On unusually warm conditions for this time of year, Tura was part of a thrilling three-man breakout pack, including Galen Rupp (USA) and Eric Kiptanui (Kenya), that constantly jostled for positions in the final quarter of the race.
But the Ethiopian had more to give, and kicked on from his rivals with 7km to go.
The 24-year-old, who was not selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer, finally showed some emotion and celebrated the victory with his arms raised before crossing the finish line.
Local hero and 2017 winner Rupp finished +0.23 back in second, while Kiptanui held on for third.

Madonna and Child in a Garden, National Gallery of Art, Washington
Cosimo Tura, The Virgin and Child Enthroned, mid-1470s. Oil and egg on poplar, 239 x 101.6 cm. The National Gallery, London.
The Virgin and Child Enthroned, The National Gallery, London
I first discovered Tura in London at the National Gallery so many years ago. The colors alone, this palette of pink and brightest of green, and then the three blues. Tura is a genius as far as color and unusual combinations.
His stand on architecture is marvellous. His invention of scale and detail, yes detail, detail, detail. Here is the true believer in “more is more,” yet gracefully without being sloppy.
I say he is about one hundred years before his time, his mannerist potential is so obvious. Cosimo Tura is certainly the Father, éminence grise, the earliest visionary of Mannerism.
What about her head and face? What about the forehead? Again, a massive wonderful bald head, highlighted with an intricate hairstyle only starting very far back.
Cosimo Tura, Madonna and Child in a Garden, c. 1460/1470, Tempera (and possibly oil) on poplar panel, 24 x 17 x 3 1/4 inches with frame. National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.
He made and designed all sorts of decorative arts and jewellery.
O.K., enough, enough, I could go on forever. This dark and unusual spot in art history has been and remains an obsession of mine.
I am pleased that Isabella Stewart Gardener appreciated Cosimo Tura. The Circumcision, a tondo, was acquired by Isabella in 1901. This is enough for now . . .

The historic Garo Labour Corps monument at Lower Babupara in Tura
The A·chik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO) has written to the Urban Affairs Minister over what it called “serious discrepancies” in the tender allotment process for the controversial beautification of the World War I cenotaph in Babupara
The project is valued at Rs 2 crore and has proven controversial as various civil society groups claimed that the state government had not carried out consultations with the general public ahead of the demolition of the original cenotaph
alleged that the ‘earnest money deposit’ from one of three contractors
nearly a month past the October 18 deadline set in the tender notice
the document lacks the mandatory authentication of the CEO of the Tura Municipal Board,”further casting doubt on the legitimacy of the process.” These irregularities raise grave concerns about procedural violations
lack of transparency and potential favouritism in the award of the contract
The AYWO is therefore pushing for an impartial inquiry
an immediate halt to the project until the investigation is completed
disciplinary action against officials responsible for the “lapses” and corrective measures to restore public trust

Students protest outside the entrance of NEHU Tura campus last year: HP Archives
The current turmoil that is surrounding the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong campus demonstrates the need for a full-fledged independent central university in Tura
a Garo Hills-based organisation said today
The United A·chik Socio Economic Justice Forum (UASEJF) said that it has reissued its demand for a separate university following the physical assault on a NEHU Shillong Assistant Professor
though a campus has also been set up in Tura where a few courses are offered
The UASEJF condemned the “barbarity” of the attack on the member of staff and said that in the past Garo students and those from elsewhere have also been made to feel uncomfortable due to the Shillong campus’ “volatile environment”
The group called for a full investigation into the assault
full-fledged status for NEHU Tura and a “decentralisation” of higher education in the state

Adia Tamar Whitaker and Àṣẹ Dance Theater connected African villages to US streets
There was a moment during this show when I sat in Dance Mission Theater and found myself thinking about, of all things, Taylor Mac’s A 24-Decade History of Popular Music
One could easily argue that Adia Tamar Whitaker and Àṣẹ Dance Theater have created a two-hour-long speed-run through the history of Black music—from the villages Africa to the churches and streets of the US
the only thing that changed was the choice of clothing
The aforementioned creative entities are the ones behind Following the Road to Ose Tura
The project is described as “Whitaker’s dance and music response to The Road to Ose Tura,” a dance film created by the late Efeya Sampson
Officially referring to it as a “response” seems to connote that that show is some sort of challenge to Sampson’s work
it’s a pretty overt tribute to the late artist and beliefs from the Motherland (she’s credited as co-creator of Following…)
The show consists of multiple vignettes that were performed over three days at various outdoor locations around SF
I had to imagine what site-specificity lent to the overall aesthetic
as many of the works seem designed to be performed in the dark
one has to wonder how easy (or not) it would be to follow the subtle narrative about accepting mortality as a part of life
I caught the finale performance at Dance Mission
which combined all the work from the previous three days into one show
even I’d like to think I’d have been enlightened to a degree
As our troupe gathered in the initial blackout
one of the first things we heard was the plea “Will you help me die?” Initially shocking to western ears
This was the first of many movements that regarded death as something to embrace
but in the sense that it’s the logical conclusion to birth
Consider that Ifá is one of the many African religions that travelled with the slaves across the Atlantic
those African beliefs had to be hidden behind the Catholicism forced upon the slaves
and later influencing practices like Día de Muertos
death (in and of itself) is not something to fear
This was combined with an Ifá story about a group of trees merging into one strong oak
co-creator Whitaker wrote a Shayna Strype-animated short—which we watched—that uses this story as a parable for her own thyroidectomy.) Among all of this
we were transported from one spiritual world to another
drawing a direct evolutionary line between the dancing and singing in the villages to the Christian-influenced celebrations that have defined Black American gospel and worship as a unique entity unto itself
dances of weak patients in hospital gowns with “shoulder pads” made of pill bottles
There were projected films of prayer rituals in temples and on public streets
We witnessed joy in the most morbid of topics without falling into nihilism
All in a series of eye-popping costumes (for which there is
Whitaker and Àṣẹ Dance’s tribute to Sampson and her faith was akin to one of the most joyful funerals one could ever attend
It’s probably no coincidence that this final
amalgamated performance took place on a Sunday
when so much of the show acts as an under-the-radar history lesson for all the “joyful noise” gospel that has become the Black Church’s trademark
Not being familiar with Sampson’s choreography
I can’t say where it stops and Whitaker’s begins
but perhaps the two are meant to be thought of as a fusion; akin to a child that is their own person
Of the dancing—modern and folk—it was energetic, fluid, and well-complemented by the vocals and live musical accompaniment (which included a banjo, the staple of white Southerners that’s finally having its African origins reclaimed)
The vocals jump back-and-forth from melancholy pleas to celebratory wails
Even though the show (at two hours) goes longer than the 90min its creators planned
it makes for an immersive experience (complete with audience movement to different areas at one point) that’s best experienced in-person
Every tax-deductible donation helps us grow to cover the issues that mean the most to our community
Become a 48 Hills Hero and support the only daily progressive news source in the Bay Area
How this show had such low levels with so many bare faces in a stuffy theatre
What I can say is that one of this year’s better theatre experiences was watching this physical tribute to someone I’ve never met
The show connects centuries of African and Black American faith and dance into a glorious hybrid that bursts with life and color at every moment
the point of the entire show is that every ending is a welcome beginning to something new

April 7: Tura MDC Bernard Marak has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the preservation of Garo heritage and reconstruction of thebTura World War I Cenotaph
it gives me the unique opportunity to meet and interact with a wide range of chess enthusiasts and promoters from all corners of the world
From top professional organizers who have everything planned and sorted to the very last detail to the passionate ones who are filled with the vitality of the game and can arrange anything and everything on the spot
While everyone has their unique methods and practices
it is a joy to work with each and everyone and enjoy the process and needless to say
Aditya Sur Roy from ChessBase India visited Tura in Meghalaya where I met some amazing people who play chess
I share my experience of my trip to the far northeastern part of the country
a charming and quiet town in the state of Meghalaya adorned by the hospitality of its people and raised around the West Garo Hills.
the northeast always holds a special place for me and I have traveled to Meghalaya before but this was the first time I was traveling to this part of the state
After a three-hour flight to Guwahati from Hyderabad
I met the members of the Garo Hills Chess Association(GHCA) and some of the players who were having a great time at the chess booth of the National Science Day Celebration event organized by the State Council of Science Technology and Environment
I was amazed to know how so many people are working towards the growth and development of chess and was glad to meet many enthusiasts who visited the booth and played some chess.
While we were brainstorming ideas of how we can grow the game all of a sudden a plan came up to organize a small blitz tournament and I will be happy to cover it and get a chance to meet and interact with more local players
And in no time everything was decided and from our side
we promised to give a Gukesh DVD - Attack like a Super Grandmaster to the champion
C Park which had a dedicated chess arena built by IAS Swapnil Tembe
It was heartwarming to see all the players and the organizers got together to arrange everything from bringing in tables and arranging the boards and start the tournament
We saw twenty-four chess enthusiasts play the fun tournament but with high energy and competitive spirits
we saw many people crossing by taking a moment to stand for some time and enjoy the games
it was amazing to see some veterans flexing their skills
local star A Sangma clinched the tournament winning the Gukesh DVD - Attack like a Super Grandmaster to the champion and a cash prize of Rs.1,000
There was an intense battle for the 2nd and the 3rd position
Pringprang Ch Marak and Diego Ch Mara finished second and third and won cash prizes of Rs
It was a fun-filled event and we enjoyed it a lot
We wish all the participants all the very best and hope more players join in every tournament.

