The Marlins have signed right-hander Freddy Tarnok to a minor league deal, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball Media writes
The contract includes an invitation for Tarnok to attend Miami’s big league Spring Training camp
Tarnok’s own time on Oakland’s big league roster was limited to five games and 14 2/3 innings in 2023
with the righty delivering a 4.91 ERA in that limited sample while also allowing four homers and 11 walks
Shoulder and hip injuries hampered Tarnok for much of the year
and he ended up having hip surgery in August 2023
Some rust wasn’t unexpected after Tarnok’s recovery
but he managed only a 7.39 ERA in 31 2/3 Triple-A innings this past season
That time in Triple-A was spent with both the Athletics’ top affiliate and in the Phillies’ farm system
as Philadelphia claimed Tarnok off waivers this past June
The Phils outrighted Tarnok off their 40-man roster at the start of November and he elected to become a minor league free agent
An increase in both his walk and home run totals plagued Tarnok in the upper minors as well as in his brief time in the majors
These issues have led to a 4.68 ERA over 92 1/3 career Triple-A innings
as well as an 11.97% walk rate and 23.44% strikeout rate
While Tarnok has some ability to miss bats
his inability to keep the ball in the park or keep batters off the basepaths has left him looking for a fresh start entering his age-26 season
It is possible a healthy Tarnok gets back to his much more solid pre-injury form
and for the minimal cost of a minors contract
the Marlins are betting that he can become at least a depth swingman now that he is further removed from his hip surgery
Leighton writes that Miami will again give Tarnok a chance to start games
Miami Marlins Transactions Freddy Tarnok
by grabthar’s hammer the a’s fan base shall be avenged
I thought he was one of the droids from Voyager
I thought Royber Salinas was back with the Braves
The Braves signed him to a minor league deal after he was let go by the A’s
They have a fairly good mix of starting pitchers
Dax Fulton and Eury Perez but Alcantara likely be traded
can’t see them paying him with the offense they have in place
@bwm The Marlins offense in August & September this year was about the best it has been for a long time
Fortes actually hit .290 after the AS break
which is fine by me for a glove first catcher
4 or 5 could be valued bench players on very good teams
For 2025 I’m predicting at least one of our high flying division rivals will have a couple of embarrassing series against the Marlins
Fortes and Augustn Ramirez could be one of the better catching platoons in the league
Sanchez always been middling and the rest of the lineup also middling but could produce
Listened to some of the Jacksonville AAA last season
They must like the prospects they got from Texas in return for Burger because he was their best hitter last season
a big Sandy Alcantara trade and a breakout year from Max Meyer would have them in good shape
Rooting for him but inconsistency was his game and untapped potential was always his scouting report…
Good thing whether fans from other teams know players or not doesn’t matter
Hernandez,Coleman(SMH),Bonilla(wrong Pirate),Piazza,Santana,Beltran,and Cespedes
Then Steve Cohen bought the Mets and everything seemed right… I mean you’re not going to win every year
but to know that a real fan happens to own the team… Now The Mets have added Lindor and now Soto… I’ve got lots to be happy about and this comes from a long
Now my question to you is do you think the Marlins are going to trade Alcantara if he’s looking ok at the break
It’s always a rebuild and that’s a lot of money… Or who knows do you think they have another playoff run in them???
think that trading Alcantara is a foregone conclusion
and that the return will be based on how good he looks
The notion is that the Marlins will be able to trade him and Garrett among the remaining pitching pieces that are proven trade chips
and they are expecting the other pitchers like Weathers
to pitch well in their further development
and the young position players to play well to keep their jobs instead of the next young player to step into the opportunity…and the same with the bullpen
the Marlins would at least have to be within striking distance of that 6th playoff spot
if what they expect to happen to lead to Alcantara and Garrett pitching well while they are developing the first layer of young guys Bendix acquired
for them to still be so far out of a playoff spot that would warrant trading Alcantara and Garrett
they are within striking distance of that last playoff spot
Bendix probably would still trade Alcantara and Garrett if the Marlins are within striking distance
with Bendix feeling that he can do like he did with his trades so far
in layering the time-tables of when young players will be at the MLB level – where he gets combos of guys that are far away along with guys that are MLB-ready
Then the MLB-ready guys will be there for the team that’s within striking distance
It’s an odd situation when looking at it further because the math doesn’t fit very well
That 6th playoff spot changed a lot of things with how rebuilds work
A team really has to tank really badly to justify a 5-year plan
It feels like rebuilds are more 3-year plans now

The Miami Marlins made a rare non-trade move at the end of 2024. The club signed former Braves and Athletics pitcher Freddy Tarnok to a deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training
he has pitched 15.1 major league innings with a 4.70 ERA and 15 strikeouts
Once a top-10 prospect in Atlanta's system
He also features a useful curveball and changeup (which
is particularly effective against left-handed hitters)
Once a solid prospect who was included as a piece in the blockbuster trade that sent star catcher Sean Murphy to the NL East rival Braves and All-Star William Contreras to the Milwaukee Brewers
Tarnok will now have a chance to establish himself as a true major leaguer with Peter Bendix's Miami Marlins
It is noteworthy that Bendix targeted Tarnok specifically
Marlins fans are painfully familiar with the fact that Miami typically seems allergic to free-agent signings
The club is generally one of the last in the league to agree to deals in the offseason
However, the Marlins, who have long had a favorable reputation for their ability to identify and develop starting pitching
the young righty could be a part of Miami's roster
This is a sensible gamble by Bendix and the Marlins

but spent much of that year on the injured list
Tarnok was placed on the 60-day injured list that April with a strained right shoulder
and was placed on the 15-day injured list in August with a right calf strain
He began this season on the 60-day injured list with right hip inflammation, but was recently reinstated. He was ranked No. 13 on MLB.com’s A’s top prospects list entering this season

