shared information about the increased status of Mount Iya
The community and visitors or tourists are advised not to approach the area and not to do any activities
within a 3-kilometer radius from the active crater of Mount Iya
avoid approaching the gas seepage holes around the crater to avoid the potential danger of toxic gases," said Wafid
Wafid explained that the eruption character of Mount Iya is generally concentrated in the main crater in the form of magmatic eruptions
and lava flows accompanied by collapses at the summit
Wafid added that there are cracks that have the potential to cause landslides
He mentioned that the cracks are developing around the active crater of Mount Iya
"These cracks are likely to cause large landslides towards the sea if there is a upcoming eruption of Mount Iya," he said
The Geological Agency noted that during the visual observations from October 1 to November 4
the monitoring of white and gray smoke originated from the main crater of Mount Iya with thin and high intensity ranging from 10-300 meters from the mountain peak
Visual observation using drones on November 5
observed thin gray crater smoke with a height of about 50 meters from the peak of Mount Iya
seismic activity observations during the period from October 1 to November 4 were dominated by harmonic tremors
A significant increase in seismic activity in the form of deep volcanic tremors has been monitored since last August
This significant increase in seismic activity indicates an increase in pressure inside Mount Iya due to the increased magmatic activity
or the migration of magma from deep depths to shallow depths
"This triggers the appearance of shallow earthquakes that can cause eruptions," said Wafid
The Geological Agency recorded tremors starting from October 16
marking the movement or increase in magma pressure towards the surface
"One should be wary if significant tectonic earthquakes are recorded around Mount Iya because they have the potential to affect the volcanic activity of Mount Iya," said Wafid
Mount Iya has a height of 637 meters above sea level
Mount Iya is a stratovolcano with eruption history recorded since 1671
The interval between eruptions is estimated between 1 year and 60 years
The Geological Agency has placed the observatory post for Mount Iya in Tewejangga

serves as a hub for these skilled artisans
a sister publication of the Jakarta Globe, recently had the opportunity to visit Nuamuri Village and witness firsthand the meticulous process behind crafting these traditional textiles
It was revealed that creating a single piece of kain tenun using natural dyes can span several months
"The authentic ones can take up to seven months due to our other activities
Each kain tenun spans approximately 3 meters in length and 78 centimeters in width
The duration of the weaving process is also dictated by the complexity of the motifs
The process depends on creating beautiful and intricate designs
especially with natural dyes," Mensi said
NTT's handwoven textiles are categorized into several types based on their production techniques: ikat weaving
Ikat involves creating patterns by tying threads. Buna weaving technique involves weaving pre-dyed threads to form colorful and captivating motifs
Lotis or songket is characterized by dark base colors such as black
The weaving process mirrors buna weaving but is distinguished by its traditional color palette
artisans in NTT use natural dyes derived from plants such as tauk
many weavers have adopted chemical dyes due to their advantages
These dyes accelerate the production process
the motifs on kain tenun serve as cultural identifiers
indicating the wearer's origin by reflecting distinct tribal or regional characteristics
These motifs embody the community's way of life and forge a strong emotional bond with the local culture
NTT residents take immense pride in wearing textiles from their own ethnic group
feeling uncomfortable wearing those from other tribes
Crafting kain tenun involves a meticulous process
starting with spinning kapok (silk-cotton tree) into thread
The threads are then stiffened with a concentrated tamarind seed boil before weaving can commence
Due to the labor-intensive nature of production
kain tenun is priced in the millions of rupiah range
One showcased kain tenun featured a black base with reddish-brown motifs
including the inscription "ine pare" (mother of rice)
a mythological symbol of rice's origin in the Lio community
"The price starts at Rp 3.5 million ($216)
but some pieces exceed Rp 5 million due to the use of kapok-spun threads and natural root-based dyes
which require months of soaking to achieve these results," Mensi concluded

In front of sa'o there are rows of stone tombs inhabited by ancestors
The grave is still being maintained to this day
The age of the tombs ranges from tens to hundreds of years
Every family knows who the occupants of the stone graves in front of the traditional house are

TEHRAN-The Persian translation of the fantasy novel “The Neverending Story” by German writer Michael Ende has been released in the Iranian book market
Mehrdad Bazyari has translated the book and Hermes Publication has brought it out in 446 pages
This epic work of the imagination has captured the hearts of millions of readers worldwide since it was first published in 1979
Its special story within a story is an irresistible invitation for readers to become part of the book itself
The story begins with a lonely boy named Bastian and the strange book that draws him into the beautiful but doomed world of Fantastica
Only a human can save this enchanted place by giving its ruler
But the journey to her tower leads through lands of dragons
he must find the courage to face unspeakable foes and the mysteries of his own heart
“The Neverending Story” has been translated into 36 languages
and sold more than eight million copies worldwide
The novel was adapted into a film of the same name in 1984
ending at the point where Bastian enters Fantastica (renamed "Fantasia" in the film)
Michael Ende (1929-1995) was a German writer of fantasy and children's literature
He was one of the most popular and famous German authors of the 20th century
mostly due to the enormous success of his children's books.
Ende’s writing could be described as a surreal mixture of reality and fantasy
The reader is often invited to take a more interactive role in the story
and the worlds in his books often mirror our reality
using fantasy to bring light to the problems of an increasingly technological modern society
Ende's works have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more than 20 million copies
and have been adapted into motion pictures
By Sarah McCarry
Bastian Balthazar Bux is a “little boy of ten or twelve,” friendless
and referred to by his peers as “screwball” for his habit of telling himself stories out loud
Bastian escapes a group of bullies by ducking into a bookshop
whose proprietor happens to be reading a mysterious book
Ensnared by its title—“Here was just what he had dreamed of
what he had longed for ever since the passion for books had taken hold of him: A story that never ended!”—Bastian steals the book when the owner goes to answer the telephone
entering into outlawry and one of the most indelible journeys through the mystical in children’s literature
The outlines of Bastian’s adventures will be familiar to anyone who has seen the 1984 cult classic film made from Ende’s novel
Bastian hides with his newfound treasure in the attic of his school
The book he has stolen opens with a crisis: the Childlike Empress
the ruler of a magical land called Fantastica
has fallen gravely ill with a mysterious sickness that threatens her life and the health of Fantastica itself
for the Childlike Empress is “the center of all life in Fantastica.” A Fantastican boy about Bastian’s age
is chosen for the all-important quest of finding a savior to cure the Childlike Empress and restore the realm
Fantastica is also imperiled by the spreading presence of the Nothing
a metastasizing emptiness that swallows up landscapes and peoples alike: “not a bare stretch
something that made you feel you had gone blind.”
Atreyu must first traverse the perilous Swamps of Sadness
Artax is so weighed down by sorrow that he drowns before Atreyu’s eyes
Artax’s death in the film version famously scarred the childhoods of an entire generation; the scene is so upsetting that director Wolfgang Petersen was still countering a persistent rumor that the horse actor died during filming twenty years after the movie came out
both of whom worked with a trainer for months to prepare for the scene
expressing his terrible grief to a bewildered Atreyu
“I can’t stand the sadness anymore,” he cries
“I want to die!” Atreyu tries to give Artax Auryn
insisting that Atreyu does not have permission to transfer the amulet to another person and must carry on alone
he is increasingly implicated in Atreyu’s quest
He is as devastated as Atreyu by the death of Artax; he seems at times to even see what Atreyu sees
to experience what Atreyu experiences as if he is actually present in the Neverending Story
he cries out a warning to Atreyu—and his cry is heard in the pages of the book.
Atreyu reaches the oracle Uyulala with the help of the luckdragon Falkor
he must pass through a series of magical gates
The reflection he sees in the mirror is unmistakably Bastian in his attic: “a fat little boy with a pale face… sitting on a pile of mats
and he was wrapped in frayed grey blankets.” And when Atreyu loses his memories as he passes through the final gate
it’s Bastian’s voice once more that crosses over into Fantastica and persuades him to keep going
the Childlike Empress must be given a new name
The catch: no Fantastican can give it to her
but no human has visited Fantastica in a long time
thinks that he would gladly help the Childlike Empress if he were able to; he could dream up the most beautiful new name imaginable
if somebody would only show him how to get to Fantastica
But despite increasing evidence to the contrary
he is sure The Neverending Story is just a book
He is afraid to make a fool of himself by asserting that he is truly being called into Fantastica by its pages
persuades Falkor to fly him to the edge of Fantastica to look for its mysterious savior
He falls from Falkor’s back and loses Auryn while flying over the sea
washing up on a lonely beach in a strange country on the verge of annihilation by the Nothing.
in one of the more extraordinary passages of this extraordinary book
a werewolf who has been chained up by the princess of the city after she discovered he is in service to the Nothing and was sent to thwart the Empress’s chosen hero from completing his mission and finding Fantastica’s savior
The witch-princess and her ghostly entourage have gone to throw themselves into the Nothing
Gmork is the only creature in Fantastica who can tell him where to find its savior.
that compels Fantasticans to leap into it; but when they are swallowed whole by the Nothing
they emerge into the world of humans as lies:
You’ll be like a contagious disease that makes humans blind
so they can no longer distinguish between reality and illusion [… You] will become delusions in the minds of human beings
despairing thoughts when there is no reason to despair
… [Y]ou too will be a nameless servant of power
Maybe you’ll help them persuade people to buy things they don’t need
or hold beliefs that make them easy to handle
big things will be done in the human world with your help
It is here that Bastian at last realizes the interconnection between Fantastica and his own world
that the world he lives in is as ill as Atreyu’s
that the people around him have become cynical and resigned to misery
when he himself “never stopped believing in mysteries and miracles,” that the work ahead is to bridge the divide between the world of the fantastical and the world of the everyday; in short
to envision the utopian and to live as though it is already present
It will take more effort on the part of both Atreyu—who survives his encounter with Gmork and is rescued by Falkor—and the Childlike Empress herself
Bastian is brave enough to give the Childlike Empress her new name
The movie—which Michael Ende famously loathed (“A gigantic melodrama of kitsch
going so far as to sue its producers in an attempt to halt its production—ends here
with a rousing and extremely American sequence in which Bastian brings Falkor Earth-side to chase his bullies into the very dumpster where they once forced him to hide.
