CIANJUR REGENCY - Acting Governor Bey Machmudin began his work in 2025 by planting 25,000 tree seedlings in the Cikanyere area
Tens of thousands of tree seedlings were planted on 59 hectares of land
generally productive plants such as avocado
"May the new year bring blessings and goodness to all of us
Bey emphasized the importance of preserving nature in West Java
The existence of trees with strong roots makes the absorption of rainwater more optimal so that landslides
"We have forgotten a lot about nature
opening up natural areas without considering environmental sustainability
we must be more environmentally friendly," said Bey
the environmental challenges in West Java are not easy
In addition to deforestation due to land conversion
to the media to work together to make the environmental rehabilitation program as implemented today a success
Bey conveyed the message that tree planting should not only be a ceremonial event but should be continued by taking care of the newly planted trees so that they do not die
"I also ask that the planting of these trees not only be crowded when planting them
but also be looked after and cared for until they grow big later," said Bey
Cianjur in collaboration with PT Adaro Indonesia as a donor of plant seedlings through the CSR program
Tree planting will also continue to be carried out in other areas gradually
Metrics details
A destructive shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck Cianjur
This earthquake resulted in 602 casualties and the collapse of over 67,504 residences
we deployed 19 temporary seismic stations to monitor aftershocks for a period of 30 days
We manually picked arrival times for 4499 P-waves and 3419 S-waves and determined locations for 514 events
phase refinement through waveform cross correlation
and relocation using double-difference methods
we were able to determine 442 well-defined hypocenters of the aftershocks
We identified two clusters of aftershocks: one in the NNW-SSE direction
The seismogenic zone of these clusters ranges from a depth of 3 to 13 km
Our interpretation suggests that these clusters may indicate a conjugate fault
It is possible that the mainshock (Mw5.6) Cianjur earthquake on November 21
2022 occurred on the WSW-ENE direction with sinistral movement
The upper left inset map shows the location of West Java (black rectangle) with respect to Southeast Asia
The lowest left inset map shows the location of the study area (blue rectangle) with respect to West Java
Our analysis focused on understanding the spatial distribution of relocated aftershocks to better comprehend their source mechanism since well-located aftershocks can be useful in determining fault plane orientations
(A) 10 seismic stations recorded an event on 03 December 2022 using three-component seismogram
Red and blue lines indicate the onset of P- and S- wave arrival times
(B) Wadati diagram of 514 events and its corresponding VP/Vs ratio of 1.7205
(C) Histogram of Ts-Tp residual for 514 events
We only analyzed the events with location errors of 5 km or less
and which were detected by a minimum of three stations
This resulted in 514 events for which moment magnitudes were calculated
The length of the P-wave time window we used is half of the S and P travel-time differences
and the S-wave time window is 1.5 times the length of the P-wave window
This length is sufficient as the events have epicentral distances of less than 50 km
and the time window must exclude later arriving phases
The final model (red for Vs and blue for Vp) is selected based on the minimum RMS residual of 0.389887 s
The A-A’ and B-B’ show vertical cross section along SW-NE and NW–SE direction
approximately 20 km north of Cimandiri Rajamandala segment
It should be noted that identifying any surface rupture is challenging due to either a layer of alluvial material or recently deposited volcanic material on top of the epicenter region
the distribution of the aftershock sequence lies within the seismogenic zone located in the shallow crust
during this event within the co-seismic phase
both mechanisms must occur at the same time
it is suggested that the mainshock (Mw5.6) Cianjur earthquake likely occurred on a conjugate fault structure with WSW-ENE direction and sinistral movement similar to the structural pattern of the CFZ
dextral movement was observed in the second cluster with NNW-SSE direction
During the temporary local seismic observation (November 22
the seismic activity in the CFZ experienced relatively few events
earthquake source modelling and finite fault inversion) is still needed to describe the fault plane that triggered the Mw5.6 Cianjur earthquake (November 21
The distribution of relocated aftershocks shows clusters in space and time and relatively dense following the moderate earthquake (Mw5.6)
with the seismogenic zone between 3 and 13 km
Two clusters of aftershocks may indicate a conjugate fault in the Cianjur area
and the mainshock (Mw 5.6) occurred in the shorter fault with sinistral movement
The findings of this study could be utilized for future research in areas like seismic tomography and seismic hazard assessment in Cianjur

Cianjur - Earthquake is one of the disasters that could potentially occur in Cianjur Regency of West Java
It is because Cianjur lies on the Cugenang fault
which is currently active and prone to shifting
In an effort to increase preparedness capacity in disaster risk reduction
YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) in collaboration with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur Regency carried out a simulation on earthquake emergency response in Nyalindung Village of Cugenang District on Saturday (11/5)
The simulation was held based on the Disaster Management Plan and Contingency Plan documents which had been formulated by the Nyalindung Village Disaster Task Force and YEU
it was also as a follow-up action from the series of disaster risk reduction training that had previously been carried out
The simulation began on 11 May 2024 at 10.15 am local time and was attended by representatives from the BPBD Cianjur
the Disaster Task Force of Nyalindung Village and YEU
The simulation began with the sounding of an alarm as a sign of an earthquake
followed by communication and coordination between the Nyalindung Disaster Task Force and BPBD
the Disaster Task Force evacuated and handled injured persons as well as operated a public kitchen for earthquake-affected communities
this simulation was very helpful and useful for the Nyalindung community
especially for those who were affected by an earthquake
The community were more aware of the impact of earthquakes and they can reduce the risk of disaster
“We really appreciate the YEU team that has accompanied and assisted Nyalindung Village in preparing DRR documents
Contingency Plans and organizing emergency response simulation,” said Wawan
The simulation of the earthquake was chosen as the Cianjur region
Based on the disaster risk assessment of BPBD Cianjur
there are 10 disasters highly likely to occur in the area
but only the earthquake is the focus of the simulation
Considering the previous earthquake on 21 November 2022 which resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of damaged houses
then the simulation of earthquake emergency response was carried out with the aim of equipping the Village Disaster Task Force
local government and communities with the importance of understanding disaster preparedness and risk reduction
it is expected that in the future this simulation can be a regular effort in Nyalindung Village
TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that several regions of West Java will be showered with rain ranging from light to heavy for a week
The potential for moderate to very heavy rain that could be accompanied by thunder or strong winds is likely to occur in many areas as of November 1
On Monday, October 28, moderate to very heavy rain is predicted to occur in the regions of West Bandung
there is only a chance around Bogor Regency and City
the potential for moderate to heavy rain in Tasikmalaya
the potential starts from Bogor Regency and City
the potential is in Bogor Regency and City
According to the BMKG Meteorological Station in West Java
several factors influence the formation of convective clouds and rain in West Java
such as the relatively warm sea surface temperatures in some Indonesian waters
active Rossby equatorial waves over the weekend
Other factors include convergence or the meeting of winds in parts of West Java
local atmospheric instability that is mild to strong
thereby supporting the convective process on a local scale
especially during the afternoon to evening
BMKG advises to remain vigilant about the potential impacts of weather during the transition period
such as hot or scorching daytime temperatures due to the beginning of convective cloud growth and the potential for light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds in the afternoon or evening
be alert to hydro-meteorological disasters such as inundation

CIANJUR - Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB)
provided stimulant funds for repairing damaged houses in phase IV term I to residents affected by the Cianjur earthquake in Pancaniti
This gift continues the provision for Cianjur residents who were affected by the earthquake that occurred on November 21 2022
BNPB had provided third-stage stimulus funds for a total of 62,105 housing units
it is planned that 36,285 houses included in the data collection will be given stimulant assistance
in term I this will be given to repair 1,107 housing units
TNI Suharyanto said that accelerating post-earthquake handling was one of the efforts made by the President of the Republic of Indonesia
Joko Widodo to BNPB so that post-disaster handling can be handled quickly
"My presence today is at the behest of President Jokowi
so that regarding the interests of the people
especially those affected by post-disaster
(handling) is something that must be prioritized," said Suharyanto
"Today there are approximately 1,100 (houses) in the first (term) phase
neighbors and friends who haven't attended yet
basically those who enter the data collection will definitely get their names if they have the correct names," he added
Suharyanto explained that the impact of the earthquake which occurred almost two years ago caused losses of almost 5 trillion rupiah
but now repairs in all sectors are almost complete
"As a result of the November 21 2022 earthquake
the country had to spend almost 5 trillion," said Suharyanto
The progress of post-disaster repairs cannot be separated from the good pentahelix collaboration from all groups
thus making handling more precise and faster
the damage to people's houses affected by the earthquake in Cianjur on November 21 2022 has been repaired
of course other infrastructure (such as) schools
government offices and mosques is relatively complete," he said
volunteers and all the organizations involved
the results of the post-earthquake disaster reconstruction rehabilitation program in Cianjur were visible," he explained
Suharyanto also advised the public that the funds provided should only be used to build and repair houses that have been damaged by the earthquake
whether done independently or through the applicators provided
"It is still permissible to build independently
don't let independent people not follow the provisions
What this means is 60 million but it was only built for 30 million and the rest was used in various ways
but later they will be questioned and checked
It's called money from the government which must be accountable
everyone must can be accounted for," said Suharyanto
"Please those who build independently or on their own
the applicator has developed it so that the public can monitor it and also report it to the authorities if they feel there is something wrong with its production
if it has been built by the applicator and contractor
here there are legal officers who report it to the Police
so that this government assistance is really on target and to help Ladies and gentlemen
Suharyanto did not forget to remind residents and also the local government to continue to increase their preparedness to face potential disasters that might occur in the Cianjur Regency area
continue to increase preparedness because we live in fertile land
but on the other hand we live in a place where disasters are diverse," concluded Suharyanto
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that most areas in West Java will potentially rain over a week
The Head of the Meteorology Station of BMKG West Java
said several factors contributing to the increase in the supply of water vapor that forms convective clouds and the occurrence of rain in parts of West Java
Rakhmat mentioned that the factors include the relatively warm sea surface temperature around the waters of Indonesia
cyclonic circulation in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra and south of Java
"This results in wind bending and convergence in West Java," he said in a written statement on Sunday
the overall atmospheric instability is categorized as light to strong
light to moderate rains may continue in some parts of West Java
The following areas are forecast for moderate to heavy rainfall
accompanied by thunder and strong winds on a local scale and of short duration over the next week:
BMKG urges residents and relevant authorities to be vigilant for the possible occurrence of hydrometeorological disasters due to extreme weather that could lead to flooding, landslides, and fallen trees such as heavy rains and strong winds

