up to 10 meters hit the coastal area on June 3 The tsunami monument built in the village records that 229 people died on the coasts of Pancer the disaster occurred without being preceded by a strong earthquake shock so it was known as a silent tsunami or an earthquake tsunami Exactly at 01.17 WIB on Friday, June 3 1994, an earthquake measuring magnitude (M) 7.2 occurred off the southern coast of East Java The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be around 225 km south of Malang at 10 degrees South Latitude and 112.74 East Longitude Several eyewitnesses reported not feeling a strong earthquake was counting the money donated by residents for his grandson who was circumcised when the disaster occurred you can hear the mastermind just starting the gara-gara scene "Suddenly there was a loud noise from the audience We initially thought a thief had been caught the plaster floor of the house broke and water came out," he said (Kompas A field survey report by earthquake expert Tsuji Y from the Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) and tsunami expert Imamura F from Tohoku University also stated that only about 10 to 20 percent of residents living closest to the earthquake's source felt the tremors The survey carried out by the Japanese team which also involved tsunami expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology The results of this survey were reported in the journal Pageoph in 1995 Chairman of the Indonesian Tsunami Experts Association (IATSI) Gegar Prasetya who at that time was still working at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) The first field survey conducted by Indonesian researchers together with foreign experts following the tsunami led to the establishment of the Tsunami Research Center-BPPT in Yogyakarta a research team from Japan conducted their own survey at the disaster location the weak shaking was also marked by the absence of building damage caused by the earthquake that night The highest reported tsunami was recorded to be 13.9 meters occurring at the eastern entrance of the residential area in Rajegwesi Village the length of the coastline affected by the tsunami with a height exceeding four meters reached about 300 km Several villages in East Java Province were severely damaged around 70 percent of houses were swept away and 121 people died due to the tsunami Most victims were located in Pancer Hamlet Reconstruction carried out by tsunami researcher at the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN) showed that the areas most affected by the 1994 tsunami were the southern coast of Banyuwangi The highest tsunami occurred in the south of Jember namely 10 meters on the coast and the run up or wave propagation height on land was 20 meters The tsunami also hit the west coast of Bali with a run up of up to 5 meters The average tsunami arrival time is 25-30 minutes after the earthquake Also read: Remembering the Earthquake and Tsunami on the South Coast of Java Island in 2006 The height of the tsunami in Banyuwangi compared to the earthquake shocks which tended to be weak has raised questions among researchers the character of the tsunami in Banyuwangi is called an earthquake tsunami the waves on the coast are much higher than tsunamis from earthquake sources with the same relative magnitude some call it astealth tsunami or silent tsunami The term earthquake tsunami was first coined by a seismologist from ERI This is to differentiate it from other tsunamis that usually occur the waves on the coast are several times higher than a tsunami from an earthquake source with the same relative magnitude Kanamori stated that the conclusion about the earthquake tsunami anomaly was obtained after examining the earthquake in Sanriku but it caused a giant tsunami with a height of 30 meters on Sanriku Island which was about 200 kilometers from the epicenter The earthquake in the Aleutian in 1946 caused one of the largest tsunamis in the Pacific in the last century - data obtained before the Sendai tsunami in March 2011 the earthquake magnitude that caused the tsunami according to Gutenberg and Richter's data from 1954 The strength of the earthquake was relatively small The impact of the tsunami was also very large "We call this anomaly an earthquake tsunami," said Kanamori the plaster floor of the house broke and water leaked out Earthquake tsunamis like the one that occurred in Banyuwangi in 1994 can be more deadly because they cause people to misperceive thinking that the earthquake will not be followed by a tsunami because the shaking was not too strong Because the character of earthquakes tends to be slow and long several other experts often use the term slow-earthquake The subduction zone in Java is considered vulnerable to earthquake earthquake tsunamis in 2006 was also classified into this type In the case of a tsunami triggered by an earthquake measuring M 7.7 the tsunami height should be only 2 meters to 4 meters the tsunami that occurred in Pangandaran at that time was 8 meters high and some even reached 21 meters in Nusakambangan The high tsunami in Nusakambangan at that time was also triggered by tapered topography There are several possibilities why southern Java is vulnerable to earthquake tsunamis One of