Batam (gokepri) – Indonesia is making a calculated push to elevate Batam’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs) as a competitive alternative to Johor-Singapore
The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs has prioritised resolving long-standing land acquisition issues
aiming to position Batam as a prime investment destination
Batam must rise to the occasion,” he said during a meeting at the Indonesian Parliament on December 3rd
Its location near vital shipping routes makes it geographically strategic—arguably more so than Johor
these benefits are undermined by infrastructure deficits and bureaucratic hurdles that have historically hampered its potential
Recent government efforts aim to change that narrative
The ministry has rolled out an array of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to lure investors
Investors in tourism-focused zones are offered even greater perks
while non-fiscal measures promise streamlined licensing and extended land ownership rights
Batam must contend with the stark reality of its regional competitors
and connectivity that Batam has yet to replicate
Rising tensions between the United States and China have triggered a search among multinationals for alternative production hubs
with its growing consumer market and relatively stable political landscape
“Geopolitical shifts could be a blessing for us,” Susiwijono remarked
referring to past examples where companies relocated to Indonesia amid global trade disruptions
Batam’s success will ultimately hinge on execution
Infrastructure development must keep pace with investor expectations
and reforms must address the red tape that has long plagued the region
Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Riau Islands (Kepri)
has raised concerns about the competitive risks posed by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ)
a joint project developed by Malaysia and Singapore
the policy incentives offered by JS-SEZ are attractive to businesses
particularly the 5% income tax rate for 20 years and a 10% incentive for Industrial Building Allowance
“The 5% income tax is a stark contrast to Indonesia’s rate
where corporate income tax can reach up to 21%,” he said in Batam on Thursday
could undermine the investment climate in Indonesia
as both Batam and JS-SEZ are targeting foreign investors and are strategically located in the Malacca Strait
JS-SEZ has the added advantage of more available land

Chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) Batam
stressing the need for the central government to support Batam’s Special Economic Zones (KEK) and Free Trade Zones (FTZ)
“Licensing authority should be transferred to FTZ managers and local governments
Rasyid also acknowledged the growing challenge posed by the development of KEK in Johor
given Singapore’s significant investment footprint in Batam
Batam’s investments will dwindle,” he explained
Rasyid further called for improvements in infrastructure
including better roads and port facilities
particularly smaller roads leading to industrial zones
as well as more efficient logistics tariffs
Batam could compete with Johor and other regional SEZs,” he added
A long-anticipated agreement between Malaysia and Singapore to develop a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Johor
is now expected to be signed in December 2024
This new zone is poised to become a key alternative to Indonesia’s Special Economic Zones (KEK)
which have long attracted Singaporean investors
confirmed the delay during a conference in Singapore on August 29
attributing it to high-level discussions between the two countries
Hafiz remains optimistic that the agreement will be finalized soon
with the details being ironed out by officials from both nations
the agreement will be signed in November,” said Hafiz
emphasizing that both sides are working to ensure the project proceeds on schedule
Malaysia and Singapore had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in January 2024 to develop the SEZ
The initiative aims to facilitate the free movement of goods and people between resource-rich Johor and land-scarce Singapore
the Johor-Singapore SEZ is seen as a major catalyst for both countries’ economies
It is expected to create around 100,000 new jobs in Johor and boost Malaysia’s economy by USD 26 billion annually by 2030

“Kemarin ketika ditangkap, semuanya heboh. Sekarang ketika dilepas kita tidak tahu. Jadi kami menyayangkan sikap KKP melepaskan dua kapal itu secara diam-diam,” kata Hariyanto
Ketua DPD Ketua Kesatuan Nelayan Tradisional Indonesia (KNTI) Bintan

“Kemarin saya nangkap loh tak sengaja (dua kapal pasir laut)
kenapa sekarang pelepasan diam-diam,” tanyanya

