The Budapest Times
As Transport Minister János Lázár explained on Monday in Szikszó at the residents’ forum on the problems of the new M30 motorway between Miskolc and Szikszó
the contractor Strabag has already been asked to repair it under the guarantee
Lázár even threatened to expel Strabag from the country if the renovation does not progress as expected
The M30 was built at a cost of 354 billion forints and the first technical defect occurred just six months after handover
The 57 km section of the M30 motorway above Miskolc
which leads to the Slovakian border and Košice
a section of the motorway between Miskolc and Szikszó was closed by the operator MKIF Zrt
on 17 February 2024 after the road structure shifted in several places over a length of 150 metres and the road surface cracked
the renovation will take 10-11 months and the costs could reach around 5 billion forints
Experts from the Technical University of Budapest have been called in to investigate the defects

A Brazilian searching for his great-aunt found information about a cookbook author of the same name
The “Seeking Kin” column aims to help reunite long-lost relatives and friends
(JTA) – When Brazil native Fabio Rosenfeld brought up launching a search for his grandfather’s sister who had survived the Holocaust
I opened my “National Geographic Atlas of the World” to locate her hometown of Reghin
A week later, the surname and the area struck me as familiar, so back to the atlas I went. There was Reghin, in the Transylvania region of Romania and Hungary, near Cluj-Napoca, a town central to a “Seeking Kin” column about an old Hungarian-Jewish cookbook whose author was given as Mrs
Fabio Rosenfeld emailed information he had just gleaned while searching for his great-aunt
it dealt with the cookbook’s author possessing the same name
A mention of that Aranka Rosenfeld in a cookbook by the eminent culinary authority Joan Nathan included a comment from Rosenfeld’s granddaughter
An online search located Blumenberg living in Manhattan
She was thrilled to be found and learn about Tara Lotstein
woman who had bought Blumenberg’s grandmother’s work
“A Jewish Woman’s Cookbook.” The purchase launched Lotstein’s search for several people
“I was very touched and so surprised that her cookbook is [still] read and used
filled in key information about her grandmother
and lived mostly in Szikszo and Subotica until passing away in March 1981
“Aranka saw all her children die in her life,” Blumenberg said
were observant Jews who owned a mill in Szikszo
One of seven children (all but one of them girls)
Aranka married Martin and they settled in Subotica
where they owned a large hardware store and lived upstairs
They returned to Subotica and during the Holocaust were incarcerated in its ghetto
along with approximately 80 members of Aranka’s family
was killed by the Germans in 1944 while fighting for a resistance movement
Aranka and daughters Eva and Vera were incarcerated at a labor camp in Austria and survived the Holocaust
moved to Israel and Hebraicized their surname to Orr
They lived in Tiberias and Haifa and had three children: Reuven
Vera died of breast cancer in her early 40s; her husband passed recently
married a Jewish communist named Zoltan Biro and worked in Belgrade
where Blumenberg and sister Judith were raised
by then nearly devoid of its once-thriving Jewish community
Their ornate synagogue couldn’t always draw 10 men for public prayers
but Rosenfeld – “she came to services every Friday night,” Blumenberg recalled – would be counted in the minyan (quorum)
with Subotica and Belgrade just over 100 miles apart
which are crepes or blintzes,” Blumenberg said
Blumenberg said Rosenfeld taught the sisters how to cook
“We hung around her all the time when she was cooking,” Blumenberg said
“She gave cooking classes in Subotica occasionally for young women – not Jewish women; there weren’t any.”
Blumenberg has two of her grandmother’s original hard-covered cookbooks
The books survived the Holocaust because a neighbor safeguarded some of the Rosenfelds’ possessions
a Budapest publishing company reprinted the cookbook a decade ago
although it removed Rosenfeld’s name as author
Blumenberg said she hasn’t demanded that her grandmother receive credit
also published two small Hungarian-language cookbooks in Israel
presumably while visiting her daughter in the country’s early years
The mention of Aranka Rosenfeld that would help “Seeking Kin” connect Blumenberg and Lotstein was contained in “Joan Nathan’s Jewish Holiday Cookbook.”
“I’m thrilled,” Nathan said of her book’s role
“Some people look at their recipes and wish they had something of their past
When you find these threads – I’m just excited by that.”
is happy about the search he unwittingly helped solve
a kind of tzedakah without money,” he said
“The real tzedakah is when you give something to someone you don’t know.”