them is a seamount whose position is blocking the rate of subduction of the oceanic plate beneath the continental plate the collapse of rocks after the earthquake is slow Directly facing the collision zone between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates the southern coast of Java will always face the threat of tsunamis It is only a matter of time before earthquakes and tsunamis once again hit the southern part of East Java Referring to the 2017 National Earthquake Source Map the earthquake-prone zone in South East Java can experience earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 8.7 The earthquake modeling conducted by BMKG suggests that if this earthquake occurs the southern coast of Banyuwangi could be hit by a tsunami with a height of 24-27 meters and an estimated arrival time of around 24-27 minutes after the earthquake The tsunami could also hit the southern coasts of Pacitan settlements in tsunami-prone areas in South East Java settlements along the southern coast of Java are currently more densely populated than before Learning from the Banyuwangi tsunami in 1994 most of the buildings that were destroyed at that time were located on the southern roads of the village tourist attractions have been built on the south coast of East Java Also read: The History of the Gunung Ruang Island Tsunami and the Risks in the Future It should be noted that the characteristics of a tsunamiearthquake can also occur again if a strong earthquake occurs in the south of Java This means that disaster literacy on the vulnerable southern coast of Java also includes narratives about the deadly silent tsunami Baca Versi Bh Indonesia The gold mine on Mount Tumpang Pitu (Sumberagung village Its birth is recounted in Ika Ningtyas' book Dua sisi Tumpang Pitu: kilau emas dan kerusakan lingkungan (Two sides of Tumpang Pitu: gold lustre and environmental damage the firm PT Hakman Metalindo was granted a Mining Authorisation to explore an area of 62,586 hectares This included the important conservation area PT Hakman Metalindo operated the mine through three subsidiaries: PT Hakman Emas Metalindo (5,386 hectares) PT Hakman Platina Metalindo (25,930 hectares) and PT Hakman Perak Metalindo (25,120 hectares) The company began paving the way for a gold mine in the Meru Betiri area the Banyuwangi district head made the bold decision to revoke the mining licence thus ending their path to further gold mining endeavours The Banyuwangi authorities then transferred the licence to PT Indo Multi Cipta (IMC) which changed its name to PT Indo Multi Niaga (IMN) in 2006 PT IMN obtained an Exploration Mining Business Licence (IUP Exploration) covering 11,621.45 hectares in Pesanggaran District PT IMN lacked the capital to conduct exploration Then in 2012 PT IMN unexpectedly transferred its licence to PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI) a subsidiary of PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk (MCG) This move triggered a dispute with Intrepid Mines an Australian company that had previously been PT IMN's business partner Intrepid felt cheated in the licence transfer process The conflict finally ended after Intrepid sold its shares to Kendall Court Resources Investments Ltd PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI) quickly obtained a Production Operation Mining Business Permit (IUP OP) covering an area of 4,998 hectares PT MCG also formed a subsidiary called PT Damai Suksesindo (DSI) to exploit Mount Tumpang Pitu This time the area was larger: it included the villages of Sumberagung PT DSI then obtained an Exploration IUP covering an area of 6,623 hectares PT Merdeka Copper Gold (MCG) became the main controller of the mine at Mount Tumpang Pitu supported by a network of national and international investors The mine's future was strengthened after it was incorporated into the 2012-2032 Banyuwangi land-use plan (RTRW) which allocated 22,600 hectares for mining in Pesanggaran and Siliragung sub-districts The Tumpang Pitu gold mine has gone through various phases of licence and ownership changes from the hands of Hakman Metalindo to finally being controlled by PT Merdeka Copper Gold through its subsidiaries The concession continues to undergo significant expansion with the production licence valid until 2030 This long licensing journey reflects the way mining interests continue to flourish in the region despite conflicts and policy changes involving the fate of natural resources and neighbouring communities The story of resistance to the Tumpang Pitu gold mine is almost as long as the story of the mine itself Menambang emas di tanah bencana (Mining gold in the land of disaster The first round of resistance took place from 2007-2012 and the third from 2019-2023 - all of which are interconnected The first round began when people became aware of the impact of mining exploration on their environment and livelihoods The Anti-Mining Community Movement (Gerakan Masyarakat Anti Tambang It was initiated in 2007 by five local citizens concerned about the presence of PT Indo Multi Niaga (IMN) Although without any experience in organising large actions they began to protest against company trucks carrying heavy equipment This initiative became the first step towards a