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The joint team of Batam Customs foiled the smuggling of 10,955 grams of crystal meth. The drugs were seized from two different locations
namely Hang Nadim International Airport and a hotel in the Jodoh area
said that their first enforcement was carried out against a couple with the initials RD
Customs and AVSEC officers identified four suspicious packages in each of their suitcases
the officers then looked for the owners of the suitcases and found the two passengers sitting side by side and embracing," Zaky said in an official statement quoted on Friday
He explained that initially the suitcase owners appeared anxious and avoided interaction with the officers
the officers checked the contents of the couple's suitcases who claimed they were going on vacation
four transparent plastic packages containing white crystal powder were found in each suitcase
tucked into the folds of their jeans," Zaky explained
the evidence seized included eight packages of crystal meth
The illicit items were planned to be taken to their final destination in Kendari using Citilink Airlines with the Batam-Jakarta-Makassar-Kendari route
"According to the statements from both perpetrators
the items were obtained from a controller with the initials AWI
who was staying at a hotel in the Jodoh area
AM admitted to being a courier after being invited by her friend SASA
She had previously smuggled crystal meth to Kendari and received a net reward of Rp40 million
RD admitted to being a courier for the first time after being persuaded by his girlfriend
and SASA were instructed by AWI to travel from Pekanbaru to Batam
SASA instructed RD and AM to buy suitcases in Nagoya and second-hand clothing at Pasar Jodoh to fill the suitcases
The suitcases were then handed over to AWI to be filled with packages to be brought along
SASA provided cash to RD and AM to separately purchase tickets and for operational needs
RD and AM together departed to Hang Nadim Airport using an online taxi
the Head of Enforcement and Investigation Division of Batam Customs
formed a joint team and deployed the K-9 Unit of Batam Customs to pursue AWI and his network
The team eventually apprehended two men identified as AWI
The team searched five rooms used by the network
One of the rooms was used as a place to package the crystal meth
while the other four served as courier and controller rooms
the team found evidence of white crystal powder in the packaging
there were other items used to package the crystal meth
and 1 set of crystal meth inhalation tools or a bong
The powder was packed in detailed packaging
1 bag of 'Guanyinwang' Chinese tea weighing 1,045 grams
1 ziplock bag of 100 grams in a cigarette wrapper
and 1 ziplock bag of 10 grams in AWI's wallet
"The total evidence of white crystal powder suspected to be methamphetamine amounts to 8,715 grams," Muhtadi said
authorities also arrested nine other individuals suspected of involvement in the network
They are AWI as the main controller of the syndicate
The results of the narcotic test and laboratory tests on the evidence samples indicated that they positively contained Class I narcotic compound of Methamphetamine
Officers also conducted urine tests on the 11 individuals who were apprehended
and three of them tested positive for drug use
AWI had distributed the drugs four times based on RO's orders
He took the items from the areas around the beach in Tanjung Balai Karimun
which were brought by three individuals using a speed boat
AWI then brought the items to the hotel to be refined and packaged
AWI and OKI recruited family members and close friends as drug couriers
The couriers were promised rewards of up to Rp50 million per trip
while AWI carefully organized the entire process
including booking several hotel rooms and the delivery process of the items at the destination location
The Drug Unit of Barelang Police Resort has named four suspects
and NAWI are still being pursued or listed as wanted persons (DPO)
The suspects are charged under the Narcotics Law Number 35 of 2009
with a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment

The Batam factory is slated to specialize in the production of AirTags
Apple's tracking devices designed to assist users in locating lost items
Rosan hoped that this new facility could create job opportunities in Indonesia
Rosan mentioned that Apple's initial investment of Rp16.14 trillion represents merely the first phase of a broader commitment
“This is the initial phase as we have engaged in discussions to attract other vendors as well,” he explained
Minister Rosan conveyed this information following a meeting with Apple officials at the Investment Ministry Office
we concluded the meeting with a handshake and a photograph,” he remarked
Apple had initially planned to invest US$100 million or approximately Rp1.61 trillion in Indonesia
This initial investment was intended to fulfill the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements mandated by the Indonesian government to enable the distribution of the iPhone 16 within the domestic market
the government subsequently encouraged Apple to increase its investment commitment to the current US$1 billion or equivalent to Rp16.14 trillion

