(above) links passengers and cargo to the city of Dumai unlocking the potential for big economic benefits The Dumai and Rupat Island ports—important links in Indonesia’s transportation network— are emblematic of the country’s infrastructure challenges The ferry route that connects the city of Dumai to Rupat Island serves as the principal entry and exit point for vehicles aiding the transfer of vital products such as clothing Cargo trucks rely on this route to export palm oil and rubber for further distribution the route also plays a role in the healthcare system as emergency responders transport patients from the island to medical facilities in Dumai Ambulance boarding the ferry from Rupat Island to Dumai the Dumai and Rupat Island ports continue to face many obstacles resulting in lengthy wait times for vehicles and passengers especially during busy periods such as seasonal vacations one road is used to board and deboard all passengers This highlights the need for infrastructure improvements such as improved parking and waiting facilities and separated roads for passengers and cargo Addressing such challenges are crucial not only for increasing transportation efficiency but also for stimulating regional economic activity MCC is working with subnational governments to make infrastructure investments in five target provinces The aim is to attract private sector contributions that will support the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure such as the Dumai and Rupat Island ports—located in Riau province— resulting in lower logistics costs the compact Laboratory of Chemical Reaction and Catalysis (TRKK) of ITB and Pertamina Co-processing is a fuel processing that use mixture of fossil fuel and green diesel materials.Catalyst research team from ITB were present during both the loading process Among the members of the research team are Dr Melia Laniwati said that the tested catalyst (entered) into the reactor were about 12 tons With several consideration such as unit condition the test were not conducted 100% using palm oil This process is called co-processing.“The first developed catalyst was tested on December 2014 it is fixed/enhanced to make the second generation When the opportunity came when it was time for the reactor to change its catalysts in 2019 the catalyst is used,” explained Melia. The test result is satisfying The quality of mixture between diesel and green diesel is very favorable and fulfill market specification “So we can ensure that the co-processing test was successful,” she said the team from ITB hope Pertamina can apply the catalyst to similar reactors on other oil refineries because material substitution can save country’s foreign exchange reserves.Catalyst is a chemical material used in oil Sunday evening acknowledged that there had been a pipe leakage from one of its pipes located at the Port Of Chevron Pacific Indonesia-Dumai in the Riau Province.  This incident occurred at 14:50 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Saturday according to the oil firm’s corporate communications manager Sonitha Poernomo in a statement on the following day of February 28.  The spokesperson was unable to explain the detailed amount of crude oil that spilled to the area’s waters as it is currently being calculated by the firm’s mitigation team the firm’s early estimates conclude that it does not reach thousands of barrels.  “At the time the pipes in the port were not in use and field officials immediately cleaned the area and fixed the leaking pipe,” said Sonitha Poernomo.  She assured that the crude oil spill is not hazardous and toxic waste (B3 waste) as it was confirmed that it came from the company’s port pipeline Upon mitigating further loss, Chevron Pacific Indonesia installed oil booms to prevent a broader spread of oil and constantly cleaned the oils that managed to escape the pipes The company has also worked together with the Dumai City administration to further protect local residents and the environment.  Dumai chief of environmental pollution control said local officials have mobilized mitigation teams to the site of the oil spill and prevented further losses to the environment.  Also Read: Illegal Oil Tapping Costs Chevron Rp23bn Loss Scorching Hot Weather Grips Indonesia: BMKG Reports Temperatures Hit 37 Degrees Celsius 87 Bird Species Identified in Giam battled isolated fires in Sumatra’s Riau province in late February as the onset of the region’s first dry season of 2024 sparked wildfires in some peatland areas “The water source is pretty far away and the surrounding area is very dry,” said Joko Susilo the head of the emergency and logistics section at the disaster management agency in Dumai State and community firefighters spent much of February attending to fires smoldering in areas of peatland which are carbon-dense wetlands formed by compaction of biomass over thousands of years Riau province has 3.8 million hectares (9.4 million acres) of peatland Riau experiences two distinct dry seasons a year: in addition to the same dry season that occurs across much of the rest of Indonesia the province also sees another dry spell around February-March owing to the shift to a northeasterly monsoon wind pattern Southern districts of Riau such as Kampar usually record sufficient rainfall during February home to the province’s oil palm and acacia plantations typically endure around six weeks of water deficit Rainfall in northern Riau then accelerates in April and May before Indonesia’s principal dry season saps the water table and elevates fire risk from June through October In the week ending March 2, Pantau Gambut, a Jakarta-based NGO working on peatland protection said there were 83 hotspots burning in peatlands across Indonesia The