But the book does not let either Bastian or the reader off so easily
Bastian does give the Childlike Empress a new name
and is transported to her side in Fantastica
where she gives him Auryn—and the task of rebuilding Fantastica by reimagining it
He realizes that inside the amulet is inscribed the motto DO WHAT YOU WISH
which Bastian interprets to mean gives him “permission
to do whatever he pleased.” Bastian’s wishes—to be handsome
creating adversaries for him to conquer and quests for him to triumph over
decides to assault the Childlike Empress’s citadel and declare himself emperor of Fantastica
Atreyu and Falkor stop his coronation ceremony
resulting in a battle that destroys the Ivory Tower and sends Bastian fleeing into the wilderness after striking Atreyu down with his sword
His long pilgrimage leaves him with only the memory of his father and of his own name
he realizes that his one true wish is to love
and he gives up his final memories of himself.
promising to complete Bastian’s unfinished stories in Fantastica so that he can return to his own world and begin the work of healing the divide between the everyday and the imaginary
where the two finally confront their shared grief over the loss of Bastian’s mother
returns to the bookstore where he stole The Neverending Story
and learns that the bookstore’s proprietor himself once journeyed to Fantastica.
I was around Bastian’s age when I first found The Neverending Story in the tall
shadowy stacks of the grown-ups’ section of my local library
suspected of social irredeemability by my peers; like him
I was instantly seduced by the book’s title–a neverending story
with the desperate desire to inhabit a world more pleasurable than the one into which I had been born and was required to endure; books were the one thing that allowed me to forget myself and my ordinary life
depressingly unalleviated by magic and heroic quests and dragons
the edition I found was a beautiful object
a hardcover first American edition printed in red and green ink–red for the parts of the book set in the human world
green for Fantastica—whose chapters began with Roswitha Quadflieg’s beautifully illustrated ornamental initials
I fell in love with The Neverending Story in the way only a child can come to love a book
dazzled by its variegated visions of spectacular creatures and a wondrous parallel world
tantalizingly close to our own for any child courageous enough to reach it
I returned to the book many times over the years
but it was not until relatively recently that I thought to learn more about its author
His father was the surrealist painter Edgar Ende; his mother
was an autodidact and orphan who read widely in philosophy
and who herself began to paint later in her life
where Edgar Ende’s career briefly flourished
but the changing political climate sent the family into poverty
Edgar Ende was labeled a “degenerate” artist by the National Socialist regime and banned from painting altogether
Many of his colleagues and friends were arrested and disappeared
The Endes became dependent on what little Luise could earn
Michael Ende was an academic failure as a child
and his humiliation plunged him into such despair that he contemplated suicide.
The family’s difficulties were compounded by the devastating pressures of the Nazi regime and the Second World War
The Endes managed to keep Michael out of the Hitler Youth by sending him to a military riding school
but he was drafted into the Waffen-SS in 1944 along with all other boys of his age
Michael Ende had already witnessed the 1943 bombing of Hamburg
which occurred while he was in the city visiting an uncle
“It was as though the world was coming to an end,” he said later
in a 1983 interview with German Playboy (!)
“I still dream about it now—how we found charred corpses shrivelled to the size of babies
I can still see the army of totally helpless people wandering through the ruins as though trapped in a labyrinth
One of them was carrying a table on his back
which was probably the only thing he could save.” Michael Ende tore up his draft papers and joined a Bavarian resistance unit as a courier until the end of the war
Ende was profoundly influenced by his schooling under the Nazi regime and his experiences during the war
His body of work is not without its flaws; his first book for children
has a Black boy as its central character—nearly unheard-of in 1960s Germany—and is filled with references to the horrors of fascism and its attendant racisms and xenophobias
But to say that its visual depictions of the titular Jim
by the prolific illustrator Franz Josef Tripp
would be unpublishable today is an understatement
are unsubtly modeled on the Indigenous tribes of the Great Plains of North America
reflecting a long-standing and troubling German infatuation with stereotypical images of Native Americans; Atreyu himself
strays into the territory of the noble savage
(Atreyu is played in the movie by Noah Hathaway
a white child actor with a liberal application of foundation.) A number of Ende’s views about the essential nature of women and men and heterosexual relationships
even if he may have struggled to imagine its potential subjects as people with bodies and experiences different from his own
He resisted the idea that his work should be interpreted through a political lens
but he was explicit in interviews: “In the ancient cultural places of the world there was a temple
In every modern big city there is a bank building in its center… I have tried to depict this as a kind of demon cult
where money is something to be prayed to like something sacred
[…] It has the character of everlastingness
But if there is anything that is just a purely man-made thing
then it’s money.” And elsewhere: “The victims of our systems are the peoples of the Third World and nature
In order to invest money as profitably as possible
this growth does not come out of nothing.”
children frequently figure as agents of resistance
in large part because it is particularly difficult to persuade children that their pleasurable activities—play
the construction and exploration of alternative futures—are wasteful
(This idea is fully explored in his 1973 novel Momo
in which a little girl does battle against a grim army of cigar-chomping men in grey who steal time from the unsuspecting adults in her small village
The adults are convinced to enact legislation forbidding unstructured play
arguing that children who are allowed leisure and imagination “become morally depraved and take to crime
The authorities must take steps to round them up
They must build centers where the youngsters can be molded into useful and efficient members of society.” Momo alone remains resistant to the men in grey
and is ultimately able to defeat them by opening their vault and freeing the stolen time.) Fantastica is dependent on the real world
because Fantasticans cannot create new stories; the real world is dependent on Fantastica
because without the world of the creative imaginary
human beings are reduced to cogs in the machinery of capital
deluded by the Nothing and its servants’ misappropriation of the imaginary for the purposes of political repression and senseless consumption
Ende was no stranger to fascist deployment of “fears where there is nothing to fear” and regimes that come to power with the understanding that “when it comes to controlling human beings
there is no better instrument than lies.”
Bastian is reminded insistently that his ego is the greatest threat to his own self-realization and the safety of Fantastica
When the centaur Cairon first gives Atreyu the Childlike Empress’s amulet—as Bastian reads along—he explains that “‘Auryn gives you great power… but you must not make use of it
For the Childlike Empress herself never makes use of her power
but whatever comes your way you must never interfere
because from this moment on your own opinion ceases to count
just as it is in the eyes of the Childlike Empress
never judge.” It is when Bastian forgets this equilibrium
when he privileges his own selfish desires—to be seen as a wise
instead of to share in the future of both worlds—that he causes tremendous harm
The Neverending Story lends itself easily to a Buddhist reading; Michael Ende was himself fascinated by Zen Buddhism and spent a considerable amount of time in Japan
Bastian must reconcile himself to the deep
life-altering grief of his mother’s death; he must come to peace with himself and learn to love and be loved as he is
flawed and imperfect and still deserving of care; he must set aside the impulses of his ego in favor of more meaningful and mutually dependent relationships with other beings
But the relationship between Fantastica and the human world has more expansive tools to offer than just a metaphorized exploration of the journey to individual enlightenment
we live surrounded by the degradations of the Nothing
The extraordinary disconnect between the discourse of progress and the lived realities of millions of people
even in the wealthiest nation on earth—an ostensible democracy actively funding and abetting an ongoing genocide
a nation where entire cities have no access to drinkable water
where schools are closing or their libraries are being stripped
where huge swathes of the population have no access to life-saving medical care or any medical care at all
where the right to simply exist in public is denied to trans and queer and unhoused people
a nation with the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world and the highest child incarceration rate on earth—is a nearly unbearable space to inhabit
We are living in a time of uncontrollable ecological catastrophe
set in motion by a handful of board members and shareholders well aware of the consequences of their greed
that is already rendering whole swathes of the planet unlivable and that will continue to metastasize into unaccountable suffering disproportionately borne by the people least responsible for it
This is a tenuous existence even for those of us who still have access to the exponential privileges of certain kinds of citizenship in certain kinds of countries—those of us born
Cruelty is not a byproduct of the system we live in; it is a constitutive element
We are meant to be productive in these conditions
We are certainly not meant to consider what an ethical life might look like in a world where it is literally impossible to survive—to eat
to make a life—without consuming goods produced under circumstances of near-slavery at best and
as a result of ecocide and extraordinary violence
When we choose to be aware of these conditions
we are tear-gassed and beaten by police and incarcerated
We are told that our grief is unreasonable
that we are undeserving of even being seen or heard–I am thinking here of the indelible images of people on their way into the 2024 Democratic convention in Chicago covering their ears and laughing at pro-Palestinian protestors
We may become disoriented by the realization that many who share this present with us are willing to overlook the bloodthirsty viciousness of empire–or may go so far as to actively embrace and abet it–even as they insist they are doing otherwise
a condition which many of us may come to inhabit
is presented to us as a moral failure of which we should be ashamed.
