alat-alat berat bekerja membersihkan lahan
berupa jalur berisi tumpukan kayu-kayu kecil
Kalau dilanjutkan terus (pembabatan hutan)
Dalam laporan berjudul Burning Paradise: Palm Oil in The Land of the Tree Kangaroo ini menyebutkan
TSE mengumumkan tiga bulan moratorium alias tak membuka lahan baru
mereka berjanji memperbaiki diri seperti nol deforestasi
perusahaan menuduh warga sengaja membakar lahan pertanian mereka
Jalur penumpukan kayu (stacking) mulai dibuat
hanya tinggal lahan kosong bercampur sisa-sisa tebangan kayu
Sejak mulai Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE)
untuk proyek pangan ternyata banyak masuk investasi sawit
aparat militer sangat berkepentingan,” katanya
yang menjadi eksekutor lapangan agar warga mau menyerahkan atau memberi izin atas lahan mereka
sebagai manusia biasa takut dengan militer
stigma kalau melawan disebut Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM)
“Benarkah masyarakat sejahtera?”
Kondisi menyedihkan malah banyak terlihat di kampung-kampung dekat konsesi
tak punya hutan buat menggantungkan hidup dari berburu sampai memanfaatkan sumber lain
Mereka kehilangan hutan karena jadi konsesi Korindo
“Soal jualan sejahtera kala investor masuk
warga berdemonstrasi menuntut penghentian operasi GWM
Walhi Malut menggugat Korindo atas beberapa permasalahan seperti warga makin kesulitan air bersih
sampai mempertanyakan izin hak guna usaha (HGU)
Tuntutan lain soal penanaman sawit di lereng curam
mereka mendesak pemerintah bertindak tegas
“Kami minta hal sama seperti diminta Presiden
“APL (area penggunaan lain-red) bukan hutan

defunct air carrier Hageland Aviation paid out $2.5 million in a lawsuit filed against them
This closes a chapter in the now six-year-old story of pilot Zach Babat
who was killed in a 2016 midair collision involving two small commercial airplanes
Babat was piloting a Piper Super Cub for Bethel-based Renfro’s Alaskan Adventures
He and a Renfro’s guide were flying from Bethel to a hunting camp
That’s when a Cessna Caravan took off from Russian Mission and essentially ascended into Babat’s plane
Both planes tumbled to the ground and all seven people on board
filed the lawsuit against Hageland Aviation
the motivation was to show that the other party was at fault
And to make them push to improve their safety,” said Pride
The lawsuit against Hageland Aviation alleges that the company was completely at fault
Attorneys for Pride hired aviation experts who concluded that the pilot of the Cessna Caravan should have had a clear view of Babat’s plane while taking off
Pride said that her husband was known throughout the state for his high safety standards as a pilot of nearly two decades
“My husband flew for Hageland [Aviation] for a little while
And he left because of safety concerns,” said Pride
but Pride said that she sees the high dollar amount as an admission of the carrier’s wrongdoing
because we know Zach was not at fault in this
And so I feel like I did my job for Zach and his good name
and for Renfro’s [Alaskan Adventures],” said Pride
But Pride thinks that airline safety in Alaska still has a long way to go
An investigation by Unalaska public radio station KUCB and ProPublica in 2021 revealed that Alaska is the most dangerous state for small airline travel
KUCB reported that almost half of the nation’s small plane crashes are in Alaska
And there have been five midair collisions in the five years following Babat’s plane crash
The report attributed the crashes largely to inexperienced pilots
lack of support while flying in remote areas
Pride said that the lawsuit was agonizing, and lasted as many as two extra years due to the pandemic. She is glad this chapter of her life is behind her. She’s looking forward to continuing her work with Babat’s estate. He was a prolific wildland painter who took much of his inspiration from scenes he witnessed in Alaska
she has set up a scholarship in his name for art students in Babat’s two beloved homes of Alaska and Montana
Nine Salve Regina students from the undergraduate psychology program and graduate behavior analysis program recently attended the Massachusetts Professionals in Behavior Analysis (BABAT) annual conference
taking home two awards for their posters and presentations
BABAT attracts presentations from prominent researchers from around the world,” said Dr
assistant professor and graduate program director for behavior analysis
“Students attending the conference get a chance to meet and learn from leaders in the field of behavior analysis
and students who present at BABAT get an opportunity to share and discuss their research with these leaders.”