Cases involving food distributed under the free nutritious meal programme were also reported in various regions across Indonesia
the Bombana regency in Southeast Sulawesi and Batang in Central Java
JAKARTA: Authorities are probing two cases of food poisoning outbreaks that have affected over 170 students under Indonesia's ambitious free nutritious meal programme
the latest of at least six known cases since the programme was launched in January
The nationwide project - part of President Prabowo Subianto’s key campaign promises - aims to boost the nation’s human resource quality in the long term by improving nutrition in children's meals and nurturing better educational outcomes
A recent and widely reported incident took place in Cianjur regency of West Java where at least 165 students were admitted to the hospital for food poisoning after consuming the free meal packages last Monday (Apr 21)
“We conducted checks on two schools which had 972 students in total
165 of them were sick,” Head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division of West Java’s Health Office Rochady Hendra said on Saturday
A 16-year-old student from the MAN 1 Islamic senior high school in Cianjur said that he noticed a “bad smell” coming from the shredded chicken
one of the dishes served in the nutritious meal programme on Monday morning last week
I began to feel dizzy and vomited,” 16-year-old M Raihan told Tempo
Kompas reported that 78 students from the two schools - MAN 1 Cianjur state Islamic senior high school and SMP PGRI 1 Cianjur junior high school - had shown symptoms of nausea
vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming the meal packages
The high number of patients due to the food poisoning cases forced the agency administration to declare a state of emergency in the region
The West Java Health Agency analysed some samples of food from the kitchen and vomit from the patients to assess for possible microbe contamination while the Cianjur Health Agency suspended meal production at the kitchen service units which produced the free nutritious meals
“The laboratory test results (for possible microbe contamination) have not yet been released,” National Nutrition Agency head Dadan Hindayana told Kompas on Monday as he gave the latest updates
Dadan also said that the exact cause of the incident remained unclear and was still being investigated
he had also said that training and a refresher course would be provided to food handlers to improve their skills
He also said that plastic food trays used in packaging the free nutritious meals may have contributed to the food poisoning experienced by the 165 students
that’s why we are requesting an immediate replacement,” he told Kompas on Thursday
In addition to concerns about the food trays
Dadan also instructed the head of the kitchen service unit in Cianjur to separate the flow of incoming and outgoing food items
Since the exact cause of the poisoning in Cianjur remains unknown
Dadan also said that the investigation has been hampered by the fact that the leftover food had already been disposed of by the schools
In addition to conducting lab tests on the food samples still available at the kitchen service unit
his agency also inspected the water and utensils used
calls from civic organisations have emerged for the government to suspend the programme
food poisoning cases involving food distributed under the free nutritious meal programme were also reported in other regions across Indonesia
including the Bombana regency in Southeast Sulawesi and Batang in Central Java
local media reported that at least 10 students from a primary school in Bombana in Sulawesi fell ill after consuming the free meal packages which included rice
The school principal told Tempo that there was an unpleasant smell from the crispy chicken
Police later confirmed the following day that 53 out of the 1,026 packages from the kitchen service unit were found to be spoiled
The 1,026 packages were supposed to be distributed to three schools in the area
at least 60 students from eight schools in Batang
Central Java fell ill after consuming the free nutritious meal packages on Apr 14
Indonesia Corruption Watch said that the incident was caused by a lack of standardisation among all kitchen units in preparing the food
Diah Saminarsih of the Center for Indonesia’s Strategic Development Initiatives told the Jakarta Post that the food poisoning likely stemmed from the government’s failure to thoroughly consider conditions and other external factors that differ from one region to another
“The government must at least review the programme and suspending it isn’t necessarily a bad idea,” she said
the issues must be categorised and solutions should be developed in consultation with experts and the public,” she added
Indonesian nutritionist Tan Shot Yen said she believes the free meals initiative was rolled out too quickly, CNA reported previously.
“The socialisation of this programme is very scarce at the grassroots,” she added

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Earthquakes shook several parts of West Java, including the Cianjur region on Friday afternoon, November 15, 2024. An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 was recorded by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) precisely at 3:38 p.m
the earthquake originated from 6.78 degrees South Latitude and 107.28 degrees East Longitude
"Located on land 16-kilometer northeast of the center of Cianjur Regency," said the Head of Tangerang BMKG Region II
The earthquake's epicenter was shallow at a depth of 4 kilometers
and Cikalong Wetan at the intensity scale of II-III MMI
the vibration was felt by several people and made light hanging objects swing
The earthquake could also be distinctly felt inside houses
a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 shook the neighboring region of Cianjur
The earthquake originated 83 kilometers in the sea southeast of the center of Sukabumi Regency
The Indonesian Ocean quake was shallow at a 16-kilometer depth
due to fault activity on the sea floor and shook the Cibeber (Cianjur) and Jampang Kulon (Sukabumi) areas on the intensity scale of III MMI
BMKG has recorded four earthquakes of which tremors could be felt throughout the day
Two earthquakes occurred earlier in the day with respective magnitudes of M4.8 and M5.3 in Enggano
Many people felt the earthquake in Enggano
as they were recorded at the III-IV MMI intensity scale
The Director of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center
mentioned that the earthquake occurred in a megathrust zone
"The earthquake is due to subduction plate activity," he said
caused tremors felt on the scale of II-III MMI
originating 102 kilometers southwest of Tanggamus
at a depth of 74 kilometers in the sea.

