However, we may receive compensation from retailers and/or from purchases of products through these links. Photograph: Nena FarrellThe freestanding station really is handy, though. Not only does it charge your device when it's not in use, it prevents the top-heavy device from toppling over. (Did I knock over two different stick vacuums just this morning? Perhaps.) Other stick vacuums sometimes come with holding stations that require you to drill into a wall to mount them, but I much prefer saving home improvement projects for things like frames and furniture rather than a vacuum. My only complaint is that my vacuum didn't respond to the base station's suction right away. I had to help open the canister on the vacuum before trying to stick it on the station, but after a few uses and my playing around with opening and closing the attached dustbin, it got better at opening correctly and presented no other issues. If you see a similar problem, I recommend opening and closing the dustbin on your own a few times to loosen it up. All in all, I'm pretty impressed with how clean my house is with the help of the Tineco Pure One Station 5, and how well it cleans my hardwood floors, rugs, and carpeted stairs. If you want something mobile but dread the idea of dumping out a tiny canister every time you use it, this cordless vacuum really hits the sweet spot of convenience in both vacuuming and emptying such a compact, powerful device. It is the essential source of information and ideas that make sense of a world in constant transformation The WIRED conversation illuminates how technology is changing every aspect of our lives—from culture to business The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking \"Wet/dry vacs and mops are all better suited to clean hard floors while vacuuming is better suited for rugs or carpets then wet/dry vacs are better since they combine the functionality of both vacuuming and mopping.\" Some wet-dry vacuums can be used on low-pile rugs you'll absolutely need to keep a vacuum on hand Vacuums are also multi-functional and can be used to clean cobwebs from the ceiling or used as a hand vacuum to clean messes on your couch They're also perfect for cleaning up debris quickly compared to a wet-dry vacuum that takes time to set up and use vacuum mops can vacuum and mop simultaneously thereby cutting your house cleaning time down considerably Some have more features than others that can assist with cleaning more efficiently Most of the vac-mops we tested come with a small bottle of cleaning solution only a small amount of cleaning solution should be added to the water Some vac-mops have lines on the clean water container that showcase how much cleaning solution to add It is not advised to use cleaning detergent or a solution that is not recommended by the vac-mop company itself you don't necessarily need to use a cleaning solution to clean your house with vac-mops every single time It's hard to say if a wet-dry vacuum is better than a mop — it's just different you have to expend a lot more energy and strength to remove stains on the floor have ultra or max modes that expel more water and solution to help break down a tough stain look for wet-dry vacuums with \"higher wattage or horsepower [as it] generally indicates better performances when dealing with wet messes.\" she advises folks not to get rid of their mop as she believes it can provide a deeper clean than a wet-dry vacuum vacuuming first and then using a mop can be more effective since vacuuming removes debris and dirt and a mop can focus on removing stains and grime,\" she explains.  wet-dry robot vacuums aren't going to give you as deep of a mopping experience as a regular wet-dry vacuum but they'll keep your house fairly clean between deep cleaning sessions you can use wet-dry vacuums on hardwood floors as long as they're sealed Some wet-dry vacuums have more water output than others the water output is not too significant to cause concern you don't need to mop your hardwood floors more than once a week Always check to see that the wheels don't cause any scratches on your hardwood floors That did not occur with any of the wet-dry vacuums we tested we did find some wheels glided more smoothly on our hardwood floors than others like the rubber wheels on the Tineco S7 Pro some cleaning solutions could damage your hardwood floors over time so it's probably best to use the cleaning solution provided by the wet-dry vacuum only once a month.  A wet-dry vacuum will not replace the best carpet cleaners and we don't recommend using the wet-dry vacuum for cleaning medium and high-pile carpets There are some models that can be used on low-pile area rugs like the Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro They're designed to not soak the rug but rather to use water and cleaning solution to clean the top fibers and suction some of the water into the dirty water tank Quick pro tip: clean the rugs first before using the wet-dry vacuum on your hard floors to ensure that you're not moving dust and debris from the hard floors to the rugs a broom can't quite suction debris the way a vacuum can while neither leave floors sparkling clean and deodorized like a mop which inevitably tend to push grime around the floor and even harbor bacteria The best wet-dry vacuums vacuum and mop your floor at the same time in a more efficient They streamline the chore and cut the time spent cleaning in half It's practically become a miracle tool in my home It reminds us that wet-dry vacuums don't have to be complicated or expensive to clean hard floors well I noticed a few updates when I got my hands on the upgraded S7 Pro The materials alone are more deluxe and better quality from thick rubber wheels to the hard plastic body that looks like wood Then there's the LCD screen that is outfitted with a Tineco Assistant an animated character that utilizes instructional videos to show you how to set up and use the wet-dry vacuum It informs you of everything from battery power to self-cleaning measures to take The self-propelling feature and a swiveling head make it easy to maneuver this wet-dry vacuum and reach tight spaces without having to move furniture Edge cleaning has been improved on both sides of the vacuum head so that it reaches within one centimeter of a baseboard The iLoop Smart Sensor detects dirt and stains on the floor that even the headlights can't show you and increases the suction as you go over the area A "loop" on the LCD screen is colored red when the floor is dirty and then turns blue when the floor is clean with the Tineco before the loop turns blue Max and ultra provide more water for tough stains and the suction mode sucks up liquid spills It generally took only one or two passes of the Tineco Floor One S7 Pro to pick up any kind of debris I can verify that the dirty water tank was full of dark brown liquid by the end which is both gross and highly satisfying.  There are two self-cleaning modes: a quick one that takes two minutes and a super self-cleaning mode that takes six minutes The brush roll is also dried in this process The battery lasted much longer than I needed to clean my house and the clean water tank wasn't empty either Read our full Tineco Floor One S7 Pro review.  Wet-dry vacuums are finally becoming more affordable without having to compromise on cleaning performance The Eureka NEW400 Wet Dry can be used on all hard floor surfaces and is self-propelled with good water output The edge cleaning and cleaning capability along the front of the vacuum head is a bit average in that there's about an inch of dry floor between the vacuum head and the wall It picked up larger debris like cereal in one pass and dirt especially if they'd hardened on the floor needed three to five passes of the vacuum to clean them thoroughly.  which was not long enough to get through my 1600-square-foot home At least it saves battery when I paused cleaning and put it back upright It takes about five hours for the battery to fully charge which means the clean water tank empties quickly The self-cleaning system is decent but not perfect by any means I had to remove some hair and debris from the brush roll by hand While we might not accept some of these drawbacks for more expensive wet-dry vacuums it really isn't too much of a hassle to dispense dirty water and add clean water It's worth noting that every single vacuum on this list requires some additional hand cleaning of brush rolls like a battery life notification screen and three different cleaning modes (ECO we found that it did fare better in terms of cleaning than its cheaper counterpart It even has a self-drying brushroll feature which blows cool air onto the brushroll which speeds up drying and prevents odors The Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vac may be corded and lacks self-propulsion This wet-dry vacuum can vacuum and mop both hard floors and rugs and comes with multiple brush rolls and cleaning solutions for different floor types Unlike some of the other wet-dry vacuums on this list you control the amount of water and solution output with a trigger located on the handle but pet owners may like the control over choosing how much water and solution is used to deep clean floors and rugs that may be more impacted by a pet The Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro fits easily under cabinets and has great edge cleaning it doesn't do well picking up debris when going backward and could do better at suctioning water from the floor It often left hard floors more wet (compared to the other wet-dry vacuums I tested) which indicates that it will take longer for floors to dry.  you'll want to clean your rug first so that you know you're not bringing dirt and grime from hard floors onto the rug A pet hair strainer inside the dirty water tank keeps pet hair and debris from mixing with the dirty water and makes it easily disposable the cleaning process is probably the most involved among the units I tired and not really a self-cleaning system in the traditional sense and then turn on the machine and lean it backward so that the vacuum suctions the water from the base through the vacuum head Bissell suggested you do this multiple times to clean the brush roll and I had to hand wash the brush roll to get it clean Though the Narwal S20 Pro is angled as my "Easiest to Clean" pick it's actually my second favorite wet-dry vacuum that I've ever tested The Narwal S20 Pro sports a slightly different design than most: the clean water tank is found on the backside of the vacuum head and there's an opening for detergent (a bottle is provided) atop the vacuum head but it clearly displays the various cleaning modes and self-cleaning instructions I'm glad to report that the Narwal S20 Pro has a smart dirt-detection feature This means the vacuum adjusts the suction and mopping capabilities depending on how dirty the floor is I ran most of my tests in the smart dirt detect mode and found that it did a fantastic job cleaning all substances from hardwood and laminate floors in a single pass but the dirty water tank didn't need to be emptied until the 21-minute mark the exact moment I was done cleaning my entire home The Narwal S20 Pro's edge cleaning is better than any other wet-dry vacuum I have tested There was no dry space between the side of the vacuum and the wall and only a quarter of an inch of dry space between the front of the vacuum head and the wall The only drawback I found in the cleaning capabilities was when I tried to clean in reverse and coffee and cereal got stuck behind the wheels Although I prefer the smart dirt detect mode The max mode can only be utilized when you hold the trigger constantly and it occurred