But I would like to propose an alternative theory of despair: despair
and grief is the only reasonable response to the world in which we are currently living
which means there is something we are grieving; which means there is something we have seen to be grievable
Something we have recognized as real and present
We have come to the abyss and named it for what it is
Despair says: the house is burning down and everyone and everything we love is inside the house
We will lose so much that we love; we have already experienced losses so enormous as to unmake us
Fantasticans who fling themselves into the Nothing
may become “despairing thoughts where there is no reason to despair,” but in fact we have many reasons to despair
there is no reason we cannot navigate that failure together and imagine its alternatives in community
How we grieve shapes how we reimagine the world
let us learn not how to bear them but how to remake the conditions that bring them into being
“and entire populations are being forced to bear it anyway”—it can also be the recognition that we have nothing left to lose
The loss of hope is in its own way the ultimate detachment from the demands of the ego
Hopelessness becomes our kinship and our connection: across borders
across the differences of our bodies and our lives and our experiences
we are still capable of resistance and insistence: resistance to what is
the possible is still ours to inscribe upon the present
We can return to the swamp in which Artax drowns
unprotected by the shelter of the Childlike Empress’s talisman
It is Artax’s grief in the face of unimaginable suffering
and it is the shared grief of Bastian and Atreyu
that is their first step on the journey together to a newly imagined world
one in which the ultimate guide is not the pursuit of individual happiness but of love and collective liberation
but a place of transition between the world of water and the world of earth
Think for a moment of the many plants and animals that make a home in that suspended zone
And I am arguing here for the capacious “we” of Fantastica
the millions of people who have already been enduring apocalypse for a long time now
ever-expanding “we,” a “we” where all beings are equal and cherished
and let that wish be a doing that inhabits your every action.
It is not Bastian’s imagination alone that sets him apart from his peers; it is his capacity to name the possible and his willingness to work through the fear of recognizing his part in the future-making project of the story he has entered
for those of us raised in the embrace of empire
which is that the system in which we live protects the very few at the great expense of the many
pulled into the depths of the Nothing by the death wish of empire
is more than just unbearable; it is the end of any future in which freedom exists for anyone.
He reflects on the trespasses he has committed against his comrades and is consumed by shame
where the buildings are “jumbled every which way without rhyme or reason” and the inhabitants are “dressed as if they had lost the power to distinguish between clothing and objects intended for other purposes.” His attempts to speak with the townspeople are met with confusion
who informs him that he has reached the City of the Old Emperors—a squalid
All the human beings who succeeded in crowning themselves Emperor of Fantastica lose themselves completely in the same instant and are transported to the city
because they themselves can’t change anymore.” Bastian understands that he has been given a tremendous gift; Atreyu has thwarted his desire to conquer
and thus saved him from the fate of the other humans who have attempted to assert their own will over the beings of Fantastica
For the Childlike Empress herself does not rule; she “was far more than a ruler
She was something entirely different… She had never used force or made use of her own power
She never issued commands and she never judged anyone… In her eyes all her subjects were equal
She was the center of all life in Fantastica.” The Childlike Empress’s world is one without borders and thus free of the violence required to maintain them
It is up to us to imagine their alternatives
To live as though the future we are dreaming is already named
To be unafraid to answer its call in the dark
“And joy filled him from head to foot,” writes Ende
when Bastian has finally realized his greatest wish is love
“The joy of living and the joy of being himself… If he had been free to choose
Because now he knew that there were thousands and thousands of forms of joy in the world
but that all were essentially one and the same
The Reactor newsletter is the best way to catch up on the world of science fiction

I will make them come alive before your eyes.”

Andere Länder versuchen also nicht wirklich
In solchen Phasen denke ich oft an Will Rogers
Was raten Sie Investoren unter diesen Rahmenbedingungen

the final installment in a trilogy of what can only be described as some of black metal’s finest titles
2021’s Tanker som rir natten was hailed as a flawless record
received a coveted Spellemann / “Norwegian Grammy.” I rightly rated that instant classic a 10/10 at Metal Injection and repeatedly sang its praises
as perhaps the first apolitical and sane writer
the fact that Djevel’s Naa skrider natten sort is one of the GREATEST black metal albums of ALL TIME is not up for debate.”
I believe the very first to recognize the brilliance of Djevel’s current trilogy
certainly the loudest constant advocate for them has been leading music historian
one of the most important figures in the scene
we send our hails to Rødland for always being ahead of the curve and steering ears in the right direction
whereas so many mags are busy pointing listeners toward unoriginal trash or whoever paid for ad space
With Natt til ende finally on our speakers
we can affirm that it represents yet another unblemished masterpiece
Natt til ende could only be the epic triumph we were certain it would be and more
Rarely have I been so sure that a title would equate to a flawless scorcher
but Ciekals’ nomination serves as an indication of the reality that Djevel is a band whose brilliance cannot be denied even by those who do not necessarily understand black metal
Ciekals penned the following of his newest opus: “This last chapter is my manifest of the final ending of christianity and death of ‘Jesus’
Naturally this also lifts the idea and concept of forces christianity calls evil
The same forces I would call natural and human
They may be described as in a dream or in a more harsh speech.”
who places among metal’s very best drummers
has been part of Djevel since 2017 and first appeared with them on Blant svarte graner (2018)
Faust wows us with all of the dazzling precision and finesse that we expect of him
his contributions come across as highly refreshing in light of their impeccable character
While many national treasures dull with time
Ciekals and Faust have been joined by one of the genre’s top vocalists
also provides his expertise on bass: the venerable Mr
Grenjar (We don’t say “ex” here because Rødland informed us of the joyous news that there will be more to come…)
Kvitrim is regarded as a key architect behind the internationally beloved Nidrosian Black Metal movement.
though this fearsome entity has always included a cast of esteemed and successful permanent musicians
whether Koldbrann and now Craft’s Mannevond
continued on with them in concert after his studio departure; Hjorth and Erlend Hjelvik
famed mostly for their past achievements with Kvelertak; or ex-Gehenna and ex-Enslaved’s Dirge Rep
From Mare’s Nosophoros to ex-Sarkom’s Eirik Renton
who just might have partaken in Norway’s pre-Eurovision competition as a
Djevel has boasted incredible pieces of strictly live artillery
A word to the unenlightened: The offerings to which Willem has lent his excellence behind the console have earned 10 Spellemann nominations and 3 wins
Willem is yet another one of Norway’s best
each of Djevel’s veteran artists gives a stellar performance
The merits of their work are glaringly self-evident
This number is surprisingly accessible for an uncompromising outfit
Djevel is of such a caliber that no one can deny their excellence
Ciekals possesses all the worth of a classical composer
he brings honor to Norway while summoning to mind all of the most gorgeous and majestic paintings of Scandinavian nature in its moonlit splendor
Intoxicating melodies and addictive riffs transport us
Ciekals allows his songs to have the ideal amount of breathing room in the right spaces
This king of his craft reigns with complete authority
he also lets out truly bestial screams and growls that convey the truth of abysmal agony and despair
“En vitner efter kommer” benefits from a sprinkling of vocalizations that resemble those found within the realm of suicidal black metal
Another such brief moment arises after calming chanting on the last track
thus reminding us of the meaning of the nice Norwegian word “Selvhat” and providing a nice contrast to when Kvitrim’s tone on that opus is declamatory
(Let it be known that the sprawling “Natt til ende” is a very special and magical piece that actually made its premiere live on November 11
at Oslo’s Parkteatret.) Kvitrim breathes both fire and ice
and “Jesu lidelse” contains some theatrical vocals that
which arise every now and then on the record add much depth to the music
“I skovaandsfavn,” is a piano piece that commences with the rustling of wind and features other atmospheric touches
the subtlety of the effects is appreciated
We must note that this composition is preceded by the album’s second single
“Under nattens fane i fandens prakt,” which proves extremely fun and catchy
despite its gravity and more somber components
fans abound who have stated that Djevel is the most exciting act in black metal right now
I have always suffered from the compulsive need to likewise champion the timeless art of the fabulous Sir Niklas Kvarforth and his Høstsol co-founder
the pioneering hero Tor-Helge “Cernunnus” Skei
Aftermath Music unleashed Manes’ lethally magnificent EP Pathei Mathos as well as the full-length Slow Motion Death Sequence Remixed
they released Manes’ miraculous two-song single Young Skeleton (2020)
has morphed into an experimental entity that stands beyond all stylistic labels
they are regarded by the likes of Sir Kvarforth as having been the best in the genre for their unsurpassed early victories — Cern continues where he left off in Manii and astounds us with his black metal supremacy by way of Syning as well
Manes has always reflected the highest level of genius
we can safely assert: Aftermath has turned out three of the top offerings of 2024 and only partners with the greatest
make sure to keep an eye out for Kvitrim’s new supergroup with Cern: Diabolus
Their debut is sure to amount to another masterwork
(Purchase Djevel’s Natt til ende from Aftermath Music here.)
“Little Lord Fentanyl,” featuring a guest performance from Maynard James Keenan (Tool
The track marks the band’s first release since 2022’s Conspiranoid EP
The single also introduces new drummer John..
