TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - International Law Professor at the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, said the country’s joint development with China potentially violates the law.
“Several laws in Indonesia are violated if the joint development truly comes to fruition,” said Hikmahanto Juwana in a statement to Tempo on Wednesday
Indonesian President Prabowo and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping issued a joint statement on November 9
where it’s mentioned that "the two sides reached important common understanding on joint development in areas of overlapping claims."
which said “The two sides will jointly create more bright spots in maritime cooperation.”
Hikmahanto questioned whether the overlapping claims cited related to China’s unilateral claim on the Ten Dash Line (previously known as the Nine Dash Line) overlapping with Indonesia's EEZ in North Natuna
it signaled a fundamental change to Indonesia’s policy on China’s territorial claim
which will impact the geopolitical climate in the region.
under former President Joko Widodo’s reign
has not acknowledged China’s unilateral Ten Dash Line claim
especially since it is not recognized in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
in which Indonesia and China are participating countries
the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 affirmed that China's unilateral claim is indeed not recognized in UNCLOS," he said
Yet the joint statement on November 9 has led Indonesia to acknowledge China's unilateral claim on the Ten Dash Line
Hikmahanto explained that joint development only occurs when each country mutually acknowledges the existence of overlapping maritime zones
The recognition of China's unilateral claim on the Ten Dash Line clearly does not align with the maritime boundary negotiations that Indonesia has been conducting
Indonesia has never engaged in maritime negotiations with China since it does not recognize the Ten Dash Line
Hikmahanto said countries that are in conflict with China over its territorial claims
possibly triggering tensions among ASEAN countries.
"Not to mention major countries that do not acknowledge China's unilateral claim because it affects international freedom of navigation
will be highly disappointed with Indonesia's standing," he said
this will change the political landscape in the region."
A joint development in North Natuna will greatly benefit China
“This diverges from President Prabowo's inaugural speech as president addressing the People's Consultative Assembly that Indonesia will not stand behind competing superpowers," he said
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its official statement on Monday, November 11, explained that this agreement lines up with the spirit of the Declaration of the Conduct of the Parties in the South China Sea, which was agreed upon by ASEAN countries and China in 2002
and the effort to create peace in the South China Sea region
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that this agreement cannot be interpreted as an acknowledgment of the Ten Dash Line
"Indonesia reaffirms its position that the Ten Dash claim has no international legal basis and is not in line with UNCLOS 1982
this cooperation does not affect Indonesia's sovereignty
or jurisdiction in the North Natuna Sea," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Professor of international law at the University of Indonesia (UI), Hikmahanto Juwana, urged the Indonesian government to reject the United States' proposal to relocate two million Palestinians
the discourse on relocating the Palestinian people is not in accordance with the Indonesian constitution
the rejection of the US proposal is in order to oppose the policy to perpetuate colonization on earth," said Juwana in a written statement on Tuesday
The Chancellor of Jenderal Ahmad Yani University said that Indonesian people who sympathize need to be more careful
This is because he considers the idea of relocating the Palestinian population could be a US strategy under President Trump to help Israel perpetuate Israeli colonization of Palestinian land
relocation could mean emptying Palestinian land from its own citizens
"The conflict in Palestine is actually a problem of illegal land occupation by the Zionist Israeli government," he said
the proposal came from Donald Trump's envoy
an official involved in the US leadership transition stated that Witkoff planned to visit Gaza to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire
While ensuring the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and discussions on the next phase
Trump and his team also noted the importance of a long-term solution to end the conflict in Gaza
"The question of how to rebuild Gaza remains unanswered
as well as where the estimated 2 million Palestinians could be relocated in the meantime
is one location that is being discussed for some of them," the transition official said
One of the issues currently being faced is the fate and whereabouts of the two million Palestinians in Gaza whose fate and whereabouts must be considered as Gaza's reconstruction proceeds
the Trump transition team acknowledged that the discourse is highly controversial among both Palestinians and Arabs in general
Many believe that relocation to another location would provide Israel with an excuse to expel Gazans from their homeland