when I leaned the handle to the ground 180 degrees to clean under my bed and other furniture When the Narwal S20 Pro is in this position it automatically increases the suction and mopping capabilities because it knows you're likely cleaning in an area that is dustier and harder to reach I appreciated that the dirty water tank separated debris from the dirty water I was able to remove the debris in the trash and not dump it down the drain with the dirty water as is the case with many other wet-dry vacuums This vacuum is outfitted with self-cleaning and self-drying features There wasn't any dirt or debris under the vacuum head after the self-cleaning cycle I'll find dust and some hair under the vacuum head so this leads me to believe that the self-cleaning feature is thorough The brushrolls were completely dry an hour after I ran the self-drying cycle this doesn't usually happen with most wet-dry vacuums cementing its spot as a top recommendation for its hands-off cleaning approach Read our full Narwal S20 Pro Vacuum Mop review. the Shark HydroVac Messmaster Cordless wet-dry vacuum is easy to maneuver around your home You'll find both of these positive features helpful when using this wet-dry vacuum especially since the Shark HydroVac Messmaster doesn't have a dirt detection system and the battery lasts only 25 minutes It should be noted that I wasn't quite able to clean my 1,600-square-foot house in 25 minutes and that the clean water tank ran out at the 12-minute mark making this better suited for smaller homes At least I was able to recharge the battery enough within 30 minutes to finish cleaning my house One of the other most notable features of this wet-dry vacuum is that you can use it on hard floors and rugs which makes me inclined to believe that it'll only lightly wash your rugs you'll have to go with the Ecowell Lulu Quick Clean P05 or a heavy-duty carpet cleaner While the Shark HydroVac Messmaster aptly vacuumed and mopped away debris like leaves it struggled to clean thicker substances like barbecue sauce I had to go over these substances multiple times so there wouldn't be any leftover residue I should note that coffee and larger debris like cereal often got caught behind the wheels when vacuuming backward Although the Shark HydroVac Messmaster Cordless doesn't have a self-drying system There is a debris catcher within the dirty water tank and even though it doesn't catch everything A cleaning brush would've made it easier to clean the debris catcher The Shark HydroVac Messmaster is also the next generation of the HydroVac Pro XL The specs are essentially the same; just the body colors changed we did find the battery lasted just a bit longer but there were no real innovation upgrades here The Ecowell Lulu Quick Clean P05 can be used on hard floors and rugs which makes it particularly versatile Although it doesn't come with a cleaning solution this self-propelled wet-dry vacuum has the right kind of water output that doesn't soak your hard floors or your rugs — even when you're in Max mode You can always use the extra water trigger if you need more water.  and the Ecowell Lulu picks up debris just as well going forward as it does backward on all types of floors this wet-dry vacuum suctions debris at the same time that it cleans the rug with water the Ecowell Lulu Quick Clean P05 picked up debris of all sizes with one or two passes on any floor type Viscous substances took two to three passes while liquids took one pass for the wet-dry vacuum to suction it up.  I wish the machine turned off when stood upright and that it had the capability to lean further back so it could reach more areas under beds and shelves and I still had a little bit of water left in the tank by the time the battery died The Ecowell Lulu has both a self-cleaning system and a self-drying system the latter of which is a feature typically found on pricier models You'll have to press two separate buttons at the same time to start them up we believe you get a lot of bang for your buck with the Ecowell Lulu Quick Clean P05.  When I first wrote this guide, I initially chose the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni as my favorite wet-dry robot vacuum I've consistently been using the Roborock Q Revo in my home Despite being the more affordable of the two with fewer high-tech features I've come to prefer it over the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni The Roborock Q Revo quickly maps your home within an app where you can schedule a full cleaning or specify certain rooms or zones in your house for the Roborock Q Revo to clean Not only can I customize how I want the robot to clean each room but I can choose to have it vacuum and mop at the same time or do one function or the other This also means I can adjust the suction power and water flow I prefer to have the Roborock Q Revo clean in an up-and-down pattern You can even set the robot to clean in a manner that follows the floor seams of your hard floors to prevent potential scraping (to be clear I've never noticed any scraping or scratches when I haven't had this setting ticked) I can also create no-go zones so that the robot won't clean certain areas The Roborock Q Revo is a rockstar when it comes to vacuuming fine materials like flour and larger debris like Cheerios from rugs I found that it's best to use a higher suction power than the standard one (called "Balanced" in the app) to pick up fine materials like flour This is only the case when I'm using the robot as just a vacuum When using the vacuum and mop features at the same time the Roborock completely cleaned up all the flour At least it doesn't leave a lot of water on the floor which I appreciate since I have historic hardwood floors I've seen the robot seemingly improve in various ways since I first began using it The Roborock Q Revo doesn't get stuck on the legs of my armchair as it once did and it can climb all but one of my thresholds in my house with ease (I've not found a robot that can climb that final threshold) If at any point the vacuum disconnects from the WiFi (say if I unplug it from the wall for a long period of time) it connects a lot more easily than it did when I originally tested it If the robot needs to recharge during a cleaning session it'll return to the charging base and then finish the cleaning job when it's powered back up The charging base also doubles as a hands-free self-cleaning base that pulls dirt and debris from the robot and stores it in the base Even though it only uses cold water to clean the mop pads at least it will clean the pads every 10-25 minutes (based on my settings) Multiple cleaning modes: The first thing you want to look for when buying a wet-dry vacuum is what kind of flooring it is designed to clean Most can be used on any kind of hard flooring though some may have settings designed for wood flooring check to see if the wet-dry vacuum is outfitted with different cleaning modes that allows more water and power output for a deeper clean Some wet-dry vacuums have eco modes that save battery you'll want a wet-dry vacuum that has the ability to suction liquid off the floor Power source: While most wet-dry vacuums are battery-powered Ask yourself if an unlimited power source is most important to you or if you don't want the hassle of a cord Be wary of brands that don't provide a battery runtime as it generally indicates it's on the lower end Edge cleaning capabilities: How well a wet-dry vacuum can clean along the edges of the vacuum head is important we noticed that some vacuum heads leave a dry strip of floor half an inch or a full inch between the front of a vacuum head and the wall if you went along the wall with the side of the vacuum and utilized edge cleaning that dry strip of flooring might only be a centimeter in width This is why edge cleaning is such an important element of a wet-dry vacuum you'd be pulling out your mop to get those tight corners Self-cleaning systems: It may seem like all wet-dry vacuums have a self-cleaning system the Deebot X2 Omni has the best system among those listed above because it's entirely hands-free on top of removing the dirt and debris into a sealed bag in the docking station the Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro was the most involved because it requires you to put water in the docking station and then hold the machine at a certain angle while it pulls water through the vacuum head At least Bissell tries to separate pet hair from the dirty water with a pet hair filter in the dirty water tank Look for wet-dry vacuums that separate dirt and debris completely from the dirty water tank Just remember that no matter the wet-dry vacuum even if it has a self-cleaning and self-drying system you'll need to promptly empty the dirty water tank double check to make sure there isn't hair or dust stuck on the brush roll or in the vacuum head (there usually is) and let the brush roll and air filter air dry for a whole day to avoid mildew growth Dirt-detect features: No matter if the wet-dry vacuum has an LED headlight or not it can still be hard to detect dirt or stains on a floor This is why wet-dry vacuums with dirt-detecting sensors are the most ideal but they are a sophisticated feature that costs a premium Such wet-dry vacuums not only increase the suction when the floor is particularly dirty but they'll also inform you — usually by colored lights on a digital or LCD display — that the floor is either clean or dirty and requires a few more passes of the vacuum or more water output to clean a stain about what to look for in wet-dry vacuums and how to best use and take care of them.  Vacuuming and mopping ability: We tested each wet-dry vacuum for how well they picked up debris going forward and backward and along the front and edges of the vacuum head on different hard floor surfaces and rugs (if they could be used on rugs) Each wet-dry vacuum was used to clean various items or liquids like ketchup We paid special attention to how many passes it took to clean something off a floor Battery runtime: Just because a brand says its product has a certain battery runtime doesn't mean that the battery will last that long we monitored the battery runtime when it was used in the regular auto mode we also got a feel for how well the battery did on max or eco modes and kept that in mind when writing this guide Water tank capacity: Wet-dry vacuums have clean and dirty water tanks "Larger [dirty water] tanks hold more liquid and debris reducing the frequency of how many times you may have to empty the tank." Not only did we pay attention to how quickly the dirty water tank filled up but we also took note of how many times we had to refill the clean water tank While it's not too big of a hassle to empty dirty tanks or refill clean ones Dirty water tanks that fill too quickly could also indicate an excessive water output or some other issue with the machine Comfort and ease of use: A cleaning tool should be easy and comfortable to use which is why this was an important feature to consider during testing We compared wet-dry vacuums that had self-propulsion features and those that didn't as well as paid attention to the way the vacuum heads swiveled Some were outfitted with apps or voice assistants that could make the wet-dry vacuums easier to use We made sure that the technology wasn't too complicated for the average user to figure out  Clean-up and maintenance: Perhaps the biggest drawback to wet-dry vacuums is the clean-up and maintenance they require — even those with self-cleaning and self-drying features some wet-dry vacuums have designs that make the process easier or at least less gross We also determined whether the self-cleaning and self-drying features were efficient or not Mock reminds us: "If not regularly cleaned and affect the overall effectiveness of the vac All this can lead to a shorter lifespan of the wet-dry vacuum." "Wet/dry vacs and mops are all better suited to clean hard floors then wet/dry vacs are better since they combine the functionality of both vacuuming and mopping." look for wet-dry vacuums with "higher wattage or horsepower [as it] generally indicates better performances when dealing with wet messes." and a mop can focus on removing stains and grime," she explains.  