HOME ARTICLES The Cianjur Earthquake Reveals the Inadequacy of Disaster Resilience in Indonesia
Yanuar Nugroho
The aftermath of the Cianjur earthquake which claimed more than 330 lives calls for Jakarta to seriously review its disaster reduction and prevention efforts
Much more needs to be done to reduce future losses
On 21 November 2022, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Cianjur, West Java, with tremours felt as far away as in Jakarta (about 107 kilometres away) and in Tangerang. As of early December 2022
the quake had not only destroyed buildings
and infrastructure but also claimed at least 334 lives
and made 114,683 people homeless overnight
which did not need to be too powerful to be destructive
The level of destruction was mainly because the infrastructure in the Cianjur area and its residents were not disaster ready
It is easy to see that a midsized or larger earthquake in Jakarta would wreak much more havoc than in the Cianjur disaster.
neither the national nor metropolitan Jakarta governments seem to have taken serious action in earthquake prevention
not even issuing orders to retrofit at-risk buildings.
When opening the seventh session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) in Bali on 25 May 2022, President Joko Widodo (“Jokowi”) stated that that Indonesia was committed to and serious about disaster risk reduction (DRR)
Widodo’s administration has not put DRR and mitigation efforts in the mainstream of the country’s infrastructural development policy.
This is despite the existence of the Sendai Declaration in 2015 and the Sendai Framework 2015-2030
which outlined DRR priorities for countries at risk of natural hazards
in the wake of Japan’s tragic March 2011 tsunami disaster
The framework underlines seven priorities for DRR and emphasises that
if DRR were properly integrated into policy
governments would be able to reduce existing disaster risks and manage residual risks
disaster public literacy in Indonesia is minimal
unlike in Japan or other earthquake-prone countries
has not properly conducted public education on the risks and impacts of naturally occurring disasters and what to do when such hazards occur
there is no evidence that the local government had conducted public education programmes on the risks for locals living near the Cimandiri fault line
It is the same for metropolitan Jakarta.
It is this author’s view that such a lack of disaster literacy applies to Indonesia’s elites
which includes its decision-makers and public officials
How the national government formulates its policies on development
and other infrastructural undertakings does not seem to reflect any understanding of the need to follow existing global standards for DRR
This is particularly the case for the construction of housing
and even critical public structures and facilities like ports and bridges.
but somehow these standards are not applied consistently
The village head was warned not to report the case
but he changed his mind when a disaster hit the shore of Ranolapo in 2016
Although there is a formal requirement for a Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS)
where proposed development sites must be analysed for natural disaster or hazard risks
where the Central Java Provincial Government disobeyed the KHLS recommendation to mandate that the state-owned Cement Indonesia factory change the location for a lime mining project.
The situation is complicated further because when credible
the government response has mostly been that of denial or avoidance
One theory in disaster planning and control is that public panic could lead to social unrest and even chaos if it cannot be contained
The Cianjur earthquake was a wake-up call for Jakarta and Indonesia at large: to build up the capacity of the government and its people in disaster resilience.
By not seriously committing to a nationwide DRR programme
the Jokowi administration might be choosing the appearance of stability over honestly recognising and preparing the population for future disasters
This is short-sighted as the potential loss of lives and treasure in the next naturally occurring disaster is only going to increase
given climate change and its impact on the largest archipelago in the “Ring of Fire”.

have occurred since the November 2022 earthquake
The largest aftershock measured Magnitude 4.3
while the smallest registered at Magnitude 1.0
the government declared a 30-day state of emergency from 21 November 2022 to 20 December 2022
a 90-day recovery phase was declared following the end of the emergency phase
spanning from 21 December 2022 to 20 March 2023
through the Indonesian Disaster Management Authority or Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB)
launched the Cianjur Emergency Response Plan followed by a recovery plan involving numerous technical ministries and non-governmental organizations
The earthquake had impacted a total of 117,068 individuals
114,683 people were evacuated to over 190 evacuation centers across the Cianjur district
and a further 7,193 individuals sustained injuries
evacuated communities started to return to their homes and commenced their activities aimed at recovery within their villages
it was determined that over 60,000 housing units had suered damage
with 14,678 of these houses being severely impacted and rendered unsuitable for habitation
more than 14,000 households found themselves compelled to continue residing in evacuation centers
the earthquake also inicted harm upon water resources
and oces while also inciting landslides in the region
BNPB led the emergency response activity supported by numerous technical ministries and other authorities
there were a total of 1,076 non-governmental organizations and private donors providing assistance and support to the aected household

More than 340 people are dead or missing following a relatively small but shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Cianjur
when relatively small or medium earthquakes become disastrous
initial assements are made and blame is regularly attributed to the vulnerability of shelters and buildings
Disaster management is often reduced to merely the distribution of emergency relief followed by patchy recovery
Then cycle begins again when another supposedly preventable disaster occurs
What is missing is a seismic mitigation master plan that barely exists in quake-prone Indonesia
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has explained three main elements that led to the Cianjur earthquake’s catastrophic damage:
The government already has a national seismic map providing information on potential quakes. The government also provides information information on practical solutions for small families during quakes
it does not have a plan to enforce the seismic map
After 15 years of disaster management reform in Indonesia
the government still needs a clear operational map in implementing and enforcing mitigation policies
The operational map for seismic mitigation should be downscaled to a unit or house level - assessing risk and making plans by individual name and address
This needs to be followed by regular monitoring
I propose seven steps to ensure the continuity of earthquake-safe housing implementation at the grassroots level
the government must immediately produce a detailed institutional road map downscaled to the district and neighbourhood levels
Such a map must show how local governments routinely adopt and enforce codes and standards for earthquake-resistant shelters
Second, creating a public administration system that consistently controls safety standards for housing and infrastructure. The current implementation of local governments’ minimum service standards must include ensuring safe shelters and buildings in disaster-prone areas
integrating the building permit process with the disaster mitigation agenda
The procedures should function as the first filter to ensure public safety
the regulation often only administers permit retribution without any technical provisions regarding the intricacies of how to anticipate disaster
transforming the bureaucracy responsible for the issuance of building permits
the licensing bureaucracy is prone to corruption
permit later” approach because ‘everything can be arranged with money’
The formal procedure I’ve experienced was that it took 2-3 years for a permit to build a house
I propose that government eliminate the administrative costs of building permits for poor families in disaster-prone regions
The fees often force low-income groups to avoid building permit process
Fifth, empowering local builders in villages to be agents of change. My research in Sikka, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, - one of Indonesia’s earthquake-prone areas where more than half of the housing stock collapsed in 1992 - many local builders often promote seismic mitigation measures
Of the dozens of builders and handymen I interviewed between 2008 and 2018 in Sikka
they often advise homeowners consider seismic risk reduction
poor families do not want to invest in “additional materials”
there is always an extra cost to strengthening buildings
The picture of a reinforced wall below is an example of a product from local builders
Strengthening brick walls using reinforced concrete could help protect them
transforming the behaviour of the private sector in building houses
Profit over quality often compromises safety
the government must develop and implement an ambitious retrofitting program at all levels
This can strengthen existing buildings and still functioning houses to withstand the next earthquakes or cyclones
In the Cianjur earthquake, once again, we saw that the failure to ensure the safety of school buildings and houses resulted in the death of children
Even if there are successful technical solutions
a systematic earthquake-safe impact can only be achieved if there is a clear implementation plan
The government needs to systematically reduce the hidden transaction costs of building houses
The challenge is getting bigger because there are more and more ageing buildings and houses in earthquake-prone areas
but there is no guarantee 25 years from now when these shelters will be tested by extreme weather and earthquake events on a regular basis