broader resistance tensions escalated as mining expansion continued peole managed to stop dozens of trucks carrying heavy equipment This event sparked widespread support from neighbouring communities more than 3,000 citizens took to the streets for a large demonstration in front of the PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI) office This became one of the largest demonstrations in Banyuwangi's socio-political history bringing huge repercussions for the local community and government The year 2016 was a turning point in the resistance A 'struggle coordination post' (posko perjuangan) was established in Pancer Hamlet located on the coast at Sumberagung Village This became the coordination centre for the entire action but also the beginning of the criminalisation of the community PT BSI began gold mining operations on 1 December 2016 Budi Pego and three other villagers were arrested on charges of spreading communism a controversial charge that was part of an attempt to silence the resistance all four of them were named as suspects before being released to await proceedings an appeal to the Supreme Court (MA) led to Budi Pego's sentence being increased to 4 years in prison no re-arrest or further detention followed the Supreme Court's decision symbolic actions became the main strategy for citizens to attract wider attention travelling hundreds of kilometres to protest directly to the East Java provincial government repression against the movement became increasingly evident when citizens blocked the road to the site in protest against expansion of the mine Major clashes ensued with security personnel People began to focus on rejecting the mine’s expansion to Mount Salakan - neighbouring Mount Tumpang Pitu They blocked company workers out to explore the area Action also took the form of setting up a tent of struggle and solidarity as a space to meet and a place to monitor the company's activities so they would not go up Mount Salakan there was a clash with the authorities as the company tried to forcefully enter Mount Salakan Budi Pego was re-arrested by the security forces on the pretext of serving the remaining 3 years of his sentence Peole’s resistance to Tumpang Pitu has grown from a local action to a large movement with widespread support One of their main issues remains agrarian conflict in Pancer Hamlet due to the granting of Mining Business Licence (IUP) This indicates that popular resistance to the Tumpang Pitu mine remains alive and continues to this day The rejection of the Mount Tumpang Pitu gold mine is not just a knee-jerk reaction but a reflection of peoples’ deep sadness at the environmental and social impacts caused have long witnessed how mining has changed their lives What was promised as development and welfare has instead led to threats to ecosystems Mount Tumpang Pitu used to be a protected forest that played an important role in maintaining ecological balance in coastal Banyuwangi Gold mining has caused large-scale deforestation and increased the risk of disasters such as landslides and floods Springs that have been a source of livelihood for farmers are slowly drying up The Katakan River that previously irrigated rice fields is now being embanked by the mining company Disasters have become increasingly familiar to people living around the Tumpang Pitu concession starting with successive floods from 2019-2021 The 2019 and 2020 protests were caused by flooding Mining activities also disturb neighbouring villagers In 2024 an enormous explosion in May 2024 caused buildings to vibrate in the tourist resort of Pulau Merah Many tourists panicked and scattered to save themselves Then in November 2024 blasting caused the whole of Mount Tumpang Pitu to collapse creating an avalanche that went directly into the sea The event reminded fishermen in Pancer Hamlet of the mud flood of 2016 where land-clearing activities by the mine caused flooding mixed with mud that eventually also entered the sea The Tumpang Pitu gold mine has also begun to have an economic impact on the lives of Sumberagung villagers The development of the mine has gone hand in hand with a decline in their livelihoods The majority of local residents depend on agriculture and fisheries but both are now threatened by pollution and land conversion One of the impacts they feel is the condition of the Katakan River This has been the main source of irrigation for farmers causing many farms to lose their water supply Farmers have begun to complain that their once fertile agricultural land is now shrinking and experiencing a water crisis the strongest indications from dragon fruit farmers The village is known as a large dragon fruit producer It has been a mainstay of Sumberagung villagers for the past 15 years The farmers are now complaining that fruit production is not optimal One of their complaints of course relates to access to water as well as the potential for flooding during the rainy season They fear it fear when the Katakan River overflows Even worse impacts are experienced by fishing folk They have experienced a significant decrease in catches due to environmental pollution from mining waste The fishers group in Pancer Hamlet revealed that since the mine began operating they have had to go more