A wet-dry vacuum will not replace the best carpet cleaners 2025 7:30 PM EDTMen’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links Normally $200, the DeWalt 5-Gallon Stealthsonic Shop Vacuum is just $133 right now That’s big savings on a vacuum that’s earned 43 five-star ratings (out of 53 total) and reviews calling it “quiet” and “easy to maneuver" with “plenty of power.” It comes with a full suite of accessories “I was genuinely surprised at how quiet it is for a shop vac,” wrote one reviewer “There's no need for ear protection or worrying about waking up the whole house.” And lest you think a lack of noise means a lack of suction “the suction power is seriously impressive and handles everything from fine dust to bigger debris without a problem.” Overall Another satisfied customer wrote that the attachments are “useful” and the brushes in particular make it suitable for home (i.e. They allow you to “capture dust and debris in a single stroke and send it into the vacuum,” and “indoors it will stand next to many of your premium brands of household vacuum.” Prices are accurate and items in stock at time of publishing. vacmop is as close to life-changing as a piece of home cleaning equipment can be That's because it sucks up dry debris and mops hard floors at the same time New in this update: In 2025 I have a new budget pick from Tineco as well as a recommendation for a powerful Dyson cordless vacuum that also has a wet mopping component I also tested Dyson's first true vacmop as well as new Shark Hydrovac model Tineco Floor One S7 Pro Smart Cordless Floor Cleaner PowerfulEfficientComparatively quietDual-edge cleaningLeaves floors mostly dryHEPA filter for dry debrisLots of included accessoriesCons Expensive (though often on sale)Annoying voice assistant (can be deactivated)Specs Weight: 21.5 lbsRun time: Up to 40 minutesProprietary solution: Yes (included)Self-cleaning mode: YesWarranty: 2-year limited warranty spare HEPA filter (some accessories may vary by retailer) which has a roller brush that goes to only one edge of the motorhead—the S7’s mop roller extends to both ends The new design offers what's called dual-edge cleaning making it possible to mop along baseboards and under cabinets from any direction without leaving a noticeable strip of dirty floor around the perimeter of the room While the brush roller couldn't quite get flush with my baseboards it got within about a quarter inch—a big difference compared to most other mop vacs that lack any edge cleaning capability at all The Floor One S7 Pro has more advanced smart features than the S5 Combo too When you power it on after charging for the first time you’ll get a guided video tutorial on the LED screen (which also indicates cleaning mode Once the clean water tank has fresh water and solution you can begin the floor cleaning—and you barely have to push the thing since the motor is self-propelled This machine left my hard floors cleaner and drier than any other mop vac I tested and it runs for 40 minutes on a single charge (twice as long as the Floor One S5 Combo) to the efficiency of Tineco’s proprietary iLoop sensor It’s a feature of the brand’s smart models that detects wet and dry messes and adjusts the suction power the S7 cleans the brush roller with one of two cleaning cycles ("quick" or “super”) and charges on a dock that has additional storage for the included cleaning brush and spare microfiber roller This model also comes with a cleaning brush and a small bottle of cleaning solution concentrate (only a capful is needed every time you fill the clean water tank) This high-tech mop vac is close to perfect Some pet hair does accumulate under the roller even after running the self-cleaning cycle but I have a particularly hairy mutt and this is an issue I encountered with every model I tested The voice assistance can be a bit annoying (especially because the default volume is loud and it’s not like you and your pal Alexa can voice control your mop vac to clean your floors in hands-free mode) but it’s helpful for getting to know the machine and can be disabled with a mute button on the main body or in the optional-to-use companion app The only other issue is that cleaning out the debris trap is pretty nasty that’s true of nearly every mop vac I tested and it’s probably not as bad if you don’t have pets Navigating Tineco’s product offerings can be confusing and at times frustrating—especially because the names are so similar and it's easy to confuse an iFloor model with a Floor One model before you start adding qualifiers like Ultra It seems there's a slightly different variation on certain models made for nearly every major retailer and it makes it nearly impossible to recommend one specific product as the very best the differences usually have more to do with accessories or water tank capacities than cleaning features I provide direct links to only the specific models I've tested and recommend AffordableLightweightQuietEfficientComes with cleaning toolsCons Small water tanksShort battery life compared to top pickSpecs Weight: 8.82 lbsRun roller and a small bottle of Tineco's cleaning solution—though the accessories that ship with your model will likely depend on the retailer this cordless vacmop employs the brand’s iLoop technology to sense heavily soiled parts of the floor and adjust the suction power as necessary There's also an LED screen with indicators and alerts for clogs and water tank levels If you don’t care about having the latest floor-cleaning gadgets and you can live without the edge-to-edge roller brush (which means you can only clean perimeter of your floors with one side of the motorhead) you’ll likely be very happy with the budget pick efficient floor cleaner that will still change your life if you’re used to sweeping and mopping your floors the old-fashioned way Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Absolute Wet functions are contained within the Submarine motorhead (which is not compatible with any other Dyson stick vac models sorry!) which makes it somewhat easier to clean than true mopvacs Most people will probably find it mops sufficiently with just water too though the manual does allow for the use of other brands' vacmop solutions if necessary Read my full review of the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine. Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner I've thoroughly researched popular and highly-rated vacmops at various price points and tried 16 models at home I assembled each according to the manual (or quick start guide if included) and fully charged the batteries as instructed Because I have small kids and the aforementioned big my home is a wonderfully messy canvas on which to test I used each mop vac multiple times to clean various floor types: my textured black kitchen floor And even though only a few of the devices were indicated for use on area rugs too (no true vacmop impressed me in the rug-cleaning department) Three mop vac models from L to R: Tineco Floor One S7 Pro Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam Corded Wet Dry Vac Does the mop vac clean everyday kitchen messes on the first pass? Does it leave water on the floor? Does it clean to the edge of the floor? While I wasn’t expecting the powerful suction of a Dyson vacuum I still looked for enough suction power to pick up dirt Mop vac runtime varies from 20 minutes to about 40 and I wanted one that could clean all of the exposed hard flooring on the main level of my (admittedly small) house More efficient mop vacs could clean my floors on a single pass and with those machines Is the mop vac easy to put together and use out of the box Is it easy to fill the clean water tank and add a solution Is it easy to switch between modes and identify errors like a misaligned water tank or clogs Is there a cord that makes quick cleaning not-so-quick (I found cordless models to be much easier to use than corded models since the draw of these machines is the ability to vacuum and mop the whole house in a matter of minutes.) Does the mop vac automatically charge when I put it on the dock or do I need to plug it in Does the handle recline enough to get under furniture and raised appliances (Both of my top picks have motorheads that are about 2.5 inches tall and the handles on both recline to about a 30º angle.) Do the water tanks hold enough water to last an entire cleaning session Does the motorhead fit under cabinets and raised appliances Does it come with a docking station for easy upright storage No mop vac is fun to clean, and unlike robovacs there isn’t a pricey model that has an auto-empty feature… yet But many have a self-cleaning feature that you can engage after cleaning once the mop vac is back on its charging dock You still have to empty the dirty water tank and deal with the debris So I looked at how easy/hard/gross it was to clean the dirty water tanks I also noted which machines came with cleaning tools If the mop vac requires a cleaning solution is a sample included with the purchase of the machine cordless wet-dry vacuum cleaner that converts to a handheld vacuum (the hand vac can’t be used for wet messes) It impressively cleaned my floors in a single pass without leaving any wet spots and it was one of the quietest models I tried The battery life has a shorter run time than many other mop vacs (20-ish minutes compared to about 30–35 minutes for other brands) it was efficient enough to clean the areas of bare floor in my modestly-sized kitchen Tineco iFloor3 Wet Dry Cordless Vacuum Cleaner its' still a good budget option that cleans more efficiently and quietly than many of its competitors (that also lack edge cleaning) And while it’s technically not a smart device it does have a backlit LED display with visual alerts for battery level It will also let you know if the dirty water tank is full or if the clean water tank is empty So for what it needs to do (clean the floors) it’s smart enough it has powerful suction to clean up everyday messes on the first pass I found the 25-minute run time sufficient for cleaning all the hard floors in the common areas of my home and I’ve been repeatedly amazed at how little water and solution this machine requires to clean a very dirty kitchen floor Should you need it to work a little harder there’s a button on the handle to manually put it into max mode it has a HEPA filter and self-cleans with the push of a button when put back on the included charging dock lightweight floor cleaner and it’s really easy to use; I was able to start cleaning without consulting the manual The headlights on the motorhead are a nice touch to help see dirty spots on darker floors (or dust on lighter floors) I appreciated the LED “headlights” and the fact that the brush roll is treated with "antimicrobial substance to preserve roller and resist bacterial odors." I can't say it made a difference in my testing but it could be a benefit with longer-term use While the Shark is mostly comparable to the Tineco iFloor 3 Shark Hydrovac Messmaster Cordless 3-in-1 Cleaner other than the fact that it left my floors drier than the earlier model it’s pretty much comparable performance-wise