Nearly 50 Palestinians were killed Thursday in an Israeli airstrike on a building opposite the headquarters of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip

WHO is appalled by yesterday’s raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital
which put the last major health facility in North Gaza out of service
The systematic dismantling of the health system and a siege for over 80 days on North Gaza puts the lives of the 75,000 Palestinians remaining in the area at risk
Initial reports indicate that some areas of the hospital were burnt and severely damaged during the raid
twelve patients and a female health staff were reportedly forced to evacuate to destroyed and non-functional Indonesian Hospital where it is not possible to provide any care
stable patients and companions were moved to a nearby location
some people were reportedly stripped and forced to walk toward southern Gaza
the area around the hospital has remained highly volatile and attacks on the hospitals and on health workers have occurred almost daily
bombardments in its vicinity reportedly killed 50 people
including five health workers from Kamal Adwan Hospital
50 caregivers and 20 health workers were transferred to Indonesian Hospital
which lacks the necessary equipment and supplies to provide adequate care
The movement and treatment of these critical patients under such conditions pose grave risks to their survival
WHO is deeply concerned for their wellbeing
as well as for the Kamal Adwan Hospital director who has been reportedly detained during the raid
WHO lost contact with him since the raid began
WHO and partners' efforts to sustain the hospitals’ operations have been undone
With Kamal Adwan and Indonesian hospitals entirely out of service
and Al-Awda Hospital barely able to function
and severely damaged due to recent airstrikes
the healthcare lifeline for those in North Gaza is reaching a breaking point.
WHO calls for urgently ensuring that hospitals in North Gaza can be supported to become functional again.
Hospitals have once again become battlegrounds
reminiscent of the destruction of the health system in Gaza City earlier this year
WHO has repeatedly issued urgent calls to protect health workers and hospitals as per international humanitarian law —yet these calls remain unheard
workers and patients are always off limits
They must be actively protected and never be attacked
distinction and proportionality under International Humanitarian Law are absolute and always apply.

The BJP on Sunday demanded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ensure the expulsion of Jagdish Tytler
Kamal Nath and Sam Pitroda from the party if he actually felt the 1984 anti-Sikh riots were wrong
The Congress leader pointed out that he had publicly acknowledged what happened in the 1980s was “wrong”
(HT File) Asked about the riots and the Congress’ relationship with the Sikh community during an interactive session in the US
Gandhi said the party committed a lot of “mistakes” when he was not there and asserted
he was more than happy to take responsibility for everything it had done wrong
The Congress leader pointed out that he had publicly acknowledged what happened in the 1980s was “wrong”
He made the remarks on April 21 at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University
“If he actually meant what he said and is willing to take responsibility for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots
He should also expel Sam Piroda who had said ‘hua toh hua (whatever happened happened)’ about the riots.”
Such a half-hearted response will not be enough,” he told PTI
“If you really feel that a mistake was committed
Kamal Nath and Sam Pitroda from the Congress
a Sikh student had asked Gandhi what attempts he was making to reconcile with the Sikh community and referred to the 1984 riots
The student had also referred to Gandhi’s remark during an earlier US visit that the fight he was fighting was about whether Sikhs would be allowed to wear a turban in India or not
Posting that segment of the interaction on X on Saturday
the BJP’s IT department chief Amit Malviya said
a young man tells Rahul Gandhi to his face
reminding him of the unfounded fear-mongering he engaged in during his last visit to the US.”
“It is quite unprecedented that Rahul Gandhi is now being ridiculed not just in India

leading to the deaths of five medical staff members
Israeli military detonated explosive-laden robots near the hospital's vicinity