at least 90 percent of the villagers' houses were damaged by the earthquake
Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) head Dwikorita Karnawati
the epicenter of the earthquake was at the coordinates 6.84 south latitude and 107.05 east longitude
This location is about 10 km southwest of Cianjur and 15 km northeast of the Sukabumi municipality
The earthquake hypocenter was at a depth of about 10 km
Aftershocks occurred 62 times up to 7 p.m.
BMKG earthquake and tsunami center head Daryono said that the earthquake was suspected to have originated from the Cimandiri land fault zone
The results of the analysis of the source mechanism indicate that the quake had a shear movement mechanism
the impact of the shaking became strong and destructive

Lembang and Bandung areas are all complex tectonic areas
There are active earthquake lines in those areas
namely the Cimandiri and Lembang faults as well as a number of minor faults
“This tectonic complexity has the potential to trigger shallow crustal earthquakes
It is a permanent earthquake prone area,” he said
Several damaging earthquakes have also occurred in the Sukabumi-Cianjur zone
which are thought to have been caused by activity at the Cimandiri fault
there were strong earthquakes that damaged Cianjur and its surroundings
there were 5.4- and 5.5-magnitude earthquakes respectively
which had caused a lot of damage and casualties
there was a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that resulted in more than 1,900 severely damaged homes,” he said
A seismologist from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB)
said the Cimandiri fault zone could trigger an earthquake measuring up to 7.4 magnitude
“Historical records indicate that a major earthquake in the 1800s that originated in this area caused damage to Batavia,” he said
This amplification causes a large scale of damage even though the strength of the earthquake is relatively small
the vulnerability of the West Java region to the impact of earthquakes is also due to its geomorphological conditions in the form of valleys and hills
which are prone to landslides if shocks occur
soil layers of thick volcanic sediments can also potentially amplify these shocks
“This amplification causes a large scale of damage even though the strength of the earthquake is relatively small,” he said

Jakarta - The Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center
revealed the results of an analysis of the earthquake that occurred on Monday afternoon
The update parameter is said to be fixed at the initial information
Daryono said the earthquake's epicenter was located in the Sukalarang area
The depth of the epicenter is located 11 kilometers
unlike the initial information that states 10 kilometers
"This type of shallow earthquake is suspected to be due to the activity of the Cimandiri Fault," Daryono said in a written statement
The earthquake was also felt in Cianjur City with an intensity scale of V - VI MMI (the tremor can be felt by all residents
Most of them were all shocked and ran outside)
Whereas in Garut and Sukabumi it was also stronger than the initial information
namely IV to V MMI (The tremor was felt by almost all residents
the BMKG monitoring results showed that there were 15 aftershock activities with the largest magnitude of 4.0," Daryono continued
and also avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to earthquakes
"Check and make sure the building where you live is sufficiently earthquake resistant
or that there is no damage due to earthquake tremors that could endanger the stability of the building before you return to your house."

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team has identified 151 bodies of victims of the Cianjur Earthquake
The number is less than half of the disaster's total casualty
Nyoman Eddy said that the 151 identified victims including two out of the four bodies were found on Tuesday at noon
In a press release issued by the West Java Police on Wednesday
Nyoman said that the victims were identified using DNA matching
The data are contained in the post-mortem (PM) and antemortem (AM) information taken from the victims' families
The two victims recently identified are:
the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that 327 lives were lost in the disaster
while 13 people are still missing and 68 are being treated for their injuries
A total of 108,720 people were displaced by the Cianjur earthquake
currently living in shelters and evacuation sites
the coordination center for handling the disaster was shifted to the Regent of Cianjur
The reason is that the Cianjur earthquake is categorized as a local disaster
and so the BNPB gave the authority to coordinate all relief efforts to the local government