TEMPO.CO, Batam - Business players in Batam City have complained about the recent increase in gas prices. As a result, electricity prices in industrial estates have also increased
They are worried that this condition will make investors reluctant to come to Batam City amid economic competition among countries following the launch of the Johor Special Economic Zone
BatamIndo Industrial Estate entrepreneur Mook Soi Wah said his industrial estate has its own power plants that use gas as fuel
the electricity price in the area also increases
right," Mook told reporters while attending the Singapore Consulate General's event at the Oakwood Hotel Batam on Wednesday
the impact of the increase in gas prices is that electricity will increase by 40 to 50 percent
He said that state gas company PGN has informed the businesses about the price increase
He also asked the government to pay attention so that gas prices are not increased which will affect electricity in industrial areas
"The problem is that natural gas from Sumatra and Natuna is sent to Singapore
automatically the price of electricity becomes expensive
so we have asked that natural gas be used for domestic electricity first
the price of electricity is cheaper and the industrial area is competitive with other countries," said the deputy chairman of the Sumatra regional coordinator of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin)
Mook said that the price of electricity in the industrial area of Batam City is the most expensive compared to other Southeast Asian countries
He asked PGN to reconsider the gas price hike
"I have also told the Deputy Minister of Industry who came to Batam some time ago
but this is the authority of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources
hopefully it will get attention," Mook said
Mook said Singapore and Malaysia have currently formed a SEZ cooperation in the Johor area
I am afraid it will be more difficult for us to attract investment to Batam
The SEZ will accommodate investors who use their hands
not increase it (gas and electricity prices)," he said
Batam entrepreneurs are expanding in China
He hopes that the increase in gas prices will not cause neighboring countries to expand companies that have grown in Batam
the companies will not immediately move to other countries
but the scale can be reduced by investors later
many industrial estates are operating in the electronics sector
there is an attraction of investors in the data center sector
All of these sectors consume a lot of electricity."Data centers are being fought over in Southeast Asia
investors will look for the cheap one," he said
Mook added that Batam City's industrial economy is getting better every year
but it shouldn't be difficult for investors to come to Batam," he said

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The official port in Batam has become a nest for smuggling Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in a non-procedural manner
Only a few workers are smuggled through the back route or rat ports
It was revealed after the latest case involving BP Batam port employees who played a role in illegally introducing migrant workers into ships to work abroad
the police have not yet received information on the number of migrant workers successfully smuggled by the perpetrators each day at the Batam Center International Port
According to the Head of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Office (BP3MI) Kepri
the majority of this non-procedural PMI smuggling is carried out through official ports
one of which is the Batam Center International Port
BP3MI recorded 2885 non-procedural PMIs departing to Malaysia to work illegally through official ports
only 155 people pass through the back route or rat ports
"So from all our data taken from the migrant workers we facilitated (returning)
received from friends at the KJRI (Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia)
those who took the official route in 2285 people
compared to only 155 people taking the back route," Imam told Tempo
after a press conference on the disclosure of the case involving BP Batam employees in the smuggling of non-procedural PMIs at the Riau Islands Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday (19/11/2024)
Imam stated that all these non-procedural PMIs are departing for work via official channels
including the Batam Center International Port
(non-procedural PMIs) leaving the Batam Center International Port are 896 people in 2024
which is the highest at official ports," he said
Humanitarian activist Father Paschalis admitted that he was not surprised by the phenomenon
the smuggling of non-procedural PMIs has been busier through the front door or official ports in Batam
these workers (migrants) have been brought through the front door (official ports)
I'm just surprised why the back route is being framed
even the level of the National Police Headquarters only catches the back route," said Father when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday (3/12/2024)
Father asked not to deceive the public anymore
saying that smuggling is through the back door
it's through the front door (official ports)," he said
who is also the Chairman of the Commission for Peace and Migrant Pastoral Justice (KKPPMP) of the Pangkalpinang Diocese
asserted that this non-procedural PMI smuggling is not new
"The games have been going on for a long time
He also regretted why the police only released the BP Batam employee smuggling perpetrators
they are small players in the PMI smuggling network in Batam
"Why didn't they release those caught by the Water Police
The issue of Trafficking in Persons (TPPO) has become a classic problem in Batam
He added that it is now up to the government or law enforcement whether or not to arrest the major mafia involved in smuggling migrant workers
we have a little hope in the new government
President Prabowo must appoint people with perspectives on human trafficking
and key positions at the Regional Police must strengthen with people who truly have credibility
we will just repeat the same mistakes," he said