Flooding has affected several areas in Demak Regency
The floods have been spreading further in the past few days
This recent flood disaster has been linked to the reappearance of the Muria Strait
a Geology Engineering lecturer from the UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM)
stated that the Muria Strait in Central Java would not reappear
and Pati were originally part of the Muria Strait
which transformed into low-lying areas around the 10th to 15th centuries
“The formation of these areas was due to sediment carried during repeated floods,” he explained on Monday (Mar
He mentioned that the Muria Strait would not resurface due to geological processes like the erosion of the Kendeng and Rembang Hill Ridges by the networks of the Tuntang River
and Juwana River still ongoing to this day
This condition has led to the silting up of the Muria Strait
This is not unusual because these low-lying areas were formed due to flood overflows,” he clarified
Husein explained that the sedimentation process of rivers generally occurs during floods
where sediment deposits accumulate as floodplains
and Juwana are low-lying areas resulting from flood sedimentation from the Tuntang
the disappearance of the Muria Strait and its transformation into low-lying areas today is due to floods from these three rivers
there’s no need to worry that Demak and its surroundings will become a sea again because these recurring floods bring sediment that forms low-lying areas,” he stated
especially land use changes due to urban growth
significantly impact the former low-lying Muria Strait area geologically
One of the geological impacts is land compaction for building construction and groundwater use
especially amid the increasing hydro-meteorological disasters currently occurring
Husein added that heavy and continuous rainfall could increase water discharge in upstream river areas
This could result in extreme flooding that persists for days
To anticipate extreme flooding in Demak and its surroundings
Husein believes the government needs to reassess dike capacity adjusted to potential extreme flood scenarios
it is hoped that the rivers can handle a larger water discharge without causing floods
“River normalization efforts have been conducted
but redesigning based on current conditions is necessary for the future,” he suggested
Husein mentioned the importance of regular monitoring and maintenance of dikes
This step is expected to prevent dike collapses at several points that could lead to river siltation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry on Monday said the reason the government has delegated the flight information region (FIR) above the Riau Islands under 37,000 feet to Singapore is for flight safety protection as the delegated area is close to the Changi Airport airspace.
“The delegation is needed as a consideration for flight safety,” said Transportation Ministry spokesperson Adita Irawati in a statement on January 31.
the Singaporean navigation operator is delegated 29 percent of the area
there are areas that continue to be served by AirNav Indonesia for flights from Batam and Tanjung Pinang Airport.
She said that it would be dangerous if the airspace below 37 percent cannot be delegated
which means planes taking off from Changi will immediately enter the FIR overseen by Jakarta
that Indonesia also manages flight navigation services in other countries' territories
such as Christmas Island and Timor Leste.
But of course we hope that suggestions and criticisms must be based on correct information
comprehensive and accurate analyses," she said.
This comes after the bilateral agreement was criticized by University of Indonesia professor Hikmahanto Juwana
who said that the agreement on FIR should not have taken place
The professor of international law said it potentially clashes with Indonesia’s Law No.1/2009 on aviation and must be evaluated.
“Because some areas within Indonesia’s sovereignty at the height from 0-37,000 are delegated to Singapore's aviation authority,” Hikmahanto wrote in a statement on Monday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Professor of International Law at the University of Indonesia, Hikmahanto Juwana, said that negotiations between the Indonesian government and the United States over Donald Trump's import tariffs policies are unlikely to produce results
Hikmahanto noted that the presence or absence of an Indonesian ambassador to the United States would not influence the talks
He added that Indonesia’s desire to negotiate stems from the fact that around 50 other countries have already sent negotiation teams to the U.S
and also in Asia are affected," Hikmahanto told Tempo on Monday
He emphasized that the import tariffs imposed on Indonesia and other countries are no longer open for negotiation
Donald Trump is trying to demonstrate "How to Make America Great Again," and one of his strategies involves tightening control over international trade
President Prabowo Subianto assigned one coordinating minister and two other ministers to form a lobbying team to negotiate with the US government regarding the 32 percent import tariffs
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that he
along with Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and Foreign Minister Sugiono
Airlangga said the government will also send an official letter to the U.S
government regarding this negotiation plan
The government's lobbying team will negotiate with U.S
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and the United States Trade Representative
President Donald Trump would be conducted to discuss the import tariff issues imposed on Indonesia
"We will convey that we want good relations
we must respect," said Prabowo in a speech at a harvest festival in Majalengka
President Donald Trump introduced a new import tariff policy known as "Reciprocal Tariffs" or the Trump tariff
The policy imposes additional duties on imported goods from multiple countries
including several in Asia such as Indonesia
During the announcement at the White House's Rose Garden on Wednesday afternoon local time
Trump said the United States would apply a minimum 10 percent import tariff on all incoming products
Furthermore, certain countries will be subject to higher reciprocal tariffs as part of this new policy
The amount of Trump's tariffs on Asian countries varies
Cambodia is the Asian country with the highest tariff
Singapore is only subject to a 10 percent tariff
Taiwan and Indonesia are both subject to a 32 percent tariff