I appreciate that Shark's mop vacs are lightweight and the little LED lights on the motorhead are helpful features But both Shark models were louder than other brands and they don't have edge cleaning—which is really nice to have in the kitchen the “3-in-1” claim is misleading since the three things it does (vacuum self-clean) are three things all cordless vacmops do in 2025 Bissell Crosswave X7 Cordless Pet Pro Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vac I likely would have fallen in love with it and didn’t alert me when the clean water tank was empty Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam Corded Wet Dry Vac (Corded) and their big selling point is versatility—you can use the Crosswave as just a vacuum cleaner (though not a super powerful one) or a mop vac (though you have to keep your finger on a trigger to make the clean water solution flow) The Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam is the most versatile Crosswave yet because you can push a button on the handle to turn it into a steam mop I find the steam especially beneficial in the kitchen and with the steam feature engaged greasy messes off of my textured kitchen floor as well or better than the Tineco Floor One S7 Pro the steam function will not be good for older wood floors and the brush roller got stuck when I tried to transition from tile to a flat weave rug in my bathroom This is also one of the bulkiest mop vacs I’ve tested and it has a cord so it’s not necessarily something I’d whip out for a quick clean But if you want the option to steam clean and you don’t mind the cord Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro Multi-Surface Bagless Wet Dry Vac (Corded) Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro Multi-Surface Bagless Wet Dry Vac It was lightweight compared to the X7 and I appreciated that the clean water tank had indicators for small areas (up to 350 square feet) or or large areas (up to 700 square feet) But a corded device just can't compare to older similarly-priced (and cordless) Tineco models Eureka All in One Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner (Corded) and it’s very similar to the corded Crosswave Pet Pro It’s a little louder and not as smooth to maneuver than the Crosswave but it does have a more attractive black and white body and comes with a couple of handy tools for cleaning the machine cordless Tineco iFloor 3 is only about $50 more than the Eureka (at the time of publication Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner (Corded) Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner I called it “The Street Sweeper.” Not only is it much larger than all of the other mop vacs I tried it also has flat spinning brushes instead of a soft the size and unique design didn’t quite translate to more cleaning power and the FloorMate Deluxe somehow felt like too much and not enough for my cleaning up everyday messes in my house It struggled to collect small debris from the textured kitchen floor and couldn’t get into corners at all Hizero Bionic Hard Floor Cleaner (Discontinued) INSE Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner (Discontinued) The INSE Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner was similar to my former budget pick but it’s the only mop vac I tested that year had the clean water tank built into the motorhead It was also the only one that came with dissolvable solution strips instead of liquid and if the exceptionally dark water that I dumped out of the dirty water tank multiple times was any indication it did a very good job of cleaning my floors I decided I liked it just as much as the iFloor 3 Roborock Dyad Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum (Discontinued) Unlike vacuum cleaners which collect dry dirt and debris mop vacs (you may also see them called “vacmops” or “wet-dry vacuum cleaners”) suck up dirt and debris while also mopping hard floors with a constant supply of fresh water and cleaning solution The fresh water comes from the machine’s fresh water tank and works with a rotating soft brush roller to mop the floor the mop vac sucks the used water back into a separate dirty water tank where it filters out any solid debris it should also leave your floors fairly dry Mopping the floors of my century-old home used to be a whole thing and going around the perimeter with a microfiber cloth to get everything (dog hair I thought a pricey Wi-Fi-enabled robot mop might be the secret to consistently clean floors but early models didn’t actually suck anything up and I had to manually switch dry and wet mop pads mid-cycle The disposable cleaning pads felt wasteful too and I didn’t like washing the reusable microfiber mop pads with my regular laundry so even the best robot mop I could buy at the time ended up being more of a hassle than it was worth But then I discovered the mop vac: a magi cal device that can suck up dirt and dog hair and mop the floor with clean water After zipping around the main floor of my house for 20 minutes my floors were cleaner than they’d ever been—and they stayed that way And until there’s a robot vacuum mop that works as well as the upright mop vacs I’m quite happy to push mine around the house for a few minutes a few times a week Some had issues with obstacle avoidance and clearing uneven thresholds while others clogged when they encountered too much dog hair If you’re anything like me—a person for whom mopping was once a rare and onerous occurrence—a good mop vac can transform you into a regular and enthusiastic mopper This is especially true for parents and pet owners In addition to weekly cleaning sessions, I bust out my mop vac when my kids make a mess under the dinner table, when my dog tracks mud into the house, and when I get a little overzealous in the kitchen (the best vacuum mops can tackle grease and grime). My mop vac is also great for doing a quick panic clean when I’m expecting guests. While some mop vacs can technically be used on area rugs, none of the models I tested impressed me with their rug-cleaning abilities. Most mop vacs are meant for cleaning hard surfaces and they’re safe and effective on sealed hardwood, vinyl, laminate, and tile floors. Because a mop vac effectively and efficiently mops a floor while also sucking up dirt and debris, it cuts cleaning time in half. At least. So if you have a substantial amount of flooring not covered by carpet, and you would like to spend less time cleaning those floors, a cordless vacmop is for you. You need zero plumbing skills maybe and one set of pliers to connect this handy little hose to the pipe that feeds (very clean) water into your toilet tank and you can use it to rinse all of your mop vac parts. To freshen your mop vac and bring a little aromatherapy to your housekeeping routine, you can add a few drops of essential oil to the brush roller once it’s wet. This way you don’t have to worry about putting oils in the clean water tank or damaging the clean water jets (if the mop vac can clean up food oil splatters from the floor, a few drops of oil on the roller shouldn't’t be a problem). I like to use lavender oil since it’s generally considered safe for pets. 26 Staff-Favorite Cleaning Tools and Products for a Cleaner Kitchen in 2023 Colorful dish scrubbies and tiny trash receptacles are just some of our favorites.Emily Farris All Best Kitchen Equipment We Tested in 2022After a whole year's worth of testing this was the gear that came out on top.The Editors of Epicurious The Best Vacuum Cleaner for Your Kitchen and BeyondWe tested 16 popular models from Miele and other top brands to see which could pick up our worst messes.Emily Farris This Mop/Vacuum Cleaner Hybrid Tackles the Dirtiest Kitchen FloorsNo more grease by the stove This cleaning tool really does it all.Jarrett Melendez 24 Actually Useful Gifts for Exhausted ParentsAs told by a very tired parent.Emily Farris And you can even make a phone call through the new washer and dryer The Bespoke Jet AI now comes with an LCD display that connects to your phone to show incoming calls and texts by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy FacebookThreadsIf you buy something from a Verge link, Vox Media may earn a commission. While the VAC did receive an increase to their travel budget for the coming year the county did not meet their desired number Sangamon County Administrator Brian McFadden says "They asked for over a 1000% increase in their travel budget would be a larger travel budget than the sheriff’s office has McFadden tells us that the county approved the creation of another staff position as part of their new budget but Dawson does not think their office space has enough room for another employee The current facility only has one private office at this time This has caused privacy convers for veterans seeking help from the agency The VAC will make a presentation to the Sangamon County Board at next month's meeting to give the county a better idea of their asks The two will partner on current in-country manufacturing, branding, sales, and support of vacuum trucks, jetter systems, suction trucks, and customized solutions, according to a Vermeer press release.  VTI was founded in 2017 and serves the markets of civil construction, oil and gas, electrical, infrastructure, mining and drilling. Since inception, the organization has grown to approximately 45 employees focused on sales, design, fabrication and assembly, along with aftermarket support for the broader vacuum excavation industry. “This is an exciting opportunity to work with a team focused on the solutions needed in the Australian and New Zealand markets with products that meet the most trusted and recognized accreditation in the region,” said Doug Hundt, president of industrial solutions at Vermeer, in a statement. “Vac Truck Industries is known for their products, high levels of quality, customer support and team, and we are excited to partner with them.” Matt Clough, co-founder and CEO of VTI, said in a statement: “What we love most about this partnership is that Vac Truck Industries and Vermeer share key core values. We are excited to continue working in the business to serve and support our valued customers while also being able to focus on long-term planning and growth.” Keeping her multi-pet home clean is one of her more acceptable obsessions a cordless stick vacuum could be your dream cleaning partner a cordless stick vacuum requires some compromises This nimble, high-tech model is light, powerful, and easy to maneuver. But it doesn’t stand up on its own, and the dustbin is tiny. This model performs about as well as the Dyson V12, and it comes with a station that automatically empties the dustbin when the vacuum is docked. It struggles with fur, though. This model is not as nimble as our top picks, but it’s an excellent cleaner, it has a large dustbin, and it comes with several useful tools. This sturdy, versatile vacuum has excellent suction power, and it comes with several ingenious attachments. It stands on its own and recharges quickly, but it’s heavier and less agile than our other picks. Hands-on testingWe’ve tested hundreds of vacuums over more than a decade, most recently evaluating 34 cordless stick models priced from $100 to $1,000. Cleaning abilityWe measured how much baking soda, cereal, birdseed, glitter, and hair each vac pulled from four types of rugs and bare floors. Warranty and repairsWe looked for cordless stick vacuums with at least a two-year warranty, as well as a replaceable battery—a major plus. ConvenienceFor each vacuum, we noted how easy and comfortable it was to maneuver, and we looked at whether the attachments fit their purpose. It’s light and nimble around furniture and