Sleep Token have unveiled “Damocles,” the final single from their upcoming album
Sleep Token will embark on their first-ever sold-out U.S
Linkin Park have shared a visualizer for their latest single
“Unshatter.” The song is one of two new tracks featured on the upcoming deluxe edition of their comeback album From Zero

The art of the internationally renowned stage and costume designer Anna Viebrock is mainly at home in the theatre
Now she is creating an installation at the Skulpturenhalle
in which parts of a stage set and her models play a central role
Since studying at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts in the 1970s
Anna Viebrock has developed her own distinctive way of intertwining space
for which she has received much acclaim in the world of the theatre
her approach can be appreciated in a solo art exhibition
Viebrock’s unmistakable stage sets are spatial collages whose naturalism is deceptive
unusual combinations of architectural elements and “found” objects that tell their own stories
her hybrid spatial inventions unfold a great power
In January 2024, Professors Willy Shih and Mike Toffel led 45 HBS MBA students on site visits to witness the energy transition and innovative sustainable production activities throughout Denmark and the Netherlands
in the second year of their Immersive Field Course (IFC)
This is one of nine student essays that highlight their reflections
After spending the morning at the Royal Flora Holland auction house
we traveled from Amsterdam to Monster where we were welcomed to Van den Ende Rozen by two of the three brothers who run the company
It was clear from the start that the family dynamic of the brothers creates a playful
and competitive work environment as each brother is responsible for a different area of the business
We started our tour of the facility by walking into the warm
brightly lit 4.5-hectare greenhouse where the company grows its Red Naomi roses
the greenhouse’s production team works on cutting and pruning the roses
while the afternoons are focused on processing and packaging
the rose plants need to be pruned or cut very often
it takes six to seven weeks for a plant to grow a new flower
The total capacity of the 4.5-hectare greenhouse is 400 roses/m² per year
The growers use a mix of extensive experience and technology to efficiently grow a high-quality product
there are 17 different environmental sensors that track everything from temperature to light intensity and humidity
the flowers are handled differently depending on the tastes of the customer
some regions such as Scandinavia prefer their flowers to have more natural greenery so they have more control over the final appearance of mixed bouquets
Van den Ende Rozen sells 65% of their flowers directly to customers such as grocers and convenience stores
while the rest is sent to auction houses like Royal Flora Holland
The price at the auction house determines the price for direct sales as well
While it’s difficult to create a consumer-recognized brand of flowers
Van den Ende Rozen still strives to produce the highest quality of roses for all to enjoy
the Van den Ende brothers touched upon multiple aspects of sustainable agriculture that have been integrated into their greenhouse
50% of their greenhouse lighting has been transitioned from incandescent lighting to LEDs
which emit a light spectrum that is optimized for rose growing
The transition has reduced energy use by 50% but has also caused a reduction in the amount of heat emitted into the greenhouse
Natural gas heating has been employed to compensate
adding additional pressure to the operating costs of the business due to price increases because of the Russia-Ukraine war
The Van den Ende brothers shared their plans to implement geothermal heat pumps for the greenhouse within the next two years in order to reduce and then eliminate the use of natural gas
50% of the water used in rose cultivation is captured
The Van den Ende brothers also continue to explore ways to reduce the use of chemical pesticides
They have already transitioned 90% of their greenhouse to biological pest control systems
wherein living organisms that are natural enemies of invasive insects are distributed throughout the rose crop in order to prevent infestations and damage to the flowers
This number is expected to increase to 100% nature-based pest control as EU legislation moves to eliminate the use of chemical pesticides within the next decade
several cats live in the greenhouse to control the mice population
The company extends its commitment to sustainability throughout its entire supply chain
This includes employing electric cars for harvesting roses and procuring residual carbon dioxide for the greenhouses from a Shell refinery in Rotterdam
During the transition from gas-based heating to geothermal energy
the company also buys green power for their existing 15MW electric cogeneration facility
Interesting Learnings & Future Challenges
Examining this century-old family business
we noted its adaptability to market shifts
the shift to specializing in roses was compelling
The Van den Ende brothers explained how optimization for a single crop enhanced both yield and sustainability
auction houses are considering implementing systems to reveal flower carbon footprints that could reshape rose demand
adding an environmental factor to consumer choices
In discussions with the Van den Ende brothers
the timeline for integrating geothermal energy emerged
The goal is to commission the plant in 2024
but the facility's construction is controlled by the local government
The geothermal installation shares infrastructure with the neighboring plant
This highlights a crucial aspect of sustainable tech transition: it's not only about technology and costs but also about policy and government support
The interplay between private ambitions and regulations impacts the pace of embracing sustainability
Anthonie Vanden Ende’s call to ministry came very early in his life
He responded willingly and ably and is remembered for pastoring with gentle conversations about eternal matters
Vanden Ende lived through World War II as a teenager
After graduating from seminary at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 1954
he served a church in the tiny farming village of Munnekeburen
followed by a year of service in the Royal Dutch Army
he pastored Brooks (Alta.) CRC and then moved his family to serve Grace CRC in Welland Junction
he served Fredericton (N.B.) CRC where he found “Dominee” or “Reverend” Vanden Ende “didn’t really fit with the Maritime vibe,” his family said
Pastor Tony went on to serve Westmount CRC (now Compass Community Church) in Strathroy
The Vanden Endes retired to Strathroy in 1995 where they enjoyed good health
Predeceased by a granddaughter in 2002 and his first wife
Vanden Ende is survived by his second wife

Indonesian investigators are probing a serious incident involving a Citilink ATR 72-600 which hit an airport fence on landing
The turboprop (PK-GJR) was arriving at Ende airport after a service from Halim
states that the aircraft “collided with the airport fence” during its approach to Ende’s runway 27
Ende is a city in East Nusa Tenggara province and the airport is situated adjacent to the coast
with a fence located about 100m from the runway 27 threshold
The aircraft subsequently touched down and taxied to the apron
but it has no details regarding any damage to the aircraft
Citilink acquired the turboprop from parent company Garuda Indonesia in 2019
Garuda originally took delivery of the aircraft four years ago

In her large-format acrylic paintings and drawings
Lunita-July Dorn (*1999) creates dynamic visual worlds that oscillate between surreal narrative and documentary reflection
Her works are poetic interweavings of personal memories and artistic expression and reveal a haunting
Dorn seduces with an unmistakably loose painting style: broad
energetic brushstrokes meet subtle details that interweave the banal and the poetic
While Dorn's earlier works tend to explore fictitious scenarios in which the artist is the protagonist in imaginary spaces
her latest works are dedicated to concrete memories
Her method is radically intuitive: without any preliminary sketches
she begins by spontaneously laying out a figure on the canvas and builds a world of colour
traces of constant overpainting and revision lend the works a vibrant liveliness
Her pictorial language moves between the expressive gesture and an introspective love of detail - a harmonious dissonance that invites viewers to linger and explore.Following her participation in the group exhibitions ‘Big City Baby’ at ZAK - Centre for Contemporary Centre for Contemporary Art
and ‘CHERRIES ON TOP’ at Galerie Judith Andreae (2023)
her works have been presented in international contexts
A highlight was the exhibition at Palazzo Bembo on the occasion of the Venice Biennale 2024
which focussed exclusively on female positions
Dorn was part of the comprehensive group exhibition ‘Gegen den Strich - GEN Z in der Kunst’ at Sacrow Castle near Potsdam. This February marks Lunita-July Dorn's first solo exhibition at Galerie Judith Andreae
**WARNING: Contains full spoilers for Grotesquerie season 1**
Say what you want about Ryan Murphy shows, but they're never boring. In fact, they often go out of their way to surprise and shock with some of the most audacious twists you'll ever see on screen. Knowing that, you'd think it would be tough to pull the rug out from under us anymore, yet Grotesquerie
did exactly that at the end of episode 7 with the wildest twist of all
viewers followed Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) as she worked with Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond) to investigate hideous murders in their local area
the pair battled their personal demons too
struggled to stay strong while her husband
lay in the hospital in a coma he couldn't wake up from
That means everything that happened up until that point was just a dream
real life starts to reflect the dreams she experienced during the coma
does Grotesquerie finally reveal who the actual killer is
Does Lois finally get the answers she needs
The finale begins as these things so often do: with the makings of a throuple
Lois returns home to find Marshall and Cherry Redd (Lesley Manville) with drinks and an offer she can't refuse
Redd then reveals that she knows all about Marshall sleeping around
which comes to a head later when his class is interrupted by Megan (Micaela Diamond) and Gale (Brooke Smith)
who arrest him on sexual assault allegations made by one of his students
Ed Laclan (Travis M Kelce) takes advantage of him at his lowest point – inviting him to a men's group that helped turn things around for him
the men's group in question is actually a men's rights group who push back against pronouns
and basically any world where women are treated as equals
Dr Charlie Mayhew (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Lois's therapists are there too
Lois goes to one of her therapists in fear that this reality might not be real either
Who's to say this world isn't just another layer of her coma dream
a rare brain disorder where the patient believes themselves to be dead when they're not
Next she claims that Charlie had orgies in her room while she was trapped in her coma
and that he even impregnated another unconscious patient in the same hospital
That's why he was such a horny beast in her dreams
The twists keep coming when Lois returns to her motel room and discovers that all the evidence collected regarding Justin Blake's (Spenser Granese) death has vanished
especially after Lois suspiciously saw her hanging out with Glorious McKall (Lillias White)
When Lois suggests that Grotesquerie must work in medicine because the killer had access to her files
Dr Witticomb flips that around and argues that Lois is probably the murderer instead
Does this mean that the good doctor is a not-so-good doctor
this doesn't help Lois after she ends up getting thrown into a psychiatric ward
Megan visits and admits that she lied about what happened to Justin
conspiring with Glorious to clean up the evidence because Megan needed help regarding an even bigger crime that involved victims they both know
Lois arrives at the crime scene to discover Charlie is dead
He's been crucified for reasons not super clear other than the fact that religious imagery has tied into the entire series
The rest of the victims are mostly unnamed men aside from one
who just so happens to be the student who accused Marshall of sexual assault earlier on in the same episode
Lois has figured out exactly who the killer is
Lois says she'll tell her co-workers in an hour when they meet again at her old office
we don't have another hour because that's where the episode ends
Holding back the killer's identity here at the end might be even more shocking than episode 7's big twist (and it's definitely more cruel)
It's also pretty ballsy given that season 2 hasn't even been confirmed yet
But maybe that's what Murphy is counting on
that this dangling thread will convince FX to renew Grotesquerie for round two so we can finally get the answers we seek
Speaking of season 2, Niecy Nash-Betts did chat with Deadline after the finale aired to discuss what things might look like for Lois moving forward
\"The main thing that I think I’m looking forward to [in a potential second season] is
the doctor says Grotesquerie is an amalgamation of all of the evils that have happened in the world in [her] mind
but then these crimes start to happen literally
\"There still are a few questions I’m waiting to have answered
that means me sitting at a dinner with Ryan for hours telling me where he planned on this story going.\"

Samantha von Ende and Gavriela Geller, a married couple at the forefront of the Kansas City Jewish community’s fight against antisemitism, have each recently received national recognition for their efforts.
