year’s May to August,” said the Head of Atambua Immigration Office The passport applications are linked to the upcoming Pope Francis-led Mass in Timor Leste Indra explained that passport applications on regular days only range from 20 to 25 people per day “But ahead of Pope Francis’ arrival there’s as many as 80 passport applications per day,” he said the Immigration Office recorded 835 applicants which rose to 1,017 people in June The passport applications slightly dropped in July with 994 applicants and again in August with 816 applications.  Indra said the uptick in passport applications indicates a positive shift as NTT residents seem to acknowledge the necessity of passports as one of the requirements for overseas trips He added that Atambua Immigration is ready to aid those who frontier town at the edge of the Nusa Tenggara Timor region the emotional terrains of its characters are bleak and incomplete featuring actors whose own life experiences mimic the plot this surprisingly tender film has a storyline that is simple but not thin A gradual coalescing of three individuals adrift in in this barren land fractured existence of the dispossessed who left Timor-Leste in 1999 and moved throughout the islands of Nusa Tenggara Timor Reynaldo (Petrus Beyleto) is an alcoholic bus driver unable to remain sober enough to confront his own conscience His son Joao (Gudino Soares) clings to hope and his childhood by forlornly listening to a series of tape recordings made by his mother beseeching both father and son to return home Nikkia (Putri Moruk) returns to Atambua in search of her grandfather’s elusive existence and perhaps Riri Riza’s greatest strength is the re-creation of the environment his characters inhabit Their homes are minimal constructions on arid There are few possessions for the large tin doors to protect Memories are preserved through faded photographs framed behind grimy glass and in dusty weaves of cloth brought years ago from Timor-Leste Water for drinking and personal hygiene is scarce In the centre of town are a few dimly-lit pool halls and a gymnasium where the sinewy Joao and his friends lift weights when they are not aimlessly driving around on small motorcycles Every so often the story is interrupted with a scene of local ritual – a religious procession We are treated to the gorgeous beauty of the Timor Sea that lies just beyond the city limits The characters blend almost seamlessly into their surroundings suspending for us the artifice of cinematic construction and drawing us effortlessly into the desolate The adolescent Joao is bewitched by the beautiful curly-haired Nikkia who speaks little and torments the boy with long She soon recruits the willing Joao to haul rocks for her Her mission is to create a shrine to the memory of her recently deceased grandfather Joao’s only respite from a life spent cleaning up his father’s drunken vomit is tagging along with Nikkia in the hope of winning her affection The story is jostled from the dreariness it seems resigned to when Reynaldo loses his job for being intoxicated and subsequently ends up in jail for attacking a man who accuses him of murder surprised and confused when Joao clumsily and forcefully declares his passion for her flees to Kupang on the western edge of the island It is only towards the end of the film that the characters’ intimate thoughts and introspections guide the narrative via a three-way voice-over We hear that Nikkia had been raped repeatedly when she had first arrived as a refugee Reynaldo sobers up and realises that he needs to return home and face his past and his family All three reunite in Kupang where Nikkia forgives Joao and bids both father and son well for their journey to Timor-Leste Riza shows directorial restraint by refusing to over-sentimentalise the reunion at the end ‘It’s about the greater spiritual longing of many people there to find their home and place of belonging To show one family’s reunion would have taken away from that’ he tells me after the film’s European premiere in Rotterdam We can only look forward to be taken on another cinematic journey by Riri Riza eager student intern in the Ministry of Environment on my way from the El Tari airport to my hotel faraway town that seemed blissfully immune to the frantic pace of Jakarta the people here weren’t poor in spirit; they radiated a contentment that was as rich as or maybe richer than anything I’d encountered before and I found it subtly but undeniably changed there was a growing hum of development—new roads and the palpable energy of a place straddling two worlds Kupang was starting to catch up with Jakarta’s relentless tempo swept into the tide of modernisation and market economy that has left few corners of the world untouched fast-food chains available for uninterrupted service from early morning to late evening I found myself drawn back to Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra which I’d taught to students for years in the Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia a simulation of Jakarta’s developmental model: a vision of progress crafted by infrastructure projects and paved highways that promise a better future The loss of communal spaces and time—siestas marketplaces and the ebb and flow of Kupang’s slower pace of life Lefebvre’s concept of ‘produced space,’ where landscapes are shaped by social interactions is perhaps even more visible in Kupang’s border neighbour Largely populated by the indigenous Atoni people bound by its own mix of indigenous customs and cultural hybridity once a rugged path through untamed terrain is now lined with construction—a visible line of ‘progress’ through what was once considered feral and untouchable land This border zone has become not only a territorial marker but a site of economic opportunity a boundary defined as much by capital flows as by the interactions of those who live within its spaces Border towns like Atambua - where I visited twice in 2022 first in March then in November - encapsulate this production of space where physical landscapes morph to fit the aspirations of those in power Once a small border town with the pace of a village Atambua is turning into a cross-border economic zone symbolising the promise of the ‘better life’ that development supposedly brings these changes are a double-edged sword: they’re now part of Indonesia’s push toward regional connectivity an aspiration that resonates nationally but feels a little more complex on the ground The farmland here now serves a different function—its purpose transformed by a vision of economic progress that doesn’t necessarily serve the lives it impacts most directly As I travelled these routes and spoke to people the question of choice—who gets to choose this future—seemed to hang in the air the choices offered by capitalism are often no more than simulacra illusions crafted to create a sense of autonomy where choices are shaped by distant markets and urban planners in Jakarta Kupang’s residents may have the ‘choice’ to join the rush toward modernisation but it’s not clear that this choice will necessarily make their lives better once a choice rooted in culture and climate The market vendors who once closed shop and napped in the heat are now being nudged by the changing economy to stay open all day stretching their working hours to compete with larger stores and imported goods even if that hustle erodes the very rhythm that once made life here unique The balance is delicate: people are told to cherish tradition while the forces of change alter the context of that tradition Kupang is now seen as a stepping-stone—a place to make money and eventually leave for the big cities The younger generation yearns for the bustle of Jakarta They pursue the urban ideal that places wealth and material success above community and contentment Lefebvre’s notion of ‘produced space’ finds new meaning: the spaces once marked by leisurely rhythms and community are being repurposed for economic transactions and aspirations not born here illustrate the tension between preservation and progress They stand as testaments to the resilience of communities in the face of the rapid but the enduring challenge for Kupang is whether it can retain its spirit amid the shifting landscape expanding infrastructure and the hum of development contented life is worth the potential of economic opportunities or remaining in tune with community values the allure of capital is too strong to ignore and the shifting landscape signal something else—an uncertain future where the contours of contentment are redrawn with each new mile of asphalt At this crossroad of cultures and economies Kupang and Atambua become a microcosm of a larger struggle: the struggle to reconcile the intangible richness of local heritage with the relentless march of progress the question isn’t just about choosing between tradition and progress but finding a way to hold on to the essence of both the challenge is to preserve a space for siesta and for a kind of wealth that isn’t measured in rupiah It’s a reminder that not all choices lead to happiness and that the true wealth lies in the pauses—the chance to stop Abellia Anggi Wardani (abellia@ui.ac.id) is a lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities
