State Park Commission say Patrick’s Point name had racist past
By Evan Symon
The California State Park and Recreation Commission just renamed Patrick’s Point State Park in Humboldt County to “Sue-meg State Park” following calls by local and tribal leaders to change name citing it’s racist past
with many renewed calls in favor of renaming Patrick’s Point State Park following the trend
Following the George Floyd protests in 2020, these efforts gained even further support, with larger changes, such as the name change of the Squaw Valley Ski Resort and the possible name change of the city of Fort Bragg
This led to a California State Park and Recreation Commission vote last week unanimously approving the name change to the original Yurok Sue-meg State Park
with the name officially being changed over the weekend
“This genuinely historic decision represents a turning point in the relationship between tribes and the state,” said Yurok Tribal Joseph L
“I’m so glad that Sue-meg will now be referred to by its correct name
Though justice could not be served for [those] who died
And a good healing today is taking direct action to rename the park.”
in addition to being praised by the Parks Commission and Native tribes
has been defended by historians against proponents who wanted to keep the original change
“There was some opposition to the change
with many citing ‘history’ as the main reason,” explained Chris Jeffords
a historian in Memphis who has worked with many tribes to keep track of names changes in the United States
especially places that were not originally tribal.”
it’s an original Yurok name that never really went away
mixed with the fact that the person the name was replaced by turned out to be an accused murderer
It doesn’t look good and doesn’t make sense to keep it on a social
as the name could turn away visitors and tourism
giving the context of the name change.”
“It’s simply a return of the old name to stress the importance of the area to the native tribe and to replace a name steeped in controversy.”
is expected to resume tribal ceremonies soon following a few years hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic
thank God this awful injustice was fixed and maybe the day will come when we can rename other landmarks after illegals coming across the border
Very important to make these changes and ignore failing infrastructure
and free housing for migrants courtesy of working taxpayers
but perhaps you don’t realize that the Parks Comission doesn’t cover those issues
And it was respondign to voter concerns (that is
Wonder if Patrick Beegan came here legally…
I have to say I don’t understand why it would be called “Habitually Done,” but fine Patrick was a bad dude
If the name is “soo-may” why the heck would you spell it “Sue-meg”
the lower case “m,” and most importantly the bizarre spelling of “meg.” It’s not like the Yurok (Yue-reg?) were using Latin characters and we’re keeping some indigenous spelling
It’s an oral language and should be respected as such
which is the reason English language rules don’t apply
It is also not up to others outside the tribe to tell them how to spell their own words
Diverse hiking trails in forestry tree lines to the beach or along the cliffs
Spring flowers and sunsets in spring are gorgeous
Renaming Patrick’s Point State Park to its original name
is a step toward correcting a historical injustice and honoring the Yurok people
It’s heartening to see the renaming of Patrick’s Point State Park to Sue-meg State Park, honoring its Yurok roots and addressing the past injustices. A respectful recognition of history is essential for healing. On a related note, if you’re looking to sell an inherited house in Columbia, SC, feel free to reach out for a seamless process! which is about an hour-long journey by car
and the ride itself is pretty spectacular because it takes you through the Káli Basin
follow the small red signs that will point you toward the eatery – based on the signs
we were expecting to find pizza and goulash at the end of the road rather than one of the most promising fine dining restaurants of Balaton
We pull up to a Mediterranean style building enveloped by lush vegetation
fantastic rose bushes and lots of herbs – of mint alone
yet the restaurant apparently offers modern European cuisine
Our interest was definitely piqued because such a claim can mean many things
like this was going to be my place,” he told us
We hope this time he’ll stay and settle down
Klaus has been given a free hand and can realize all his creative ideas here – says the owner of Terazza
whose aim is to do catering at a much higher than average level
serving simply good food in a no-frills environment
They didn’t plan on opening a restaurant at first
Italian adventures and impressions made them come to the conclusion that Sümeg needed a restaurant that offers more than greasy goulash
but has a familiar and friendly atmosphere