"Before leaving for the sea, it feels a bit sad to leave the family," Dimas said. "But this is our job, so we have to do it."
"Because of the waves, my boat once leaked and I and other fishermen had to drain the water overnight so it didn't get higher," Dimas said. His colleague, Mohamad Hadi Susilo said bad weather is the most common challenge he faces while fishing in Arafura.
"If I face such bad weather, I can only pray," said Hadi. While waiting for the calm weather to return, he said, fishermen usually pull over into the lee side of a nearby island. "But even that is now uncertain how long the weather will return to normal," said the 30-year-old.
However, extreme seasonal changes have resulted in predictions of the appearance of the Waluku Star or the Constellation Orion, which are the benchmarks for determining the seasons, often missed. "We still often use 'ilmu titen' when we go to sea, but now it's often not appropriate," said Dimas.
Hadi said the loss due to the erratic weather was substantial for fishermen. "Losses can reach billions in a season," he said. For one season, a group of fishermen and the ship owner must spend around Rp3 billion for supplies and other needs. When bad weather hits, they do not work while their supplies such as diesel and food run low.
Hadi said that although he still often uses traditional methods to predict the weather, his team also follows weather predictions from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). "But even then it is sometimes not right. For example, high waves are predicted to come today, but in reality, it could be a day sooner or later. We at sea are confused," he said.
Sugeng Nugroho, administrator of the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen Association (KNTI) said many members have complained about the sudden bad weather at sea increasing the risk of accidents. "We often receive reports of incidents of boat sinking, boats leaking or breaking because of the waves. Not only in the deep sea east of Indonesia, but similar incidents often occur in other marine areas," said Sugeng.
Although research must be carried out to find more detailed data and facts, Sugeng believes that the climate crisis has negatively affected fishermen's work, increasing the difficulty of fishing as well as the risk of accidents at sea. Recently, for example, KM Setia Makmur sank in the waters of Arafura in July. Of the 21 crew members, seven survived and 14 remain missing and are presumed drowned. Reports said that bad weather and high waves were the main factors.
According to WALHI, the climate crisis has also limited the time fishermen are able to go to sea, cutting it to six months per year, cutting into their income, and impairing their social and economic lives, causing some to switch professions. According to KKP data, the number of Indonesian fishermen in 2017, estimated at 2.67 million, declined to 2.64 million in 2018 and 2.39 million in 2019.
The sun was just rising when 'KM Satria Tambah Makmur' took Dimas and Hadi away from the beach. The days are tiring, boring, and perhaps stressful they will pass throughout this fishing season. However, when the net is full of fish, said Dimas, it is a happy time. "Maybe the challenges ahead for fishermen will be more difficult. But what I can do now, I will do my best."

The night was getting late but a group of fishermen were still busy preparing equipment and supplies for the 250-gross tonne KM Satria Tambah Makmur, docked at Juwana Harbor in Central Java. The head of the ship's engine room, 25-year-old Dimas Bagaskara went back and forth to check the supplies of fuel and safety equipment that they would take to sail the next day. Occasionally he joked with his comrades just to keep them awake.