He throws hard but has struggled with his control
Tarnok posted a 13.9% walk rate with Las Vegas last year
“I guess he’s got a good arm,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said

He’s going to hit in the [indoor batting] cage
It is unclear if Turner will accompany the Phillies to London next weekend
Tarnok is the second player now in Philadelphia that was part of a recent big trade between the A's and Atlanta Braves
Tarnok was a part of the A's and Braves deal that landed Sean Murphy in Atlanta
while Pache was a decent-sized part of the trade for Matt Olson
Tarnok has been battling injuries for most of his tenure with the A's
undergoing hip surgery in August of last year
The 25-year-old began his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators on May 8
so a decision about what to do with him was looming as the 30-day marker approached
but he also still has two options remaining
so he could have just stayed in the minors once he'd been activated from the 60-day IL
The problem the A's ran into however is that they don't have a ton of roster flexibility at the moment
and there aren't too many options to remove from the current 40-man to clear a spot for his return
This was compounded by the imminent return of Luis Medina to the A's rotation on Sunday
and he is also on the 60-day IL and will require someone to be removed from the 40-man roster
Tarnok's transactions page does does list that he was placed on waivers
but the A's made the announcement that Tarnok is now with the Phillies
Tarnok has totaled 7 1/3 innings pitched with a 13.50 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP
Four of his six outings resulted in multiple runs allowed
Tarnok has also had a couple of brief stints in the big leagues over the past two seasons
tossing 15 1/3 innings and holding a 4.70 ERA
He has struck out 15 and walked 11 in that span
JASON BURKEJason has been covering the A’s at various sites for over a decade, and was the original host of the Locked on A’s podcast. He also covers the Stanford Cardinal as they attempt to rebuild numerous programs to prominence.

