The Head of SMM Yogyakarta, Agus Suranto, did not expect that Putri's performance would be so excellent on the world stage. According to him, all these achievements are the result of Putri's hard work all this time. His team cannot express their admiration for her performance in words. "This is something very valuable and becomes a spirit for all of us. We can only be grateful, proud, and touched. There are no other words. Pride is also not only owned by SMM, but also the whole of Indonesia. That's the main thing," Agus said. Agus revealed that the school he leads has never differentiated its students. All students are seen as having their own uniqueness and excellence. Therefore, Putri, who is classified as visually impaired, is also considered equal to other students. Instead, teachers are asked to adjust their learning methods according to each student's abilities. According to Agus, Putri’s advantage lies in her ability to create songs. Several times, Agus was asked by Putri to comment on her students’ songs. However, he couldn't quite remember the titles of the songs that Putri had showcased to him. According to him, Putri can always create songs honestly. He believes that Putri’s limitations in observing actually become her weapon in creating songs. "When he creates a song, even the simplest melody becomes gold. Why? Because he does not have visual memory. His nature is only audio and music. He can express various emotions through the melodies he creates," said Agus. Bagaimana mungkin sebuah kekuatan lain, apapun basis alasannya, mengambil alih peran penegakan hukum?” tanya Lies. walk home from the market one afternoon in the southern Timorese border town of Suai my ears pick up the sound of the famous dangdut song ‘Pacaran lagi’ (Dating again) A group of Timorese children are putting on an impromptu concert in a tree overhanging an old burnt-out building from Indonesian times The tree sways dangerously as 20 pairs of hips gyrate The volume increases as they realise that a foreigner is watching given that these children must all be under the age of eight which means they have been born in independent None of them could keep up a conversation in Indonesian yet each word of the song comes out loud and clear On the other side of the country in Los Palos I enter a home one night to see an extended family glued to the TV They are watching an episode of Indonesian soap opera featuring Jakarta slang Ramadan jokes and young funky Indonesian actors The images on the screen seem so distant from life in this poor rural village at the edge of East Timor but for the people watching there is a sense of connection the prevalence of popular Indonesian music and images in East Timor makes it easy to think that you are in Indonesia Indonesian music blares out of loud-speakers satellite dishes streaming Indonesian TV are spread across the country and posters with pictures of Indonesian pop stars line walls and microlet minibuses often sponsored by leading Indonesian cigarette brands such as Peter Pan in 2005 or Slank in 2008 The streets are lined from the airport to the stadium with people waiting to get a glimpse of the rock stars It takes hours of dangerous pushing to get a place inside the jam-packed Dili stadium to see the band or just to see what all the commotion is about but everybody from young children to old women; even Xanana Gusmão The easy access to popular culture affects the way young people in East Timor speak Indonesian Despite the use of formal Indonesian in the high school and university curricula young people tend to speak the cool slang of Jakarta that they have learnt from Indo-pop and phrases like ‘capek deh’ (‘I’m over it’) and ‘kasihan da lu’ (a sarcastic ‘you poor thing’ with matching hand gestures) have entered daily Tetum street vernacular Why is Indonesian pop culture so popular with people who fought hard for independence from Indonesia emerging artists from the Arte Moris Free Art School in Dili explained to me that Indonesian popular culture is something everybody can relate to They see Indonesian pop as telling stories that are very close to their own lives the influence of conservative religion on relationships arranged marriages and issues of poverty are key themes of the shows and the pop-songs Indonesian pop culture also gives people room to see and to dream about the completely ‘other’ world of big cities and the upper class elite of Jakarta Timorese can understand the words of Indonesian music and television which is less often the case with similar Portuguese pop For these reasons Indonesian popular culture provides a form of entertainment and escapism It is not surprising that pop culture provides an escape from the hardship of daily subsistence and high unemployment in East Timor There is little access to reading material Television and most local radio stations air Timorese or Portuguese based content but they have only limited broadcasting hours and a limited range of low-quality local radio and television productions All of this means that there is little to keep people’s attention with the increasing accessibility and affordability of ‘parabola’ satellite TV and the sale of cheap Indonesian VCDs and cassettes Indonesian pop culture has remained popular over the last ten years There is also a common fear that Indonesian language skills will be lost and many parents are actively encouraging their young children to watch Indonesian TV and learn Indonesian songs in the hope that by doing so they will learn Indonesian Maintaining Indonesian language skills is seen as important for future education and work opportunities