TEMPO.CO, Batam - The Riau Islands Provincial Government and Batam-Singapore ferry operators have agreed to lower ferry ticket prices by Rp30,000 for a round trip
Head of the Riau Islands Transportation Agency
announced the decision following a meeting between the government and ferry operators on September 22-23
“The round-trip ticket fare is reduced by Rp30,000 starting today,” he stated on Tuesday
He explained that the decision to reduce ticket prices by Rp30,000 was based on the operator's calculations. However, he noted that this is just the first phase of a broader review to determine the optimal pricing for Batam-Singapore ferry tickets
a survey will be conducted to identify the causes of the high ticket prices to determine the appropriate pricing for Batam-Singapore ferry tickets,” Junaidi added
ferry operators cited factors such as the rising exchange rate
and higher crew salaries as contributing to the high ticket prices.
Junaidi acknowledged their concerns but emphasized the need for a comprehensive survey to substantiate these claims
He also complained about the unfinalized visa on arrival (VoA) regulations for foreign tourists
He noted that the flexibility of these regulations would significantly impact the number of ferry passengers
Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad planned to form an investigation team following the surge in Batam-Singapore ferry ticket prices
round-trip ticket prices have risen from around Rp480,000 to Rp760,000
This has been complained about by many,” he said in a press release on Sunday
Governor Ansar believed that reducing the ticket prices of the Batam-Singapore ferry would increase the ship's occupancy rates, thereby raising the number of foreign tourists visiting the Riau Islands

Oracle is considering expanding to an Indonesian island that already hosts several other data centres at Nongsa Digital Park
US-based cloud applications and platform multinational Oracle is considering creating a cloud services centre in Indonesia and is in discussions with the government
people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg News
The potential investment would occur in Batam
an island to the north of Indonesia and the south coast of Singapore
Batam already houses several other data centres in Nongsa Digital Park
which its website describes as “an ideal site for digital businesses to grow” and “data centre development.” It says its location
far away from seismic fault lines and on the high topography of Eastern Batam
makes it a “much safer geographical location for data centres.”
It also has access to 13 international submarine fiber optic cables
Access to the these submarine cables enables faster data transfer from the data centres to the internet infrastructure
Oracle is just one of many major tech companies building essential infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence in Southeast Asia
and relative political stability has allowed the region to attract record-breaking foreign direct investment (FDI) levels while flows decrease in most other parts of the world
Oracle announced plans to invest $6.5bn in Malaysia to build a cloud region
It was the ninth-biggest FDI deal that year
The company also already has two cloud computing centres in Malaysia
The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimates that FDI flows into countries within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) increased by 2%
reaching a record estimated $235bn in 2024

Oracle is in talks with the Indonesian Government to set up a cloud services centre on Batam Island
according to people familiar with the discussions
The move reflects Oracle’s effort to expand its data centre presence in Southeast Asia
According to Bloomberg
the company is apparently looking into Nongsa Digital Park in Batam as a potential site
and existing data centre infrastructure make it an attractive option
Batam also has access to 13 international submarine fibre optic cables
The discussions are still ongoing and could change depending on various factors
Neither Oracle nor Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs responded to requests for comment
Nongsa Digital Park has become a hub for data infrastructure due to its strategic location and well-developed connectivity
The park promotes its reliable power supply
and stable seismic conditions as advantages for data centre operations
Real estate private equity firm Gaw Capital Partners recently opened a data centre there
further strengthening the site’s appeal for cloud services
Oracle already operates two cloud computing centres in Singapore and last year announced plans to invest $6.5 billion in a similar facility in Malaysia
Expanding into Batam would give Oracle a presence in a key region for cloud and AI-related services while benefiting from Indonesia’s growing digital economy
the market for AI-related products could reach $990 billion by 2027
as AI adoption reshapes industries and business operations around the world
This growing demand is prompting tech companies to establish dependable cloud infrastructure in strategically located markets such as Southeast Asia
Oracle’s expansion into Batam would position it to capitalise on the region’s increasing need for AI and cloud computing capacity
The proposed centre could help Oracle boost its position in Southeast Asia’s competitive cloud services market
where established companies such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud are already active
Southeast Asia has become a focal point for cloud and AI infrastructure
Oracle’s entrance into Batam would diversify its footprint and give it a strategic advantage by providing services in a growing market with improving digital infrastructure
While details of the potential agreement remain uncertain
the move highlights the growing importance of Southeast Asia as a centre for cloud and AI development