Data from the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) state that the climate crisis has resulted in an increase in the number of deaths of fishermen
At least 251 fishermen died at sea in 2020
almost three times compared to 2010 which was only 86. Data from the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) show the incidence of accidents at sea in the 2018-2020 period is dominated by fishing vessels
which accounted for 31 percent of the 76 accidents
this is thought to be an iceberg phenomenon

He is one of 5 candidates running for the 3
NJ — There is a contested race for the Bernards Township Board of Education election this upcoming November election with five candidates vying for the three open seats
Stephanus "Iwan" Juwana is one of five candidates running for the three
three-year seats in the election being held on Tuesday
The other four candidates include: Suzanne Schafer Skalski
Here is a look at who Juwana is and why he is running
Candidates were asked to answer the same questions and each candidate profile will be posted on Patch's site as it gets closer to the election
My name is Stephanus "Iwan" Juwana and I am running for Bernards Township BOE
We were drawn to Bernards Township in 2016 by its highly-rated school system
and community spirit of "small-town U.S." We feel very fortunate to live in a community where people value education and neighbors help neighbors; a town where we are proudly raising our twin sons and daughter
Our sons are currently attending Cedar Hill elementary school
I have worked at several investment firms as a senior analyst and co-portfolio manager
I work as a senior industry analyst for a risk management firm focusing on retail credit analysis
in Finance from Southern Methodist University in Dallas

Should I be fortunate enough to become a BOE member, I will hit the ground running in January 2020. I would be honored to have your support, your faith in me, and your vote on Nov. 5. Visit juwanaforboe.com for more information
Being a Bernards Township resident and father of two elementary school children
I care about the integrity and management of our school district
I want to make sure that the school district has a balanced budget that does not cut into vital resources which will compromise the quality of education
The bottom line: Bernards Township school district must be competitive without sacrificing quality
I observed that the school budget has risen cumulatively by 9.3 percent while enrollment has declined by 10.5 percent
There should be a positive correlation between a rise in enrollment and an increased budget
and have confidence that their money is being used wisely
we need to address challenges and explore opportunities in all areas of academic
and special education to enable our students to meet the challenges of tomorrow
I would like to be an advocate for your children in all areas covered under the school district umbrella such as curriculum
the pending drop or A/B schedule as well as the school construction at Ridge High School and more
we should also have appropriate expectations of our children while being sensitive to the stresses they feel
Why do you feel you are qualified for this position
I want to be a voice for all of those I represent in the community and I do not take this opportunity lightly
I want to help ALL students to succeed in life regardless of their home environment
As my children are still in elementary school
I am committed to being here for the long haul
We have a great district filled with diversity
and I want to be a unifier in taking down labels and opening lines of communication for the common good
my finance skills and diverse background make me well-suited to play an active role in maintaining and improving the school’s academic standards of excellence