ITS News – Staying in an earthquake-prone area
Indonesia was once again shocked by the earthquake that hit Cianjur Regency
Cianjur was rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 which claimed more than 100 lives and lost thousands of buildings
According to the observations of senior researchers from the Research Center for Disaster Mitigation and Climate Change (Puslit MKPI) ITS Dr
the Cianjur earthquake occurred due to tectonic plates that have moved and pressed Indonesia’s territory since millions of years ago
the source of the ground earthquake from this active fault is still not known with certainty
adjacent to Cianjur there is the Cimandiri fault which stretches from Pelabuhan Ratu Bay to Cianjur
the location of the fault which is far to the north of the incident is certainly not the cause of this Cianjur earthquake,” Amien confirmed
Data report from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) as of 22 November 2022 morning recorded 103 people died world due to the impact of the earthquake
As many as 377 people were injured and 7,064 people were displaced as a result of this natural disaster
Not to mention thousands of buildings also suffered light to heavy damage
The location of the earthquake in Cianjur Regency with a magnitude of 5.6 on November 21
The earthquake was enough to feel the shaking
Even though it is classified as a small magnitude
the shallow position of the earthquake event causes damage to the buildings above it
the earthquake that occurred did not have the potential for a tsunami because the source of the earthquake came from the mainland
Explained by ITS Geophysics Engineering Department lecturer
an earthquake is an event whose appearance cannot be predicted
reflecting on the earthquake that has hit Indonesia several times
it should be used as a reference for mitigation
Mitigation itself is divided into two types
Namely structural mitigation that focuses on infrastructure development and non-structural mitigation that focuses on public education
Amien also explained earthquake relief based on the results of the 1995 Kobe earthquake survey
the biggest responsibility for our safety lies with ourselves
“Instill knowledge about earthquakes so we can be safe,” he reminded
Amien also hopes that the government will better map the existing faults in Indonesia and provide a mapping of how the distance and model of the house should be built
“Keep in mind that earthquakes don’t kill
so mapping needs to be done,” he emphasized once again
Amien hopes that the community can restore disaster literacy
People should not think that disaster is fate
“Growing knowledge of threats around will reduce disaster risk,” concluded Amien

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Earthquakes hit a couple of regions in Indonesia this morning
a 5.4-magnitude quake shook the region at 07:52 a.m
The epicenter was located 90 kilometers away southeast of Tuapejat
The 34-kilometer-deep earthquake was felt at III MMI at the intensity scale
"The earthquake was shallow and associated with the Mentawai's fault structure," said the head of the earthquake and tsunami center of the meteorology
and geophysics agency or BMKG Daryono.
the earthquake will not potentially cause a tsunami
BMKG also recorded a 2.9-magnitude earthquake in Cianjur
The strongest vibration was felt in Cugenang at III MMI at the intensity scale
with an epicenter at 7 kilometers northwest of Cianjur and a 6-kilometer depth on land
Two minutes after a weaker aftershock hits with a 2.1-magnitude and an epicenter 6 kilometers northwest of Cianjur
BMKG has not released any additional information on this earthquake but based on the location
the latest one was caused by activities on Cugenang Fault

Deadly Bus Accident Leaves 12 Dead in Indonesia
West Java on 22 November 2022 left thousands of houses heavily damaged
especially the urgency for building tents/shelters
ITB and Rumah Amal Salman helped victims of the earthquake by constructing temporary shelters made of bamboo
he made the shelter in consideration of its quick set-up and good accommodation
Bamboo is selected as the main material due to its ease of access
its internal strength is remarkable as support
"Bamboo has been well-known as a good temporary semi-permanent material since long ago," Dr
Andry explained. The bamboo shelters were able to be built in a short time- approximately in one day- starting from laying of the first frame until its subsequent construction processes
The secret of its rapid assembly is its simple installation technique and structural strength that depends on the shape that causes its space
the people there are familiar with bamboo as a construction material
applying the nut-bolt technique with bamboo is new for them
they can learn this technique fast and quickly contributed to the shelters’ construction," he added
Andry’s innovative bamboo shelter is based on the earthquake shelter he had worked on before
"I had already prepared ready-made structures and models
My team and I took a lot of inspiration from previous cases
Due to differences in location and environment
the designs that will be built could not simply be a copy from the previous cases
"The wind strength in Cianjur is different than Lombok and Palu
we must create a design that adapts to its surroundings while maintaining a similar structure," Dr
"This bamboo shelter is able to accommodate more than 50 people with better spatial comfort"
the dimension of shelter for victims of natural disaster is 5.5m x 12m x 3.25m
Most tents use tarps as their cover which conducts heat from the sun to the space below it directly
The bamboo shelter also utilizes the same cover except its ability to provide more comfort
The minimum height of this shelter reaches 5m; hence
heat exposure does not interfere with the space under it
the shelter can reach a span of 8x12m with a height of 4-5m
this bamboo shelter was able to stand for up to 6 months
Reports received from the team revealed that the people feel cooler and more comfortable using this shelter."
shelters serving as emergency mosques have also been established on 2 December 2022
"My team and I are very pleased with the enthusiasm from both the community and ZENI members on the site
Many take photos of the shelters and want to learn more about them," Dr
Andry said when asked what his future hopes are for his innovations in disaster mitigation assistance
Andry and his team planned to hold a workshop about their bamboo shelter to rescue teams so that its principles and construction can be shared with people in need

the groundwater potential in this village is at a depth of 75 meters
we found an adequate water supply at a depth of 50 meters
and the drilling was halted at a depth of 56 meters
The drilling took place in August 2023," explained the lecturer from the Water Resource Engineering Research Group
Groundwater was chosen due to its reliability
compared to shallow wells or water from irrigation runoff
"The produced water has a substantial flow rate and is clear
It takes about a week to ensure that the well water is tasteless
which is still within reasonable limits," shared Farhan Setiawan
This program is integrated with other community services
such as the establishment of sanitation infrastructure
The plan includes the construction of a water tower on top of the MCK building in the same place
Groundwater will be pumped and automatically stored in the 1000-liter water tower
The community services have been ongoing since July 2023 and are expected to conclude before the new year
Arno Adi Kuntoro hopes that the provided water resource can meet the needs of 49 families in Cinangsi Village
the operation and maintenance of this drilled well is continuous
as it has been entrusted to the Nurul Ihsan Islamic Boarding School Management
This community service represents a contribution from ITB towards the establishment of basic infrastructure
which cannot always be independently provided by the local community," he added