Although Morris has attended the conference previously
this was the first BABAT experience for his students
accounting for 35% of the student poster presentations
’22 (M) and graduate student Jacob Oliveira won first place in the poster competition
and Tatiana Pullar ’22 (M) won the only honorable mention of the event
“Several conference attendees approached me during the poster session to rave about the quality of the students’ research and the professionalism of their presentations,” Morris said
“I was delighted by how well all of the students presented and felt very honored to be involved with each of their presentations
The students deserve to feel gratified in their collective accomplishment – not only did they represent Salve exceptionally well
but they also shared important research that can help improve the treatment for highly vulnerable populations
such as individuals with severe developmental disabilities.”
The topics that the students presented included strategies related to teaching sight words to children with developmental disabilities
assessing and treating problematic behavior
data collection integrity and state licensing laws for behavior analysis
“The Effects of Using Compound Stimuli to Train Sight Words,” investigated effective stimulus presentation methods for teaching students to identify sight words
“The basis of the project is adhere caution when teaching sight words using compound stimuli and to assess it before wasting time teaching a skill with faulty stimulus control,” Oliveira said
“Participating in BABAT was a fantastic professional development opportunity to network and get feedback from other professionals in the field as I begin my journey as a professional in the field of behavior analysis,” Gray said
“It is always an honor to attend these conferences and represent Salve and the behavior analysis program.”
This experience was made possible through the Sister Jane Gerety Experiential Learning Fund
Tatiana Pullar ’22 (M) won the only honorable mention of BABAT
daughter of Robert and JoAnn Babat of North Kingstown
took place at The Peristyle in New Orleans City Park
Leah Babat was her sister’s maid of honor and Luke Entrup was best man for his brother
Emily Price and Heather Hoffman were the bridesmaids
Brian Myers and Chris Bechler were the ushers
The bride graduated from North Kingstown High School
Rhode Island College and the University of Vermont
She is a social worker at the KIPP McDonogh 15 Primary School in New Orleans
a graduate of Quincy Notre Dame High School and the University of St
attends the University of New Orleans and is a fire and stewardship technician at The Nature Conservancy
The couple returned to their home in New Orleans after a honeymoon in Iceland
Nov 11: Supt Collin Babat is now the acting Sibu district police chief following the retirement of his predecessor
Supt Collin who has been ACP Stanley’s deputy for the past two years
took over from the latter at a ceremony which was witnessed by State Commissioner of Police
ACP Stanley said that he wanted the police to remain committed to crime prevention work
“I believe my successor will be able to uphold the responsibility and trust given by the top leaders of the force
including achieving its the vision and mission,” he said
ACP Stanley is retiring after serving the force for almost 39 years
He took the helm of Sibu OCPD on January 6
“I take this opportunity to congratulate the efforts of all staff in Sibu OCPD in reducing the crime index rate for the year 2021 by 41.02 per cent to 313 cases from 40 cases a year earlier,” he said
ACP Stanley hoped that the Sibu police force will continue to increase crime prevention efforts
either through community policing or conventional policing
to ensure that the government’s aim of reducing crimes can be achieved
“The success in reducing the crime rate rests on the shoulders of all PDRM staff members and it requires a high level of cooperation and commitment,” he emphasised
he also wanted them to carry out community policing activities so that the community could feel their presence
especially in residential areas and hotspots
“This effort is necessary to increase the community’s trust of the police to prevent crimes such as housebreaking as well as motorcycle and car theft,” he said
ACP Stanley called on members of the force to give their full support to Supt Collin similar to what they had shown him
he said he would be back with his family in Saratok
Datuk Aidi in thanking ACP Stanley for his service
said that the officer had achieved much during his years of service
“Tuan Stanley has performed his duty with full dedication and committment as seen by the improved security in the town,” he said

Turkey was adjudged to a compensation fine of €20,000 (TL 42,000) by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the murder case of Önder Babat. The ECHR decreed that the investigation launched into the events around the unsolved murder of university student Babat was insufficient.