The Achik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has demanded the State government to shelve plans to shift the Government Printing Press from Tura
there are ongoing attempts to displace the only Government Printing Press located in Tura
“The Government Printing Press at Tura has historically served the entire Garo Hills region
we have received verified and disturbing reports that the entire premises have been handed over to the Tourism Department without ensuring a suitable replacement or alternative infrastructure for the Printing and Stationery Department,” ASPF general secretary Bernita Marak said
Marak in a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma
cabinet minister in charge of the department AL Hek and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh pointed out that the press office
and Accounts—was functioning in its original premises
despite there was already a serious shortage of storage space for raw paper
forcing staff to stack materials in corridors
This not only presented a disorganized image but also risked damage to essential materials and safety risk for staff
While the department has been forced to shift and operate from the old Orchid Lodge building under temporary and grossly inadequate arrangements
the space provided is unsuitable for operating machines or storing printing materials and cannot accommodate over 80 staff members – effectively rendering the press non-functional
Stating that only a few machines will be functional after the relocation
despite the fact that the printing operations are a highly coordinated team effort requiring both skilled human resources and a full complement of industrial machinery
the ASPF said partial functioning will paralyse productivity
the press operations require a 100 KVA transformer and a 100 KVA generator for backup during emergency printing tasks and therefore shifting
and re-establishing proper industrial-grade electrical and internet connections is critical for safe
A hasty move into an unfit temporary facility will jeopardize both safety and service delivery
The ASPF also said that the promised construction of a new Printing Press complex
reportedly planned near Holy Cross Hospital
Tura to be funded by the Tourism Department
we were categorically informed that no funds have been sanctioned
nor is there any concrete timeline or plan for implementation,” it added
Expressing shock that the machinery and materials of the Tura Printing Press are allegedly being shifted to other district headquarters
the ASPF said this signals a backdoor effort to dismantle and relocate the press out of Garo Hills
vacancies arising from the retirement of Garo Hills-based employees are being deliberately left unfilled
in stark contrast to other regions where posts are immediately replaced – reflecting systemic bias against local candidates
This glaring disparity in recruitment only strengthens our suspicion of a larger systemic neglect of Garo Hills
The group wants the government to provide an official assurance and written commitment that the Press will remain in Garo Hills
and that status quo will be maintained and urgent construction of a permanent and fully-equipped complex in Tura with all necessary infrastructure
and storage as well as immediate filling of all vacant posts with qualified local candidates to ensure employment opportunities for the Garo community and smooth functioning of the department
Asking the Tourism Department to immediately release funds and begin the construction of the building as per the agreement made the ASPF said that the project should be executed within the current financial year with regular updates shared with public representatives and civil society while the temporary arrangement at Orchid Lodge be immediately upgraded to support full-fledged operations
“We want to re-emphasize that the people of Garo Hills will not remain silent in the face of this gross injustice
Should these demands not be fulfilled in a timely and transparent manner
the ASPF will be compelled to launch a region-wide democratic agitation
The ASPF said it will not allow marginalization or institutional dismantling in Garo Hills
“The Government Printing Press is not just a building; it is a symbol of regional equity
and representation of the people of Garo Hills
And we demand immediate government intervention with transparency,” the group added