It wasn’t publicly known that Tarnok had been designated for assignment
but Oakland had to make some kind of decision since was nearing the end of his 30-day rehab assignment
Tarnok has pitched in six games for Triple-A Las Vegas since May 8
and with a 13.50 ERA to show for those 7 1/3 innings of work
Tarnok might have simply pitched himself out of the Athletics’ plans
Tarnok has been on the IL since Opening Day due to inflammation in his right hip
and he was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day at the start of May
controllable players the A’s landed in one of several fire-sale type trades during their latest rebuild
Tarnok’s first (and officially only) season with the A’s consisted of five outings and 14 2/3 innings due to multiple injuries
Shoulder problems led to a 60-day IL stint to begin the 2023 campaign as well
and hip surgery then ended his season altogether in August
Recovery from that hip procedure lingered into the offseason and Spring Training
necessitating Tarnok’s IL stint at the start of this year
Tarnok has run into some troubles keeping the ball in the park in the Pacific Coast League
and his walk and strikeout rates have been average at best even prior to 2024 across his 71 career Triple-A innings
Tarnok has a solid 4.18 ERA in those 71 Triple-A frames
There’s no risk for the Phillies in having some more big league-ready rotation depth ready at Lehigh Valley in the event of injury
or if Philadelphia just wants to give some of its starters extra rest in advance of what the team hopes will be a deep postseason run
Covey has yet to pitch this season after suffering a shoulder strain during Spring Training
and he likely would’ve been placed on the 60-day IL much earlier than today had the Phillies been in need of a 40-man roster spot
a 60-day IL placement is retroactive to the start of the initial 15-day placement
so Covey can now technically be activated at any time since it has already been more than 60 days since Opening Day
Oakland Athletics Philadelphia Phillies Transactions Dylan Covey Freddy Tarnok
If you’re the A’s why would you give up a pitcher who had at least 5 more years of control
that Sean Murphy trade is looking as bad as the Matt Olson and Matt Chapman trades
It’s even more stupid because while they have a full 40-man right now
they could move Erceg to the 60 with his forearm tightness being a precursor to an arm injury
and probably has less potential than tarnok
Boneheaded move at least not trying to get a PBTNL or Cash Considerations for tarnok
I like Freddy but the A’s are on fully retooling mode then there was not enough room for him at the major league level
Sits around 95MPH his best pitch is a change up if he can finally rid himself of the injury bug could be a nice little steal for Phils was also A’s 13th ranked prospect
PHI likes their healthy BB/9 and a lifetime 6.5 BB/9
Affectioniately referred to as Tarnok the Hunter
PHI is benefitting from the Olson/Murphy trades
They could probably acquire him for their 2 best prospects or possibly just for Suarez alone
They signed him to a 1 year deal and is out the entire season
DFAing Gott wouldn’t do anything as he’s already on the 60-day IL and isn’t counting against the A’s 40-man roster
DFAing him achieves nothing outside of if the A’s want to pay his guaranteed contract in may or over the course of the season
or if they wanna be dicks and prevent him from accruing service years
I don’t think injured players like that can be waived or DFA’d they would need to be released
and then resigned to a minor league contract
meaning he’s a vested veteran and could reject an outright assignment to the minors anyways while retaining his salary
He’s on the Cristian Pache career path
I mean allowing 4 homers and 11 walks in 14 innings is an 0.2 WAR
Because WAR is the most idiotic “stat” out there
The problem isn’t with WAR,it’s that too many people look solely at WAR
WAR is useful when combined with other stats
I fully expect the Braves offense to start getting hot towards the end of June
but those injuries will be tough to overcome
I’m sure they’ll meet in the playoffs again
“WAR is dumb because I don’t understand it
I already don’t understand baseball and now I don’t understand something else about baseball.”
Freddy Tarnok was another key piece of the Sean Murphy trade
but his first season with the Athletics was marred by injury
Freddy Tarnok was a big piece for the Oakland Athletics in the Sean Murphy trade last offseason
injuries limited him to just 11 total appearances across three levels including a brief five-game stint in the majors
Tarnok was acquired from the Atlanta Braves on December 12, 2022 in a three-team trade that also involved the Milwaukee Brewers
Kyle Muller and Manny Piña from the Braves and Esteury Ruiz from the Brewers
The hope was that Tarnok and Muller would be two rotation options for the A’s going forward
Tarnok is ranked as Oakland’s 13th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline and was a third round pick of the Braves back in 2017
A right shoulder strain sidelined Tarnok for nearly all of the spring
He began the season on the 15-day injured list and was later transferred to the 60-day IL on April 13
He began a rehab assignment in early June and was reinstated from the injured list and optioned to Las Vegas on July 8
He made five starts for the Aviators where he allowed four runs in 19 2⁄3 innings
he struggled with his command and finished his Triple A stint with 11 walks and 11 strikeouts
He was promoted to the majors on July 14 and made his Oakland debut the next day in a relief appearance against the Twins where he allowed two runs in 2 2⁄3 innings
Tarnok would end up appearing in five games while allowing eight runs in 14 2⁄3 innings overall
His command struggles persisted after the promotion as he walked 11 more hitters while striking out 14
He was again placed on the 15-day injured list on August 14
this time due to a calf strain and was transferred to the 60-day IL on September 17 which effectively ended his season
Not a lot went right for Tarnok in his first season with the Athletics
The shoulder injury during the spring was the most significant event in that it cost him all of his normal build up and forced him to play catch up throughout the season
His five-game stint at Triple A yielded a 1.83 ERA
but his 5.83 FIP and 7.50 xFIP told different stories
Tarnok walked 23 hitters in 36 1⁄3 innings which simply won’t play
it is hard to base too much on such a small sample size given the early injury
2024 is all about health and getting through a full spring training
Mark Kotsay used him primarily out of the bullpen during his brief stint in the majors
but the injury situation most likely played into that decision
He should be among the large group of players who will compete for a spot in the rotation
As the Oakland Athletics start to get ramped up in Arizona, a couple pitchers are lagging behind with the injury bug. We'd already heard that Ken Waldichuk wouldn't be ready for opening day but Martin Gallegos of MLB.com has reported that Sean Newcomb and Freddy Tarnok are also progressing slower than anticipated
Newcomb underwent two separate knee surgeries in the past six months, the most recent of which was in December. According to the initial report
Newcomb had lingering issues in his right knee after undergoing surgery on his left knee back in September
Newcomb was expected to be on a timeline that would have him ready by opening day
as we're just two days into pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training
Freddy Tarnok underwent hip surgery back in August to repair labrum and cartilage damage sustained over the summer
Tarnok was expected to be ready to go by the start of spring training
though it appears that he's a bit behind schedule
Waldichuk was cleared to start a throwing program earlier this week but there won't be enough time for him to ramp up ahead of opening day
Waldichuk is currently slated to start throwing bullpen sessions toward the end of March
Ken Waldichuk (elbow) has been cleared to play catch and should be throwing off a mound soon
he’ll be begin throwing bullpens near the end of Spring Training
so he won’t be ready for the start of the season
Waldichuk's injury was a bit more concerning than the other two as he underwent flexor tendon surgery to repair an injury in his throwing elbow
Anything involving the UCL is a bit suspicious and many pitchers who opt for non-Tommy John procedures often find their way back on the operating table a short time later
We'll have to be hopeful that Waldichuk's issue doesn't progress any further because losing him for a full 12 months to a Tommy John or internal brace procedure would be a significant blow to the pitching staff
Waldichuk will miss opening day and we're unsure if Tarnok was going to make the opening day roster out of camp
but Newcomb was expected to be in the A's bullpen at the start of the season
is also a lefty so he'll likely fill Newcomb's role should the latter miss time on the IL
Newcomb underwent two separate knee surgeries in the past six months, the most recent of which was in December. According to the initial report
Freddy Tarnok underwent hip surgery back in August to repair labrum and cartilage damage sustained over the summer
Injury bug hits Oakland Athletics pitchers as Sean Newcomb and Freddy Tarnok progress slower than anticipated
Freddy Tarnok made his fifth appearance at Triple A on Thursday
and continued to build on his strong start since the promotion
Thursday was a busy day down on the farm with a pair of doubleheaders
The offense really struggled across the board
although Freddy Tarnok turned in a great outing and some of the recently promoted players such as Geraldo Quintero and Drake Baldwin had notable performances
Box Score
Freddy Tarnok got the ball to start the first game of the night for Gwinnett and turned in a very strong performance
going five innings while allowing just one run on five hits and a pair of walks
Tarnok also struck out six as he lowered his ERA in Triple-A to just 2.03 with a 0.94 WHIP through his first five starts after being promoted from Mississippi
Seth Elledge and Danny Young combined for a pair of scoreless innings in relief
William Woods tried to save it in the eighth
but allowed the inherited runner to score and tie the game
though Michael Tonkin was able to nail it down in the ninth
There wasn’t much offense for the Stripers as they managed just one combined hit and scored just one run excluding the two inherited runners in scoring position that came across during extra innings
If there had to be a star at the plate in a game like this
Box Score
It started out in the first as Huascar Ynoa couldn’t make it out of the inning
getting victimized for three homers and giving up five runs while recording just two outs
Fortunately the rest of the Striper pitching staff kept Nashville off the scoreboard
led by Connor Johnstone who tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief
The offense wasn’t much better through the first seven innings in this one
and Taylor Motter picked up a double that knocked in Perez for the lone Gwinnett run
Box Score
Alan Rangel got the start and turned in five excellent innings
three hits and a walk while striking out five
but the Braves offense didn’t manage to get on the scoreboard in this one
He was followed by a scoreless inning apiece from Lisandro Santos
as Braves pitching allowed a combined five hits and three walks in this tough loss
The offense managed just five hits in the game
Cody Milligan had a nice game with two doubles and also walked twice
The recently promoted Cade Bunnell also had two doubles and a walk of his own
The only other hit by the Braves was a single from Andrew Moritz
who also walked to reach base twice in this one
Box Score
and unfortunately he struggled with his command
Salinas gave up four runs (three earned) in just 3 1/3 innings
He allowed four hits and walked four while throwing just 48 of his 76 pitches for strikes
Alex Segal and Alex Barger were tagged for a pair of runs in relief before Austin Smith was able to pitch a clean inning to finish this game off for the staff
but two recent promotions certainly didn’t
The recently promoted Geraldo Quintero doubled twice and stole a base
Box Score
The first game of this doubleheader was pretty much written off as soon as it started as Jorge Bautista got the nod and gave up runs in each of the first three innings
Bautista didn’t make it out of the third before allowing seven runs
though three guys whose names you are likely familiar with had some impact
had a double and scored one of the three runs
Mahki Backstrom also doubled in the loss while Brandol Mezquita had a hit and scored a run
Box Score
The second game went a little better with the Braves top Day 3 draft pick
Mejia allowed just one unearned run on a walk and no hits over 2 1/3 with two strikeouts
Rolddy Munoz would allow two runs over two innings while he picked up four strikeouts
It wasn’t until the final inning that things got close
as Juan Mateo allowed four runs in that inning of work
This was the one game in the system where the offense didn’t have any trouble on Thursday
Francisco Floyd also had two hits and reached base four times
Recent 12th round pick Justin Janas also had a two-hit night
while Braulio Vasquez was the final member of the lineup with a multi-hit night