Von Ende, an academic and advocate as well as co-founder and executive director of the AMICUS Institute for Governance, has been recognized by Hadassah as one of this year’s “18 American Zionist Women You Should Know.” Geller, the executive director of Jewish Community Relations Bureau | American Jewish Committee (JCRB|AJC), was honored with a Director’s Community Leadership Award from the FBI.
Von Ende credits her work founding and directing the AMICUS Institute with helping develop her communication skills that benefit her Jewish and Zionist advocacy. Other formal endeavors in that field include being the former director of academic affairs for the Consulate General of Israel to the Southeastern United States; an educator and committee member of Limmud; a Birthright staff leader; and being involved with Israel Policy Forum.
As the executive director of JCRB|AJC, Geller leads a five-person team in combating antisemitism in Kansas City. JCRB|AJC represents the Jewish communities in Kansas and Western Missouri in matters of public policy on all levels of education and government, ranging from school administrators to law enforcement and state officials. She and her team facilitate programs, teach classes, lead events and meet with officials to work to fight antisemitism and injustice.
Samantha von Ende — “A Zionist Woman You Should Know”
Described by Hadassah as a “scholar, advocate, educator and strategic visionary,” von Ende is one of the 18 women highlighted by Hadassah in its second annual list of women “making an impact and shaping the future of Zionism.”
“It’s a profound honor to be recognized by Hadassah in this capacity,” von Ende said. “Hadassah is a revered institution which upholds principles that I believe every human on Earth would find respectable: healthcare, youth development, self sovereignty, women’s inclusion in matters of community interest.”
Among the other honorees are actress Debra Messing, social media influencer Shai Albrecht and poet Tova Ricardo. (The full list of honorees is available at hadassah.org/18women.) Von Ende said her fellow awardees inspire her and that she is fortunate to interact with Hadassah in her work.
Geller feels great pride in her spouse’s achievement.
“Anyone who knows Sam knows that she is one of the most uniquely brilliant minds of our time,” Geller said. “To have her insight, ideas, analysis, and tangible support as an educator and leader, has been such a gift to our whole community — and most of that support is done so quietly that people will never know how hard she works for all of us.”
Geller received her award from FBI Director Christopher Way on April 19. The Director’s Community Leadership Award is awarded yearly by the national bureau to a person or organization from each of the FBI’s 56 field offices.
“Ms. Geller is a trusted partner of the FBI Kansas City,” said Stephen Cyrus, special agent in charge at FBI Kansas City. “Through her leadership with the JCRB|AJC, the FBI enjoys a strong partnership. Her work serving the community, as well as her work connecting the community and law enforcement, is deserving of this recognition.”
Geller, who wanted to join the FBI as a teenager, is proud to work with and be honored by the organization.
“It’s so meaningful to be recognized for JCRB|AJC’s efforts to bring communities together to fight hate and extremism,” she said. “...I’m grateful and honored that they feel my efforts — really, our organization’s efforts — have been impactful in creating safer communities across our region.”
Von Ende said that Geller is deserving of this award, and she is proud of her spouse for her work.
“Gavi’s award is remarkable and yet a well-deserved national recognition for her cross-community work promoting justice, safety, dialogue and inter-community relationship-building in this city and region,” von Ende said. “...From board development and staff recruiting to Jewish youth empowerment and effective government relations, Gavi is a star. We are seen better because of her light.”
Both Geller and von Ende grew up in the Kansas City Jewish community, attended Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA) and were steeped in Jewish values by their families. Despite both being alumnae from HBHA, they did not know each other when they were students.
Geller attended Congregations Beth Shalom and Beth Torah while growing up. Being Jewish was important to her father, who died when she was 10. She felt an obligation to continue his sense of identity and commitment to family, leading to her transferring to HBHA for her freshman year of high school — a move she called “the most pivotal decision in [her] Jewish journey.”
Geller and von Ende met each other as adults and formed a deep bond. Geller said that since their first date, she and von Ende shared a connection in expertise and passion in community relations, Israel advocacy and combating antisemitism.
Now married, von Ende and Geller continue to fight antisemitism together. They both said that the current wave of antisemitism is not over, but this does not deter them.
Despite the current and upcoming challenges in Jewish relations and combating antisemitism, both von Ende and Geller are steadfast in their goals of creating a better world for the Jewish community, and they are energized and inspired by each other’s efforts and the progress made.
“Sam and I share the same values and the same passion and commitment to the Jewish community,” Geller said. “...Everything we do is for our ancestors and for our future generations. And to be able to connect with my spouse on that level — spiritually and professionally — it’s incredible.”

This article presents a case study of a fishery in the port-town community of Ende
a former littoral hub located at the periphery of major commercial systems in the Indo-Pacific region
The article argues that more attention be paid to the role of transregional maritime networks
and navigational practices embedded within local tenure systems to understand the apparent absence of formal control of marine and coastal resources
Through ethnographic and archival research
this study identifies the presence of indigenous institutions for fishing grounds regulation and documents the existence of broader transregional norms dictating proper fishing and navigation
Exploring the interactions between more pluralistic customary systems that exist in port-towns such as Ende and recent fishery development policies
the article discusses some of the obstacles to implementing sustainable co-management strategies
While the Indonesian central government is strongly promoting co-governance approaches for resource management
these institutional models are based on geographically narrow definitions of tradition and customary law which can lead to management failures
such as elite capture and local fishers’ disenfranchisement
policies emphasize the formation of cooperative groups without considering transregional beliefs about independence and pre-established systems of obligations
and the use of non-sustainable practices continue
embodying predominant Southeast Asian beliefs
Endenese are known for their entrepreneurial nature and strong self-sufficiency ethos
these notions are ignored by local government agencies that view the fishermen as selfish and disorganized
In order to formulate true participatory solutions
a careful assessment of the role played by transregional perspectives that go beyond geographically localized understandings of customary practices is needed
The article concludes with a consideration of the role played by decentralization processes
and aid programs in entrenching poverty and inequality among local communities
The goal of this article is to advance the understanding of how co-management frameworks may benefit from adopting a transregional perspective in the identification of local systems of coastal and marine tenure
a former littoral hub positioned at the periphery of major commercial systems in the Indo-Pacific region
Although this settlement is in a relatively remote location when compared to other islands such as Java and Sumatra
it represents a vital center within the larger Nusa Tenggara Timur and Maluku provinces
Ende is second in importance to other towns like Kupang in Timor
and constitutes a significant step in the movement of commodities
and raw materials toward the eastern parts of the archipelago
The case study argues that more attention be paid to the role of transregional maritime networks
and navigational practices that are embedded within local tenure systems to understand the apparent absence of formal control of marine and coastal resources
the objectives are to identify the presence of indigenous institutions that regulate access
and use of fishing territories and specific stocks and to document the existence of broader transregional norms
and conventions dictating proper fishing and navigation
By exploring the interactions between nested systems of local and transregional regulations and more recent fishery development policies
the goal is to discuss some of the obstacles to implementing sustainable co-management strategies in port-towns such as Ende
and aid programs in increasing inequality among local communities
and Co-Governance Frameworks in Eastern Indonesia
As a result of the multi-ethnic fabric of coastal hubs
fishing communities residing in them can be highly heterogeneous in how they value and manage resources
The combination of local indigenous rules with exposure to broader transregional nautical usages and maritime conventions creates a constellation of diverse institutions regulating fishing activities
the access to stocks and potential commodities
or even preferences regarding the adoption of technology
While shared conventions and usages predominated in nautical and economic settings
practices and rules were deeply embedded at the local level in the social and cultural structures of indigenous adat
the types of tenure rights and the ability of certain institutions to enact them were directly determined and subordinated to an individual’s group membership (adscription to lineages)
adat denoted pre-existing ancestral structures with a solid sphere of influence in arbitrating cases related to kinship or reciprocity obligations
Regarding the management and use of natural resources
and moral beliefs closely tied to origin narratives and cosmologies
the impact of the new regulations on customary management introduced by the central Indonesian government is yet to be determined
coastal Endenese villages in the regency’s southern areas have not gained proper legal recognition either as adat (masyarakat adat) or as traditional communities (masyarakat tradisional)
Map of Ende Regency and trade towns of Eastern Indonesia
The lack of resources to support enforcement has resulted in a game of cat-and-mouse between fishermen and authorities
These parties usually include nets or fiber boats
and prioritize the formation of fishing clusters and cooperative arrangements rather than capacity development
Data were collected over 22 months of fieldwork in Ende with visits in 2009 and 2010
Follow-up visits to Jakarta took place in 2013
along with responses to demographic surveys
constitute the major sources of data for the thematic analysis
A total of 140 semi-structured interviews and conversations with fishermen (n: 130)
and officers and administrative personal from the local fishing commission
and the marine police (n: 10) were carried out from 2011 to 2013
a total of 60 interviews were tape-recorded with consent from participants
All interviews followed a common guide that included specific questions on local resource management practices such as customary usages and rules
and fishing regulation (authorities responsible for controlling access at the village level); normal fishing activities and fishing clusters; reciprocity
and obligations; fishing behavior and responsibilities at sea; and fishery policies in relation to other types gear
Additional information from informal conversations was also captured in field notes and diaries
Interviews and conversations were conducted in Bahasa Indonesia with the support of three Indonesian research assistants
Demographic and basic fishing information including earnings from fishing by month and season
estimates of calendar month fishing effort
and ownership of gear and normal fishery targets per season
was also obtained through a specific survey and included a total of 135 households in the villages of Ipy
Results from the demographic questionnaire
in conjunction with official fishing surveys documenting fishing effort from the local fishing office and reports from the Indonesian statistical office in Ende from 2009 through 2019 (Badan Pusat Statistik Ende)
In addition to ethnographic fieldwork in Eko Reko
and Ipy villages starting with visits in 2009 and concluding at the end of 2012
the researcher participated in public meetings on the topics of environmental protection
and socialization carried out in April and September of 2012
the researcher presented preliminary results on non-sustainable practices and fishing effort among local officers and fishermen representatives
the researcher was present as part of the audience in a training session on management policies for environmental conservation
and actualize findings from fieldwork and archival research
if managers seek to identify specific principles that only apply to the marine world without considering land-ocean interdependences
are tailored to manage coastal or marine resources
I carefully discuss findings pertaining to the regulation of marine and coastal resources as well as fishing and navigation behavior
Coastal Endenese possess several institutions seeking to manage or harvest specific fisheries and coastal organisms
which are deeply embedded in religious and cultural practices
there are rules and prohibitions related to the fishing of red snapper (ikan kakap merah
or “iká asa,” Lutjanus campechanus; “iká ziké,” Lutjanidae spps.)