on stairs In suction, airflow, and cleaning power, the V12 Detect Slim rivals more-expensive vacuums (such as the Dyson V15) And the V12 comes with multiple brushes and attachments It runs for 45 minutes on a single charge—longer than most of the other vacuums we’ve tested This stick vacuum has high-tech features that make it almost fun to use; they include a sensor that automatically adjusts suction a laser headlight that illuminates dust in dim corners and an LCD screen with a battery countdown and other information This stick vac is also one of the quietest models we’ve tested You also have to swap between two different brushes depending on whether you use the vacuum on carpet or the bare floor It takes the V12 four hours to recharge—longer than it takes most other models—and it doesn’t stand up on its own Dyson covers the V12 with a two-year warranty This model performs about as well as the Dyson V12 and it comes with a station that automatically empties the dustbin when the vacuum is docked this model excelled at picking up Cheerios Its dual-brush cleaner head effectively handles debris on hard floors and carpets including an auto-detect feature that adjusts power for carpets and a versatile wand with an adjustable angle makes it easier to clean under furniture The Shark PowerDetect struggles with pet fur and it’s notably louder than our other picks but the self-emptying dock (available as an add-on) can alleviate that by automatically sucking debris into a larger canister The Shark PowerDetect comes with a five-year warranty—the longest one among our picks This model is not as nimble as our top picks (It even outperformed a pricier Tineco model we tried.) This vacuum includes a single cleaner head so it eliminates the hassle of having to switch heads when you’re transitioning from bare floors to rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting the Tineco Pro Pet seizes on certain lightweight rugs the GO Pet is designed with bulky fur in mind It quickly transforms into a handheld vacuum for dusting and getting crumbs off of above-floor surfaces The GO Pet has a decent runtime of 38 minutes maneuvering smoothly around chairs and tables and its dustbin can be annoying to reassemble and the battery is replaceable (but finding one is a hassle.) versatile vacuum has excellent suction power and it comes with several ingenious attachments It stands on its own and recharges quickly but it’s heavier and less agile than our other picks so it’s a great choice both for homes and for garages this model readily picked up debris particles of different sizes and weights on all types of floors—it even rivaled the Dyson V12 in our sand-pickup tests 33-ounce dustbin won’t quickly fill up with debris or fur so this vac is ideal for people with pets and workshops Its motorized cleaner head works on bare floors and on carpet (you don’t have to swap brushes And it comes with a variety of useful attachments including an excellent motorized brush tool and a surprisingly useful micro crevice tool But this model is heavy and less agile than our other picks The vacuum stands upright on its own and runs for up to 32 minutes. The battery charges in two hours (one of the fastest charge times we saw in our tests). And the battery is widely available and compatible with various Ryobi machines, so it’s a good choice if you already own One+ Ryobi tools shape-shifting creatures that can change configurations with the help of useful attachments Most cordless vacs are lithe and comfortable to handle And because cordless vacuums are compact and often packaged with either a wall-mountable charging dock or a floor stand they are often stored within arm’s reach and in plain sight But even the priciest cordless stick vacuums can’t match the suction and deep-cleaning power of a good upright or canister vacuum especially if you have wall-to-wall carpeting Their batteries typically last 30 to 40 minutes on a full charge; this is enough time to clean a room or two but it’s unlikely long enough to tackle your home from top to bottom Cordless stick vacuums also have a shorter life expectancy than good plug-in vacuums a cordless stick vac should be a sidekick to a plug-in vacuum the penny would still be there because there’s no air moving down the tube to take it to where it needs to go But you can still feel the pressure of it pulling your hand to the nozzle.” We paid special attention to each vacuum’s cleaner head and we ruled out models that didn’t come with a motorized brush roll because suction and airflow alone can’t remove dirt which is what the brushes do,” Brown explained “They vibrate and sweep the carpet and dislodge the dirt The airflow takes it away.” We also preferred models with an easy-to-remove brush roll so we could detangle and clean it without using special tools We then tried each vacuum on different types of rugs and on bare floors strewn with Cheerios We looked for models that didn’t snowplow (when a vacuum’s low-riding cleaner head pushes around heavier debris instead of sucking it up) dump (when debris falls back out of a vacuum that’s turned off) or jam (when the motorized brush seizes on certain types of rugs and rug pads) We also checked each model’s anti-tangling technology by vacuuming up colorful hair extensions We then ran the top performers in a multi-person to see how they handled a variety of surfaces and messes (cat and bunny litter included) Several company spokespeople told us that a cordless stick vacuum’s advertised run time is typically measured on its low power setting in handheld mode That number rarely holds up in real life: Running a cordless stick vac’s motorized brush on bare floors and rugs draws more power and depletes the battery faster We considered anything over 30 minutes to be an acceptable real-life run time We looked for batteries that charged within four hours or less And we considered it a plus if a vacuum’s run time exceeded 30 minutes and its battery could work in a variety of tools from the same company In addition to occasionally suffering from battery failure cordless stick vacs are prone to the same clogs and other mechanical failures as plug-in machines We called customer service for each of our top performers so we could experience the process and determine how easy it was to order new parts We favored models with a warranty of more than two years agreed that a long warranty is meaningful when you’re making a buying decision: “[It] gives you confidence that a company is standing behind their product.” Weighing just over 5 pounds (4 pounds in hand) the V12 Detect Slim maneuvers easily in awkward spaces and on stairs yet we found that this model was the most comfortable for our hands and wrists who has used this model for several months did note that the V12 Detect Slim gave them a blister after a prolonged cleaning session however.) Its cleaner head swivels 180 degrees and between furniture better than other models we’ve tested whereas previous Dyson models had an uncomfortable trigger-style switch that you had to squeeze to get the vacuum to operate The V12 Detect Slim offers powerful suction and airflow and it excels at picking up dust and debris on both bare floors and rugs it devoured almost 100% of the baking soda we’d spread out on medium-pile rugs—a clear sign that the V12 is capable of targeting deeper-dwelling dust and dander (One competitor picked up just a little over 40% of it.) It also effectively extracted fur from rugs The V12 Detect Slim has three suction modes: eco (lower suction The auto mode is particularly helpful because the dust sensor detects dirt and triggers increased suction power when necessary the V12 Detect Slim regularly went into boost mode near a cat’s litter box it pulled a significant amount of red carpet fibers out of a vintage Persian rug.) we found that the Laser Slim Fluffy head picked up larger debris which the Motorbar head tended to snowplow The Laser Slim Fluffy head swallowed everything we presented it with aside from a large mound of Cheerios (which it choked on) and a huge cockroach (which got stuck in the brush housing) It converts into a handheld vacuum with useful attachments The V12 Detect Slim easily converts into a handheld vacuum and it comes with helpful attachments for tasks around the home and in the car Its mini motorized brush tool was one of the best we tested for removing pet hair from couches Its combination tool allowed us to quickly switch between a wide nozzle and a brush; we found the brush particularly handy for dusting bookshelves and windowsills We don’t know how accurate or useful the particle counter is Like those of many other powerful stick vacuums the V12’s brush roll tends to seize on lightweight rugs Dyson is a reliable company with a well-earned and particularly devoted following If the Dyson V12 Detect Slim isn’t for you the Dyson line includes other options (though they come with triggers) and it’s a great cleaner that is equipped with a couple of meaningful upgrades and a (relatively) large dustbin (it’s twice the size of the V12’s dustbin) But the Gen5detect is heavier than the V12 and it’s less convenient to maneuver and store Even though the V15 Detect’s motor has more muscle this model did not clean significantly better than the V12 Detect Slim Its bin capacity is somewhere between that of the other two models which automatically sucks debris into a larger canister after a cleaning session; this eliminates the hassle of having to frequently open and empty the dustbin (and it cuts down on your exposure to the resulting dust plumes) It’s an excellent cleaner, with well-designed brushes. In our tests, the Shark PowerDetect cleaned just as well as the Dyson V12 and the Tineco GO Pet Its single cleaner head houses a velvety front brush (which grabs dust on hardwood floors The brushes are designed to pick up debris in both forward and reverse motion, making cleanup particularly fast and efficient. (Be aware, though, that the powerful brush roller should not be used on delicate vintage or antique rugs because it’s prone to pulling out fibers along with dust and debris.) the Shark ran for about 58 minutes in eco mode on a single charge—the longest of our picks (Shark claims the vacuum runs for up to 70 minutes It’s relatively lightweight. The Shark PowerDetect is not quite as lightweight as the Dyson V12, but it weighs significantly less than the Ryobi 18V One+ HP Advanced Stick Vacuum Kit which amps up power when the machine detects carpet and debris The LED screen also monitors charging levels The wand has a convenient trigger on the handle for switching modes along with an adjustable angle for tackling hard-to-reach spots Simply press the latch on the back to fold the wand into a right angle This feature proved especially useful when we vacuumed beneath the vanity in a narrow bathroom but it has been out of stock often in the past.) The Shark’s five-year warranty is the longest of our picks This model has the option of including a large the dock’s debris container has to be emptied only once every other week to once a month (depending on the size of your home) you’ll likely have to empty the small dustbin (24 ounces) on the stick vac mid-cleaning it’s a capable cleaner with a generous dustbin and useful tools If you have only about $200 to spend on a cordless stick vacuum It’s a great cleaner. The Tineco GO Pet handled all types of debris, including sand, as efficiently as the Dyson V12 The GO Pet comes with just one cleaner head, with both soft and hard bristles, and it’s suitable for all kinds of floors. In our tests, its brush roll grabbed dust, Cheerios, and birdseed in one or two passes without snowplowing or dumping You don’t need tools