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fishers in the coastal city of Batam lodged a complaint against the Ocarina reclamation project
which damaged the sea where they hinged their livelihood
They filed the complaint to the Riau Islands regional police after efforts to gain government support went unanswered.
said they filed the report about two weeks ago
who is also the head of the Bengkong Kolam neighborhood unit
said residents have reported the damages to the central government back in 2019
“There has been no response at all," Romi told Tempo on Wednesday
The reclamation project off Ocarina Beach has been underway since 2002
and continues to harm the environment off the Batam Island coasts and even clog the river.
we requested a hearing with the Batam City DPRD (Regional Representative Council)
I’m disappointed with the local government," he said
heads of the local neighborhood units also file a complaint against the reclamation project
citing frequent flooding in the area due to obstructed river flows
"Floods could reach chest level during the rainy season,” said the head of a neighborhood unit at Nayon sub-district
"The company must take responsibility for resident reports on the narrowing of rivers
and reports on environmental damage due to the reclamation project by fishers,” said Romi
When Tempo contacted the Head of Public Relations at the Riau Islands Regional Police
he asked for the confirmation to be directed to the office’s public information head

setelah wilayah setempat diguyur hujan lebat selama beberapa hari

Pasalnya selain membahayakan masyarakat sekitar

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Batam Customs Main Office has revealed the case of the misuse of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration through a practice known as "jockeying"
Head of Compliance Guidance and Information Services Section of Batam Customs
confirmed that 42 mobile phone units were seized during the operation
"This modus is used to avoid payment of import duties and taxes as part of the import duty on goods entering Indonesia which should be imposed on mobile devices," Evi said in a written statement quoted from Antara
The operation took place at two different locations. The first bust occurred on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Arrival Terminal of the International Ferry Harbour Bay, targeting passengers arriving from Singapore and Malaysia. Officials seized 20 iPhones carried by 10 IMEI jockeys
The following day, Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Batam Customs apprehended two IMEI jockeys and two controllers at the Arrival Terminal of the International Ferry Batam Centre. They also seized 20 iPhones
"These controllers play a role in coordinating the activities (of jockeying IMEI)," Evi explained
These IMEI jockeys were recruited through social media groups with promises of free trips abroad
Some were even recruited directly while overseas before traveling to Batam
they were promised a certain amount of cash after successfully completing the IMEI registration process," she said
Evi did not disclose the specific amount of money offered to the jockeys
the jockeys received phones from the controllers and registered the IMEIs using their personal data
making the devices appear as personal belongings brought from abroad
these phones are actually commodity items deliberately entrusted by the seller through the controllers to avoid customs regulations," Evi stated
the phones were returned to the controllers for distribution to the sellers
Batam Customs issued a Proof of Enforcement Letter and designated all seized phones as State Controlled Items (BCN)
They also recommended that the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) block the devices registered by the jockeys
Evi emphasized that this operation demonstrates Batam Customs' commitment to enforcing regulations and preventing customs violations and personal data misuse
"Customs will continue to improve supervision and take firm steps to ensure legal compliance and protect national interests," she concluded

China Reportedly Hinders Apple's iPhone Production in India
Apple Set to Unveil Dozens of New Products Before 2026
Here's How Apple is Trying to Shift iPhone Production from China to India
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has clarified that Apple's plans to establish a factory in Batam, Riau Islands, will not automatically grant the company permission to sell the iPhone 16 in Indonesia
This is because the factory will solely focus on the production of AirTags
which are considered accessories and do not qualify as core components for the calculation of Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements for HKT products that include cellphones
“Airtag is an accessory that does not constitute an essential component of HKT
so they cannot be counted as TKDN for HKT products,” Agus said in a written statement received by Tempo on Thursday
He emphasized that the investment of the AirTag factory does not fulfill the criteria outlined in the Industry Ministerial Regulation Number 29 of 2017
which mandates that only investments directly related to HKT production can be considered for TKDN certification
“If Apple wants to release the iPhone 16 in Indonesia
it must adhere to the three schemes outlined in the Industry Ministerial Regulation Number 29 of 2017,” the minister explained
During negotiations with the Ministry of Industry
Apple representatives presented an investment proposal for the 2023-2026 period
which it had also chosen for the 2020-2023 period
the proposed investment figure fell short of the Indonesian Government's expectations
“The Ministry of Industry has submitted a counter-proposal
outlining an investment figure calculated based on a thorough and technocratic assessment
This proposal is currently under internal review by Apple,” Minister Agus stated
The counter-proposal from the Ministry of Industry includes several criteria for determining the appropriate investment value
These criteria include a comparative analysis of Apple's investments in other countries
ensuring fair investment practices among HKT producers operating within Indonesia
and maximizing added value and state revenue
the Ministry of Industry considered the potential for job creation within the industrial ecosystem
Apple's significant sales figures in Indonesia that reached Rp56 trillion in 2023-2024
and the potential for administrative sanctions as outlined in Minister of Industry Regulation Number 29 of 2017
Apple has also committed to settling a US$10 million debt
with a third party appointed by the Ministry of Industry tasked with assessing the settlement documentation
Minister Agus emphasized that the Ministry has grounds to impose sanctions on Apple for its non-compliance with the commitment outlined in the third scheme
The Minister pointed out that Apple's implementation of the innovation scheme has fallen short of expectations
While the company has conducted education and training programs
research and development (R&D) activities in the ICT sector within Indonesia have been deemed suboptimal
the Ministry of Industry encouraged Apple to establish R&D facilities within Indonesia,” Minister Agus concluded