Newcomb and Tarnok may not be ready when Cactus League play begins
The Oakland Athletics placed one pitcher on the 60-day injured list Wednesday and they have two more that are limited as spring camp gets underway
MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos reported that Sean Newcomb and Freddy Tarnok are both slightly behind the rest of the group after undergoing surgery during the offseason
Mark Kotsay mentioned Sean Newcomb and Freddy Tarnok as two pitchers who are "slightly behind" the rest of the group as they return from surgeries
Both are progressing well on slower programs but may not play in spring games right away
Newcomb had a pair of surgeries on his knee with one coming in September and another in December
It doesn’t sound like either situation is serious
but it may keep both out of the early Cactus League games
Newcomb was a late addition to the club in 2023 after he was acquired from the Giants
Newcomb has a career 4.47 ERA and a 4.41 FIP in 421 innings in his career
Tarnok was acquired from Atlanta in the Sean Murphy trade
He’s battled injury off and on throughout his professional career

12:20pm: The A’s have also shut Tarnok down for the time being
The 25-year-old experienced a “flare-up” in his surgically repaired right hip and isn’t throwing at the moment
Tarnok underwent surgery to repair the labrum and some cartilage in his hip last August
With just over three weeks until Opening Day, this update likely takes Tarnok out of the mix for a rotation job. The former Braves farmhand, acquired as part of last offseason’s Sean Murphy trade
missed the first few months of the ’23 season with a shoulder strain and pitched only 36 1/3 innings between the minors and the big leagues last year
Baseball America ranked Tarnok 25th among Oakland prospects this season
noting that a lack of durability and sub-par command point more to a future in the bullpen than the rotation ceiling that looked viable earlier in the righty’s minor league tenure
Medina exited his most recent spring start with a knee sprain of unknown severity and was seen in the A’s clubhouse on crutches this morning
There’s no firm timetable for Medina’s return to the Oakland roster
but a Grade 2 sprain likely comes with an absence of some note
but Medina had more success in the majors than the remainder of the (non-Sears) pitchers the A’s have landed over the course of their current rebuild
Looking strictly at last year’s 5.42 ERA in 109 2/3 innings
but Medina was shelled early in his debut campaign before finishing the year on a more solid stretch
Over his final 11 starts and four long-relief appearances
Medina pitched 70 2/3 frames with a 4.22 ERA
Medina averaged better than 96 mph on his heater and posted a quality 11.4% swinging-strike rate
but those positives were undercut by subpar command
The right-hander walked more than 11% of his opponents
and that lackluster command contributed to a below-average 21.6% strikeout rate that checks in lower than one would expect for a pitcher with Medina’s velocity and bat-missing ability

is headed to the big leagues for the first time
A third-round pick out of a Florida high school in 2017
the 6’3″ hurler has spent the past few seasons as one of the organization’s more interesting pitching prospects
He’s split the 2022 campaign between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett

Baseball America recently slotted Tarnok as the #8 prospect in the Atlanta farm system

where current Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos served as general manager for a while
but he’s rated as a plus defensive second baseman throughout his time in the majors
The Braves just nabbed Young off waivers from the Mariners last week
The 28-year-old made his only appearance in an Atlanta uniform last night
tossing 2 2/3 innings of mop-up work in a blowout win over the Mets
He’s up to 6 1/3 innings of three-run ball between Seattle and Atlanta
striking out six with a couple of walks but averaging only 88.7 MPH on his sinker
The lack of velocity hasn’t stopped the University of Florida product from posting strong numbers in Triple-A this year
He’s combined for 29 2/3 innings of 3.64 ERA ball
striking out a stellar 35.2% of opponents against an 8% walk rate
Young will find himself back on waivers over the next couple days
Between his Triple-A production and all three remaining minor league option years
he could draw some interest from teams seeking left-handed relief depth
Hopefully someone picks up Young and gives him a real shot
When he gets close to return the rooster will be close to expanding so he may get back to majors
He seemed to at least be throwing a lot in the strike zone
Braves are handling their youngsters very well
2 possible ROY prospects & Grissom looking stellar
NL East is becoming the division to watch
Goins gave my 1 year old daughter a baseball before a game
He apparently tries to do this before every game with a family with a kid who looks like they are at their first game
Bannix: AA seems to have some affinity for him
Most of the 8 years he’s appeared in the ML came under AA’s watch at Toronto
My heart sank a bit because when I read the headline
Fried is on the injured list the concussion one
he should start either Thursday or at some point against the Astros
I was thinking they put it on a longer IL stint
I think Atlanta realized last night when Swanson cut his head that they had no back up infielders
If Swanson had left that game the Braves would had to play someone out of position
Ozuna doesn’t handle anything easily except strike 3
which allows Vaughn to backup SS and 3B so once Rosario got hurt last night it forced a move
His career has been such a wave I wasn’t sure if he’d ever get to this point
I hope they give him a good Tarmok to land on
Are they planning on letting Tarnock start
I would have figured with the current make up of the team he’d fit in as middle relief
I wished the Tigers had used him like Atlanta used Mark Lemke
A’s right-hander has been sidelined due to arm discomfort
The Oakland Athletics recently received some good news on the injury front
A’s manager Mark Kotsay told MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos that Freddy Tarnok won’t need surgery and will begin a throwing program soon
Good news for A’s prospect Freddy Tarnok: He will not require surgery after getting a second opinion
Tarnok came over from the Atlanta Braves in the Sean Murphy trade. He made just two appearances during the spring, but pitched well allowing four hits and a run over five innings. However, his last appearance came on March 3 and he was sidelined for the remainder of camp due to what was described as arm discomfort
Tarnok was shut down from throwing and there was concern that it could be something serious
Tarnok was initially part of the rotation competition and could have been in the mix had he stayed healthy
He will need time to build back up and barring any setbacks
could be in the picture at some point during the 2023 season
When the Atlanta Braves began their rebuild they focussed on stockpiling starting pitching
They did so knowing not all of them would pan out
but they played the percentages knowing some would and they’ve been rewarded with frontline starters like Mike Soroka
But it’s not over yet as they have eight more starting pitching prospects in their top 15 with six of them knocking on the door of the big leagues
Freddy Tarnok isn’t one of those knocking on the door just yet
and he just might have the most upside of them all
The Braves went well above the 2017 third-round draft slot value of $709,000 to sign Tarnok for $1.45 million banking on the potential of the lanky 6-foot-3 right-hander
he posted a 2.57 ERA in 8 starts with 10 strikeouts in 14 innings
Then at Single-A in 2018 he posted a 3.96 ERA in 77.1 innings with 83 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.435 with a high BB/9 of 4.8
he posted a 4.75 ERA in 106 innings (22 starts) with 91 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.368
He really took major strides forward in 2021 with a 3.68 ERA between High-A and Double-A and a WHIP of 1.145 with a K/9 of 13.4 and a BB/9 of 3.4
And what has a lot of Braves fans really excited is that he started to take off in the second half of the season when he moved up to Double-A
That’s why you can still dream on his potential at this point

and perhaps the one with the most upside is Freddy Tarnok.",{"html":"3pq"},{"type":"3pp","value":"3pr"},"When the Atlanta Braves began their rebuild they focussed on stockpiling starting pitching
Freddy Tarnok isn’t one of those knocking on the door just yet
What really has me excited about Freddy Tarnok is that he already has two above-average pitches in his fastball and curveball
The fastball sits in the mid-90s and has a ton of life
while his curveball has some really sharp biting action on it that constantly freezes hitters or gets them on top of the baseball
I was also impressed with his ability to consistently throw both of those pitches for strikes
I’d say he has more control than command — something he’ll certainly need to tighten up before getting to the big leagues
A change-up is his third pitch and it’s an average offering but a pitch that could be improved
I watched three or four starts and I honestly don’t know if I ever saw a slider (hard to tell without radar guns on the broadcast)
But that’s a pitch in his back pocket he can continue to develop
It’s a very athletic 6-foot-3 frame at 185 pounds
It’s possible he’s able to add a little more bulk but it’s not a necessity with him
The arm action is very long — somewhat similar to Madison Bumgarner but from the right side
And Tarnok pitches exclusively from the stretch
I do worry about him being able to consistently repeat that delivery with such a long arm path
which is why his BB/9 will likely always be around 3 or 4
I’m trying not to get too overhyped on Tarnok because he still has a lot to learn and a lot to prove at the minor league level
I do think he has the ceiling of a number two starter
Someone who could post a 3.25-3.50 ERA someday
Assuming he continues to throw strikes at the big league level
I’d project him to be a number three or four starter with an ERA around 3.8-4.2 with a BB/9 of 3.5
I believe he has the potential to be even better than that as he continues to grow
Just like I said with Joey Estes
there is absolutely no reason to rush Freddy Tarnok
I’d send him right back to Double-A to start 2022 and let him stay there the entire season
Maybe you give him a late call-up to Triple-A
or perhaps you even give him a call-up to the big leagues as a reliever to end the season
But I would not really expect Tarnok to get a shot as a starter in the big leagues until the second half of 2023
I know he’s on the 40-man roster and that might put pressure on the Braves to get him to the big leagues
But he’s still a raw talent and we’ve only seen the potential of that talent in half a season
Let him continue to grow and work on his game at the minors in 2022
Don’t hurt his development by rushing him to the big leagues when the Braves have several other starters ahead of him ready for a chance