in Indonesia Aziby and Xisto do not see their appreciation of Indonesian television or music as making them any less Timorese it is no different from watching or listening to media from elsewhere in the world They choose to watch Timorese programs when they are on but among the international shows on offer the Indonesian programs have the advantage because they do not need to be subtitled they prefer Indonesian TV to the Portuguese shows that are broadcast on the national television station This may be the result of a lack of comprehension differences in culture or the ambiguous position of the Portuguese language in East Timor Aziby and Xisto also touch on the sense of nostalgia for the former friendships between the colonisers and the colonised that can be found in most post-colonial societies They recall that Indonesians were often happy to enter the kitchens of Timorese people and eat with them while Portuguese were never interested in doing so Indonesian television and music can evoke bad memories it may remind them of good times and of their cultural and physical closeness to their neighbour It may also give them a sense of being part of a region something that they do not get from western pop culture The presence and popularity of Indonesian music and television in East Timor has not weakened the development or the popularity of Timorese popular culture Cinco De Oriente and Rai Nain regularly attract big crowds and enjoy a high profile on local radio Television shows such as Istoria ba Futuru (History for the Future) and Estrella – East Timor’s version of the ‘Idol’ phenomenon - are popular viewing caused a storm the first time it was screened in 2005 The show was put together using funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) The funding was enough for one 8 episode season The actors were from the well known Bibi-Bulak performance troupe Roza explored issues of domestic violence and gender though it was short lived and did not match the standards of Indonesian cinetron For the first time Timorese stories in Tetum similar Timorese TV shows have been few and far between Support and standards for local artists are limited The ability of artists to create an album or TV production let alone one that matches the standards of the Indonesian pop-industry juggernaut is limited by a lack of skills and infrastructure to support a popular entertainment industry in East Timor The lack of production and distribution outlets mean that it is difficult for artists to create or release work publicly TVTL is still only broadcasting a few hours of Timorese content a day with the majority being focused on government or public education when TVTL has been approached by local production houses offering to create work free of charge TVTL has clearly stated that they will only screen something if the production house can pay for screening or find independent funding to cover screening costs and that such productions must fit into public education agendas This means that production houses and artists are limited to creating productions that suit development donors and government The limited legal framework for artists is another barrier to the development of the Timorese pop industry East Timor does not have copyright laws or the means to protect artists’ rights Members of the Timorese band Galaxy independently recorded their new album using money they had saved from years of performing concerned about releasing their album in East Timor out of fear that they will lose all rights to their work due to mass copying the common practice of people re-recording other people’s songs and the lack of protection for artistic licences Furthermore they will struggle to sell their album at a price that will cover production costs because of the prevalence of cheap Indonesian pirated CDs for sale in East Timor The continued presence of Indonesian popular culture in East Timor after independence demonstrates a reality that is often ignored by Timorese politicians There are strong cultural links with Indonesia that continue to grow There are increasing Indonesia/East Timor collaborations and exchanges through art One such collaboration was ‘Recovering Lives Across Borders’ a print-making work-shop and exhibition in Dili in September 2008 that brought together people from art collectives in Yogyakarta Furthermore numerous Timorese writers have attended the Ubud Readers and Writers festival over the years and many Timorese students are currently studying art and culture in Indonesia There are also signs that the local popular culture is beginning to spread its wings Recently the local band Galaxy were invited to tour to Kupang in West Timor and to Flores in the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara which is linked culturally as well as geographically with East Timor The continuing growth of home-grown Timorese popular culture could eventually result in the flow of cultural products into Indonesia particularly to regions with long cultural ties to the island of Timor But for this to happen the industry will need more support Annie Sloman (anniesloman@hotmail.com) has been living and working on and off in East Timor since 2004 She is currently based in Yogyakarta completing a Masters of with Buddhist scholar John Makransky at the Newark Peace Education Summit in New Jersey the Dalai Lama and Jody Williams—both Nobel Peace Prize winners—debated the role of anger in social action work The Dalai Lama held that people must have inner peace in order to promote peace in the world you can’t investigate objectively,” he said “It’s anger at injustice which