than 5 miles offshore Many fish have disappeared from the coastline due to the destruction of their habitat in 2010 the total fish catch reached 10,280 tonnes It has shrunk by about 1/4 since the mud flood of 2016 – to only 8,106 tonnes The tourism sector has also been badly affected Sumberagung village used to be famous for its beautiful beaches making it an alternative destination for foreign fishing enthusiasts who were tired of Bali The tourist spot was called Pulau Merah (Red Island) The Banyuwangi District Government even included it as a major tourist destination in its Visit Banyuwangi programme Pulau Merah has become increasingly deserted Pulau Merah is no longer as beautiful as before The scenery is disturbed by the loss of the Tumpang Pitu protected forest to mining activities blasting activities by the mine have discouraged tourists Farmers whose commodity production has declined fishermen whose catches have declined and the tourism sector which has begun to fall off the mine has become a problem for the entire local economy Many people have been forced to migrate or to look for work as outsourcing labourers for the mine How ironic: they are forcibly losing the economic independence they had built up over many years Mining not only brings environmental impacts but also worsens the social conditions of residents The bad luck experienced by people of Pancer Hamlet is an example they were already struggling to obtain land rights because they were occupying land controlled by the state logging company (Perhutani) The hamlet of Pancer was originally a protected forest area directly adjacent to the sea an earthquake followed by a tsunami hit the Banyuwangi area the population in Pancer had been relatively small The tsunami destroyed most of the settlement the government relocated residents to safer areas Residents were left with legal uncertainty over the land they occupied the status of land in Pancer has become increasingly blurred as Perhutani began claiming the area as part of its territory The burden on residents was further increased when mining concessions were issued on behalf of PT BSI and PT DSI This certainly puts residents in the shadow of eviction Without ever being involved in the decision to grant mining licences they feel their land rights are being unilaterally seized The biggest threat for Pancer residents at this time is forced eviction With the land still considered part of the Perhutani area people have no legal certainty over their homes and land they could be forced off the land they have occupied for decades they continue to fight to defend their rights to land and the environment that is increasingly threatened by the expansion of the mining industry supported by the power of capital and government policies that do not favour the people People’s rejection of mining at Tumpang Pitu is not without foundation What they have done until now is nothing less than a struggle to maintain their living space They are fighting for the natural rights inherent in the environment It is a tool of exploitation that destroys the social and ecological balance that local communities have long maintained This exploitation not only destroys nature but also destroys the lives of those who depend on the land and sea that are now in danger of disappearing Wahyu Eka Styawan smuggling of songbirds "We received reports from two of our members in Banyuwangi and the number is indeed large," said Flight Indonesia Executive Director Marison Guciano when contacted Marison estimated that the number of songbirds that failed to be smuggled was eight to 10 thousand Banyuwangi has been the gateway for bird smuggling to be distributed in Java there are even more that get through," he said Marison said that wildlife smuggling practices are interrelated with the illegal capture process health certificates from the quarantine of origin," he said In addition to violating quarantine regulations songbirds are illegal because they are captured outside the procedures determined by the government Marison said that wildlife may actually be traded as long as they comply with the rules Provisions regarding this have been regulated through the Decree of the Minister of Forestry Number 447 concerning the Administration of the Taking or Capturing and Distribution of Wild Plants and Animals This regulation stipulates that animals taken in nature must meet a number of requirements Some of the requirements include obtaining permission from the relevant agency must comply with the capture quota and be taken in the capture area determined by the Conservation Center The capture of songbirds in nature is carried out massively and without supervision around 300 thousand songbirds were confiscated from illegal trade in Indonesia “When taken in large numbers and smuggled this is definitely illegal and violates regulations This means that the BKSDA where these songbirds come from has failed to carry out its duties,” said Marison Editor's Choice: Indonesia's Fisheries Ministry Explains 4 Lobster Seeds Smuggling Hotspots Click here to get the latest news updates from media to cover attractions in North Bali’s Buleleng Regency “We are optimistic that these measures will ease the concentration of visitors in the south