Hungarian soft drink maker Hell Energy inaugurated an 80 billion forint (EUR 206.7 million) capacity expansion at its base in Szikszó
The expansion will create 240 jobs, Péter Szijjártó
The joint investment by Hell Energy and its canning unit, Quality Pack
will enable the production of around 4 billion cans of beverage and 6 billion filled finished products
The investment will strengthen Hell Energy’s position as market leader not only in Hungary
Cyprus and Croatia and could further expand its export market currently consisting of over 60 countries

As one of the region’s key transport corridors
it promised substantial economic and logistical benefits for nearby communities
severe structural issues forced the closure of the section between Szikszó and Miskolc due to subsidence
János Lázár, Minister of Construction and Transport, visited the site and sharply criticised Strabag. In his opinion, it was the company’s faulty workmanship that led to the problems that occurred. According to the minister
the track had to be almost completely demolished to ensure its stability by reinforcing the supporting structure
The redesigned section will be reinforced with iron piles
which is expected to provide a long-term solution
According to Telex, Strabag accepted responsibility and committed to covering the reconstruction costs
estimated at HUF 4–5 billion (EUR 9.7–12.1 million)
Originally slated for completion by January 2023
the reconstruction has faced multiple delays
with the latest projections suggesting up to nine months before the road is fully restored
Strabag has more than 86,000 employees and is active in several countries
The company is one of the largest construction players in the region
but the recent scandal in Hungary has highlighted quality issues that could seriously affect the company’s reputation
Strabag has a strong track record in the European construction industry
but the current case is a warning that there may be a significant gap between its track record and its current performance
Lázár made it clear that they do not wish to cooperate with Strabag in the future
as they do not consider the company’s work to be of sufficient quality
the lesson to be learned from the case of the M30 motorway is that more stringent requirements should be applied when selecting contractors
especially when they are foreign companies
The Minister of Construction and Transport’s stance extends beyond this issue; he also advocates for banning foreign companies from operating in Hungarian retail markets
The problems of the Miskolc motorway section have a significant impact not only from an economic but also from a social point of view
The daily life of the local population is made more difficult by the diversion and traffic restrictions
The success of such projects is not only a technical issue but also a social one
as transport infrastructure has a direct impact on people’s quality of life
In the midst of the scandal surrounding the M30 motorway, news broke that Strabag CEO Klemens Haselsteiner had died unexpectedly at the age of 44. According to an official statement from the company, his death was due to natural causes, which was later clarified by Kronen Zeitung to have been an aneurysm bleeding
The father of the Austrian construction industry leader
is one of the best-known figures in the Austrian construction industry and owns a significant shareholding in Strabag
According to Index
Klemens Haselsteiner graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in business administration and worked in various management positions within the Strabag Group
He was CEO from January 2023 and one of his main objectives was to make the company climate-neutral
cracks on it have become so bad that the operator has closed it for several months
The section was built by the Austrian Strabag
which has already been ordered by the Hungarian state to carry out the repairs
According to the latest information from Útinform
the restriction between the 33 Miskolc-North junction and the 40 Szikszó junction
will be in force from 17 February to 17 August in both directions
This means that for at least half a year motorists will not be able to drive on this stretch
A video was also published on Világgazdaság
taken just before the road was completely closed
You can see how the road surface between the two lanes has slid away from each other in several places
The news was confirmed to Világgazdaság by László Szimicsku
He added that as operators they had maintained traffic as long as possible
but the displacement had become so great that they had no choice but to close the road completely
A 100-150 metre wide section of the track is sunken due to the displacement of its structure
He pointed out that it will now almost certainly not be possible to travel on the closed section for many months
as the entire structure may have to be rebuilt
he pointed out that MKIF was not involved in the project
all they could do was report the problem to the Hungarian state
The M30 motorway was opened to traffic in October 2021
cost a total of HUF 200 billion (EUR 514 million)
making it one of the largest projects of the previous EU cycle
The whole project has been divided into three parts by the contracting authority
with the now problematic 10.4-kilometre section between Miskolc and Szikszó being won by a consortium of Strabag Építő Ltd
and Strabag AG for HUF 39.4 billion (EUR 101 million)
has already called on the company to carry out the warranty restoration works according to the schedule