fires many of us,” she argued a compelling question emerged: Is anger ever a good thing Tricycle decided to ask John Makransky (“Lama John” to his friends and students; he was in fact installed as a lama in the lineage of Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche) a professor of Buddhism at Boston College who regularly leads social justice retreats that often deal with anger we need to understand what we normally identify as anger It is only when we recognize that the source of ordinary anger is delusion and self-centeredness that we can begin to use anger’s powerful energy and wisdom for the benefit of all beings a deluded emotion like anger is a movement of the mind not knowing its own nature reacting to a negative image that the mind has constructed of someone or something unaware that it is reacting to its own image We may get slightly or more intensely angry every day Anger as we normally experience it occurs when our sense of self and its world feel threatened Someone does something that makes it hard for one’s mind to maintain its concept of self and its world With that arises an image of the other person as loathsome The mind then blames the other person for its painful feeling It’s important to note that anger is a form of fear and suddenly the mind feels ungrounded and reacts with anger trying to reestablish a firm ground by reaffirming one’s narrow sense of self Anger’s aim is to establish safety in that deluded way What about the feeling that arises when we experience or witness injustice in the world But let me say a bit more that will tie back to this question Even though anger’s aim is to establish a zone of safety since anger mistakes persons for its own distorted projections of them it is out of touch with the fuller reality of everyone Buddhist traditions provide antidotes to anger to remove this danger These include ways of cultivating love and ways to look past the reified self that drives anger in order to uncover a safer “ground” in the depth of our being beyond anger’s projections Such methods help the mind find its way back to the actual ground of safety which is the unconditioned nature of our mind In many Buddhist traditions practitioners learn to experience themselves as the object of the unconditional love and compassion of the buddhas in Tibetan traditions there are practices of refuge people entrust themselves to the unconditional compassion of Amida Buddha the practitioner is totally embraced by the unchanging love and wisdom of those who have previously awakened to the nature of their minds This helps the practitioner’s mind feel safe enough to relax its grip on the concept of self to which anger fearfully clings Then the mind doesn’t feel the need to be so angry Love and compassion make us feel safe because they express the safety of their source—the deep buddhanature within us the unchanging inner space of primal awareness that cannot be harmed By receiving unconditional love and compassion from those who’ve awakened before us we sense that we too can relax into the very source of such love in the unconditioned nature of our minds How do you tell the difference between anger and wrathful compassion Wise compassion for others and the courage to confront them in their harmful thoughts and actions may look like anger from the outside but is quite different If someone becomes receptive to the deep nature of her mind with its latent capacities of goodness she starts to sense others similarly in their very being as intrinsically worthy and good Then her vision of others cannot be reduced to the caricatures of self-protective anger Her vision of persons becomes more like how a loving mother sees her child To forcefully challenge someone for their own sake takes a much stronger more authentic love than going along with others no matter what they do To relate this back to Buddhist practice: to open to our deepest nature is to access a power of loving compassion that has the courage to challenge oneself and others on whatever ways we may hide from our fuller potential Does this have anything to do with anger at injustice and unjust systems When people undergo great suffering under oppressive social systems we may feel strongly connected to those suffering most intensely—for example those who lack access to resources in countries where a tiny percentage of people control virtually everything it seems normal to hate those in charge of such a system we must acknowledge that those who maintain such systems do so from their own inner patterns of fear from their own attempts to establish safe ground for themselves The unconditional compassion in the inmost nature of our minds can recognize that everyone involved in such oppressive systems—those most oppressed by them and those ferociously defending them—have the same underlying capacity of goodness which is distorted by their self-protective attempts to find safety Authentic compassion may forcefully challenge the system Sometimes such compassion can take a powerful confrontational form because instead of aiming to protect oneself or one’s own position against others It can challenge those who cling to a bad system to give others greater freedom It can challenge those who have been abused to rediscover their great worth and power for good which hates the “bad ones” on behalf of the “good ones,” confrontational compassion protects all by challenging all differently—those suffering injustices and those inflicting them It upholds all in their fuller humanity and potential for greater freedom from fear Many activists see anger as a necessary and motivating force Is