and medical staff—to gather in the hospital courtyard

who was present at Kamal Adwan Hospital at the time
Dozens of medical staff and injured individuals were also detained after being forced to remove their clothing and have their hands tied behind their backs
all while being subjected to threats and insults"
"The military brought three hospital vehicles
loading approximately 20 patients in each along with a few nurses
uncovered truck and transported to the Indonesian Hospital
we found seven injured individuals with no medical staff to care for them
Following the events at Kamal Adwan Hospital
Israeli forces targeted the upper floors of Al-Awda Specialized Hospital in Tal Al-Zaatar
The attack caused significant material damage to the hospital
leading to the evacuation of most injured individuals and medical staff to Gaza City via Salah Al-Din Street in the eastern part of the governorate
some were unable to evacuate due to the heavy shelling and direct gunfire
Israeli forces targeted the top floor of the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City with an artillery shell
The attack caused extensive damage to the hospital's radiology department and its medical equipment
Israeli warplanes struck the upper floors of Al-Wafaa Hospital
The hospital primarily serves critical cases and the elderly
and completely destroyed the physical therapy unit
According to the hospital's maintenance and emergency director
several medical students were among the injured
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the ongoing Israeli genocidal practices in Gaza
particularly the systematic and deliberate targeting of healthcare facilities
These attacks form part of a broader strategy aimed at dismantling Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure
leaving thousands of civilians—many critically injured—without access to medical care
The situation is exacerbated by the severely limited flow of humanitarian and medical aid into Gaza
Al Mezan calls for the immediate release of Kamal Adwan Hospital's staff and director
and holds Israeli forces accountable for their safety
particularly the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide must take urgent and effective measures to halt the ongoing genocide
These measures should include the imposition of a two-way arms embargo on Israel
supporting the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants against Israeli officials
and ensuring full compliance with the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) provisional measures
Without an immediate resumption of aid deliveries
and life-saving supplies needed to sustain many of its programmes in Gaza

Kamal-Deen Abdullai
is barely functioning after weeks of sustained Israeli assault
the Israeli army closed in on the hospital — which had already been subjected to a military raid in December 2023 — and began bombing the building and its courtyards
destroying medical supplies that the World Health Organization (WHO) had delivered in the previous days
The attack also cut off the hospital’s medical oxygen generator
resulting in the deaths of two infants in the intensive care unit
ordering all patients and displaced Palestinians seeking refuge there to gather in the central courtyard
Hundreds were arrested or detained and subjected to questioning
Israeli troops withdrew from the hospital on Oct. 28, and scores of victims from Israel’s continued attacks on the north have since flooded its waiting rooms and hallways. The hospital is currently accommodating more than 120 patients, but Abu Safiya is one of only two doctors and a handful of nurses left to care for them
wounding staff and patients and damaging water tanks
The interview has been edited for length and clarity
Can you describe what is happening now at Kamal Adwan and the danger that you
we have been suffering greatly from a shortage of medical supplies
We have been appealing to international health organizations to save the hospital
but unfortunately we have been subjected instead to an intense siege and direct shelling for nearly a month
the third floor of the hospital was targeted
I do not know if it was artillery shelling or an airstrike
but the operating room and medicine stores were set on fire
The bombing of Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun, and Jabalia does not stop, and there are many wounded people arriving at the hospital, either carried on people’s shoulders or in animal-drawn carts
Ambulances are completely out of service after the Israeli army repeatedly targeted them
Because the number of wounded people [arriving at the hospital] is so high
we are forced to choose between them in order to treat the most severe cases
I never imagined that we would live such tragic moments inside the hospital
What happened to you and the medical staff when Israel raided the hospital on Oct
The Israeli army does not know what it wants
They detained me for a few hours and interrogated me about whether there were fighters inside the hospital
and demanded that I evacuate the hospital completely
but I refused and assured them that there were only patients inside the hospital
But 57 of the hospital’s medical staff were arrested
and we still do not know anything about them [some have been released following this conversation
but the majority remain in Israeli detention]
So we are suffering from a severe shortage of doctors
we only have pediatricians — it is a huge challenge to work under these circumstances
I refused to leave the hospital and sacrifice my patients
I saw him die at the entrance gate — it was a great shock
I found a grave for him near one of the hospital’s walls
The army has justified its attacks by claiming
that Hamas fighters are operating from within the hospital or in tunnels beneath it
What is your response to these accusations
There are no [active] fighters in Kamal Adwan
this is a hospital that receives patients from everywhere: we do not stand at the hospital gate and ask every wounded or sick person about their political affiliation
The hospital’s job is to provide medical services to all patients who need treatment
We have lived through many wars, but we have never experienced anything like this: a war that crossed all red lines, where we cannot see any capacity of international humanitarian, judicial, or health institutions to intervene to stop it. Everything was permissible to kill and destroy, and what the health system in Gaza experienced is unprecedented
Can you describe the damage the hospital has sustained from repeated bombing
The hospital was and remains severely damaged as a result of the army’s attacks
Most of the hospital’s departments are destroyed
including the operating room on the third floor
The bombing around the hospital does not stop
We are very concerned about the continued targeting of the hospital
[which we see as] a deliberate attempt to take it out of service
I appeal again to the world to save the hospital and release the doctors from detention
We are a health institution that serves patients
whose conditions continue to deteriorate due to the lack of medicines
but the army does not agree to release them
We are doing what we can and we will never stop
I will not back down from delivering my humanitarian message: my profession is my duty
I will stay inside the hospital until the last moment