“Coba kali PNBP (pendapatan negara bukan pajak) kalau dibawa keluar (ekspor)
dikali harga 1 meter kubik pasir laut sekarang yaitu Rp186.000

asking BP Batam and the Governor of the Riau Islands to directly inspect the impact and social problems that occur on Rempang Island and write to the relevant ministries to discuss the licensing of PT MEG
which committed human rights violations and violence against communities affected by the Rempang Eco City PSN
BP Batam and the Governor of the Riau Islands are responsible for ensuring orderly agrarian administration by PT MEG

Indonesia — Stress levels among the population of Batam reportedly spiked in January after extreme rainfall over a saltwater crocodile farm allowed more than 100 captive predators to explore the local area for the first time
“There were a few things that we have passed along
such as that the company should take responsibility,” said Tommy Sinambela
an official with the state conservation agency
Meteorological data showed a powerful localized storm formed over Singkep Island Jan
which then moved northward over Batam on Jan
peaking at more than 100 millimeters (3.9 inches]
Local officials said the rainfall damaged the perimeter of a crocodile farm located on Bulan Island
across a narrow strait from densely populated Batam
is both an important manufacturing hub and tourism destination accounting for around 2 million visits to Indonesia per year
Elected representatives in Batam have since called for the farm operated by PT Perkasa Jagat Karunia to be closed and provide compensation after panicked local fishers worked to recapture escapees for free
there haven’t been any criminal penalties imposed on the company because there haven’t been any fatalities,” said Bulang subdistrict’s chief of police
snake and lizard skins emerged at the beginning of the 20th century in Java and parts of South America
The trade then became more established in the 1920s
and millions of reptiles around the world were hunted for skin
Adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in 1975 enacted restrictions for the first time to curb killings of subspecies pushed to the brink of extinction
the licensed trade in saltwater crocodile skin is estimated to be worth around $75 million annually
Market research firms have determined the global industry could be worth more than $1 billion owing to the premium paid by retail customers
The fashion industry prizes saltwater crocodiles for their intricately patterned skin
Farmers typically house individual crocodiles in narrow pens to prevent them from moving
which risks damaging the precious skin pattern
Behavioral research has sought to determine the extent to which reptiles can experience feelings like despair and frustration
saltwater crocodiles often travel several miles daily and live to the age of around 70
In 2021, the Australian charity Farm Transparency Project obtained video footage of crocodiles kept in narrow concrete pens at four crocodile farms in Australia’s Northern Territory state
The animals at the farms are kept isolated and unable to move
partially beheaded and a piece of metal is inserted into the open nape to scramble their brains
Video footage obtained by the group showed young crocodiles writhing long after the culmination of this procedure
Multiple farms in the state were established by French accessories brand Hermès
supplier of bags costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to celebrated humanitarians like Imelda Marcos and Rosmah Mansor
military and police teams aided by volunteer Bulan Island fishers had recaptured around 38 estuarine crocodiles from various waterways
Provincial parliament speaker Imam Setiawan said the farm was claiming to have recaptured 66 more of the crocodiles, but, “Frankly speaking, we don’t believe it,” he said, as quoted by local media
“We want the company to keep searching for the remaining crocodiles and to verify the total number of escaped and captured reptiles.”
Many local people reported anger toward PT Perkasa Jagat Karunia owing to disruption to the rabbitfish season
which local fishers rely on to support their families
“Just being active on the coast of the island has been a worry,” said Muhammad Sapet
who leads an association of local fishers on Buluh Island
“Who can control our children — what if there are victims?”
Early comments by officials indicated government viewed the escape as an accident
“The fence had three layers — zinc fences and concrete walls,” the conservation agency’s Tommy said
“Captivity is like this everywhere; they’ve met the standards
Tommy added that the company should be liable to compensate local fishers for lost income
Risks of unusual weather-related incidents
such as the mass escape of more than 100 predators into human settlements
Singapore’s National Climate Change Secretariat
which reports to the country’s prime minister
notes that “annual rainfall total for Singapore has been gradually increasing at a rate of 83 millimeters [3.3 inches] per decade from 1980 to 2022.”
“It’s the rabbitfish season now and their price is increasing,” said Aweng Kurniawan
“Fishers can’t go to sea and earn a living
support their children and wives — it’s fortunate there haven’t been any victims.”
Tommy said he could not comment on the future of the crocodile farm
“The permission is from the minister,” he said via text message

