learning a new defense and everything but I think coach Weaver is a really good dude
and I like his defensive philosophy and I like him as a person,” Pili said
The Dolphins didn’t rotate their interior defensive linemen much last year with both Wilkins and fellow veteran stalwart Zach Seiler having played 78 percent or more of the team’s total defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Reference
the Ravens rotated their defensive lineman so often that the highest percentage of total snaps for any player was second-time All Pro and Pro Bowler Justin Madubuike at 65 percent
Madubuike still managed to lead all interior defensive linemen in the league with a career-high 13 sacks
“It’s been really fun getting to know coach Weaver and playing in his defense,” Pili said
Pili’s first year in the league was filled with fond memories that he’ll cherish forever
At the top of his list was taking his first snap in a regular-season game that came in the season-opener on the road in a place he is very familiar with
The Dolphins played the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium
which is less than half an hour from where he played his college home games at the University of Southern California for the Trojans
”That was pretty cool and a big moment,” Pili said
What made his NFL debut even more special was the fact that several members of his family were in attendance
“It was nice and it was surreal just having my mom there,” Pili said
“I met up with them after the game and they were just excited and proud.”
The Dolphins were the team featured on last year’s in-season version of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” which was a “pretty cool experience” for Pili in his first year in the league
“Obviously being a rookie and not getting too much playing time
I didn’t get a lot of camera time but it was pretty cool just to see how we go about our daily stuff as professional athletes being out there so my family got to watch and see a little bit of what I go through on a day-to-day basis,” he said
While Pili wasn’t heavily featured in the docuseries
he could be seen sitting front and center for every team meeting when head coach Mike McDaniel addressed everyone
you gotta put your head down and learn and do what they ask you to do so I didn’t mind it,” he said
“I know everybody has got to put in their time and pay their dues.”
he was present when Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa got signed to the biggest contract in franchise history and ever given to a Polynesian player
which meant a lot to him as a fellow member of the Pacific Islander community
“His family was over here at the facilities when it happened
and I’ve been to his house a few times and hung out with him a little bit
Pili is not the only member of his family that has gone pro in the last year. His younger sister Alissa was selected No. 8 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx in April
While he wasn’t able to share that moment with her in person due to his professional obligations
he was extremely elated for her all the same
and I was really excited for her,” Pili said
The type of media coverage she is getting now
[From Lynx to Lynx: Alissa Pili’s basketball journey comes full circle in a place that ‘was meant to be’]
He has been able to catch a few of her games in person since she was drafted
She only saw the court for a handful of minutes
but Brandon can relate to sitting behind a group of established veterans
there were a lot of good veterans ahead of me
and it’s just good to learn from them and take it all in,” Pili said
His advice to her heading into her rookie season was “there’s going to be some ups and downs but just stay the course and you’ll be alright.”
Pili was able to spend some time back home in Alaska and see family this summer during the offseason
“It’s important to have balance in everything you do,” he said
“Being away from them for so long and putting in the hours of work
it’s good to go see family and take time off
He is the oldest of eight siblings and it was “super important” to get to see them
A contingent might be coming down to the Sunshine State to watch him get extended playing time in one of the Dolphins two home preseason games
Miami will open the preseason Friday at Hard Rock Stadium against the Atlanta Falcons at 3 p.m
Pili isn’t the only player who was hails from the Last Frontier in the NFL
Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu of Palmer
Buffalo Bills linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio of Anchorage and Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Tyree Wilson of Anchorage are also in training camps
“I think it’s really cool because you don’t see (it often) and a lot of people that I’ve met don’t expect there to be football in Alaska,” Pili said
“Just seeing other people from there being a role model to the kids in Alaska and giving them hope to one day try anything.”
Pili’s advice to the next generation of young Alaskans who want to follow in the footsteps of those players and make it to the highest level of any professional sport is to have the utmost belief in themselves.
“Belief in yourself is big,” he said. “Just believe in yourself. You’ve got to work real hard and just try to create relationships that will help you get into the right field of what you’re trying to pursue.”

Pili was on the field for just two snaps before appearing to suffer a leg injury
He walked off under his own power after being examined by Tennessee trainers
then was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game
Pili is tied with Will Brooks as Tennessee’s leading tackler through the first six games of the season, with 29.0 total tackles (11 solo, 18 assists), including 1.5 tackles for loss. He also has two quarterback hits.
He had a season-high 10 tackleT in Tennessee’s 19-14 loss at Arkansas. Pili had five tackles at Oklahoma, three tackles against Kent State, four against North Carolina State and two in the opener against Chattanooga. He had 0.5 tackles for loss against NC State and 1.0 at Oklahoma.
Pili transferred to Tennessee from BYU before last season
but he was injured in the season-opening win over Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville and was lost for the season