enjoying the tasty crustaceans has become a hot trend
as more restaurants with names like The Holy Crab and Cut the Crab open up
While crab meat is not yet a big part of the traditional Indonesian diet
Crabs are very popular in China and the United States
the two largest consumers of crab in the world
more than half of the crabs exported from Indonesia have been going to the US
the nation exported crabs worth US$262 million to the US
more than other large exporters such as China
But humans are not the only ones who like to devour these decapods
That unfortunate tendency to eat each other means we have to work even harder to find new ways to breed them
It’s notoriously difficult to hatch and rear crabs
even when the only available prey is their own brothers and sisters
over reliance on wild crabs is diminishing the stock
The Indonesian government recently released a new regulation limiting the size of crabs that may be caught
as well as banning the trapping of females carrying eggs
But to help address the reduction in the number and size of wild crabs
it would be good if farmers could find more ways to hatch and rear crabs
At the Research Centre for Oceanography we have been looking for inexpensive ways to effectively cultivate mud crabs and blue swimmer crabs
which could be adopted by local people who already make their livelihood through fish-farming
The four species of mud crabs – Scylla serrata
Portunus pelagicus – are all good eating crabs
Because of the difficulty of hatching and rearing crabs
they catch them in the wild with bottom gill nets and pots
Any crab farming in Indonesia has generally focused solely on crab fattening: taking crabs from the wild and putting them into traditional brackish water ponds to feed until they are saleable
Aquaculture has been practised in Indonesia since around CE 1400
when people began trapping milk-fish in coastal ponds
often using methods that have changed little over the centuries
But crab aquaculture is a much more recent development
Unlike aquaculture projects overseas that often focus on large-scale capital-intensive and highly automated industries
This is partly because of the limited research-funding available
but also because of a desire to ensure that traditional fishers are not displaced in the interest of efficiency but
we’ve developed ways to house newly hatched crabs individually in cheap plastic cups
The most common kinds of water cups proved too low
But it turns out that taller juice cups are just right
We also tested a variety of feeding regimes to fatten the crabs
along with the addition of fish oils and sources of calcium
The fish diet increased the growth rates of the crabs more than shrimp
Access to such information will allow farmers to improve the growth rate of their crabs
This will also prevent crabs from being dependent on one kind of diet
Farmers will be able to vary the food they give the crabs depending on the seasonal availability of different fish
These two simple things – using cheap juice cups to individually house the crabs and feeding them with different formulated diets – allows fishermen to breed crabs from eggs of the female crabs
Blue swimmer crabs can be cultured with herbivorous fishes in saltwater
from six to eight months in a brackish water pond
Because of the lack of a reliable source of reared crablets
crabs have not been a major part of aquaculture
many farmers concentrate on fish such as milk-fish Chanos chanos and tilapia Oreochromis spp
To get fishermen trying out crab aquaculture
we’ve encouraged them to experiment rearing both milk-fish and crabs in ponds where only milk-fish were reared previously
The stock had to be fed daily with two different kinds of feed for the crabs and the fish
making it more labor-intensive than monoculture-farming
But the advantages are two crops can be raised and harvested simultaneously and
because they are all placed within the nets
Controlling crab density to avoid cannibalism was a new concept for farmers
it was also novel to find out new technical tricks
such as how to control salinity – a problem that needs to be overcome as the salt content of ponds changes with the seasons and crabs are particularly sensitive to salinity levels
Developing research projects with farmers enables them to continue to farm in their local ponds
It also lets them draw on the results of research
enabling them to be more productive and sustainable
more people not only in Indonesia but in other parts of the world can enjoy delicious crab meals for decades to come

Few mother-daughter activities involve helmets and fishnets
both are part of a regular uniform that also includes roller skates and elbow pads
has been skating for the Cincinnati Rollergirls roller derby team under the name "Juwana Hurt" since 2007
she became the first daughter of a Rollergirl to become part of the adult team
They haven't gotten to skate together yet – Carly will skate with the junior varsity team
Lisa is recovering from an off-track injury and isn't sure when she'll be able to skate again – but they hope to both be on the roster some time this season
"Most people don't get to do something like this
We'll do alright; we'll smack some people around."
joining roller derby was simply a way to get back on her skates
A childhood friend from her skating days took her to a Rollergirls bout in December 2006
and she was "hooked." Her interest quickly trickled down to her daughters
I bought them skates," Lisa said of her daughters: Carly
(That team practices at The Skatin' Place in Colerain
the same rink where their mom speed skated in the '70s and '80s.)
Carly joins Cincinnati Rollergirls in the team's ninth season
which is celebrating its 65th anniversary year
"I feel like the team is much different than any other sports team."
"And you get to dress so different," her mother pointed out
"How often do you get to wear fishnets except for Halloween?"
The Cincinnati Rollergirls' home schedule includes five doubleheaders:
Tickets: $12, $10 advance. Trackside: $17, $15 advance; ages 7-12: $6, $5 advance; 6 and younger free. 800-745-3000, Ticketmaster.com