The UGM Faculty of Engineering Alumni Family (Katgama) has built a community hall made from bamboo for Talaga Village residents in Cugenang District
This initiative is one of Katgama’s programs under the “Indonesia Bangkit” social program
which aims to support communities affected by disasters
The aid provided is expected to be sustainable and beneficial in the long term
The choice of location was influenced by a previous earthquake that occurred 10 km southwest of Cianjur Regency
The impact resulted in thousands of damaged houses and landslides that disrupted traffic access
bamboo was predominantly chosen as the building material
bamboo construction was significantly more cost-effective
The bamboo pavilion is expected to have a lifespan of approximately five years
during which Katgama can implement various community social programs
These social programs may include research on bamboo pavilion construction
One such training program could focus on well construction
commonly known as “suntik sumur” in Yogyakarta
wells are typically not built with concrete or stones but are dug directly into the ground
The bamboo pavilion measures 14×10 meters and includes ample space for communal activities
The construction primarily utilizes bamboo
featuring several innovations patented by Professor Eugenius Pradipto
Hollow bamboo piles prevent water from entering the bamboo structure
making it more durable and resistant to decay
Modular bamboo flooring and roof coverings provide flexibility and speed in construction
the flooring and the lower part of the structure are raised above the ground to protect against termites and provide comfort
Professor Eugenius Pradipto hopes to involve faculties from other disciplines in carrying out social activities in Talaga Village
“I have a roof tile block system that can change or extend its lifespan
it can be increased to 20 years because of its reversible construction system
The advantage is that only one-third of the tile is exposed
with two-thirds covered by the layer above it,” the professor said
This allows us to compete with factory-made roof tile products
it is very affordable without the need for ceiling covering.”

When there was an earthquake tragedy that afternoon
This district is passed by the Cibeureum river to the Cianjur river
The large number of people who farm and garden can be seen from the use of land with a total area of 6,600 hectares
which has been used for rice fields covering an area of 1,800 hectares and 2,400 hectares for plantations
many agricultural lands or plantations in this district are located on the outskirts of cliffs that are prone to landslides

itb.ac.id — Citarum Watershed is the largest and longest river watershed in West Java
with its main river stretching 269 km long
One region situated on the banks of Citarum RSA is the Cianjur Regency
specifically in the middle of Cirata Reservoir
According to the monthly precipitation data of Central Citarum Watershed
the region has a monsoon climate with two rain peaks concentrated in rainy months
the precipitation rate decreases as much as under 100mm/month during the dry season
According to the result of field condition monitoring
some communities in the Cianjur Regency have no access to clean water as determined by the Minister of Health Regulation 2010 No
492 regarding the Drinking Water Quality Specification
An example of this case was the drought in the 2010 dry season
where the water crisis forced local residents to use water from the Cisalak River
the water did not meet the health regulation to be used for bath
The catastrophe showed how vital water resource management is for mitigating water inequality during drier months
One solution to ensure clean water is to provide an alternative water supply by constructing a Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) facility
Through the Citarum Community Service Program 2022
ITB has contributed to building an RWH system in Tarikolot Village
The RWH is expected to reduce the scale of water extraction from wells and protected springs
which is currently sitting at 53,67% of our water sources
“Water from the RWH system will be used for irrigation
or even drinking purposes after further processing
RWH is usually applied in areas with a precipitation rate of more than 200mm/year
and this applies to Indonesia,” explained Dr
The required components for RWH are a catchment area (rooftop)
channel or pipe (from the rooftop to reservoir)
This system can utilize a wide range of filters
from a basic one like a sand filter to a more sophisticated one like a Reverse Osmosis if the water will be used for drinking purposes
The volume of containment tank could also be customized depending on the water quantity needed or the amount of space available
Another filtration system made from zeolite
there are multiple stages in the RWH planning process
we need to obtain actual condition analysis through field surveys
the team will select the location for constructing the RWH system
The ideal location is in a critical area with a minimum precipitation rate of 1300 mm/year
another condition that one must be mindful of is its position
which is placed on a building’s side or back area near a chamfer
as well as possible to store the materials and tools needed
The third step is designing the facility in adherence to the Indonesian National Standard
we need to maintain the RWH container by draining it once every two months and during rainy seasons and routine cleaning of the chamfer and reservoir’s base
Mariana also invited local communities to support the operation and maintenance of the RWH by appointing individuals or groups as the management team
Clean water distribution is regulated with a schedule
“RWH maintenance must be carried out daily
and annually by the management team or the community as PRW users,” she added
the ITB team also held educational activities intended for 100 year 5 and 6 students of the Tegalsari Primary School to teach them the importance of clean water
They were given an introductory course to various clean water sources and the system and components of PRW
students can comprehend the function of PRW and utilize it optimally for their daily life