there anything positive about anger? Most who attend my social justice retreats are social justice activists and health-care givers who see a need for systemic change “My anger at injustice is what motivates me to work for change So it doesn’t make sense to me to reject my anger.” Actually They are saying that anger is not just deluded anger knows that a ground of safety must be findable somehow That’s true—there is a ground of safety here within the depth of our being Anger also knows there is something terribly wrong that must be destroyed to make things safe Anger thinks that what’s wrong is another person or group that must be defeated or destroyed to establish dependable safety What’s wrong is how out of touch we all are with our fuller humanity and underlying potential of goodness but it’s not other people; it’s the self-centered fixation that has everyone in its grip which generates individual and social reactions that make things unsafe for all So I think some social justice activists want to defend their anger because it indeed contains some wisdom If the wisdom in anger could be liberated from its distorted projections its intense energy could clarify into wrathful compassion It seems to me that that’s not what usually happens That’s if we maintain anger as our primary motivation delusions of anger hinder and eventually destroy our work Anger projects images of others that are merely partial preventing us from knowing more of their humanity and potential we drive people away instead of inspiring and attracting them to our cause; those who do work with us burn out and we eventually burn out and wind up hating ourselves So it sounds like the long and short of it is that anger is not a sustainable motivating force for social action We need to go beyond the brittle self-centeredness of anger and take the power and energy that are driving anger and direct it at its truer objects Instead of hating other persons as objects to be defeated or destroyed we can let our wrathful energy target all patterns of greed and self-protectiveness that have been operative in every one of us To do this is to be given over to the underlying energy of impartial compassion in the nature of our minds This energy can become ferocious in upholding everyone in their essential dignity and potential When Martin Luther King demonstrated against social institutions of racism and economic inequality his opponents used attack dogs and whips on him and his followers Yet King repeatedly taught that unconditional love is the key to foundational social change He taught that we must confront social structures of racism on behalf of everyone including those supporting such structures It was never only for the oppressed people This is the essential difference between ordinary anger and wrathful compassion Ordinary anger is motivated by fear and aversion; wrathful compassion is motivated by love that has the courage to confront people for their own sake Wrathful compassion seeks to protect all others Genuine love and compassion make us feel safe because they express the safety of their source—the natural kindness of our mind’s deepest nature what Tsoknyi Rinpoche calls “essence love.” In this meditation we experience emotions such as fear and anger in a field of absolute loving compassion that communicates the innate kindness in the underlying nature of our minds When we become very familiar with such practice painful emotions like fear and anger help evoke the compassionate energy in the depth of our being that returns us to our deepest wisdom Recall a moment with someone you liked very much to be near—with whom you felt happy loved—such as a moment with a favorite relative Receiving loving energy into body and mind Imagine that person present to you now in that way Feel the happiness of holding them in mind Sense them communing with you in the fundamental goodness of your being Imagine their loving energy as a shower of soft healing radiance that bathes your whole body and mind Explore just opening and accepting that loving wish and energy—receiving its gentle radiance into every part of your body permitting each area of tension to soften under its touch Receive this tender radiance into every cell every drop of blood—every part of you loved in its very being Thank you for subscribing to As a nonprofit, to keep Buddhist teachings and practices widely available Characterizing an infant’s screams as an expression of anger is stretching things Emotion still is not inherently problematic It is not an angry squirrel that is suffering as the creature does not have the human mind with which to torment itself Anger in the moment as a natural response to the environment vs anger directed at a mental construct as a result of a storyline… it seems to me that the screams of an angry infant are totally self-centered I learned the difference between wrathful compassion and anger the hard way I was a practicing MD and I had a friend who was an occupational therapist she becoming the CEO and I the medical director I had become frustrated with there poor quality of items the hospital was buying stepping out of my usual role to give purely compassionate care I kept on nicking the patient even with frequent razor changes Feeling self righteous and because I knew the CEO I stormed inter office shouting harsh criticisms about many things including the razors and after practicing buddhism for several years My friend told me she was so shocked and hurt that she lost sight of the main issue thinking that a 30 year friendship was being trashed by me I accomplished nothing due to my self righteous behavior