to remove the brush roll for maintenance since it can easily be pulled out by twisting the corresponding wheel on the side But this vacuum struggles on lightweight rugs While the machine did well on bare floors and carpets we noticed that the GO Pet’s brush roll seized on certain lighter rugs The Tineco GO Pet comes with three useful attachments: a crevice tool; a 2-in-1 dusting brush for crumbs on couches and countertops; and a mini power brush for fur pickup on grippy surfaces (a rare tool for stick vacs in this price range) We tried the power brush on a velvet couch in a four-pet household and it removed fur without much effort; a Wirecutter staffer who has used the Tineco GO for several months and it’s nearly triple the size of the Dyson V12’s The GO Pet’s dustbin can be emptied with a lever without having to detach it from the main body But we recommend taking it off to empty it (Make sure to do a little wiggle test once you put it back on It’s midweight and convenient to use, but it’s also a bit noisy. Weighing 6.8 pounds (4 pounds in hand), the Tineco GO Pet is lighter and easier to maneuver on stairs than our Ryobi pick. It navigates well around furniture, though it’s not nearly as nimble as the Dyson V12 this model is significantly louder than our other picks This model has a two-year warranty (now mostly standard for cordless vacuum cleaners) Although Tineco claims the GO Pet runs up to 60 minutes we got barely 40 minutes out of it on low mode (with the cleaner head attached) The GO Pet’s battery is technically replaceable a representative requested our mailing address just to check the company’s inventory they promised to send a specific ordering link—a process far more cumbersome than simply ordering a Ryobi or Dyson replacement battery online It’s a great cleaner. In suction and airflow, this Ryobi stick vacuum performs almost as well as its most powerful competitors. We tried it on rugs, bare floors, car seats, and upholstery, and it did an excellent job of picking up all kinds of debris. In our sand-on-carpet cleaning test, this model didn’t extract as much as the Dyson V12 Detect Slim but it still performed better than most of its competitors in the price range The Ryobi 18V One+ HP vac has three cleaning modes We found that the medium mode worked fine for most surfaces and dirt But the boost mode comes in handy when you’re confronted with stubborn Its all-in-one cleaner head is effective on a variety of surfaces this Ryobi model comes with one cleaner head with a plush roll in the front (for bare floors) and a brush roll with stiff bristles and rubber fins in the back (The latter roll excels at removing fur and other grippy debris from carpets and rugs.) The single cleaner head has a white headlight that doesn’t detect dust quite as efficiently as the headlight on the V12 the Ryobi was equally effective at picking up Cheerios on slippery tiles and pet fur on a medium-pile rug Despite the cleaner head’s depth—about double that of the V12 Detect Slim’s Motorbar—it swivels smoothly around corners and furniture The Ryobi 18V One+ HP vacuum’s dustbin holds 33 ounces—nearly three times the capacity of the V12 Detect Slim’s bin and reports that she can go through a week of light vacuuming without needing to empty it This model runs for about 32 minutes in eco (low) mode which is enough time to vacuum a small or medium-size apartment and for a quick workshop cleanup Its battery recharges in under two hours—faster than the battery on any other vacuum we tested in our latest round And the Ryobi battery has a helpful charge-level indicator light this vacuum measured around 71 dB when run on eco mode so it’s a smidge quieter than even the Dyson V12 The Ryobi 18V One+ HP vacuum isn’t quite as clumsy as it looks so this vac is the heaviest among our picks The weighty battery sits behind the handle with the motor directly below—this design can make it uncomfortable to use and we found ourselves switching hands frequently while vacuuming you don’t have to scramble to find a place to prop it up The Ryobi easily transforms into a handheld vacuum and its attachments are versatile and better designed than those of other models we’ve tested the crevice tool and pivoting brush worked great in a car’s tight storage compartments And the motorized mini brush was one of the few tested tools that made a dent in the thick layer of fur on a car’s clingy trunk upholstery This Ryobi vacuum also includes a micro crevice tool flexible straws; we found this tool ideal for cleaning the interior of a dusty sewing machine and a dryer vent Ryobi has a history of availability issues. Ryobi products are sold exclusively through Home Depot and Ryobi’s website The previous Ryobi cordless stick model we recommended went out of stock at times We haven’t seen stock issues with our current pick Ordering replacement parts is confusing. Ryobi’s replacement-parts ordering portal isn’t directly linked on Ryobi’s homepage It took multiple calls and an email to the marketing department to find the part we were looking for which the company claims has a near hour-long runtime and a roller brush that automatically adjusts to different floor types but we found it expensive ($600 at the time of writing) for what it had to offer the Dreame Z10 frequently dumped cereals out of the cleaner head when it was put back on station The dust bag in its self-emptying station is tiny And the cleaner head felt scratchy on hardwood floors we found the Pure One Station 5 disappointing for the price and it dumped them back out when we turned it off (a problem that most other stick-vac manufacturers have solved at this point) It’s virtually impossible to take its self-emptying dock apart But its middling cleaning performance makes it an okay small-mess vacuum at best vacuum-only cousin—this model has a trigger instead of a button Its mopping performance pales in comparison to that of an old-fashioned mop and its five separate parts need to be painstakingly disassembled to be cleaned which allowed heavier debris to drop back out when we shut it off Tineco’s product team told us they were working to improve the issue and it was also a worse cleaner than our picks but they were incapable of sucking up and holding in debris effectively and in our testing it failed to extract all of the debris from the vacuum’s teeny dustbin Emptying the dustbin manually was awkward and easily led to spills It can work in three configurations: as a handheld vacuum cleaner with the bin and motor (the heaviest part) below the handle or with the bin and motor directly above the cleaner head (We found the last configuration to be the best.) But it’s expensive its cleaner head jammed easily on certain rug and rug-pad combinations and we found opening the dustbin to be a hassle its 25-minute real-life run time and two-year warranty are disappointing But here are six ways to keep your stick vacuum clean and maintained: (Check the manufacturer’s guide for specific instructions on cleaning the filter.) “Remember that the motor is trying to draw air to breathe through the filter,” Gasko said An overstuffed bin inhibits airflow and suction and clean the whole bowl (consult the manual first) Anything oversize or slightly sticky runs the risk of gumming up the works If any part of the vacuum cleaner is clogged up Tangled-up brushes affect cleaning performance “A brush clogged with hair means the motor is going to draw a lot more juice out of the battery and really reduce the amount of time that you can get out of the vacuum,” Gasko explained Don’t run your vacuum on high for more than a minute or two. Keep it on low or an “eco” setting as much as possible, and save the high-power or “boost” mode for spot cleaning. Running your vacuum on the high setting for long periods can damage the battery, said James Brown, service specialist and museum curator at Mr. Vacuum Cleaner Keeping the battery in the charging dock can shorten its lifespan Make sure that the charging contacts are clean and that the power adapter is in working order This guide was edited by Ingrid Skjong and Courtney Schley engineer at Ember and former engineer at Dyson and Shark vacuum-cleaner collector and repair specialist and owner of Mid Missouri Vacuum James Brown, service specialist and museum curator at Mr. Vacuum Cleaner I was a senior staff writer on Wirecutter’s home appliance team where I covered all kinds of vacuum cleaners I also ventured into the wild world of bunny care two-rabbit home clean is one of my more acceptable obsessions We think the Miele Classic C1 Pure Suction does an excellent job These are 100(ish) of our favorite Wirecutter picks to help you tackle a deep clean of your home The current robot vacuum-mop combos are too fickle Wirecutter is the product recommendation service from The New York Times Our journalists combine independent research with (occasionally) over-the-top testing so you can make quick and confident buying decisions Whether it’s finding great products or discovering helpful advice we’ll help you get it right (the first time) View source version on businesswire.com: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250224691239/en/ Source: Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation Already have an account? Login I must admit to not cleaning my windows as often as I should It’s one of the jobs that gets shifted to the bottom of my chores list and then some it will be no surprise that the state of my windows didn’t lead me to try out a new window vac It seemed just what I needed to keep my surfaces sparkling This Karcher window vacuum is cordless and has an extra long battery life The US version comes with a 11-inch suction attachments and a cleaning spray bottle with dryer and microfiber cover but one issue I found was when I held the appliance at a vertical angle to reach awkward areas That would cause the water collection tank to leak Regardless of how many add-on attachments or features this Karcher window vac had I like the flexibility of having the two nozzles even if it makes the price more expensive than buying the single nozzle version Two nozzles allow you to clean awkward areas increasing the type of surfaces you can clean such as small mirrors The vacuum's dirty water tank can hold up to 5 fluid oz of liquid which is marked on the container by 'Max' — there's no fear of surpassing the level if you keep an eye on it when holding the appliance at a vertical angle — and I gave it a good go — not one single drop leaked (Image credit: Tom's Guide / Camilla Sharman)(Image credit: Tom's Guide / Camilla Sharman)But there’s more The appliance also comes with a spray bottle that attaches to another blade that houses a microfiber cleaning cloth you can spray your cleaning solution onto your surface and then remove the excess liquid with the vacuum The cloth can then be removed and put in the wash (Image credit: Tom's Guide / Camilla Sharman)(Image credit: Tom's Guide / Camilla Sharman)Karcher’s cordless window vac comes with a sheet of illustrated instructions despite not having written words to take you through how to use the appliance it’s fairly straightforward to see what fits where Both of the nozzles fit into place in the same manner and need a lightweight push to clip them in place and they can be pulled out by gripping the raised groove area on the underside of the nozzle Inserting and removing the water tank is also straightforward I first aligned the top section and then pushed the bottom of the water tank into place When I first unpacked the window vacuum it was charged to 5% I love this feature — seeing how much power you have during chores You can anticipate in good time if your appliance will get