and encourage sustainable tourism that benefits local communities,” Widiyanti added Deputy for Destination Development and Infrastructure said that the ministry is committed to sustainable tourism policies that safeguard Bali’s culture “We are working closely with local governments and communities to address issues like waste management and the social impact of tourism,” Hariyanto said He also underscored the importance of evenly distributing visitors across Bali and further developing Indonesia’s other priority destinations the ministry is enhancing regulations to tackle illegal activities and encourage cultural respect and environmental conservation “We are also educating travelers on the importance of preserving Bali’s natural and cultural heritage,” Hariyanto said Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) is one of the important diseases in animals especially cloven-hoofed animal with a high transmission rate FMDV is included in the list of infectious animal diseases with a 100% morbidity rate in animal populations with confirmed by FMDV and mortality in young animals reaching 20-30% while in adult animals reaching 1-5% % FMDV outbreaks are common in Southeast Asia First FMDV outbreak was found in Indonesia on April 28th 2022 with a total of 1,247 cases in East Java (Gresik Mojokerto) and 1,881 cases in Aceh Tamiang District This was stated in the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia concerning the determination of FMDV outbreak areas in several Regencies in East Java and Aceh Tamiang District FMDV outbreaks in Indonesia were included in cases of re-emerging disease where in 1884 Indonesia had experienced FMDV cases and in 1990 Indonesia was declared FMDV free FMDV is caused by a virus from the genus Apthovirus in the Picornaviridae family and have seven FMD serotypes (O and Asia1) in which the FMD-causing virus has a high degree of genetic and antigen diversity The 25-30 nm virus particle has an icosahedral capsid composed of proteins non-envelope with a genome of positive-sense single-stranded RNA encoding 4 structural proteins and non-structural proteins Structural proteins are composed of VP1-VP4 while non-structural proteins consist of 28 contains RGD (arginine-glycine-aspartic acid) peptide sequences that play a role in receptor binding Besides serving as a determinant of virus serotype classification the VP1 gene is also used to design primers for amplification and sequencing protocols for FMD virus detection In 2001 the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 lineage was first reported in India and thereafter spread across several countries such as North Africa The O/ME-SA/Ind-2001 lineage has been classified into sub-lineages a with O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e being found mostly in Southeast Asia FMDV O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e were circulated in Indonesian and the most common causative agent spread in Cambodia This study aims to detect FMD based on clinical symptoms from field cases in beef cattle using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method followed by sequencing The results of this study are expected to provide information and can be used in policy and control of FMD virus to overcome losses due to FMD disease Samples were collected from cattle diagnosed with FMD with clinical symptoms of fever and vesicles in the mouth and feet in August 2022 Samples were collected from vesicle swabs on lesions in the mouth and feet of beef cattle from smallholder farms in Banyuwangi Samples were collected with Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS) with 5% antibiotic transport medium Samples were stored at -80°C in the laboratory before analysis The extraction of viral RNA from the specimens using QIAmp Viral RNA mini kit according to the manufacturer’s instructions (Qiagen RNA was eluted with 60 µl of RNase- and DNase-free water and stored at -80°C before further analysis RT-PCR has performed for detecting and genotyping of FMDV using the one- step RT-PCR PCR (AMV) Takara Kit as previously described First detection of FMDV infection using universal primers and to determine serotype O in the VP1 gene using one pair of primers are showen in Table 1 The primers were synthesized by (Macrogen Co. Total 2.5 µl RNA sample eith 8 µl nucleas-free water and RNAse inhibitor 0.25 µl were put into a PCR tube with the final mixture was 15 µl and then inserted into a conventional PCR machine One-step RT-PCR cycle conditions were 30 minutes at 42⁰C followed by 5 minutes of 94⁰C inactivation then at cycle 35 with conditions of denaturation 94⁰C for 60 seconds RT-PCR products were stored in a refrigerator before electrophoresis RT-PCR tests on suspect samples were conducted to confirm FMD virus infection causing productivity decline in the livestock sector The universal primer set was used for first-time detection in cattle suspected of FMDV infection RT-PCR product amplification result according to the expected size (328bp) is considered as a positive result The results of this study are consistent with previous studies that RT-PCR was used to detect FMDV for primary diagnosis with a set of universal 1F/1R primers with an expected band of 328bp A pair of IF/IR-based