provincial disaster management agency said much of its focus in February was concentrated in Dumai around 11 hectares (27 acres) had been burned by wildfires said the fires were concentrated in the villages of Tanjung Palas and Gurun Panjang in Dumai The Dumai city government declared a state of emergency in February as the fires emerged in outlying rural areas Firefighters reported difficulties accessing water sources near some fires although sufficient water was obtained in other reservoirs where water levels remained high following the rainy season in the new year “We need help extinguishing the fires with [aerial] water bombing,” said Joko Joko also called on farmers and members of the public to refrain from clearing land by setting vegetation on fire He noted that the fire in Gurun Panjang had started in an oil palm concession before spreading to a community’s plantation but did not confirm the identity of the company Responders have also attended to hotspots further inland in Riau’s Rokan Hilir district an official in the Rokan Hilir disaster management agency said local authorities had not declared an emergency status because the fires burning there were considered small and contained to three subdistricts “If the wildfires continue to spread from these three subdistricts then steps will be taken to establish an emergency alert status,” Devita told Mongabay Indonesia on Feb An El Niño system occurs when warmer sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean change weather patterns around the world The impact of El Niño in Indonesia includes heightened risks of wildfires exacerbated by reduced rainfall and increased temperatures The effect is most dangerous in peatland areas like Riau province and southern Borneo where out-of-control wildfires cause environmental destruction excess deaths and economic losses in the billions of dollars In 2023, fires burned across almost 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) of land and forest, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry This represents a fivefold increase from 2022 but is smaller than the area burned during Indonesia’s previous wildfire crises in 2019 and 2015 In its most recent update, on Feb. 8 Climate Prediction Center noted that the probability of El Niño conditions transitioning to neutral in the April-June quarter was 79% part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service assessed a 55% chance of a La Niña system emerging between June and August That would imply reduced risks of major burns in the second half of this year in much of Southeast Asia data lead for the weather monitoring station at the main airport in Pekanbaru but that conditions on the ground may change in the coming months Bibin added that rainfall distribution in the province can be erratic “We’ll see and update the trend later in March,” Bibin “Will it be La Niña or will it return to El Niño?” Banner image: Smoke ensuing fire in the compressor area of subsidiary PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional’s (PT KPI) 170,000-b/d refinery sited across two locations in Dumai and Sungai Pakning Preliminary results of the investigation indicate the blast and subsequent fire—which was extinguished within minutes of occurring—was caused by a hydrogen gas leak along a 6-in.-long pipeline in the refinery’s compressor area 212-C-2 the operator said in a series of releases the incident—which caused vibrations and loud bangs felt within a 1-km radius—impacted the residential area of Tanjung Palas Dumai or what Pertamina refers to as the buffer zone Pertamina said unidentified repairs to the refinery were scheduled to be completed on Apr with repairs to nearby residential housing slated for completion by Apr With ongoing data collection related to the active investigation still under way Pertamina said it plans to conduct metallurgical laboratory testing on material samples taken from the pipeline to determine whether strength of the pipeline material currently in use remains suitable for service or needs to be replaced the operator said it will also carry out reinforcement works on unidentified surrounding equipment and installations as well as conduct an unidentified review of the buffer zone in July 2023 confirmed the Dumai refinery would continue to operate to ensure fuel supplies for the northern incident which happened on Saturday (Apr 1) in Dumai City Riau province injured nine workers and damaged several buildings in the area It was the third major incident involving Pertamina in under a month following a fire at a fuel storage depot in North Jakarta and another aboard an oil tanker chartered by the firm "PT Kilang Pertamina International (PT KPI) Refinery Unit Dumai apologises for this incident And we will be responsible for the losses incurred in the community," Mr Agustiawan several houses and places of worship - particularly those adjacent to the refinery - suffered damage in the explosion Mr Agustiawan said that a team has been formed Among the measures taken so far include data collection on the losses in the community while a medical team has been deployed to conduct health checks for people in the area "We will also ensure that the national fuel stock the recovery process can run well so that in the next few days the refinery's operational conditions can run parameter and help people to return to their daily life “(We will also) investigate the causes of this accident We will probe into it along with related parties," said Riau Police Chief Inspector General Muhammad Iqbal on Sunday Mr Iqbal was reported as saying that the fire in the incident was extinguished in less than 20 minutes Mr Agustiawan said that refinery operations in the affected unit have been temporarily suspended