you through to the end of your task as there's nothing more frustrating than the power dying when you're halfway through a job and you've got to wait for your appliance to recharge the Karcher vac is pleasantly lightweight to hold and won’t require an armful of ripped muscles to use it The window vac is switched with a button that doubles as the power display and the button is easy to press with your thumb while still holding the handle It would be equally easy to hold whether you are right or left-handed It took me a little while to get used to how much pressure to use when applying the silicone suction lips to my surfaces They are much softer than the previous window vac I had used you should get a good feel of how to use it Although I was pleased that the Karcher window vac worked a treat to remove water I still used a microfiber cloth to reach into the corners of my windows and shower screen I was left with far less mess and wet clothes than if I’d cleaned my surfaces by hand I did have a go; the Karcher window vac can be used to clean a plethora of other household surfaces CondensationOne of my particular issues was clearing up condensation, which is a particular problem I face when it’s cold outside and warm inside. I don't own one of the best dehumidifiers so I have to rely on other methods to keep moisture at bay I found the smaller nozzle attachment was best for this job but this will depend on the size of your windows as it’s surprising how quickly it can fill up to the ‘Max’ mark as there’s plenty of room inside the tank for more (Image credit: Tom's Guide / Camilla Sharman)(Image credit: Tom's Guide / Camilla Sharman)Shower screensMy shower screen was the next on my list and it has the advantage of requiring human power without needing a charge But if you’ve got a large shower enclosure (I wish!) or you want to capture the water more neatly a window vac will probably be your preferred choice removing the water from your shower screen after every shower will help reduce the build-up of limescale and the added issue of removing it MirrorsMirrors can also be tricky to clean and although you won't have the issue of limescale to battle using a window vac can help surfaces come up shiny do be mindful of using a window vac on a mirror attached to a wall rather than screwed in with secure fixings I have a decorative vintage mirror that is attached via a hook so I needed to carefully hold into the mirror while using the window vac the window vac is ideal if you have mirrored wardrobes as it will help you bring them back to full shine much faster than cleaning them by hand Kitchen cleaningThe window vacuum can also be used in the kitchen on glass surfaces if you spill liquid on your countertop or floor you can quickly grab your Karcher vac and clean up the mess so you'll never be left crying over spilt milk again Camilla SharmanSocial Links NavigationStaff Writer HomesCamilla Sharman has worked in publishing and marketing for over 30 years and has covered a wide range of sectors within the business and consumer industries both as a feature Camilla has researched articles for many different sectors from the jewellery industry to finance and tech she enjoys delving deep and learning the ins and out of different topics then conveying her research within engaging content that informs the reader when she’s not in her kitchen experimenting with a new recipe you’ll find her keeping fit at the gym She also loves the great outdoors and if she’s not pottering about in her garden she’ll be jumping on her bike for a gentle cycle ride you will then be prompted to enter your display name Our top picks do double-duty to keep your floors clean Olivia is a writer and content creator that has written about a wide range of subjects There are a lot of bonuses to a wet-dry vacuum, like fewer appliances to store and fewer steps in your process. If you like the idea of robot vacuums consider getting one with wet-dry capabilities they all generally did a good job of cleaning up messes but we didn’t find any to be as effective as using a mop or vacuum on its own if you want to minimize cleaning supplies and have hardwood or tile floors in your home vacuum-mop combos are a functional option that will get the job done View source version on businesswire.com: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250220043679/en/ News & Insights Just days after the First Global Ministerial Conference on Violence Against Children it’s essential to take a moment to reflect on the significant discussions and outcomes The first-ever Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children took place on November 7-8 and was hosted by the Governments of Colombia and Sweden and the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on ending violence against children.  The conference brought together over 117 government ministers from around the world providing a unique opportunity to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in relation to eradicating all forms of violence against children and ensuring that commitments go beyond words and become deeds It served as a critical platform for global leaders and stakeholders to unite under a shared goal: eliminating violence against children Discussions centered on advancing policies and showing that ending violence against children is possible this conference presented an important chance to speak with governments and other key stakeholders directly and to connect and strategize with partners and allies Equality Now and our partners organized key satellite events prior to the conference:  and global civil society organizations with members of Congress to advocate for the approval of Bill No establishes 18 as the minimum age for marriage effectively eliminating child marriage and early unions in Colombia The event provided a vital final push for its approval with the Senate President committing to prioritize the vote on the plenary agenda—a promise that has now been fulfilled passing the law is just the beginning—effective implementation will require training for those enforcing it and collaboration with civil society to ensure widespread understanding and support incorporating awareness programs aimed at prevention but sustained efforts will be needed to eradicate child marriage in Colombia was a participatory dialogue with civil society organizations to engage them on the issue of child early and forced marriage and unions as forms of violence against children The dialogue highlighted that in Latin America and the Caribbean cultural norms and traditions continue to normalize early unions Participants also pointed out that conflicts and regression in rights protections contribute to the persistence of child marriage To conclude our advocacy efforts regarding ending child marriage and early unions, we issued a joint statement to prioritize and enact laws that protect children’s rights explicitly prohibiting child marriage and early unions We underscored the need for urgent and sustainable measures that not only protect girls from these risks but also address the structural causes perpetuating the issue We urged governments to implement preventive and support programs that ensure the well-being and full development of girls  and adolescents Equality Now co-hosted a satellite event on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in collaboration with Orchid Project, The Girl Generation, Plan International and the team of Colombian Congresswoman Carolina Giraldo an Indigenous Embera leader from Colombia; Congresswoman Carolina Giraldo Botero; Hon Minister for Gender from Sierra Leone; Indrani Sarkar Child Protection Specialist at UNICEF East and Southern Africa regional office; and Maria Paula Suarez Global Policy and Advocacy Advisor for Protection from Violence at Plan International Moderated by Equality Now’s Global Lead on Ending Harmful Practices Divya Srinivasan the session concluded with remarks by Viviana Vargas Coordinator of the Gender and Diversity Group from Colombia’s Ministry of the Interior Equality Now co-hosted a satellite event on sexual violence against children with Movimiento Valientes (the LAC branch of Brave Movement), International Justice Mission (IJM), and A Breeze of Hope The event centered the voices of survivors and created a platform for dialogue among survivors Survivors presented and discussed the pledges they had developed over the past months—a process supported by Equality Now and IJM through their expertise These pledges have been submitted for inclusion in the Global Call to Action to End Violence Against Children in the coming decade The governments of Colombia and Ecuador participated expressing their commitment to support these efforts The discussion highlighted the urgent need for public and formal commitments from governments to tackle what was described as “an epidemic of sexual violence against children” through comprehensive actions and emphasized the importance of survivor-centered justice approaches Equality Now also participated in our allies’ satellite events including the event organized by Networks of Survivors of Latin America and the Caribbean The event brought together voices from across the region to strengthen efforts in eradicating sexual violence against girls and adolescents all underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive survivor-centered approaches to justice and systemic change We also took part in another satellite event with the participation of children and adolescents from various organizations including the Children and Youth Network Against Sexual Violence Their leadership and commitment showcase the power of a generation demanding public policies to eradicate sexual violence IJM and Equality Now were invited to the Commission on Childhood and Adolescence of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia to present their pledges The session involved key stakeholders such as the Prosecutor’s Office all working to influence the development of legislative proposals with a focus on international law as attendees from different regions and sectors connected over coffee and informal gatherings These interactions sparked ideas for future collaborations and reinforced existing partnerships The path forward demands not only sustained advocacy but also the monitoring of progress to ensure that promises made at the conference result in real change for girls and adolescents worldwide A pocos días de haber concluido la Primera Conferencia Ministerial Global para Poner Fin a la Violencia contra la Niñez es fundamental tomarse un momento para reflexionar sobre las importantes discusiones y resultados lo que aprendimos y los próximos pasos a seguir La primera Conferencia Ministerial sobre la Erradicación de la Violencia contra la Niñez se celebró los días 7 y 8 de noviembre de 2024 en Bogotá Fue organizada por los Gobiernos de Colombia y Suecia UNICEF y la Representante Especial del Secretario General de la ONU sobre la erradicación de la violencia contra la niñez La conferencia reunió a más de 117 ministros de gobierno de todo el mundo brindando una oportunidad única para acelerar la implementación de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible en relación con la erradicación de todas las formas de violencia contra la niñez y garantizar que los compromisos vayan más allá de las palabras y se conviertan en acciones concretas Este evento fue una plataforma fundamental para líderes globales todos unidos bajo un objetivo común: eliminar la violencia contra la niñez Las discusiones se centraron en el avance de políticas la movilización de recursos y en demostrar que es posible erradicar la violencia contra la niñez esta conferencia fue una oportunidad crucial para dialogar directamente con gobiernos y otros actores clave y para conectar y planificar estrategias aliadas con las cuales se organizaron eventos satélites previos a la conferencia: Iniciamos con una mesa redonda durante un desayuno con senadoras y senadores de Colombia y sus equipos, organizada en colaboración con Girls Not Brides, Global Fund for Children, GENFAMI, Profamilia y miembros del Congreso Este evento reunió a organizaciones de la sociedad civil a nivel nacional regional y global junto con miembros del Congreso para abogar por la aprobación del Proyecto de Ley N.