If I had really thought out the situation when with our new corporation people could be fired to have good quality equipment and loss of either could be detrimental to patients I should have gone to the purchasing department to see if they could look for alternatives with a request and then wrathful compassion if nothing was done Asking the CEO to push purchasing or develop a team to address the issue should have been the proper route I might have solved the razor issue and not deeply hurt my friend Would you mind if I read this in a Dharma talk This is a difficult issue that I have struggled with often both in my personal and (especially!) in my political life I often find myself getting apoplectic about the more and more frequent political manifestations of greed and denial I encounter every day in the news and on the web I have discovered an addictive element in this–I am actually drawn to news articles and letters to the editor that I am quite sure will make me seethe with righteous indignation and rage One useful approach I have found when in the grip of political apoplexy is to practice Tonglen those I despise–such as the braying hate-mongers of Fox News It is a difficult practice and I don’t always succeed insights have arisen that are quite illuminating and useful–like the time I saw a bumper-sticker that infuriated me and later came to realize that the driver of this car was simply manifesting the exact same feeling I had toward him at that moment only toward those (like me) whom he regarded as “enemies.” In other words Have you ever considered that other people’s opinions rather than being “manifestations of greed It sounds like your “Tonglen practice” isn’t really doing the job if you think anyone who doesn’t practice your brand of bien pensant “progressivism” is a “braying hate-monger” who makes you “apoplectic.” All of us are struggling to balance confrontation and compassion Have you ever considered that other people’s opinions can be “manifestations of greed And that egregious opinions and policies can be excused and even hailed through the relativistic claptrap that all opinions are equally valid How does one know whether other people’s opinions are “manifestations of greed hatred and denial” or are the result of their having a different belief than you of the proper roles and functions of government You may be surprised to hear that I was a lifelong bleeding heart liberal and progressive Democrat who left the left precisely because I felt the left had gotten too hateful and intolerant I’m a libertarian and voluntaryist now that’s the highest spiritual path – to not force my beliefs upon others (even in the name of “helping” them) To support voluntary structures in society from the bottom up rather than top-down authoritarianism from the central state I think many liberals are filled with hate towards conservatives because they can’t get conservatives to do what they want you’ve decided that a large government is good you need everyone on board with your vision you get angry and make them out to be your enemy think about how you might feel if a friend of yours was constantly pushing you to join their MLM network marketing group No-one wants to be forced or pushed to do something they disagree with But this is the standard tactic of the left these days which is why the left is frustrated and angry This is one reason why I do not support government-mandated socialism but I support voluntary socialism in the form of co-ops and worker-owned companies in a free market society if you think people who are conservative are hateful it’s probably because you don’t have any conservative friends I think most liberals simply don’t understand conservative thinking and therefore label it as “greed” and “hate,” when in reality it’s much more about pragmatism Try to understand the other point of view first and look at things from their perspective and you might actually learn something and open your heart at the same time would be dedicated to preserving what is the truly sustainable basis of our lives What I see projected as “conservatism” in the media is almost always expressed in terms of fear: fear of other races fear of government (who are threatening to take our guns away) fear of the deficit…fundamentally fear of the future Serving up the ‘fear of the day’ to people who are already insecure in their present circumstances may be politically astute but in the long run leads to more social breakdown and less resolution Libertarians to me are indistinguishable from conservatives give or take a couple of fears (maybe a slightly more paranoid view of government and a well armed bunker mentality) too many on the left employ the same qualities of knee jerk responses to complex problems Less based on fear of the ‘other’ perhaps and more based on distrust of authority The main advantage of “bleeding heart liberals” is that they exhibit a better sense of humor and throw much more interesting parties (Has there ever been a really funny conservative comedian there’s Stephan Colbert…heh heh ;-} ) “The bad news is you’re falling through the air The good news is there’s no ground.” — Trungpa Rinpoche “Love and compassion make us feel safe because they express the safety of their source—the deep buddhanature within us we can only imagine the groundlessness of buddha nature to seek safety is to hide in a cocoon of ignorance to push up against what threatens me is what I seek to do True compassion acts in the most skilful way which might not appear on the surface to be kind or even loving I recommend this article by Chogyam Trungpa, a true Vajra Warrior.