they called up another top prospect on Tuesday in right-handed pitcher Freddy Tarnok
As the Atlanta Braves continue to spin the roster wheel
Due to injuries and two double-headers in one week, Alex Anthopoulos and the Atlanta Braves have been creative in trying to make sure they have fresh arms on the active roster
and Ian Anderson to make starts and then subsequently option them back down to Triple-A
Danny Young was added to the roster on Monday
Taking his place on the roster is 23-year-old pitching prospect Freddy Tarnok
The Braves went well over slot to sign him out of school with their third-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft
betting on the potential of the tall and lanky righty
He has had some ups-and-downs early in his professional career
but really started to put it together in 2021 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.145 WHIP in 73.1 innings with 109 strikeouts pitching at High-A and Double-A
he gave up 2 earned runs or less in all of them
That continued after he got called up to Gwinnett where he has a 2.03 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 5 starts with 26 strikeouts in 26.2 innings
It will be interesting to see how the Braves use him
He will most likely be there to clean up a potential rough start from Charlie Morton or Jake Odorizzi
But if he isn’t needed on Tuesday or Wednesday
and Max Fried and Kyle Wright aren’t ready to go on Thursday
we could see him start the Mets series finale
It’s also been brought up in the past that if Tarnok doesn’t work out as a starter — and that’s still the plan — he could be solid in the bullpen
The Braves could give him a look as a potential bullpen option down the stretch and in the postseason
Vaughn Grissom was called up a week ago after an injury to Orlando Arcia who was playing second base because of an injury to Ozzie Albies
Then Ehire Adrianza hit the injured list leaving the Braves without a backup infielder on the bench
They filled that void on Tuesday as well adding veteran infielder Ryan Goins to the roster
Goins has eight years of big league experience
At Gwinnett this year he’s slashing .221/.250/.272 with no home runs
He is simply with the team for an emergency situation until Adrianza returns
The Braves also claimed infielder Rylan Bannon off waivers from the Dodgers an optioned him to Triple-A
Bannon is 26 and was an 8th-round pick by the Lod Angeles Dodgers in 2017
The Dodgers traded him to Baltimore in the Manny Machado deal
and then the Dodgers picked him back up after the Orioles waived him earlier this year
He played 4 games for the Orioles this year and was 2-14
At the Triple-A level this year he’s slashing .229/.347/.407 with 11 home runs in 78 games
To make room on the 40-man roster the Braves designated Travis Demeritte for assignment
He had some big moments for the Braves earlier in the year and we certainly wish him the best going forward as he seems like a great human being
The depth of the Atlanta Braves is certainly being tested right now
they’ve passed that test with flying colors

The Oakland Athletics will begin the Cactus League schedule on February 25 against the Arizona Diamondbacks
manager Mark Kotsay disclosed his pitching plan for the opener with JP Sears and Freddy Tarnok both scheduled to pitch according to MLB.com’s Martín Gallegos
The rotation competition figures to be one of the biggest storylines of the spring and both Sears and Tarnok could figure into the mix with a strong performance

Cody Thomas & Spencer Watkins also outrighted off the 40-man
One of the Athletics’ promising young pitchers saw his season end today as Freddy Tarnok underwent the knife:
A's announce Freddy Tarnok underwent successful surgery on his right hip with Dr
Expected to be ready for the start of Spring Training
Tarnok was initially placed on the IL on August 14th with a strained calf muscle
We hadn’t heard anything about a hip problem until today so it comes as a slight surprise
With the season almost over there was no need to wait around for this procedure and the right-hander looks like he’ll be ready for spring training
He’ll be battling for a rotation spot after he got his feet wet in the big leagues this year
Tarnok made it into 5 games (1 start) and pitched to a 4.91 ERA over 14 2⁄3 innings
and Spenser Watkins all cleared waivers and are now off the 40-man roster:
A's also announce OFs Conner Capel and Cody Thomas and RHP Spenser Watkins cleared waivers and have been outrighted to Triple-A.This opens up three spots on the 40-man roster
They’re still in the organization but will probably not be getting another call up this year
Capel started the year on the major-league roster and was even in the season-opening lineup in the 2-hole but was sent down just a month into the season
Another quick call up that lasted less that two weeks and Capel has been in Vegas since
Thomas got his shot in early July and was doing all right in his second taste of the big leagues
Unfortunately he started striking out much more and the club sent him back down a couple of weeks ago
Reliever Spencer Watkins is the newest of the bunch to Oakland after the club claimed him off waivers three weeks ago from the Baltimore Orioles
He only made one appearance for the club when he made a spot start against the St
It did not go well as he pitched 4 1⁄3 innings while giving up 5 earned runs
and he was sent down to Triple-A immediately afterwards
three spots are now open on the 40-man roster and the club didn’t make these moves for no reason
It stands to reason that the club is looking to add someone to the roster in the next couple days when rosters expand to 28
with the biggest candidate being infielder Darell Hernaiz
who has a 4.12 ERA in 4 starts for Vegas since being promoted from Double-A
Or we may finally be seeing former first-round pick Logan Davidson
All we know is that we should be expecting some promotions within the next couple days
The renovation of the Roman Catholic church building in Tárnok
a town in Hungary of about 10,000 people residents in the vicinity of the capital city of Budapest
The renovation work on the church originally built between 1731–1737 started in early 2022
The reconstruction efforts were funded and carried out by a cooperation between the government
the Diocese of Székesvehérvár and the Slovak Self-Government of Tárnok; and the total cost of the project was 55 million HUF (€144,000)
The Sunday mass in the newly renovated church
was attended by Secretary of State for Churches
Minorities and Civil Affairs Miklós Soltész
Soltész told the congregation: ‘I implore you that
after this wonderful collaboration effort that had our church renovated and redecorated inside and out
so that the church may hold together the community through prayer.’
The state secretary went on to state that we once again live in times when we have to continuously strive for peace and for our families in our work
He added that a place of worship is only worth renovating if a local community of the faithful is there to pray in it