RT-PCR universal primers can be used in rapid detection of FMD infected animals Same samples were detected using serotype O specific primers on the VP1 gene by RT-PCR The result showed the presence of DNA bands in the three samples The VP1 gene fragment was obtained with visualization of DNA bands with a length of 1165 bp RT-PCR is a highly sensitive and specific method that has been used to detect FMDV outbreaks or re-infections disease The difference between two RT-PCR results with the same sample suggests that the universal primer set more sensitive to detect FMD viral infection Universal primers encoding the untranslated region (UTR) more sensitive in detecting O The FMDV viral genome contains one open reading frame (ORF) that begins and ends with 5′ and 3′ untranslated regions (UTR) The genome of FMDV contains several functional elements including in the untranslated region (UTR) in the 5′ UTR the internal ribosome entry site (IRES) element initiates cap-independent translation while the 3′ UTR is for stimulating IRES activity The VP1 belonged to structural protein that serves as capsid protein on FMDV and primary antigen that elicits and neutralizes antibody responses VP1 gene as a determinant of virus serotype classification serotype-specific primer design and as a determinant of conserve regions in the GH Loop due to the presence of the amino acid RGD (arginine-glycine-aspartic acid) RT-PCR results show positivity in the VP1 gene less than the UTR The primer design used to detect FMDV serotype O in the VP1 gene is less sensitive it is necessary to design own primers from local isolates that have high accuracy Nucleotide and amino acid changes in the VP1 serotype O gene also affect the primers deletions and insertions causes sensitive primers Focus on sequencing the whole viral genome to reveal possible mutations at the GH Loop site of the serotype O-specific primers of the VP1 gene and then designing primers to target this site Indonesia experienced an FMD outbreak that spread throughout the region For 32 years Indonesia was free from FMD until finally in 2022 FMD outbreaks were again found in several regions in Indonesia Meat imports and illegal entry of animals are suspected to be one of the sources of FMD virus spread in Indonesia Foot and mouth disease is of great importance to livestock breeding due to the rapid spread of the virus It should be recognized and diagnosed as soon as possible for outbreak control and management Rapid and accurate detection of FMDV is necessary for effective outbreak control in planning and country preparedness in the face of outbreaks we investigated cattle suspected of FMDV infection using one step RT-PCR method These findings indicate the importance of surveillance studies and genetic analysis to monitor FMD virus to evaluate the emergence of genetic variation in Indonesia Future studies related to genetic analysis of FMD viruses from field isolates in Indonesia are needed Monitoring of FMD outbreaks and the spread of O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e in Indonesia should be conducted to evaluate the national spread and establish efficient control strategies it can be concluded that the RT-PCR technique can accurately detect FMD virus infection in cattle on smallholder farms in Banyuwangi This study found that universal primers in the UTR region showed more sensitive results compared to serotype O specific primers of VP1 gene The RT-PCR protocol can be used to handle samples in a single assay and can be a valuable tool to complement routine diagnosis of FMD viruses from field outbreaks and prevention strategies Bupati Banyuwangi Ipuk Fiestiandani hadiri peluncuran layanan kereta api Blambangan Ekspress Universitas Airlangga Official Website UNAIR NEWS – Betta fish is one of the most popular fishery commodities among various communities and countries because betta fish has a high economic value and can provide many benefits One of the causes is a disease factor that first by using methylene blue or acriflavine it must be separated from the healthy fish immediately,” he explained The symptoms include a dark or sometimes reddish color The affected fins gradually wear out like falling out/torn Even though the fish are still actively moving with a good appetite it will spread to the body of the fish,” he said a white spot or ich is caused by a parasite of the Protozoa (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) are white spots appearing on the body of the fish “Fish often move fast and hit the wall of the aquarium like trying to scratch their body,” he said pop-eye or swollen fish’s eyes are caused by bacteria The symptom shows that the fish’s eyes start to swell It starts from one eye in the early stages but then attacks both of the fish’s eyes has symptoms such as swelling in the stomach and inability to excrete feces The early stages are similar to constipation the stomach will swell and becomes reddish The scales start to wear off from the stomach to the Pangpang Bay in Banyuwangi on the island of Java the powerful work that mangroves do can easily be seen locals’ nets brim with fish – a testament to nature’s gift to people recounts the history of these vital ecosystems – from periods of degradation to