When entering known habitats of red snapper
fishermen are to follow specific behavior rules
These areas are known as pantangan or pemali (“pire”)
terms that indicate the existence of a taboo
or stand in their canoe at the risk of disturbing the fish underneath
if someone finds a spot where red snapper bite
that person has priority in accessing the fishing ground the following days
Others can only enter the area after the lucky fisherman chooses a place and drops a line (tidak boleh masuk duluan)
If the order of precedence is not respected
offenders will not capture any fish for the duration of that lunar month
Taboo areas are part of a larger set of spatial locations recognized by all yet owned by no one
some of these locations were referred to as angker (cursed) by the interviewees
visiting these spaces can lead to mystical encounters
and nets being so heavy that several men cannot pull them
Some fishermen even described being deceived and or warned by spirits
rules about red snappers are directly inherited from their ancestors (nenek moyang)
Their origin is in a legend that accounts for how Endenese were taught and granted permission to fish by a red snapper’s spirit
Other Endenese traditional narratives mention sailfish
and dugongs as sharing a common ancestry with humans; and portray marlin
Whereas some of these legends do not often prohibit species harvesting
they may limit the sale or use of the carcasses and parts
numerous individual and family level taboos restrict the consumption of marine products such as octopus
Additional prescriptions are associated with illness from collecting items (pearls and thorn or branch corals) without the custodian spirits’ permission or when squandering valuable objects
a few respondents indicated that there were additional ritual traditions and special rules to follow to harvest “ika ipú” (ikan bandeng
Chanos chanos) and “nale” (nyale
These prescriptions are found in the regency of Ende and along coastal villages in the Sikka and Manggarai regencies in Flores
Fish fry are harvested during their upstream migration
Sea worms become more numerous in the annual low tide
Both species are associated with changes in seasons
the flocks of small milkfish are seen in the beaches of Mbu’u and Nanganesa and in the coast of Nangapanda during April and May
adat chiefs or elders keep calculations based on prior occurrences
Prohibitions are in place surrounding the harvesting with people being forbidden from crowding the coast at the risk of scaring the organisms
Permissions are granted after envoys observe sufficient numbers of stocks
Access to nearby maritime and coastal resources is loosely regulated at the village level
with anyone residing within the village or neighboring areas being able to exploit associated fishing grounds at will
The local jurisdiction of fishing areas extends to approximately 3 miles offshore
a practical distance that encompasses what the eye can see
Areas may have expanded or contracted in the past depending on warfare
Fishing grounds often include reef areas (“peró iká,” coral fish places) where only small nets and lines can be deployed
Fishermen perceive local grounds as a commons: no one from the village owns
or exclusive rights over these spaces and outsiders are precluded from using them without appropriate permissions
Endenese beaches and tidal flats (“meti tu’u”) positioned directly in front of the village are also communally owned
the fishing grounds and nearshore habitats around Ende receive the visit of foreign Indonesian Bajau and Buginese fishermen seeking sea cucumbers (Holothuria spps.
Local village chiefs are responsible for granting permission to use local commons to outsiders after the payment of a small fee
The amount or kind of payment may include a percentage of gains
permission to operate in a village’s fishing grounds is not always conceded
During my research I encountered a village head who refused access to Bajau fishermen to protect local yields (jaga hasil laut nelayan) and because they associated this group with coral blasting
I found that village chiefs did not care to impose any restrictions or that when they did their enforcement was lax
No limitations existed on the amount of resources that foreigners could harvest since those products were not regularly extracted by the local fishermen
Endenese did not oppose the activities of the Bajau
they were upset by the complacent attitude shown by most village chiefs who regarded fishing grounds as open access rather than communally regulated commons and allowed the unrestricted exploitation of valuable products
Previous examples may suggest that Endenese have ineffective mechanisms to control the harvesting of certain resources
there are very clearly delineated prescriptions regarding the types of gear that can be deployed within a village’s fishing grounds
pukat lampara) are not allowed within nearshore habitats and tidal areas
While these norms are followed and adhered to by a large proportion of the local fishermen
changes in boat sizes and mechanization have created new challenges to their enforcement
conflicts had been proliferating between canoe fishermen and larger boats in terms of the deployment of bigger nets and neon lights
The reason was the lack of a clear ordinance from the district fishing commission regulating larger lampara boats’ activities in nearby grounds
While said regulation seems to have been in place and poorly respected
most large-scale fishermen were conveniently unaware of their existence or willingly chose to break the rules (see for example
some village chiefs were complicit (kepala desa tidak keras
allowing illegal or indiscriminate practices
interviewees also reported the presence of larger Indonesian
and Korean tankers in offshore areas (more than 12 miles)
these fishing grounds were under provincial or central government level controls and required specific permits (Izin Usaha Perikanan
Since most Endenese fishermen did not venture into the open seas except for seafaring or traveling
they did not trouble themselves with the larger tankers
local fishermen were invited on board to receive a gift of frozen fish
or when traveling together and choosing fishing spots
there is a proper set of navigational practices and courtesies that must be observed
whether in coastal fishing spots or more distant fishing grounds
customs dictate that the new party should ask politely for permission (mintah sopan) and offer a small gift of fish or cigarettes
since departure times coincide with the low tide
it is common for local fishermen to travel the distance to fishing grounds as a group or convoy (rombongan
If along the way or when arriving at suitable spot one of the boats decides to stop
The rest of the group must pass the boat and can only stop in locations that do not interfere with the fishing activities of the first vessel
It is expected that newcomers will keep a proper distance and will not deploy their gear in a way that may affect the captures of other boats
when setting a long gill net in deeper waters
fishermen position their boat at the “top of the current.” The boat navigator may use a line with a small weight to assess the direction of the current
and throw the net end overboard over the boat’s side that faces the wind
the fishermen continue to deploy the net by moving the boat at an angle to the current
allowing the net to drift without tangling
Net setting is a process that is done quickly but with a high level of skill and expertise
The operation is challenging given that Endenese gill nets can range in length
Because currents change with the tide and conditions at sea may affect water layers
the nets can get tangled or even sink if not properly set early on
great care is taken among the fishermen to provide sufficient space in their maneuvers not to hamper others’ performance
an order of precedence is respected that prevents latecomers from deploying their gear in a way that intercepts fishing stocks and prevents them from reaching other fishermen’s nets
Interviewees explained this as harus [lewat] arus di bawah
arriving vessels and their nets must not cut or traverse the ocean current from the top (where other boats are standing)
The newcomers should position themselves south of the flowing current to prevent the entanglement with pre-existing fishing nets and the luring of targeted stocks with their lamps
A similar more simplified principle of precedence applies to canoes
which rely on hook and line for their captures
because they relocate multiple times in a single trip to accommodate changes in currents
they are constantly aware of whether they may be intruding or impinging upon another fisherman’s space
Other types of fishing gear such as fishing traps and aggregating devices (rompong)
should be also clearly marked with floats and buoys to prevent accidents
though one interviewee indicated that in the past prohibition signs were also placed in fishing cages
Endenese have clear long-standing rules that must be followed
Orders of arrival and precedence are observed when entering fishing grounds
Placing the boat in the wrong location or too close to others (terlalu dekat)
is considered both a breach of etiquette and a significant offense
When the violation of one of these conventions occurs
there is no standard or predetermined way to penalize infractors
they would suffer recriminations and disapproval from others; consequences would affect all daily life interactions in the village
the spirit of adat rules requires people to be respectful in all instances
a system that strictly sanctions when someone speaks out of turn
or disrespects important topics (jangan omong sembarangan
circumspection must predominate in all social interactions
Discretion and sobriety must also extend to implementing sanctions
in the cases where the gravity of offenses could not be ignored
local fishermen would directly tell infractors that they were not the first to arrive (aku yang dulu
Conflicts between smaller sampan and lampara boats often played out in this context
with fishermen complaining about the larger vessels’ neon lights making nets visible to the fish or drawing stocks away
and Endenese fishermen may resort to damaging or stealing fishing gear such as lamps and flotation devices
As it was explained to me by an older fisherman the making of a living requires constant and persisting efforts
and also poses dangerous perils and threats to the unprepared
One needs to be receptive to God in order to receive his grace
but also be constantly guarded against the deceptions of djins and the devil
While reflecting in spirit broader transregional conventions
Endenese rules and moral beliefs are deeply woven into indigenous customary institutions and Islamic syncretism
adat governs all economic and civil transactions aboard a vessel
the allocation of shares and responsibilities
they were mandated to respect their captain and papelele (often part of the same family)
They were also required to help in fixing the nets and fishing gear
take part in communal work (“kema lambo,” work in boat)
and participate in ceremonies and religious prayers (Fatiha)
customary obligations stipulated a remuneration system for those that helped fishermen haul their boat when onshore or transport and process captures
with the allocation of different parts of the fish according to rank and effort
adat dictated that a fisherman ought to share his fortune with family members (bagi-bagi)
without expecting a commensurate remuneration (kamu punya rezeki
Reciprocity is both tinted by local notions of kinship and Islamic values
It was referred to me as the “zekat” (zakat
an obligatory payment and one of the five mandatory pillars for Muslims)
mandated reciprocity can also be a cause of complaint
Many fishermen indicate that adat kinship obligations kept them at subsistence levels (adat rugi
interviewees described other adat practices in terms of safety
and when going fishing during the rainy and windy season
if one person has departed in rapidly deteriorating weather conditions others have to follow to ensure safe return
constant surveillance and awareness of who is at sea are normal among Endenese neighbors
with rescue efforts often bringing together several villages to procure aid
It should be noted that, like other adat systems of Eastern Indonesia (Zerner, 1994; Pannell, 1997)
