From January 1 to April 20, Thailand saw 11.2 million foreign visitors, generating about 540 billion baht in revenue — a 0.52% increase year-on-year.Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Saturday called a meeting with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to discuss measures to stimulate tourism, especially during the upcoming low season, as current tourism numbers have not met expectations due to several factors.
Paetongtarn stated that the recent tourism figures have fallen short of targets, due to external factors such as the global economy, and internal issues such as recent earthquakes and domestic rumors affecting Chinese tourist confidence. These are key challenges the government must address with appropriate response measures.
“One major point of concern is that the current quarter marks the beginning of the low season. In the long term, the government is pursuing the creation of man-made destinations, but in the short term, other urgent measures are needed,” she said.
These measures may include tourism campaigns, collaborative promotions with online platforms, and partnerships across various sectors, she added.
Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, proposed the “Let’s Go Halves” scheme for tourism, where the government would cover 50% of domestic travel expenses, and the public would pay the other 50%. A preliminary framework has been presented to and approved by the Prime Minister.
Sorawong added that the ministry is currently reviewing details on how people will register and redeem benefits, and what channels should be used. The “TukTuk” app has entered discussions as a potential platform, though an open-access system is also being considered.
“The goal is to finalize all operational details before submitting the proposal to the Cabinet for approval by mid-May 2025,” he said. “The budget, previously discussed with the Ministry of Finance, is set at 3.5 billion baht. The project’s launch has been pushed from May to June 2025 to better align with the start of the low season.”

Although Chinese tourist numbers declined after Songkran, mainly due to current travel conditions in and out of China, long-haul markets such as the UK and India have shown strong and consistent growth.
The minister emphasized that China remains a key market, and he has instructed the ministry’s permanent secretary to hold meetings with industry stakeholders to devise strategies for reviving Chinese tourism.

Experts think it won’t be until May that the full impacts of a U.S.-China tariff tit-for-tat hit the ports of Seattle and Tacoma
given the weekslong transit times between the sparring nations
But port officials and port-dependent businesses are already feeling the early effects
They’re also bracing for what could be a substantial decline not only in import and export activity
That includes longshoremen who handle the cargo and truckers who haul goods into and out of the ports.

Port officials said they were still analyzing vessel data and couldn’t yet say whether April had seen a marked decrease in vessel traffic

shows the number of arriving container ships berthing at Seattle and Tacoma terminals from April 1 to April 24 was down 12% compared with the same period in 2024
Arrivals of ships carrying automobiles in April was down 36%

The decision came just hours after India imposed a series of punitive trade measures against Islamabad
including a complete ban on goods from or routed through Pakistan and restrictions on Pakistani ships entering Indian ports
The announcement by Pakistan’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs stated that all Indian flag carriers are now banned from docking at Pakistani ports
and Pakistani vessels would also not be allowed at Indian ports
The ministry said these steps are necessary to safeguard the country’s maritime sovereignty
It also stated that any exception to this policy would be considered on a case-by-case basis
India’s response to the Pahalgam attack- which killed 26 people
The Indian authorities alleged Pakistan’s involvement in the assault
though Islamabad has firmly rejected these claims
calling them baseless and politically motivated
Pakistan has instead demanded an international and transparent investigation into the incident
India announced the suspension of all imports from Pakistan