º 297 establece los 18 años como edad mínima para contraer matrimonio eliminando efectivamente el matrimonio infantil y las uniones tempranas en Colombia El evento brindó el impulso final necesario para su aprobación con el Presidente del Senado comprometiéndose a priorizar la votación en la agenda del pleno aprobar la ley es solo el comienzo; su implementación efectiva requerirá capacitación para quienes la hagan cumplir y colaboración con la sociedad civil para garantizar una comprensión y apoyo generalizados incorporando programas de concienciación para la prevención aunque se necesitarán esfuerzos sostenidos para erradicar el matrimonio infantil en Colombia coorganizado con las mismas organizaciones aliadas fue un diálogo participativo con organizaciones de la sociedad civil para abordar el matrimonio infantil y las uniones tempranas como formas de violencia contra la niñez El diálogo destacó que en América Latina y el Caribe las uniones informales son prevalentes y están a menudo vinculadas a la pobreza las normas y tradiciones culturales continúan normalizando las uniones tempranas arraigadas en profundas desigualdades de género Las participantes también señalaron que los conflictos los movimientos antiderechos y los retrocesos en la protección de los derechos contribuyen a la persistencia del matrimonio infantil Para concluir nuestros esfuerzos de incidencia, emitimos una declaración conjunta a priorizar y promulgar leyes que protejan los derechos de la niñez prohibiendo explícitamente el matrimonio infantil y las uniones tempranas Destacamos la necesidad de medidas urgentes y sostenibles que no solo protejan a las niñas de estos riesgos sino que también aborden las causas estructurales que perpetúan el problema Equality Now copatrocinó un evento satélite sobre la mutilación genital femenina (MGF) en colaboración con Orchid Project, The Girl Generation, Plan International y el equipo de la congresista colombiana Carolina Giraldo En el panel participaron destacadas personalidades líder indígena embera de Colombia; la congresista Carolina Giraldo Botero; Isata Mahoi ministra de Género de Sierra Leona; Indrani Sarkar especialista en protección de la infancia de la oficina regional de UNICEF para África oriental y meridional; y María Paula Suárez asesora de política mundial y promoción para la protección frente a la violencia de Plan International líder global de Equality Now para poner fin a las prácticas nocivas concluyó con las observaciones de Viviana Vargas coordinadora del Grupo de Género y Diversidad del Ministerio del Interior de Colombia así como el proyecto de ley sobre MGF pendiente de aprobación en el Congreso colombiano El 12 de noviembre, Movimiento Valientes, IJM y Equality Now fueron invitados a la Comisión de Infancia y Adolescencia del Congreso de la República de Colombia para presentar sus demandas. Breathe in the organic, nostalgic scent of age and step back to an era when Ely promoted itself as the “Playground of a Nation” and implored visitors to “fish, swim and kodak.” In 1917, a couple known as Aunt Kate and Uncle Van — Tubbs’ mother’s aunt and her father’s second cousin, respectively — moved to the property. Van Vacton Harriswas a suspender-wearing timber cruiser who scouted North Country forests for a mining company. His wife was a Duluth schoolteacher. When the Harrises retired in the 1940s, Tubbs’ parents, Winnie and Buell Tubbs, took over. Tubbs describes her father, a former Marine drill instructor, as a man who could split wood all day and carry a hundred-pound canoe over a milelong, uphill-both-ways portage. He once came into the kitchen with an ax buried in his shin. He also bravely lobbed firecrackers at one trash-seeking bear and shooed another one off by whacking its tush with a broom. Tubbs had the run of the resort with two half-siblings, a couple of cousins and the teenage staff who lived on-site. She spent her childhood running around barefoot, catching frogs, water skiing “until our arms and legs fell off.” She swam or fished off the dock and roasted marshmallows around the bonfire. “My best friend would be in camp one week, and then they’d leave, and then a new best friend would be in camp,” Tubbs said. “So I always had kids to run with.” Chores were equally abundant. Turning over cabins and washing “a heck of a lot” of dishes were typical tasks for girls. Boys sold minnows, bailed boats and hauled water. Tubbs went to college in San Diego and spent summers at camp. In her 20s, she moved to a city north of San Francisco to work as a reporter, where she met her future husband, Tom Speros, a self-described “city kid.” In 1984, after Tubbs’ mother had died, she and Speros moved to the camp. Their tenure literally started with a bang — they arrived to find Buell on the porch, aiming a gun at a red squirrel. At least Buell had not tried to ward off his new son-in-law. “Tom was really game, but he was learning everything,” Tubbs explained. “And my dad was not amused by that.” Tubbs and Speros replaced the wooden boats with aluminum ones and added showers to the central bathroom building. The couple ran the camp for nearly two decades before Speros died, leaving Tubbs as the sole proprietor. Tubbs’ most recent big change was installing Wi-Fi in the office, where she spends her days among racks of life jackets, stacks of puzzles and shelves of books for borrowing, all watched over by a taxidermized mink. A century-old map of Burntside Lake — the west and north shores are labeled “roadless area” — hangs under a sign that reads “No whining.” Taped to the office’s front door is a list of “6 Things You Need to Know.” Amid useful information about settling up and checking out, pontoon rental rates and procedures for outdoor fires, is this nonsequitur: “Butterflies taste with their feet.” It kind of tells you everything you need to know about Tubbs: The no-nonsense proprietor has a wry side, too. Van Vac guests are fond of saying they feel like family, and Tubbs plays the role of de-facto matriarch, keeping the peace so all can enjoy it. (Her dock and swim raft policy reads: “No pushing. No shoving. No exceptions. When it occurs, the raft will be pulled out of the lake for the rest of the week. FAIR WARNING, Y’ALL!”) Tubbs may be a self-proclaimed introvert, not at all gushy or effusive, but she’s cultivated an environment where guests feel at home. And inspired to give back. Each May and October, volunteers show up for seasonal work weekends — a practice hard to imagine at a mega-resort. The crew washes windows, hangs curtains, replaces drawer paper, rakes leaves — and plays pranks, including one involving barbecue sauce applied to a doorknob. Jacque Passow of Minneapolis has been attending work weekends since Tubbs took over and said that, as someone who mostly sits at a desk all day, she relishes the sense of accomplishment that comes from refilling the woodshed. “It’s the perfect way to get away from your life,” she said of Van Vac. “There’s just a magic about it. You’ve got cold running water, you’ve got a wood-burning stove. What more do you need? Maybe a mouse trap?” In the guest books, Van Vac visitors rave about the small moments that make up a relaxing vacation: the breathtaking blanket of stars, lapping waves and loons, hot-cheese bologna Thursdays at the local grocery, long naps. But guests also see Van Vac as a place to celebrate major life milestones. One caught a “keeper” by tying a diamond ring to a fishing line. “If you are lucky enough to find this place, it is proof once again that you do not have to be a millionaire to live like one!” one visitor wrote. “There is nowhere in the world where life makes more sense than on these paths next to this lake,” penned another. Colleen Krebs, of Minneapolis, first came to Van Vac at 4 months old and got married on one of Burntside’s islands. She typically spends a month at camp, often joined by relatives from as far away as California — undeterred by having once encountered a bear in her cabin’s kitchen. (She hadn’t shut the door.) Krebs is one of the few guests who remember Aunt Kate. “She was really kind of strict and known to kick people out if they didn’t behave properly,” Krebs recalled. But Krebs also noted that one of her cousins, who worked at Van Vac as a teenager and was fired after burning down a shed, somehow managed to return as a guest. “It’s a place where people really develop a loyalty and affection,” Krebs said. Tubbs doesn’t have children, and as she got older, longtime guests wondered about Van Vac’s fate. They were relieved to learn that Tubbs’ handpicked successor was right there among them: Derek Houtkooper, her longtime right-hand-man. Houtkooper, who is in his early 40s, discovered Van Vac when he was bartending at the historic Burntside Lodge nearby. He oversees maintenance of the cabins and grounds, meaning he might be replacing a light fixture, filling gravel-road washouts, jumping a guest’s truck battery, or retrieving a 14-foot Lund some city slicker abandoned after flooding the motor. (Oops.) Over time, Houtkooper came to know the property’s quirks, including that the cabins are numbered in the order they were built. He learned which aging guests need help hauling gear, how to manage Cabin 12′s fussy faucet, and, generally, to jury-rig a so-called “Van Vac-ish” repair when a full-scale fix isn’t possible. (His sign in the women’s restroom reads: “Caution! Please sit gently. Toilet is loose due to sinking floor.”) During the shoulder seasons, Houtkooper staves off decay that could become an excuse to tear down the cabins. He glazes windows and pressure-washes and stains the old logs to keep out weather and beetles. “I feel like I’m kind of a protector from this being developed,” he said of the property. Tubbs also has been training Houtkooper’s partner, Jessica Meyer, on office operations. The couple plan to move into Tubbs’ home on-site (Tubbs will live in Ely), and they look forward to giving their kids a more carefree, nature-immersed lifestyle. “It’s an experience that you can’t have anywhere,” Meyer said. Houtkooper says he appreciates how Van Vac’s guests don’t mind eschewing modern conveniences. And how Van Vac’s extended “family” helps contribute to its upkeep. When the place lost power for a week after a massive blowdown in 2016, guests with canceled reservations showed up anyway to help with the cleanup. Houtkooper and Meyer plan to make a few tweaks to Van Vac, including reviving the naturalist programs, potlucks and singalongs that dwindled during COVID. They plan to restock the 50-year-old pop machine, and, eventually, build cross-county ski trails and a couple of winterized cabins on the adjacent property. But mostly the couple see themselves as guardians of the Van Vac legacy and keepers of its pristine land. “From the first time that I stepped onto this property, I felt a deep connection with this place,” Houtkooper said. “I think there’s a lot of people that feel the same way, because they spread their loved ones’ ashes here.” Rachel Hutton writes lifestyle and human-interest stories for the Minnesota Star Tribune.