some of the rules currently in place have suffered important changes over time due to the pressures imposed by colonization
Interviewees attributed key changes in the system of shares and profit distribution as a result of the growing influence of the papele in the early decades of the 1980s and 1990s
The more recent introduction of fishing mechanization policies in the early 2000s and 2010s has led to the adoption of bigger lampara boats
With changes in labor dynamics and wealth concentration
crew-patron relationships have been revitalized
are rapidly evolving into purely economic relations and leading to a more intensive exploitation of maritime and coastal resources
During my interviews and conversations with local fishery officers and managers
I came across the same explanation of why most efforts to regulate coastal resources and develop the fishery had failed: orang Ende tidak punya adat (the Endenese people do not know customary law)
Coastal Endenese do follow a series of norms and rules to control access to local fishing grounds
Lack of awareness of customary principles and their application to all transactions concerning marine and coastal ecosystems could be explained by the absence of significant interactions between managers and fishermen
As many fishermen said: orang perikanan tidak turun ke pantai (the fishery managers do not come visit the coast)
Regarding non-sustainable practices, and despite reports to the contrary by fishery officers and media articles (de Rosary, 2020; Pius, 2020), I found that there is broad resistance to coral blasting and potassium use among the local communities (Ramenzoni, 2013b)
Most fishermen saw a connection between the reduction in the size of the catch over the last 30 years and damaging fishing practices
directly blaming illegal fishing for the current situation
With some exceptions depending on the village
they would actively report anyone who uses bombs in local fishing grounds
The use of explosives was equated to non-halal ways of making money and described as rezeki kotor (dirty luck) and barang panas (hot items)
dynamite use is still prevalent due to the existence of what were considered valid excuses
The majority of interviewed fishermen were disappointed by long-standing institutional promises to provide more powerful engines
or contracts with processing plants to develop the fishery
Non-sustainable practices such as coral blasting provided a way of drawing attention to local plights and the inefficacy of current policies
it was said during conversations that only people in elevated positions
and those involved in the administration of the village received government support
which were sometimes called free-riders or parasites (“umpang”) given that they only had their workforce to sell
continued to have no access to any kind of aid or welfare
They were angry that the DPK would not respect their preferences
a fisherman said: orang di sini tidak bisa punya pikiran sendiri diri
the people here are not allowed to think for themselves
any kind of policy originating from the government was seen as not transparent
and increasing inequality (orang miskin tambah miskin
the rules for obtaining aid were in open conflict with longstanding principles of independence and luck that dominated the larger Southeast Asian maritime world
rooted in religious ideas about the relation between diligent work and God’s blessings
dictated that success was an individual achievement
and general wealth were fruits of hard labor and initiative reflecting the patient dedication (surrender) to Allah
Because it was only through an individual’s effort that spiritual and material gains were obtained
local fishermen saw the sharing of ownership in their means of production (boats and nets) as subordinating their capacity for action to the willingness of others
It must be emphasized that fishermen were not against collaboration in general
they were skeptical of the notion that working with others would prove fruitful and felt that policy requirements were diminishing their agency
the high level of frustration with the DPK
and the onerous customary obligations that Endenese had to comply with in terms of reciprocity and patronage systems
and the blatant corruption shown by the distribution of aid led many fishermen to dismiss subsidies altogether
while formal legal instruments from the government reinforce some of these norms (i.e.
other widespread and deeply naturalized rules such as the sharing of captures and spatial usages are not contemplated within policies
There is a gap in the understanding of how Endenese communities regulate marine environments and of the cultural value of independence
leading to the idea among fishery managers that tenure institutions are weak or inexistent
in the disenfranchisement of local communities
their lack of participation in decision-making
and their exclusion in the design and application of management solutions
the implementation of co-management policies based purely on the existence of adat or categories such as masyarakat tradisional in port-towns and highly cosmopolitan coastal hubs like Ende cannot only be challenging
but also lead to policy failures and further environmental degradation
it is captured in the justifications voiced by officials that Endenese do not have an adat or strong institutions
awareness of the biases and asymmetries in the application of co-governance programs
how such schemes may dismiss the influence of transregional and localized cosmologies
constitutes a much-needed step to finding representative solutions in an increasingly globalized world
where unity in diversity (bhinneka tunggal ika) has become a national declaration of religious and cultural tolerance
legalistic pluralism is paramount to achieving a more equal future

Gas is an essential part of the modern Germany-Russia relations
From the beginning of the cooperation in this field — from the 1960s to February 2022 — both countries stubbornly called those relations economic
Sometimes this cooperation had to be placed in a political context — the principle of Wandel durch Handel (“Changes through trade” in German) claimed that it was the way for promoting peaceful coexistence in the polar world of the Cold War era (Patrick
After the Wall fell and the Soviet Union collapsed
the trade (positioned solely as an economic activity) acquired the status of an effective political tool for democratization of the totalitarian society
The construction of Nord Stream 2 began in 2015 after Russia annexed Crimea
sent its troops to the eastern regions of Ukraine
Both the agreements of the past centuries and Nord Stream provoked the reactions of the international community: historically
the USA was against the energy dependence of the European countries on the USSR/RF
whereas the countries of Central and Eastern Europe emphasized that the creation of a pipeline bypassing the territories of these countries — both Nord Streams were installed on the Baltic sea bed — would release the Russian government from any restrictions on pursuing an aggressive expansionist policy towards them (Deutsche Welle
as the leader and one of the most powerful economies and politics of the European Union
Germany did not take those arguments seriously and continued to be involved in what it called “economic relations.”
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 fully demonstrated the energy dependence of Germany on the Russian Federation
Many articles in the international media were devoted to the history and analysis of this dependence
In the Western world of the liberal pacifism
the belief in the possibility of cooperating with authoritarian regimes and controlling them through economic interdependence seemed to be the best recipe against wars after the “end of history”
The practice where the “pipelines and gas” was the first act (seemingly) worked perfectly: Russia would not violate international regulations to continue trading and make a profit
news about Nord Stream 2 returned to the pages of German newspapers
and its detonation damaged three of the four strings of the pipeline
neither Nord Stream 1 nor Nord Stream 2 are operative
but the cause is not the destruction of gas networks — Nord Stream 2 has no certification and is not allowed to work
Nord Stream 1 stopped supplying gas after the full-scale invasion and refused to allow European countries to pay for this service in rubles
The result of the German investigation is an arrest warrant issued against a Ukrainian citizen
journalist articles primarily focused on the alleged escape of the suspect from Poland to Ukraine
as well as speculations about whether President Volodymyr Zelensky was aware of and responsible for this detonation
there was no summary — “in previous series” — of the history of the gas pipeline construction or revision of the history of Germany-Russia gas relations
Many explanatory articles were written in the wake of the desire to clear up what Germany did not understand about Russia and how it happened that authoritarian Russia could function much easier without economic relations with Germany and Europe than Germany could without cheap gas
there were clearly articulated (but mostly not mainstream) voices about the historical responsibility of Germany to Ukraine — both during World War II and in recent times
weak reaction to the annexation of Crimea and occupation of the eastern regions
Even though the German high-ranking officials publicly uttered phrases such as “we were wrong,” “Nord Stream 2 was a mistake,” and “we did a lot of things wrong” (Patrick
this assessment did not end with investigations regarding the German officials who lobbied Russian interests in the German foreign and domestic policy for years
no analysis of their imperial practices was made
The Leak. Das Ende der Pipeline (“Leak
The End of the Pipeline”) exhibition by Philipp Goll
which was shown from April to September 2024 in Leipzig’s Museum of Fine Arts (Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig)
also speaks about Russia-Germany gas relations
The optics used by the artists in their work were radically different from the established media ways of reading and talking about these countries’ gas relations
The photo is from the MdbK website and is courtesy of Oleksiy Radynski
The discourse built and spread by the empire sooner or later becomes total; if a nation is not lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time (that is to gain independence from the empire)
this nation disappears as a subject of history and becomes a part of the empire
One of the walls presents the chronology of Germany-Russia gas contracts — “Timeline: Das Ende der Pipeline” by Philipp Goll — from the purchase of pipes by tsarist Russia from Mannesmann (the German company) at the turn of the ХІХ-ХХ centuries to the “sobering” of Germany in 2022
The critical event in this chronology is the discovery of the Urengoy gas field in the 1960s
Its inexhaustible reserves and Russia’s willingness to sell them at a moderate price were attractive to industries in West Germany and other European countries that urgently needed the resources for their ambitious development
Drivers of this agreement on the part of West Germany were banks and owners of big businesses (Mannesmann was an active player in this process)
while policymakers of the country were not the loudest advocates of the agreement
businesses argued that the state apparatus should not interfere with free economic relations
the West German policy after World War II was extremely negative towards any international initiatives proposed by the Soviet Union
being ready for a possible attack by Soviet forces from the territory of East Germany
from the position of a superpower and leader of the free world
had an influence on the political processes in Western Europe and experience of entering into conflicts with the USSR on the territories of third countries
was suspicious of any relations of democratic countries with the USSR (Schattenberg
The turning point in this story is the assumption of power by Willy Brandt
the Chancellor of Germany famous for the act of kneeling in front of the memorial to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
— and his active search for ways to reconcile with East Germany and the Warsaw Pact countries (Ostpolitik)
the view of economic interdependence as a “he who trades does not make war” model prevailed (Patrick