Now a member of the Oakland Athletics organization
Freddy Tarnok features an intriguing yet inconsistent arsenal
Freddy Tarnok was one of the Atlanta Braves’ top pitching prospects going into this offseason, and that made him one of the biggest names in the trade that brought Sean Murphy over from the Oakland Athletics
Tarnok broke out with a phenomenal 2021 season
but 2022 brought back many of the problems that previously plagued the supremely-talented young starter
When Tarnok was taken in the third round of the 2017 draft he was seen as a major project for the Braves to undertake
as his flashes of brilliance have been interspersed with far more common frustrations
Tarnok never produced in any substantial way as a starting pitcher through his first three professional seasons
but the blocks were building to what the future could hold for him
In 2021 his arsenal came together and suddenly the Braves had a 22-year old carving up Double-A hitters with a nasty three-pitch mix
Expectation immediately raged around Tarnok and he came into 2022 with the potential to cement himself as the system’s top pitching prospect
Tarnok is a fascinating prospect to keep an eye on in 2023
If he tightens up the spin on the curveball to get it back to the above-average-to-plus pitch it was in his earlier seasons
he suddenly has a viable major league arsenal
even though it picked up at the end of the season
though there is still some belief that his premium athleticism can continue to help it improve
It’s unclear whether Tarnok is ready for a long-term major league assignment at this stage but he is the one prospect that would be most likely to make the Braves regret trading him
His inconsistency makes his value and his long-term projections impossible to pin down
but at his best he is a strikeout machine that is able to survive despite inefficiencies with his strike-throwing
The left-handed reliever spent the first couple weeks pitching in AAA for the Atlanta Braves
The Oakland A’s claimed left-handed reliever Richard Lovelady off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Thursday
To make space for him on the 40-man roster
the A’s transferred Freddy Tarnok to the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain
Lovelady spent the first 7 years of his professional baseball career coming up in the Kansas City Royals system after getting drafted in the 10th round of the 2016 draft
the southpaw put up strong numbers utilizing mostly a slider-fastball-sinker combo
The Royals gave him two extended runs out of their major-league bullpen in 2019 and 2021 (as well as one inning in the shortened 2020 season)
Lovelady couldn’t finish the season and underwent Tommy John surgery on September 30
leading the Royals to non-tender him and re-sign him on a minor league deal in the offseason
throwing 4 scoreless innings in AAA with a whopping 9 strikeouts and just 1 walk
the Royals re-added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft before trading him to the Atlanta Braves for cash
the most recent of which resulted in 3 earned runs in just 0.2 innings
It’s unclear what move prompted the team to designate Lovelady for assignment
but he’ll now have a chance to continue his journey back to majors with the Oakland A’s
He’ll start out at AAA waiting for a major league bullpen spot to open up
the A’s transferred Freddy Tarnok to the 60-day IL
the A’s had placed the right-handed starter on the 15-day IL on March 30 with a shoulder strain on his throwing arm
It seems the issue is now considered serious enough that he’ll be out until at least early June
Following his third round selection in 2017 Freddy Tarnok showed little in the way of realizing his potential as he moved through the system
The conversion to pitcher following his time spent primarily as a shortstop in high school did not go well so despite his tremendous arm talent he struggled in his career
but a breakout campaign following a promotion to Triple-A has revived his prospect status and taken him higher than he has been as a professional
Midseason report card: His early struggles had dropped him all the way out of the Top 20 for Talking Chop coming into 2021, but his turnaround this season soared him right back up the list. He ranked 11th in the system for the midseason list
and his stock is up even more following the conclusion tot the season
though his debut in Rome had many wondering if he wouldn’t have those issues
As a reliever Tarnok was a South Atlantic League All Star and posted a 1.26 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 35 ⅔ innings
but a move to the starting rotation went poorly and he had a 6.26 ERA in 11 starts
He received a promotion to High-A in 2019 but his performance was tumultuous as he had a 6.49 ERA in 11 starts before going on the injured list
Following that things seemed to click a bit as he had a 2.98 ERA in 8 starts to end the season but a repeat of HIgh-A
and an injury that kept him out of the beginning of this season caused doubts to linger
Tarnok struggled in two relief appearances after coming off of the IL in early June
but then a move to starter was the trigger for a fantastic run
In five Rome starts he had a 3.52 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 23 innings and he earned a promotion to Double-A
The 22 year old then went on to be the Double-A South Champion Mississippi Braves’s best pitcher as he had a 2.60 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched
Tarnok ranked top 10 in all of minor league baseball with a 36.5% strikeout rate and posted his lowest walk rate at any full season level in his career at 8.3%
Those peripherals added up to a 2.27 FIP which ranked fifth among Double-A pitchers with 40+ innings
2022 Outlook: Freddy Tarnok certainly helped his stock this season and the progression is more than just statistics
He added a tick to his already above average fastball to push it to mid-to-upper 90’s with carry
His curveball has always been his go-to offspeed pitch but his changeup has also shaped into an above-average or better offering
This gives his three above-average to plus pitches and his approach has matured as well as he has begun to work up in the zone more often to allow his fastball the best chance of success
His command also took a half grade to full grade step forward
though given where he was at High-A it is still below average and will be the main determining factor in his ultimate role
He also will need to stay healthy which is something he has not done and his career high in innings is only 106
He has the look and stuff of a top-of-the-rotation starter
and he has plus athleticism that should allow him to continue to improve his command
He will need to do both of the above if he wants to reach that incredible ceiling
The A’s have added two of their top prospects to the active roster
As expected, the Oakland Athletics have selected the contracts of infielder Zack Gelof and Tyler Soderstrom
The move adds two of the team’s top 3 prospects to the active roster
Both Gelof and Soderstrom are expected to make their major league debuts Friday night
Oakland placed Richard Lovelady and Manny Pina on the injured list
The Oakland A’s have selected Tyler Soderstrom and Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas
placed Richard Lovelady on the 15-day injured list
placed Manny Piña on the 10-day injured list and outrighted Tyler Wade to Las Vegas
Soderstrom is Oakland’s No. 1 prospect per MLB Pipeline and has seen action at catcher and first base this season. The A’s drafted him with their first round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft
Soderstrom has spent all of the season at Triple A Las Vegas where he is hitting .254/.303/.536 with 37 extra-base hits
including 20 home runs albeit with an 85 wRC+ in 304 plate appearances
MLB Pipeline has Gelof ranked as the A’s No
He too has been at Las Vegas for all of the 2023 season and has put up impressive numbers hitting .304/.401/.529 with 12 home runs and a 122 wRC+ in 308 plate appearances
Tarnok began the season with a strained right shoulder
He made six rehab appearances where he posted a 1.66 ERA