The view from the terrace is breathtaking: several smaller, intimate terraces have been created in the garden, so everyone will find their own peaceful nook to chat and relax without being overheard by someone at a neighbouring table. Sümeg Castle
the green hills and the beautifully designed garden add up to a stunning backdrop
but the style of the chef is absolutely recognizable
especially for those who’ve seen Klaus’ wonderfully composed and detailed plates in any of his previous restaurants
and refined textures are his signature features
We think the design of the menu could be a bit more elegant
it looks more like it belongs in a mediocre bistro than a fine dining establishment
but it’s nothing that cannot be fixed in the future
which actually meant that he read the menu out loud for us again
There’s a three-course meal option (3,990 HUF)
and you can choose the chef’s recommendation or the degustation menu (16,500 HUF with wine
home-made bread with parmesan cheese is divine; it comes with herb butter
Maldon salt French butter and wonderful olive oil with thyme
The chef’s welcome snack is also very promising: baked
golden meatballs made from poultry with sour cherry granita
We picked marinated seatrout with celery and apple salad and champagne jelly (2,450 HUF) as a starter
and out of all the soups we liked the cold fruit soup the most (1,390 HUF)
granita and lemon and thyme brioche with mascarpone and fresh fruit
Our absolute favourite main dish was the duck breast with almond and honey crepes
so we highly recommend it to those who love dichotomies – superb harmony of savoury and sweet on your plate
we chose tagliatelle with tiger prawns and champagne mousse – it’s a home-made pasta with a light sauce and huge tiger prawns cooked to perfect crispiness; it almost feels like having lunch on a seaside terrace
The rest of our lunch was so convincing that it would have been a shame to miss the lavender crème brulée (1,390 HUF)
which looked so nice we felt guilty running the plate
ILLEGAL MINE TUNNEL - Mountain Province Police Office Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Allen S
Ocden (Right) gives instruction to one of his personnel on how to seal the illegal mine tunnel which was discovered by combined police and environment officials during an ocular inspection at sitio Latang
Mountain Province – Former Mountain Province Provincial Police Office Provincial Director retired Police Col
Allen Sumeg-ang Ocden formally endorsed congressional aspirant and former Sabangan Mayor Engr
Jupiter Coto-ong Dominguez for the province’s lone congressional district in the upcoming May 9
2022 synchronized national and local elections because he deserves to be the one in the said coveted position
Ocden appeared during the 57th birthday celebration of Dominguez last April 25
2022 to endorse the latter’s candidacy for congressman and put an end to his silence on the matter
He pointed out the need for the realization of genuine change in the province and to put an end to the over-a- decade alleged proliferation of rampant questionable practices in the bureaucracy
particularly in the implementation of public works projects that often result to substandard and poor-quality workmanship
The former police official narrated that the decision to field a single candidate for congressman in the province was reached by those who ran for the same position in the May 2019 elections but they were not so lucky to win in the previous polls
it was agreed for them to support the candidacy of Engr
Dominguez who is the most qualified to be the province’s congressman
he had been hearing reports that he is not supportive of the agreed cause of action of the previous congressional candidates but what he did was to allow his companions to join the initial campaign trail and that he timed his visit right during the birthday of Dominguez to make his support public so that the people of the province will know and understand that his support is for the former local chief executive
Ocden was the Provincial Director of the province’s police force from December 2017 to October 2018 before he filed his certificate of candidacy for congressman for the province’s line district in the May 2019 elections after availing of early retirement from the Philippine National Police (PNP)
He explained that it is time that the people of Mountain Province should vote for an accessible
leader who knows and understands the culture and traditions
and cares for the greater interest of the constituents
Ocden expressed hope that the people will put value on the importance of genuine public service from the officials they will elect to the various local elected positions and not simply rely on the popularity of a certain politician
or how much they will be getting from the ones that will distribute money during the elections
but people should put into power leaders who know how to value the importance of sincerity and sacrifice for the interest of everyone
Political observers claim that the upcoming May polls in the province will be exciting because of the overwhelming clamor from the people themselves for change in governance

