The National Bank of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) announced that an upgraded 500-forint bank note became legal tender on July 4
although it will not be publicly available until Feb
is to allow affected private and public parties time to “make the existing banknote accepting and processing machines and ATMs able to handle the new note.”
The 154- by 70-millimeter (6 inches by 2.76 inches) note resembles its predecessor in outward appearance with a portrait of King Ferenc Rákóczi II on the face and the castle in Sárospatak that was at one time owned by the Rákóczi family on the back
Inside Coin World: Anti-slavery token has powerful message The July 30
issue investigates an 1838 abolitionist token that not only offered a powerful message condemning slavery but also promoted the concept of equal rights for women
Setting the new note apart are its additional and improved security features
and a tactile feature are added for the first time
It is printed by the Hungarian Banknote Printing Co.
on cotton security paper manufactured by the Diósgyor Papermill
a subsidiary of the printing company.
The new note is worth approximately $1.81 in U.S
funds and will circulate alongside the one that was first issued in 1998 and upgraded in 2007
the old ones will be withdrawn from circulation
but will be able to be exchanged for another 20 years
The new 500-forint note joins the previously issued 1,000-
and completes the upgraded series begun in 2014

Sárospatak lies in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county
Even though it is not a county capital (which is Miskolc)
Sárospatak has only about 12,000 inhabitants but significant history
Sárospatak has a wonderful castle: the Rákóczi Castle
It is the most remarkable building in the city with its beautiful late Renaissance style
it is also part of the National Cultural Heritage
The castle was built in the 16th century and stands ever still
It takes part in the Nationa Castle Programme (Nemzeti Kastély- és Várprogram) this is why its renovation is due to 2018
an interesting fact about this castle is that the Hungarian 500 forint banknote displays its picture on the back and Ferenc Rákóczi’s portray on the front
The Tarn of the Megyer Mountain is a wonderful natural beauty no one should miss if they visit the area
The tarn is situated in a long-ago stone-pit surrounded by steep walls of the mountain
Tourists can walk around the little lake and take a tour in the mesmerising area where they can admire the grape plantations as well
it is a fantastic program even with smaller children because the distance is not too long or difficult to accomplish