Dompet Dhuafa and PT ADM Indonesia Trading & Logistics
for assisting us with our daily requirements.” Ati conclude
he deadly earthquake that struck on Monday in Cianjur regency
has highlighted the shortcomings in the nation’s disaster preparedness
sparking calls for more disaster risk reduction at a time when policymakers have focused more on disaster response
natural disasters are a common occurrence across the Indonesian archipelago
Data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) show that over 3,000 natural disasters resulting in the deaths of more than 700 people were recorded in 2021 alone
more than 5,000 people lost their lives to natural disasters
the majority in the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Palu
As the death toll continues to rise with dozens still unaccounted for in the aftermath of the Cianjur quake
disaster management experts bemoaned that authorities seemed none the wiser
Policymakers had yet to learn from the mistakes made in the wake of such disasters
a policy researcher at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
He noted that the nation’s disaster policies leaned more toward offering stopgap solutions in disaster response
as opposed to investing in preventive measures to mitigate future risks
our policymakers are more concerned with disaster response
not preparedness,” Dzakwan told The Jakarta Post
“What we need is political commitment […] from the government to prioritize continuity in addressing natural disasters.”
This lack of commitment had contributed to failed efforts in amending the country’s outdated 2007 Disaster Mitigation Law
as well as by local administrations in building adequate capacity for regional disaster mitigation agencies (BPBD)
Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has an online platform that provides public information on potential natural disasters
but Dzakwan insists the government must also ensure that the country’s early warning system is effective
“There needs to be concrete collaboration involving many parties,” he said
“The Communications and Information Ministry
also needs to play its part by ensuring that more people can access the internet.”
Monday’s 5.6-magnitude quake has resulted in hundreds of lives lost and displaced people
It also destroyed buildings and infrastructure
BNPB chief Suharyanto told the press from his temporary field office in Cianjur that 272 people had been killed and 2,046 injured as of Thursday
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo instructed the Public Works and Housing Ministry to lead the efforts to rebuild local houses that had been destroyed or damaged in the disaster and to ensure that the new buildings met the standards for earthquake-proof structures
Saut Sagala of the Research Development Initiative (RDI) in Bandung
said authorities needed to incorporate the principles of urban planning in its disaster preparedness initiatives
particularly with regard to better supervision over building permits (IMB)
the government should take into consideration [disaster risk] before agreeing to issue them,” Saut told the Post on Thursday
He also underlined that authorities also needed to conduct more inspections on the structural integrity of existing buildings
Authorities have pointed to flawed construction as a major factor contributing to the high death toll
The Cianjur quake had caused varying levels of damage to more than 56,000 houses across 15 districts in the regency as of Thursday
with the top-down approach to national policies on disaster preparedness
Saut said local communities also needed to build collective awareness and capacity to anticipate worst-case scenarios
“It is imperative for communities to have a bottom-up approach to disaster preparedness
Whether they receive aid from international NGOs or the government
[people] usually need to see proof that something is working” before implementing the programs locally
Community-based initiatives for disaster preparedness
should incorporate drills on what to do in the event of a disaster
including as part of the curriculum at local schools
the deputy representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Indonesia
told the Post on Thursday that Indonesia’s disaster preparedness and response could still be improved with a greater emphasis on children’s welfare
particularly as they were among the most vulnerable groups in a disaster
“[Disaster preparedness] is always something of a work in progress
and that is not only an issue in Indonesia
“But in a country where disaster is common
children’s lives are always on the line
We have to make disaster plans centered on their needs.”
the BMKG’s earthquake and tsunami mitigation head
said the country’s capacity in disaster mitigation was still limited due to different levels of public awareness on disaster risk reduction across disaster-prone areas
“The availability of disaster mitigation educators is also limited
some regional administrations are not yet aware what their areas should do to mitigate disasters,” he said on Wednesday
The BNPB’s Suharyanto said the agency would continue to champion the pentahelix collaboration approach to improving Indonesia’s disaster preparedness
which involved synergy between multiple stakeholders in government
“Indonesia is a supermarket for natural disasters,” he told the Post on Wednesday
“It will take time to increase people’s awareness that they live in a disaster-prone area

it is recorded 62 people died," informed Abdul Muhari
the victims were from Rancagoong village in Cilau sub-district
Limbagansari village in Cianjur sub-district
25 people were still buried under collapsed buildings in Cijedil village
and 79 other people were injured in the earthquake
The total number of displaced residents reached 5,389

the quake damaged 443 homes in Sukabumi district and 14 homes in Sukabumi city
which closed a cross-provincial road in Cianjur district," Muhari informed
the urgent needs in the field included 20 units of tents
He further said that the local Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) is still collecting data on the number of fatalities and damaged infrastructures
He appealed to residents in Cianjur district and its surrounding areas to evacuate if they feel their houses are still not safe and remain vigilant about the potential for aftershocks
"We ask residents to follow and get information from the official channels of BNPB, BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency), BPBD, and local government. Because aftershocks are still being felt even though they are less powerful than the previous earthquake," he said
11/28/2022 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) – The earthquake in Cianjur
and nine more individuals are still reported missing due to the quake
Both domestic and international aid organizations poured into Indonesia in order to help the thousands that were displaced during the quake and provide medical care for those who were injured
a video went viral of some unknown individuals removing a church’s name from a humanitarian aid tent that was providing care for earthquake victims in Cianjur
some people can be seen dismantling the words ‘The Indonesian Evangelical Reformed Church’s Love Action Team’ from the outside of the tent
“This is very regrettable and should not happen again
The identity label of the tent provider was removed by unscrupulous residents in the refugee camp in Cianjur.”
Ridwan Kamil said that natural disasters could happen to anyone
and aid providers should be allowed to help from various groups
The governor also said that the church labeling the aid tent with its name was not an unusual action
and labels is a normal thing because maybe it is part of reporting accountability to donors who trust them,” he said
Ridwan Kamil has asked the West Java Police Chief to follow up on the matter
“Even though we are not brothers in faith
we are still brothers in nationality and humanity,” he added