Mountain Province – The province’s lone congressional seat being currently occupied by two-term Rep
will now be unchallenged following the withdrawal of the supposed contender for the said position
who earlier filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for the province’s lone congressional seat in the upcoming May 12
reportedly withdrew his interest when he submitted his statement of withdrawal with the Commission on Election (Comelec) provincial office last October 28
2024 or some 20 days after the close of the COC filing last October 8
Ocden was supposed to be an independent candidate for Representative of the Lone District of Mountain Province to the House of Representatives and was to have a head on tousle with Rep
who is under the Villar-led Nationalist Party (NP)
who is seeking his third term for the said post
who requested anonymity for personal reasons
claimed that Ocden was forced to withdraw his COC for the province’s congressional post to avoid possible complications that may arise once he is appointed to a government position in a still undisclosed agency
The former police official surprised the province’s electorate when he filed his COC for the province’s congressional post through his filing on October 8
2024 or at the last day of the scheduled COC filing
Herald Express attempted to get in touch with Ocden for his side on the matter but he could not be reached on his contact numbers while Dalog declined to issue a formal statement on the matter
Dalog and Ocden were among the five aspirants for the province’s lone congressional post following the untimely demise of former Gov
who reportedly succumbed to a lingering illness in June 2017
Mangaoang served as the province’s caretaker Congress representative during the unexpired term of the deceased lawmaker until the scheduled mid-term elections
Mountain Province has a voting population of more than 117,000 which could increase after the final validation being conducted by the poll body where the same is equitably distributed to the province’s ten towns with Bauko
Bontoc and Paracelis having the most number of registered voters
the province is one of the most peaceful and orderly localities in the country during the conduct of political exercises because of the zero election-related violence and incidents that had been recorded over the past several political exercises
Local poll observers claimed that the Dalog-Ocden toss up for the province’s congressional seat would have been exciting although Dalog still enjoys an advantage because of the numerous developments that had been undertaken in the different parts of the province tracing back from the terms of his father up to the present time
The Castle of Sümeg is situated atop a mountain
just a couple kilometres away from Lake Balaton
It is one of the most significant tourist attractions of the ‘Hungarian sea’
The charming castle has been renovated and now the unique atmosphere and the special exhibitions await visitors
The one-of-a-kind Castle of Sümeg was built in the late 13th century by Béla IV of Hungary. The castle was a hideaway for the king during the Mongolian invasion. The shape of the castle changed significantly over the years. In response to the Ottoman wars in Hungary
the castle was fortified to serve as a major frontier fortress
two towers and is about 125 metres long and 80 metres wide
The Sümeg Castle is one of the most well-preserved castles of Hungary
As turizmus.com reported
the castle went through a lot of changes lately
As the castle was one of the most important strategic and military points of the country for a long time
the fortress became deserted and there was no one to take care of it
there were initiatives to restore the building to its original beauty
The real breakthrough came in the 21st century
when its renovation finished in the framework of the National Castle Program
in cooperation with the National Heritage Protection Development Non-profit Ltd (NÖF)
The ultimate goal of this restoration was to show the castle in its most complete period
The previously available services have been significantly expanded and are now awaiting visitors
providing the same high standard programs and tours
it was particularly important to show the everyday life of the people once living within the walls of the castle in a spectacular
the restored ground floor spaces feature contemporary presentation of the castle’s 16th century rooms
the cook’s home and a Renaissance kitchen equipped with tools typical of the period
Visitors can even try on period clothes and take pictures at the selfie points. The upstairs area offers a modern experience to tourists, a minimalist 21st century exhibition
there are short films playing in the rooms
Tourist that are up for a small game can experience the thrill of discovering the finds hidden beneath the surface: there is an interactive archaeological game projected on the floor of the room
and website in this browser for the next time I comment