CINCINNATI — A rising number of families are experiencing homelessness in the region as the proportion of families receiving help is shrinking
Four organizations serving as the region’s largest service network for homeless families presented 2024 data to Cincinnati City Council’s Equitable Growth and Housing Committee Tuesday, shedding light on a growing gap in the amount of services that can be offered to families. (Find a copy of the presentation here.)
only 38.2% of families in need of shelter received emergency shelter
“That total percentage who are getting nothing has only gotten bigger,” said Kevin Finn
president of Strategies to End Homelessness
expensive child care and loss of rental assistance vouchers are all playing a role in the increase in need
“When the market does not have enough availability
that means families stay in shelter longer,” she said
limiting how many families can be served over the year
The struggle for families is compounded by the rising cost of living
good-earning employment are struggling to make ends meet: "We have people who come to our shelter who are going to work every day on eight- and 10-hour shifts at nursing homes."
A job that’s growing in popularity among mothers in the shelter system is a State Tested Nursing Aide (STNA)
But Burge said despite a gross monthly income of $2,500
affording the average rent for two bedrooms at $1,300 consumes more than half of the family’s pre-tax earnings
many shelter residents still find themselves trapped in a cycle of instability
"Even when they're working really hard and doing everything they can to get back into and stay in housing
and that's what it comes down to," Burge said
Figuring out exactly who needs help is another challenge
“Families who are homeless are often invisible,” said Peg Dierkers
“They stay in places where they are not visible because they are afraid of losing their children … They may be staying in a car in a neighborhood
in a health system bathroom or waiting room
or in an abandoned building that is really uninhabitable,” she said
Chief Program Officer at the YWCA Greater Cincinnati: “Our goal is to truly break that cycle.”

A backlash has begun in Indonesia against the granting of clemency to Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby
An international law expert at the prestigious University of Indonesia
said the original 20-year sentence had been consistent with Indonesians' strong views on smuggling
"Don’t let external pressure affect our stance," he said
It was revealed yesterday that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed a clemency letter on May 15
reducing the 34-year-old's Corby's sentence by five years
Professor Hikmahanto said if it was going to reduce Corby's sentence
the Indonesian government should have asked for something in return from Australia
"Clemency is not just about legal jurisdiction
the government should ask for something political in return from Australia
The government should show the public that they are strong and not bowing to pressure from the Australian government," he said
The professor was reflecting a widely held belief here that foreigners should not be given special treatment in the Indonesian judicial system
and that Indonesian people smugglers in Australian jails should be part of any deal to release Corby
the head of Indonesian anti-drug organisation Granat
accused the president of giving up Indonesia's sovereignty and of being inconsistent
Previously the president has said he would not give clemency to criminals who had committed the most serious crimes
"This inconsistency hurts the public’s feelings of justice
About 50 Indonesians are killed due to drugs every day
He said clemency for Corby would set a bad precedent because other countries may also ask the same for their citizens
"What if other countries ask the same
because Indonesians are behind bars in other countries
And what about Indonesians who are behind bars
The government should show the public that they are strong and not bowing to pressure from the Australian government
don’t sacrifice the nation’s sovereignty."
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has denied there was any deal
even though Mr Yudhoyono signed the release just two days before Australia’s Attorney General Nicola Roxon announced the release of three under-age Indonesian people smugglers
The Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa
who suggested an idea of a prisoner swap to a group of Australian newspaper editors last week
saying: "It is a completely legal matter."
two Indonesian ministers had suggested that there was a link between the two issues
State secretariat minister Sudi Silalahi said the president had signed Ms Corby's clemency letter hoping that "Australia will reciprocate with Indonesian prisoners"
law and human rights minister Amir Syamsuddin said he thought the clemency would "give a signal to the Australian government"
he said there had been no specific deal to reciprocate
said the original 20-year sentence had been consistent with Indonesians' strong views on smuggling