PARIS (AP) — France said Tuesday it was expelling 12 Algerian diplomatic officials a day after Algeria announced the expulsion of the same number of French officials in escalating tensions between the two countries.
In addition to what French officials called the “symmetrically” calibrated expulsion of 12 Algerian officials, France’s ambassador to Algiers also was being recalled home for consultations, a statement from the French presidential palace said Tuesday.
It said Algerian authorities were responsible for “a brutal deterioration in our bilateral relations.”
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on X that Algeria’s decision was “unjustified” and that dialogue “cannot go one-way.”
French counterterrorism prosecutors said three Algerian nationals in total were arrested last week and handed preliminary charges of “kidnapping or arbitrary detention … in connection with a terrorist undertaking.”
The group is allegedly involved in the April 2024 kidnapping of an Algerian influencer, Amir Boukhors, or Amir DZ, a known critic of the Algerian government with 1.1 million followers on TikTok.
The Algerian foreign affairs ministry said the arrest of the consular official as part of the kidnapping case aimed to “humiliate Algeria, with no consideration for the consular status of this agent, disregarding all diplomatic customs and practices, and in flagrant violation of the relevant conventions and treaties.”
The latest surge in acrimony followed a brief easing of tensions about two weeks ago when French President Emmanuel Macron called Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune. French officials said at the time that they had agreed to revive bilateral relations.

President Donald Trump has threatened more retaliatory tariffs on the European Union this morning, proposing via social media a new, 200% levy on all EU champagnes, wines and spirits sent to the U.S.

Russia has announced restrictions on exports of enriched uranium to the USA
The temporary ban is in response to US restrictions on imports of Russian uranium products which came into force earlier this year
The Russian government announced the ban on its official website on 15 November as an amendment to Government Decree No 313 of 9 March 2022
It covers exports "to the United States or under foreign trade contracts concluded with persons registered in the jurisdiction of the United States"
Exemptions will be made for deliveries under one-off licences issued by the Russian Federal Service for Technical and Export Control
"The decision was made on the instructions of the President in response to the restriction imposed by the United States for 2024-2027, and from 2028 - a ban on the import of Russian uranium products," the Russian government said
"Vladimir Putin instructed to analyse the possibility of restricting supplies to foreign markets of strategic raw materials in September at a meeting with the Government."
Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said the ban was legal and the expected "tit-for-tat response to actions of the US authorities"
Deliveries of Russian uranium to countries other than the USA "will continue without changes
on conditions agreed with customers and subject to requirements of national laws"
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Tass that "in cases where it serves our interests
Russia’s Federal Service for Technical and Export Control may decide to exclude certain items from this list of bans"
but said the government had assessed the implications and consequences of the "absolutely reciprocal" countermeasures
"But the key point is that this should fully align with our interests and not undermine them
That is the basis for what has been done," he said
US President Joe Biden signed the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act in May after the bill was passed unanimously by the US Senate
The prohibition came into effect in August
Waivers may be granted to allow the import of limited amounts of Russian-origin LEU
US enrichment company Centrus received such a waiver from the US Department of Energy in July
allowing it to import low-enriched uranium from Russia for delivery to US customers in 2024 and 2025
Tenex - a Russian government-owned company - is Centrus' largest supplier of low-enriched uranium for delivery to its US and international customers pursuant to a 2011 contract
Tenex has now notified Centrus that its general licence to export the material to the USA has been rescinded under the decree
and that it is now required to obtain a specific export licence from the Russian authorities for each of its remaining 2024 shipments to Centrus and for shipments in 2025
"Tenex has informed Centrus of its plan to seek the necessary export licences, in a timely manner, to allow it to meet its delivery obligations for the pending Centrus orders," Centrus said in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission
The US company said it will be in communication with its customers whose pending orders may be affected and is assessing actions to mitigate adverse impacts
"If TENEX is unable to secure export licences for our pending or future orders
it would affect our ability to meet our delivery obligations to our customers and would have a material adverse effect on our business
and competitive position," the company said
According to US Energy Information Administration data
owners and operators of US nuclear power plants purchased a total of 51.6 million pounds U3O8 (19,848 tU) of deliveries from domestic and foreign suppliers in 2023
Most of this came from Canada (27% of total deliveries)
Australia (22%) and Kazakhstan (22%): Russian-origin material accounted for 12% of total deliveries
Domestically produced material accounted for 5%
But while US facilities provided 28% of the uranium enrichment services - measured in separative work units
or SWU - purchased by US owners and operators in 2023