Miami also added 16-year veteran Calais Campbell to the line
New defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s system deploys a rotation of interior linemen

she’s found joy as a rookie on a Lynx team that finds itself one game away from a WNBA championship
MINNEAPOLIS — Alissa Pili is used to being a star — the Minnesota Lynx rookie has effectively dominated every level of basketball since she was a kid
As a freshman at the University of Southern California
and in her final season at her University of Utah
she was one of the most efficient high-volume scorers in the country
averaging 21.4 points per game on 55% shooting
her on-court opportunities have been limited; she appeared in 22 games during the 2024 season
averaging 2.4 points in 6.3 minutes per outing
Going from college star to predominantly riding the bench hasn’t come without its challenges
“It’s definitely taken a toll on me mentally,” Pili told SB Nation
thanks to the unique connection and camaraderie in the Lynx locker room
and unwavering support from Cheryl Reeve and the coaching staff
“To find ways to help the team and impact the team — not only on the court — was the biggest thing for me to learn,” Pili said
still being in good communication with my coach and the team and talking to them about where my head’s at and any struggle that I go through.”
Now, Pili is headed to Game 5 of the WNBA Finals
and while she’s only checked in once in this postseason
the 23-year-old is thoroughly enjoying the journey of being apart of on one of the best teams in the world and learning from her more veteran teammates
“There’s not a lot of rookies that get to be in this position I’m in
and the fact that our team is so successful has been really fun to be a part of,” Pili said
“It’s just been a very great learning experience
Alissa Pili has shared those sentiments since she arrived to training camp just a few weeks after the conclusion of her college season
“Something that kind of caught me off guard was honestly just how well this team clicked together so fast,” Pili said
“I’ve seen it from college — any team who goes and just grabs a whole bunch of new players
it’s super hard to build that chemistry and be good right away
said she prioritizes connection and community
the fact that she felt so embraced by the locker room
and hit it off with her teammates right away
so that’s a value that I bring into what I’m doing,” Pili said
and that’s a quality that I bring to my team

rather than sulk at the limited on-court opportunities
she has embraced finding her voice in the locker room and being a positive spirit on the bench
“The biggest thing was me finding my footing with where I stand on the team and what I can do to contribute if I’m not going to be out there on the floor all the time,” Pili said
“Nobody wants somebody who’s just taking energy from the team and being pissed off that they’re on the bench.”
There was one on-court this season that gave Pili a peek into what her future in the WNBA might look like
a May 31st game against the Phoenix Mercury in which she exploded for 20 points on 7-9 shooting in just 15 minutes of action
she made all 4 of her three-point attempts

“It definitely just gives me confidence,” Pili said
“I may not be ready to compete consistently at a high level in the league yet
and have had moments where I have done well
has given me hope and confidence moving forward.”
staying positive about limited playing time hasn’t been too difficult
simply because the experience of being a Lynx has been so enjoyable

“They just let me know my time is coming.”

Everyone on Rocky Top expects great things out of first-year starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava during his career at Tennessee
According to Vols linebacker Keenan Pili
who lines up against Iamaleava every day at practice
he’s seen first-hand how talented the former five-star recruit was in high school
Pili believes he’s proven to be a bit of a locker room leader heading into his second year with the program
He’s very talented,” Pili said at SEC Media Days
“The physical part is pretty easy to see when you see Nico play
One thing I’ve seen from Nico over this offseason is really his mental side of the game and his growth as a player
“He’s really found a way to get some respect in the locker room
just his humility has drawn a lot of people to want him to lead
and I think that’s kind of been one of his greatest attributes so far and the way he leads us is through that.”
While the former blue-chip prospect didn’t see the field much during his first season in Knoxville, he made the most of his limited opportunities backing up former QB Joe Milton.
Iamaleava went on to receive the first start of his career against Iowa in the Citrus Bowl after Milton opted out of the game
ultimately defeating the Hawkeyes 35-0 having scored three rushing touchdowns on 15 attempts while going 12-of-19 passing to go with one touchdown pass and no interceptions
He finished his true freshman season with 31 completions for 314 yards and two touchdowns
leading many to become optimistic about his future and the success that may come with it
Fans were given a preview of Iamaleava’s passing skills during April’s spring game, completing his first seven of his passes for 93 yards and a touchdown during his time on the field. He capped the first half of action for his squad with a 27-yard strike to Chas Nimrod in the end zone
Iamaleava didn’t play much after the first half
and finished the gae 7 of 9 for 96 yards and the lone touchdown to Nimrod
There’s a lot to be excited about offensively for Josh Heupel’s group heading into 2024. Behind Pili and Iamaleava’s kead, Tennessee kick things off against in-state foe Chattanooga before travelling to Charlotte to play NC State inside Bank of America stadium in Wek 2.