inspiring accounts of conservation describes how the catch from these waters is not just food but a celebration of life on their family table This story extends beyond the local community highlighting a little known fact about mangroves Often recognized for their role in climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation these forests are also crucial for food security and nutrition Indonesia is home to nearly a quarter of the world’s mangroves but these have undergone deforestation and degradation The impacts of these challenges on local food security has been largely invisible: mangroves are nurturing grounds for a plethora of aquatic life with many creatures serving as vital links in the food chain – and as key sources of diverse micronutrients for local residents Under the Restoring Coastal Landscapes for Adaptation and Integrated Mitigation (ReCLAIM) project – supported by the Lucille-Packard Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with Brawijaya University and the Blue Forest Foundation – the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) embarked on a study on the hidden benefits of mangroves It explored mangroves’ impacts on the livelihoods and nutrition of the Banyuwangi and Demak communities in Java The findings reveal the significant contribution of mangrove-sourced aquatic life to the well-being of these communities In parallel, CIFOR-ICRAF researchers and their partners have provided scientific evidence on the tangible benefits of mangroves to food security and nutrition in Indonesia Through the creation of a dataset that combined fish consumption data from coastal households all over the Indonesian archipelago with spatial data on mangroves and aquaculture location and extent the scientists discovered an interesting pattern: coastal households near dense mangroves enjoyed a significantly higher consumption of fresh fish and other aquatic animals than coastal households that did not live near mangroves encompassing thousands of villages and over 100,000 households underscores the vital role of mangroves not just in environmental stewardship but as a cornerstone of community nutrition and health Enriched by scientific evidence from CIFOR-ICRAF and its partners this story underscores the need for conservation and restoration of mangroves – not just as an environmental imperative but also as a means to secure nutritious food for local communities It’s a great example of a ‘nature based solution’ to human food security and a reminder of the delicate balance we must maintain for the health and wellbeing of future generations The Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) harnesses the power of trees forests and agroforestry landscapes to address the most pressing global challenges of our time – biodiversity loss UNAIR NEWS – The increasing prevalence of viral diseases is one of the impacts of the intensification of aquaculture sector which increases the production of waste into the environment The use of microalgae as immunostimulants is one of the effective methods to treat viral diseases microalgae also have broad benefits in fisheries Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) PSDKU Aquaculture Program in Banyuwangi held a guest lecture to discuss the use of microalgae to combat virus attacks on fish and shrimp farming last Monday The virtual lecture through Zoom platform presented Dr a lecturer of Aquaculture in Ibrahimy University who is also researcher in the field of microalgae He revealed that the use of microalgae is considered effective in overcoming viral diseases with fast-spreading and high mortality rates because microalgae contain various active ingredients that can function as antiviral “Due to high cost of vaccinations and antiviral drugs microalgae which have pigment fragments such as astaxanthin phycocyanin and omega fatty acids such as ALA functioning as antiviral and immunostimulants are potential to be utilized,” explained Khumaidi pigment fragments from microalgae species of Nannochlropsis oculata can increase the survival rate (SR) of groupers that are attacked by Viral Necrosis Virus(VNN) because it triggers the production of β-actin in fish “Pigment fragments from these species can stimulate the production of β-actin which functions as a guardian of cell structure and increases the immune response in eliminating RNA (VNN) viruses,” he said Khumaidi revealed some of the fatty acid content of the microalgae Amphora sp can also be an antiviral agent to tackle viral diseases in cultivation Grouper fish that were attacked by VNN showed a positive histoimmunological response and the SR could reach 83% “Fatty acids such as arachidonic acid and palmitoleic acid and amino acids such as Valine and L-Norleucine in Amphora sp there are still many extracts of other microalgae species that can be applied to control viral cultivation diseases,” he said microalgae have many benefits for Aquaculture But the challenge now is how we standardize it so we can produce and apply microalgae and their substances appropriately “To answer these challenges our role as academics is very necessary in order to know the accuracy of dosage usage and production methods so we can get the same quality throughout Indonesia,” he concluded
