Jakarta - The new moon phenomenon on July 6
has the potential to increase the maximum tidal height
which can cause coastal flooding in several Indonesian waters
Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the timing for this tidal flooding potential is different in each region
BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center chief Eko Prasetyo said that in general
tidal flooding will affect community activities around ports and coasts
such as loading and unloading activities in ports
as well as salt pond operations and inland fishing
"The public is advised to always be vigilant and alert to anticipate the impact of the maximum seawater tide and to pay attention to updated maritime weather information from BMKG," Eko said in a written statement
Eko said flooding in North Sumatra's Belawan coast and surrounding areas could occur from July 3 to 6
based on water level monitoring data and tidal forecasts
"For the coast of Riau Islands on the coast of Karimun
Eko said the potential for tidal flooding would also occur on the west and south coasts of Banten on July 3-8
"On the north coast of Central Java on July 7-13," he said
Tidal flooding may also occur in the port of Surabaya
For the north coast of Jakarta on July 3-9
Tidal flooding is also possible on the coast of Flores Island
the coast of Sabu-Raijua on July 3-7; and the coast of West Kalimantan on July 6-10

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) assesses that the Supermoon phenomenon that coincides with the perigee momentum (closest distance between moon and earth) on August 20
the agency expects tidal flooding to sweep several coastal areas in Indonesia.

said the affected regions range from the coastal areas of North Sumatra
tidal flooding can affect coastal communities and activities such as the loading and unloading of goods
He urged to the public to stay informed about maritime weather forecasts and information from BMKG
"Always be vigilant to anticipate the impact of maximum sea water tides," he said in a written statement
BMKG mapped out several locations at risk of tidal flooding this week:
Coastal areas of North Sumatra including Medan Belawan Coast
especially the Jakarta northern coastal region
Tidal flooding period: August 23-26 August 2024
especially the north coast of Central Java
Tidal flooding period: August 19 and 29-31
Coastal areas of East Java including Surabaya Port Coast
Coastal areas of Papua including North Jayapura Coast and Biak Numfor Coast