“I hope lash extensions become more of a trend

“I hope lash extensions become more of a trend, like getting your nails done,” says Rinta Juwana, owner of LashLove NYC
She saw enough demand at her Affina Nail & Spa on Fulton Street (which has a sister salon on Church Street) to open LashLove NYC
a boutique salon dedicated to eyelash extensions
Where Affina has one bed for the treatment
you receive a consultation about what you’re looking for and what works best for your face
and material; there are synthetic and real options
The lashes are then individually attached with glue—a new set takes around 75 minutes
with touch-ups recommended every one-to-three weeks
there are practical benefits to go along with the aesthetic ones: “Lash extensions make your daily makeup ritual easier because there’s no longer any need for mascara or curling.”
P.S. For more on Juwana, read this Q&A she did with Anojja Shah back in 2011.
LashLove NYC is at 130 Church (between Warren and Murray), 212-349-5274, lashlovenyc.com
it was not much of a luxury to get your nails done in the late 80s/early 90s
Everyone got their nails done even back then
I lived in Kips Bay/Murray Hill in the early 90s and there were nail salons every 2-3 blocks
As a recent college grad making peanuts in 1990
I was still able to get my nails done on a regular basis and didn’t think it was a luxury…more like a necessity
Now more than ever I find stories about recent immigrants’ experiences are important to read and share

The film packs about as much punch as an urban Afterschool Special (something about a man needing to wear heels in order to learn the meaning of teamwork)
which means Juwanna Mann is more Just One of the Guys than Weird Science

ATLANTIC CITY — For most of the murals created in the resort and sponsored by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation during the past three years
the artists were given leeway on subjects and in how they expressed themselves
When the organization decided it wanted to pay an artist to create a mural in the image of a specific individual for the first time
the subject selected was the late Madame Sara Spencer Washington
Washington founded the Apex News and Hair Company in the resort and was one of America’s first Black millionaires
Her mural is located on the exterior of a building on the southeast corner of Atlantic Avenue and Dr
The Arts Foundation has wanted to have murals painted that depict something from the resort’s history
but it wasn’t until the foundation was approached by Avanzar
Avanzar and the Arts Foundation partnered to create the mural depicting Washington as part of its 48 Blocks AC initiative and as part of Avanzar’s educational initiative called “Girls as Leaders.”
ATLANTIC CITY — The Atlantic City Arts Foundation is still creating murals in the city amid …
“No one can contest that she was a great asset,” said Hagen
“She had a philanthropic past and gave a lot back to the community.”

inherited the family’s collection of photographs
Scott donated a large part of the collection to the Library of Congress
but he selected the images to be among those chosen for the mural
The reference photo is from a 1935 issue of Apex News and Hair Magazine when Washington was 46
The photo the mural is based on is a striking image that shows his aunt as happy but determined
“I sent BK Foxx (the muralist) 20 images of Madame
her factory and promotional photos,” Scott said
“The result is outstanding in my humble opinion.”
Scott thought some type of visual commemoration of his aunt was a longtime coming in the resort
“I was familiar with the foundation,” said Scott about the Atlantic City Arts Foundation
Scott was in the resort in February when he showed his award-winning documentary “The Sara Spencer Washington Story” at Stockton University
The event also included the presentation of the first Sara Spencer Washington Scholarship
created by Stockton Professor of Chemistry Kelly Keenan to support a biochemistry/molecular biology major
Foxx was last in the resort in May 2019 painting with the Arts Foundation and its mural festival
She also painted the “Not for Sale” wall at Georgia and Pacific avenues
Foxx doesn’t often paint historical figures
She uses spray paint and completed the mural last month
the difficulty in painting it was using such an old reference photo
There’s no resolution in photos taken 100 years ago
so to blow that up 1,000 times life size is quite a challenge,” Foxx said
Foxx is pretty methodical in the way she works
so she usually plans ahead and tries to work out all the kinks in advance of actually showing up to physically paint a project
Foxx had no idea who Washington was before being commissioned to work on the mural
One of the interesting things about her job
is that she learns all kinds of things she wouldn’t normally from having such individual and varied projects
“I learned a lot about her during the whole process,” said Foxx about Washington
“It doesn’t make a difference in the physical painting for me
knowing who it is — but it makes a big difference in how I feel about painting it before and after I’m finished
Feeling a sense of purpose for it and relevance is important for me.”