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A plane passenger at Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam City dared to smuggle hundreds of iPhone units into Jakarta
The perpetrator's actions were discovered by Batam Customs on Sunday
This case was only revealed by Batam Customs through a press release on Monday
Zaky Firmansyah said that the disclosure of the case began with information that there was an attempt to smuggle goods suspected of being cellphones with the mechanism of the goods being carried directly by the passenger
"The goods were brought through Hang Nadim International Airport
to Soekarno Hatta Airport," said Zaky in the written statement
Customs officers then conducted an investigation and found a prospective passenger on a Super Air Jet plane with flight code IU 859 with the initials YT who was about to bring the iPhone brand cellphone
"The Hang Nadim Customs Team identified a suspicious passenger suspected to be YT
carrying an empty suitcase with a backpack
then the alleged perpetrator headed to an unnamed souvenir shop in the A8 waiting room
Officers immediately conducted an inspection of the passenger carrying the suitcase
hundreds of iPhone brand cellphones were found," added Zaky
action was taken in the form of preventing and sealing the suitcase being carried
and we also advise the public to always comply with the provisions regarding passenger baggage," he said
Zaky emphasized that Batam Customs will take strict action against all forms of customs violations committed by prospective passengers
"For the public who find any suspicion/indication of violations of customs provisions
please submit the information to us so that the truth of the information can be followed up," said Zaky
The suspect is suspected of violating Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 17 of 2006 concerning Amendments to Law Number 10 of 1995 concerning Customs Article 102 letter f and violating Government Regulation Number 41 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Free Trade Zones and Free Ports

particularly regarding the limited number of residents rejecting the national strategic project (PSN)
This frustration manifested in a public demonstration on Wednesday afternoon
Hundreds of Malay residents gathered to voice their opposition
displaying banners that read "Reject PSN Rempang Eco-City."
“These are merely representatives from each village
not the entire community,” emphasized one resident
The residents issued a formal rebuttal to BP Batam's statements. “One, we, the people of Rempang Island
still and will continue to reject the development of the Rempang Eco-City
along with any form of relocation or displacement
we affirm that BP Batam's data grossly misrepresents the actual conditions within the five villages designated for the first phase of the project
we demand that BP Batam publicly disclose the precise data regarding the number of residents who have consented to relocation
we implore the Indonesian public to offer their prayers
and solidarity in our struggle to safeguard the sea
and the ancestral villages that have been entrusted to our care
and to reject the Rempang Eco-City development.”
Residents Emphasize Majority of Rempang Residents Persist in Opposition
the residents' rights have been duly acknowledged and are even enshrined in a Presidential Decree
Disagreements indeed persist on the ground
but the population opposing this project is a very small minority,” Sudirman Saad
Head of the Region and Investment Division
residents refute these claims as "hurtful and deceptive"
perceiving them as attempts to intimidate the community
“Several statements made by BP Batam during the esteemed forum of the DPR hearing with Commission VI are public lies,” asserted the United Rempang Community Alliance (AMAR-GB) in a press release
further emphasized the discrepancy between BP Batam's data and the reality on the ground
“We have collected and analyzed comparative data
based on the data we gathered from the first phase of five villages
and the disparities are too far,” Ishak told the media after holding the protest
He explained that based on calculations conducted by village officials and manual counts performed by residents
the total number of households affected in the first phase of development across the five villages is approximately 700
only 162 households have been relocated and received relocation assistance.
“518 households have yet to be relocated
far from BP Batam's claim that 433 households have consented to relocation,” Ishak clarified
He challenged BP Batam to compare data and publicly disclose the detailed data on the number of residents who have agreed to relocation
“We are hurt and disappointed by statements that portray us as a marginalized minority opposing the project,” he lamented
Rempang Residents Request to be Invited to DPR
Ishak, on behalf of the Rempang residents, expressed hope that the DPR would conduct on-site investigations or invite community representatives to their offices
is eager to present the factual realities on the ground
“Because the DPR is the people's representative
we urge them to conduct on-site visits or invite our representatives to their offices to clarify BP Batam’s data
We hope that the DPR will truly uphold its mandate as the people's representatives while recognizing that BP Batam is merely a partner,” Ishak concluded