25-year-old Babat was shot in his head with a 9 mm bullet after he had left the office of the Revolutionary Movement magazine in Beyoğlu (Istanbul) together with three friends. It has not been found out who the attackers were, where they came from and why they shot Babat.
In the decision taken on 12 January, the ECHR turned down the claim of three Babat family members that Önder Babat became subject to an extrajudicial execution by the state security forces. However, the court accepted the claim that the public officials did not carry out an effective investigation related to the event.
The court ruled for € 15,000 to be paid to Aziz and Azime Babat and another € 5,000 to Marifet Akgün. The ECHR concluded that article 2 of the European Convention of Human Rights on the right to life was violated by not conducting an effective investigation. (EÖ/VK)
ShareSaveTechHow Indians Defied Gravity and Achieved Success in Silicon ValleyBySingularity University Affiliate
If you visited Silicon Valley in the ‘50s and ‘60s the only Indians you would meet were a few low-level engineers who came to the U.S
Indians were stereotyped as beggars and snake charmers
and finding them in leadership positions in the technology industry was unimaginable
They also started helping each other and formed their own entrepreneurial networks
UC-Berkeley School of Information dean AnnaLee Saxenian discovered that Indian-born entrepreneurs had founded 7% of all Silicon Valley startups between 1980 and 1998
By forming their own networks and mentoring each other
they had changed the perception of Indian technologists
They showed America that they could indeed be CEOs
Nearly eight years after Saxenian published her findings, Professor Vivek Wadhwa partnered with her and Professor F
Daniel Siciliano of Stanford Law School to update and expand the research
Twenty five percent of the nation’s startups and 52% of those in Silicon Valley were founded by immigrants
Indian immigrants were the leading company founding group
They founded 13.4% of Silicon Valley’s startups and 6.5% of those nationwide
because Indian immigrants comprised much less than 1% of U.S
I worked with Professor Wadhwa at Stanford University to once again update this research. Kauffman Foundation just published our report titled Then and Now: America’s New Immigrant Entrepreneurs
We learned that because of flaws in the U.S
Skilled immigrants are trapped in limbo and they cannot get the visas necessary to start companies
they are becoming more and more frustrated and returning to their home countries to start companies and bring innovation there instead of the U.S
The decline in the proportion of immigrant founded startups reflects this trend
the proportion has dropped from 25.3% to 24.3%
and the decline is even greater in Silicon Valley—from 52.4% to 43.9%
This is very bad news for America—the country needs startups now more than ever to revive its economy
But the biggest surprise—or should I say shock—is that Indians are dominating immigrant entrepreneurship
Indians founded 8% of all technology and engineering startups and yet still comprise less than 1% of the U.S
Our research has shown that Indians now outnumber the next 7 immigrant groups combined and start 33.2% of all immigrant-founded startups in the U.S
The proportion of all immigrant founded companies has fallen in Silicon Valley
but Indians have resisted this downward trend
the proportion of all Silicon Valley companies founded by Indians has slightly increased from 13.4% to 14% since 2007
When we reviewed the initial survey results
The Indian numbers could not have increased so dramatically
We took an additional sample of 160 Silicon Valley companies to retest our findings—but the results stayed the same
Indians are achieving extraordinary success in Silicon Valley
We found that Indians start more companies than any other immigrant group in California (26%)
especially since Indians only represent between 0.7% and 3.4% of the populations of these states
Indians also lead all immigrant groups in the number of companies founded in the following industries: biosciences (35%)
innovation/manufacturing-related services (29%)
It’s remarkable that Indians have achieved such high levels of success in spite of U.S
Skilled immigrants of all nationalities are experiencing visa difficulties and hardships that hamper their efforts to start new businesses
Imagine what all of these immigrants could do if America provided the visas necessary to start companies and share the American Dream