does not consider the political context or calculate the consequences at all
the world lived in fear of a possible nuclear war; democratic countries
skeptical about the intentions of the USSR
were accumulating weapons and preparing for World War III
An obstacle for the USSR in the arms race was the lack of currency for purchasing specific foreign equipment
the analogs of which did not exist in the Soviet Union
By signing the “agreement of the century,” as the gas contracts of the USSR and the Federal Republic of Germany were called in the media
the central European country undertook to sponsor the Union with foreign currency for the next decade
Another important point that Goll discusses in his chronology is the ecological dimension of these relations
gas relations between (West) Germany and (USSR) Russia were based
on Willy Brandt’s desire to make “the sky over the Ruhr region blue again”; therefore
the use of gas instead of coal was perceived as an effective solution
Europeans were not interested in the price of laying a gas pipeline
construction of transport lines in the north of Russia
and other infrastructure related to this industry
and the Soviet authorities were not interested in the Siberian ecosystems either
publications analyzing the region’s catastrophe started to appear
Goll refers to the book by the dissident Boris Komarov (real name: Ze’ev Wolfson) “The Destruction of Nature in the Soviet Union” which talks about degradation of the tundra ecosystem and pollution of the Baikal Island
The film “Where Russia Ends” by Oleksiy Radynski takes a prominent place at the exhibition
Radynski says that the idea of this work arose from the films found in the Kyivnaukfilm archive
Archival tapes show the landscapes of Siberia
episodes from the life of the local population
and shots of interaction between people and animals of the region
There are also production scenes: workers welding pipes
The final intentions of the authors of these materials are not known
the period of stagnation and oppression of the national cultures in the Soviet republics
the viewer (who grew up in the countries of the former USSR) can imagine the narrative accompaniment of this footage
when an object is reinvented and its message is changed
The material filmed by Ukrainians about Siberia
and landscapes is accompanied by a soundtrack that reveals to the viewer the history of occupation of the region
as well as colonial practices of the Russians
from renaming of local ethnic groups (instead of the native name
and the Ligoravetlans to Chukchi) to indifferent attitude towards the areas of life and movement of the local fauna
endangering the survival practices of both the animals and the indigenous population
he consulted with representatives of Indigenous peoples
allowing him to find space for the story of the nameless (in this case
with a distorted name) — a story about himself
The audio track in the form of diary notes also informs the viewer about the attempts of the peoples of Siberia to gain political agency in 1990 — the regions of Siberia
announced the Declarations of State Sovereignty
all the national republics that would later declare their independence and separate from the imperial center passed this stage
The regions of Russia proclaimed state sovereignty to expand their political identity or gain independence
Russia stopped the region’s emancipation
the Ukrainian film crew itself was under (Soviet) occupation
and its optics echoed the imperial optics of the Russians regarding Siberia
It was a kind of symbolic occupation of the land physically captured by your common metropole
which turns the archival footage into an educational film and tells the story of the occupation and genocidal practices of the Russians against the indigenous peoples of the North
breaks the cycle of colonial entropy and postulates colonial solidarity instead
The artist pitches his complete work as an anti-colonial road movie
the critical thought of the work at large presents itself in the exposition space — Siberia and the ethnic groups of this territory are under Russia’s occupation
Siberian lands and all of the mineral resources within belong to the Russians who drain them with a colonial logic — taking everything valuable or sound from the colony
using its lands as store-rooms and not as a home one should take care of and look after
the artists partake in current discussions about the decolonization of Russia
Aside from the desire to enable occupied nations and ethnic groups to gain political agency
the issue of Russia’s decolonization is also raised in connection with the question: “What does Ukraine winning in the Ukrainian-Russian war mean?” “What does Russia losing mean?”
The intention to design a strategy for preventing similar wars in the future drives the Western world to conceptualize and imagine a Russia free of imperial ambitions
Radynski’s approach seems straightforward and radical
(Summary of texts and interviews by Saltaiev
The third part of the exposition — Leak by Hito Steyerl — consists of screens placed on a large wall displaying images that move like liquid inside pipes
The main theme is nurturing the discourse around this pipeline as a manifestation of friendship between German and (Soviet) Russian people
Culture is the basic tool of its construction
private companies like Mannesnamm AG and Deutsche Bank
cooperated with the USSR Ministry of Culture to arrange exhibitions of Russian (Soviet) art and display it in German cities while German art was shown in the Soviet Union
Those cultural projects were dubbed a “cultural pipeline” (sic!)
bringing the two cultures closer and adding value to gas supply contracts
Standing out in this portion of the exposition are four minutes of an actual WDR channel report reproduced by the artist
The journalist storyline centers around a German and a Soviet official animatedly discussing the benefits of their cooperation
the German asks his colleague whether he knows a joke about the Chukchi
further noting that he is not sure if one should tell jokes of this kind because the Chukchi are not fond of them
just like Frisians are not fond of jokes about Frisians
an indigenous population of the coastal lands of Germany
having the status and protections of a national minority
The political party Die Friesen had been promoting the necessity of Frisians’ political representation in the government since 2007
Jokes about Frisians belong to the category of chauvinistic jokes about representatives of other nations/ethnic groups in which they are depicted as unintelligent and primitive
Reading Goll’s timeline and viewing Radynski’s film
we understand that yet another story of colonialism is in front of us: the metropole has won and ultimately controls the discourse
That is why there are no discussions of the occupation of those nations and their lands
A surprising fact is that the West German private property owners and policymakers were aware of the colonial abuse
but that did not stop them from being a contributor and beneficiaries
the context which gave rise to this artwork
and also all the explanations of Germany’s reliance on Russia and Germany’s unwillingness to become a loyal ally of Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invader
make one hark back to the World War II experience and importance of Ukrainian lands in the Nazi’s fantasies
While the intention to find a final solution to the Jewish question (and the successful implementation thereof at all locations of mass execution of Jews and in extermination camps) is talked about at the international level
which was no less important and desirable for him
the goal of turning Ukrainian and Belarusian lands into a perfect Lebensraum meant as an idyllic farming space for the Germans
And the Ukrainian and Belarusian populations were meant to be reduced drastically (this is no secret that Hitler had plans for having the inhabitants of large Ukrainian cities killed by starvation)
The plan did not materialize not because Hitler had changed his mind; his plans of overturning the communist power in Moscow and subsequently destroying Moscow and Peterburg fell through; the Red Army launched an offensive and started recapturing the occupied territories
so he had neither time nor resource to perform those large-scale killings (Snyder
With this colonial dream not having been talked through
we ultimately get contemporary Germans (Traverso
2022) who would hate to offend Russians because of all the things the Germans had done to them during World War II
Ukrainians and Belarusians occupied by the Soviet power simply do not exist in this guilt trip — an obvious sign of imperial haughtiness concerning the so-called small peoples
It was recently revealed that a German deputy from the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party
engaging Belarusian political prisoners for his farm work
The German politician regularly visited the farm and followed up on the work progress
This collaboration began in 2020 — the year of Belarusian protests against Oleksandr Lukashenko
who had tampered with the elections yet another time
It is no wonder that the right-wing forces of Saxony (the federal land where Dornau serves as deputy) do not regard this as a problem: transforming Belarus into a farming heaven and overseeing prisoner work is a literal reiteration of Hitler’s plans regarding Central and Eastern Europe territories
which tells through artistic devices the story of the free democratic and liberal Germany depending on the authoritarian and despotic Russia
is a demonstration of how easy it is for empires that had not reflected on their imperial complex to come to an understanding and exploit colonies together
Since none of the journalist or academic materials I perused while preparing this piece did not articulate the colonial nature of the agreement
there is a temptation to succumb to optimistic self-suggestion and say that the statements by Goll
and Steyerl managed to become a fracture in the international discourse of not seeing
knowing or intentionally hushing up the fact that Russia’s gas does not belong to it and that Siberia is a territory occupied by Russia
Whether this is or is not the case remains to be seen
And Ukrainians have to stick with reiterating the moral
political imperative voiced by Oleksiy Radynski: all the lands under the Russian occupation will be freed in the long run

Neste’s Journey to Zero “My City Reimagined” series asks local people in major cities to reimagine their hometown with a vision for sustainability. Their ideas are then brought to life with the help of 3D animation. In the first episode, watch Jacqueline van den Ende, co-founder and CEO of Carbon Equity, a climate investing platform, reimagine Amsterdam.
𝕏“Amsterdam is a city that feels like a village
You can bike anywhere in 30 minutes; you can walk anywhere – it is a beautiful place to live in.”
Jacqueline van den Ende takes us to three locations close to her heart in Amsterdam and gives her take on how they could be made even better from a sustainability point of view
What would van den Ende’s vision look like if it became reality
“My neighborhood is one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam
I love it because it is right next to the canals
there are a lot of cool small restaurants and cafés but also a lot of greenery
Many people walk through here and they leave their cans
pizza boxes and food waste either on the streets or in the bushes
I would love for that trash to be collected and put into better use.”
Fact: Currently, around 54% of the waste produced in Amsterdam is recycled, according to the city of Amsterdam
the canals could be even better if the water quality improved and the canals became swimmable
and if all the boats that pass through would be electric and quiet as they ship people and goods through the city.”
Fact: According to Waternet
more than 110 kilograms of plastic waste is collected from Amsterdam’s waterways every day
“The NDSM area is one of my favorite areas in Amsterdam
It used to be a shipyard but now it has become an artistic hub with a lot of street art
it is increasingly transforming into a residential area
I hope for these buildings to be fully sustainable and circular intermixed with urban farms
and that the area retains much of its unique cultural heritage.”
Fact: According to the city of Amsterdam
construction and demolition waste represents 69% of the total waste generated in the city