to ensure security at the location "The causes of the incident remain unknown The team continues to focus on ensuring safe conditions “Pertamina Dumai Refinery also continues to ensure that the community around the refinery is not affected by this accident," said Mr Agustiawan The Saturday explosion came after two separate fires last month at facilities linked to the firm one at a Pertamina fuel storage depot in Plumpang and another on an oil tanker chartered by the company A massive fire broke out on Mar 3 at a fuel storage depot run by Pertamina in Plumpang which led to more than 30 deaths when the fire ripped through a nearby residential area Thousands of people were forced to evacuate when the fire broke out with witnesses likening the fire to a bomb blast after an initial explosion sent panicked locals screaming and fleeing through narrow roads The state-owned firm said a pipe leak had been detected before the fire started The firm has since apologised and one of its directors was removed from his post President Joko Widodo also called on Jakarta's governor and ministers to find a solution to fuel depots located near residential areas to avoid a repeat disaster A separate fire also broke out on Mar 26 on a Pertamina-chartered oil tanker the vessel had 17 crew members on board and was carrying 5,900 kilolitres of fuel when the fire and sustainable solution enabling them to recycle more than 75% of their wastewater stream Envirogen piloted various technologies on-site and selected NX Filtration’s hollow fiber direct nanofiltration (dNF) membranes as the most effective and sustainable solution to remove or reduce key contaminants from the wastewater and enable the reuse at the customer’s facilities The current set-up has a capacity of 45 cubic metres per hour and has been designed in a modular way facilitating efficient future extensions to enlarge the capacity Envirogen and NX Filtration previously worked together on projects related to microfiltration for a beer filtration application and ultrafiltration for a large industrial water treatment project in the UK “We are pleased to expand our cooperation with NX Filtration from previous engagements based on micro- and ultrafiltration to their direct nanofiltration membranes,” said Billy Denyer “This dNF membrane is used as a single-step replacement for multiple process stages The system has a low chemical requirement and delivers significant energy savings making it an excellent choice for surface water treatment waste stream recycling and providing rejection of dissolved solids.” “Having started our cooperation in 2020 based on our micro- and ultrafiltration membranes we are proud to now also supply our most innovative membranes based on direct nanofiltration technology,” added Gerard Ruiter “As such we can contribute to an efficient and sustainable water recycling process for this important project in the UK Water recycling is a very powerful tool in managing companies’ water footprint Globally we experience growing acceptance for this sustainable circular economy principle Our dNF technology is perfectly suited for both municipal and industrial water recycling.” Free access to this content is for qualifying individuals only Corporate and institutional access requires an appropriate license or subscription For more Development Paves the Way for Research Commercialization People’s Forum on Graduation Readiness Held After Vote to Eliminate MCAS 8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports Samantha Shannon’s best-selling novel “The Priory of the Orange Tree” brought readers into a world where magic lies hidden in the fruit of the earth “A Day of Fallen Night,” Shannon has yet again invited us to eat of the not-so-forbidden magic fruit “A Day of Fallen Night,” a striking standalone prequel to “Priory,” interweaves the stories of three women — Tunuva and Dumai — from three wildly different fantastical cultures Yet they are united through their devotion to their loved ones and quests to hunt down the demonic wyrms which threaten their world “A Day of Fallen Night” sometimes struggles with the magnitude of its scope women-led addition to the world of modern epic fantasy “A Day of Fallen Night” may take place in the same world as “The Priory of the Orange Tree,” but it stands by itself Shannon establishes a new cast of characters and a sweeping plotline within the 850 pages of “Fallen Night.” While some might be daunted by the book’s length it is refreshing that “Fallen Night” is a truly self-contained novel Its end vaguely hints at the events of “Priory,” but understanding the novel doesn’t hinge upon familiarity with the plot of “Priory.” the pacing within this standalone novel isn’t perfect “A Day of Fallen Night” suffers from a disjointed flow that makes following its characters confusing Shannon attempts to connect various locations but keeping the piece chronological requires awkward jumps in time and location Some long journeys are summarized in one paragraph making the story feel unevenly sluggish or breakneck While the central plot can become confusing the individual themes of the novel are much easier to follow The novel brings into focus an idea that is familiar to us all: love “A Day of Fallen Night” is an ode to love in its many forms — whether it be between family members Shannon grounds the magical world of the novel in strong individual relationships that showcase the connective power of love Glorian battles the world for her unborn child and Dumai sacrifices everything for her family and friends Shannon also champions inclusivity in the novel representing relationships between women and between men Additionally, the overall diversity and strength of female characters in the novel is impressive.
