a well-preserved grave can be read like an obituary
travels and even fortunes of a life long gone
Advances in technology have been pushing the limits on how well-preserved a body needs to be in order for experts to extract a biography
In the case of one young Bronze Age woman in what is now central Hungary
not even cremation could hide her tragic tale
Researchers from institutions in Italy and Hungary have analyzed numerous samples of human remains and artefacts uncovered in a 4,000-year-old cemetery near the Hungarian city of Szigetszentmiklós
Consisting of hundreds of clay pots buried half a kilometer from the shore of the river Danube
the 'urnfield' cemetery preserves a trove of archeological data representing a long lost culture known as the Vatya
The little we currently know of the Vatya is based on a scattering of fortified structures and cemeteries of cremated bodies buried in ceramic urns. It's barely enough to give an insight into a people who occupied the Danube basin for about half a millennia starting roughly 2100 BCE
The largest of those urnfields is a site near Szigetszentmiklós
uncovered during a rescue excavation prior to the construction of a new supermarket
525 burials were found inside half a hectare (about an acre)
and occasional grave goods made of ceramic or bronze
The researchers took 41 samples from 29 of the burials
and ran a variety of laboratory tests and measures to develop a clearer picture of who these people were
it contained more luxurious items that included a golden hair ring and a bronze neck ring
Even 241's urn contained signs of the respect her community held
its design uniquely reflecting an early Vatya motif
Among its bone fragments were also signs that the occupant – a female in her late 20s or early 30s – wasn't buried alone
barely fetuses of around 30 weeks' gestation
Where most of the urns contained a mere portion of the deceased's cremated body
the contents of 241 were comparatively more complete
almost as if an extraordinary level of care had been taken to collect every tiny fragment from the funerary pyre prior to burial
her body still contained tiny details on her life history that could be revealed through an analysis of its isotopes
contain layers of material called dentine which capture significant biographical events as a chemical signature
The conical part of her femur would have been remodeled at a standard rate over the years
preserving signs of nutrition and movement
Measuring these signatures helped the researchers develop a picture of a woman who came from afar when she was a child of somewhere around 8 to 13 years of age
possibly having been born in Southern Moravia – what is today the Czech Republic – if not the upper Danube
Similar analyses of the remains in other urns reveal her integration wasn't unusual
with other women also coming from various places well outside the burial site's locality
We might imagine this esteemed young woman marrying into the respected higher ranks of the Vatya community
holding onto her heirloom neck ring as an emblem of her distant upbringing; her bone clothing pins and hair ring given as gifts welcoming her to her new home
we can only guess if her death was a consequence of an early birth
The emotional tale of number 241's life aside
it's remarkable that a few burned remains can tell us so much about the Vatya's culture
From a jumble of bones we can find traces of women journeying in from afar to create distant ties
but almost certainly affecting the power and politics of an age long gone
waiting to be translated by the right technology

gombfoci is a game invented in the kitchens of Hungary a century or so ago
You could say that there is nothing more Hungarian than gombfoci – but that’s not strictly true
What is more Hungarian is a Hungarian trying to explain gombfoci
At his Pizza Mundial restaurant in Szigetszentmiklós, home to the world’s first and so far only gombfoci museum
When Gábor’s chum András Becz was under pressure to clear the family home of his unique collection of gombfoci sets
the basement at Pizza Mundial was cleared and transformed into today’s museum
with its bright counters and revered portraits
the museum is also a shrine to Miklós Fehér

when English trainers were showing Hungarians how to play football
they would teach team strategy with counters on a board
these players then re-enacted these tactics demonstrations at home
they would transform the kitchen table into a replica of a football (foci) pitch
“The game really took off in the early 1950s,” says Gábor
“During the golden era of Puskás and Bozsik
Gombfoci counters began to feature the faces of famous players on the top
Boys could have matches between different teams
and soon there were sets produced every season.”
The most valuable example in the Gombfoci Háza Múzeum is the one representing the Hungary team who beat England 7-1 in 1954
Hungarians tried to export the game to England
As boys there were already playing their own table-football games
“There are two main countries where gombfoci is played,” says Gábor
Just as every Hungarian family had different house rules
so every local club developed its own way of playing
how the game was codified is not certain – one source refers to a meeting in 1958 at Budapest’s venerable Kárpátia restaurant on what is now Ferenciek tere
clubs in Hungary have one agreed set of rules
“Brazilians adopted the so-called 12-touch game,” explains Gábor
“Each player retains possession for so long until he has to aim for the goal
Whenever the Gombfoci World Cup is played in Brazil – Gábor and his mates have been out to Rio and São Paulo – everyone plays Brazilian rules
Szigetszentmiklós usually fare pretty well but fall against stronger opponents from Szeged or Komló
“It doesn’t really matter,” concludes Gábor

Workers at South Korean SungEel’s battery processing plants in Hungary have been repeatedly exposed to carcinogenic substances
It has now emerged that airborne concentrations of carcinogenic heavy metals at the battery processing plant in Szigetszentmiklós were always several times the permitted limit in tests carried out between 2019 and 2022
Átlátszó investigated the contamination of the South Korean SungEel Hitech Hungary Ltd
the portal obtained documents that show an extremely serious situation
The investigative news portal first obtained penalty decisions on the battery-processing company
the paper turned to the National Data Protection and Information Authority
the government agency sent the unredacted documents
which showed that airborne concentrations of carcinogenic heavy metals were many times the limit in tests carried out between 2019-2022
18 workers were exposed to increased levels of nickel and cobalt
which the company did not report or investigate
One of the machines had airborne concentrations of nickel 2000 times above the limit value
but concentrations of cobalt and manganese were also above the limit
and some research has linked it to certain neurodegenerative diseases
A machine exploded at the SungEel Ltd. factory on 14 March. A worker repairing a grinder died of his injuries the same day, while another worker was fighting for weeks and eventually died on 3 April, Telex writes
the labour inspectorate fined the company HUF 10 million (EUR 25,830)
The emergency services also found serious shortcomings
The company also failed to carry out the mandatory health check-ups of its workers
which also failed to comply with occupational health and safety regulations
The Bátonyterenye processing plant was previously reported to have been inspected by the inspectors themselves
who detected a strong smell of solvent that caused skin rashes and sore throats
There were also machine explosion accidents and fires
As the plant has been fined on several occasions for improper waste management
Átlátszó believes that the payment of the fines should not have caused any problems for the company: in 2022
had a turnover of HUF 18.5 billion (EUR 47.8 million) and a profit of HUF 1.6 billion (EUR 4.1 million)
the temporary suspension of the Bátonyterenye plant could mean a big loss of revenue for SungEel
Improper (and highly dangerous) cleaning of the grinder at SungEel’s plant in Bátonyterenye:
All the Chinese battery factories that the Viktator wants to bring to Hungary will be the same as this one or even worse