"It's all very new to me," Tarnok said. "I've always thrown pretty hard and my high school team needed some pitching (last year). They tried me out on the mound and I just went with it."
At 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, Tarnok is a wiry pitcher who has a fastball that can reach 95 mph. As a senior, he was 7-0 with a 0.66 ERA. He pitched 53 innings, had 63 strikeouts and walked 11. He was also the Sharks' top hitter. He had a .393 average with 11 doubles and two home runs.
Tarnok said he likely will sign with the Braves and report to rookie camp. The approximate pick value for his slot is $709,000. He was committed to the University of Tampa.
"I'm pretty positive I'm going to sign and start playing," Tarnok said.
Tarnok said he wasn't sure where he would go in the draft. He had an idea that it would be early on the second day. Riverview coach Bill Leiby had no doubt that Tarnok would be a high-round pick. He saw him improve quickly as a pitcher.
"This was something we expected way back in October," Leiby said. "When you can get it up to 95 (mph) and touch 97, things are going to change for you. He's good all over, but he's going to be especially good as a pitcher."
Tarnok wasn't the only local player who ended up with the Braves on Tuesday. Former Sickles pitcher Troy Bacon was taken by Atlanta in the fourth round (110th overall). As a freshman at Santa Fe CC last year, Bacon was used as a reliever. He pitched 44 innings, struck out 59, had 15 saves and a 1.23 ERA.
This season Bacon pitched 40 innings and had 64 strikeouts and eight saves, all in relief. His approximate pick value is $487,400.
• With the 126th overall pick, the Giants selected University of Tampa right-hander Garrett Cave. Cave, who is from South Sumter High in Bushnell, transferred from Florida International prior to this season. He threw 61 ⅓ innings this season and had 84 strikeouts and a 4.23 ERA.
• Another area pitcher was taken in the fifth round. Former Alonso left-hander Nick Kennedy, brother of current Calvary Christian junior Eric Kennedy, was drafted 146th overall by the Rockies. Kennedy is a red-shirt sophomore at Texas. He was 8-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 53 ⅔ innings pitched this season.

News COINTELEGRAPH IN YOUR SOCIAL FEEDDepartment heads at Coinbase have weighed in on the market downturn amid solvency concerns surrounding Three Arrows Capital
saying the crypto exchange had “no financing exposure” to these companies
In a Wednesday blog post, head of Coinbase Institutional Brett Tejpaul, head of prime finance Matt Boyd, and head of credit and market risk Caroline Tarnok said Coinbase had not engaged in the “types of risky lending practices” exhibited by Three Arrows Capital
claiming the firms utilized “insufficient risk controls.” According to the three co-authors of the post
crypto companies faced the possibility of insolvency caused by “unhedged bets,” large investments in Terra and overleveraging with venture capital firms
“The issues here were foreseeable and actually credit specific
not crypto specific in nature,” said Tejpaul
“Many of these firms were overleveraged with short term liabilities mismatched against longer duration illiquid assets
We believe these market participants were caught up in the frenzy of a crypto bull market and forgot the basics of risk management.”