Jakarta. The Commission VI of the House of Representatives has approved the 2025 budget plans for BP Batam
The House had given its nod that BP Batam would get to spend up to around Rp 1.99 trillion (approximately $129.3 million) for the year 2025.

pure rupiah companion to foreign loans (0.29 percent)
About 45.59 percent of the spending will go into management support programs
including operational activities such as employee management
Some 54.51 percent of the money will go to supporting the development of strategic areas
This includes facilitating the licensing for investors
as well as priority programs such as the establishment of facilities meant to meet the region’s infrastructure needs
BP Batam will also use the money to develop a number of services
They will also set aside a portion of the money to attract investors and support the national strategic project of the Rempang Eco-City by building housing and settlements
“We will focus on making the Batam-Rempang-Galang area a more modern economic zone that can compete [with others],” Rudi was quoted as saying in a press statement
Batam also seeks to boost investments through regional and infrastructure development
This aligns with the government’s plans of expediting inclusive and sustainable economic growth next year
BP Batam will also give its support to the government in carrying on the domestic processing policies
The agency will also help the government in developing resource-based industries to bring added value for the country

Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani announced Tuesday that Apple planned to set up a factory that would support the production of its tracking device AirTag in Batam
This project is set for completion by early next year
The California-based tech giant has sent its vice president for global government affairs Nick Ammann to engage in some talks with Indonesian ministers -- all in hopes of nudging Jakarta into lifting the sales ban on the iPhone 16
Indonesia will only allow Apple to legally sell the coveted iPhone 16 in its market if the company meets the local content requirement
Southeast Asia’s largest economy mandates Apple to have at least 35 percent of its product components to be domestically made
Rosan was among the government officials that Ammann met that day during his Jakarta visit
Rosan told the press of Apple’s plans for a local production of AirTag
a device that people find their personal items
This AirTag vendor facility is part of the $1 billion investment pledge that Apple has proposed
Apple has picked Batam -- Riau Islands’ largest city -- for the manufacturing plant. Rosan claimed that the Batam factory would supply 65 percent of what Apple needs to meet its global demand
and there will be more of Apple’s vendors coming [to Indonesia] so [the] $1 billion investment pledge will eventually increase
Vietnam already has over 30 Apple suppliers
So our [cooperation] scheme will be similar to Apple's investment in other ASEAN economies,” Rosan said.
The minister claimed that Apple had already “taken a look” at their future Batam manufacturing site
“The [construction] should begin immediately
We are targeting to have this facility finished by early 2026," Rosan said
Rosan’s comment also showed some conflicting views within the Indonesian government
While Rosan was satisfied with Apple’s $1 billion investment
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that those figures were “insufficient”
Ammann had met with Agus earlier that day.
Not long after speaking with the Apple executive
Agus said that the government had not set a time frame for a deal with the iPhone 16 producer
Agus wants Apple to take its time to make sure that whatever it proposes meets certain “fairness criteria”
This includes having Apple’s eventual investment to create as many jobs for the locals
Indonesia will also take into account how big of an investment has Apple poured into other countries

pple has begun work on a factory worth US$1 billion [Rp 16 trillion] on the island of Batam in Riau Islands to make its AirTag tracking devises

The government has been pushing for direct investment from Apple to revoke a sales ban that prevents the company from selling its latest iPhone model in the country
but the AirTag factory project has yet to convince the Industry Ministry to lift the ban
“We have managed to convince them [Apple] to enter Batam
shown to us and we have done cut and fill to start construction
it will be ready for the AirTag [production],” Rosan said on Wednesday
